OBITUARIES:



William M. Bill' Barker

   (MURRAY, Ky.) William M. Bill Barker, 94, of Murray, Ky., 
formerly of Bowdon, Ga., died Dec. 23, 2007.
   Mr. Barker was born in Wedowee on Oct. 27, 1913. He retired 
with the Murray Electric System in 1979 as superintendent. He 
attended the First Methodist Church in Murray and was a World War 
II Army veteran.
   Survivors include his wife, Charolette Barker of Murray; 
daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and Bob Arnold of Frankfort, Ky.; 
one grandchild; and four nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Wheeler Barker 
and Beuna Traylor Barker; two sisters, Mary Watkins and Merlie 
Brown; and a brother, John Barker.
   Funeral services will be Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at the graveside, 
Murray City Cemetery, with the Rev. Chuck Shuffett officiating.

J.B. Henderson

   (HENDERSONVILLE, N.C.) J.B. Henderson, 79, of Hendersonville, 
N.C., died Monday, Dec. 24, 2007, at after a long battle with 
both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease.
   He was born in Corinth, Miss., on Nov 15, 1928. He played both 
high school and college football. He attended Hinds Junior College 
and then Auburn University. He graduated from Auburn University in 
1951 with a degree in industrial engineering. After graduating, he 
took a job with General Electric, which took him all over the 
Northeast and finally to Hendersonville in 1955. After one last 
move, in 1966-1968, working in the GE plant in Erie, Penn., he 
worked the remainder of his career in Hendersonville as manager of 
manufacturing.
   He was an active member of the Hendersonville Church of Christ, 
serving as an elder for 25 years. He was a member of the Kiwanis 
Club. He served on the board of trustees of Pardee Hospital for 
many years. He was an avid bridge player, but above all, he put 
God and his wife and family first in everything he did in his life.
   Preceding him in death were his parents, Clovis and Verda 
Henderson; his sisters, Dorothy and Hazel Jane; and his daughter 
Ellen Henderson Neal. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, 
Lucille May Henderson, formerly of Roanoke; his two daughters, Jane 
Henderson Bryant of Birmingham and Lisa Henderson Curtis of Signal 
Mountain, Tenn.; and his son, Joe Henderson of Dalton, Mass.; and 
11 grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday Dec. 29, at 
Hendersonville Church of Christ with Minister Jerry Senn 
officiating. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery with all eight 
grandsons serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 
on Friday, Dec. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thos. Shepherd & Son 
Funeral Directors.

Florene McCright Still

   (LANETT) Florene Still, 84, of Lanett died Monday, Dec. 24, 
2007, at University Hospital in Birmingham.
   Graveside funeral services were Friday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. at 
Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett with the Revs. Roy Bain and Bill Smith 
officiating.
   Mrs. Still is survived by two children, Carol Barineau of 
Tallahassee, Fla., and Deborah Tuck of Pell City; six 
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Runell 
Wilson of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Still was born July 27, 1923, in Randolph County to the 
late Dovie Washington McCright and Herkless McCright. She was a 
member of Lanett Congregational Christian Church. Mrs. Still was a 
homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Still.

Denise Taylor Ferrell

   (OPELIKA) Denise Taylor Ferrell, 38, of Opelika died Tuesday, 
Dec. 25, 2007.
   She is survived by her husband, Eddie Ferrell; and two sons, 
Luke and Aaron, all of Opelika; her parents, C.A. "Red" and Lanette 
Taylor of Montgomery; two sisters, Dianne Taylor and Dana McGregor 
of Montgomery; one nephew; and her mother-in-law, Myrtice Ferrell 
of Roanoke.
   Services were at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, at 10th Street 
Church of Christ in Opelika. Ministers officiating were Ross 
Mitchell and Claude Flynn of Opelika, Levi Sides of Jasper, Colin 
McKee of Cleveland, Ala., and Gerald Romine of Roanoke.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) L.B. Richardson, 88, of LaGrange, Ga., died 
Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Survivors include his wife, Ruth Richardson; daughter, Mary 
Richardson; two sons, Jimmy Richardson and Joel Richardson; three 
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister.
   Graveside funeral services will be at 1 p.m. CST Monday, Dec. 
31, at Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Roanoke.

Grace Rosalee Philpott

   (ELKHORN, Wis.) Services for Grace Rosalee Philpott, 94, of 
Elkhorn, Wis., formerly of Roanoke, were Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, 
at  Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Teague 
officiating.  Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Philpott died Sunday, Dec. 23, at Aurora Lakeland Medical 
Center in Elkhorn.
   Pallbearers were Kyle Morgan, Johnny Morgan, Kyle Herren, Gene 
Hamm, Robbie Ledbetter, Josh Smith and Doug Steen.
   Survivors include one daughter, Joan Finley of Elkhorn; a 
sister, Vena Ledbetter of Palmetto, Ga.; two grandchildren and 
several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her 
husband, S.T. Philpott.
   Mrs. Philpott was born Dec. 10, 1913, daughter of Seaborn and 
Celestin McLeod Nolen. She was a member of First Church of God in 
Roanoke and worked in the twister room at Handley Mills.

Willie Belle Sears, 100

   (JASPER, Ga.) Services for Willie Belle Sears, 100, of Jasper, 
Ga., formerly of Randolph County, were Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, 
at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jamie Meeks 
officiating. Burial followed at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Sears died Saturday, Dec. 23, at Piedmont Mountainside 
Hospital in Jasper following a period of declining health.
   Survivors include a daughter, Jean McElhattan of Jasper; a 
sister, Selma Hill of Roanoke; and several nieces, nephews, great-
nieces and great-nephews.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Sears was born July 7, 1907, 
daughter of Levi and Lula Alsabrook. She was preceded in death by 
her parents and her husband, Cubie Lee Sears.

Kenneth Bonner Taylor

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Services for Kenneth Bonner Taylor, 55, of 
LaGrange, Ga., formerly of Wadley, were Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, 
at 4 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby 
Burroughs and John D. Taylor officiating. Burial followed at the 
Taylor family cemetery.
   Mr. Taylor died Monday, Dec. 24, at West Georgia Medical Center 
in LaGrange.
   Survivors include his wife, Susann Pearson Taylor of LaGrange; 
two daughters, Elisabeth Susann Taylor and Anna Pearson Taylor, 
both of LaGrange; a son, Kenneth Benjamin Taylor of LaGrange; his 
mother, Frankie Taylor of Wadley; and a sister, Peggy Wilkins of 
Wadley.
   Pallbearers were Steve Carson, Mike Carson, Scott Nixon, Phillip 
Nixon, Jeff Matthews and Burton Matthews.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Taylor was born Feb. 26, 1952, son 
of Elton Bonner and Frances Gray Taylor. He was a member of Hope 
Memorial Christian Church. He was a registered respiratory 
therapist and had been employed with Randolph Medical Center. He 
also operated Taylor Respiratory Services, a home oxygen business, 
for many years.   He was preceded in death by his father, Bonner 
Taylor; a son, Jon Gray Taylor; and a brother, Phillip Gray Taylor.

Lemmer Louise Harmon

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Lemmer Louise Harmon, 74, of Wedowee 
were Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Midway United Methodist 
Church, with the Rev. Tim Whaley officiating. Burial followed in 
the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Harmon died Friday, Dec. 28, at her home.
   Mrs. Harmon is survived by her husband, Benny Harmon of 
Wedowee; two daughters, Debbie Meigs of Kellyton and Donna Key of 
Wedowee; one son, Jeff Napier of Woodland; 12 grandchildren; and 
six great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Harmon was born Dec. 11, 1933, daughter of Luther and 
Connie Manley Perry. She was a member of Midway United Methodist 
Church and had been a convenience store clerk. Mrs. Harmon was 
preceded in death by three daughters, Jennifer Arrington, Delilah 
Rather and Renee Akins; three brothers, Hugh, Thomas and Verlie 
Perry; and five sisters, Avis Edmondson, Doris Huey, Mildred Kent, 
Marie Albright and Jo Cofield.
   Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the 
American Cancer Society.

Hugh Wilmot Egerton

   (BIRMINGHAM) Hugh Wilmot Egerton of Birmingham, died Saturday, 
Dec. 22, 2007.
   He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Hoyt Enloe Egerton, 
formerly of Wedowee; son, Hugh Enloe Egerton of Ludwigshafen, 
Germany; daughter, Kathleen Egerton Harkey of Nashville, Tenn.; 
three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in 
death by his parents, Hugh Wilmot Egerton Sr. and Florence White 
Egerton.
   Born Dec. 29, 1915, in Jacksonville, Fla., he was a most kind 
man, and a beloved son, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather 
and friend. Mr. Egerton graduated in the first class of Ramsey High 
School (Birmingham) and from Birmingham Southern College, earning a 
BA in English in 1937. He had a distinguished career in the U.S. 
Postal Service, beginning as a substitute mail clerk and ending his 
career as acting postmaster for Birmingham. In 1942 he was 
recruited as the youngest member of the first class of Professional 
Postal Inspectors known as the "silent investigators." His first 
assignment was Kentucky. He was transferred to the Birmingham 
office in 1947 and continued as a postal inspector until promoted 
in 1968 to assistant postmaster. He retired in 1972, having been 
acting Birmingham postmaster for two years. Formerly an active 
member of Trinity Methodist Church, he served on the board, taught 
Sunday school and sang in the men's choir. He and Mrs. Egerton were 
parent leaders for the Birmingham Youth Orchestra during the 1960s 
and active members of the Concordia Dance Club for 20 years. He 
loved Birmingham and was pleased to return to Highlands Avenue, 
where he also spent his youth.
   In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Birmingham 
Southern College scholarship fund. Graveside services were in 
Wedowee City Cemetery on Dec. 29 at 10:30 am. At 2 p.m. a family 
visitation was held-at Greenbriar at the Altamont, Birmingham.

William Howard Bailey

   (ROANOKE) Services for William Howard Bailey, 68, of Roanoke 
were Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Bonner and the Rev. Richie Farrow 
officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Bailey died Friday, Dec. 28, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include his adopted mother, Irene Clement.
   Pallbearers were John Bailey, Blake Prestridge, Mike Potts, 
Richard Tidwell, Nick Potts, Trae Wilkinson, Jesse Caldwell and 
Brian Sellers. Honorary pallbearers were officers of the Roanoke 
Police Department.
   Mr. Bailey was born June 27, 1939, son of John T. and Eunice 
Hendon Bailey. He was a member of High Pine Baptist Church, a 
retired salesman from Prestridge Ford and had his own wrecker 
service. Mr.   Bailey was preceded in death by his parents and two 
brothers, Leroy Bailey and John T. Bailey Jr.

Claudie Harrington Rice

   (HEFLIN) Services for Claudie Harrington Rice, 88, of Heflin 
were Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, 
with the Rev. Lewis Cushing and the Rev. Jerry Bolt officiating. 
Burial was in Harmony Congregational Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Rice died Friday, Dec. 28, at her home.
   Mrs. Rice is survived by two daughters, Joyce Cushing and 
Lenora Ragsdale of Heflin; two sons, Quinton Rice of LaGrange, 
Ga., and Paul Rice of Decatur; one sister, Ezell Stevens of 
Graham; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Rice was born April 4, 1919, daughter of Sam and Leona 
Smith Harrington. She was a member of Harmony Congregational 
Methodist Church and a homemaker. Mrs. Rice was preceded in death 
by her husband, Charlie Rice; and four stepsons, John, Shelly[,] 
Curtis and Amos Rice.

Darryl Tankersley

   (VALLEY) Services for Darryl W. Tankersley, 67, of Valley will 
be Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at 2 p.m. EST at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Chapel, Valley, with the Rev. Michael Spikes officiating. 
Burial will be in Langdale Cemetery.
   Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 3, from noon until 2 p.m. at 
the funeral home.
   Mr. Tankersley died Sunday, Dec. 30, at East Alabama Medical 
Center, Opelika.
   Born on Nov 4, 1940, in Langdale to the late Gloria Genelle 
Duncan Tankersley and Waymon Tankersley, Mr. Tankersley attended 
Evangel Temple. He was a veteran, having served a tour in the U.S. 
Navy. He was a retired employee of the Uniroyal Corporation, with 
35 years of service with the company.
   He is survived by his wife, Ellen Tankersley; three daughters, 
Cynthia Ann Barr of Birmingham and Tammie Lynn Williams and Sandra 
Kay Spikes of Opelika; six grandchildren; a sister, Dianne Rollins 
of Roanoke; and three nephews.

Linda Jewel Fincher

   (ROANOKE) Services for Linda Jewel Fincher, 65, of Roanoke were 
Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, 
with the Rev. Clarence Holinshed officiating. Burial will follow 
at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Fincher died Thursday, Jan. 3, at Eliza Coffee Memorial 
Hospital in Florence.
   Survivors include one son, Billy Fincher of Florence; two 
granddaughters: and one great-grandson.
   A Randolph County resident for most of her life, Mrs. Fincher 
was born Feb. 14, 1942, in Anniston, daughter of William and Molly 
Missouri King Bryce. She was a homemaker and the widow of Robert C. 
Fincher.
   Pallbearers were Thomas Bass, Dewey Bryce, Tim Bryce, Barry 
Bentley. Lewis Crockett and Kenny Hawkins.

Billy Fred McCain

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Billy Fred McCain, 80, of LaGrange, Ga., 
died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at West Georgia Medical Center, 
LaGrange.
   Mr. McCain was born Oct. 20, 1927, in Randolph County, Ala., 
the son of the late Myrtle Lee Huey McCain and the late Olin Grady 
McCain. Mr. McCain retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years at 
the rank of first sergeant and then retired from the Georgia 
Department of Corrections with 20 years of service. He was Baptist 
by faith.
   Survivors include his wife, Frances Hart McCain of LaGrange; 
two daughters, Carole Calhoun of LaGrange and Rebecca McCain of 
Garland, Texas; a son, Steve McCain of California; six grand- 
children; a sister, Nancy Newsome of Roanoke; and a brother 
Charles McCain of Dacula, Ga.
   Graveside services were at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Long Cane 
Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Allen Smith and Randy 
Gilbert officiating.

Jean Roberta Wiggins

   (NEWELL) Jean Roberta Wiggins, 62, of Newell died Thursday, Jan. 
3, 2008.
   Mrs. Wiggins was born Sept. 28, 1945, to the late Claude and 
Lilla Douglas Tucker. She was a homemaker and was a member of 
Antioch Baptist Church in Newell.
   Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Wiggins, and son, Ken 
Wiggins, both of Newell; brother, Doug Tucker of Bowdon, Ga.; 
sisters, Thelma Tucker of Barnesville, Ga., Evelyn Buchanan and 
Millie Smith of Bowdon and Wilma Wilson of Lake City, Ga.; and a 
number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was 
preceded in death by her brother, Vurlis Tucker; and sisters, 
Jessie Aultman and Linda Wiggins.
   Services were Saturday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. CST at Antioch 
Baptist Church in Newell with the Revs. Ridley Herren and Ray 
Runyan officiating. Tonya Messer provided the music. Pallbearers 
were Samuel Allums, Ronnie Young, Jason Tucker, Randy McManus, 
Jason Meadows and Greg Daniel. Burial followed in the church 
cemetery.

Jasper Bruner Stewart Jr.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Jasper Bruner Stewart Jr., 83, of Roanoke 
were Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel 
with the Rev. Bobby Burroughs officiating. Burial followed at 
Highway First Congregational Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Stewart died Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Randolph Medical Center. 
Mr. Stewart is survived by two sons, John Bryan Stewart and Jacky 
Stewart, both of Florida.
   Mr. Stewart was born April 20, 1924, son of Jasper Bruner 
Stewart and Mary Olen McGill Stewart. He was a member of First 
United Methodist Church in Roanoke and had been employed as a 
supervisor by Farmers Home Administration. He was preceded in death 
by his wife, Helen Baldwin Stewart.

Marvalene Prince Philpott

   (MABLETON, Ga.) Marvalene Prince Philpott, 86, of Mableton, Ga. 
died Tuesday, Jan. I, 2008, at the Lexington (S.C.) Medical Center 
Extended Care Center.
   She was born on April 3, 1921. in Roanoke. daughter of William 
Ezekiel Prince and Carrie Maud Prince. Marvalene grew up in Roanoke 
and was married to Woodie Wyatt Philpott. They lived together in 
Roanoke until moving to Mableton. Ga., following her husband's 
career change.
   Along with her husband, Marvalene was employed in the textile 
business early in her career and then worked as a bookkeeper. She 
was a faithful member of South Cobb. Church of Christ for many 
years and a gentle caregiver for her numerous great-grandchildren 
and other friends. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed 
telling children's stories.
   Marvalene is survived by a brother. James Dorsey Prince of 
Mableton; a daughter, Alecia Davis; two granddaughters; seven 
great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is 
preceded in death by her husband and siblings Gaynell Kelly, Cora 
Laney, Garvis Prince, Bama King and Alwyn Prince.
   A memorial service was held at South Cobb Church of Christ in 
Atlanta on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. EST.  A burial service 
followed at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke at 3 p.m. CST.
   Contributions in memory of Marvalene may be made to a memorial 
fund at South Cobb Cobb Church of Christ.

Lum Pierce Whaley

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Lum Pierce Whaley, 81, of Wedowee were

Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Whaley died Thursday, Jan. 3, at his home.
   Mr. Whaley is survived by two daughters, Linda Talley of 
LaGrange, Ga., and Carolyn Price of Wedowee; three sons, Jackson 
(Monroe) Whaley of Roanoke and James Larry Whaley and Lum Pierce 
Whaley Jr. of Wedowee; two sisters, Inez Holloway of Wedowee and 
Velma Mitchum of Huntsville; three brothers, Harvis Whaley of 
Wedowee and Pete Whaley and H.S. Whaley of Roanoke; 10 
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Chris Price, C.J. Price, Cory Whaley, Chad 
Whaley, Scottie Whaley, Steven Whaley, Justin Talley, Storm Foster 
and Jacob Trammell. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters, 
Lauryn Talley, Madison Sparks and Kasey Brown.
   Mr. Whaley was born June 3, 1926, son of Andrew Rube and Willie 
Mae Oats Whaley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lonita 
Boggs Whaley; his son, Steve Whaley; a grandson, Terry Herron; and 
a great-grandson, Coty Brown.

James Ray Smith

   (ROANOKE) Services for James Ray Smith, 66, of Roanoke were 
Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Potash Church of God, with

Burial followed in Potash Cemetery.
   Mr. Smith died Wednesday, Jan. 2, at his home.
   Mr. Smith is survived by one daughter, Lynn Shelnutt of 
Roanoke; and one son, Eddie Smith of Wadley; three sisters, Edith 
Steely of Woodland, Kathy Freeman of Ranburne and Betty Baker of

   Mrs. Wallace died Friday, Jan. 4, at her home.
   She is survived by her husband, Kennith K. Wallace of Munford;

of Munford; four brothers, William Clyde Simpson of Forest Park, 
Ga., Bobby Gene Simpson of Northport, Tommy Simpson of New Site 
and Ray Simpson of Anniston; and three grandchildren.

   Mrs. Wallace was a native of Randolph County, but had lived in

Purple Heart. Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by his parents.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Services for Robert Lee Wright, 61, of LaGrange,

Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Rushton died Friday. Jan. 11, at East Alabama Medical 
Center, Opelika.
   Survivors include her husband, Howard Gene Rushton of Roanoke;

Roanoke; three sisters, Vera Marziarz of Southington, Conn., Kitsa

   Mrs. Rushton was born Aug. 21, 1926, daughter of Theodore and

Glema Young Vowell

   (MACON, Ga.) Mrs. Glema Young Vowell, 89, of Macon, Ga., and 
formerly of LaGrange, Ga., died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at Gray 
Nursing Home in Gray, Ga.
   Mrs. Vowell was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Randolph County, Ala., 
daughter of the late Amon and Addie Lee Moses Heard. She was a 
former member of Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church for 35 years 
and was a current member of New Hope Baptist Church in Macon. Mrs. 
Vowell was retired from J.C. Penney. In addition to her parents, 
she was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Young; her 
second husband, Otis Riley Vowell; and by a son, Dr. Ray Vowell.
   Survivors include her daughters, Francine Hamilton of Haddock, 
Ga., and Martha Wolard of Clarksville, Tenn.; a son, Basil Young 
of LaGrange; a sister, Sara Abernathy of Atlanta; a brother, 
Raymond Heard of Roanoke; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Striffler-
Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel with the Revs. Bob Hamilton and

Homer E. Deese

   (FOLEY) Homer E. Deese, 82, of Foley died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 
2008.    Mr. Deese, a native of Graham, was an employee of Gulf 
Telephone
Company for 49 years. He retired in 1992 as vice-president of 
the company.
   He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Summerdale.
   Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marie Deese; sons, 
Kenneth Deese of Summerdale and Stanley Deese of Foley; sisters, 
Sybil Williams of Bowdon, Ga., Merle Preston of Oxford, Carolyn 
Brockmiller of Mobile and Sandra Clair of Fairburn, Ga.; a 
brother, Hulen Deese of Carrollton, Ga.; nine grandchildren, 20 
great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and a number 
of nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 5, at Pine Rest Funeral 
Home in Foley. Burial followed in Pine Rest Memorial Park.

Hoyt Enloe Egerton

   (VESTAVIA) Mrs. Hoyt Enloe Egerton, 98, of Vestavia, died on 
Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, 13 days after her beloved husband, Hugh 
Wilmot Egerton.
   Born Nov. 5, 1909, she was preceded in death by her father, 
Hoyt Enloe; mother, Ellen Mooty Enloe, both of Wedowee; and two 
sisters, Nell Howard Smith and Kathleen Enloe Forsyth. Surviving 
are: one son, Hugh Enloe Egerton, Mannheim, Germany; daughter, 
Kathleen Egerton Harkey, Nashville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; 
and one great-grandchild.
   Mrs. Egerton graduated at 16 from Randolph County High School. 
She attended two years at Maryville College, Tenn., and graduated 
in 1931 from Alabama Polytechnic Institute, her beloved Auburn. 
She attended graduate school at Columbia University in New York 
City and worked both as a teacher and home demonstration agent in 
Jefferson County.   She and Hugh married April 3, 1938, in 
Birmingham, where she worked.  Her passion for everything Auburn 
was only equal to her love of family, living and ancestral, 
friends, gardening, birds, dancing, sewing and painting. She was 
a member for over 50 years of her garden club, Trinity Methodist 
Church, Sigma Kappa Sorority, Concordia Dance Club and the Golden 
Eagles of Auburn. She and Hugh received tender and loving care 
from the staff at Greenbriar at the Altamont, for which the family 
is very grateful.
   Graveside services were held in Wedowee Cemetery on Monday, 
Jan. 7, at 1 p.m.

   (SENOIA. Ga.) Mary C. Langley of Senoia, Ga., died Jan. 13,

Alecia Philpott Davis

   (LEXINGTON, S.C.) Memorial services for Alecia Philpott Davis,

   Alecia, born June 28, 1944, in Roanoke, died Monday, Jan. 7.
   She was the daughter of the late Woodrow W. and Marvalene 
Prince Philpott. She graduated from Handley High School and was a 
biological science major at Auburn University. Alecia was a member 
of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, member and past president of the 
Lexington Woman's Club, and was active with the Congaree Council of 
the Girl Scouts of America, serving as board member, task force 
participant and troop leader. She volunteered with the South 
Carolina Department of Education to review and recommend textbooks 
for schools. Alecia was a Master Waste Educator sponsored by 
Clemson University. She was a founding member of the Lexington 
Library. Alecia worked tirelessly with the American Cancer Society 
in many capacities and was dedicated to the American Cancer Society 
Relay for Life, heading up the survivors' committee. Alecia was a 
lighting consultant and worked at Lexington Elementary School as a 
librarian assistant. She loved children's literature and was a 
beloved children's storyteller.
   Alecia is survived by her husband, George H. "Smokey" Davis; two 
daughters, Carrie Cousar of Anderson, S.C., and Diane Thomas of 
Alexandria, Va.; and seven grandchildren.

Raymond Leroy Harper

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Raymond Leroy Harper, 76, of Bowdon, Ga., died 
Monday, Jan. 7, 2008.
   Mr. Harper was born May 21, 1931, to the late William Richard 
and Mamie Webb Harper. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
   Survivors include his wife, Delores Harper of Bowdon; sons, 
Roger Harper of Molena, Ga., and Randell Harper of Hogansville, 
Ga.; daughters, Carol Ross of Texas, Deborah Hayes of Rocky Mount, 
N.C., and Bridget Patterson of Bowdon; brothers, Lester Harper of 
LaGrange, Ga., and Vernard Harper and Donald Harper, both of Bowdon; 
sisters, Eunice Parmer of Woodland and Dura Toole of Bowdon; eight 
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his 
parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Grady and Earnest

   A life-long Randolph County resident, Mr. Jeter was born Aug.

   He was preceded in death by his companion, Stacy Sheppard; his 
father, Bruce Jeter; brother, Richard Jeter; grandparents, Hoyt and 
Etha Mae Bowen, and Cleo and Sally Jeter.

OBITUARIES:

Betty Adams Slay Ziglar

   (ROANOKE) Services for Betty Adams Slay Ziglar, 78, of Roanoke, 
formerly of McComb, Miss., were Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at 2 p.m. at 
First Baptist Church of Roanoke with the Rev. Jeff Holder 
officiating. Burial followed in Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Ziglar died Friday, Jan. 18, at her home.
   Survivors include three sons, Billy B. Slay Jr. and Curtis Slay, 
both of Birmingham, and Adam Slay of Roanoke; one stepson, Tom 
Ziglar Jr. of Roanoke; eight grandchildren; and three great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were John Landers, Tommy Hendon, Jonathan Caldwell, 
Walter Sudduth, Charlie Harris, Don Strength, Derick Farr, Hutch 
Hammond and Pat Awbrey. Honorary pallbearers will be all personnel 
for the City of Roanoke, McGilvray's, and members of her Sunday 
school classes.
   Mrs. Ziglar was born June 3, 1929, daughter of Joseph F. and 
Lillian Hill Adams. She was a member of First Baptist Church of 
Roanoke, had owned McGilvray's Ladies and Men's Apparel, served on 
the Roanoke City Council for four years and as mayor of Roanoke for 
12 years. Mrs. Ziglar was preceded in death by her husbands, Billy 
B. Slay and Tom Ziglar.
   Memorials in her honor may be made to First Baptist Church of 
Roanoke, Awbrey Public Library or Roanoke City Schools.

Dettie Pool Bailey, 101

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Dettie Pool Bailey, 101, of 
Wedowee were Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant 
Baptist Church, with Barrett Holloway officiating. Burial followed 
in the adjoining cemetery.
  Mrs. Bailey died Saturday, Jan. 19, at Lineville Nursing Facility.
  Mrs. Bailey is survived by two daughters, Clara Yates of Auburn 
and Wildred Owen of Montgomery; two sons, Calvin Bailey of Wedowee 
and Clarence Bailey of Lineville; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-
grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and two step-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were her grandsons.
   Mrs. Bailey was born Dec. 9, 1906, daughter of John Harm and 
Letha Marenda Overton Pool. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant 
Baptist Church and had been a homemaker. Mrs. Bailey was preceded 
in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Bailey; her parents; 
and two sons, C.B. and Herbert Bailey.

Terry Wayne Ennis

   (JACKSON'S GAP) Services for Mr. Terry Wayne Ennis, 45, of 
Jackson's Gap will be Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the 
chapel of Bass Funeral Home with the Rev. James Burkhalter, Rev. 
Roger Watts and Steve Kerley officiating. Burial will follow in 
the Hillview Memorial Park.
   The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 5 
until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
   Mr. Ennis died Sunday, Jan. 20, at Baptist Medical Center in 
Montgomery.
   He was born in Tallapoosa County on June 13, 1962, to James 
Luther Ennis and Mary Milam. Mr. Ennis was a member of New Life 
Baptist Church and worked for Kerley Motor Company doing 
upholstery.
   He is survived by four sons, Terry Wayne Ennis Jr. of Woodland, 
Jonathan Ennis of Roanoke and Curtis Dale Ennis and Nicholas Wayne 
Ennis, both of Jackson's Gap; one daughter, Crystal Ennis Dewberry 
of Woodland; three brothers, Lavon Ennis, of Alexander City, Danny 
Ennis of Jackson's Gap and Larry Allen Ennis of Minnesota; one 
sister, Donna Whaley Palmer of Alexander City; five grandchildren 
and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his 
parents, James Luther and Mary Ennis; one son, James Hasting Ennis; 
and one sister, Mickey Renay Ennis.
   Pallbearers will be James Ennis, Brandon Bice, Andy Kelly, 
William Burkhalter Jr., Kenny Shurum, Ricky Whaley and Steve Kerley.

Janeth Arwiltha Peery

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Janeth Arwiltha Peery of Alexander City died 
Jan. 12, 2008, at Russell Medical Center, Alexander City.
   Services for Mrs. Peery were on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. 
at Peace and Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church in Kellyton's 
Cottage Grove community with the Rev. Robert Williams officiating. 
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Peery was born to the late Chester A. and Sarah Smith 
Thomas Sr. on Jan. 23, 1929. She was a member of Peace and 
Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully 
until her illness. In her service for the Lord, she served as 
Sunday school superintendent and teacher. She held several 
positions in the Peace and Goodwill Missionary Society, including 
Morning Star District secretary and youth leader and youth leader 
for the Northeast Alabama State Convention (which affiliated her 
with many churches in Randolph County). She was worthy matron of 
Vester Chapter 779 A and a lifetime member of Girl Scouts of USA.
   Pallbearers were Marcus Jones, Marvin Jones, Xavier Beasley, 
Robert Shaw, Dwight Thomas, Melvin Ellis, Leo Robinson and the Rev. 
Bobby Palmore. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Peace and 
Goodwill.
   She is survived by three children, Ralph Thomas and Diane 
Deloney of Alexander City and Sara Moore of Huntsville; two 
brothers, Chester A. Thomas Jr. of Alexander City and Jerry Thomas 
of Opelika; one sister, Gwendolyn Berry of Alexander City; a 
brother-in-law; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; 
nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of other relatives and 
friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Jerome 
Peery and her youngest child, Pfc. Latonia Peery Wardale

Ned C. Maffett

   (NEWELL) Ned C. Maffett, 85, of Newell died Wednesday, Jan 16, 
2008, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services will be held at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Newell, on 
Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. David Staples 
officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Maffett 
will lie in state at the church one hour before the service.
   Mr. Maffett was born Dec. 16, 1922, in Heflin to the late Rev. 
John H. and Cora Bell Maffett. He joined Mt. Gilead Baptist Church 
in Newell at an early age and later served on and led the deacon 
board.  Mr. Maffett also served in the U.S. Army during World War 
II.
   Surviving are his loving wife, Elizabeth Maffett of Newell; two 
daughters, Barbara Maffett and Gurishea Maffett of Atlanta; five 
sons, Charlie Ray Jordan of Cincinnati, Ohio, John A. Maffett of 
Los Angeles, Calif., Stanford Maffett and Chris Maffett of Atlanta 
and Clarence Maffett of Newell; three special children, Antwannesia 
Maffett, Devonta Maffett and Janetta Maffett of Newell; one brother, 
Robert Lee Maffett of Philadelphia, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-
grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephew, cousins and friends.

Imia Jean Edge

   (PENTON) Imia Jean Edge, 71, of Penton died Friday, Jan. 18, 
2008, at Bethany House Hospice in Auburn.
   Graveside services were Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at Penton 
Cemetery with the Revs. Steve Powell and Bruce Glass officiating.
   Born in Cleburne on Sept. 9, 1936, Mrs. Edge and her husband 
have operated Edge's Grocery in Penton for 50 years.
   She is survived by her husband, Larry Edge of Penton; two sons, 
Mike Edge and Bill Edge of Penton; four grandchildren; two sisters, 
Agnes Hendrix of Roanoke and Mildred Pierce of Munford; and a 
special caregiver, Willie Dean.

Raymond Morgan Sr.

   (EVANSTON, Ill.) Services for Raymond Morgan Sr., 65, of 
Evanston, Ill., were Friday, Jan. 11, at 10:30 a.m. at Gardner 
Funeral Home, Chicago, with pastor Eloise Jones officiating. 
Burial was at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Chicago.
   Mr. Morgan died Friday, Jan. 4, at Northwestern Memorial 
Hospital in Chicago.
   Mr. Morgan was born June 30, 1942, in Roanoke to Wash Morgan 
and Donna Finley. Ho was the sixth of their 12 children and 
attended Randolph County Training School. In 1964, Mr. Morgan 
became a resident of Evanston, where he met Emma Smith. They 
married on June 11, 1966. In addition to other employment, Mr. 
Morgan worked for many years at Active Provision Meat Company. He 
was well known for his big smile and warm personality and 
classiness. He had a deep love for children and spoiled his 
grandchildren.
   He is survived by his wife, Emma Morgan; his daughter Andrea 
and son Raymond Jr.; two sisters, Mary Baker and Sharon Phillips 
of Roanoke; brothers, George Morgan, Johnny Morgan and Bobby Mack 
Morgan, all of Roanoke; brothers- and sisters-in-law; and a host 
of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Morgan was preceded 
in death by his parents and six siblings.
   Pallbearers were Raymond Morgan Jr., Lamont Phillips, Larry 
Creath, Eugene Nelson, Tony Mathis and Jason Nelson. Honorary 
pallbearers were Dwayne Jones and Donald Clemons.

Margaret Clestell Smith

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Margaret Clestell Smith, 77, of LaGrange, Ga., 
died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Born May 20, 1930, in Randolph County, Ala., Mrs. Smith was the 
daughter of the late Huey and Mattie Akins Freeman. She had lived 
in LaGrange since 1952, was a member of Lighthouse Church of God 
and was retired from the Kex Division of Milliken and Co.
   Survivors include two daughters, Betty Pursley of LaGrange and 
Patsy Fuller of Pine Mountain, Ga.; one son, Huey Smith of Pine 
Mountain Valley, Ga.; two sisters, Sara Janie Lucas and Betty 
Creed, both of LaGrange; 16 grandchildren, including Bobbie Fuller 
who served as her special caregiver; and 32 great-grandchildren. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Wesley Smith; daughter, 
Myrtle Sprayberry; and son, Raymond Moree.
   Services were at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 20, at Lighthouse Church 
of God in LaGrange. The Revs. Ronnie and Lillie Fuller officiated 
and interment was in Meadoway Gardens.

Myrtie Harlin McDaniel

   (ROANOKE) Services for Myrtie Harlin McDaniel, 79, of Roanoke 
were Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Freedom Harbor Church, 
with the Rev. Vernon Willis and the Rev. Jerry McCormick 
officiating. Burial followed at Highway Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. McDaniel died Saturday, Jan. 19, at her daughter's home.
   Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Fincher of Roanoke and 
Donna Franklin of Wedowee; three sons, Larry McDaniel and Allen 
McDaniel of Roanoke and Kenny McDaniel of Woodland; two sisters, 
Christine Laney of Temple, Ga., and Helen Cline of Oxford; four 
brothers, Elmer Ray Harlin of Lanett, Rudolph Harlin of Savannah, 
Ga., Jack Harlin of Lithia Springs, Ga., and Raymond Harlin of 
Roanoke; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and seven great-
great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Olen 
McDaniel; two sisters, three brothers and one great-great-
grandchild.  Grandsons and great-grandsons served as pallbearers.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. McDaniel was born 
Sept. 2, 1928, daughter of James Allen and Mary Robinson Harlin. 
She was a member of Freedom Harbor Church and the mother and 
founder of the McDaniel Family Gospel Singers. She has been 
employed with Palm Beach Company.
   Memorials may be floral or the family suggests contributions 
to Freedom Harbor Church (7669 Co. Rd. 59, Roanoke, AL 36274).

Charlie W. Kirk Sr.

   (WAVERLY) Rev. Charlie W. Kirk Sr., 86, of Waverly died Friday, 
Jan. 18, 2008, at LaFayette Nursing Home.
   Services will be at St. Luke C.M.E. Church, Oakbowery, on 
Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m., with Elder Leo Douglas officiating.  
Interment will be in the church cemetery. The remains will lie in 
state at the church one hour before the service.
   Rev. Kirk was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Detroit, Mich. He was 
raised by his parents, the late Phillip and Laura Kirk, in the 
Oakbowery community. He was a World War II veteran. During his 
military career, he was honored with the Purple Heart, the European 
African Middle East Campaign medal and many others. Rev. Kirk 
retired from the Apex Corp. as a warehouse manager with 30 years of 
service.
   At an early age he joined St. Luke C.M.E. Church, where he 
served as chairman of the steward board and was a member of the 
trustee board. On Sept. 15, 1974, Rev. Kirk received his preaching 
license from the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and pastored 
many churches, including New Hope, Salem; Garners Chapel, Phenix 
City; John Wesley, Motts; Freeman Chapel, LaFayette; Oak Grove, New 
Site; Coger Hill, Daviston; Macedonia, Troy; New Hope, Goodwater; 
and his home church St. Luke, Oakbowery.
   Rev. Kirk was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 50 years, 
Rosie Lee Kirk. Surviving are six children, Dorothy Mae Tate of 
Atlanta, Dorothy Lee Kirk of Thomaston, Ga., Bobby Lewis Kirk of 
San Diego, Calif., Charlie W. Kirk Jr. and Edward Kenny Kirk of 
Waverly and Billy Wayne Kirk of Opelika; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-
grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

   (ROANOKE) Services for John Andrew Johnny Mitchell, 57, of 
Roanoke were Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum

officiating. Burial followed at Midway United Methodist Church 
Cemetery, Wedowee.
   Mr. Mitchell died Friday, Jan. 18, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Judy Jones Mitchell of Roanoke; one 
daughter, Lisa Renae Sheppard of Roanoke; two sons, Shane Andrew 
Mitchell of Roanoke and Steven Crowder of LaGrange, Ga.; two 
brothers, Robert Mitchell of Roanoke and Wayne Mitchell of 
Montgomery; and ten grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jamie Norred, Derick Norred, Chad Mitchell, 
Gerald Mitchell, Shane Crowder and Jimmy Crowder.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Mitchell was born Nov 
15, 1950, son of James Andrew and Fannie Mae Nichols Mitchell. He 
was a member of Midway Full Gospel Church and was employed with 
Tommy Burke Logging.

Grady Hamilton Braswell Jr.

  (ALABASTER) Services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at 
Bellevue Baptist Church in Gadsden for Grady Hamilton Braswell Jr., 
77, of Alabaster, formerly of Gadsden, who died Thursday, Jan. 17.  
The Revs. Jerry Cobb, Bill Harbison and Mike Satterfield will 
officiate. Burial was at Hillview Memorial Park, Alexander City.
   Mr. Braswell was born in Bessemer and grew up in Wedowee. He 
graduated from Randolph County High School and earned a B.S. degree 
from Auburn University. He worked for Alabama Power for 38-years. Mr. 
Braswell lived in Gadsden for 23 years and was a devoted member of 
Bellevue Baptist Church. He was a loving and committed husband, 
father, father-in-law and Pop.
   Mr. Braswell is survived by his wife, Catherine Dean Braswell; a 
daughter, Jacqueline Braswell Hoge; four grandchildren; and two 
sisters, Thelma Lorene Braswell and Mary Frances Cobb. He was 
preceded in death by his parents, Grady H. Braswell Sr. and Ethel 
Landers Braswell; a sister Landers Braswell Morrison; and a brother, 
William Idus Braswell.
   Pallbearers were Micah Hoge, Caleb Hoge, Tom Beaube, Danny 
Braswell, Stephen Cobb, Mike Morrison, Donnie Keener and Calvin 
Hoge.  Honorary pallbearers will be David Braswell, John Cobb, John 
Jamison, John Pittman, James Cody, Amedisys Hospice of Birmingham 
and Paul Bearden and deacons of Bellevue Baptist Church.

Thelma McClendon Waldrep

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Thelma McClendon Waldrep, 93, of LaGrange, Ga., 
died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mrs. Waldrep was born Jan. 15, 1915, in Randolph County, Ala., 
daughter of the late John Wesley Yarbrough and Myrtis Eliza Teal 
Yarbrough. She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and was a 
member of Unity Methodist Church. Mrs. Waldrep was employed with 
Callaway Mill as a machine operator before retiring and was later 
employed with Doris Beauty Shop as a beautician. She was preceded 
in death by her husbands, Buster McClendon and Carlos Waldrep; and 
three children, Peggy Sutton, Jimmy Wayne McClendon and Betty King.
   Survivors include her son, Gene McClendon of LaGrange; nine 
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great
grandchildren; stepdaughter, Doris Yarbrough of LaGrange; and 
sister, Gussie Mae Lewis of Tallahassee, Fla.
   Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan.. 19, at Striffler-Hamby 
Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel, with the Rev. S.T. Janney officiating.       
Burial followed in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Edna Ruth Moore

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Edna Ruth Moore, 83, of Wedowee will be 
Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 
with the Revs. Corky Addison, Tommy Carr and Billy East officiating. 
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Moore died Monday, Jan. 21, at her home.
   Survivors include two daughters, Dianne Wortham of Wedowee and 
Brenda Holloway of Wedowee; two sons, Charlie Moore of Opelika and 
James Moore of Wedowee; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Sidney Moore, Paul Frye, Keith Mulder, 
Thomas Langley, Matt Robinson, Matt Holt and Donnie Wortham.
   Mrs. Moore was born Dec. 21, 1924, daughter of Wesley and Delia 
Bean Adamson. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and a 
home health caregiver. Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her 
husband, Howard Moore, and one grandson, Daniel Wortham. Flowers 
will be accepted or donations may be made to the Mt. Pleasant 
Cemetery Fund.

Mary Pauline Wade

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mary Pauline Wade, 74, of LaGrange, Ga., died 
Saturday Jan. 26, 2008, at LaGrange Nursing and Rehabilitation 
Center.
   Miss Wade was born May 29, 1933, in Randolph County, Ala., the 
daughter of the late Charlie Merritt and Myrtice Freeman Wade. She 
had lived in LaGrange most of her life and attended Friendship 
Baptist Church. She was retired from the Dixie Plant of West Point 
Pepperell.
   Survivors include sisters, Dorothy Brown, Joyce Furgerson and 
Linda Brewster, all of LaGrange; and many loving nieces and nephews.
   Services will he at 2 p.m. EST Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Hunter-
Allen-Myhand Chapel with the Rev. James Moon officiating. Interment 
will be at Shadowlawn Cemetery.

   Mrs. Akins was born June 30, 1955, daughter of Marion and Lorene

Doris Ann Hale

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Doris Ann Hale, 73, of LaGrange, Ga., died 
Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at West Georgia Medical Center.
   Miss Hale was born April 4, 1934, in Randolph County, Ala., 
daughter of the late George Dewey and Jessie Mae Heard Hale. She 
was a retired educator from the Muscogee County School System with 
30 years of service and a member of Unity Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her nephew and his wife, Charlie and Jane 
Murphy; and a niece and her husband, JoAnn and Ronald Massey, all 
of LaGrange; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
   Services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Hunter-Allen-Myhand 
Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Robinson officiating. Interment was in 
Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Frances Hudson Brooks

   (FIVE POINTS) Frances Hudson Brooks, 78, of Five Points, died 
Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Survivors include her husband, Richard Brooks of Five Points; 
two daughters, Karen Daniel and Debra Deason of Roanoke; two sons, 
Clinton Brooks of Hickory Flat and Steve Brooks of Roanoke; seven 
grandchildren: seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-
grandchildren.
   A native and lifelong resident of Chambers County, Mrs. Brooks 
was born April 8, 1929, daughter of Jimmy Lee and Molly Perry 
Hudson. She was Baptist by faith and a homemaker.

James T. Browning Sr.

   (LAFAYETTE) James T. Browning Sr., 83, of LaFayette died 
Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at LaFayette Extended Care.
   Services were at Jeff Jones Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Saturday. 
Jan. 26. with interment in Concord Cemetery in Wadley. The Rev. 
Bill Hand and the Rev. Jim Browning officiated.
   Surviving are his wife, Mae Browning of LaFayette; three 
children, Rev. Jim Browning of Birmingham, Yvonne Denison of York, 
Pa., and David Browning of Pine Mountain, Ga.; four brothers, J.C. 
Browning of Huntsville, Max Browning of Las Vegas, Nev., Gordon 
Browning of Germany and Lee Browning of Panama City, Fla.; seven 
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Mr. Browning was a native of Alabama, born Jan. 18, 1925. He 
owned and operated Browning's Five & Dime Store in LaFayette and 
later worked for the city of LaFayette. He was a member of First 
Baptist Church of LaFayette.

Janice Lamerill Freeman

   (HEFLIN) Services for Janice Lamerrill Freeman, 61, of Heflin 
were Saturday. Jan. 26, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Jordan's Chapel 
Congregational Methodist Church, with the Revs. Ray Clevenger, 
Jerry Bolt and Charlie Bolt officiating. [? Mrs.] Burial followed 
in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Freeman died Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Long Term Health 
Hospital in Anniston.
   Survivors include one daughter, Regina Bowen Barnwell of Heflin; 
one son. Joe Bowen of Heflin; and two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were friends and family.
   Mrs. Freeman was born Dec. 30, 1946, daughter of Leonard and 
Cora Cummings Prestridge. She was a member of Jordan's Chapel 
Congregational Methodist Church and a seamstress for Sewell 
Manufacturing in Bowdon, Ga. Mrs. Freeman was preceded in death by 
her husbands, James Noles and Mayo Bowen; her parents; one sister, 
Georgia Marie Prestridge; and one brother, Bural Prestridge.

Patriot Ward Johnson

   (BROOKLYN, N.Y.) Patriot Ward Johnson, a longtime resident of 
West Point, Ga., died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at her home in 
Brooklyn. She was 85 years old.
   Mrs. Johnson was born in Wadley, Ala., on Aug. 31, 1922, the 
fifth child and youngest daughter of Bannie Allen Ward and William 
Lumpkin Ward. The family later moved to Langdale, where Mrs. 
Johnson met her future husband, Willie Lee Johnson. The couple was 
married in 1940 and moved to West Point in 1955. Mrs. Johnson 
became the secretary to the principal of West Point Elementary 
School and then was appointed Troup County executive for the 
American Red Cross, where she served with great distinction for 
many years. After her retirement, Mrs. Johnson studied literature, 
history and political science at Southern Union Community College 
in Valley and became an inveterate traveler, visiting many parts 
of North America and Europe with family members and with her much 
younger classmates. She moved to New York in 2006.
   For most of her life, Mrs. Johnson was a devoted member of the 
First Baptist Church of West Point, where she sang alto in the 
choir and taught a popular and deeply influential Sunday school 
class for young adults. An avid golfer, she was for many years a 
member of the Riverside Country Club and a mainstay of regional 
amateur competitions. She did volunteer work for the West Point 
Literacy Council and was active in local and state politics, 
working tirelessly in Jimmy Carter's campaigns. Later in life, she 
became a researcher and, with her daughter, co-authored the book 
"State Crime, the Media and the Invasion of Panama" (Praeger Series 
in Political Communication; Greenwood Press, 1994).
   Mrs. Johnson is survived by her son, Christopher Johnson of 
Brooklyn; her daughter, Christina Jacqueline Johns of Patterson 
Island, Ga.; two granddaughters; her brother, Bob Ward of Aledo, 
Texas; and her longtime companion, Marie Holloway of Lanett.
   The family will greet visitors at McCarthy's Funeral Home in West 
Point on Saturday, Jan. 26, between 6 and 8 p.m. A funeral service 
will be held at First Baptist Church in West Point on Sunday, Jan. 
27, at 2 p.m. with burial following at Marseilles Cemetery in West 
Point.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Friends 
of Hawkes Library, 100 West Eighth St., West Point, GA 31833.

Billy Lee Barintine

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Billy Lee Barintine, 37, of Wedowee were 
Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Cool Springs United 
Methodist Church, with the Rev. J.D. Bearden officiating. Burial 
followed in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Barintine died Monday, Jan. 21, at his home.
   Survivors include two sisters, Donna Bain of Heflin and Joyce 
Key of Wedowee; two nieces; three nephews; four great-nephews; and 
one great-niece.
   Pallbearers were friends and family.
   Mr. Barintine was born June 10, 1970, son of Wilburn Lee and 
Jeanette Rice Barintine. He had worked in the hatchery at Tyson 
Foods. Mr. Barintine was preceded in death by his parents.

Kathy Taylor Kirk

   (WADLEY) Services for Kathy Taylor Kirk, 54. of Wadley were 
Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Hope Memorial Christian 
Church, with the Rev. Bobby Burroughs and the Rev. Jimmy Brand 
officiating. Burial followed at Wadley Cemetery.
   Mrs. Kirk died Thursday, Jan, 24, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include her husband, Douglas Kirk of Wadley; one 
daughter, Teresa Adams of Wadley; one son, Tommy Kirk of Roanoke; 
her parents, Paul and Mae Parrish of Wadley; four grandchildren; 
one sister, Sybil Stephens of Wadley; and two brothers, Mike 
Taylor of Roanoke and Gene Taylor of LaFayette.
   Pallbearers were Ronnie Clark Sr., Paul Wilkerson, Donnie 
Knight, Scott Stewart, Ronald Caldwell and Donald Caldwell. Jerry 
Stephens and Ricky Noles served as honorary pallbearers.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Kirk was born March 
23, 1953, daughter of Durwood and Mae Knight Taylor. She was a 
devoted mother and grandmother, a member of Hope Memorial 
Christian Church, and a member of Randolph County Rescue Squad. 
She had owned and operated Kirk's Florist of Wadley for 30 years.

Flora L. Wright

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Flora L. Wright, 95. of Wedowee were 
Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Leven's Baptist Church, with 
the Rev. Joe Bob Traylor and the Rev. Tim Whaley officiating. 
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
   Miss Wright died Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Clay County Hospital.
   Survivors include five nephews and nieces, Ned Wright and Wyatt 
Wright III of Wedowee, Julia Ann Joyner of Newnan, Ga., JoAnne 
Clarkson of Clay County, and Bill Clarkson; a sister-in-law, Inez 
Wright of Wedowee; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews.
   Pallbearers were Jimmy McCain, Donald McCullers, Carl Nelson 
Jr., Wayne Taylor, Robert Cox, Wallace Lee, Charles Perry, Larry 
Messer and Terry Graham.
   Miss Wright was born June 18, 1912, daughter of Wyatt and Bertha 
Capehart Wright Sr. She was a member of Leven's Baptist Church and 
taught high school math for Randolph County Schools. Miss Wright 
was a member of the Wedowee Garden Club. She was preceded in death 
by her parents; two brothers, Wyatt Wright Jr. and Charles William 
Wright; one sister, Isabelle Clarkson; and one nephew, Barry Wright.
