OBITUARIES:

Fredonia Hurd Marable

   (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) Services for Fredonia Hurd Marable of Nashville, Tenn., 
were Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at 7 p.m. at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church, with 
the Rev. William W. Easley Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Middle Tennessee 
Veterans Cemetery, Pegram, Tenn.
   Mrs. Marable died Thursday, Sept. 23, in Bordeaux Long Term Care Facility.
   Surviving are her husband, Rufus Marable; her son, Calvin Marable; three 
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Texanna Royston of 
Roanoke; three brothers-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
   Mrs. Marable, a native of Piqua, Ohio, was born Aug. 2 1924, daughter of 
Leroy and Nora Anna Hurd.  She was a member of the Greater Bethel A&M Church 
and had been employed with Randolph County Training School, Roanoke, The AME 
Sunday School Union Publishing House, and Tennessee State University in 
Nashville.  After retiring Mrs. Marable began working with their family owned 
business, Fast Copy Printers, in Nashville.
   Arrangements were by Terrell Broady Funeral Home, Nashville.

Wallace Hershel Moon

   (BIG SANDY, Texas) A graveside service for Wallace Hershel Moon, 65, of Big 
Sandy, Texas, formerly of Roanoke, was Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at 2 p.m. at 
Randolph Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Phillip Johnson officiating.
   Mr. Moon died Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Good Shepherd Medical Center, 
Longview, Texas.
   Survivors include his wife, Rita Moon; three sons, Steve, Greg and Michael 
Moon of Roanoke; one stepdaughter, Lamona Smith of Gilmer, Texas; one sister, 
Loyette Noel of Longview; and eight grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jackson Prestridge, Jathan Heard, Willie B. Moon, Rodney 
Moon, Huey Noles, Bobby Heard and Vernon Moon.
   Mr. Moon was born Nov. 18, 1938, son of Ottie and Era Prestridge Moon.  He 
was a construction worker.  Mr. Moon was preceded in death by his sister, Mary 
Virie Dechristofaro.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Mary Jim Iverson Butler

   (PINE HILL) Services for Mary Jim Iverson Butler, 82, of Pine Hill were 
Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Christian Church, with Bro. Ralph 
Posey and Bro. Ed Pannell officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Butler died Thursday, Sept. 30, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, 
Ga.
   Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Deroy Butler of Pine Hill; one 
daughter, Jackie Akins of Pine Hill; one grandson; two sisters, Catherine 
Stillwell of Graham and Florence Neal of Bowdon, Ga.; and three brothers, Bob 
Iverson of Oxford, Winfred Iverson of Pine Hill and Roy Iverson of Carrollton.
   Pallbearers were Wesley Downs, David Hewitt, Tim Iverson, Steve Butler, 
Stanley Merrill and Scott Butler. 
   Mrs. Butler was born Aug. 21, 1922, daughter of Edgar Lee and Lula Armentie 
Cosper Iverson.  She was a member of Pine Hill Christian Church and a 
homemaker.  Mrs. Butler was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Iverson; 
and one sister, Margarett Iverson.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Wilford Lewis Stewart

   (WOODLAND) Services for Wilford Lewis Stewart, 86, of Woodland were 
Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Church of Christ, with Bro. 
Alan Daniel and Bro. Clayton Scott officiating.  Burial was in Rocky Branch 
Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Stewart died Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Survivors include his wife, Laura H. Stewart; three sons, George B. Stewart 
of Tarrant, Norman R. Stewart of Woodland and Keith S. Stewart of Douglas, Ga.; 
one daughter, Vernell Perry of Birmingham; two granddaughters; four grandsons 
and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Stewart Hill, Arnold Rollins, Marlon Stewart, Jack Johnson, 
Matthew Stewart and Mark Stewart.  Honorary pallbearers were Brian Stewart, 
James Stewart and Tim Bennett.
   Mr. Stewart was born Jan. 26, 1918, son of George and Eugenie Wortham 
Stewart.  He was a member of Oak Grove Church of Christ and worked for the sign 
and paving crew for the State Highway Department.  Mr. Stewart was also a 
member of the Randolph County Rescue Squad.  Mr. Stewart is preceded in death 
by two brothers, Thomas Stewart and Zelmer Stewart; and two sisters, Zula 
Pollard and Irene Hill.
   Memorial donations may be made to Oak Grove Church of Christ.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Leonard Jackson Norred

   (ROANOKE) Services for Leonard Jackson Norred, 74, of Roanoke will be 
Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church.  Mr. Norred 
will lie in state one hour before service at the church.  The Rev. Alan Hurst 
and the Rev. Lendon Fields will officiate.  Burial will follow in the church 
cemetery.
   The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at 
Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.
   Mr. Norred died at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, Tuesday, Oct. 5.
   Survivors include two daughters, Ginger and Barbara Norred of Roanoke; three 
sons, Bobby and Ricky Norred and Jimmy Burgess of Roanoke; three sisters, 
Bovine Fisher and Earline Arnett of Roanoke and Opal Yarbrough of Pell City; 
five brothers, Virgil, Buck, Jimmy, Ronnie and Larry Joe Norred of Roanoke; 
four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be L. W. Culberson, Fred Norred, Shannon Mapp, Russell 
Norred, Chuck Norred and Kenneth Mapp.
   Mr. Norred was born April 22, 1930, son of Dalph and Flosie Truitt Norred.  
He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a retired fixer at Candlewick 
Yarns.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Virginia Norred and a 
brother, Billy Ray Norred.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Raymond Anthony McManus

   (WOODLAND) Services for Raymond Anthony McManus, 47, of Woodland will be at 
3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at West Broad Street Church of Christ, 
Wedowee, with Bro. Wilbur Bass, Bro. Bill Prince Jr. and Bro. Harry Cobb 
officiating.  Mr. McManus will lie in state 30 minutes before the service at 
the church.  Burial will follow in Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mr. McManus died Monday, Oct. 11, at University of Alabama Birmingham 
Hospital.
   Pallbearers will be David Burnham, Larry Messer, Dwight Thomas, Danny 
Abercrombie, Alan Daniel, Mark Carpenter, Gregg Moore, Otis Bowen Jr., Wayne 
Moore, Edward Herren, Tony Whiddon and Ken Cobb.  Honorary pallbearers will be 
North American Bus Industries employees.
   Survivors include his wife, Deborah Benefield McManus of Woodland; one 
daughter, Rebekah McManus of Woodland; one son, Benjamin McManus of Woodland; 
his parents, Raymond John and Ana V. McManus of Wedowee; one sister, Arianne 
Keens of Arlington, Texas; two brothers, Rory D. McManus of San Diego, Calif., 
and Randy S. McManus of Arlington, Texas; one niece and four nephews.
   Mr. McManus was born March 25, 1957, son of Raymond John and Ana Victoria 
Fong McManus.  He was a member of Taylor's Crossroads Church of Christ, an 
electrician for North American Bus Industries, and editor of The Harvester 
paper.  He worked for Alabama Power for 15 years as an electrical engineer and 
had taught at New Hope School and Woodland High School.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Taylor's 
Crossroads Church of Christ, 2884 County Road 79, Roanoke 36274 or St. Jude 
Hospital.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Samantha Johnson

   (WADLEY) Samantha Johnson, 13, of 720 County Road 862, Wadley, died 
Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services will be Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Primitive 
Baptist Church, Wadley, with Elder Thomas Knight and the Rev. Lathonia Wright 
officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include her mother, Juanita Johnson of Wadley; a brother, 
Sylvester Johnson of Wadley; grandmothers Christine Johnson of Wadley  and 
Mollie O'Neal of Wedowee; and several special aunts and uncles.  She was 
preceded in death by her grandfathers, Kit Johnson and Carl O'Neal.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before services.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Sammie Hall

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Mrs. Sammie Hall, 84, of Roanoke were 
Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. at Wehadkee Cemetery, with the Rev. Frank 
Foster officiating.
   Mrs. Hall died Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke.
   Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn "Kitty" Fortin of Flint, Mich.; one 
sister, Bobbie Johnson of Kansas; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 
and seven great-great-grandchildren.  Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Mrs. Hall was born Oct. 11, 1919, daughter of William Earl and Lennie Mae 
Harper Boggs.  She was a member of Rock Mills Methodist Church.  She is 
preceded in death by her husband, Rosco Hall; and one daughter, Margie Baker.
   The family requests memorial donations be made to your favorite charity.

Gregory Gilliam Johnson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Gregory Gilliam Johnson, 57, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
Oct. 12, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel.  The Rev. Don Quick and 
the Rev. Stoney Halsey officiated.
   Survivors include one son, Kristopher Johnson of Selma; and his mother, Sue 
Johnson of Roanoke.
   Mr. Johnson died Sunday, Oct. 10, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 11, 1947, son of Loys and Sue Brown Johnson.  He 
was a truck driver for Hub Trucking.  Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his 
wife, Betty Johnson, and father, Loys Johnson.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James Thomas Parkerson

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for James Thomas Parkerson, 65, of Roanoke were 
Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery.  The Rev. Ron Storey 
officiated.
   Mr. Parkerson died Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Adams Nursing Home in Alexander City.
   Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Lee Mathis of Lanett and Selena 
Parkerson; one son, John Thomas Parkerson of Roanoke; four sisters, Joyce Dukes 
and Barbara Duke of Woodberry, Ga., Patricia Pollard of Molena, Ga., and 
Beatrice Shirey of LaGrange, Ga.; two brothers, Morrison James Parkerson Jr. of 
Woodberry, Ga., and Charles Edward Presley of Manchester, Ga.; three 
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Parkerson was born Aug. 16, 1939, son of Morrison James and Cora Lee 
Garrett Parkerson.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, 
Grady Parkerson.

Hobbs Jackson

   (LAFAYETTE) Hobbs Jackson, 70, of LaFayette died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at 
his residence.
   Services were at First Baptist Church, LaFayette, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 
12, with interement [sic] in LaFayette City Cemetery.  The Rev. Paul Howard 
officiated.
   Mr. Jackson was born in Smiths on April 23, 1934.  He was a retired rural 
mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and an Army veteran of the Korean 
War.  He was a member of First Baptist Church of LaFayette.
   Surviving are two sons, Danny Jackson of Lanett and Mike Jackson of 
Woodland; one sister, Betty Littleton of Salem; one brother, Robert Jackson of 
Tyler, Texas; and two grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Alberta P. Phillips

   (LAFAYETTE) Alberta P. Phillips, 79, of LaFayette died Thursday, Oct. 7, 
2004, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Services were at New Harmony Baptist Church, LaFayette, at 1 p.m. on Monday, 
Oct. 11, with the Rev. W. H. Trammell officiating.  Interment was in the church 
cemetery.
   Surviving are three sons, the Rev. William Phillips and Kenneth Phillips of 
Roanoke and Raymond Phillips of Oxford; one stepson, Bennie Higgins of 
LaFayette; two daughters, Denia J. Crosby of Crestwood, Ky., and Bernice Holman 
of Birmingham; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Wesley 
Pearson of Roanoke; eight sisters, Doris Trammell, Julia Cofield and Annie 
Trammell of Roanoke, Lula Mae Huguley of LaFayette, Audrey Lewis of Birmingham, 
Rudene McCants and Mary Brown of Valley, and Helen Johnson of Decatur, Ga.; a 
special caretaker, Hattie P. Brooks of LaFayette; and a host of other relatives 
and friends.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Frankie Dewberry

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Frankie Dewberry, 48, of Wedowee were at 2 p.m. 
Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Mt. Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Anthony 
Herren, the Rev. Donald Spradlin and the Rev. Stiles Akins officiating.  Burial 
was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Dewberry died Wednesday, Oct. 6, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Pallbearers were Michael Caldwell, Kevin Gosdin, J. C. Holloway, Teman 
Holloway, Daniel Holloway and Chad Adams.  Honorary pallbearers were Jackie 
Holloway, Joe Holloway and Barry Messer.
   Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dewberry of Wedowee; his mother, Maudine 
Dewberry of Roanoke; his grandmother, Inez Dewberry of Wedowee; one daughter, 
Tammy Herren of Woodland; two sons, Scott McCain of Newell and James McCain of 
Woodland; six grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley Rozelle and Shelia Crenshaw 
of Woodland and Joyce Hill of Roanoke; and one brother, Billy Dewberry of 
Woodland.
   Mr. Dewberry was born Oct. 12, 1955, son of Wyatt and Maudine Craven 
Dewberry.  He was a member of Mt. Grove Baptist Church, a self-employed 
carpenter, and a member of Wedowee Masonic Lodge #93.  Mr. Dewberry was 
preceded in death by his father; one brother, Bobby Dewberry; and a 
grandfather, Louis Dewberry.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Mary F. Spurling

   (TALLADEGA) Services for Mary F. Spurling, 87, of Talladega were at 2 p.m. 
Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at Talladega Funeral Home with the Rev. Ottis Graves 
officiating.  Burial was in Midway Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Spurling died Thursday, Oct. 7, at Talladega HealthCare Center.
   Survivors include two daughters, Martha Holmes and Mary Johnson, both of 
Talladega; eight sons, Grady Spurling, Tony Spurling, Charlie Spurling, Danny 
Spurling and Dewayne Spurling, all of Talladega,
Benny Spurling of Anniston, Leslie Spurling of Lincoln and James Spurling of 
Roanoke; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Spurling, a Clay County native and longtime Talladega County resident, 
was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Talladega.  She was a 
homemaker.  She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Spurling.

Jewell Phillips Traver

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Jewell Traver of Franklin, Ga., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, 
at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mrs. Traver, born in Randolph County, Ala., was the daughter of the late 
Rev. Henry and Bessie Whitley Phillips.  She had lived in the Franklin area 
most of her life and was a member of Callaway Park Church of God.  Mrs. Traver 
was preceded in death by a brother, Morgan Phillips.
   Survivors include her husband of 38 years, James Traver of Franklin; a 
daughter, Pat Carnes of Cumming, Ga.; a son, Clint Bowen of LaGrange; and a 
stepdaughter, Regina Traver of West Virginia; four grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren; sisters, Gladys Lewis and Mavis Arnett; and brothers, S. R. 
Phillips, Talmadge "Wormy" Phillips and Jimmy "Doc" Phillips; and many nieces 
and nephews.
   Services were Friday, Oct. 8, at Callaway Park Church of God at 1 p.m. with 
the Rev. Theo Arnett and the Rev. Chad Smith officiating.  Burial followed at 
Flat Rock United Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made to Callaway Park 
Church of God in memory of Mrs. Traver.
   Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Robert Edward Barfield

   (STATESVILLE, N.C.) Robert Edward Barfield, 88, of Statesville, N.C., died 
Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
   Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church 
with the Revs. Bryan Davis, Robert Garrett and Henry Cook officiating.  Burial 
followed in the Iredell Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
   Mr. Barfield is survived by his wife, Betty Custer Barfield of Statesville; 
three sons, Rodney Barfield of Statesville, Dennis Barfield of Lexington, S.C., 
and Roger Barfield of LaGrange; one daughter, Barbara B. Blackburn of Lanett; 
three granddaughters; three grandsons; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, 
Winston Barfield of Statesville; and three sisters, Jessie Cromie of Indiana, 
Ollie Gay of LaGrange and Audrey Lentz of Charlotte, N.C.
   Born Oct. 16, 1915, in Roanoke, Mr. Barfield was the son of the late Robert 
Lee Barfield and Sally Yarbrough Barfield.  He attended Roanoke schools and 
served in the U.S. Navy.  Mr. Barfield married Betty Custer Barfield on Sept. 
25, 1955.  For more than 20 years, he was the owner-operator of Bob's Amoco 
Service Station in Statesville, and then he was associated with Gilson Brothers 
from 1968 until retiring in 1981.  Following his retirement, he was associated 
with Johnson Greenhouses until recent years.  He enjoyed working and enjoyed 
spending his time in his garden and working with flowers.  He was a member of 
Beulah Baptist Church.  Mr. Barfield was preceded in death by one son, Buford 
Barfield; one brother, A. J. Barfield; and three sisters, Mattie Lou Foster, 
Florence Albright and Mae Taylor.
   Memorials may be made to Beulah Baptist Church, 1851 Old Mountain Rd., 
Statesville, NC 28677.
   Arrangements were by Nicholson Funeral Home, Statesville.

Dorothy Moody

   (FORT WORTH, Texas) Dorothy Moody, 75, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, after a 
lengthy illness.
   Services were at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Chapel, 
Fort Worth, with burial in Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park.
   Mrs. Moody was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Moody, in 1961, and 
a son Glenn Moody, in 1978.
   Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Parrent; and two grandchildren; four 
sisters, Joy Heard and Frances Cantrell of Randolph County, Linda Gore and 
Merlyan Williamson; two brothers, Wayne "Boot" Heard and Sherman "Buck" Heard; 
and many nieces and nephews.

Lon Davis Crowder

   (ROANOKE) Lon Davis Crowder, 68, of Roanoke died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at 
East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services will be Thursday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. at Canaan Baptist Church, 
Welch, with the Rev. Mario McDaniel and the Rev. Jocephus Cofield officiating.  
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include two sisters, Mattie Emory of Roanoke and Charlie Mae Allen 
of Anniston; a special friend, Dora Gibson of Roanoke; and a special nephew, 
Rickey Emory of Roanoke.
   Viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke, from 10 a.m. 
until 6 p.m. on Wednesday.  The body will be placed in the church one hour 
before services.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Ruby Maud Drake 0liver

   (BESSEMER) Ruby Maud Drake Oliver, 74, of Bessemer died Saturday, Oct. 9, 
2004.
   Services were Saturday, Oct. 16, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 
Bessemer.
   Mrs. Oliver was born in Chambers County to the late Stoke and Addie Staples 
Drake on Sept. 15, 1930.  She joined Canaan Missionary Baptist Church at an 
early age and was a graduate of Chambers County Training School.  She attended 
Alabama State University and married her childhood sweetheart, the late John 
Lewis Oliver, in 1955 Mrs. Oliver taught school in the Chambers County School 
System and worked at Terry Manufacturing, Randolph County Hospital, Playtex and 
later Birmingham Stove and Range.  In 1972 Mrs. Oliver moved to Bessemer and 
joined First Missionary Baptist Church, where she worked with the Missionary 
Society, Nurses' Guild, and culinary department.  She served as a Sunbeam 
Teacher and as Matrons president.  Her community activities included Christian 
Union #23, Bessemer Concerned Citizens, Jefferson County Poll Workers and 
Ensley Neighborhood Association.
   Surviving are two daughters, Freida Oliver of Birmingham and Olga Perry of 
Douglasville, Ga.; one granddaughter; two sisters, Mary M. Williams of Bessemer 
and Frances Drake of Roanoke; three brothers, Stoke Drake of Cleveland, Ohio, 
Wilmer Drake of Roanoke and Benson Drake of Bessemer; and many other relatives 
and friends.

Byron Emanuel Perez

   (YUKON, Okla.) Services for Byron Emanuel Perez, 19, of Yukon, Okla., will 
be Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004, at 2 p.m. CDT at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Pine 
Mountain, Ga., with the Rev. George Crenshaw officiating.  Mr. Perez will lie 
in state from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church.  Burial will follow at Meadoway 
Gardens, LaGrange, Ga.
   Mr. Perez died Saturday, Oct. 16, at Manor Care, Oklahoma City, Olka.
   Survivors include his parents, Luis and Tina Perez of Yukon; his

by his brother, Carlos Perez.

George Harrington

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Lt. George "Big Neal" Harrington, 63, of LaGrange, Ga., died 
Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at Columbus Specialty Hospital.
   Mr. Harrington, born Aug. 27, 1941, in LaGrange, was the son of the late 
George Henry and Pauline Holley Harrington.  He retired from the Troup County 
Sheriff's Department as a lieutenant and had also worked at Colonial Baking 
Company.  Mr. Harrington was a member of Ayres Memorial United Methodist 
Church, Georgia Automobile Racing Hall of Fame Association and National Vintage 
Racing Association.
   Survivors include his wife, Sandra Bryant Harrington; two daughters, Deborah 
Lynn Thomas and Diane Miller; a son, George Danny Harrington; one brother, 
Steve Harrington, all of LaGrange; a half-brother, Gordon Harrington of 
Roanoke; grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 4 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby 
Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel with the Rev. Brett Mathews officiating.  Burial 
followed in Meadoway Gardens Cemetery.

Ralph Lewis

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Ralph A. Lewis, 73, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday, Oct. 17, 
2004, at his residence.
   Mr. Lewis, born Jan. 26, 1931, in Hogansville, Ga., was the son of the late 
George and Irene Granger Lewis.  He served in the U.S. Army and was a lifelong 
resident of the area.  Mr. Lewis was a retired sergeant with the City of 
LaGrange Police Department.  He later served four years with the City of 
Franklin Police Department.  He was a member of the United Congregational 
Christian Church on Juniper Street and the Peace Officers Association of 
Georgia.
   Survivors include a daughter, Aimee Thompson of LaGrange; a son, Terry 
Kennedy of Roanoke; five grandchildren; three sisters, Reba Jones of Newnan, 
Ga., Emma Haynes of Savannah, Ga., and Betty Norris of Chatsworth; Ga.; two 
brothers, Jimmy F. Lewis of Warner Robins, Ga., and Willard L. Lewis of Winsor, 
Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.
   Services were on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 
LaGrange Chapel, with Dr. Charles Chapman officiating.  Burial followed in 
Shadowlawn Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Richard Harlin

   (ROANOKE) Services for Richard Harlin, 80, of Roanoke were Thursday, Oct. 
14, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Dean 
officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Harlin died Tuesday, Oct. 12, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Pallbearers were the staff of Quattlebaum Funeral Home and Benefield Funeral 
Home.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary McCarter Harlin of Roanoke; one daughter, 
Carol Benefield of Wedowee; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Harlin was born Nov. 30, 1923, son of Richard D. and Jessie Harper 
Harlin.  He was a member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke, and was funeral home 
manager for Quattlebaum Funeral Home.

Zach McKinney

   (FIVE POINTS) Zach McKinney, 84, of Five Points died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 
2004, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Mr. McKinney was born in Chambers County on Aug. 5, 1920.  He was a retired 
farmer and a member of Five Points United Methodist Church.
   Services were at Five Points Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, 
with interment in Five Points Cemetery.  The Rev. Russell Williams officiated.
   Surviving are his wife, Frances McKinney of Five Points; a daughter, Linda 
Hodge of Five Points; a son, Tim McKinney of Birmingham; three grandchildren 
and one great-grandchild.

Akins of Graham; two sisters, Agatha Huddleston and Nelda Smith of Graham; 
three brothers, Benny Akins and Elton Akins of Graham and Herman Akins of 
Heflin; and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Greg East, Clayton Akins, Wayne Akins, Chad Loveless, 
Jackie Whaley, Stanley Merrill and Brad Yarbrough.
   Mr. Akins died Thursday, Oct. 14, at University of Alabama Birmingham 
Hospital.
   Mr. Akins was born on May 16, 1944, son of Offie Marion and Lettie Butler 
Akins.  He was a member of Zion Baptist Church and a cutter/marker for Sewell 
Manufacturing Clothing.  Mr. Akins was preceded in death by his parents; two 
brothers, T. J. Akins and Kenneth Akins; and one sister, Joy Yarbrough.

Laura (Beth) Quinn Stephens

   (HUNTSVILLE) Laura (Beth) Quinn Stephens, 79  of Huntsville, formerly of 
Roanoke, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004.
   Born in Pine Bluff, Ark., on Sept. 23, 1925, she was a graduate of John 
Marshall University School of Law.  She was a member of University Baptist 
Church and a long-time member of Order of Eastern Star and other fraternal 
organizations.  She worked as a legal secretary and retired from U.S. Army 
Missile Command.
   She is survived by two daughters, Laura Stephens Patterson of Huntsville and 
Sue Stephens McWhorter of Madison; one son, Richmond Stephens, currently 
residing in the Philippines; a grandson; two great-grandchildren; a sister, 
Nellie Ruth Fields of Pine Bluff, five nieces and three nephews.
   Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Laughlin Service Funeral 
Home, Huntsville.  Services will be at 10 a.m.  Thursday at the funeral home 
chapel, with Dr. Walter Nunn officiating.  Burial will be in Huntsville Memory 
Gardens.

Joseph Lewis

   (WADLEY) Joseph Lewis, 51, of Wadley died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at 
Columbus Regional Medical Center, Columbus, Ga.
   Services will be Thursday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. at County Line Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with the Rev. Jeffery Rosser officiating.  Interment will be in the 
church cemetery.  The remains will lie in state at the church one hour before 
the service.
   Mr. Lewis was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
   Surviving are his wife, Ophelia Lewis of Wadley; four sons, Tyrone Lewis, 
Willie Joe Lewis and Shaun Lewis of Wadley and Kenny Wayne Lewis of Lineville; 
two daughters, Shelia Lewis of Birmingham and Valerie Lewis of Wadley; two 
brothers, William Lewis of Alexander City and Edward Lewis of Daviston; two

Willie Kirk Todd

   (LAFAYETTE) Willie Kirk Todd, 81, of LaFayette died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, 
at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   A celebration of life was Friday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist 
Church, Five Points, with the Rev. Sanford Johnson officiating.  Interment was 
in Ozias Cemetery in Camp Hill.
   Born in Chambers County on Aug. 17, 1923,  Mr. Todd received his early 
education in Chambers County and Tuskegee (Institute) University in tailoring.  
He served in the U.S. Army.  He retired from Atlanta Life Insurance Co. in 
Opelika, Chambers County Board of Education and his own private business.  
Before his health failed, he was an active member at Macedonia Baptist Church, 
where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board, president of the financial 
committee, and president of East Alabama Singing Convention.  He was married 
for 50 years to the late Mrs. Gloria Vines Todd.
   Surviving are five daughters, Debra Y. Todd of Tuskegee, Bettye K. Todd of 
Montgomery, Charlotte L. Todd of LaFayette, Karen J. Todd of New Orleans and 
Crystal L. Todd of Huntsville; one son, Gabriel F. Todd of LaFayette; two 
grandsons; two sisters, Mary G. Smith and Sarah Spence of Five Points; and a 
host of nieces, nephews and friends.

   Mr. Nolen died Friday, Oct. 15, at Bill Nichols Veterans Home in Alexander

   A Randolph County native, Mr. Nolen was born Nov. 20, 1914, son of Charlie 
Weston and Odie Johnson Nolen.  He was a World War II veteran, a member of 
Corinth Christian Church and had worked in the textile industry.  He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Iva Dell Screws Nolen.

Gertrude Gibbs Faulkner, 100

   (TUCKER, Ga.) Services for Gertrude Gibbs Faulkner, 100, of Tucker, Ga. were 
at 2 p.m. CDT Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at Gold Ridge Baptist Church with the 
Revs. Bobby Garner and Milford Ballenger officiating.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Faulkner died Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Beverly Health Care in Decatur, Ga.
   Survivors include a son, Billy C. Faulkner of McDonough, Ga.; three 
daughters, Chris E. Newton, Faye Knight and Syble Dorsett, all of Tucker; a 
brother, Bill Gibbs of Ranburne; three sisters, Mammie Yates and Bennie 
McCaghren, both of Ranburne, and Lillian Richardson of Anniston; 40 
grandchildren, more than 73 great-grandchildren, and more than 30 great-great-
grandchildren.

   Mrs. Faulkner, a Randolph County native, was the oldest member of Gold Ridge

Jeff Faulkner; six children, Betty Jean Faulkner, Arlene Faulkner, Marlon "Bud" 
Faulkner, Hazel Tallent, Barney "Duke" Faulkner and Roy Faulkner; and seven 
siblings, Barney Gibbs, Annie Mae Yates, Burnice Boyd, Ednell Gibbs, Howard 
Gibbs, Lizzie Gibbs and B.F. Gibbs.

Robert F. McCarley

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Robert F. McCarley, 92, of Bowdon, Ga., died Monday, Oct. 25, 
2004, in Southwest Christian Hospice, Union City, Ga.
   He was born in Randolph County on Nov. 15, 1911, son of the late Albert and 
Delia Cooper McCarley.  He graduated from Woodland High School in 1932 and co-
owned and operated the McCarley Chevrolet dealership in Bowdon with Landers 
McCarley from 1955 until 1974 when he retired.  He was a member of Bowdon 
Baptist Church.
   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Rampy, 
and brothers Hoyt, Cooper, Carl and Landers McCarley.
   Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Nell Spence McCarley of Bowdon; two 
sons, Thomas McCarley of Carrollton, Ga., and Glenn McCarley of Augusta, Ga.; 
two stepdaughters, Jan Johnson of Bowdon and Kay Nell Whatley of Rome, Ga.; 
four grandchildren; and three sisters, Lila Lovvorn of Sylacauga, Gladys Writhe 
of Heflin and Mary Beth Strain of Woodland.

   Mr. Bible died Thursday, Oct. 21, at his home.

grandchildren.

   Mr. Waldrep died Tuesday, Oct. 19, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Eva Harmon Waldrep of Roanoke; one son, Patrick 
Waldrep of Roanoke; one grandson; his parents, Fred and Florine Waldrep of 
Roanoke; four brothers, Mike Waldrep, Gary Waldrep, Kenneth Waldrep and Larry 
Waldrep of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Leslie Waldrep, Tommy Waldrep, Randy Waldrep, Alvin McKee, 
Chris Harmon and Kenneth Harmon.
   Mr. Waldrep was born Dec. 22, 1947, son of Fred and Florine Thompson 
Waldrep. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was ordained as a 
deacon in 1984.  He was a member of Masonic Lodge 132.  He organized and sang 
with the gospel group Redeemers for 19 years and built Twin Creek Music Park.  
He worked for Franklin Aluminum for 34 years, in supervision for eight years.

Alfonzo 'Tee' Moore

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Alfonzo "Tee" Moore, 49, of LaGrange, Ga., died Monday, Oct. 
18, 2004, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Mr. Moore, a native of Anniston, was born Jan. 12, 1955, and was the son of 
Katherine Cook Moore and the late Willie Sam Moore Sr.  He was a 1973 graduate 
of LaGrange High School and attended West Georgia College.  He was a member of 
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and was president of Moore Roofing Company.  He was 
a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Terrell Moore of LaGrange; daughter, 
Tawana Brewer Frazier; his mother, Mrs. Katherine Moore of LaGrange; two 
sisters, Yulander Moore of Austell, Ga., and Ethel Tucker of Roanoke; seven 
brothers, Willie Sam Moore Jr., Jerry L. Moore, John W. Moore, Ricky L. Moore, 
Jeffery P. Moore, David G. Moore and Sammy L. Moore, all of LaGrange; aunts, 
uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives.  In addition to his father, he was 
preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny Moore and Tommy L. Moore.
   The memorial service was Saturday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist 
Church on Cox Street.  Elders John Poythress, Guy Poythress and the Rev. Willie 
Lee Hutchinson officiated.  A Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity memorial service was 
held at the funeral home on Friday, Oct. 22, at 5:30 p.m.

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Services for Eloise Parker Williams, 86, of Alexander City

   Mrs. Williams died Thursday, Oct. 21, at Chapman Healthcare Center.  She was 
born Dec. 2, 1917, in Montgomery County to Robert Emmett Parker and Ruby Logue 
Parker.  She was a member of Alexander City First Baptist Church and Sodalitian 
Sunday School Class.  She worked at Maxwell Air Force Base as an air traffic 
controller while Mr. Williams was at war and was also a substitute teacher for 
Marbury School System.
   She is survived by two sons, John A. Williams of Roanoke and Thomas P. 
Williams of Alexander City; a daughter, Carol W. Pitchford of Alexander City; 
seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Benjamin A. Williams; 
a son, Benjamin A. Williams Jr.; and a brother, Robert E. Parker Jr.

Herbert Pearson Jr.

   (LIBERTY, Mo.) Herbert Pearson Jr., 74, of Liberty, Mo., formerly of 
Wedowee, died Monday, Oct. 18, in Liberty.
   Mr. Pearson was born April 21, 1930, to the late Herbert B. Pearson Sr. and 
Dorothy Gillium Pearson.  He was a graduate of Auburn University.  He served 
two years in the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant and later as a captain in the 
Reserves.  He retired in 1985 from the Automated Logistics Management Systems 
Agency for the U.S. Army after 30 years in civil service.  He was an active 
member of Liberty United Methodist Church and the Kansas City Woodworkers Guild.
   Services were at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, at Liberty United Methodist 
Church, with interment in Glenridge Cemetery, Liberty.
   Mr. Pearson is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nell Pearson; a son, David 
Pearson; two daughters, Cathy Hawkins and Linda Williams; and six grandchildren.

   Survivors include five sons, James Philpot of Gadsden, Gaines Morris Potts 
of Warner Robbins, Ga., Calvin White of Wedowee, Thomas Potts of LaGrange, and 
Charlie Gaines of Boston, Mass.; and a special niece, Fannie Pearl Green of 
Wedowee.
   She was preceded in death by a sister, Katie Bell Smith; and her husband, 
James White.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before services.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.
