Amelia Thweatt Shumpert, 95, of Benton Harbor, Mich., died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph, Mich. Services were Tuesday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, Roanoke, with Pastor Shannon Allison, the Rev. L.B. Houston and the Rev. R.L. Heflin officiating. Burial was in Ashdale Cemetery, Tuskegee. Mrs. Shumpert was born July 14, 1911, in Tuskegee, daughter of the late Thomas Perry Thweatt and the late Lilla Perryman Thweatt. She obtained a B.S. degree in business education from Tennessee State University in 1950 and did graduate studies at Northwestern University, Iowa State University, Indiana State and Auburn University. Amelia married Theodore Shumpert Aug. 19, 1937, and they had two children. In Roanoke she joined Bethel United Methodist Church and worked in the Sunday school, Methodist Youth Fellowship, as pianist and organist and in other various capacities. She also served as temporary pianist and other capacities for First Missionary Baptist Church. Amelia taught 30 years in the schools of the Roanoke area: county, city and vocational. She served as a board member of the Talladega-Clay-Randolph Child Care Corporation. Her activities after retirement continued in the church. She volunteered at Randolph County Learning Center; she was also involved with the Randolph County Farm Home Administration Screening Committee, Randolph County Extension Service Home Economics Council, Task Force Committee of Roanoke City Schools, and Randolph-Roanoke Vocational Advisory Board. She was a member for four years and president for one year of the Roanoke Board of Education. After the death of her husband in 1985, Amelia became a resident of Benton Harbor-St. Joseph Twin City area. She joined Second Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Mothers & Deaconess Board, Gospel Chorus and played the piano when needed. She was also a volunteer for the Benton Harbor Senior Center Choir and was a resident of Adkins Village. Survivors include a daughter, Lottie Shumpert Pugh of Benton Harbor; a son, Theodore William Shumpert of St. Louis, Mo.; and three granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Shumpert; a special sister-in-law, Geneva Shumpert; and son-in-law, William Pugh. Survivors include her husband, Raymond Morgan of Atlanta; a daughter, Judy Denise Morgan of Atlanta; two sons, Reginald Bernard Morgan of Smyrna, Ga., and Cedrid Lovell Morgan of Atlanta; three brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and a special niece Wanda Rowe of Austell, Ga. Burial followed at Mt. Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery at Stroud. Mr. Stephens died Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Birmingham. Survivors include his father, William C. Stephens of Roanoke; his stepmother, Inez Stephens of Roanoke; three sisters, Laura Patterson of Huntsville, Sue McWhorter of Madison and Kendra King of Roanoke; two step- sisters, Phyllis Rutherford of North Carolina and Vicki Clark of Georgia, a step-brother, Chris Rowe of Panama City, Fla.; a nephew; a great-nephew and great-niece; one aunt; eight cousins and a host of good friends. Mr. Stephens was born April 11, 1949, in Waco, Texas, son of William C. and Laura Beth Quinn Stephens. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke, and graduated from Handley High School, Auburn University (B.S. in accounting), Samford University (M.B.A.), and Cumberland School of Law (Doctor of Jurisprudence). Following three tours of duty as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, he served 25 years with the Alabama National Guard. He was an attorney, college instructor, businessman and consultant to foreign governments in the war on terror. Among his many activities were Master Gardener, Masons and Cahaba River preservation. Graveside services for Agnes Marie Baird Pendleton, 88, of Maryville, Tenn., formerly of Roanoke, were Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at 3 p.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery. Mrs. Pendleton died Saturday, March 3, at Morningview Transitional Care in Maryville. Survivors include a daughter, Glenn Marie Rochelle Hofmann of Norcross, Ga.; a son, John Hurt Rocky Rochelle of Alcoa, Tenn.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Hortense Toni Baird Cornwell of Canton, Ga.; a brother, James Dallas Baird Jr. of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services were Monday with the Rev. Brenda and Larry Carroll officiating. Mrs. Pendleton was born to James Dallas and Sarah Laduska Swan Baird on March 14, 1918. She graduated from Randolph County High School, then moved to Atlanta to attend beauty school. Agnes met and married John Hurt Rochelle, a pharmacist in Atlanta. They had two children. They moved to the Stone Mountain community in Clarkston, Ga., where they resided for eight years. She was very involved in the Clarkston Methodist Church. Widowed in 1956, Agnes met and married John Emerson Pendleton Sr. and moved to Fountain City in 1960. They resided on Tazwell Pike in Knoxville, Tenn., and attended Fountain City United Methodist Church. After John's death in 1988, Agnes moved to Maryville, residing in the Jamestown condominiums for 14 years. She later moved to the Morningview Village Assisted Living where she lived for almost four years. She was a member of Maryville First United Methodist Church and an active member of the Shields Sunday School Class. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Elizabeth Baird Garner Vinson of Birmingham and Roanoke, and Susan Baird Huckaby of Knoxville and Charlotte, N.C. She was born July 17, 1916, in Carroll County, Ga., to the late Boyd and Merwyn McIntyre Higgins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Josephine, in 1936; her husband of 62 years, Burl B. Hammond, in 1994 and two brothers, Hugh and Gerald Higgins. Mrs. Hammond was a longtime resident of the Big Springs community in Randolph County and a member of Big Springs Baptist Church. She retired from Warren Sewell Clothing Company in Bowdon in 1978 after over 20 years of service. She relocated to Bremen in 1994 to reside with her daughter following the death of Mr. Hammond. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, at Big Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Scott Hannah and the Rev. David Daniel officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. He was retired from West Georgia Health System, where he worked as a security guard. Seldon Laten Green, 81, of Lithia Springs, Ga., died Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Wellstar Douglas Hospital. Mr. Green was born Nov. 17, 1925, in Clay County, Ala., son of the late Jarruth Green and the late Opal Stansell Green. He married Agnes Price 60 years ago, on March 15, 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Zaniah in the Pacific Theater and during the Battle of Okinawa. He was a resident of Lithia Springs since 1955 and was a Ruritan member in the community for over 40 years having served in the offices of president, secretary, treasurer and zone governor. The club was instrumental in starting the Lithia Springs Post Office, fire department, library and providing street signs for the Lithia Springs area. Mr. Green was a member of Lithia Springs First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 40 years and as a Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Anglers Sunday School Class. He earned several degrees from Southern Baptist Education Extension. Mr. Green worked for Equifax Credit as a binderyman. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson, Bobby Robinson.
