OBITUARIES:

David Brannon Crockett Jr.

   (CARTERVSILLE, Ga.) David Brannon Crockett Jr., 59, of Cartersville, Ga., 
formerly of Heard County, Ga., died Friday, July 27, 2007.
   Services for Mr. Crockett were Monday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion 
Methodist Church in Glenn, Ga., with the Rev. Fred Mills officiating. Music was 
provided by Kim Crockett and Bryan Owensby. Pallbearers were David Crockett 
III, Richard Kelley, Nick Norred, Mark Kirby, Mikey Howard, Eric Yarbrough, 
Jason Richmond and Stevie Bolt.  Interment followed in the church cemetery. In 
lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Mount Zion 
Methodist Church.
   Mr. Crockett was born in Randolph County, Ala. on Nov. 22, 1947 to Hollis 
Awbrey Crockett and the late David Brannon Crockett Sr. He was a Christian by 
faith. He owned an Energy Conservation Business.
   He is survived by his wife, Susan Schell Crockett of Cartersville; children 
David Crockett III of Dallas, Ga., Julie Keller of Ellijay, Ga., and Kemberly 
Keller of Cartersville; his mother, Hollis Awbrey Crockett of Glenn, Ga.; 
sisters Patricia Norred of Roanoke and Susan Jacks of Ringgold, Ga.; a brother, 
Richard Crockett of Woodland; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mattie P. Smedley Felton

   (CINCINNATI, Ohio) Mattie P. Smedley Felton died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at 
Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio.
   Services were Saturday, July 21, at First Baptist Church of Cumminsville, 
Cincinnati. Officiating were the Rev. George Southerland, pastor, and the Rev. 
Stacy K. Bell, her nephew, who delivered the eulogy. Mattie was the minister of 
music for 38 years.
   Mrs. Felton was a graduate of the 1958 class of Randolph County Training 
School, Roanoke. She retired after 28 years as an accounting technician for the 
Internal Revenue Service.
   Mattie was predeceased by her husband, Larry Felton; her parents, Howard and 
Arlevia Smedley; and a sister, Wyvonnie Smedley Lindsey.
   Survivors include two children, Howard Dwayne and Lueree Felton; one 
grandson; two sisters, Mary Smedley Heath of Anniston and Sarah E. Smedley Bell 
of Conyers, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Minnie J. Fincher

   (LANETT) Services for Minnie J. Fincher, 69, of Lanett will be Wednesday, 
Aug. 1, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Gene 
Young and the Rev. Wayne Greathouse officiating. Burial will follow at Center 
Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Ms. Fincher died Sunday, July 29, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Survivors include two sons, Ricky Fincher of Lanett and Randy Fincher of 
Roanoke; three sister[s], Bertha Barber of LaFayette and Cordie Dobson and Faye 
Bennett of Roanoke; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers will be Jackie Brown, Mark Mason, Chad Brown, Charlie Brown, 
Parker Barber and Donnie Brown.
   Ms. Fincher was born June 11, 1938, daughter of Fred and Eunice Ward Brown. 
She had been employed as an inspector with Palm Beach Company and was a member 
of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

James Thomas Smallwood

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) James Thomas Smallwood, 65, of LaGrange, Ga., died Friday, 
July 27, 2007.
   Mr. Smallwood was born Dec. 24, 1941, in Roanoke, son of the late Handley T. 
Smallwood and Cora Lee Fowler Smallwood. He had lived in LaGrange most of his 
life and was a member of Lloyd Presbyterian Church. Mr. Smallwood was retired 
from the U.S. Postal Service as mail carrier. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and a 
member of the V.F.W.
   Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly Ann Smallwood and Michelle Lynn 
Smallwood of LaGrange; two grandchildren; six sisters, Marie Willingham of 
LaGrange, Betty Ann Nix of Clarkesville, Ga., Mary Ann Williams and Peggy Sue 
Ware of Tignall, Ga., Margaret Simmons of Baldwin, Ga., and Sarah Grimes of 
Elberton, Ga.; four brothers, Charles Smallwood of Hogansville, Ga., Bob 
Smallwood of Fredonia, Johnny Smallwood of Homer, Ga., and Leonard Knight of 
Roanoke; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
   Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2007, at Striffler-Hamby 
Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel. Burial will follow in Hillview East Cemetery.

Bessie Gay Barnes

   (RANBURNE) Bessie Gay Barnes of Ranburne died Thursday, July 26, 2007. She 
was 92.
   Mrs. Barnes was born on Aug. 24, 1914, in Cleburne County to the late Newell 
and Mary Ellen Batchelor Gay. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United 
Methodist Church and was a retired technician at Tyson Poultry.
   Survivors include her sisters, Blanche Morgan of Woodland and Waverlyn 
Vinson, June Jordan, Katie Crosson and Shirley Noles of Ranburne. In addition 
to her parents, Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Barnes, 
and her brothers, Ruby, Rudy, Earl and Fred Gay.
   Services were Sunday, July 29, at 2 p.m. CDT at Pleasant Grove FUMC in 
Cleburne County. The Revs. Allen Abney and Chris Jackson officiated. Music was 
by Mrs. Joyce Robinson. Burial followed in Union Hill Cemetery.
   Clarence Noles Jr., Johnathan Noles, Cody Fordham, Matt Fordham, Allen 
Crosson and Wallace Gay served as pallbearers.

   (IRVING, Texas) Graveside services for the Rev. Robert Thomas Newbold Jr.,

   Surviving are his wife, Avis Newbold of Irving, Texas; a son, Gregory 
Michael Leftwich Newbold of Carlsbad, Calif.; two daughters, Denise Greene of 
Edison, N.J., and Jan Leftwich of Houston, Texas; a stepdaughter, Deborah 
Hutson of Coppell, Texas; four grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and 
friends.

Edith Elizabeth Winston Thomas

   (CLEVELAND, Ohio) Edith Elizabeth Winston Thomas, 73, of Cleveland, Ohio, 
died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, in Kennesaw, Ga.
   Services were Friday, July 27, at 9 a.m. at Everlasting Baptist Church, 
Cleveland, Ohio, with the Rev. DeWitt Chappell Jr. officiating. Interment was 
in Lakeview Cemetery.
  Mrs. Thomas was born May 10, 1934, in Roanoke to William and Minnie Bell 
Winston. She was the oldest of seven children and a graduate of Randolph County 
Training School. She enjoyed cooking, cleaning, sewing and taking care of her 
children and grandchildren. She welcomed everyone.
   She is survived by three daughters, Linda Thomas, Cydney Thomas and Sharon 
Thomas, all of Cleveland; six sons, Roosevelt Thomas Jr., Kim Thomas, Chico 
Thomas and Sherman Thomas, all of Cleveland, William Thomas of Fayetteville, 
N.C., and Byron Thomas of Kennesaw; four sisters, Martha Thomas of Cleveland 
and Janette Baker, Cynthia Bell and Michelin Winston, all of Roanoke; and two 
brothers, Donald Winston of Aurora, Ill., and Aaron Winston of Valdosta, Ga.; 
21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, 
cousins and other relatives and friends.
  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roosevelt Thomas; and 
a son, Donald Thomas.

(The Randolph Leader, August 8, 2007 - Correction: In last week's obituary for 
Edith Thomas, it was stated that Mrs. Thomas was the oldest of her siblings. 
She was, in fact, the second oldest.)

Margaret Ann Harlin

   (ROANOKE) Services for Margaret Ann Harlin, 72, of Roanoke were Monday, July 
30, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Stanley 
Yarbrough and the Rev. Scott Whaley officiating. Burial followed at Center 
Chapel Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Harlin died Saturday, July 28, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   Survivors include three sons, Donnie Harlin of Wadley, Barry Harlin of 
Roanoke and Randal Harlin of Five Points; one sister, Mevline Adamson of 
Roanoke; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Coty Yarbrough, Chris Mobley, Mathew Harlin, Clay Tinney, 
Slay Whaley and Chuck Thompson.
   A lifelong resident, Mrs. Harlin was born April 10, 1935, daughter of Hosea 
and Ruby Ramsey Calhoun. She was a member of Bethany Lime Christian Church and 
had retired from Palm Beach Company.

Lela Brown Madden

   (WOODLAND) Services for Lela Brown Madden, 80, of Woodland were Monday, July 
30, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Freedom Harbor Church, with the Rev. Vernon Willis and 
the Rev. Jerry McCormick officiating. Burial followed at Highway First 
Congregational Methodist Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Madden died Saturday, July 28, at her residence. 
   Pallbearers were Nick Noles, Steve Nobley, Durant Noles, Scott Noles, Kevin 
Spears and Tony Moore.
   Mrs. Madden is survived by her husband of 56 years, C.T. Madden of Woodland; 
five sisters, Dellie Nobley of Roanoke, Pearlie Moore of Woodland, Ellen Noles 
of Roanoke, Louise Noles of Woodland and Willie Mae Ellis of Tallapoosa County; 
and one brother, Barney Brown of Woodland.
   Mrs. Madden was born June 11, 1927, daughter of Burl Barney and Lula Jane 
Brown. She had been employed as a seamstress for Lamar Manufacturing and was a 
member of Freedom Harbor Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; 
three sisters, Ruby Dye, Eva Seymore and Eula Mae Arrington; and one brother, 
Oscar Brown.

Vincent A. Martin

   (ROANOKE) Vincent A. Martin, 67, of Roanoke, and long-time LaGrange, Ga., 
resident, died on Thursday, July 26, 2007, at his home.
   Mr. Martin was born July 26, 1940, in Indiana, son of the late Orville 
Maurice Martin and Edna Jewell McDougal Martin. He was raised in the Methodist 
church and was currently attending Community Life Church in Roanoke.
   Survivors include three children, Kristel McAdoo of Roanoke, Beth Whisler of 
Lutz, Fla. And Bill Martin of North Georgia; and four grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Striffler-Hamby 
Mortuary's LaGrange Chapel with the Rev. Steve Dean officiating.

Betty Jo Hale Murphy

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Betty Jo Murphy, 74, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday, July 
24, 2007, at her home.
   Mrs. Murphy was born Feb. 16, 1933, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of 
the late George Dewey Hale and Jessie Mae Heard Hale. She had lived in LaGrange 
most of her life and was a member of South Highland Presbyterian Church. Mrs. 
Murphy was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Will Murphy Sr.
   Survivors include her daughter, JoAnn Massey; a son, Charlie Will Murphy 
Jr.; three grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Ann Hale.
   Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, at Oak Grove 
Congregational Christian Church Cemetery, Oak Grove Community, Pine Mountain, 
Ga., with the Rev. Bobby Robinson officiating.

Helen L. Pike

   (VALLEY) Helen L. Pike, 85, of Valley died Monday, July 30, 2007, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   Mrs. Pike was born Oct. 20, 1921, in LaGrange, Ga., daughter of the late 
Julius and Ola Mae Borders Aughtman. She was retired from Callaway Mills. Mrs. 
Pike lived in LaGrange most of her life and for the past several years had 
lived with her granddaughter, Linda and Tim Oates in Valley. She was a charter 
member of Harvest Baptist Church in Lanett. Mrs. Pike was preceded in death by 
her husband, Ivers Pike, a daughter, a son, and two grandchildren.
   Survivors include a daughter, Linda Hart of Pine Mountain, Ga.; a son, Jimmy 
Ray "Butch" Pike of LaFayette; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
   Services will be at noon on Thursday, Aug. 2, at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary 
LaGrange Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Bruner officiating. Burial will follow in 
Shadowlawn Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on 
Wednesday.

Dorothy Ilene' Bailey Fling

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Dorothy Ilene Fling, 84, of LaGrange, Ga., wife of the 
late Woodrow Fling Sr., died Thursday, July 26, 2007, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mrs. Fling was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the 
late Jasper Leon and Ara Belle Bowen Bailey. She had lived in LaGrange most of 
her life and was a member of Murphy Avenue Church of Christ. Mrs. Fling and her 
husband were the owners and operators of Fling's Grocery. She retired from the 
Kex Plant of Callaway Mills.
   Survivors include five daughters, Shirley Dukes, Reba Ray, Sandra Fling and 
Martha Fling, all of LaGrange, and Rhonda Pruitt of Lanett; and three sons, 
Woodrow Sonny Fling Jr. and Tony Fling of LaGrange and Jerry Fling of Locust 
Grove, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Alton Bailey 
of LaGrange, Ivory Bill Bailey of Panama City, Fla.; and several nieces and 
nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jean Fling.
   The funeral services will be at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday, July 28, at Murphy 
Avenue Church of Christ with evangelist Alton Bailey and Larry Thompson 
officiating. Interment will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery. The family will receive 
friends at the funeral home Friday from 6 until 8.

Lila Mae Cole

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lila Mae Cole, 83, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, Aug. 
8, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Fetner 
and the Rev. Doris Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood 
Cemetery.
   Miss Cole died Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Ruby Cole of 
Roanoke.
   Pallbearers will be her nephews.
   Miss Cole was born Oct. 16, 1923, daughter of William Robert and Lillie 
Maude Slaughter Cole. She was of the Baptist faith and had attended Randolph 
County Learning Center. Miss Cole was preceded in death by her parents; one 
sister, Lula Maude Mitchell; and two brothers, Junior and Charlie Frank Cole.

Lillian Mize Fincher

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lillian Mize Fincher, 85, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
Aug. 5, 2007, at 4 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Dean 
officiating.  Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Ms. Fincher died Saturday, Aug. 4, at Lineville Health Care.
   Survivors include a daughter, Ann Fincher Heard of Roanoke; two grandsons; 
and a sister, Beulah Sellers of Wedowee.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Fincher was born Aug. 10, 1921, 
daughter of Mark and Iva Lee Doster Mize. She was a member of Roanoke First 
United Methodist Church and the UMW Cumi Oaks Circle. She had retired after 
more than 30 years of teaching at Knight-Enloe Elementary School. She was a 
member of the Crape Myrtle Garden Club and the Randolph County Hospital Pink 
Ladies Auxiliary.
   Pallbearers were John Fincher, Donald Mitchurn, Jason McDaniel, Jason 
Vinson, Marty Ivey and Trey Reed.
   Memorials may be floral or the family suggests contributions to the 
Community Life Church Building Fund or the charity of one's choice.

   (WOODLAND) Services for Charles L. C.L. Holcombe, 86, of Woodland was 
Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Highway First Congregational Methodist

   Mr. Holcombe died Sunday, Aug. 5, at LaGrange Hospice.
   Survivors include two nephews, Gary and Shelia Spradlin of Bowdon, Ga., and 
Joe Mack and Ann Spradlin of Lavonia; special friends and caregivers, Morgan 
and Joyce Cantrell, Myrtice Baldwin, Tempie Mitchell, and Dennis and Kim 
Benefield.
   Pallbearers were Joe Mack Spradlin, Gary Spradlin, Major Cantrell, Viron 
Cantrell, Dale Meadows and Joe Calhoun. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Robert 
Copeland, Dr. Richard Simmons, Dr. Duttera, Dr. Smith, Dr. Tom Gore and Dr. 
Ewell.
   A Carroll County, Ga., native, Mr. Holcombe was born Aug. 30, 1920, son of 
Murdock Duke and Claudia Lee Cox Holcombe. He was a World War II army veteran, 
a member of Highway First Congregational Methodist Church and had been employed 
as an engineer with McCrary Engineering. He was preceded in death by his wife, 
Ruby McDow Holcombe.

Herman Autry

   (LANETT) Services for Herman Autry, who died on Sunday, July 29, 2007, at 
George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, were held Saturday, Aug. 4, at St. John 
Baptist Church on Cherry Drive at 2 p.m. EDT. The Revs. Walter Darden, Thomas 
Stafford, Billy Drakes, Frank Kennedy Jr. and John Frederick will presided. 
Burial followed at Pine Crest Cemetery.
   Mr. Autry was educated at Lanier and Lanett High schools. He was a carpenter 
by trade.
   Mr. Autry leaves many loved ones to cherish his memories. They include: 
three children, Jamacia of Atlanta, Tavares of LaFayette and TeJah of West 
Point, Ga.; four grandchildren; his mother, Catherine Johnson Autry of Lanett; 
six brothers, Robert Lee Autry of Oakland, Calif., Charles Autry, the Rev. 
Leonard Autry and Michael Autry of Lanett, Donald Autry of Roanoke, and Maurice 
Autry of Carrollton, Va.; one sister, Loretta Walton of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a 
special friend, Dorothy Brooks of West Point; three aunts, many nephews, 
nieces, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Autry; 
and two brothers, Thomas and Ralph Autry.

Fred H. Moses

   (PENSACOLA, Fla.) Fred Moses, 81, of Pensacola, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 5, 
2007, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
   Born in Pulaski, Tenn., on Feb. 15, 1926, he had been a resident of 
Pensacola for 50 years. He was an army veteran of the Korean War and an 
employee of Wesley's Refrigeration for 38 years. Fred loved the outdoors and 
was blessed with a green thumb. One of his greatest pleasures was being Mr. 
Fix It.
   He is survived by his best friend and wife of 49 years, Ann; his daughter, 
Beth Brown of Cantonment, Fla.; his son, Dennis Moses of Kempner, Texas; six 
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mary Durett of Galveston, 
Texas, and Mildred Noles of Corpus Christi, Texas; his brother, Jimmy Moses of 
Lexington, S.C.; and a special sister-in-law, Eloree Moses of Wedowee.
   Services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Faith Chapel Funeral Home 
North with the Rev. Teresa Leifur officiating. Interment will follow at Eastern 
Gate Cemetery.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Bobby Wayne Smith, 62, of Roanoke were Sunday, Aug.

Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Smith died Friday, Aug. 3, at his home.
   Survivors include a brother, Ray Smith of Newnan, Ga.; two stepdaughters, 
Marsha Fisher of Roanoke and Dianne Gooden of Wadley; and a stepson, Terry 
Green of Auburn.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Smith was born Dec. 14, 1944, son 
of Charlie and Oma Moore Smith. He was a self-employed painter.

Brandon Leslie Etheridge

   (ROANOKE) Brandon Leslie Etheridge, 24, of Roanoke died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 
2007.
   Survivors include his wife, Amanda Royster Etheridge of Roanoke; two 
daughters, Rachel and Ocean Etheridge of Roanoke; his parents, David and Debra 
Etheridge of Five Points; his paternal grandmother, Carolyn Etheridge of Five 
Points; his maternal grandfather, Gerald Myers of Arizona; and one brother, 
Travis Etheridge of Five Points.
   Mr. Etheridge was born July 4, 1983, and worked at SFC in Lanett.

Elma Knight

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Mrs. Elma Knight, 93, of Alexander City, died Tuesday, July 
31, 2007, at Chapman Healthcare Center.
   Services will be held Friday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Radney 
Funeral Home in Alexander City with the Revs. Joe Mallory and George Stewart 
officiating. Graveside services will follow in Hillview Memorial Park.

   Mrs. Knight was born Jan. 26, 1914, to Henry and Salley Kirk at Sikesville 
in Clay County. She was the oldest living member of Mt. Gilead Methodist 
Church, where she had been a member for 85 years. Mrs. Knight was the last 
survivor of 13 children. She had a strong love for Mt. Gilead Church and its 
members. Mrs. Knight taught Sunday school and was church treasurer for many 
years. The Mt. Gilead homecoming that was on the fourth Sunday in May was a 
great event in her life each year. Mrs. Knight was a floor lady at Clegg 
Manufacturing Company at Wadley. She retired from West Point Pepperell at 
Lanett. Mrs. Knight was an excellent cook with her specialties being fried 
chicken, fried pies and apple custards. She always enjoyed feeding her family 
and any visitors who might come by.
   She is survived by her sons, Earlie Knight Jr. Of Alexander City and Nelson 
Knight of Louisville, Ky.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She 
was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Earlie Knight Sr.

   Mrs. Jordan died Thursday, Aug. 2, at Cleburne County Nursing Home.
   Mrs. Jordan is survived by three daughters, Melissa Blalock and Mary Jordan-
Smith of Wedowee and Melba Tingle of Birmingham; two sons, Felix Jordan of 
Cartersville and Richard Jordan of Tarrant; one sister, Christine Yarbrough of 
Delta; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

   Mrs. Jordan was born July 12, 1929, daughter of Jasper and Cora Sellers 
Ball. She was a member of Zion Church of God and a homemaker. Mrs. Jordan was

Charles Jordan; and several brothers and sisters.

   She was born Aug. 15, 1988 in Carrollton.

father and stepmother, Marcus and Michelle Glenn; sisters, Jessica Smith of 
Woodland, Jasmine Glenn of Bowdon, Ga., and Brittany Dumas and LaRissa Glenn of 
Carrollton; brothers, Ivan Glenn of Bowdon, Markael Glenn and Jamal Dumas of 
Carrollton and Michael Thomas of Franklin, Ga.; grandmothers, Bernice Goodwin

Mae Bell Thompson

   (WELCH) Mae Bell Thompson, 85, of the Welch community died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 
2007, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Services were at Canaan Baptist Church, Welch, on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 1 
p.m., with the Rev. R.L. Heflin officiating. Interment was in the church 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Thompson was born June 17, 1922, in Chambers County to the late John 
Wesley and Mattie Lizzie Jackson. She was employed by Randolph County Hospital 
for many years in the housekeeping department. Mrs. Thompson was a member of 
Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in LaFayette, where she served as a member 
of the choir, the missionary society and the culinary department. She was a 
member of the Lily White Chapter #352 O.E.S. for several years. She was 
preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. Roy Lee Thompson.
   Surviving are two sons, Huey Lee Thompson of Huntsville and Cleophis 
Thompson of Ft. Washington, Md.; 19 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 34 
great-great-grandchildren; one special great-granddaughter and caregiver, 
Chinea Boyd of LaGrange; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other 
relatives, friends and neighbors.

   Mr. Wright is survived by two daughters, Tonia Zimmerman of Toledo, Ohio, 
and Kristi Wright of Fort Worth, Texas; two sons, David Wright of Wedowee and 
Wesley Wright of Heflin; two grandsons; one sister, Sarah Petty of Wedowee; and 
one brother, Donald Wright of Wedowee.
   Mr. Wright was born Oct. 6, 1946, son of Comer and Una Clyde Foster Wright.

James Frank Phillips

   (ROANOKE) Services for James Frank Phillips, 69, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
Aug. 21, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Roanoke First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry 
Armstrong and the Rev. Phil Russell officiating. Burial followed at Cedarwood 
Cemetery. Mr. Phillips died Sunday, Aug. 19, at Randolph Medial Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Sarah Ellen Barron Phillips of Roanoke; two 
daughters, Mendy Phillips Cobb of Maryville, Tenn., and Kara Phillips Hall of 
Wadley; two sons, Rich Phillips and Drew Phillips of Roanoke; two sisters, Jane 
Cato of Roanoke and Mary Ann Vann of Phenix City; a brother, Wyner Phillips of 
Wadley; and three grandsons. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents

   A Roanoke native, Mr. Phillips was born Jan. 23, 1938, son of J.P. and Mary 
Will Chase Phillips. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke, where he 
was a deacon; a member of the Board of Directors of First Bank of Wadley; 
chairman of Randolph County Water Board; and president of Mid-South Hardware 
Association. He was appointed to the State Association of Soil Conservation 
District and served 25 years.  He was a member of the Roanoke Rotary Club for 
48 years and a Paul Harris Fellow. He worked for Phillips Brothers Hardware in 
Roanoke for more than 50 years. After he retired, he continued farming and 
raising cattle. Memorabilia from the past was his passion. He was a graduate of 
the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

Ralph Leroy Atkins

   (LANETT) Ralph Leroy Atkins, 62, of Lanett died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007 at his 
home.
   Mr. Atkins was born Feb. 14, 1945, in Grant County, Ind., son of Virginia 
Evelyn Brown Atkins and the late Omer Jefferson Atkins. He had lived in 
LaGrange, Ga., for 18 years before moving to Lanett four years ago. He was a 
member of Lanett Nazarene Church. He was employed with A&S Steel Buildings as 
an estimator before retiring. Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by a sister, 
Beverly Atkins.
   Survivors in addition to his mother, Virginia Atkins of Marion, Ind., 
include his wife, Susan Atkins of Lanett; a daughter, Andrea Henderson of 
LaGrange; a son, Mike Atkins of Wadley; two sisters, Valeria Snyder and Donna 
Brookshire of Marion, Ind.; a brother, Ed Atkins of Marion; seven 
grandchildren; and a close friend, Larry Tankersley.

Joe B. May

   (HUNTSVILLE) Joe B. May, 82, of Huntsville died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007.
   Mr. May was a retired civil servant. He was an Auburn graduate and later 
received a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma. He served in World 
War II as a gunner on a B-24, farmed, taught school and coached basketball in 
Roanoke before coming to Huntsville in 1958. He worked as a procurement analyst 
for MICOM and Safeguard (missile defense) from 1958 until 1986 and then for 
Colsa until 1991. He was a member of Twickenham Church of Christ.
   Survivors include his wife, Jewel W. May; a son, Stephen May of Huntsville; 
a daughter, Brenda Demmi of Ocala, Fla.; two grandsons; two granddaughters; two 
brothers, Fred May of Roanoke and Grantt May of Valley; two sisters, Loyette 
Hester Mount of West Point, Ga., and Lucille Henderson of Hendersonville, N.C.; 
several nieces, nephews and cousins and lots of friends.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Jane Wortman Hill, 65, of Wedowee were Sunday, Aug. 
19, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rick Mead 
officiating.  Burial followed in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Hill died Thursday, Aug. 16, at Wedowee Hospital.
   The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the 
funeral home.
   Mrs. Hill is survived by her husband, Douglas Jackie Hill of Wedowee; one 
daughter, Pamela Murphree of Shelby, N.C.; one son, Jeffrey A. Smith of 
Wedowee; one stepson, Jeremy Hill of Roanoke; one brother, Richard Wortman of 
Burlington, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jeremy Hill, Seth Morrow, Drew Mercer, Corey Smith, Storm 
Smith and Heath Hill.
   Mrs. Hill was born Oct. 25, 1941, daughter of Guy H. and Marie Howell 
Wortman. She was a member of Carpenter's Grove Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C., 
and was retired from Ava Mills. Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by her parents.

   (NEWELL) Services for Ruby Jane Messer Cofield, 70, of Newell will be

   Mrs. Cofield died Monday, Aug. 20, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical 
Center, Anniston.
   Mrs. Cofield is survived by her husband, Edward C., Cofield of Newell; one 
daughter, Kim Mack of Mapleton, Ga.; one son, Ferrell Cofield of Newell; three 
grandchildren; one brother, James Messer of LaGrange, Ga.; and a special 
friend, Hester Sims.
   Pallbearers were Bobby Cofield, Billy Cofield, Richard Craft, Wayne 
Spradlin, Billy Edwards and Wayne Wortham.
   Mrs. Cofield was born May 28, 1937, daughter of Thomas Woodrow and Hattie 
Kitchens Messer. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and had retired as a 
supply clerk for Anniston Army Depot. Mrs. Cofield was preceded in death by two 
sons, Phillip Wayne Cofield and Randell Paul Cofield; her mother, Hattie 
Kitchens Messer; her father, Thomas Woodrow Messer; and one sister, Freddie Sue 
Gibbs.

   (WADLEY) Jimmy Lee Vaughn, 68, of Wadley died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, at 
East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   Services were at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wadley on Monday, Aug. 20, 
at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Cornelius Reese Jr. officiating. Interment was in the 
church cemetery.
   Surviving are his wife, Thelma Vaughn; his mother, Pearlie Momern; two sons, 
Tremayne Vaughn and Jarvis Wilkes; four stepsons, Tony Spradlin, Howard Weaver,

   (NEWELL) Services for Divie P. Lipham, 87, of Newell were Saturday, Aug. 18,

Mausoleum at 11:30 a.m.
   Mrs. Lipham died Thursday, Aug. 16, at Clay County Hospital.
   Mrs. Lipham is survived by one brother, Bud Phillips of Griffin, Ga.; and a 
number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lipham was preceded in death by her husband, 
Joe Lee Lipham; five sisters, Betty and Kate Mullally, Katherine Hanson, 
Margaret Gamble and Odesia Bentley; and three brothers, John, Cecil and Cleve 
Phillips.

   Mrs. Lipham was born March 4, 1920, the daughter of Forney and Texanna 
Pruitt Phillips. She had worked at Anniston Army Depot in shipping and 
receiving.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Gerald Wayne Harper, 66, of Roanoke were held Friday,

   Mr. Harper died Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Randolph Medical Center.

John Frank Molden

   (MARIETTA, Ga.) John Frank Molden, 57, of Marietta, Ga., died Saturday, Aug. 
25, 2007, at his home.
   Services will be Thursday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m. at Canaan Shining Light 
Baptist Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. A.J. Sims officiating. Burial will be in 
the church cemetery.
   Survivors include two sons, Terrance Molden of Wedowee and Calvin Molden of 
Dayton, Ohio; and three brothers, John Molden of West Chester, Ohio, James 
Molden of Wadley and Benny Molden of Atlanta. He was preceded in death by a 
son, Keith Molden; and three sisters, Josephine McGahee, Mae Sims and Betty 
Jean Lancaster.
   Public viewing will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on 
Wednesday. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.

Marilyn G. Roberts

   (WEDOWEE) Marilyn Gail Roberts, 67, of Wedowee, formerly of Powder Springs, 
Ga., died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007.
   Services were at noon on Monday, Aug. 27, at Macland Baptist Church in 
Powder Springs, with the Rev. Dan Houston and Dr. Richard Walker officiating. 
Interment was at Powder Springs Memorial Gardens.
   Mrs. Roberts moved to Wedowee eight years ago from Powder Springs. She was a 
homemaker, a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Ranburne, and a former 
member of Macland Baptist Church.
   She is survived by her husband, James J.R. Roberts of Wedowee; daughters 
Tracy Lewis and Robin Sheffield of Powder Springs; brother Chief David Hilton 
of Austell, Ga.; and two grandsons.

B.B. Simpson

   (WOODLAND) B.B. Simpson, 74, of Woodland died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, in 
Piedmont.
   He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Audrey McFry Simpson; two daughters, 
Tina Montgomery of Griffin, Ga., and Angela Garrison of Frederick, Md.; two 
sons, J.B. Simpson of Northport and Bruce Simpson of Shalimar, Fla.; five 
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his mother, Lola Simpson of Woodland; and 
one sister, Barbara Turner of Hartselle.
   Mr. Simpson was a Piedmont native and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a 
minister, missionary, schoolteacher, airplane pilot, inventor, paramedic, 
carpenter, electrician, heavy equipment operator and linguist. He had five 
college degrees and authored many books. He was preceded in death by his 
father, Clyde Simpson; one sister, Sue Lawler; and one brother, Charles Simpson.

for West Point Stevens and Dunson Mills. Mrs. Clack is preceded in death by her 
husband, Robert Lee Clack; her parents; one sister, Jenny Sue Campbell; three 
brothers, Johnny, Emory and Matt Clack; and one daughter, Tonita Faith Maddux.

   Mrs. Lebert was born Nov. 28, 1913, daughter of J.J. and Florence Bennett 
McCurry. She was of the Catholic faith and had been a homemaker. Mrs. Lebert

M.B. Harris Jr.

   (BOWDON, Ga.) M.B. Harris Jr., 64, of Bowdon, Ga., died Saturday, Aug. 18, 
2007, at his residence.
   He was born in Randolph County, Ala., on Oct. 14, 1942, the son of the late 
Marion Bradford Harris Sr. and Eva Wilson Harris. He was a member of Sardis 
Baptist Church and was a retired carpenter with Harris Cornice and Siding.
   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, 
Edward Harris, Frank Harris, Dean Harris, Hulett Harris and John D. Harris; and 
three half-sisters, Velma Smith, Lucy Burke and Boyce Cofield.
   Survivors include his wife, Willie Mae Taylor Harris of Bowdon; a son, Gary 
Harris, of Salyer, Calif.; a daughter, Kathy Garrett of Bowdon; four 
grandchildren; and one sister, Sara Hendley of Roanoke.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. at Rainwater Funeral Home 
Chapel with the Revs. Darnell Teal, Jimmy Palmer and Donald Leggett

John Frank Lewis

   (BREMEN, Ga.) John Frank Lewis, 81, of Bremen, Ga., died Aug. 18, 2007, at 
Tanner Medical Center.
    Mr. Lewis was born on Sept. 11, 1925, in Haralson County, Ga., the son of 
the late Lomie Lewis and Mattie Swann Harrison. He was formerly employed as a 
truck driver and in the construction field. He was a veteran of the United 
States Marines having served in World War II. In addition to his parents, he 
was also preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Posey Lewis; a sister, Annie 
Lewis; and a brother, James Lewis.
   Survivors include his daughter, Gail Willis of Carrollton; a brother, Hugh 
Lewis, of Wedowee; and two grandchildren.
   Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Hightower 
Funeral Home in Bremen officiated by the Rev. Buddy Gentry. Music was provided 
by Maxine House. Wayne Posey, Max Alexander and Jason Willis served as

was retired from West Point Stevens. Mrs. Rainwater was preceded in death by

   (ELYRIA, Ohio) Anner C. Anna Little, 74, of Elyria, Ohio, died Friday, 
Aug. 24, 2007, in Wesleyan Village of Elyria following a long illness.
   Mrs. Little was born in LaFayette, Ala., coming to Elyria in 1953. She was a 
homemaker and had worked at Elyria Country Club where she was in the kitchen 
department and was employed with the Elyria Maintenance Dept.
   Mrs. Little was a member of Woodford Avenue Church of God In Christ of 
Elyria, where she served on the usher board, was secretary of the Sunday school 
and was in charge of the maintenance of the church. She enjoyed traveling, good 
gospel singing and reading her Bible.
   She is survived by her daughter, Joeann Lloyd of Fayette, Ala.; a son, 
Richard Little of Elyria; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters 
Annie Ruth Henderson of Elyria, Carrie L. Watson, Georgia Little, Doris Little 
and Ester Little, all of LaFayette, Fannie Mae Daniel and Patricia A. Howell of 
Atlanta, Louise Bell of Roanoke and Dollie M. Allen of Opelika; brothers 
Lindsey Little Jr. of Atlanta and Eddie F. Little and Robert C. Little of 
Valley; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, Lindsey and Sallie Little; and

Bernice Irene Lovvorn Roberts

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Bernice Irene Lovvorn Roberts, 91, of Carrollton, Ga., 
died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007.
   Mrs. Roberts was born May 26, 1916, in Randolph County, Ala., to the late 
John William Lovvorn, who died during the 1918 influenza pandemic, and Della 
Cassel Lovvorn, who died in 1978.
   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul 
Wilson Roberts, when he passed away in 1976; three sisters, Cliffie Jackson 
Wall, Eunice Lovvorn McCollum, Eula Mae Lovvorn Ballenger; four brothers, 
Herman Cornelius Lovvorn, Dewey Franklin Lovvorn, Spencer Sanford Lovvorn and 
William Bernard Lovvorn, who died in infancy. Also preceding her in death were 
her daughters, Jean Roberts Daniel, who passed away in 2000, and Shirley 
Roberts Hutcheson in 2004. She was also predeceased by a son-in-law and a 
grandson, Ricky Daniel.
   Mrs. Roberts is survived by her son, Johnny Roberts of Bowdon, Ga.; 
daughter, Eleanor Jackson, of Duluth, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; a host of great-
grandchildren and nieces and nephews in several states.
   Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, at 3 p.m. at 
Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Talmadge Chandler officiating.
