The Carnesville Herald November 1, 1928
Washington, Oct. 23--Professor W.E.B. DuBois, leading negro citizen and Republican
politician of New York, editor of The Crisis, official organ of the Association
for the Advancement of Colored People, criticizes Governor Alfred E. Smith in the
October number of The Nation for not recognizing negroes in the matter of
appointments to public office.

Among other things Professor DuBois says:

"In all Governor Smith's long career he has sedulously avoided recognizing negroes
in any way. He has twice vetoed bills which would have given a negro magistrate
to Harlem. He has never given a negro any major appointment. He has seldom been
willing to receive a negro delegation and it is doubtful if he has met personally
in all his career a half dozen of the 250,000 negroes of his state.

Liberals may, if they will, vote for Al Smith. But vote for Al is a vote for the
Bourbon South." is his concluding statement.
