OBITUARIES:

Douglas Vas D.V.' Benefield

   (ROANOKE) Services for Douglas Vas D.V. Benefield, 89, of Roanoke were at 
10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at Quattlebaum Funeral Home with the Rev. 
Stanley Yarbrough officiating. Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Benefield, who was born April 4, 1917, to the late Lawson D. and Bertha 
Wilson Benefield in Randolph County, died Nov. 29. He served in the U.S. Coast 
Guard during World War II, having his ship sunk by a Japanese torpedo. Prior to 
the war, he was stationed with the Coast Guard in Woodshole, Mass., where he 
met his wife. He had been a Mason for more than 50 years.
   Survivors include his daughter, Linda Thomas of Opelika; a son, John 
Benefield of Middletown, Conn.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 
two sisters, Pauline Jackson of LaGrange, Ga., and Orene Crenshaw of Wedowee; 
three brothers, Ralph Benefield and Donald Benefield of Wedowee and E.Z. 
Benefield of Lineville; along with a host of nieces, nephews and other 
relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Lorena, in 1999.

Virginia Borders Mitchum

   (ROANOKE) Services for Virginia Borders Mitchum, 78, of the Doublehead 
community, will be Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. David Howard and the Rev. Phil Russell officiating. 
Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Mitchum was born June 12, 1928, daughter of Essie and Joe Ben Borders. 
She died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at her home after an extended illness. She was 
an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke, where she 
prepared meals for Wednesday night services for many years. She was a member of 
the Bible Learners Sunday School Class and served as a teacher in the Youth 
Sunday School Department for 7th-12th grade girls for several years. She also 
served as a Pink Lady volunteer at Randolph Medical Center. She graduated from 
Handley High School in 1946 and was a homemaker.
   Mrs. Mitchum was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Mitchum.
   Survivors include her three daughters and their husbands: Jean and John 
Webb, Marsha and Jim Darden, and Teri and Johnny Tennant; one brother, Joe 
Borders; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Johnny Tennant, Will Tennant, John Webb, Jim Darden, 
Mitch Darden, Clint Daniel, Cal Green and Jerry Mitchum.

Barbara Joan Bradshaw Robinson

   (MELBOURNE, Fla.) Barbara Joan Bradshaw Robinson, 69, of Melbourne, Fla., 
died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006.
   Services were Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Florida Memorial Gardens, Rockledge, with 
the Rev. Stuart Rowan officiating. Interment followed at Florida Memorial 
Gardens Mausoleum.
   Mrs. Robinson was born Oct. 3, 1937, in Denver, Colo. Her family moved from 
Denver to Roanoke in 1950, and she graduated from Handley High School in 1955. 
She later received a degree in journalism from the Colorado Women's College in 
Denver and was an accomplished artist, poet, and author of children's stories.
   She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Fetner Oscar Robinson of 
Melbourne (formerly of Roanoke); a son, Gregory Michael Robinson of Satellite 
Beach, Fla.; a brother, Robert G. Bradshaw Jr. of Dadeville; a sister, Sandra 
Bradshaw Miller of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two granddaughters. Mrs. 
Robinson was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Gibson Bradshaw and Merle 
Griffin Bradshaw; and by her grandson, Travis Michael Robinson.
   Memorial donations may be made to the Brevard Library Foundation, 219 Indian 
River Dr., Cocoa, FL 32922.

Frances Parmer

   (ROOPVILLE, Ga.) Frances Parmer, 70, of Roopville, Ga., died Monday, Dec. 4, 
2006.
   She was born in Carroll County, Ga., June 12, 1936, daughter of the late 
Ezra Carl and Effie Lou Akins Bivins. She was a member of Sandy Flat Baptist 
Church and was a retired employee of LaMar Manufacturing Co.
   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, 
Rev. Grady Myrl Bivins, J.B. Bivins and Ezra Carl Bivins Jr., and three sisters 
Jerlene Bivins, Lurlene Bivins and Betty Bivins.
   Survivors include her husband, the Rev. L.G. Parmer of Roopville; a son, 
Jerry Parmer of Carrollton, Ga.; two daughters, Pamela Malone of Roopville and 
Rhonda Rose of Lilburn, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Tokay 
Shumake of Rome, Ga., Virginia Dover of Rockmart, Ga., and Loutrell Prince of 
Carrollton.
   Services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 3 p.m. at Rainwater Funeral Home 
Chapel, with the Rev. Jimmy Palmer and the Rev. Ridley Parmer officiating. 
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Interment will follow in Carroll 
Memory Gardens with the Rev. Charles Chambers in charge of graveside services.

Dolly Brown

   (LANETT) Dolly Brown, 72, of Lanett died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2006, at her 
residence.
   Services were Saturday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. at Shawmut Church of the Nazarene 
in Valley with the Rev. Jimmy Blackman officiating. Burial followed at 
Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.
   Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband of 53 years, Clines Brown; her 
daughter, Carolyn Foster; her son, Kenneth Brown; three grandchildren; three 
great-grandchildren; five brothers, John Bradley, Horace Bradley, Mack Bradley, 
Bill Bradley and Clyde Brown; one sister, Polly Martin; and a large extended 
family of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
   Born Feb. 5, 1934, in Randolph County, Mrs. Brown was the daughter of the 
late Flora White Bradley and Bill Bradley. Mrs. Brown was a retired employee of 
WestPoint Stevens Lanett Mill.    She was a member of Shawmut Church of the 
Nazarene.

Barbara Fincher Blackmon

   (ROANOKE) Services for Barbara Fincher Blackmon, 63, of Roanoke, will be 
Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Mickey Skipper officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Blackmon died Sunday, Dec. 10, at her home.
   Survivors include four daughters, Karen Cummings of Auburn, Pamela Barber of 
Franklin, Ga., Patricia Herren of Woodland and Kimberly Shelnutt of Woodland; 
three sisters, Vernette Smith, Linda Thomas and Norma Jean Farrar of Roanoke; 
one brother, Donnie Fincher of Opelika; seven grandchildren; and several nieces 
and nephews.
   Pallbearers will be David Cummings, Steve Cummings, Ronnie Smith, Johnny 
Smith, Daryl Thomas, Kevin Cummings, Jeremy Cummings and Tyler Murphy.
   Mrs. Blackmon was born Nov. 24, 1943, daughter of James Barner and Artie Lou 
Brown Fincher. She was a long-time member of Handley Avenue Church of God and 
was a certified nursing assistant for Traylor Nursing Home. Barbara knew and 
loved Jesus and demonstrated this love toward her children, grandchildren, 
family and friends. Mrs. Blackmon is preceded in death by her husband, B.J. 
Blackmon; one sister, Voncile Cummings; and her parents.

Frances Pamelia Pam' McManus Hawkins

   (ROANOKE) Pam McManus Hawkins, 61, of Roanoke died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, of 
natural causes at her home.
   Services were held in Woodland on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek 
United Methodist Church, where Pam was laid to rest. The services were 
conducted by Max Cummings. Pallbearers were Danny Brady, Lenn McManus, Roger 
McManus, Alien McManus, Codie McManus, Gerald McManus, Hobart McManus and Ed 
McManus.
   Pam is survived by a son, Scott Cummings of Auburn; a daughter, Veronica 
Lovvorn of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Charles McManus of Woodland; four 
grandchildren; two nephews and one niece.
   Born Dec. 2, 1945, Pam was the daughter of the late Bernice and Lowell 
McManus of Woodland. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of 
Roanoke and was a 1963 graduate of Woodland High School and a graduate of 
Southern Union State Community College (A.S.) and Auburn University (B.S. and 
M.Ed.). Since 1992, she taught business education at West Georgia Technical 
College in LaGrange, where her efforts won her recognition and awards at the 
college, state and national levels.  In 2006, she received the National Star of 
Education Award in Washington, D.C. Pam actively served on the state and 
national boards of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Phi Beta 
Lambda (PBL). She was honored as the Georgia PBL Adviser of the Year, and she 
served as Georgia's PBL Foundation president and as the state executive 
director. Pam believed in the power of education to uplift and improve, and her 
teaching and advising leave behind a legacy of students whose lives she helped 
make better. Pam enjoyed flowers and gardening, but her most ardent passion was 
spending time with her family. She was a devoted mother and a loving 
grandmother.

Mahee Carter Wilkinson

   (LANETT) Mahee Carter Wilkinson, 83, of Lanett died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, 
at the Brian Center in LaGrange, Ga.
   Services were Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral 
Home in Valley with the Revs. Eddie Striblin and Jim Luttrell officiating. 
Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett.
Mrs. Wilkinson is survived by four children, Wayne Wilkinson of McDonough, Ga., 
Pamela Gunter of Lanett, Timothy Wilkinson of Birmingham and Darryl Wilkinson 
of Sylvania, Ga.; one sister, Hazel Pitts of West Point, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; 
and 12 great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Wilkinson was preceded in death by her 
husband, Luther Wilkinson; and her daughter, Ann Wilkinson.
   Born May 6, 1923, in Roanoke, Mrs. Wilkinson was the daughter of the late 
Heltie Winslett Carter and Paris Carter. She had been a homemaker. She was a 
member of Community Chapel Church of God.

John C. Sharp

   (LINCOLN) Services for John C. Sharp, 88, were Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at 11 
a.m. at Lincoln Church of Christ with Mark Martin and Hal Simpson officiating. 
Graveside services were Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Pine Hill Cemetery in Randolph 
County.
Mr. Sharp died Saturday, Dec. 9, at Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham.
   He is survived by a son, Gene S. Sharp, and his wife, Sandra, of Lincoln; a 
sister, Mary Jo Korreckt of Lincoln; and a grandson.
   Pallbearers were Mike Stedham, Lathem Korreckt, Adam Korreckt, John McDaris, 
Kenneth Pace, Bobby Brannon and Cory Korreckt. Honorary pallbearers were Mitch 
McDaniel and Shane Gunter.
   Mr. Sharp had resided in Lincoln most of his life and was a graduate of 
Lincoln High School. He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy and was 
stationed on the U.S.S. Talladega and the U.S.S. General Mitchell. He was 
retired from Newberry Foundry in Talladega and was preceded in death by his 
wife, Mattie Neva Sharp.
   Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Lincoln Church of

   (ROANOKE) Services for Earline Norred Arnett, 79, of Roanoke were Thursday, 
Dec. 7, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stanley 
Yarbrough and the Rev. Harold Bonner officiating. Burial followed in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Arnett died Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Traylor Nursing Home.
   Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Crockett and Linda Brown of 
Roanoke; three sons, Roger, Stanley and Dennis Arnett all of Roanoke; one 
sister, Bovine Fisher of Roanoke; three brothers, Buck, Ronnie and Larry Joe 
Norred of Roanoke; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Justin Arnett, Alan Crockett, Brian Brown, Nicholas Arnett, 
Russell Norred and Fred Norred.
   Mrs. Arnett was born Dec. 14, 1926, daughter of Dalph and Flosie Truitt 
Norred. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and had worked at Palm 
Beach Company and Playtex. Mrs. Arnett is preceded in death by her husband, 
James Hilliard Arnett.

Sybil Twiggs

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Sybil Twiggs, 76, of Roanoke, formerly of 
LaGrange, Ga., were Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Randolph Memory 
Gardens, with the Rev. Phillip Russell officiating.
   Mrs. Twiggs died Sunday, Dec. 10, at University Hospital in Birmingham.
   Survivors include her husband, Murlan Twiggs of Roanoke; one son, Jerry 
Twiggs of Bradenton, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
   A Rock Mills native, Mrs. Twiggs was born Aug. 21, 1930, daughter of Arthur 
and Ciddie Lou Chastain Towler. The family had made their home in LaGrange from 
1972 until 2001 when they returned to Randolph County. She was a member of 
Roanoke First Baptist Church and had worked as an L.P.N. with Randolph County 
Hospital and Traylor Nursing Home.

Roger Baye

   (WOODBINE, Ga.) Roger "Roger Dodger" Baye, 45, of Woodbine, Ga., formerly of 
Roanoke, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at the Camden hospital.
   He had been a resident of Woodbine for the past five years, having come from 
Fernandina Beach, Fla. He was a musician, having played the guitar and the 
drums since he was 3 years old.
   He is survived by his wife, Donna Baye of Woodbine; three daughters, Charity 
Baye of Fernandina Beach, Rachel Baye of Tampa, Fla., and Misty Morris of 
Daviston, Ala.; two sons, Elijah Baye of Woodbine and Isaac Baye of Almond, 
N.C.; a sister, April Olsen of Utica, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held Friday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at Edo Miller Camden 
Chapel.

Charlie Hugh Rice

   (JACKSONVILLE) Services for Charlie Hugh Rice, 76, of Jacksonville, formerly 
of Oxford, were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, in the chapel of Miller 
Funeral Home and Crematory with the Revs. Randy Hagan and Terry Bostick 
officiating.  Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville.
   Mr. Rice died Wednesday, Dec. 6,  at Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Survivors are his wife, Berneta Johnson Rice of Jacksonville; two sons, 
Bruce M. Rice and Dwight K. Rice of Oxford; one stepdaughter, Lynette King of 
Jacksonville; his mother, Ida Mae Rice of Lineville; one sister, Janice Barker 
of Woodland; three brothers, Emmitt Rice of Washington, Steve Rice of Lineville 
and Richard Rice of Barfield; three grandchildren; and one step-granddaughter.
   Pallbearers were Arnold Jackson, B.L. Brooks, Sherrill Dorsey, Ferrell 
Ingram, Brian Ashley and Michael Burke.
   Mr. Rice was a native of Clay County and a long-time resident of Oxford 
before moving to Jacksonville.  He retired from the Oxford City Board of 
Education as principal of Oxford Elementary School.  He was a member of the 
Weaver First Baptist Church and the Delta Masonic Lodge.  Mr. Rice was a Navy 
veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Demetrius Ray Daniel

   (WEDOWEE) Demetrius Ray Daniel, 45, of 10265 County Road 15, Wedowee, died 
Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston. 
Services will be Wednesday, Dec. 13, at noon at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 
with the Rev. William Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Stephen Mission 
Church Cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Miranda Daniel of Wedowee; his mother, Ethel 
Scales Houston of Wedowee; a son, Brian A. Daniel of Albany, Ga.; five 
daughters, Ashley M. Daniel of Huntsville, Tess Paige of Chicago, Ill., Megan 
D. Daniel of Opelika, Clarissa Atchinson of Oconee, Fla., and Martinique D. 
Daniel of Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepson, Latrell McGuire of Atlanta; a sister, 
Patricia Daniel of Chicago; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by a 
sister, Evelyn Daniel, and his father, Matthew Daniel.
   The body will be in the church one hour before the funeral.

   (NEWELL) Services for Doyle Gay New, 73, of Newell, will be Wednesday, Dec. 
13, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Craft and the 
Rev. Eugene Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. 
Mr. New died Monday, Dec. 11, at his home.
   Mr. New is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lena Craven New; one son, 
Donald New of Covington, Ga.; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two 
great-grandchildren; four sisters, Polly Logan of Riverside and Lillie New, 
Willene Horn and Ann New of Wedowee; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers will be Dobson Mathis, David Wesson, Neal Pinkard, Jacob Harper, 
Alvis Mitchell and Delmar Harmers. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl 
Huddieston, Herman Akins, Larry Smith, Eddie Cofield, James Pettus, Lawrence 
Buckhanna, Jeff Houston, Billy Cofield and Wayne Huddleston.
   Mr. New was born Aug. 26, 1933, son of Jessie and Amzie Daniel New. He was a 
member of Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church and had been a heavy 
equipment operator for Randolph County.    Mr. New served in the U.S. Navy 
during the Korean War. He is preceded in death by his parents.    Flowers will 
be accepted or donations may be made to The American Cancer Society.

Hayes Eulon H.E.' Butts

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Hayes Eulon H.E. Butts, 76, of LaGrange, Ga., died Monday, 
Dec. 18, 2006, at his home.
   Mr. Butts was born Nov 27, 1930, in Coffee County, Ala., son of the late 
Earlie Butts and Vedie Adkins Butts. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, and was retired from West Point Pepperell. In addition to his parents, 
Mr. Butts was preceded in death by three brothers, Macon Butts, Jack Butts and 
Laurie Butts; and a beloved grandson, David Kyle Lester.
   Survivors include his wife, Willodean Butts; two daughters, Jackie Entrekin 
and Marsha Thomason; one son, Ronnie Butts; nine grandchildren; 13 great-
grandchildren; two brothers, Clearance Butts and William Butts; one sister, 
Agnus Allen; and a host of family and friends.
   Services will be at 1 p.m. CST on Thursday, Dec. 21, at Faith Baptist Church 
in Roanoke, with the Revs. Carl Partain, Tommy Gene Young and Scott Whaley 
officiating. Burial will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange.
   The family will be at the home of Willodean Butts and will receive friends 
at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. EST.

Jacqueline Denise Heard-Potter

   (PALMETTO, Ga.) Jacqueline Denise Heard-Potter, 21, of Palmetto, Ga., died 
Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services will be Saturday, Dec. 23, at 1 p.m. at Pine Grove United Methodist 
Church, White Plains, with the Rev. Cecelia Broom and the Rev. Shannon Allison 
officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include her parents, Ralph and Judy Potter of Palmetto; a 
daughter, Courtney Denise Heard of Palmetto; a sister, Beverly Heard of Newnan, 
Ga.; a brother, Ralph Potter Jr. of Palmetto; eight special aunts and two 
special uncles.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Heard.
   Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service from 10 a.m. until 
8 p.m. on Friday.     The body will be placed in the church one hour before the 
funeral.

Billy Jackson and the Rev. Tony Morris officiating. Burial followed in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Ustick died Saturday, Dec. 16, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Ustick is survived by two daughters, Vivian Elders of Woodland and 
Annie Williamson of Fairburn, Ga.; three sons-in-law; one sister, Ethel Bradley 
of Aberdeen, Miss.; one brother, Herbert Cook of Aberdeen; six grandchildren; 
and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tony Williamson, Travis Williamson, Alan Ford, Blake Ford, 
Cliff Wall, J.T. Elders and Mark Elders.
   Mrs. Ustick was born Aug. 9, 1921, daughter of Jim Lee and Annie Maye Cook. 
She was a member of Providence Baptist Church and had been a clothing buyer for 
Muses Shop. Mrs. Ustick was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Ustick; 
one daughter, Jo Evelyn Wall; and one son, Richard Bowerman.

Danny Tubby' Whaley

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Danny Tubby Whaley, 57, of Carrollton, Ga., died 
Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006.
   Mr. Whaley was born in Roanoke on July 24, 1949, son of the late Lon Paschal 
Whaley and Irene Burke Hunt.
   He was retired after 14 years with the City of Carrollton Water Department

faith. Mr. Whaley served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
   Survivors include his wife, Dorothy T. Whaley; two sons, Joey Whaley of 
Roanoke and Justin Whaley of Woodland; two granddaughters; stepchildren, Jammie 
Rampy of Woodland, Tony Elmore of Weaver, Brian Elmore of Fruithurst and Tommy 
Elmore of Greenwood, Ark; seven step-grandchildren; a brother, Larry Whaley of 
Roanoke; and a sister, Diane Jones of South Carolina. Besides his parents he 
was preceded in death by his stepfather, Joe Bob Hunt.
   Services were Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Almon Funeral 
Home with associate pastor Adam Lee officiating.

Owens of Roanoke, Barbara Beatty of Middletown, N.Y, and Stella Marshall of 
Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Carl Austin of Roanoke and Calvert Austin of 
LaGrange, Ga.; a sister, Alberta Wood of Anniston; two stepdaughters, Betty 
Gunn and Yvetta Gunn of Atlanta; 45 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; 47

   Mr. Briskey is survived by one daughter, LaTasha Heard of LaFayette; one

   Mr. Briskey was born Dec. 5, 1960, in Chambers County. He was a member of

Mabel W. Heard

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Mabel W. Heard, 97, of Carrollton, Ga., died Monday, Dec. 
18, 2006, in a local hospital.
   Mrs. Heard was born March 3, 1909, in Heard County, Ga., to the late Dr. 
A.G. Wortham and Ora Lee Miller Wortham. She was a faithful member of Beulah 
Baptist Church and a long-time member of the Bremen Chapter, Order of the 
Eastern Star.
   Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. C.S. 
Heard, who served several local churches as pastor; a son, James Lee Heard; and 
two brothers and a sister. Survivors include three sons, Philip Heard of 
Carrollton, Wortham Heard of Titusville, Fla., and Charles L. Heard of Helotes, 
Texas; one sister, Sara Yeats of Villa Rica, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-
grandchildren.
   Services will be Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. at Martin & Hightower 
Heritage Chapel, Carrollton, with the Rev. Anthony Puckett, the Rev. Shane 
Waldrep, and her grandson, the Rev. Matthew Heard officiating. Music will be by 
the Beulah Baptist Church Choir, who will be joined by convention singers, 
along with her granddaughters Beth Patterson and Jennifer Boyett accompanied by 
Patty Pritchard.

Thelma Luerene Miss' Ware Hill

   (DETROIT, Mich.) Thelma Luerene Miss Ware Hill, 56, died in Detroit, Mich.
   Mrs. Hill, daughter of Ethel H. Ware of LaGrange, Ga., and the late Mr. 
Zelma W. Ware was born July 24, 1950, in LaGrange, the youngest of their four 
children. Mrs. Hill graduated from Ethel W. Kight High School and attended 
college in Marquette, Mich. She was a member of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church, 
where she enjoyed singing in the choir. In 1999 Mrs. Hill made a strong 
recommitment to her faith in God, attending True Church House of Prayer to All 
Nations in Pontiac, Mich. She retired from General Motors after 30 years of 
service when her health began declining. She was a united in marriage to George 
Will [Hill] on May 29, 1976.
   Survivors in addition to her mother, include her loving and devoted husband 
of 30 years, George Hill; three daughters, Melanie Hill of LaGrange, Michelle 
Brown of Austell, Ga., and Monique Mabin of Kansas City, Mo.; a stepdaughter, 
June Spivey of Rockford, Ill.; a sister, Dorothy A. Ware of LaGrange; two 
brothers, George Frank Ware of Roanoke and William Ware of LaGrange; six 
grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Jane Perry McManus

   (WINSTON, Ga.) Jane Perry McManus, 72, of Winston, Ga., died on Tuesday, 
Dec. 12, 2006.
   She was born in Wedowee on June 28, 1934, to the late Thomas Andrew Perry 
and the late Maude Beck Perry. Mrs. McManus graduated from Randolph County High 
School, where she was the valedictorian of her class. She continued her 
education at Auburn University, where she received her bachelor's and master's 
degrees. Mrs. McManus was a high school science teacher in Heard County, Ga., 
and Douglas County, Ga., for 30 years. She was family oriented and enjoyed 
being a housemaker, mother and grandmother. Mrs. McManus was a member of the 
First United Methodist Church of Douglasville, Ga.
   Survivors include her husband, Garey McManus of Winston; two sons, Craig 
McManus of Winston and Jeff McManus of Oxford, Miss.; a daughter, Janet Russell 
of Newnan, Ga.; a brother, Bob Perry of Wedowee; and nine grandchildren.

   She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Harry Cowhick; and seven

   Mr. Fortson died Tuesday, Dec. 12, at his residence.
   He was born Jan. 6, 1936, in Turner County, Ga., to William Jasper Fortson

Church, a former resident of Atlanta and had worked at the Big Apple as stock 
clerk, in the steel mill and in construction. He enjoyed basket weaving, 
hunting and fishing.

   (LAFAYETTE) Ben Burton, 70, of LaFayette died Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at 
George H. Lanier Hospital, Valley.
   Mr. Burton was born in Chambers County on Feb. 22, 1936. He was a U.S. Army 
veteran and a retired timber cruiser. He was a member of LaFayette Heights 
Baptist Church.
   Services were at LaFayette Heights Baptist Church on Tuesday, Dec. 26, at 2

   Surviving are four children, Kathy Avsay of Birmingham, Benjy Burton of

James Snuggs Lane

   (ROANOKE) James Snuggs Lane, 87, of Roanoke died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, in 
Roanoke.
   Mr. Lane was the second of three sons born to Walter Thomas and Gena Snuggs 
Lane. He was born Nov. 14, 1919, in Roanoke and was a graduate of Handley High 
School and Lees-McCrae College, Banner Elk, N.C. A veteran of the U.S. Army Air 
Force during World War II, 1942-1946, he was an expert aerial gunnery 
instructor and saw service in the Pacific theater. He held membership in the 
American Legion and U.F.W.
   Active in many civic groups, he served terms as president of the Roanoke 
Livestock Association, Roanoke Junior Chamber of Commerce, Randolph County 
Hospital Board, City of Roanoke Development Board and Community Action Agency 
for Clay, Randolph and Tallapoosa Counties. He was a two-term member of the 
Roanoke City Council and a member of the Administrative Board and treasurer of 
First United Methodist Church of Roanoke. Mr. Lane had retired in 1986 as 
president of the Roanoke Wholesale Grocery Company, a family-owned business.
   Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Mitchell Lane; two 
daughters, Carol Lane Wood of Birmingham and Lucy Lane Hines of Brewton; four 
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his 
parents and two brothers, Dr. William Ferrell Lane and Dr. Hugh Gordon Lane.
   Members of the First United Methodist Church Men's Bible Class, of which he 
was a faithful and long-time member, served as honorary pallbearers.
   Services were held at First United Methodist Church of Roanoke on Saturday, 
Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Mann officiating. Lane Hines Woodke, 
granddaughter, read scripture. Burial followed at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Mr. Lane's grandsons, Jack W. Hines III, James Thomas 
Hines, Wiley Dennis Wood III and Brian Michael Woodke; cousin Wyatt Lane; and

William C. Pilgrim

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) William Carl Pilgrim, 80, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, at 
Hospice LaGrange.
   Mr. Pilgrim, born May 4, 1926, in Randolph County, Ala., was the son of the 
late Thomas Thad and Geniar Smith Pilgrim. He was a Korean veteran and a deacon 
at Wehadkee Baptist Church. He hunted, fished and rode up and down the road in 
his red Toyota pickup truck.
   Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Essie Simonton Pilgrim; two 
daughters, Ginny Sammons and Susan Gephardt; a son, Rev. Nick Pilgrim, all of 
LaGrange; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, in the Hunter-Allen-
Myhand chapel with the Rev. Olin McClain officiating. Interment will be in 
Wehadkee Baptist Church Cemetery. The Sons of Thunder Motorcycle Ministry will

Terry Gordon Henderson

   (ANNISTON) Terry Gordon Henderson, 49, of Anniston died Monday, Dec. 18, 
2006, at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital. Memorial services will be announced at 
a later date.
   Survivors include his wife, Kathy Whitlock Henderson of Anniston; three 
daughters, Jennifer Reeves and Jolene Henderson of Anniston and Terry Lynn Shaw 
of Maryland; one son, Michael Spears of Anniston; two sisters, Karen Tinnin of 
Houston, Texas, and Cheri Perry of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; one brother, John Koehler 
of Heflin; and ten grandchildren.
   Mr. Henderson was born in France on Feb. 23, 1957, son of Robert and Helen 
Joyce Ann Tanksley Henderson. He had served in the U.S. Army, been employed as 
an industrial electrician and was preceded in death by his parents.

Sadie Henry Clapp Rearden

   (WEST POINT, Ga.) Sadie Clapp Rearden, 92, of West Point, Ga., died Tuesday, 
Dec. 19, 2006, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   Services were Friday, Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. EST at First Baptist Church of 
West Point with Dr. Tom Tucker officiating. Burial followed at Marseilles 
Cemetery in West Point.
   Mrs. Rearden is survived by two daughters, Nan Huber of Huntsville and Ann 
Pearce of Charlotte, N.C.; one son, Paul Clapp of Valley; one sister, Marilena 
Willoughby of Smiths Station; one brother, James Henry of Birmingham; four 
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
   Born Sept. 11, 1914, in Randolph County, Mrs. Rearden was the daughter of 
the late Maggie Pittman Henry and the late Winston D. Henry. She was a retired 
social worker with the state of Georgia Department of Family and Children's 
Services. Mrs. Rearden had been a teacher at Gray Hill School and had trained 
as a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of First Baptist Church of West 
Point and the New Life Sunday School Class of the church.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of 
West Point, 301 E. 8th St., West Point, GA 31833.

JoAnne Knight Garrison

   (WEDOWEE) Services for JoAnne Knight Garrison, 74, of Wedowee will be 
Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Earl Rollins officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Garrison died Monday, Dec. 25, at Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, Ga.
   Mrs. Garrison is survivied [survived] by one son, Dennis Madaglia of Villa 
Rica, Ga.; two grandchildren; five sisters, Sue Grant of Woodland, Jane Baldwin 
of Franklin, Tenn., Patsy Cordell of Chattanooga, Tenn., Alice Stash of 
Carrollton, Ga., and Judy Damron of Arkansas; and one brother, George Knight of 
Port St. Joe, Fla.
   Pallbearers will be Mitch Madaglia, Pierce Baldwin, George Knight Jr., Joe 
LeSeure, Danny Stash, and Terry Lewis. Honorary pallbearer will be James Grant.
   Mrs. Garrison was born May 22, 1932, daughter of Ben and Maude Daniel 
Knight. She was a member of First Baptist of Wewahitchka, Fla., and was an 
owner and operator in the food service business. Mrs. Garrison was preceded in 
death by her parents and two sisters, Maggie Knight Watson and Betty Knight 
Samara.
