OBITUARIES:

James Ronnie Norred

   (ROANOKE) Services for James Ronnie Norred, 61, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Leon Newton and the Rev. Shannon Mapp officiating. Burial will follow in 
Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Norred died Monday, Sept. 3, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Lura Young Norred of Roanoke; two daughters, 
Kimberly Adamson and Patty Daniel of Roanoke; three sons, Jamie, Chuckie and 
Derick Norred of Roanoke; one sister, Bovine Fisher of Roanoke; two brothers, 
Buck and Larry Joe Norred of Roanoke; and 12 grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Fred Norred, Bobby Norred, Mike Brewer, Tommy Burke, 
Russell Norred and David Glass.
   Mr. Norred was born March 19, 1946, son of Dalph and Flossie Truitt Norred. 
He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and had worked as a truck driver 
for T. Burke Logging. Mr. Norred served in the United States Army during the 
Korean War. Mr. Norred was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, 
Jimmy, Leonard, Billy Ray and Virgil Norred; and two sisters, Opal Yarbrough 
and Earline Arnett.

Thomas Wilburn Paschal

   (ROANOKE) Services for Thomas Wilburn Paschal, 81, of Roanoke will be 
Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Phil Russell officiating. Burial will follow in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
   Mr. Paschal died Tuesday, Sept. 4, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Sara Crutchfield Paschal of Roanoke; three 
daughters, Marsha Evans of Huntsville, Teresa Evans of Pendleton, S.C., and 
Tammy Stewart of Spanish Fort; one sister, Linda Lashley Ray of Valley; one 
brother, Bernard Paschal of Valley; five grandchildren; and one great-
grandchild.
   Mr. Paschal was born March 17, 1926, son of John Tom and Lois Hardy Paschal. 
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke and a retired insurance 
agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Mr. Paschal served in the United 
States Air Force during World War II. Mr. Paschal was preceded in death by his 
parents and one brother, Calvin Paschal.
   Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to First Baptist Church of 
Roanoke.

Mary E. Moon Nixon

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mary E. Moon Nixon, 90, of Roanoke, formerly of West 
Point, Ga., were Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Burroughs officiating. Burial followed at Resthaven 
Cemetery in Lanett.
   Mrs. Nixon died Saturday, Sept. 1, at her home.
   Survivors include a daughter, JoAnn Carroll of Gainesville, Ga.; a son, Fred 
Nixon of Roanoke; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Grandsons and great-grandsons served as pallbearers: Christopher Nixon, 
Phillip Nixon, Scott Nixon, Kenneth Carroll, Joe Carroll, Ryan Carroll, Matthew 
Carol and Jacob Nixon. Honorary pallbearers were John D. Taylor, Bill Gilmore, 
Roger Nixon and Hunter Searcy.
   A Chambers County native, Mrs. Nixon was born Nov. 28, 1916, daughter of 
James Dock and Ina Chewning Moon. She was a member of Langdale Congregational 
Christian Church and had retired from West Point Feed Store.
   Memorials may be floral of the family suggests contributions to Langdale 
Congregational Christian Church (P.O. Box 155, Valley, AL 36854) or the charity 
of choice.

Anna Carlon Brown

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Anna Carlon Brown, 84, of Roanoke were 
Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at 11 a.m. CDT at Lakeview Memory Gardens, with the 
Rev. Carl Partain officiating.
   Mrs. Brown died Wednesday, Aug. 29, at LaFayette Extended Care.
   Survivors include five daughters, Connie Jean Aisel and Joyce Littlefield of 
Ocala, Fla., Jill Conrad of Cape Coral, Fla., and Jennifer Lynn Huot and 
Jeanette Barber of Roanoke; two sons, Jack Brown of Lanett and Jerry Brown of 
Salem; one sister, Florence Smith of Ocala; two brothers, June Willoughby of 
Madison, Fla., and Bill Willoughby of Flagler, Colo.; 27 grandchildren and 21 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Clay Tooker, Bobby Royster, Jerome Barber, Wayne Dukes, 
Pierre Huot and James Conrad Jr.
   Mrs. Brown was born Dec. 21, 1922, daughter of Everett and Stella Stephens 
Willoughby. She was of the Baptist faith and had been a homemaker. Mrs. Brown 
was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Earl Brown; her parents; one son, 
James E. Brown; and two sisters.

Clinton Wesley Pearson Sr.

   (ROANOKE) Clinton Wesley Pearson Sr., 74, of 3019 Country Club Rd., Roanoke, 
died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007, at his home.
   Services were Saturday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with the Revs. Calvin Trammell, William Phillips, R.L. Heflin and 
Sanders Higgins officiating.
   Burial was at Providence Cemetery, Milltown.
   Survivors include two sons, Clinton W. Pearson Jr. of Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., 
and Clifford Joel Pearson of Palm Bay, Fla.; two daughters, Patricia Pearson of 
Mahwah, N.J., and Judy White of Phenix City; two stepdaughters, Betty Goins of 
Melvin, Fla., and Sandranette King of Augusta, Ga.; seven sisters, Doris 
Trammell, Julia Cofield and Annie Trammell of Roanoke, Mary Brown and Rudene 
McCants of Valley, Helen Johnson of Atlanta and Lula Mae Hughley of Five 
Points; 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in 
death by his wife, Dorothy Pearson; his parents, Thomas and Izora Spence 
Pearson; three brothers, Thomas J. Pearson, Henry A. Pearson and Leonard M. 
Pearson; and three sisters, Alberta Phillips, Catherine Ray Ross and Audrey 
Lewis.

Jane Smith Key

   (LAFAYETTE) Services for Jane Smith Key, 65, of LaFayette, formerly of 
Wadley, were Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Malone Baptist Church, with 
the Revs. Zenus Windsor and Russell Williams officiating. Burial followed in 
the Knight Family Cemetery.
   Mrs. Key died Saturday, Sept. 1, at Bethany House.
   Mrs. Key is survived by a daughter, Rhonda Slay of LaFayette; and two 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jimmy Strickland, Bill Key, Vernon Lashley, Everett Howe, 
Stanley McConnell and Narine McConnell.
   Mrs. Key was born Aug. 4, 1942, daughter of Tom David and Frankie McConnell 
Smith. She was the bookkeeper for Roanoke Health Care Center and a member of 
Malone Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her 
husband, James Thomas Key.

Mary Grace Henderson Dunn

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mary Grace Henderson Dunn, 86, of LaGrange, Ga., died 
Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at West Georgia Medical Center.
   Mrs. Dunn was born Dec. 17, 1920, in the Bethel community of Randolph 
County, daughter of the late Roy Lee and Lola Smith Henderson. She had lived in 
LaGrange most of her life and was retired from Callaway Mills.
   Survivors include her husband, Van. E. Dunn of LaGrange; four sons, Roy L. 
East and Billy East of LaGrange, Arlis A.G. East and Bobby East of Hickory 
Flat; a sister, Dana Henderson of Roanoke; a brother, Richard Pete Henderson 
of LaGrange; 19 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; three great-great-
grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the Chapel of Striffler-
Hamby Mortuary, with the Rev. Charles Greathouse officiating. Burial will 
follow in Meadoway Gardens Cemetery.

Lois Martin Lewis

   (LANETT) Lois Martin Lewis, 84, of Lanett died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at 
George H. Lanier Nursing Home, Valley.
   Services were Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. at Huguley United Methodist Church 
with the Revs. Dennis Shaw, Bill Parker and Wesley Dykes officiating. Burial 
followed at Forrester's Chapel Cemetery in Randolph County.
   Mrs. Lewis is survived by her husband, William Billy Lewis; her son, 
William Terry Lewis of Lanett; one sister, Ruth Todd of Decatur, Ala.; and one 
brother, James Edward Martin of Lanett.
   Born May 27, 1923, in Tallassee, Mrs. Lewis was the daughter of the late 
James and Ada Martin. She had been employed by West Point Manufacturing Co., 
the Army Depot in Anniston during World War II and Zody's Department Store in 
California. Mrs. Lewis was a member of Huguley United Methodist Church. She was 
preceded in death by her daughter, Teresa Ann Lewis, and three sisters, Mary 
Gibson, Edna Cannon and Eula Mae Daughtrey.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in her memory 
to Huguley United Methodist Church.

   (ROANOKE) Jimmy Roger Cadillac Clark, 56, of Roanoke, died Sunday, Sept. 
2, 2007, at Roanoke Health Care Center.

Church, with Pastor Curtis Spidell officiating. Burial will be in the church 
cemetery.
   Survivors include his mother, Lillie Pearl Clark of Atlanta; two sons, Corey 
Trammell of Wedowee and Anthony Trammell of Anniston; three daughters, Wyvette 
Trammell Henderson of Birmingham and Lynn Linson and LaQuale Trammell of 
Roanoke.

   (WEDOWEE) Marie W. Bailey, 32, of Wedowee, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007, at 
Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with Pastor Calvin Trammell officiating. Burial will be in the church 
cemetery.
   Survivors include her husband, Bobby McCray of Wedowee; her parents, Willie 
Frank and Reacie Bailey of Wedowee; a son, Bobby McCray II of Wedowee; two 
sisters, Lisa Bailey of Anniston and Regina Gutierrez of Austin, Texas; and a 
brother, Tracy Bailey of Montgomery. She was preceded in death by a brother, 
Oliver Bailey.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.

Roy Hilton Patterson

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Services for Roy Hilton Patterson, 90, of LaGrange, Ga., 
were Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Stanley Yarbrough and the Rev. John Dorkweiler officiating. Burial 
followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Patterson died Sunday, Sept. 2, at Twin Fountains Home, LaGrange.
   Survivors include his wife, Ruby Patterson of Roanoke; one daughter, Linda 
Buttrum of LaGrange; one son, Leonard Patterson of Barnesville, Ga.; six 
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
   A resident of Randolph County most of his life, Mr. Patterson was a Chambers 
County native, born Nov. 25, 1916, son of Howard Leon and Mary Eula McLean 
Patterson.  He was a member of Bethany Lime Christian Church and had retired 
from West Point Pepperell. Mr. Patterson was a member of the Roanoke Masonic 
Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Elgin 
Patterson.
   Pallbearers were Greg Benefield, Chuck Thompson, Grover Kelly, James B. 
Buttrum, Theo Buttrum and Danny Smith.

Jeanette Smith

   (HEFLIN) Jeanette Smith, 68, of Heflin died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007.
   Mrs. Smith was born May 24, 1939, in Heflin. She was a homemaker and member 
of Green's Chapel Methodist Church.
   She is survived by her husband, Shelley Smith Jr. of Heflin; daughter, Donna 
Bishop of Wedowee; sons, Chris Smith of Heflin and Joseph Smith of Calhoun 
County; sisters, Mozell Vaughn of Weaver, Y.Z. Crow and Ermalene Norton, both 
of Heflin, and Jean Miller and Joann Snow, both of Oxford; brother, Jimmy Crow 
of Atlanta; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. at Dryden Funeral Home 
in Heflin with the Rev. John Childs officiating. Nephews and friends will serve 
as pallbearers.

Zettie McDaniel Noles

   (GRAHAM) Zettie Noles, 92, of Graham died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at her 
residence.
   She was born in Cleburne County Oct. 14, 1914, the daughter of the late 
Shelly and Rada Parker McDaniel. Mrs. Noles was a member of Bethlehem 
Campground Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, 
William Noles; daughter, Betty Walker; grandson, Jeff Noles; five brothers, 
Hiram McDaniel, J.L. McDaniel, Basil McDaniel, Harden McDaniel and Marvin 
McDaniel; and two sisters, Stella Johnson and Irene Clayton.
   Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Noles, of Graham and Clarence Noles of 
Ranburne; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
   Services will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. EDT at Bethlehem Campground 
Methodist Church with the Revs. Jerry Wiggins, Ed Grooms and Harlin Noles 
officiating. Music will be furnished by Harold McWhorter. Interment services 
will follow in the church cemetery.
   Pallbearers will be Clarence Noles Jr., Jonathan Noles, Terry Thompson, 
Danny Mitchell, Allen Skinner and Randy Noles.
   Mrs. Noles will be at the funeral home until being placed in state at the 
church at 1:30 to 2 p.m.

   (WADLEY) Lillie B. McLain, 83, of Wadley died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at Clay 
County Nursing Home, Lineville.

Wadley, with burial in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include two daughters, Jean Battle and Linda Laney of Wadley; 
three sons, Michael McLain, Rodney McLain and Dwayne McLain of Wadley; four 
brothers, Walker Hunter of Dayton, Ohio, Bobby Battle of Cincinnati, Ohio, and 
Donald Battle and James F. Battle of Wadley; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-
grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her 
husband, James McLain; and two brothers, Leroy Battle and Garon Hunter.
   Public viewing will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on

   (ATLANTA) Frances Marie Heard Smith, 66, of Atlanta died Sunday, Sept. 9, 
2007, at South Fulton Medical Center, East Point, Ga.
   Services will be Saturday, Sept. 15, at noon at First Baptist Church, Riley 
Street, Roanoke, with the Rev. Gilbert E. Staples officiating. Burial will be 
in East Roanoke Cemetery.
   Survivors include her husband, Thomas Darrel Smith of Atlanta; a son Hnric 
Abram Goodman of Atlanta; a daughter, Ann-Marie Smith of Atlanta; a brother, 
Douglas M. Heard of Newnan, Ga.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in 
death by two brothers, Joseph Heard Jr. and Frank B. Heard.
   Public viewing will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on 
Friday. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.
   There will be a memorial service held at Murray Brothers Funeral Chapel,

Albert Lee Bassett

   (ROANOKE) Albert Lee Bassett, 60, of Roanoke died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, 
at his home.
   Services will be Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Riley 
Street, Roanoke, with Pastor Gilbert Staples, Bishop L.J. Wright, Elder John 
Greathouse and Elder Veresia Houston officiating.
   Survivors include a son, LeMar Ross of New York City; two brothers, Isiah 
Threatt of Piedmont and James Parker Jr. of Roanoke; and two sisters, Angelia 
Phillips of Roanoke and Isazoriah Threatt of Piedmont. He was preceded in death 
by his mother, Bertha L. Threatt; his father, James Parker Sr.; and his 
stepfather, John Threatt.
   Public viewing will be at the funeral home until 6 p.m. Monday. The body

Josephine C. Johnson Fletcher

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Josephine C. Johnson Fletcher, 82, of Bowdon, Ga., died 
Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, in Pine Knoll Nursing and Rehab.
   Mrs. Fletcher was born in Carroll County, Ga., Aug. 16, 1925, the daughter 
of the late Joseph C. Johnson and Alice V. Ayers Johnson Jackson. She was a 
member of Midway Community Church and was retired from LaMar Manufacturing Co.
   Survivors include seven daughters, Sandra Fletcher, Susan Crook, Rita Adams, 
Terri Sticher and Stacy Jo Fletcher, all of Carrollton, Ga., Sharon Slaton of 
Bowdon, Ga., and Karon Rooks of Mt. Zion; 13 grandchildren; four great-
grandchildren; five sisters, Beatrice Brown and Louise Bradley of Bowdon, 
Martha Isaacs of San Diego, Calif., Rachel Johnson of Franklin, Ga., and Jane 
Toney of Newell; five brothers, James Jackson of Bowdon, Tommy Jackson of 
Ranburne, Jesse Jackson and Howard Jackson of Carrollton and John Jackson of 
Waco, Ga. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved 
husband, Herman Fletcher, in September 1979.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m. at Midway Community Church 
with minister Mike Brooks and the Rev. Couch Whitley officiating. Music was by 
Tabbie Huff and Linda Haag. Pallbearers were Brent Slaton, Brad Slaton, Casey 
Rooks, Gabe Adams, Trey Fletcher, Jesse Sticher and Dave Langley. Interment

Chapel Hill Funeral Home. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery.
   Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the funeral home.
   Mrs. Crawford died Thursday, Sept. 5, in Orlando.
   Survivors include her children, Vernie Perry of Wedowee, Jack Laney of 
Birmingham, David Laney of Anniston and Diane DeLaNuez of Orlando; sister, 
Louise Hicks of Piedmont; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 
several great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Ralph 
O. Crawford.
   Pallbearers will be Phillip Laney, Bryan Laney, Patrick Laney, James Hicks, 
James Laney and Cornelius Baggett. Mrs. Crawford was a native of Cullman and 
resident of Anniston for 65 years.

   (MILLTOWN) James Cole, 76, of Milltown died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at his 
home.
   Services will be at Milltown Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, 
with interment in Milltown Cemetery. The Revs. Johnny Langley, Rick Cummings 
and John Cole will officiate.
   Pallbearers will be Terry Baker, Jeff Baker, Josh Baker, Steven Scott, Shane 
Scott, Darryl Aikens and Bryan Prather.
   Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Swader Cole of Milltown; a sister, Beatrice 
Cole Duffey of LaFayette; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Cole was a Chambers County native, born April 2, 1931. He was retired 
from West Point Pepperell after 32 years. He was a member of Milltown Baptist 
Church.

   (MARIETTA, Ga.) Georgia Lee Patterson, 88, of Marietta, Ga., formerly of 
Bowdon, Ga., died Sept. 5, 2007.
   She was born in Randolph County, Ala., Sept. 7, 1918, the daughter of the 
late Charlie and Mary Noles Cole. She was a member of The Church of God of 
Prophecy and was retired from Bremen-Bowdon Investment Co.
   Survivors include two grandchildren, Vickie Wille of Freeport, Texas, and 
Julie Fleming of Whitesburg, Ga.; five great-grandchildren; three great-great-
grandchildren; one brother, Charles Cole of Anniston; nieces and nephews. In 
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Roy Lee Patterson, 
and a sister, Adell Loftin.
   Services will be Friday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. EDT at Rainwater Funeral Home 
Chapel in Bowdon with the Revs. Douglas Maxwell and Authur Reece officiating. 
Interment will follow at Bethlehem Campground Methodist Church Cemetery, Graham.

Pauline Robinson Langley

   (ROOPVILLE, Ga.) Pauline Robinson Langley, 80, of Roopville, Ga., died 
Friday, Aug. 31, 2007.
   Mrs. Langley was born Sept. 9, 1926, in Randolph County, Ala., to the late 
Robert Bob Robinson and Mary Hester Robinson. She was a member of Ephesus 
Church of Christ.
   She is survived by her children, Wendell Langley, Wilma Brandenburg, Jimmy

John William Knight

   (WEDOWEE) John William Knight, 57, of 7260 County Road 15, Wedowee, died 
Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007 at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Services will be Thursday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. at Weathers Heights Church of 
Christ, Wedowee, with Brother Henry Nelson officiating.
   Burial will be in Stephen Mission Church Cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Knight of Wedowee; a daughter, Terill 
Drake of Wedowee; six stepsons, John A. Hopson of England, Theodore Hopson and 
Robert Hopson of Wedowee, Michael Hopson of Virginia Beach, Va., Richard E. 
Hopson of Korea and Hershel Walker of Newell; a brother, Troy Knight of 
Wedowee; a sister, Cora Scott of Killean, Texas; and a special friend, Sharon 
Wilson of Ashland. He was preceded in death by his father, John R. Knight; his 
mother, Fronie Robertson; and three sisters, Charlander Knight, Jeanetta Bosh 
and Annie Woodgett.
   Public viewing will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on 
Wednesday.

William Louis Harmon

   (ROANOKE) Services for William Louis Harmon, 87, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
Sept. 16, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Don 
Quick and the Rev. Sandy Crosslin officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
   Mr. Harmon died Friday, Sept. 14, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Helon Lyles Harmon of Roanoke; two sons, David 
L. and Daryl L. Harmon of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Waymon Hodges, Jerrell Hodges, Steve Welsh, Phillip Welsh, 
Tommy Windsor and Tom Brooks. Honorary pallbearers were D.W. Shelnutt, Jackie 
Warren, Sammy Mason, Manley Clack, Sam Wylie, Johnny Stephens, Robbie Hodges, 
Rickie Hodges, Jerry Stephens, Charlie Boyd, Wylie and Ron Barngrover.
   Mr. Harmon was born Oct. 14, 1919, son of Jasper Wilson and Elizabeth Hendon 
Harmon. He was an active member for 40 years of Radney's Chapel Methodist 
Church and served in the United States military during World War II. Mr. Harmon 
was a farmer, carpenter and devoted father. His sons were his caregivers. Mr. 
Harmon was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Audrey Smith, Edna 
Sullongerber, Corrie Griffin and Dosia Harmon; and one brother, Larkin Harmon.

Countryside Hospice of Roanoke.

Robert Mig' Whitley

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Robert Mig Whitley, 90, of LaGrange, Ga., died Friday, 
Sept. 14, 2007, at Hospice LaGrange.
   He was born April 29, 1917, in Randolph County, Ala., the son of the late 
Thomas Matthew and Etta Jane Brown Whitley. He grew up in LaGrange and later 
moved to Albuquerque, N.M. In 1980 he retired as a furniture salesman and moved 
to Thomaston, then to Tracy, Calif., and finally returned to LaGrange. Each 
place he lived, he was active in his church. He was a deacon at First Baptist 
Albuquerque for more than 20 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church 
on the Square and helped in the Community Soup Kitchen. He was a down-to-earth 
humble man who wanted to be a servant.
   Survivors include his wife, Hazel Partain Whitley; a son, Wesley Whitley of 
Greenleaf, Idaho; sisters, Lola Williams, Obie Geter and Esther Cline, all of 
LaGrange; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and 
nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Whitley Jr.; and brothers, 
Oliver Whitley, Walter Whitley and Chester Whitley; and a sister, May Duke.
   A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, EDT at the Ida 
Cason Callaway Chapel of the First Baptist Church on the Square with Dr. Paul 
R. Baxter officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 5 
until 7, Monday evening. The family requests that flowers not be sent, but 
cards are welcome. Those desiring may make a donation in memory of Mr. Whitley

Maxine Bailey

   (ANNISTON) Services for Maxine Bailey, 71, of Anniston, were Friday, 
Sept.14, 2007, at 3 p.m. at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel with Dr. Roland Brown 
officiating with interment following at Forestlawn Gardens.
   Mrs. Bailey died Sept. 12 at University Hospital in Birmingham.
   She was born in Boaz and had lived in Anniston for the past 11 years. Mrs. 
Bailey was a medical secretary at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital. She attended 
Golden Springs Baptist Church.
   She is survived by her husband, Buck Bailey of Anniston; sons Rick Stewart 
of Marietta, Ga., Steve Stewart of Wedowee and Wade Stewart of Anniston; 
sisters, Ruby Lee of Birmingham and Ilinner Bristol of Auburndale, Fla.; 
brothers, Arnold Smith of Boaz and Buddy Smith of Gadsden; three 
granddaughters; a great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. 
Bailey is preceded in death by her brothers, E.L. Smith and David Smith.

   (FAIRHOPE) Services for Arzelia Brown Messer, 86, of Fairhope, formerly of 
Wedowee, were Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007, at 2 p.m. at First Methodist Church of 
Wedowee, with the Rev. Gary Henderson and the Rev. Robert Mount officiating. 
Burial followed in Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mr.[Mrs.] Messer died Friday, Sept. 14, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope.
   Mrs. Messer is survived by four daughters, Hilda Camp of Fairhope, Brenda 
Beasley of Wedowee, Jackie Cottle of Roanoke and Rhonda Rogers of Fairhope; one 
sister, Blondell Phillips of LaFayette; one brother, Elton Brown of Gadsden; 10 
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her 
husband, W. Jack Messer; and her parents, Woodson and Annie Freeman.
   Pallbearers were her grandsons, Dr. Ben Camp, Bill Morrison, Cody Cottle, 
Corey Cottle, Landon Rogers and Logan Rogers.
   Mrs. Messer was born Sept. 12, 1921, daughter of Woodson and Annie Freeman 
Brown. She was a faithful member of First Methodist Church of Wedowee and the 
United Methodist Women. She served as church financial secretary for many years 
and was a former member of the Wedowee Garden Club. Mrs. Messer had worked 
alongside her husband at Messer Electric for over 40 years. Her smile 
brightened the lives of all those she touched.

   (WEST POINT, Ga.) Gleemer Irene Borden, 65, of West Point, Ga., died 
Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, at her home.
   Mrs. Borden was born May 27, 1942, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the 
late Gloomer McCormick and Rosa Ella Aldridge. She had been a LaGrange area 
resident all her life and was a member of New Beginning Apostolic Church. Mrs. 
Borden was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Ruth McCormick, and a brother, 
Curtis Lee McCormick.
   Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Monroe Borden of West Point, Ga.; 
children, Roy Borden, Marvin Dewayne Borden, Roger Dale Borden, Dempsey Borden 
and Teresa Toney of LaGrange, Pamela Veal of Roanoke, Richard Borden of 
Huguley, Faye Scott of Cusseta and Victoria Fountain of Greenville, Ga.; 33

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Charles Edwin Willis, 80, of Carrollton, Ga., died Monday, 
Sept. 10, 2007.
   Mr. Willis was born July 10, 1927, in Carroll County, Ga., to the late 
Hepsie Wallis Willis and John Willis. He was a retired welder having worked for 
The Southwire Company and was a member of Word of Life Gospel Ministry.
   Survivors include his children, Janice Mitchell, Judy Willis and John Windle 
Willis, all of Carrollton; a sister, Marie Mathews of Carrollton; a brother, 
Wallis B. Willis of Newell; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a 
number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 
his son, Charles Randal Willis.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at Martin & Hightower 
Heritage Chapel in Carrollton with the Rev. Keith Jiles officiating. In

James Rommie Edwards Sr.

  (BOWDON, Ga.) James Rommie Edwards Sr., 84, of Bowdon, Ga., died Tuesday, 
Sept. 18, 2007, in Tanner Medical Center-Carrollton.
   He was born in Anson County, N.C., on Sept. 24, 1922, the son of the late 
Lee Roy and Vada Thomas Edwards. Mr. Edwards was a businessman who owned and 
operated Quality Sportswear Inc. for many years. He was an Army veteran of 
World War II and was an active member of Bowdon Baptist Church. In addition to 
his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Steed Edwards; and 
three brothers, Roy, Graham and Melvin Edwards.
   Survivors include a son, James R. Edwards Jr. of Hickory, N.C.; daughter, 
Jackie Edwards of Granite Falls, N.C.; three grandsons; three great-
grandchildren; brother, Robert Edwards of Marshville, N.C.; two sisters, Gladys 
Ferree of Marshville and Leigh Anne Helms of Charlotte, N.C.; a very special 
friend, Betty Smith, of Bowdon; and a number of nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. at Bowdon Baptist 
Church with the Rev. Mark Standridge and Dr. Ron Huggins officiating.

   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Carson was born March 2, 1928, daughter of

social worker and was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church, Phenix City. She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Buford Carson; one sister and three

   Mrs. Noles died Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Northeast Alabama Medical Center,

daughters, Patricia Chambers of Bowdon, Ga., Peggy Mote of Woodland, Belinda 
Wood of Wedowee and Pam Noles of Anniston; six grandchildren; and 11 great-
grandchildren.

   Mrs. Noles was born Sept. 15, 1930, daughter of Lowell and Stella McDaniel
