OBITUARIES:

Carl William Davenport

   (WOODLAND) Carl William Davenport, 75, of Rt. 1, Woodland, died Tuesday, 
Jan. 26, 1993, 
at his residence after an extended illness.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Liberty East Baptist 
Church with Rev. 
Benny Wade and Luther Goodin officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Davenport is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Owens Davenport of 
Woodland; one 
daughter, Mrs. Carlene Laws of Bolivia, N.C.; one son, Curtis Davenport of 
Greenwood, S.C.; 
one step-daughter, Mrs. Genice Stapler of Ranburne; three step-sons, Robert 
Owens of Gadsden, 
Arlin Owens of Woodland, and Jerry Lynn Owens of Carrollton, Ga.; 20 step-
grandchildren[;] and 
15 step-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Grant Noles, Wade Noles, Smith Brown Jr., Kevin Greenleaf, 
Donnie Fortson 
and Steve Owens.
   Mr. Davenport was a native of Greenwood, S.C., who lived in Bremen, Ga., 
for a number of 
years. He has lived in Randolph County for the past four years. He was a 
veteran of World War II 
and a member of Valley Grove Baptist Church in Blount County, Ala. He was 
retired as an 
insulator with Daniel Construction Company.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Harvey Lee Wilson

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Harvey Lee Wilson, 77, of Franklin, Ga., died at his 
residence Saturday, 
Jan. 23, 1993, after several months of declining health.
   Funeral services were conducted Monday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. from Gray Hill 
Church of God, 
Woodland, with Pr. Jones Phillips and Rev. Hancel Parmer officiating. 
Interment was in the 
church cemetery.
   Vocal music was rendered by Louwanna and Bobby Prince, accompanied by Mrs. 
Elaine 
Merrell. Pallbearers were Greg Nixon, Ronnie Nixon, Allen Fulgham, Kyle 
Fulgham, Travis 
Wilson, Kent Wilson, Lance Wilson, Bradd Adams and Rodney Wilson.
   Mr. Wilson was a native of Randolph County, Ala. He was retired from 
Chrysler Motors Corp., 
Detroit, Mich., as a foreman. He had lived in Heard County since his 
retirement and was married 
to the late Letha Mae Gore, who preceded him in death several years ago. He 
was a member of 
Gray Hill Church of God.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Rushing of LaGrange, Ga., 
and Mrs. Glenda 
Adams of Snellville, Ga.; four sons, Jessie Wilson of Cedar Bluff, Ala., 
Tearance Wilson of 
Roopville, Ga., Ezra Wilson of Bowdon, Ga., and Micheal [sic?] Wilson of 
Carrollton, Ga.; 
30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Julius Wilson of 
Wadley and Ezra 
Wilson, Curtis Wilson and Murphy Wilson of Woodland.
   Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home of Franklin, Ga., was in charge of 
arrangements.

Eva Haynes Iverson

   (GRAHAM) Eva Haynes Iverson, 88, of Route 1, Graham, died Thursday, Jan. 
28, 1993, at 
her residence following a lengthy illness.
   She was born in Randolph County April 14, 1904, daughter of the late Lewis 
and Mindy Stewart 
Haynes. Mrs. Iverson was a lifelong resident of this area, a retired school 
teacher, and member of 
Campground Methodist Church.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cliff Iverson, Mar. 6, 
1990.
   Survivors include son Robert Iverson of Decatur, Ala.; two daughters, Mrs. 
Jean Wright of 
Bowdon, Ga., and Mrs. Nancy Jordan of Carrollton, Ga.; seven grandchildren; 
eight great-
grandchildren; four brothers, Cleveland Haynes of Wedowee, Enos Haynes of 
Seattle, Wash., 
Paschal Haynes of Athens, Ga., and Lanier Haynes of Dothan; and one sister, 
Mrs. Elve Parker 
of Woodland.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. (Ga. time) from 
Campground Methodist 
Church, with Rev. Ellis Kennedy and Rev. Tommy Willingham officiating. Music 
was furnished 
by the church choir under the direction of Harvey Ward. Grandsons served as 
pallbearers.
   Rainwater-West Funeral Home of Bowdon, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

Nora Lee Roundtree

   (WEDOWEE) Nora Lee Roundtree, 85, of Wedowee, died Thursday, Jan. 28[, 
1993,] at 
Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. Roundtree was born in Wedowee on Oct. 19, 1907, daughter of the late 
William and 
Epsie Sterling Williams.
   Survivors include one son, Horace (Bobby) Roundtree of Wedowee; three 
daughters, Ms. 
Isabel Wright and Mrs. Nora Ezell Lee of Wedowee and Mrs. Elizabeth Trammell 
of Roanoke; 
and 28 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Jack Roundtree, 
preceded her 
in death.
   Services for Mrs. Roundtree were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 at Zion Rest 
Baptist Church, 
County Road 56, Wedowee, with Rev. R. L. Smith officiating. Interment was in 
the church 
cemetery.
   Casket attendants were grandsons, and flower attendants were granddaughters 
and friends.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Mary Eris Gay Sikes

   (ROANOKE) Mary Eris Gay Sikes, 80, of Rt. 3, Roanoke, died Saturday, Jan. 
30, 1993, at 
her residence as the result of a fire.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, at Big Springs Baptist 
Church, with Rev. 
David Daniel, Rev. Gus Young and Rev. Steve Dempsey officiating. Burial was in 
the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Sikes is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Janella Prince of Oneonta and 
Mrs. Mary Nell 
Green of Roanoke; one son, Jerry Gay of Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; eight great-
grandchildren; 
one sister, Mrs. Nell Satterwhite of Hayward, Calif.; and one brother, Frank 
Heard of Woodland.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Mrs. Sikes was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was 
preceded in death 
by three sons. She was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church, Big Springs 
Home 
Demonstration Club and WMU.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Terry Lewis Marshall

   (LANETT) Services for Terry Lewis Marshall, 32, were at 3 p.m. (CST) 
Wednesday, Jan. 27, 
at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, Lanett, with Rev. Louis Upshaw presiding. 
Interment was in the 
church cemetery.
   Mr. Marshall died Thursday, Jan. 21 at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital 
in Valley, Ala.
   He was born in Chambers County, Ala., on Jan. 16, 1961, in Lanett.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Janice Marshall of Five Points; two sons, 
Kewana and 
Michael Marshall of Atlanta, Ga.; his father, Earnest Lee Williams Jr. of 
LaFayette; his 
stepmother, Mrs. Nellie Ruth Williams of LaFayette; 11 sisters, Mrs. 
Clementine W. Hutchinson, 
Ms. Barbara A. Winston, Mrs. Sandra Elaine Evans, Mrs. Jackie Summers, Ms. 
Angelia (Ankie) 
Williams, Mrs. Lisa Cheeks and Mrs. Roslyn Lockhart, all of Lanett, Mrs. 
Deborah Ward of 
Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Clenteria Porter and Ms. Alice Williams, both of 
LaFayette, and Mrs. 
Ethel (Vickie) Wilcox of Atlanta; and six brothers, Robert D. Williams of

Earl M. Gay

   (HOGANSVILLE, GA.) Services for Earl M. Gay, 69, of Hogansville, Ga., were 
Wednesday, 
Jan. 27[, 1993,] in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in 
Hogansville. 
Rev. Dan MacMinn officiated, and interment was in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in 
Hogansville. 
Pallbearers were David Beard, Carey Atkinson, Bubba Atikinson [sic], Randy 
Slaughter, 
Al Cook and Henry Smith.
   Mr. Gay died Monday, Jan. 25 at his residence in Hogansville.
   Mr. Gay was born Dec. 11, 1923 in Randolph County, Ala., son of the late 
Harvey and Ellen 
Veal Gay. He had lived in Hogansville for the past 10 years, having retired as 
a driver for 
Transus Freight Co. He was a former resident of West Point and served from 
1953 until 1968 
as a lieutenant in the West Point Police Department. He was an Army veteran of 
World War II 
and was a member and former deacon of Roper Heights Baptist Church in West 
Point.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Deborah Bragg of Hogansville and Mrs. 
Diane Betts 
of Powder Springs; one son, Larry E. Gay of Pine Mountain; one sister, Mrs. 
Dora Denney of 
Hogansville; one brother, Floyd Gay of LaGrange; and six grandchildren.
   Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville was in charge of 
arrangements.

Winnie McLeod Whitman

   (LINEVILLE) Winnie McLeod Whitman, 93, of Lineville, formerly of Randolph 
County, 
died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1993, in Lineville Nursing Home after an extended 
illness.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at Smyrna Baptist Church, 
with Rev. Cal 
Ledbetter and Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Whitman is survived by one sister, Mrs. Emmitt Williams of 
Milledgeville, Ga.; two 
brothers, Monroe McLeod of Gulf Shores and Woodrow McLeod of Lineville; and 
three step-
grandchildren, Bill, Dennis and Keith Whitman.
   Pallbearers were Joe McLeod, Wendell Yarbrough, Harbart Cofield, Phil 
Foster, Don 
McLeod, Grover McLeod, Cleve McLeod and Fred McLeod.
   Mrs. Whitman was a native of Randolph County. She was the daughter of the 
late William 
and Nancy Johns McLeod. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin 
Williams. She 
was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church, Oxford.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Annie Dunson Tomlin

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Dunson Tomlin, 90, of Roanoke, 
formerly of 
Talladega, were Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1993, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel, with Bro. 
Joe French and Bro. J. B. Marlow officiating. Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Tomlin died Sunday, Jan. 31, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Tomlin was born May 3, 1902, daughter of 
Henry Walker 
and Sarah Frances Hester Dunson. She was a member of First Baptist Church of 
Talladega 
and Garden Club.
   Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Sayre Lois D. Tanner of Roanoke; a 
brother, Leroy Dunson 
of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
   Nephews of Mrs. Tomlin served as pallbearers.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Stewart

   (WOODLAND) Bernice Stewart, 86, of Rt. 2, Woodland, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 
1993, in 
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
   Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Oak Grove Church 
of Christ, with 
Bro. W. C. Cofield and Bro. Donald Davis officiating. Burial will follow in 
the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Stewart is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Cecil Brown of Woodland; one 
son, Lloyd 
Stewart of Woodland; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two 
great-great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Wayne Messer, Mark Parmer, James Stewart, Marlin 
Stewart, Ted Brown 
and Todd Parrish.
   Mrs. Stewart was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was 
a homemaker, 
a farmer and textile employee. She was a member of Oak Grove Church of Christ. 
She was the 
daughter of the late Tom Bailey and Sarah Barsh Bailey.
   Mrs. Stewart will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, until 
one hour prior to 
funeral services. She will lie in state at the church for one hour.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

William P. Poor

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Rev. William P. Poor, 78, of Route 1, 
Roanoke, were 
held Sunday, Jan. 31, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Shady Creek Christian Church, with 
Rev. Gary 
Baugh and Rev. Harold Bonner officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
   The Rev. Mr. Poor died Thursday, Jan. 28, at George H. Lanier Hospital in 
Valley.
   A Randolph County native, he was born Apr. 19, 1914, son of Will Penn and 
Nancy Swann 
Poor. He served in the Army during WWII and was a self-employed farmer and a 
member of 
Shady Creek Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gladys White Poor of Roanoke; two sisters, 
Mrs. Myrtie 
Will Windsor of Wadley and Mrs. Susie Virginia Windsor of Roanoke; and several 
nieces 
and nephews.
   Pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Poor. Honorary pallbearers were William B. 
Norred, John C. 
Benefield, Curtis Adcock, Dr. Mack Rumbley, Jack Potts, Darie Ellis and Esker 
Black.

Rev. Lonnie Cammon Marbury

   (LANETT) Services for Rev. Lonnie Cammon Marbury, 77, of Lanett, were at 
11:30 a.m. 
(EST) Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1993, at Goodsell United Methodist Church in Lanett, 
with Rev. 
Jimmy Huguley and Rev. Alfred L. Shackelford, pastor, officiating. Interment 
was in Rest 
Haven Memorial Gardens, Lanett.
   He was born July 29, 1915, in Kellyton, Coosa County, Ala., son of the late 
Lonnie Leonard 
and Vera Taylor Marbury. He died Friday, Jan. 29.
   Some of the appointments the Rev. Mr. Marbury served during his 41 years as 
an active 
Methodist minister were in Randolph, Chambers and Clay counties. As a member 
of the 
North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church, he served on several 
boards and 
agencies, including the Board of Trustees of Homes for the Aging.
   Survivors include three sons, Herbert L. Marbury of Decatur, Ga., and Hosea 
and Alfred 
Marbury [no location given]; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Traylor of St. Louis, 
Mo., and 
Mrs. Amy Baker of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Sherrill Marbury of Pittsburgh, 
Pa.; and nine 
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke.

Charles Mabry Williams

   (NEWELL) Charles Mabry Williams, 70, of Route One, Newell, died Monday, 
Feb. 8, 1993, 
at his residence following a brief illness.
   He was born in Randolph County, Alabama, May 5, 1922, the son of the late 
Dempsey and 
Mary Hix Williams. He was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of 
Antioch Baptist 
Church, a retired employee of Bremen-Bowden Investment Company, and an army 
veteran of 
World War II.
   He was preceded in death by three brothers, Amos Williams, Morris Williams 
and J. T. 
Williams.
   Survivors include two brothers, Hoyt Williams of Bowdon, Ga., and D. M. 
Williams Jr. of 
Tallapoosa, Ga.; and a sister, Mrs. Mary Ella Beam of Bowdon.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. from Antioch Baptist 
Church, with 
Rev. Donald Triplett officiating. Organ music will be furnished by Mrs. James 
Ray Kirby. 
Pallbearers will be James Ray Kirby, F. L. Smith, Warren H. Williams, J. C. 
Camp, Luther 
Beam and Larry Beam. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Wilbert Rollo Chappell, 87, of Roanoke, were at 2

officiating and Rev. Michael Strong, pastor, participating.
   Mr. Chappell died at his home on Strozier Street[,] Thursday, Jan. 28.
   He was born in Wedowee, Randolph County, Ala., on Oct. 6, 1905, son of the 
late Sanford 
and Bell Dora Stephens Chappell. He was a member of Mt. Bethel United 
Methodist Church.
   Survivors include seven nieces, Mrs. Annie Jones of Roanoke, Mrs. Mary Boyd 
of Anniston, 
Mrs. Bessie Mitchell and Mrs. Lue Lindsey of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Codell Smith 
and Mrs. Eva 
Mae Glenn of Leeds[,] and Mrs. Augusta Taylor of Bessemer; five nephews, Jim 
Smith and 
John Will Chappell of Roanoke, James Major Chappell of Tuskegee, Joe Ed 
Chappell of New 
York[,] and Fred Chappell Jr. of Tuscaloosa; and a host of grandnieces and 
grandnephews.

Vera Johnson Trent

   (COLA. S.C.) Funeral services for Vera Johnson Trent, 90, of Cola, S.C., 
formerly of Roanoke, 
Ala., were Monday, Feb. 8, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Roanoke First United Methodist

Rev. Milton Booth officiating. Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Trent died Friday, Feb. 5, at her residence.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Trent was born Aug. 7, 1902, daughter of B. 
D. and Ellen 
Martin Johnson. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church of 
Cola, S.C. 
During her family's long residence in Roanoke, she was active in the works of 
First Methodist 
Church. Her husband, the later Weber D. Trent Sr., was owner and operator of 
Trent's Pharmacy.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Janet T. Seeley, and a son, Weber D. 
Trent Jr., both of Cola, 
S.C.; four grandchildren[;] and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Braxton Bailey, Robert Ford, Roy Reeves, Tom Dorman, John 
B. Stevenson 
and James Lane.

Dina Taylor

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Edna Winona (Dina) Taylor, 73, of Roanoke 
will be 
Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. 
Olin 
Sheppard and Rev. Harold Bonner officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Taylor died Monday, Feb. 15, in Roanoke.
   A resident of Roanoke since 1943, Mrs. Taylor was born in Talladega County, 
daughter of 
Franklin and Myrtie Dixson Burgess. She was a member of Trinity Baptist 
Church, the Alabama 
Peace Officers Association, and was area representative for the Salvation 
Army. Mrs. Taylor was 
a retired officer of the Roanoke Police Department. She was preceded in death 
by her husband, 
Howard Clark Taylor.
   Survivors include her son, Edd Taylor; three grandchildren[;] and one great-
grandchild.
   Pallbearers will be Carl Sellers, Howard Bailey, Bill Ford, T. B. Moore, 
Charlie Harris and 
Buford Bishop.
   Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. C. B. Primm, Don Quick and all officers of

   (THOMASTON, Ga.) Funeral services for Rufus A. Eichelberger, 84, of 
Thomaston, Ga.,

Congregational Christian Church, Roanoke, with Rev. Ralph Worley officiating. 
Burial was 
at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Eichelberger died Thursday, Feb. 11, at Providence Health Care Center 
in Thomaston.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Eichelberger was born Aug. 28, 1908, son of 
Charles Wirt 
and Lula White Eichelberger. He was a member of North Main Congregational 
Christian 
Church and the John B. Gordon Chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. His 
parents and 
his wife, Mrs. Audrey Brown Eichelberger, preceded him in death.
   Survivors include two sons, James R. Eichelberger of Anniston and Charles 
F. Eichelberger Sr. 
of Thomaston, Ga.; four grandchildren[;] and seven great[-]grandchildren.

Franklin Leroy Carson

   (FT. HOCKLEY, TEX.) Funeral services for Franklin Leroy Carson, age 37, of

   Mr. Carson died Thursday, Feb. 11, in Chambers County, Ala., as a result of 
injuries sustained 
in an automobile accident.
   A Randolph County, Ala.[,] native, Mr. Carson was born Feb.15, 1955, son of 
Colbert Delmar 
and Dorothy Lela White Carson. He was a member of Lane's Chapel United 
Methodist Church 
and was a welding supervisor with Sterling Steel Company. A son, Timothy 
Carson, preceded 
him in death.
   Survivors include four daughters, Kristie Carson, Michele Carson, Jennifer 
Carson and Heather 
Carson of Roanoke; three sons, Bryan Carson, Adam Carson and Lathan Carson of 
Roanoke; his 
former wife, Mrs. Patricia Carson of Roanoke; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Delmar

   (ROANOKE) Howard Smedley, 82, of Roanoke, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1993[,] in 
Atlanta, Ga.
   Mr. Smedley was a member of Rehope Baptist Church.
   Survivors include four daughters, Wyvonnie Lindsey of Decatur, Ga., Mattie

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Lily Bernice Owen, 92, of Rt. 1, Roanoke 
were Tuesday, 
Feb. 16, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Rock Springs Christian Church, with Revs. Roger 
Florence and 
Stanley Yarbrough officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Owen died Sunday, Feb. 14, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke 
after an extended 
illness.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Owen was born Feb. 6, 1901, daughter of Noah 
and Ludie 
Sherrer Owen. She was a member of Rock Springs Christian Church and the 
Homemakers Club. 
She had been a housewife and a spinner at Handley Mills. Mrs. Owen was 
preceded in death by 
her parents; her husband, Mr. Y. J. (Jack) Owen; and two sons, Milton Owen and 
Jackie Owen.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Gray of Valley and Mrs. 
Jeanette Potts of 
Roanoke; two sons, Bill Owen of Roanoke and Calvin Owen of Melbourne, Fla.; 
two daughters-
in-law, Mrs. Joyce Owen of Roanoke and Mrs. Evelyn Owen of Melborne [sic], 
Fla.; a son-in-law, 
Hubert Potts of Roanoke[;] four sisters, Mrs. Effuie Bennett and Mrs. Dale 
Clark of Roanoke[,] 
Mrs. Ethel Calhoun of Valley[,] and Mrs. Rosa Simmons of Baltimore, Md.; two 
sisters-in-law, 
Mrs. Vera Brown of Roanoke and Mrs. Izora Bassett of Dublin, Ga.; ten 
grandchildren; 13 great-

Dr. James R. Hammond

   (NEWNAN, Ga.) Dr. James R. Hammond, DVM, of Newnan, Ga., died Saturday, 
Feb. 12, 
1993, at his residence.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of 
McKoon Funeral Home 
with burial at Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Dr. Hammond operated the Peachtree Animal Clinic for 20 years. He was the 
son of Dorothy 
Louise Hammond and the late Floyd Hammond.
   Dr. Hammond is also survived by three sisters, Betty Maples of Anniston, 
Ala., Patsy Cole of 
Augusta, Ga., and Kaye Bailey of Roanoke, Ala.; and two brothers, Barry 
Hammond of Roanoke 
and Vaxter Hammond of Woodbine, Ga.
   The family asks that instead of flowers, donations be made to Big Springs 
Baptist Church.

Kathryn Hodges Awbrey

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Kathryn Hodges Awbrey, 81, of Roanoke 
were 
Monday, Feb. 15, 1993 at 2 p.m. from Roanoke First Baptist Church, with Dr. 
Douglas Turner 
officiating. Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Awbrey died Saturday, Feb. 13, in Roanoke.
   A native of Gurley (Madison County), Ala., Mrs. Awbrey was born Apr. 18, 
1911, daughter 
of the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sidney Hodges. She had lived in Huntsville 
before making her 
home in Roanoke and was a graduate of Maryville College, Maryville, Tenn. She 
was the wife 
of the late Mark Reuben Awbrey, a member of Roanoke First Baptist Church and 
a retired 
Roanoke city school teacher.
   Survivors include two sons, Mark Awbrey and Pat Awbrey, both of Roanoke, 
and three 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Steve Cole, John Schuessler, Jerry Cotney, Jimmy Baird, 
Gary Nelson, 
Norman McClendon, Dr. Sam Shelnutt and Jim Robinson. Serving as honorary 
pallbearers

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Tessie Heard Atkins, 95, of Wadley, Route 2,

   Mrs. Atkins died Friday, Feb. 12, at Randolph County Hospital after an 
extended illness.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Atkins was born Mar. 2, 1897, daughter of 
Elijah O. and 
Hasseltine Dollar Gray. She was a housewife and member of Forrester's Chapel 
Methodist 
Church. Her husband, Charlie Brasher Atkins Sr., and a son, Charles B. Atkins 
Jr., preceded 
her in death.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Norma Robinson; a sister, Mrs. Blondell 
Potts; and a 
brother, John Bryce Gray, all of Wadley; eight grandchildren; 19 great-
grandchildren; two 
great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Wallace Yeats

   (ANDERSON, S.C.) Charles Wallace Yeats, 63, of Anderson, S.C., died Friday, 
Feb. 12[, 
1993,] in Anderson Memorial Hospital.
   He was born in Bowdon, Georgia[,] July 9, 1929, son of the late Fred and 
Bertie Lee Jackson 
Yeats. Mr. Yeats was a member of Bowdon Baptist Church and Elks Lodge # 1206, 
was a 
veteran of the United States Air Force, served in the Korean Conflict, 
attended the University 
of Georgia and was a cotton broker with Allen/Berg Cotton Company, Memphis, 
Tenn.
   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, 
Martha Boggs Yeats.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Allison Yeats of Anderson, S.C.; [a] 
sister, Mrs. Billie 
Ann Hodges of Roanoke, Ala.; two brothers, Fred Jackson Yeats of Roanoke, and 
Bobby R. 
Yeats, [of] Temple, Ga.; and two nieces and two nephews.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 13, at 9 a.m. from the Chapel of 
Sullivan-King Mortuary 
with Rev. James T. Richardson officiating. Honorary pallbearers were members 
of Greenville 
Cotton Exchange. Interment services followed at 3:30 p.m. in Burwell Cemetery, 
Carrollton, 
Ga., with Rev. Hollis Chambers in charge of the graveside service.

   (WEDOWEE) Wilma A. Key, 74, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Saturday, Feb. 13,

   Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 15, at Wesley Chapel 
Christian Church, 
with Bro. Harry Cobb officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Key is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Burma Dean Moore of Lineville 
and Mrs. 
Jewel Hill of Woodland; three sons, Eldon Key of Newell[,] and Eldredge Key 
and Vernon 
Key of Wedowee; one sister, Mrs. Gracie Holmes of Lineville; eight 
grandchildren[;] and 
12 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Steve Key, Billy Sudduth, Stanley Taylor, Marty Nichols, 
Raymond 
Brown and Bart Barrontine.
   Mrs. Key was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was a 
homemaker and 
a member of the Beulah Land Senior Citizen Center. She was preceded in death 
by one son,

Shelia Carson Okrutny

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Shelia Carson Okrutny, 36, of Route 1, 
Wadley, were Friday, 
Feb. 19, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs. S. T. 
Janney, Steve 
Pilkington and Calvin Teal officiating. Burial was at Forrester's Chapel 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Okrutny died Tuesday, Feb. 16, at University Hospital in Birmingham as 
a result of 
injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Chambers County on Feb. 11.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Okrutny was born Feb. 6, 1957, 
daughter of 
Colbert Delmar and Dorothy Lela White Carson. A brother, Franklin Leroy 
Carson, preceded 
her in death.
   Survivors include her husband, Kerry D. Okrutny; a daughter, Mary E. 
Carson; a son, 
Richard E. Lashley; a granddaughter; and her three brothers, Gerson Carson of 
Carrollton, Ga., 
George Carson of Maplesville and Wyatt Carson of Alexander City; a sister, 
Mrs. Rebecca 
Clegg of Wadley; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Bill Clegg, James Clegg, Walter Okrutny and John Carson.

Lonzell Moody

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Lonzell Moody, 84, of Roanoke, who died 
Wednesday, 
Feb. 17, 1993, at his residence on South Street, were held Saturday, Feb. 20,

Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, Roanoke. The pastor, Rev. R. L. Heflin, 
officiated. Burial was 
in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Moody for many years was a self-employed plumber. Prior to that, he 
worked for 
W. A. Handley Manufacturing Co. He was a member of and held various offices in 
Mt. Pisgah 
Baptist Church. He was born in Roanoke on Feb. 2, 1909, son of Willie and 
Hester Moody.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Fannie Mae Moody of Roanoke; two 
daughters, Mrs. 
Tommie Lee Watts and Mrs. Beautie White of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. 
Carrie Cameron 
of Detroit, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
   Preceeding Mr. Moody in death were his first wife, Beautie Almond Moody, 
and three children, 
Lonzell Moody Jr.[,] and Lovie and Lovejoy Moody.

at his residence.
   Mr. Terry was a member of Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church.
   Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Bervina Philpott of Wedowee; and two 
aunts, Mrs. Ida Moss 
of Opelika and Mrs. Alma Foreman of Wedowee.
   Services for Mr. Terry were Sunday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. from Pine Flat 
Primitive Baptist Church, 
with Elder James Rowe and Elder Thomas Knight officiating. Interment was in 
the adjoining 
church cemetery.

   (LINEVILLE) Funeral services for Minnie H. Craven, 92, of Route 2, 
Lineville, were Saturday, 
Feb. 13, 1993, at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Clay County Funeral Home, with

officiating. Burial was in Clay County Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Craven died Thursday, Feb. 11, at Lineville Nursing Facility. She was 
a native of Randolph 
County but had lived in Clay County for the past 36 years. She was a homemaker 
and member of 
Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church in Randolph County.
   Mrs. Craven is survived by two sons, Pervis Craven of Marietta, Ga., and 
and [sic] Thearl 
Craven of Lineville; three daughters, Louise Estes of Valley, Dean Edwards of 
Roanoke and 
Lannie Farrow of Cragford; one sister, Myrthel Rogers of Anniston; one 
brother, O. D. Hill of 
Heflin; eight grandchildren[;] and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Gary Craven, Mike Craven, Kenneth Edwards, Eddie Farrow,

and Melvin Woodruff.

   (ASHVILLE) Funeral services for Howard Wellborn, 77, of Ashland were 
Saturday, Feb. 13,

   Mr. Wellborn died Thursday, Feb. 11, at his residence. He was a native of 
Randolph County 
who had lived most of his life in Mobile. He moved to Clay County years ago 
following his 
retirement from the water board of the City of Mobile. He was a member of 
Chandler Springs 
Baptist Church.
   Mr. Wellborn is survived by four brothers, Arthur Stannes Wellborn of 
Peachtree City, Ga., 
James Mark Wellborn of Roanoke, David C. Wellborn of Holiday, Fla., and Curtis 
Morgan 
Wellborn of Ashland.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for James Presley Muldrew, 63, of Roanoke were

   Mr. Muldrew died Wednesday, Feb. 17, at his residence.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Muldrew was born Dec. 7, 1929, son of Samuel 
G. and Ruth 
Sudduth Muldrew. He was a retired major with the U.S. Air Force, served during 
both the 
Korean and Vietnam Wars and had traveled over much of the country. Mr. Muldrew 
was 
Methodist by faith.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Macelia B. Muldrew of Roanoke; a son, 
James Kevin 
Muldrew of Orlando, Fla.; a granddaughter, Kayla Ann Muldrew; and two 
brothers, Thomas 
Lee Muldrew of Middleton, Ga., and Samuel G. Muldrew Jr. of Denison, Texas.
   Pallbearers were Col. Grady H. Carroll, Lt. Col. John Sudduth, Terry B. 
Sudduth, Carles J.

Church, with

   Mr. May is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Emily Hendrix of Valley; one son, 
Rex May of 
Wedowee; and three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Delmar Green, Rayford Edmondson, Willis Smith, W. C. Pate, 
Bobby Yates 
and Harold Holmes.
   Mr. May was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, a veteran of 
World War II, 
a farmer and a member of Midway United Methodist Church. He was also a member 
of the 
American Legion.

   (PITTSBURGH, Pa.) On Monday, Jan. 25, 1993, Ella Mary Holliday, 73, died in 
Pittsburgh, Pa.
   She was born in Stroud, Ala., on Feb. 14, 1919, to the late Freeman and 
Mary Jane Drake. 
During her early life, she was a member of Canaan Baptist Church.
   Survivors include five children, Doc Holliday, Cathy Scott, Vivian Coates, 
Joyce Richards 
and Edwin Holliday [no locations given]; two brothers, Everette Drake of 
Pittsburgh and 
Harmon Drake of Atlanta; one sister, Denna Higgins of Detroit, Mich.; 16 
grandchildren; 
20 great-grandchildren[;] and a host of other relatives and friends.
   Arrangements were by Odell Robinson Jr. of Pittsburgh. Interment was at 
Restland 
Memorial Cemetery on Thursday, Jan. 28.
