DR. ROBERT EWING BELL, D.C.
Mount Union, Pa.

Chiropractor:  A son of George Thomas Bell, who was born in Barree township, 
November 23, 1854, and died in West township, March 23, 1928, and was the only 
child of William and Anna Mary (Hutchinson) Bell, the former of whom was born 
March 29, 1832, and died June 19, 1907.  The only son of Thomas and Margaret 
(Ewing) Bell, and grandson of John Bell, who was one of the early settlers of 
Barree township, where he died in 1833, a very aged man.  The latter, Anna Mary 
(Hutchinson) Bell, was born May 29, 1831, and died February 18, 1918.  She was 
the daughter of George and Eliza (Hagan) Hutchinson, the former of whom was 
born June 19, 1800, and died July 15, 1878.  The latter was born April 2, 1809, 
and died July 1, 1882, and a granddaughter of John Hutchinson, who served with 
distinction under General Washington in the Revolutionary War, and was married 
October 2, 1789, to Mary Henry (born August 2, 1771, died February 3, 1853), 
daughter of John Henry, an Irishman, who was an early settler in Barree 
township.  John Hutchinson died February 11, 1827.  George Thomas Bell was 
married October 7, 1884, to Martha Elizabeth Archey, born January 20, 1862, at 
Pine Grove, Pa., and died November 10, 1928; was the daughter of John (born 
August 15, 1792, died September 3, 1873) and Elizabeth (Emerick) Archey (born 
April 8, 1828, died October 4, 1871).  John Archey was a Scotch-Irishman, who 
came to this country and  settled in Centre County, near Pine Grove MIlls, 
where he was married to Elizabeth Emerick, April 23, 1850; ceremony was 
performed by Rev. Linn.  Elizabeth Emerick was a daughter of Jacob and Mary 
Catharine (Clay) Emerick, and great-granddaughter of Chistopher Emerick, who 
came to this country from Germany in 1774.  Robert Ewing Bell, the subject of 
this sketch, was born at Petersburg, Pa., September 9, 1895.  He is one of 
twins, his brother, Marion A. Bell, of Petersburg, being the other brother.  
Dr. Bell began his school career at the Myton School in West township, 
completed 8th grade in spring of 1913.  Attended Juniata College Teachers'; 
course, 1914, Huntingdon, Pa.  Taught school in West township (Green School), 
1913-14, 1914-15, Petersburg Borough, 1915-16.  Attended Universal Chiropractic 
College, Pittsburgh, Pa., 1920-21-22, graduating with degree of D.C., November 
28, 1922.  Other lines of activity which he has been engaged at were mercantile 
clerk, 1916-17, at Petersburg, Pa.; Penna. R.R., Altoona, 1919; Insurance, 
1920, Huntingdon, Pa.  His military service record is as follows:  Accepted for 
enlistment in the United States Marines at Marine Recruiting office, at York, 
Pa., June 12, 1917; sworn into service at League Island Navy Yard, 
Philadelphia, Pa., June 18, 1917.  After three months' training, assigned to 
2nd Company, 1st Regiment, Fixed Defense Force, Marine Barracks, League Island 
Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pa.  About October 1, 1918, transferred to "C" 
Company, Machine Gun Battalion, Fifth Brigade, U.S. Marines, at Quantico, 
Virginia; about the 25th of October, 1918,  sailed from Hoboken for Brest, 
France, abourd the Marine Transport U.S.S. "Henderson."  Landed at Brest, 
November 7, just four days before the armistice was signed.  Stationed at Camp 
Pontenason until August, 1919; set sail for the U.S.A. about the 5th of August 
aboard the U.S.S. "Siboney," arriving at Naval Base, Hampton Roads, Virginia, 
the 12th.  Honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal at Hampton Roads, 
Virginia, August 13, 1919.  On June 18, 1923, Dr. Bell located himself at Mount 
Union, Pa., began the practice of Chiropractic, and has succeeded in 
establishing a large and fast increasing practice.  He belongs to the I.O.O.F., 
No. 1162, Petersburg, Pa.,  the American Chiropractic Association, Simpson-Hunt 
Post, No. 107, American Legion, Mt. Union, Pa. (Post Commander 1927), Juniata 
Valley Colony Club, Mount Union, Pa., and Men's Club, Mount Union, Pa.  In 
politics he adheres to the principles of the Democratic party.  Dr. Bell has 
two brothers, Wm. Emerick Bell, Glenside, Pa.; Marion A. Bell, his twin 
brother, Petersburg, Pa.  Sisters are Anna B., married to Ralph Gregory, 
Petersburg, Pa.; Esther J., married to J. Harry Stewart, Petersburg, Pa.; Nina 
D. , Pittsburgh, Pa.; Viola E., married to Armour C. Eberle, Petersburg, Pa.; 
M. Ruth, a student of dental hygiene at the University of Pennsylvania, 
Philadelphia, Pa.  Dr. Robert Ewing Bell was married October 2, 1920, at 
Greensburg, Pa., to Enid Vyrle Lightner, only daughter of Mordecai J. and 
Sophia Belle Lightner, of Petersburg, Pa.  One child, Joyce Le Jeune, was born 
July 5, 1928.  The Doctor enjoys hunting and fishing.  His home and office are 
at 21 S. Jefferson street, Mount Union, Pa.
