OBITUARIES:

J. C. Wilder

   (WEDOWEE) J. C. Wilder, age 72, of Rt. 3, Wedowee, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 
1993, in Veterans Hospital, Tuskegee, after a short illness.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, in Benefield Funeral Home 
Chapel, with Rev. Bobby Jones and Rev. E. G. Clark officiating. Burial was in 
the Liberty Grove Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Wilder was a native of Randolph County, the son of the late J. O. and 
Electa Wilson Wilder. He was a veteran of World War Two and a member of the 
VFW.
   Mr. Wilder is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cora Wilder of Wedowee; one 
daughter, Mrs. Brenda Carlee of Dayton, Ohio; one grandson, William Larry 
Brown; and three sisters, Mrs. Marcelle Fincher and Mrs. Lessie Cosper of 
LaGrange, Ga., and Mrs. Letha Haynes of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Jeffery Brown, Woodie Wilder, Eddie Cosper and Danny 
Carlee.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

K. C. Mitchell

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for K. C. Mitchell, 61, of Rt. 4, Roanoke, were 
Saturday, Feb. 27, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. 
Tim Teague officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Mitchell died Thursday, Feb. 25, at his residence.
   A former resident of Wedowee, Mr. Mitchell was born Mar. 31, 1931, son of 
the late Robert and Eliza McLeroy Mitchell. He served in the army during the 
Korean Conflict and was a utility supervisor with the city of Roanoke. His 
wife, Katherine Mitchell, preceded him in death.
   Survivors include three sons, Dennis Mitchell, Danny Mitchell and Timmy 
Mitchell, all of Roanoke; a brother, Tom Mitchell of Fairburn, Ga.; and three 
grandchildren.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Morris

   (ROANOKE) Margaret Carolyn Morris, 60, of Roanoke died Monday, Feb. 22, 
1993, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Ga.
   Services were Friday, Feb. 26, at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Roanoke, 
with Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating. Interment was at Pleasant Grove Baptist 
Church in Wadley, where she formerly was a member.
   Ms. Morris was born April 11, 1932, daughter of the late Eddie and Verbie 
Pearson Morris Sr.[,] in Randolph County, Ala. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah 
Baptist Church.
   One brother, Eddie Lewis (Bud) Morris Jr., preceded her in death.
   Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Pam Morris; one sister, Ms. Mildred 
Morris[;] and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were William Heard, Carl Cooley, Larry McFarland, Willie 
Wright, William Ware and Leon Hill.
   Vines Funeral Home of LaFayette was in charge of arrangements.

Leonard Cecil Kinsey

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Leonard Cecil Kinsey, 65, of Roanoke were 
Monday, Mar. 1, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Springfield Baptist Church, with Rev. 
Lindon Fields and Wesley Kinsey officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory 
Gardens with full military honors.
   Mrs. Kinsey died at Randolph County Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 27.
   A native of Monticello, Fla., Mr. Kinsey was born May 27, 1927, son of 
Leonard Jackson and Julia Christine Norris Kinsey. He was an Air Force staff 
sergeant and served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Mr. Kinsey was a 
member of Springfield Baptist Church and was a security guard with Russell 
Corporation. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mrs. Eunice K. 
Ward; and a brother, Weston Kinsey.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vire White Kinsey of Roanoke; two 
daughters, Mrs. Sherie Pinkard of Roanoke and Mrs. Judy Timmerman of Dothan; 
a son, Wesley Kinsey of Auburn; and three grandchildren.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Lee Hood Sr.

   (LANETT) Funeral services for Herbert Lee Hood Sr., 62, of Lanett, Ala., 
were Monday, Mar. 1, 1993, at 2 p.m. (EST) from Lanett First Church of the 
Nazarene with Revs. Robert Huff, Barney Brumbeloe and J. H. King officiating. 
Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett.
   Mr. Hood died Saturday, Feb. 27, near West Point, Ga.
   A native of Chambers County, Ala., Mr. Hood was born Nov. 7, 1930. He was 
the owner and operator of Hood's Flea Market in West Point. Mr. Hood was very 
active in Lanett First Church of the Nazarene, where he was a Sunday school 
teacher, church board member, van driver and member of the finance committee.
   Survivors include his wife, Syble Johnson Hood; two daughters, Angie 
Henderson of Valley and Teresa Jagielski of Athens, Ga.; one son, Herbert Lee 
Hood Jr. of Lanett; one sister, Elsie Mae Brown of Roanoke; three brothers, 
Monroe Hood of Valley, James Hood of Macon, Ga., and Charles Hood of 
Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren[;] and one great-grandchild.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service of Lanett.

James Dennis (Dink) Hester

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for James Dennis (Dink) Hester, 34, of Roanoke, 
Route 3, were Monday, Mar. 1, 1993, at 3 p.m. from Potash Church of God, with 
Revs. Charlie Bolt, Earl Rollins and Tim Whaley officiating. Burial was at 
Potash Cemetery.
   Mr. Hester died Saturday, Feb. 27, in Chambers County as a result of 
injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
   A lifelong resident of Roanoke, Mr. Hester was born Jan. 12, 1959, son of 
Wallace and Sarah Mitchell Hester. He was a self-employed pulpwooder and had 
served in the Alabama National Guard (Roanoke) for 14 years.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Connie Steeley Hester, and two sons, Jason 
and Matt Hester, all of Roanoke; his mother and stepfather, Mrs. Sarah F. 
Knight and Franklin Knight of Roanoke; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. 
Pemiliton Mitchell of Roanoke and E. A. Hester of Wadley; a sister, Mrs. 
Sharon Robinson of Roanoke; two brothers, Tony Hester and Roger Hester, both 
of Roanoke; and several nieces.
   Pallbearers were Herbert Denham, Jim Baldwin, Gordon Cameron, Robert 
Weaver, Manley Clack, Mike Fisher, Mark Baldwin, Charles Framell, Ted Strain, 
Willis Dye, Johnny Screws and Randy Black.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Paul Presnal

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Robert Paul Presnal, 34, of Route 2, 
Roanoke, will be held Wednesday, Mar. 3, 1993, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of 
Quattlebaum Funeral Home, with Rev. Gary Baugh officiating. Burial will follow 
at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mr. Presnal died Saturday, Feb. 27, in Chambers County.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Presnal was born May 13, 1958, 
son of Charles Hugh and Dorothy Presnal.
   Mr. Presnal was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents, 
Howard and Hattie Presnal.
   Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Presnal of Munith, Mich.; one sister, 
Debbie Goodrich of Ypsilanti, Mich.; and two brothers, Howard Presnal of 
Munith, Mich., and Charles Presnal of Princeton, Ind.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.

Claude Rushton

   (LaGRANGE, Ga.) Claude Rushton, 84, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday, Feb. 28, 
1993, at Florence Hand Home, LaGrange, after a lengthy illness.
   Mr. Rushton was born in Randolph County, Ala., on Jan. 21, 1909, son of the 
late Franklin W. and Pearl Vineyard Rushton. He was the retired owner and 
operator of Three Points Barber Shop, LaGrange, and had lived in LaGrange for 
the past 50 years. He was a member of Second Baptist Church and the oldest 
deacon. He was a member of Union Lodge #28, F&AM.
   Graveside services were in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange, on Tuesday, Mar. 
2, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jesse Hilton officiating.
   Surviving is his wife, Mrs. Frances Rushton of LaGrange. Roanoke H [sic] 
relatives include a niece, Mrs. Donna Norred, and two nephews, Gene Rushton 
and Tommy Rushton, all of Roanoke.

Robert Edward Fincher

   (TUCKER, Ga.) Robert Edward Fincher of Tucker, Ga., died at Crawford W. 
Long Hospital, Atlanta, on Sunday, Feb. 28, 1993.
   Mr. Fincher worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company as construction 
foreman for 43 years, retiring on Feb. 14, 1980. He was a life member of 
Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a member of Colonial Hills Baptist 
Church and served as a deacon of Inman Park Baptist Church and Glenwood 
Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lura Bailey Fincher of Tucker; two 
sisters, Mrs. Essie Young of Atlanta and Mrs. Renice Spratlin of Eva, Ala.; 
two brothers, Clint Fincher of Woodland and LeRoy Fincher of Warner Robins, 
Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Mar. 2, at A. S. Turner and Sons 
Funeral Home-Chapel, with Rev. Doug Silvey, Rev. Milton Kerr, and Rev. Doug 
Wilson officiating. Interment was at Providence Baptist Church, Woodland, at 
3 p.m.
   A. S. Turner and Sons of Decatur, Ga., was in charge of funeral 
arrangements in Georgia, with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of 
the local arrangements.

Vera Clyde Turbeville

   (WILDWOOD, Fla.) Graveside services for Miss Vera Clyde Turbeville, 84, of 
Wildwood, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, Ala., will be held Thursday, Mar. 4, 
1993, at 10 a.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke with Dr. Doug Turner 
officiating.
   Miss Turbeville died Saturday, Feb. 27, in Wildwood.
   Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. D. K. Turbeville, she was born Feb. 25, 
1909. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wildwood.
   Survivors include two nieces, Bell Ware and Wilma Turbeville, both of 
Hillsboro, Va.; and one nephew, of Wildwood.
   The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. 
Wednesday.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Georgia Mae Jackson

   (ROANOKE) Georgia Mae Jackson, 81, of Roanoke died Friday, Feb. 26, 1993, 
at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services for Ms. Jackson will be Wednesday, Mar. 3, at 1 p.m. (CST) 
at Stateline Baptist Church, Glenn, Ga., with Rev. Ollie Simpson, pastor, 
officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Cora Lee Godbee of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 
one son, William George Jackson of Fanwood, N.J.; three brothers, Jay Walton 
Jackson, William Jackson and Charlie Jackson, all of Chattanooga; three 
sisters, Ms. Emma Lou Jackson of Roanoke and Mrs. Annie Mae Carlton and Mrs. 
Cora M. Adams of Chattanooga; four grandchildren[;] and three great-
grandchildren.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke.

Robert Lovvorn Bain

   (HEFLIN) Robert Lovvorn Doc Bain, 63, of Rt. 1, Heflin died suddenly on 
Friday, Mar. 5, 1993, in University Hospital, Birmingham.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Mar. 8, at Morrison's Chapel United 
Methodist Church, with Rev. Cloyse Johnson and Rev. Steve Dempsey officiating. 
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Bain is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Bain of Heflin; four sons, 
James Robert Bob Bain of Heflin, Donald W. Bain of Oxford, Ronald W. Bain of 
The Netherlands, and John L. Bain of Heflin; two sisters, Mrs. Estelle Owen of 
Phenix City and Mary J. Bain of Anniston; one brother, Arthur L. Bain of 
Heflin; and six grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Lynn Bain, Benny Rollins, Jay Rollins, Steve Owen, Danny 
Rollins, Marty Bain and Carl Bain.
   Mr. Bain was a native of Randolph County. He was the former owner and 
operator of Bain Heating and Air Conditioning and a member of Morrison's 
Chapel United Methodist Church.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

LuDera Traylor

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for LuDera Traylor, 95, of Roanoke, were 
Tuesday, Mar. 9, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Ralph Worley officiating. Burial was at Concord Church cemetery.
   Mrs. Traylor died Monday, March 8, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A resident of Roanoke, Mrs. Traylor was born Jan. 30, 1898, the daughter of 
Lewis and Della Price Sims. She was preceded in death by her parents, her 
husband, Rudy M. Traylor, and a son, O'Neil Traylor. Mrs. Traylor was a member 
of North Main Christian Church.
   Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Audrey White of Westmont, Ill.; four 
sons, Roy Traylor of Stewart, Fla., Harold Traylor of Valley, Herbert Traylor 
of St. Louis, Mo., and James C. Traylor of Opelika; 16 grandchildren[;] and 11 
great-grandchildren.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Azrene Kaylor Johnson

   (SWANSEA, S.C.) Alice Azrene Kaylor Johnson, 80, of Swansea, S.C., formerly 
of Bowdon, Ga., died Friday, March 5, 1993, in Richland Memorial Hospital 
following a lengthy illness.
   Mrs. Johnson was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Carroll County, Ga., daughter of 
the late Levi and Sara Higgins Kaylor. She was retired from Warren Sewell 
Clothing Company of Bowdon and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in 
Graham. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Olin Johnson, in 
December 1984.
   She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Betty Brown of Swansea, S.C.; two 
brothers, J. W. Kaylor of Ranburne and Lindy Kaylor of Wedowee; four 
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were Sunday, Mar. 7, at 3 p.m. Ga. time from Shiloh 
Baptist Church, with Rev. Gus Young and Rev. Ray Runyan officiating. Music was 
by Mike Entrekin, Gita Spratlin and Margret Abrams.
   Rainwater and West Funeral Home, Inc., of Bowdon was in charge of the 
arrangements.

Dorothy White Carson

   (WADLEY) Dorothy White Carson, 61, of Wadley Rt. 1, died Tuesday, Mar. 9, 
at her residence.
   Mrs. Carson was born July 24, 1931, daughter of Monroe and Lurline White. 
She was a member of Forrester's Chapel United Methodist Church. Preceding her 
in death were her parents, a daughter, Mrs. Shelia Okrutny, and a son, 
Franklin Leroy Carson.
   Survivors include her husband, Delmar Carson; one daughter, Rebecca Clegg 
of Wadley; three sons, Gerson Carson of Carrollton, Ga., George Carson of 
Maplesville and Wyatt Carson of Alexander City; one sister, Frances Kirkland 
of Lincoln; and 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Services for Mrs. Carson were at 11 a.m. Thursday, Mar. 11, at Forrester's 
Chapel Methodist Church, with Rev. Steve Pilkington and Rev. Calvin Teal 
officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Pallbearers were Bill Clegg, James Clegg, Richard Lashley, James Lee, 
Julian Knight and John Carson.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home.

Shirley Dunlap Rollins

   (ROANOKE) Mrs. Shirley Dunlap Rollins, age 49, of Overton Mountain Drive, 
Roanoke, died Thursday, March 11, 1993, in Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, 
after an extended illness.
   Mrs. Rollins, a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, was a 
homemaker and a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church. She was the daughter of 
the late Homer and Celest Overton Dunlap.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at Welcome Home 
Baptist Church, with Rev. Rickey Pursley and Rev. Jody Overton officiating. 
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Rollins is survived by her husband, Theodore Rollins of Heflin; three 
daughters, Mrs. Terresa Cummings and Mrs. Connie Gay, both of Roanoke, and Ms. 
Leigh Murphy of Carrollton, Ga.; four sons, Phillip Halsey of Rock Mills and 
Freddie Justice, Billy Justice and Kenny Halsey, all of Roanoke; 12 
grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Ezzie Lee Tuten of Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Pearl 
Rice of Heflin, Mrs. Lenner Crenshaw of Dalton, Ga., and Mrs. Lexa Pike of 
LaGrange, Ga.; four brothers, J. B. Dunlap of Woodland, Chelsie Dunlap of 
Newell, and Denson Dunlap and Rickey Dunlap, both of Roanoke; and four 
stepchildren, Jo Ervin, Shirley Williams, Peggy Smith and James Rollins, all 
of Heflin.
   Pallbearers were Terry Dunlap, Jimmy Smith, Patrick Dunlap, Corey Keele, 
Steve Pilgrim and Shelton Rollins.
   Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Tollie Ezra Garrett

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Tollie Ezra Garrett, 84, of Roanoke, Rt. 2, 
were Saturday, March 6, 1993, at 11 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with 
Rev. Hugh Vines officiating. Burial was in Forrester's Chapel Church cemetery.
   Mr. Garrett died Thursday, March 4, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke 
after an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Roanoke, he was born August 27, 1908, son of Fred 
and Lisa Frances Gore Garrett. He was preceded in death by his parents; his 
stepfather, E. D. Whitley; two brothers, John Whitley and Grover Whitley; and 
a sister, Lila Mae Eubanks.
   Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Frances Benefield of Roanoke and Mrs. 
Pallie Ray of Rockford, and several nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Garrett's nephews served as pallbearers.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
   The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be 
made to one's favorite charity.

Lola K. Estes

   (CANTONMENT, Fla.) Funeral services for Mrs. Lola K. Estes, 89, of 
Cantonment, Fla., were Saturday, March 13, 1993, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Gilead 
United Methodist Church, with Rev. Clifford DeLee officiating. Burial followed 
in Mt. Gilead Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Estes died Thursday, March 11, at Baptist Manor Nursing Home in 
Pensacola, Fla. She was a native of Clay County, had lived most of her life in 
Clay and Chambers counties, and had lived in Cantonment since 1990. Mrs. Estes 
was a housewife and a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.
   She is survived by her husband, George Estes of Cantonment; one daughter, 
Gertie Mae Harris of Cantonment; two sons, William Allen Estes of Valley, 
Ala., and Edward Estes of Wadley, Ala.; three sisters, Inas Pinkston of 
Ashland, Ala., Meryl Estes of Lanett, Ala., and Buna Alford of Alexander City, 
Ala.; and 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Chuck Estes, Bruce Estes, Jeff Bennett, Jason Whaley, 
Tommy Harris and Tony Harris.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville was in charge of arrangements.

Eula Shaw Streeter

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Eula Shaw Streeter, 94, of 508 Stone 
Avenue, Roanoke, Ala., were Thursday, Mar. 11, 1993, at 3 p.m. at Word of Life 
Baptist Church, with Rev. Van White and Rev. Johnny Williams officiating. 
Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Streeter died Wednesday, Mar. 10, at Randolph County Hospital.
   She was born Dec. 15, 1898, daughter of John and Matilda Shaw, and was 
preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son, Elton Mitchell. She 
had been a retail sales clerk and was a member of Word of Life Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Streeter is survived by a daughter, Lucile Robinson, of Roanoke; a 
sister, Lourana Kirby of Woodland; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren
[;] and six great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jackie Lee Brown, Eric Barber, Parker Barber, Leroy 
Cofield, John Shaw and Junior Bowen.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke handled arrangements.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Tyrone Foster, 39, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
Mar. 9, 1993, at 1 p.m. from Peace & Goodwill Baptist Church with Rev. R. L. 
Heflin and Rev. L. B. Houston officiating.
   Mr. Foster died Thursday, Mar. 4, at Randolph County Hospital.
   Mr. Foster was born Nov. 6, 1953, son of Lorene Foster and James E. Rachel. 
One brother, Freddie Foster, preceded him in death.
   Survivors include his parents; seven sisters, Liz Presley of San Francisco, 
Calif., [and] Chris Phillips, Vickie Brown, Bridgett Foster, Deborah Houston, 
Gwen Rachel and Alison Sims, all of Roanoke; nine brothers, James Foster, 
Reginald Foster, Timothy Foster, Robert Staples, Larry Rachel, Everette 
Rachel, Donald Pearson, Paul Rachel, and Hilton Rachel, all of Roanoke; four 
children, Shanetta Winston, Dewanna Bell, Lamar Hill and Corey Bell, all of 
Roanoke; one grandchild[;] and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Towler Cobb

(ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Towler Cobb, 65, of Rock Mills 
will be at 1 p.m. today at Rock Mills Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Pope 
officiating.
   Mrs. Cobb died Monday, March 15, 1993, at West Georgia Medical Center in 
LaGrange.
   She was born Jan. 19, 1928 in Alabama. Mrs. Cobb was a member of the Rock

   She is survived by her husband, John W. Cobb of Rock Mills; a daughter, 
Johnnie Gail Pike of Savannah, Ga.; a sister, Gladys Staples of Roanoke; two 
brothers, Willie Pierce Towler of Rock Mills and Pete Towler of Wedowee; and 
two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Brandon Cobb, Bobby Brown, Michael Brown, Jamie Towler, 
Junior Towler and Jimmy Blackman.

Ola Mae Gunn

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Ola Mae Gunn, 87, of Strozier Street, 
Roanoke, were Saturday, Mar. 13, 1993, at 2 p.m. at Peace and Goodwill Baptist 
Church in Roanoke, with Rev. L. B. Houston officiating. Interment was at the 
church cemetery.
   Mrs. Gunn died Tuesday, Mar. 9, at Randolph County Hospital.
   She was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church in Roanoke.
   Mrs. Gunn is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Nancy R. Houston of Roanoke, 
Miss Cornelia Gunn and Mrs. Lelia Jackson of Atlanta, Ga, and Mrs. Dollie M. 
Ellis of Youngstown, Ohio; one son, Emmitt Gunn Jr. of Youngstown, Ohio; three 
brothers, Willie D. Phillips and Lyn Phillips of Anniston, and Roy Phillips of 
Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary L. Smith and Mrs. Ethel Tucker of Roanoke

Bennie Rufus Sims

   (ROANOKE) Services for Bennie Rufus Sims, 57, of Roanoke were Thursday, 
March 18[, 1993,] at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul Baptist Church in Roanoke, with 
Revs. J. D. Darden and R. L. Heflin officiating. Interment was at Mount Pisgah 
Baptist Church Cemetery in Roanoke.
   Mr. Sims died Sunday, March 14, 1993.
   He was born on Sept. 24, 1935 in Stroud (Chambers Co.), son of tghe [sic] 
late Warren Sims and Annie Pearl Allen Sims. He was a member of the Saint Paul 
Baptist Church, and a retired employee of the Roanoke Utility Board after 21 
years of service.
   Pallbearers were Thomas Heflin, Leonard Holliday, Remon Morgan, Wilie 
Potts, Walter Heflin, Walter Nolan and Sammarintino Brooks.
   Mr. Sims was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Bell Morgan. He is 
survived by two sons, Sandy F. Sims Sr. (Dicie) and Randy W. Sims, both of 
Roanoke; one daughter, Jackie Foster of Roanoke; two brothers, Arthur Lee Sims 
of Akron, Ohio, and Charlie Joe Sims (Helen Diane) of Roanoke; thirteen 
grandchildren[;] and one great-grandchild.
   Clark Memorial Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Clara Dessie Fetner Blackmon

   (ROANOKE) Services for Clara Dessie Fetner Blackmon, 83, of Rt. 2, Roanoke, 
were Saturday, March 20, 1993, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with 
Revs. Billy Joe Fetner, Maynard Fetner and Handley Fetner officiating. Burial 
followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Blackmon died Thursday, March 18, at West Georgia Medical Center in 
LaGrange.
   Mrs. Blackmon, who was born Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1909, in Alabama, was a 
member of Lowell United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
   Pallbearers were Manley Cagle, Floyd Fetner, L. A. Robinson, L. G. Fetner, 
Bobby Messer and Wyatt Fetner.
   Mrs. Blackmon is survived by her husband, Mayo C. Blackmon of Roanoke; one 
daughter, Alice Favret of Metairie, La.; one granddaughter, Malynda R. 
Williams of Huntsville; one grandson, Wilson W. Williams of Huntsville; one 
brother, W. C. Fetner of Roanoke; and three great-grandchildren.

William Appleby

   (ROANOKE) William Sambo Appleby, died Sunday, Mar. 14, 1993, in Randolph 
County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Friday, Mar. 19, at Bethlehem Baptist 
Church in Standing Rock, with Rev. W. A. Trammell and Rev. William R. Terry 
officiating. Burial followed at the adjoining cemetery.
   A native of Chambers County, Mr. Appleby was the son of the late T. R. and 
Dora Appleby. He joined Canaan Baptist Church at an early age. He had resided 
in New York City for a number of years.
   Mr. Appleby is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty Appleby of Roanoke; one 
son, Jessie Atkinson of LaGrange, Ga.; two daughters, Ms. Martha Appleby of 
Roanoke and Mrs. Gloria Burden of LaGrange, Ga.; ten grandchildren[;] and a 
host of nieces and nephews.

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Flossie Mae Nelson Herndon, 46, of Rt. 1,

   Mrs. Herndon died Friday, Mar. 19, at West Georgia Medical Center in 
LaGrange.
   A former resident of Opelika, Mrs. Herndon was born Jan. 3, 1947, daughter 
of Caliph Hardy and Effie Mae Hemmings Nelson. She was a member of Zion 
Baptist Church in Woodland and was employed by Amoco Fabrics & Fibers Company.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Cindy Pollard Handley; a son, Tim 
Pollard; and a granddaughter, Amanda Paige Pollard, all of Roanoke; six 
sisters, Mrs. Agnes Cosper of Franklin, Ga., Mrs. Ethel Chadwick of Olathe, 
Kansas, Mrs. Lorene Howington of Thomaston, Ga., Mrs. Clovis Williamson of 
LaGrange, Ga., Mrs. Mary Hall of Wadley, and Mrs. Nellie Butler of Newnan, 
Ga.; four brothers, Freddy Nelson of Lineville, Lee Nelson of Rutledge, Ga., 
James Crawford of Carrollton, Ga., and Wendell Cammons of Olathe, Kansas.
   Nephews of Mrs. Herndon served as pallbearers.

James D. Irwin

   (WEDOWEE) James D. Irwin, 46, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Sunday, Mar. 21, 
1993, in East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after an extended illness.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Mar. 23, at Union Hill 
Congregational Methodist Church, with Rev. Jim Sims and Rev. Lendon Fields 
officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Irwin is survived by his wife, Mrs. Iveller W. Irwin of Wedowee; two 
sisters, Mrs. Mildred Walker of Arlington, Ga., and Mrs. Mary Joe Bellflower 
of Tifton, Ga.; three brothers, Gay Irwin of Arlington, Ga., Junior Irwin of 
Atlanta, and Robert Irwin of Anniston; one sister-in-law, Ione Bowen of 
LaGrange, Ga.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Irwin was a native of Clay County, having lived in Randolph County for 
the past 15 years. He had also lived in Tampa, Fla., for a number of years. He 
was retired from textile work and steel plant work. He had also been employed 
by Randolph County Farmers Cooperative in Wedowee. He was the son of the late 
David Andrew and Myrtle Davis Irwin.
   Pallbearers were Dr. Ross David, Cecil Newbern, Tommy Newbern, Larry 
Wortham, Carl Melton and Bobby Messer.

Ethel Bovine Windsor

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Ethel Bovine (Bovie) Windsor, 90, of 
Roanoke, were Monday, Mar. 22, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel, with Rev. E. G. Clark officiating. Burial was at Midway United 
Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Miss Windsor died Sunday, Mar. 21, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Miss Windsor was born Oct. 12, 
1902, daughter of Chill and Beulah Langley Windsor. She was a retired Randolph 
County school teacher, a member of AEA and a member of Rock Springs Christian 
Church.
   Survivors include her brother, T. Z. Windsor of Roanoke, and several nieces 
and nephews.
   Miss Windsor's nephews served as pallbearers.

Heribert W. Skolud

   (WEDOWEE) Heribert W. Skolud, age 81, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Monday, Mar. 
22, 1993, in Lineville Nursing Facility, Lineville, after an extended illness.
   Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Mar. 24, at Pilgrim's Rest 
Baptist Church, with Rev. Steve Dempsey officiating. Burial will follow at the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Skolud is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hilde Skolud of Wedowee; one 
daughter, Mrs. Barbara Huddleston of Wedowee; one son, Heinz Skolud of 
Birmingham; and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Peter Herda, Glenn Traylor, Alex Huddleston, Arthur 
Bain, Walter Huddleston, Eddie Lindley, Vincent Smith, Roy Lindley and Earl 
Huddleston.
   Mr. Skolud was a native of Schwintochlowitz, Germany. He lived in Atlanta 
for 15 years and in Randolph County for the past 18 years. He was retired as a 
consulting engineer with a soft drink company. He was a graduate of the 
University of Berlin.
   Mr. Skolud will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, until one 
hour prior to funeral services. He will lie in state at the church for one 
hour.

Frances Louise Malaier

   (GIG HARBOR, Wash.) Frances Louise Malaier, 71, a former resident of 
Montgomery, Ala., died Mar. 22, 1993, in Gig Harbor, Wash. She was born July 
18, 1921, in Almond, Randolph County, Ala.
   Ms. Malaier was a retired civil servant from the State of Alabama and a 
member of Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Gig Harbor.
   Family members include two sons, William Malaier of Federal Way, Wash., and 
Michael Malaier of Montgomery; a daughter, Patricia Malaier of Gig Harbor; two 
sisters, LaVerne Bienenfeld and Lucille Stephens of Gig Harbor; a brother, 
Herbert Harris of Laurel, Md.; and four grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Mar. 25 at the Haven of Rest 
Funeral Home, Gig Harbor, with interment at Haven of Rest Memorial Park.

Ben Oliver McDonald

   (ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for Ben Oliver McDonald, 61, of Rock Mills 
were Sunday, Mar. 28, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Rock Mills First Baptist Church, 
with Revs. Tony McManus , Clayton Scott and O. C. Reason officiating. Burial 
was at Rock Mills Cemetery.
   Mr. McDonald died suddenly at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika on 
Friday, Mar. 26.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. McDonald was born Dec. 18, 1931, son of 
Benjamin Taft and Maggie Louise Hicks McDonald. He served in the army during 
the Korean War and was a member of Rock Mills First Baptist Church and the 
Randolph County Historical Society. He owned and operated McDonald Nursery and 
Garden Center in Rock Mills. He was with the Alabama Extension Service as an 
agricultural agent for a number of years before returning home to establish 
his business.
   Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Maggie Bonner of Rock Mills, and a 
sister, Mrs. Pat Evans of Pendleton, S.C.
   Pallbearers were John Pearson, Fred Bowers, Joe Walker, Jim Waldrep, Randy 
Weathers and Jim Robinson.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Addie Mae Deese

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Mrs. Addie Mae Deese, 84, of Bowdon, Ga., died Saturday, Mar. 
27, 1993, in Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, Ga., following a lengthy 
illness.
   She was born in Randolph County, Ala., on Jan. 5, 1909, the daughter of the 
late Lonso and Susie Ward Stapler. Mrs. Deese was a lifelong resident of this 
area, a homemaker, and a member of Corinth Baptist Church and the Adult Sunday 
School Class.
   She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susie Mae Deese, and a 
brother, Wilson Stapler.
   Survivors include her husband, William Deese, to whom she was married for 
67 years; two sons, Willie J. Deese and Bruce Deese, both of Carrollton; five 
daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Benefield of Waco, Ga., and Mrs. Opal Blackmon, Mrs. 
Lois Grainger, Mrs. Elssie Smith and Mrs. Alice Warren of Carrollton; 15 
grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, 
Vance Stapler of Newnan, Ga.; four sisters, Mrs. Lois Panell, Mrs. Adell 
Burnham and Mrs. Lucille Robinson of Newnan, and Mrs. Wynella Meadows of 
Sargent, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lois Stapler of Newnan; [and] nieces and 
nephews.
   Funeral services were Monday, Mar. 29, at 2 p.m. from Corinth Baptist 
Church, with Rev. Elmer Carson, Rev. Winford Spruill and Rev. Harold Freeman 
officiating. Music was by Mabel Williamson and Gloria Joyner. Pallbearers were 
Donny Grainger, Ricky Smith, Curtis Benefield, Billy Joe Blackmon, John 
McQueen and Doyle Folds. Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Rainwater-West Funeral Home of Bowdon was in charge of arrangements.

   (LAFAYETTE) Buren Burroughs, 70, of LaFayette died Tuesday, Mar. 16, 1993, 
at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Funeral services were at Sanders Funeral Home Chapel, LaFayette, on 
Thursday, Mar. 18, with burial at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Clay 
County. The Rev. Clifford DeLee officiated.
   Mr. Burroughs was born in Clay County on May 19, 1922. He was a retired 
carpenter, having worked with Merritt Brothers Construction Co. for 27 years. 
He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Community Baptist Church, 
LaFayette.
   Survivors include his wife, Annice Burroughs of LaFayette; three sons, 
Donald E. Burroughs and Roy M. Burroughs of Columbus, Ga., and Christopher B. 
Burroughs of LaFayette; his mother, Early Burroughs of Wedowee; three sisters, 
Verna Mae Longshore [no location given], Hazel Gray of Jackson, Miss., and 
Mohee Foster of Wedowee; two brothers, James Hoyt Burroughs of Huntsville and 
Bobby Burroughs of Wadley; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

George Traylor Lovvorn

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Funeral services for George Traylor Lovvorn, 79, of 
Alexander City, were on Tuesday, Mar. 16, 1993 at 3 p.m. from Heritage Chapel 
Funeral Home. Rev. Larry Ingram officiated. Burial was in Alex City Cemetery.
   Mr. Lovvorn died Saturday, Mar. 13, following an extended illness. He was 
born July 2, 1913 in Randolph County.
   Mr. Lovvorn is survived by his wife, Sarah Holliday Lovvorn; one son, 
Cleveland Lovvorn of Lees Summit, Mo.; one daughter, Barbara Green of 
Mableton, Ga.[;] three half-brothers, Harold Williams and Charlie Williams of 
Roanoke and Robert Williams of LaGrange, Ga.; three half-sisters, Flonnie 
Robinson and Nora Adams of Roanoke and Pauline Williams of Columbus, Ga.; four 
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Grace McMurray Simms

   (MONTGOMERY) Grace McMurray Simms was born in Roanoke on Sept. 13, 1899, 
the daughter of William Harmon McMurray and Corinia Reeves McMurray. Her early 
health was fragile, but her red hair denoted the spirit which marked her life.
   She married in her twenties after a brief dramatic career, but that 
marriage ended in divorce. In her forties she married B. F. Simms, and they 
lived in Birmingham, where he did significant work in various forms of 
rehabilitation. They were married for 45 years until his death in Nov. 
1991. They spent their last years at Cedar Crest nursing home in Montgomery, 
here she died peacefully on Mar. 26, 1993, at the age of 93.
   She is survived by her sister, Ruth McMurray Brooks of Atlanta, and many 
nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services for Mrs. Simms were Sunday, Mar. 28, at 2 p.m. from the 
chapel of Quattlebaum Funeral Home, with Dr. John Tate officiating. Burial was 
in Cedarwood cemetery.
   Pallbearers were members of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class of Roanoke 
First United Methodist Church.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
