E. S. BROWN
Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, Pa.

Brown's Service Station:  He was born in Springfield township, May 19, 1890.  A 
son of Jacob Brown, who was with the Pennsylvania Glass Sand Company of 
Mapleton Depot for years; he is now retired.  E. S. Brown began his schooling 
in Springfield township; he later on attended the Pittsburgh High Schol.  He is 
a blacksmith by trade; he was with the U.S. Refractories Company for three 
years as a repairman on machinery.  In 1929 he erected a neat service station 
in Aleenton, a suburb of Mount Union; here are erected four service gas pumps, 
also oils and greases; a general service is maintained for the public.  He is a 
World War man; enlisted at Huntingdon, Pa.; was sent to Camp Wadsworth, 
Spartansburg, S.C.; assigned to 56th Pioneer Infantry; was there for three 
weeks, thence to New York; embarked on U.S. transport (Mauie), landed at St. 
Naisare; there for one week to Choppy, France; on front, in action, there for 
duration of war; gassed at Mont-De-Con; armistice signed., left France, 
November 12th, 1919, for Belgium; walked all night to Althus, Belgium; was then 
in Army of Occupation; left for Germany in Army of Occupation; stayed there 
till next summer in Bitburg, Germany; came back to France; to St. Naisaire; 
left for U.S.; arrived at Newport News; was sixteen days returning; discharged 
at Camp Dix, New Jersey.  He is a member of the I.O.O.F.  A Republican.  He has 
one sister, Ira, married to Daniel Berkstresser, a fireman on Pittsburgh 
Division, out of Altoona, Pa.  E. S. Brown was married to Rachel Whitzel, a 
daughter of Adam and Rebecca Whitzel, of Mount Union, Pa.  Hunting is his 
sport.
