Billy Pemberton officiating. Burial followed at Cedarwood Cemetery. Mr. Cole died Saturday, July 29, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika. Survivors include his father, George Cole of Roanoke; two sisters, Patricia Cole of Roanoke and Elizabeth Winburn of Niceville, Fla.; one brother, Richard Cole of Gainesville, Ga.; and four nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were David Rice, Harold Elliott, Gerald Knight, Peter Knight, Scott Winburn and LeRoy Cofield. Mr. Cole was born July 20, 1947, son of George and Olive Moore Cole. He was a graduate of Auburn University, a member of Maplewood Baptist Church, and had been employed as an electrical engineer with Alabama Power. Mr. Cole retired on disability in his late 30s. He was active in all sports during his high school years at Handley. A native of Randolph County, Mr. Brown was the son of the late Rufus Earl Brown and the late Lura Johnson Brown. He lived in LaGrange most of his life, was retired from Signal Knitting and owned and operated Water Wheel Antiques in LaGrange, and was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Melody Macon of Gainesville, Ga., and Karol Brown of Hogansville, Ga.; one son, Randall Brown of LaGrange; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Baker was born Sept. 17, 1920, in Roanoke and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Baker was a veteran of World War II, serving in Italy and North Africa. He was an employee of Alabama Power Company for several years, and when his father died he took over his shoe sales and repair business. For 40 years he operated Baker's Shoe Shop until his retirement. Mr. Baker was a faithful member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church. He was very devoted to his family and grandchildren. Following his retirement, he enjoyed watching baseball, traveling and fellowship with friends. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Carter and Myrtice Chewning Baker; and his first wife, Mae Harris Baker. Born Jan. 19, 1930, to the late Jessie and Oda Lucas Pearl, he was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church; retired from Fields Packing where he worked for 39 years; was an army veteran of the Korean War earning the Purple Heart; and was a member of AMVETS, DAV, and a life member of the VFW. Mr. Pearl enjoyed gardening, his Model T Ford, NASCAR, watching "Wheel of Fortune;" and spending time with his grandchildren. She was active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Georgia Cattlemen's Association and was a past president of the Cow Belles. She served on numerous boards for Heard County, both governmental and the community at large. Mrs. Williams was a gracious hostess and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. She was a talented artist and an avid gardener who loved sharing her passions with others. Sgt. 1st Class Dwayne Houston of Owings Mills, Md., died Monday, Aug. 21, 2006, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Sgt. 1st Class Houston, born Aug. 30, 1963, in Troup County, Ga., was the son and eighth child of Mrs. Mary Alice Houston of LaGrange, Ga., and the late Mr. Seyphous Houston. He was a 1981 graduate of Troup High School and immediately joined the army after graduation. According to statements by his commanding officer, "Sgt. 1st Class Houston exemplified the army values during his career and set a sterling example for all leaders to follow prior to his untimely death on 21 August 2006. His actions have had a lasting, positive effect on unit training and soldier readiness throughout the army, army reserve and national guard." In addition to his loving and devoted mother, he leaves to cherish his memories, a daughter, Brittany Houston of Fairfax, Va.; stepdaughter, Aja Shamburger and her daughter; sisters, Josephine Tucker, Drusilla Maddox and Marilyn Wilson of LaGrange, Gertrude Herring of San Antonio, Texas, and Jacqueline Houston of Americus, Ga.; brothers, Donald Houston of LaGrange and retired Staff Sgt.
