OBITUARIES:

John Hardy Hendon

   (ROANOKE) Services for John Hardy Hendon, 83, of Roanoke were Monday, July 
2, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Roanoke First Baptist Church, with Dr. Phil Russell 
officiating.
   Mr. Hendon died Saturday, June 30, at Traylor Nursing Home.
   Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sudduth Hendon of Roanoke; one son, 
Tommy Hendon of Roanoke; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He 
was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Bernice Irene Hardy Hendon; a 
daughter, Elizabeth Hendon May; and a sister, Willie Frank Tompkins.
   Pallbearers were Byron Morrison, Frank Phillips, Wyner Phillips, Bill 
Foster, Spec Bonner and Tommy Cato.
   Mr. Hendon was born Sept. 28, 1923. He was a member and deacon of Roanoke 
First Baptist Church, sales clerk for Phillips Brothers Hardware, and served 13 
years as Randolph County's Circuit Clerk. He was a charter member and past 
president of Roanoke Kiwanis Club and had 60 years of continuous membership 
with the American Legion. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Harley Nelson Carson Boyd

   (WEDOWEE) Visitation for Harley Nelson Carson Boyd, 11, of Wedowee, was 
Monday, July 2, 2007, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home. Arrangements 
for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
   Harley died Saturday, June 30, in Clay County.
   Harley is survived by his parents, Thad and Tonya Boyd of Wedowee; 
grandparents, James and Sharon Mitchell, Judy Cofield, Carson and Ann Traylor 
and Faye Boyd, all of Roanoke; one sister, Megan Boyd of Wedowee; and one 
brother, Randall Boyd of Wedowee.
   Harley was born Sept. 3, 1996, and was a fourth-grade student at Wedowee 
Middle School. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Elton Boyd.

Ernie Joseph Joey' Turley

   (HEFLIN) Services for Ernie Joseph Joey Turley, 23, of Heflin were at 11 
a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2007, at Dryden Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. 
Benji Turley and Rob Turley officiating. Burial followed at Antioch Baptist 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Turley died Wednesday, June 27.
   Survivors include his wife, Robbie Denise Turley of Heflin; mother, Lydia 
Yvonne Key of Eastaboga; father, Virgil (wife, Kimberly) Turley of Heflin; 
daughter, Haleigh Lucretia Turley of Heflin; son, Joseph Ethan Turley of 
Heflin; three sisters, Danielle Turley of Weaver, Robin Turley and Rhonda 
Turley, both of Ashland; two brothers, Dustin Key of Lincoln and Jarrod Moates, 
of Eastaboga; grandparents, Emily Surrett and David Surett, both of Eastaboga, 
Diane Turley and Robert Turley, both of Heflin; great-grandmother, Lorene 
Surrett, of Anniston. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Lydia 
and Clarence Tucker, Suzy Turley and Steve Daniel Surrett, and a grandparent, 
Ernie Ella Turley.
   Pallbearers will be Jordan Gallahar, Anthony Surrett, Jamison Shelton, 
Jeremy Martin, Josh Brown, Ethan Norton, Bobby Turley and Michael Mitchell. 
Honorary pallbearers are employees of Burford's Tree Service.
   Mr. Turley was a lifelong resident of Cleburne County. He attended Cleburne 
County High School and was employed by Burford's Tree Service. He was a loving 
father, husband and son.

Erma Jean Carter Wilson

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Erma Jean Carter Wilson, 75, of Wedowee were Monday, 
July 2, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. 
Cloyse Johnson and the Rev. Stanley Yarbrough officiating. Burial was at 
Noonday Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Wilson died Saturday, June 30, at her residence. Survivors include her 
husband, Robert Wilson of Wedowee; a daughter, Peggy Hill of Wedowee; two 
grandchildren; two sisters, Sara Stewart of Oxford and Mary Nell Cofield of 
Graham; and one brother, Joe Carter of Trussville.
   Pallbearers were Ben Bailey, Adam White, Larry Wilson, Charles Fincher, 
Ronald Holloway, Wendell Parmer, Joey Carter and Dennis Benefield. Honorary 
pallbearers were Hobart McManus, Eugene Brown, Bob Fincher, Guy Benefield Jr. 
and Jack Shelton.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Wilson was born April 1, 1932, daughter of 
Grady and Nancy Ella Holmes Carter. She was a member of Bear Creek United 
Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin 
brother, Earnest Carter.

Joshua Scott Dempsey

   (OXFORD) Services for Joshua Scott Dempsey, 31, of Oxford were Saturday, 
June 30, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Smyrna Baptist Church in Newell with the Rev. 
Keith Rivers officiating and interment followed at the church cemetery.
   Mr. Dempsey died June 27, 2007 at Regional Medical Center.
   Mr. Dempsey was a native of Calhoun County and lived in Oxford all of his 
life. He was a graduate of Oxford High School and a member of Meadowbrook 
Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
   Mr. Dempsey was preceded in death by his son, Tucker Joe Dempsey, and 
grandparents, Sammy and Bettye Dempsey. Mr. Dempsey is survived by his son, 
Tanner Dempsey of Alexandria; his parents, Larry and Gail Dempsey of Oxford; 
his sister, Melissa Steward of Wellington; and grandparents, Billy and Clovis 
McCord of Oxford.
  Pallbearers will be Todd Radney, Greg Hughes, Mark Corbett, Mike Corbett, 
Matt Whitley and Phillip Whatley. Honorary pallbearers will be Nathan Holmes 
and Brandon Skinner.

Myrtis Brown Mitchell

   (ROANOKE) Services for Myrtis Brown Mitchell, 92, of Roanoke were Thursday, 
June 28, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. J.D. 
Bearden and the Rev. Richard Farrow officiating. Burial followed at Mount 
Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Mitchell died Tuesday, June 26, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include five daughters, Margaret Weathers of Forest Park, Ga., and 
Kathryn Vinson, Sara Knight, Joyce Denham and Barbara McDow of Roanoke; 19 
grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were her grandsons.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Mitchell was born on March 3, 1915, daughter 
of Charlie and Callie Holloway Brown. She was a member of High Pine Baptist 
Church and had been employed as a seamstress. She was preceded in death by her 
husband, James P. Mitchell; her parents; two children; four grandchildren; and 
two great-grandchildren.

Ola Tomlin Holderfield

   (LANETT) Ola Tomlin Holderfield, 92, of Lanett died Wednesday, June 27, 
2007, at George H. Lanier Nursing Home, Valley.
   Graveside services were Saturday, June 30, at 11 a.m. EDT at Resthaven 
Memorial Gardens with the Revs. Gene Webb and Rusty Thomaston officiating.
   Mrs. Holderfield is survived by her daughter, Margaret Cook of Lanett; four 
granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Holderfield was born April 26, 1915, in Lineville, the daughter of the 
late Grover Cleveland and Emma Lynn Upchurch Tomlin Sr. She attended Handley 
High School in Roanoke and was retired from West Point Pepperell's Lanett Mill 
in 1980 with 23 years of service. Mrs. Holderfield was a member of First 
Baptist Church of Lanett for more than 65 years. She belonged to the Loyalty 
Sunday School Class and Jolly Seniors. Mrs. Holderfield loved sewing and made 
many clothes for her family. She enjoyed teaching her grandchildren and great-
grandchildren to cook, sew and read. She was a big fan of Alabama football and 
especially the Million Dollar Band.
   Awaiting Mrs. Holderfield's homecoming were her husband of 44 years, Johnnie 
Earl Holderfield; her twin sister, Lola Tomlin; her older sister, Nellie Mae 
Tomlin Lester; and her younger brother, Grover Cleveland Tomlin Jr., who 
preceded her in death.

Gloria Dean Thompson

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Gloria Dean Thompson of Franklin, Ga., died Monday, June 25, 
2007, at Southern Regional Medical Center in Atlanta.
   Mrs. Thompson, a native of Heard County, Ga., was born Aug. 22, 1963, and 
was the daughter of the late Harves Daniel and Ora Lee Person. She was a 1981 
graduate of Heard High School and a member of Mount Zion Community Church.
   Survivors include her devoted husband, Greg Thompson of Franklin; 
stepdaughter, Brittany Dean; sisters, Lizzie and Auburn Brewer of Franklin and 
Ethel Kilby, Louella Person and Lois Person, all of Atlanta; brothers, Eddie 
Person and Felton Person of Franklin and Charlie Daniel of Roanoke; three 
aunts; in-laws; nieces, nephews and special friends. In addition to her 
parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Helton Person.
   The funeral service was Friday, June 29, at 2:30 p.m. at Mount Zion 
Community Church in Franklin. The Rev. Ruben Simson officiated. Burial was in 
the Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery.

Grady Louise Baldwin Coleman

   (VALLEY) Mrs. Grady Louise Baldwin Coleman, 87, of Valley died Wednesday, 
June 27, 2007, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Services were Friday, June 29, at 2 p.m. EDT at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley, with the Rev. Steve York officiating. Burial 
followed at Fairfax Cemetery.
   Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, J. Arthur 
Coleman.   She is survived by two daughters, Martha Elder of Highland Village, 
Texas, and Sandra Glover of West Point, Ga.; four grandchildren; five great-
grandchildren; a sister, Marie May of Valley; and several nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Coleman was a native of Randolph County, the daughter of the late Rufus 
and Lola Mickle Baldwin of the Broughton Community. She was an employee of 
Fairfax Mill for many years. In 1957 she and her husband established Coleman's 
Grocery in Fairfax, which they owned until 1984. Upon retirement, Mrs. Coleman 
enjoyed gardening and her grandchildren.

Mary M. Hanners

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mary M. Hanners, 81, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday, June 
26, 2007, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   Mrs. Hanners was born Jan. 28, 1926 in Wedowee, daughter of the late Luther 
Young and Fannie Holloway Young. She had lived in LaGrange until 1953 and 
returned to LaGrange in 1987 and was a member of East Vernon Baptist Church. 
Mrs. Harmers was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bo Hanners.
   Survivors include her son, Angelo Hanners of LaGrange; a brother, Luther 
Young of Ft. Worth, Texas; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and 
several great-great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. EDT Thursday, June 28, at Striffler-Hamby 
Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel, with the Revs. Jimmy McMillian and Bobby Bozeman 
officiating. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Baptist 
Tabernacle, Building Fund, 849 S. Davis Rd., LaGrange, GA 30240 in memory of 
Mrs. Hanners.

Lee Paris

   (HUNTSVILLE) Lee Paris, 89, of Huntsville died Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at 
Cloverdale Manor in Scottsboro.
   Mr. Paris was born in Dallas, Ga., on Sept. 17, 1917. He was a charter 
member of Monte Sano Baptist Church and was a World War II veteran of the Army 
Air Corp. He worked for the U.S. government for 43 years, most of which was at 
Redstone Arsenal as a contracting officer in Building 4488.
   He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Mitchell Paris; three sons, Don 
Mitchell Paris of Wedowee, Lee Winston Paris of Woodville and Lindsay Matthew 
Paris of Huntsville; one brother, Neal Paris of Breman, Ga.; one sister, Mary 
Willene Harley of Breman; and five grandsons. He was preceded in death by his 
parents, Floyd and Emma Paris, and one brother, James Wilbur Paris.
   Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at Monte Sano Baptist 
Church with Bro. Bob Mayberry officiating.

   (SALEM) Services for Travis James Harris, 20, of Salem were Friday, June 29, 
2007, at 2 p.m. at Iduma Congregational Methodist Church, Wedowee, with the

Baptist Church Cemetery, Wedowee.
   Mr. Harris died Tuesday, June 26, at Columbus Medical Center.
   Survivors include his parents, Travis Neil and Jodi Diane Harris of Salem; 
one sister, Kristian Harris of Salem; his paternal grandfather, James C. Harris 
of Arkansas; maternal grandparents, Farrel and Edna Boutwell of Phenix City; 
and his step-grandfather, Ben Kacer of Phenix City.
  He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Helen Clifton Harris and great-
grandparents Lillie and Joe Clifton.
   Pallbearers were Jake Harris, Barry Harris, Josh Harris, Tim Clifton, 
Anthony Clifton and Rick Gentle.
   Mr. Harris was born July 21, 1986, son of Travis Neil and Jodi D. Boutwell 
Harris. He had been employed as a carpenter with Harris Construction.

Kathryn Lane Bolding

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Kathryn Lane Bolding, 77, of Carrollton, Ga., formerly of 
Ellijay, Ga., died June 23, 2007.
   She was born Feb. 25, 1930, in Randolph County, Ala., to the late Whittlin 
S. Lane and Irene Dannielly Lane. Ms. Bolding worked for the Corps of Engineers 
at Dobbins AFB in Marietta, Ga., and was a teacher at Murray County High School 
for 10 years before she retired. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church 
in Ellijay. She was a graduate of North Georgia University and received her 
master's degree in dehavioral disorders from the University of West Georgia.
   Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Lane Bolding; 
a sister, Rebecca L. Norfleet; and a brother, William S. Lane.
   Survivors include her sons, Charles D. Bolding of Carrollton and Alan W. 
Bolding of Douglasville, Ga.; a daughter, Karen B. Stewart of Carrollton; five 
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Graveside services were conducted June 26 at 11 a.m. at West Georgia 
Memorial Park in Carrollton with the Rev. J.C. Cook officiating. Music was 
rendered by Rethal Martin.

Dr. James Allen Graham

   (ROANOKE) Services for Dr. James Allen Graham, 87, of Roanoke will be held 
Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. 
Roger Jones and Hugh Vines officiating.
   Dr. Graham will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services 
beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
   Dr. Graham died July 1 at Roanoke Healthcare Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary Stuart Graham of Roanoke; two sisters, 
Wylodene Bates and Juliet Peterson, both of Montgomery; and one brother, 
Charles B. Graham of Atlanta.
   Pallbearers will be Ralph Davis, Tommy Burke, Joe Andrew, Richard Holland, 
Ted Noles and Jimmy Gay. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Lebanon 
Christian Church.
   The family will accept flowers or donations to Lebanon Christian Church, 
Roanoke First United Methodist Church or a charity of one's choice. 
   Dr. Graham was born June 10, 1920, son of John Robert and Dovie Odessa 
Lester Graham. He was a World War II Army veteran, had been self-employed as a 
chiropractor in Meridian, Miss., and was a member of Lebanon Christian Church. 
He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Pauline Wahn, Pearl 
Hall, Eva Morris and Eltis Cummins.

Zachary Joseph Estes-Shirah (infant)

   (ROANOKE) Services for infant Zachary Joseph Estes-Shirah were Saturday, 
July 7, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel in Lineville with Dr. 
Tharel Shirah officiating. Burial followed in Wadley City Cemetery.
   Zachary died Wednesday, July 4, at Randolph Medical Center.
   He is survived by his parents, Stephanie Estes and Mitchell Shirah of 
Roanoke; one sister, Laine Shirah; three brothers, Brody Estes-Shirah, Carey 
Shirah and Gage Estes of Roanoke; grandparents, Pauline Shirah of Sylacauga, 
Sharon Moore of Lineville and Larry Estes of Wadley; a great-grandmother, 
Margaret Moore of Lineville; a great-great-grandmother, Eunice Jordan of 
Lineville; an aunt; and two uncles. He was preceded in death by his 
grandfather, Murry Shirah; grandmother, Nancy Estes; and great-grandfather,

   Mrs. Carson died Sunday, July 8, at her home.

grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Leslie Weaver, Ray Mulkey, Marion Carson, Tim Carson,

   Mrs. Carson was born Jan. 2, 1927, daughter of J.W. and Emma Dell Briskey 
Woodall. She was a member of North Main Congregational Christian Church and a 
homemaker. Mrs. Carson was preceded in death by her parents.

   (ROANOKE) Services for James Albert Kirby, 64, of Roanoke, were Sunday, July

   Mr. Kirby died Saturday, July 7, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Linda Boyd Kirby of Roanoke; two daughters, 
Sondra Reed of Huntsville and Cindy Strain of Woodland; his mother, Catherine 
Kirby of Roanoke; two brothers, Rev. Bobby Kirby and Jerrell Wayne Kirby, both 
of Roanoke; and five grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Randall Boyd, Waymon Taft, Ralph Wilder, Derrell Kirby, 
Thomas Rollins and Ricky Whaley.
   Mr. Kirby was born April 18, 1943, son of Albertus and Catherine Sewell 
Kirby. He was of the Baptist faith, a Class A mechanic for Transco, and had 
served in the United States Air Force. Mr. Kirby is preceded in death by his 
father.

Jossie Naomie Henderson

   (ROANOKE) Jossie Naomie Chang Henderson, 72, of Roanoke died Saturday, 
June 30, 2007, at her residence.
   A native of Chambers County, she was born June 14, 1935. She was a member of 
Wehadkee Baptist Church, Roanoke.
   Survivors include three sons, Charlie Goss, Michael Goss and Rudolph Goss of 
Roanoke; two sisters, Annie Will Clark of Louisville, Ky., and Emma Jean Huey 
of Los Angeles, Calif.; three grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, 
cousins and other relatives and friends.
   Services were at Wehadkee Baptist Church on Friday, July 6, at 2 p.m., with 
the Revs. Elijah Jackson and Calvin Trammell officiating. Burial was in the 
church cemetery.

   (GRAHAM) Services for Rosa Bell Haynes Dennis, 75, of Graham were at 11 a.m.

Revs. Robert Doddridge, Loyal Pinkard and Ronnie Lesley officiating. Ronnie 
Lesley and wife Debbie provided special music. Burial followed at Christiana 
Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Dennis died Wednesday at her residence.
   Survivors include one daughter, Faye Stephens of Carrollton, Ga.; four sons, 
Bobby Dennis of Calhoun, Ga., Earl Dennis of Ranburne, Jackie Dennis of 
Grantville, Ga., and Randy Dennis of Graham; nine grandchildren; nine great-
grandchildren; one sister, Sally Argo of Blue Mountain; four brothers, Chester 
Haynes and Edward Haynes of Anniston, William Haynes of Birmingham, and Vernon 
Haynes of Wedowee.
   Pallbearers were Randy Dennis, Bobby Dennis, Jackie Dennis, Earl Dennis, 
Wade Stephens and Quinton Stephens. Honorary pallbearer will be James Stephens.
   Mrs. Dennis was a native of Anniston and a lifelong resident of Graham. She 
was a member of the former Unity Church of God in Bowdon, Ga., for 43 years. 
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1959, Hollis W. Dennis, one great-
grandchild, three sisters, four brothers, and her parents.

   (ANNISTON) Services for Johnie Wesley Ward, 64, of Anniston were Friday, 
July 6, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Napoleon Church of Christ, with Bro. Terry Langley 
officiating. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Ward died Thursday, June 28, in Merida, Mexico.
   Survivors include three sons, John Fareed of Winter Park, Fla., Eric Ward of 
Dalton, Ga., and David Ward of Rome, Ga.; one sister, Janie Cobb of Roanoke; 
and six grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Bill Ward, Lee Cobb, Brian Ward, Tim Wilson, Lance Burks, 
Mike Mudd and Kevin Potts.
   Mr. Ward was born July 9, 1942, son of William Terrell and Sara Lois Wilson 
Ward. He had been employed as a educator with Valley Point Elementary in

   (RANBURNE) Mr. Terry Oswald Hanson, 55, of County Road 10, Ranburne, died 
Sunday, July 1, 2007, in Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, Ga.
   He was born in Carroll County, Ga., Aug. 11, 1951, the son of Emmett Oswald 
and Lela Mae Robinson Hanson. He was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his parents, Emmett Oswald and Lela Mae Robinson Hanson of 
Ranburne; two sons, Richard Oswald Hanson of Conyers, Ga., and Anthony Hanson 
of Atlanta; three daughters, Mitzi Michelle Hanson Wright and Melanie Dawn 
Hanson Reaves of Anniston and Jessica Hanson of Conyers; six grandchildren; two 
sisters, Julia Ann Hanson of Ranburne and Debra Sherry Hanson Bowen of Woodland.

   (BUCHANAN, Ga.) Gladys Brazeal Bell, 88, of Buchanan, Ga., died July 2, 2007.
   Mrs. Bell was born in Heard County, Ga., on Feb. 25, 1919, to the late John 
Brazeal and the late Odessa Lancaster Bell. She was a retired mill worker.
   Survivors include a daughter, Doris Holloway of Buchanan; sons, Amon E. Bell 
of Carrollton, Ga., Wayne H. Bell of Cedartown, Ga., and Steve R. Bell of West 
Point, Ga.; a sister, Jean Adcock of Roanoke; a brother, Jack Brazeal of 
Franklin, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-
grandchildren and a number of other relatives. Besides her parents, she was 
preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Bell.
   Funeral services were Wednesday, July 4, at 10 a.m. from the Buchanan United 
Methodist Church with the Rev. Anthony Puckett and Danny Hutcheson officiating.

James Winston Brazell Sr.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) James Winston Brazell Sr., 74, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday 
morning; June 30, 2007, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
   Mr. Brazell was a Camden County, Ga., native, born Oct. 11, 1932, in 
Kingsland, the youngest son of the late Dewey and Annie Mae Anderson Brazell. 
Mr. Brazell was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 
1952 until 1956. After military service, Mr. Brazell worked for the Goodyear 
Tire Corporation throughout Florida for many years. He opened his first Big 
Chic Restaurant in Roanoke and later in LaGrange, where he made his residence 
for more than 20 years. The family expressed how they all shared his joys and 
felt his pain, and now must learn to treasure his peace.
   Mr. Brazell is survived by his wife, Arlene Ammons Brazell of LaGrange, the 
love of his life for 53 years; his children, Angie Evans of Jupiter, Fla., 
Gloria Thomas of Greenwood, S.C., and James Winston Brazell Jr. of LaGrange; 
eight grandchildren; and his six great-grandchildren.
  Memorial services were held at Callaway Park Church at 2 p.m. EDT on

   (ROOPVILLE, Ga.) Clarence Robert C.R. Harrison, retired U.S. Army master 
sergeant, 81, of Old Hwy. 27, Roopville, Ga., died Tuesday, July 3, 2007.
   He was born Feb. 4, 1926, in Troup County, Ga., to the late Susie Alma 
Tucker Harrison and Charlie Harrison. Mr. Harrison enjoyed a 31-year career 
with the U.S. Army and following retirement began an 18-year career with the 
Southwire Company. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Loette Harrison; two daughters, Donna Ford and 
Sherry Harrison of Roopville; three sons, Don Harrison of Franklin, Ga., Billy 
Harrison of Atlanta and Larry Harrison of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Inez 
Foster of Opelika; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
   Services were Friday, July 6, at 2 p.m. at Martin & Hightower Heritage

   Mrs. Dye died Monday, July 2, at her home.

sisters, Annie Jim Waters and Joan Craig of Newell; her brother, Leroy Spradlin 
of Wedowee; nine nephews and five nieces. She is preceded in death by a 
brother, Travis Curtis T.C. Spradlin.

Joey Whaley, Justin Whaley, Jeffery Spradlin and Ryan Spradlin. Honorary

   Mrs. Dye was born Dec. 14, 1947, in Randolph County to the late Curtis and 
Audrey Spradlin of Newell. She attended Woodland High School, was a member of 
Providence Baptist Church, and had worked as a supervisor in the clothing 
industry in Bowdon, Ga., and Franklin, Ga. She will be remembered as a loving 
and generous wife, mother, sister and as a grandmother who adored her 
grandchildren.

Ben William Huddleston

   (VALLEY) Ben William Huddleston, 73, of Valley died Saturday. June 30, 2007, 
after a brief illness. He was at his residence, and his family was with him.
  Mr. Huddleston was married to Nettie Bobbie Rollins for 50 years. They had 
just celebrated their 50th anniversary on April 3. He was born in Randolph 
County in 1934 to Zara Monroe Huddleston and Sarah Ann Rollins and was of the 
Baptist faith. Mr. Huddleston was self-employed in the logging business for 
more than 50 years. After retiring, he enjoyed gardening and watching his 
grandchildren play.
   He is survived by his wife; one son, Vernon Michael Huddleston of Valley; 
two daughters, Sharon Swader of LaGrange, Ga., and Voncille Marylyn Cobb of 
Valley; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, A.D. 
Huddleston of Franklin, Ga., and Troy Huddleston of Valley; and two sisters, 
Ida Turner of Augusta, Ga., and Clara Mae Cantrell of Lanett. He was preceded 
in death by his parents; two sisters, Annie Lou Baker and Hattie Lee 
Huddleston; and a brother, Roy Huddleston.
   Services were at Prospect Methodist Church in Randolph County on Monday,

   (LINEVILLE) Services for Johnny W. Junior East Jr., 82, of Lineville will

   Mr. East died Sunday, July 15, at his residence.
   He was a native and life-long resident of Clay County. He was a World War II

worked at ACE Manufacturing Company. He was a member of New Fellowship Baptist 
Church and served as a Sunday school teacher for 38 years and a deacon for 45 
years.
   He is survived by his wife, Ina Lee East of Lineville; two daughters, Kathy 
Lee East of McDonough, Ga., and Janice Kay Hill, of Edmond, Okla.; one son, 
Dennis Ray East of Lineville; one sister, Lena Bell Graben of Roanoke; three 
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was 
preceded in death by one sister, Lenora Harris; one grandchild, David East; and 
one great-grandchild, Trey Young.

   Mr. Robinson was born July 11, 1931, in Carroll County, Ga., to the late 
Ruth McIntyre Robinson and Melvin Robinson. He was a television repairman 
having worked for Kenmore Electronics. He also enjoyed fishing and was member 
of Indian Creek Baptist Church. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death 
by his brothers, Johnny Melvin Robinson and Wendell Steve Robinson; and a 
granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Whitman.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary Laster Robinson; a daughter, Patricia 
Whitman of Lineville; a sister, Jackie Ethridge of Waycross, Ga.; two 
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Robinson was born July 31, 1920, in Cleburne County, to the late William 
Henry and Viola Abercrombie Robinson. Having lived in Carroll County for 60 
years, he was a member of Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church.
   In addition to his parents, Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by a brother, 
Elmer Robinson; a sister, Vivian Pollard and a granddaughter, Amy Robinson.
   Survivors include his wife, Lucille Wilson Robinson; a son, Dale Robinson of 
Carrollton, Ga.; son, David Robinson of Bowdon; two daughters, Peggy Hewitt of 
Pine Hill and Janie Meadows of Newell; three grandsons; one granddaughter; and 
one great-granddaughter.
   Services for Mr. Robinson will be Thursday, July 12, at 2 p.m. in the chapel

   (VALDOSTA, Ga.) Jeff J.F. Bailey of Valdosta, Ga., died Friday, July 13, 
2007, after a short illness.
   Born to the late T.J. and Ruby South Bailey in Randolph County and formerly 
of Roanoke, he lived in the Valdosta area for the past 54 years. Mr. Bailey and 
his son, Franklin, operated Homes by Bailey for the past 23 years. He was very 
active with and past president of the Georgia Bible Camp and was a member of 
Forrest Park Church of Christ.
   Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Rubye Bailey of Valdosta; a 
daughter, Urenda Driver of Tallahassee, Fla.; a son, Franklin Bailey of 
Valdosta; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold 
Bailey of Woodland; a sister, Julie Wilson of LaGrange, Ga.; and numerous 
nieces and nephews. Mr. Bailey is preceded in death by several brothers and

   A Randolph County native, Ms. Hester was born Sept. 12, 1986, daughter of 
Don Keith and Babette Botsford Hester. She was a member of Big Springs Baptist 
Church and had been employed as a sales clerk with Wal-Mart.

Clarice Wright Brookshire

   (ROANOKE) Services for Clarice Wright Brookshire, 92, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Ken May and the Rev. Wes Kinsey officiating. Burial will follow in 
Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Brookshire died Sunday, July 22, at Traylor Nursing Home.
   Survivors include one daughter, Anna Claire Brookshire of Bradenton, Fla.; 
one brother, J.W. Wright of Homewood; and several nieces and nephews.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Roanoke Christian 
Church or Roanoke Pilot Club.
   Mrs. Brookshire was born Nov. 14, 1914, daughter of John and Doney Wesley 
Wright.   She had been employed as a clerk for City Pharmacy, was a member of 
Roanoke Christian Church, and a long-time member of the Roanoke Pilot Club. 
Mrs. Brookshire moved to Roanoke in 1959 from Roanoke Rapids, N.C. She was 
preceded in death by her parents, John and Doney Wright; her husband, Jones 
Branson Brookshire; and two sons, Richard Brookshire and Roger Brookshire.

Mary Stuart Graham

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mary Stuart Graham, 85, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, 
July 25, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Roanoke First United Methodist Church, with the 
Rev. Steve Baccus officiating. Burial will follow at Big Springs Baptist Church 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Graham died Sunday, July 22, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include one brother-in-law, Charles Graham of Atlanta; two sisters-
in-law, Wylodene Bates and Juliet Peterson of Montgomery; and a host of cousins.

   Mrs. Graham was born Nov 6, 1921, daughter of Mark and Mary Huff Stuart. She 
was a junior high teacher for 41 years, 25 of those years in York, Ala. She was 
a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church, the Magazine Club and Crape 
Myrtle Garden Club. Mrs. Graham was preceded in death by her parents and her 
husband, Dr. James Allen Graham.

Mamie Langley Keel

   (WOODLAND) Services for Mamie Langley Keel, 92, of Woodland were Tuesday, 
July 24, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Napoleon Church of Christ, with Bro. Jeff Thompson 
officiating. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Keel died Sunday, July 22, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. Keel is survived by one daughter, Wylene Cofield of Woodland; one 
granddaughter, Belinda McCormick of Woodland; and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Chris Yates, Dustin McCormick, Trent Almond, Greg Almond, 
Tommy Martin and Noah P. Langley.
   Mrs. Keel was born April 16, 1915, daughter of H.L. and Nora Bowen Langley. 
She was a member of Napoleon Church of Christ, had been a seamstress at Handley 
Mills, and a teacher at the Napoleon Grammar School. Mrs. Keel is preceded in 
death by her husband, Carl Keel; three brothers; six sisters and five 
grandchildren.

Effie Elizabeth Gay Birdsong

   (ROANOKE) Services for Effie Elizabeth Gay Birdsong, 96, of Roanoke were

at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Birdsong died Thursday, July 19, at Roanoke Health Care.
   Survivors include three daughters, Frances Smith of Roopville, Ga., and 
Betty Pool and Jean Heard of Roanoke; one brother, Bill Gay of Ranburne; nine 
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Birdsong was born March 21, 1911, daughter of John Gilbert and Martha 
Custis Sledge Gay. She had been employed at Handley Mills and was a member of 
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her 
husband, Troy Birdsong.
   Pallbearers were Dennis Heard, Wayne Dobbs, Gary Smith, Michael Smith, Roy 
Gaines and Troy Gaines.

   (HUGULEY) Gertrude Owen Gray, 87, of Huguley died Friday, July 20, 2007, at 
Lanier Nursing Home in Valley.
   Services for Mrs. Gray were Sunday, July 22, at 3 p.m. EDT at Sunset Heights 
Baptist Church with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
   Mrs. Gray is survived by her daughter, Linda Lashley of Opelika; a son, Owen 
Gray of Lanett; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Charlie Fred Gray; her sister, Jeanette Potts; and her brothers, Bill 
Owen, Calvin Owen, Pete Owen and Jackie Owen.
   Mrs. Gray enjoyed working with flowers, cooking and visiting shut-ins.

   Mrs.[Miss] Nolen died Thursday, July 19, at Roanoke Health Care.
   Survivors include two sisters, Grace Philpott of Wisconsin and Vena 
Ledbetter of Palmetto, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Eris Poore Cottle, 85, of Roanoke were Thursday, July

   Mrs. Cottle died Tuesday, July 17, at Roanoke Health Care.

Doris J. Davis

   (ROANOKE) Doris J. Davis, 87, of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 21, 2007, at 
Randolph Medical Center.
   Services will be Friday, July 27, at 1 p.m. at Faith, Hope and Charity 
Baptist Church, with Pastor Veresia Houston and the Revs. Gilbert Staples and 
Jesse Bradshaw officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Baptist Church 
Cemetery, Bacon Level.
   Survivors include her husband, James Wright of Roanoke; three stepsons, 
Chester Bernard Wright, Dwaine Wright, and Kenneth Wright of Lanett; a 
stepdaughter, Gretta Wright of LaGrange, Ga.; five sisters-in-law, 4 brothers-
in-law, several special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a 
sister, Frances Strong; and three brothers, Jesse Freeman, James Freeman and 
Herman Strong.
   Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service from 10 a.m. until 
6 p.m. on Thursday.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.

Brenda F. Smith

   (ROANOKE) Brenda F. Smith, 52, of Roanoke, died Monday, July 24, 2007, at 
Randolph Medical Center.
   Services will be at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, LaFayette on 
Thursday, July 26, at 1 p.m. (CST), with the Rev. Earnest Parham officiating. 
Interment will be at Skyview Cemetery, Welch. The remains will lie in state at 
the church one hour before the service.
   Mrs. Smith was born Nov 13, 1954, in Randolph County to the late Robert 
Hutchinson and Annie Ruth McClendon Foster. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon 
United Methodist Church. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her brother, 
Clayton L. Foster.
   Surviving are her husband, Robert L. Smith of Roanoke; two daughters, 
Kenyatta Johnson and Wilhelkina Elston, both of Roanoke; two brothers, William 
W. Foster of Roanoke and Blake Foster of Atlanta; three sisters, Sandra 
Hutchinson, Kathy Hutchinson and Tammy Johnson, all of Atlanta; a devoted 
cousin, Brenda Wilkes of Roanoke; four grandchildren; four aunts; six nieces; 
three nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

   (WEAVER) Services for Penny Hamlin Bowen, 62, of Weaver, will be at 2 p.m. 
Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Hollis Martin

   Mrs. Bowen died Friday, July 20, at her residence.
   Mrs. Bowen is survived by her husband, Wayland T. Bowen of Weaver; two 
daughters, Melanie Gurley of Weaver and Angie Medders of Anniston; a son, Mark 
Pate of Lineville; two sisters, Clovis McCord of Oxford and Patricia Pate of 
Munford; three brothers, Harold Deese of Carrollton, Ga., Horace Deese of 
Weaver and Wayne Deese of DeArmanville; seven grandchildren; and several nieces 
and nephews. Mrs. Bowen was preceded in death by first husband, Gray Hamlin; a 
sister, Debra Pate; and two brothers, Anthony and Thomas Deese.
   Mrs. Bowen was a native of Randolph County and resident of Weaver most of 
her life. She was retired from Sewell Manufacturing of Heflin with 25 years of 
service. She was a member of Hall's Chapel Baptist Church.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mildred Cummings Pike, 74, of Roanoke were Thursday,

in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Pike died Tuesday, July 17, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include two sons, Eddie and Danny Pike of Roanoke; three sisters, 
Jo Brookin of Lanett and Betty Veal and Eddie Kirby of LaGrange; five 
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Joey Fincher and Randy Cummings.
   Mrs. Pike was born Sept. 7, 1932, son of Dan and Mattie Thraser Cummings. 
She was a member of Forest Home Congregational Christian Church and had worked 
at Handley Mills. Mrs. Pike was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Frank 
Pike, and her parents.

Johnny Glass

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Services for Johnny Glass, 56, of LaGrange, Ga., formerly of 
Roanoke, will be Thursday, July 26, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel, with the Rev. Benny Phillips and the Rev. Clifford Delee officiating. 
Burial will follow in Flat Rock Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
   Mr. Glass died Tuesday, July 24, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Ella Wright Glass of LaGrange; one son, James 
Eddie Welch of LaGrange; his mother, Lorine Glass; one sister, Rose Marie 
Gilbert of Ashland; and one brother, David Glass of Roanoke.
   Mr. Glass was born May 1, 1951, son of John Wally and Lorine Knight Glass. 
He attended Faith Tabernacle Church in LaGrange and had worked for the City of 
Roanoke. Mr. Glass was preceded in death by his father.
