OBITUARIES:

George Robert Curlington

   (ROANOKE) Dr. George Robert Curlington, 62, of Roanoke died Saturday, 
May 2, 1998, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika after a short illness.
   A native of Poland, Dr. Curlington was born May 29, 1935, son of Stefan 
Kedzierzawski and Helena Kruchefska.  He was a graduate of Warsaw Conservatory of 
Music and received his doctorate degree in music from Florida State University.  He 
taught at Auburn University, Southeastern Louisiana University and Southern Union State 
Community College.  He played with the Montgomery and LaGrange, Ga., symphony 
orchestras.  He was the principal violinist at LaGrange and was a member of the Gala 
String Quartet.
   Survivors include his wife, Jackie Huggin Curlington of Roanoke; two daughters, 
Melody Curlington of Roanoke and Michelle Harvey of Buffalo, N.Y.; one son, Alexander 
Curlington of Roanoke; and one sister, Bozenna Kedzierzawska of Poland.
   A private funeral service will be held, and burial will follow on family property.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Cardiac Research, c/o Dr. Andrew 
Epstein at University Hospital in Birmingham, 1900 University Blvd., Birmingham, AL 
35294-0006.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Carrie Kelley Paige

   (ROANOKE) Carrie Kelley Paige, 86, of Roanoke died Monday, April 20, 1998, 
in Chattanooga, Tenn.
   Mrs. Paige was preceded in death by a brother, Lesley Kelly; her husband, Robert Lee 
Paige; and a son, Robert Joel Paige.
   Survivors include a daughter, Edith Hall; a son, Nathaniel Paige of Atlanta; a sister, 
Myrtis Sims of Americus, Ga.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and 
great-great-grandchildren; in-laws, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
   Services for Mrs. Paige were April 24 at 11:30 a.m. at Westside Missionary Baptist 
Church, Chattanooga, with the Rev. L. Earl Tolbert officiating.  Interment was in Forest 
Hills Cemetery.
   Pallbearers were the members of the Deacon Board of Westside Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home, Chattanooga.

Susie Virginia Windsor

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Susie Virginia Windsor, 79, of Roanoke were 
Monday, May 4, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Christian Church, with the Revs. Harold 
Bonner and Gary Baugh officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Windsor died Saturday, May 2, at her home.
   A Randolph County native, she was born Dec. 31, 1918, daughter of William P. Poor 
Sr. and Nancy Swann Poor.  She was a member of Mt. Zion Christian Church and had 
retired from Palm Beach Company.
   Survivors include her husband, Henry C. Windsor Jr. of Roanoke; two sons, Freddy W. 
Windsor and Jerry K. Windsor, both of Roanoke; and three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Wayne Windsor, Bill Calhoun, Craig Calhoun, Kenneth Calhoun, Gary 
Clark and Ronnie Clark.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Walter Lee Harper

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Walter Lee Harper, 71, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
May 3, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Welcome Home Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ridley Herren 
and J. D. Bearden officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Harper died Friday, May 1, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, he was born May 8, 1926, son of Green Clarence and Lizzie 
Johnson Harper.  He was a World War II Army veteran, a self-employed carpenter and a 
member of Union Hill Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Earlene Brown Harper of Roanoke; one daughter, Ginger 
Dunlap of Roanoke; two sons, David Harper and Tim Harper of Roanoke; two step- 
daughters, Nancy Anglin of Valley and Kaye Ferrell of Huguley; three step-sons, Billy 
Fred Boyd of Auburn and Gary Boyd and William Boyd of Roanoke; three sisters, 
Florence Hand of Acworth, Ga., Joyce Vaughn of Roanoke and Mary Bailey of 
Scottsbridge, Ga.; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Robie Harper, Kevin Smith, Billy Smith, Jason Ferrell, Timothy Boyd 
and Ricky Anglin.  Honorary pallbearers were Kevin Anglin, Chris Ferrell, Brandon Boyd, 
Brian Halbrook and Brad Halbrook.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Arthur Lee Goss

   (ROANOKE) Arthur Lee Goss, 43, of Roanoke died Friday, May 1, 1998, at Randolph 
County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services were at Mt. Carrie Missionary Baptist Church, Glenn, Ga., on Tuesday, 
May 5, at 1 p.m. CDT.  The Rev. L. B. Houston officiated.
   Surviving are his parents, Hardy and Christine Goss; two sons, Arthur Goss and Ronnie 
Goss of Roanoke; one daughter, Detra Cannon of Roanoke; three brothers, Frank Goss, 
Johnny Goss and Roger Goss of Roanoke; two sisters, Phyllistine Hunter and Lisa Goss of 
Roanoke; a special friend, Irene Thomas of Roanoke; and three grandchildren.
   Mr. Goss was a member of Mt. Carrie Missionary Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Fred Whaley

   (WEDOWEE) Graveside funeral service for Fred Whaley, 79, of Wedowee will be at 
11 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Wedowee, 
with the Rev. Tim Whaley officiating.
   Mr. Whaley passed away Monday, May 4, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in 
Tuskegee, following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born July 19, 1918, son of Rube and 
Willie Mae Whaley.  He had been employed with the Randolph County Road Department 
and was a World War II veteran and the recipient of four Bronze Stars.  He was a Baptist.  
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Traylor Whaley.
   Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Inez Holloway of Wedowee, Mrs. [sic - Miss] 
Lucille Whaley of Roanoke, and Mrs. Velma Mitchum of Huntsville; four brothers, Pete 
Whaley of Roanoke, Lum Pierce Whaley and Harvis Whaley of Wedowee, and H. S. 
Whaley of Rock Mills; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers will be Jackie Whaley, Hollis Holloway, Bobby Stewart, Kenneth Whaley, 
Monroe Whaley, Mike Whaley and Scott Whaley.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Steve Arrington

   (PHENIX CITY) Steve W. Arrington, 40, of Phenix City died Wednesday, 
April 29, 1998, of a brain aneurysm.
   Funeral services were at 3 p.m. EDT on Saturday, May 2, at Gray Hill Church of God in 
Randolph County with the Rev. Jeff Watts and the Rev. Miles Avery officiating, according 
to Vance Memorial Chapel, Phenix City.
   Mr. Arrington was born March 19, 1958, in Heard County, Ga., the son of Donald 
Arrington and Molly Gosdin Arrington of Phenix City.  He was an electrician, and he also 
served in the United States Navy.
   Other than his parents, he is survived by his daughter, Alicia Arrington of Lanett.
   Arrangements were by Vance Memorial Chapel, Phenix City.

Huey Lee Watson

   (HUNTSVILLE) Funeral services for Mrs. Huey Lee Watson, 92, of Huntsville were 
Sunday, May 3, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Watson taught school for 37 years in Randolph, Calhoun and Talladega counties.  
She graduated from Heflin High School in 1924 and graduated from Jacksonville State 
College.  She was a member of Bynum Baptist Church and made her home in Bynum for 
almost 50 year[s] before moving to Huntsville.
   Survivors include one daughter, Jean Watson Bergeron of Huntsville; two 
grandchildren, Jeanne Taylor and Billy McCarty Jr.; and nine great-grandchildren.
   Local arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Loys Elder

   (ABANDA) Loys Elder, 89, of Abanda died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at Care Center 
of Opelika.
   Mr. Elder was born in LaGrange, Ga., on Dec. 10, 1908.  He was retired from the 
Electrolux Vacuum Cleaner Company after 52 years of service as a salesman.  He was a 
member of New Hope Christian Church of Chambers County and served as Sunday school 
superintendent for 45 years.
   Funeral services were at New Hope Christian Church on Saturday, May 2, at 3 p.m., 
with interment in the church cemetery.  Services were conducted by the Rev. Phillip Gore 
and the Rev. John Cole.
   Surviving are his wife, Inez Elder of Abanda; two sons, Tom Elder of Frisco, Texas, and 
Jim Elder of Gastonia, N.C.; one step-son, Larry Burdette of Wadley; one brother, Dewey 
Elder of LaFayette; and three grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Sanders Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Albert Braska White Jr.

   (IRONDALE) Albert Braska White Jr., 49, of Irondale died suddenly Monday, 
April 27, 1998, at his home.
   Funeral services were Thursday, April 30, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 
with the Rev. Ricky Emory officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. White was born July 30, 1948, son of Albert Braska 
White Sr. and Thelma Gay Bradley White.  He has been employed with the V.A. Hospital 
in Birmingham.
   Survivors include his mother, Thelma White of Wedowee; and two brothers, 
Pete White Sr. of Wedowee and Bill White of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Pete White Jr., John White, James White, Jason White, Henry Mears 
and Joe Mears.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Lewis Langley

   (LAFAYETTE) Graveside funeral services for Lewis Langley, 88, of LaFayette were 
Friday, May 8, 1998, at 2 p.m. at LaFayette City Cemetery.  The Rev. Vernon Brown 
officiated.
   Mr. Langley died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at his residence.
   A native and lifelong resident of Chambers County, Mr. Langley was born April 9, 1910.  
He was a retired farmer and member of County Line Baptist Church in Chambers County.
   Survivors include one daughter, Jeanette Rollins of Woodland; three sons, Scott Langley 
and Ben Langley of LaFayette and Mac Langley of Lanett; 12 grandchildren and 
19 great-grandchildren.
   Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to County Line Baptist Church 
or to the Alzheimer's Association.
   Sanders Funeral Home, LaFayette, was in charge of arrangements.

Roberta F. Phibbs

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Roberta F. Phibbs, 51, of Carrollton, Ga., died Wednesday 
evening, May 6, 1998, at her residence.
   Mrs. Phibbs, a native of the New Hope community, Randolph County, Ala., was the 
daughter of the late Walker French and Verdie Wilder French.  She was a graduate of 
Randolph County High School and attended Jacksonville State University.  She and her 
husband had lived in Carrollton for the past 20 years, moving there from Burlington, N.C.  
She was office manager and optician working for Dr. Frederick W. Tillman and formerly 
with the late Dr. L. Wayne Brown.  She was a member of the American Optometric 
Technician Association, Trinity Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class.
   Survivors include her husband, Forest R. Phibbs of Carrollton; her mother, Mrs. Verdie 
W. French of Wedowee; two sisters, Johnnie New of Wedowee and Marvalene Burch of 
White Plains; a twin brother, Robert French of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, Dewitt French 
of Dadeville; and nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, Carrollton, 
with the Rev. Robert Skelton and the Rev. Larry Insko officiating.
   Music was furnished by Audrey Culpepper, Jimmy New and Dale Hendrick.  Interment 
was in Carrollton City Cemetery, with the Rev. Woodrow Hudson in charge.
   Pallbearers were Wayne Garner, Robert Kenimer, Dr. Peter Worthy, Dr. John T. Lewis, 
Dr. Rick Tillman, Ed Wynn, Lamar Putnam and Tim Warren.  The Friendship Sunday 
School Class formed an honorary escort.
   In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make a contribution to Trinity Baptist Church, 501 
Northside Dr., Carrollton, GA 30116 or Carroll Regional Hospice Care, 906 South Park 
St., Carrollton, GA 30117.

Carolyn Ann Smith

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Carolyn Ann Smith, 70, of Roanoke were at 3 p.m. 
Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at Noonday Christian Church, New Hope, with the Revs. 
Tommy McLeroy, Kenneth Johnson and Harold Bonner officiating.  Burial was in 
Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Smith died Tuesday, May 5, at Hospice of LaGrange following an extended illness.
   A resident of Roanoke for many years, Mrs. Smith was born June 2, 1927, in LaGrange, 
Ga., daughter of Acee Clarence and Carrie Lee Hartley McLeroy.  She was a homemaker 
and a member of Noonday Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by two sons, 
Thomas Errol Bonner and William Allen Bonner Jr.
   Survivors include her husband, Nathan Jackson Smith of Roanoke; four daughters, Mrs. 
Shirley Young of Boaz, Mrs. Priscilla Revell of Doerun, Ga., and Mrs. Karen Ussery and 
Mrs. Sharon Hendon of Roanoke; three sons, Hartley Bonner of Grantville, Ga., Harry 
Bonner of LaGrange and Larry Smith of Bowdon, Ga.; three brothers, Harry Lemeaux, 
Barnard McLeroy and Kenneth McLeroy, all of LaGrange; 14 grandchildren and 
six great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Monty Cantrell, Alan Cantrell, Stacy Cantrell, Tracy Cantrell, 
Terry Holloway and Earnest McLeroy.  Honorary pallbearers were grandsons.

Earl R. McCarley

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Earl R. McCarley, 74, of LaGrange, Ga., died Friday, April 10, 
1998, at Hospice of LaGrange after several months of illness.
   A native of Woodland, Ala., he was born Jan. 30, 1924, son of the late Hoyt Lester and 
Myrtis Robertson McCarley.  He was retired from Money Back Stores and a member of 
Zion Baptist Church in Woodland and a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II.
   Funeral services were at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, on Sunday, April 12, 
with the Rev. Michael Hornsby officiating.  Interment was in Zion Baptist Church 
Cemetery, Woodland, with the Rev. David Daniel officiating.
   Surviving are his wife, Jean M. McCarley of LaGrange; three daughters, Sandra A. 
Williams of LaGrange, Carolyn R. McCarley of Luthersville, Ga., and Melissa J. McCarley 
of Roanoke; three sons, Buddy G. Whitely of LaGrange and George D. McCarley and 
Phillip R. McCarley of Roanoke; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, 
Myrl Rackley of Altha, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
   Mr. McCarley was preceded in death by a son, Richard McCarley, and a sister, 
Margaret Golden.
   Flowers will be accepted, or those desiring may contribute to Hospice LaGrange or 
to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. McCarley.
   Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home of LaGrange was in charge of arrangements.

Ida Lee Westbrook Billingsley

   (WEDOWEE) Ida Lee Westbrook Billingsley, 81, of Wedowee died Thursday, May 7, 
1998, at her home.
   Funeral services were Monday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Newell, 
with the Rev. E. S. Bolton officiating.  Interment was in the Mt. Gilead Cemetery.
   Surviving are two daughters, Merlie Foster of Atlanta and Vernelle Billingsley of 
Wedowee; two sons, Travis L. Billingsley and Willie R. Billingsley of Atlanta; five 
godchildren; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; 
four sisters, Rebell Dupree of Anniston, Erris Houston and Alice Delaney of Heflin and 
Helen Elston of Kansas City, Mo.; three brothers, A. C. Westbrook of Heflin, Willie B. 
Westbrook of Roopville, Ga., and Tommie Westbrook of Atlanta; and a host of nieces, 
nephews, cousins and friends.
   She was preceded in death by one son, Norris; two daughters, Mary Jim Ponder and 
Bertha Billingsley; and one godson, Jeryl Traylor.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

John Elijah Andress

   (BREWTON) John Elijah Andress, 76, of Brewton (Alco community) died Wednesday, 
April 29, 1998, at his residence after an extended illness.
   Mr. Andress was a native of Butler County, and a resident of the Brewton area, since 
1953.  He was a graduate of Auburn University with a master's in vocational education.  
He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Zeta and Gamma Sigma Delta honor societies.  
He was employed with the Escambia County Board of Education and taught vocational 
education for 23 years.  In 1971-1976 he served as county vocational director and 
organized two vocational centers.  Mr. Andress was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, 
having served in World War II.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in 
Brewton.
   Mr. Andress is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sue Carpenter Andress of Brewton; two sons, 
Randal Andress of Huntsville and Allan Andress of Hope Hull; one daughter, Brenda 
Andress Potts of Birmingham; four brothers, Terry Andress of Fairhope, Harold Andress 
and Bob Andress of Georgetown, Ga., and Donald Andress of Daphne; three sisters, 
Eloise Andress Kuczmarski of Stone Mountain, Ga., Betty Andress Foster of Fort 
Deposit, and Carolyn Andress Bowden of Honorville; and five grandchildren.  In-laws 
from Randolph County include Mrs. Mildred Hester, Mrs. Ione Herren, Mrs. Ermis 
Wingard, Mrs. Sarah Turner, Mrs. Ruth Childress, Mrs. Joyce Davis and 
Sam Carpenter Jr.
   Services were Saturday, May 2, at First United Methodist Church in Brewton.  Friends 
and relatives who wish may contribute to Community Hospice of Escambia County, 1023 
Douglas Ave., Suite 106, Brewton, AL 36426, in memory of John E. Andress.

Sallie Scott, 107

   (ROANOKE) Sallie Scott, 107. of 470 Smith Street, Roanoke, died Thursday, 
May 14, 1998, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 20, at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. Eric Ware officiating.
   Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
   Ms. Scott is survived by several cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents, 
Jim and "Tip" Whatley; her husband Roy Scott; and a son, Howard Pete Scott.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before funeral services.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Jimmie Lee Woodgett

   (WEDOWEE) Jimmie Lee Woodgett, 81, of 980 County Rd. 15, Wedowee, died 
Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Funeral services were Monday, May 18, at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist 
Church, Wadley, with Elder Thomas Knight and Elder Robert W. Trammell officiating.  
Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Addie Lucinda Woodgett of Wedowee; a son, Willeard 
Woodgett of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a brother, T. L. Woodgett of Wedowee; two sisters, 
Mattie Ware of Roanoke and Ruby White of Trenton, N.J.; and three grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus "Sunny Man" Woodgett and Mary Ella 
Woodgett, and a son, Charlie Byrdsong Jr.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Arthur Lee Bain

   (HEFLIN) Funeral services for Arthur Lee Bain, 72, of Heflin were at 11 a.m. Saturday, 
May 16, 1998, at Pinetucky Baptist Church, with the Rev. Billy Wayne Morris officiating.  
Burial was at Morrison's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Bain died suddenly at his home on May 14.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Sept. 26, 1925, son of Willie J. and 
Elsie Morrison Bain.  He was employed as a sheet metal worker in the heating and cooling 
business and was a member of Pinetucky Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Hazel Bain of Heflin; three sons, Lynn Bain and Marty Bain 
of Wedowee and Carl Bain of Heflin; two sisters, Mary Jim Bain of Anniston and Estelle 
Owen of Phenix City; and three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were John Bain, Don Bain, Ron Bain, Bob Bain, Chris Bain and Steve Bain.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Tommy Lester Denham

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Tommy Lester Denham, 57, of Roanoke were at 
3 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 1998, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Bobby Kirby 
and Jodie Overton officiating.  Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
   Mr. Denham died Friday, May 15, at Citizens Hospital in Talladega after an extended 
illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Jan. 10, 1941, son of James 
George and Mary Lizzie Denham.  He had been employed with Plantation Patterns and 
was a member of High Pine Baptist Church.
   Survivors include two brothers, James Herbert Denham and Claude Edward Denham, 
both of Roanoke; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Earl Hall, Mike Denham, Danny Pullen, Jeff Hall, Tommy Pinkard and 
Jesse Cook.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

John B. Brazell Jr.

   (ROANOKE) John B. Brazell, Jr., 65, of Roanoke died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, 
at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Mr. Brazell was born July 25, 1932, in LaFayette.  He was retired from West Point 
Pepperell as a truck driver after 18 years of service.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran and 
member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Clacksville.
   Funeral services were at Sander Funeral Home, LaFayette, on Saturday, May 16, at 
10 a.m. with burial in LaFayette City Cemetery.  The Rev. Maynard McGinty officiated.
   Mr. Brazell is survived by his wife, Margaret Brazell of Roanoke; one daughter, Vickie

Clarence Walter Morris

   (WADLEY) Graveside services for Clarence Walter Morris, 81, of Wadley will be 
Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at 3 p.m. at Wadley City Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill 
Huffman officiating.
   Mr. Morris died Sunday, May 17, at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in Alexander 
City after a short illness.
   Mr. Morris was born at Waialae, Hawaii, March 29, 1917, son of Fred W. and Lena 
Mathes Morris.  He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and had been employed with 
Price Pipeline Construction Company.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary H. Collier Morris of Wadley; one daughter, Wanda 
Oliver of Atlanta; one son, James A. Morris of Orlando, Fla.; and one sister, Lena Clark 
of Lancaster, Ohio.

Arthur 'Shine' Watkins

   (ROANOKE) Arthur "Shine" Watkins, Jr., 58, of Roanoke died Sunday, May 17, 1998, 
in Roanoke.
   Funeral services will be Thursday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 
549 Riley St., Roanoke, with burial in Skyview Memorial Gardens.
   The Rev. Lathonia J. Wright and the Rev. R. L. Heflin will officiate.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Barbara Watkins of Roanoke; three sons, Richard Jones 
of Anniston, Arthur Watkins III of Atlanta and Shawn Watkins of Roanoke; his mother, 
Mrs. Ruth Watkins of Roanoke; four sisters, Maggie Person, Betty Satterwhite and Agnes 
Watkins of Atlanta and Mary Nell Blake of Roanoke; a brother, Henry Watkins of 
Roanoke and three grandchildren.
   Visitation will be at the chapel of Silmon Mortuary on Wednesday from noon 
until 7 p.m.
   Mr. Watkins will lie in state at the church on Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time 
of the funeral.

Morgan Brewer

   (VAN NUYS, Calif.) Funeral services for Morgan Brewer, 63, of Van Nuys, Calif., 
were at 2 p.m. Friday, May 15, 1998, from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. 
Don Quick and Frank Foster officiating.  Burial was at White's Chapel Methodist Church 
Cemetery in Roanoke.
   Mr. Brewer died Monday, May 11, at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys.
   Mr. Brewer, a former resident of Roanoke, was born in Randolph County on Aug. 10, 
1934, son of Burl Patrick and Annie Bell Waldrep Brewer.  He had been employed as a 
sheet metal mechanic and was a member of White's Chapel Methodist Church.
   Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Bowen of Roanoke; one son, Douglas Warner 
of Pittsburg, Kan.; one brother, J. P. Brewer of Richland, Pa.; a niece, Jean Olaveson of 
LaFayette; and a friend, Eileen Meddy of Van Nuys; and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Jack Olaveson, Phillip Olaveson, John Glass, Charles Fetnew, 
Nickie Burke and Mike Whaley.

William Henry Gilbert Moore

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for William Henry Gilbert Moore, 74, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at 1 p.m. at High Pine Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bobby 
Kirby and Paul Moore officiating.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
   Mr. Moore died Monday, May 18, at Pell City after an extended illness.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Moore was born Oct. 27, 1923, son of Troy and Mary 
Brazil Moore.  He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, a member of High Pine 
Baptist Church and had worked as a rural mail carrier.
   Survivors include his wife, Virginia Moore of Roanoke; two daughters, Jeanette 
Wadsworth of Pell City and Elizabeth Smith of Trussville; two sons, Paul Moore of 
Greenville, S.C., and Dan Moore of Old Hickory, Tenn.; two brothers, I. B. Moore of 
Roanoke and John Ray Moore of Bowdon, Ga.; and five grandchildren.
   Mr. Moore will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at noon on Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Ricky Moore, Lee Moore, William Moore, Dean Myhand, 
John Moore and Jerry Brazil.

Betty Jo Eichelberger

   (ANNISTON) Funeral services for Betty Jo Eichelberger, 61, of Anniston were 
Thursday, May 21, 1998, at 2 p.m. at North Main Congregational Christian Church, with 
the Rev. Lavelle Reynolds officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens
   Mrs. Eichelberger died Tuesday, May 19, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical 
Center in Anniston.
   A resident of Fayette from 1974 to 1991, Mrs. Eichelberger was a Troup County, Ga., 
native, born Sept. 6, 1936, daughter of Charles W. Dollar Sr. and Evelyn Christine 
Reynolds Dollar.  She was a homemaker and attended First United Methodist Church 
in Oxford.  Mrs. Eichelberger was preceded in death by a son, Jamie.
   Survivors include her husband, James R. Eichelberger of Anniston; one daughter, Jan 
Martin of Anniston; four grandchildren; one sister, Jean McCreight of New Site; and two 
brothers, Charles Dollar Jr. of Opelika and Gary Dollar of Columbus, Ga.

Huey L. "Bunch" Johnson

   (KANSAS CITY, Kan.) Huey L. "Bunch" Johnson, 69, of Kansas City, Kan., died 
Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at Ozawkie, Kan.
   Funeral services were at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church, Wadley, on Friday, 
May 22, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Willie A. Treadwell officiating.  Interment was in 
Bethlehem cemetery.
   Surviving are his wife, Mary J. Johnson of Kansas City; three sons, Huey L. Johnson Jr. 
of Las Vegas, Nev., and John I. Johnson and Cory W. Johnson of Kansas City; three 
daughters, Thelma Dixon of South Carolina, Susan Johnson of Ford Heights, Ill., and 
Diann Reed of Milwaukee, Wis.; three brothers, McKinley Johnson of Wedowee, Joe 
Lewis Johnson of Anniston and Charles Johnson of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Adella 
O'Neal of Wedowee and Maydine Holloway of Anniston; 17 grandchildren, 
16 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

   (WEDOWEE) Troy Roosevelt New, 77, of Wedowee died Thursday, May 21, 1998, 
at Clay County Hospital after an extended illness.
   Funeral services were Saturday, May 23, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with 
the Revs. Don Parris and Max New officiating.  Burial was at Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Adele Hanson New of Wedowee; four sons, Dr. Gerald New 
of Decatur, Bill L. New of Opelika, Max L. New of LaGrange, Ga., and Ricky H. New of 
Lineville; two sisters, Velma Taylor of Lineville and Gewell Craven of Oxford; two 
brothers, Carl New of Lineville and Jimmy New of Wedowee; 11 grandchildren and 
five great-grandchildren.

John Leonard Payne

   (ROANOKE) The funeral services for John Leonard Payne, 88, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at 3 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. 
E. G. Clark officiating.  Burial will follow at Levens Baptist Church Cemetery in 
Wedowee.
   Mr. Payne died Monday, May 25, at Baptist Medical Center Montclair.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, he was born June 21, 1909, son of Charley Martin 
and Corra Johnston Payne.  He was a member of Union Baptist Church and had been 
employed with Handley Mills.
   Survivors include his wife, Ollie Duffey Payne of Roanoke; one son, Gene Payne of 
LaFayette; one sister, Ruby Furr of Houston, Texas; one brother, Curtis Payne of Texas; 
four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Tomie W. Meacham

   (NEWELL) Tomie W. Meacham, 75, of Newell died Friday, May 22, 1998, 
from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Wedowee.
   The funeral service was Monday, May 25, at 2 p.m. at Union Baptist Church with the 
Revs. Ray Runyan, Steve Dempsey and Russell Abrams officiating.  Burial followed in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Meacham was born Oct. 15, 1922, son of Earnest 
Dewey and Molly Smith Meacham.  He was a member of Caver's Grove Christian Church 
and had retired from West Point Stevens.
   Survivors include two sisters, Ollie R. Meacham and Mellie V. Meacham, both of 
Newell; a brother, Leroy Meacham of Newell; eight nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Durward Williamson, Paul Steed, Billy Fredriksen, Jason Simpson, 
Don Lovvorn, Billy Edwards, Roger Abrams and James Freeman.

Merrell Guin Hill

   (NEWELL) Merrell Guin Hill, 65, of Newell died Friday, May 22, 1998, 
from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Wedowee.
   The funeral service was Sunday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel with the 
Revs. Monroe Lipscomb and Max New officiating.  Burial followed at Hillview Memorial 
Park in Alex City.
   Mr. Hill was born Jan. 9, 1933, son of Marion and Onelda Whatley Hill.  He was a 
Navy veteran and had been employed with Auburn University extension service.
   Survivors include two sons, Jeffery Glenn Hill of Alex City and Michael L. Hill of 
Columbus, Miss.; three grandchildren; his mother, Onelda Hill of Lineville; two brothers, 
Larry Hill of Opelika and Hubert Hill of Tennessee.
   Pallbearers were Scott Railey, Scott Powell, Dale Morrison, Sonny Hill, Charles Hill and 
Robbie Duke.

Ella Morrison Buckhannan, 106

   (DELTA) The funeral service for Ella Morrison Buckhannan, 106, of Delta was 
Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel in Lineville with 
the Revs. L. C. Harris and Charles Haynie officiating.  Burial followed in the Center West 
Baptist Cemetery.
   Mrs. Buckhannan died Monday, May 25, at her home.  She was a native and lifelong 
resident of Randolph County.  Mrs. Buckhannan was a homemaker and a member of 
Center West Baptist Church in Delta.
   She is survived by two daughters, Mary A. Smith of Delta and Irma Stephens of 
Marietta, Ga.; two sons, Fred Buckhannan of Heflin and Lawrence Buckhannan of Delta; 
41 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren and approximately 30 great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Roger Buckhannan, Kenny Buckhannan, Johnny Buckhannan, Charles 
Stephens, Dale Davis, Joe Gentry, Randall Smith, Donald Buckhannan, Larry Buckhannan 
and Phillip Gentry.  Honorary pallbearers were Robin Buckhannan and Glenda Jones.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville was in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Mae Funke

   (MURPHY, N.C.) Betty Mae Funke, 71, of Winter Park, Fla., and Murphy, N.C., 
died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, in a Murphy hospital.
   A native of Pierson, Fla., she had lived in Detroit, Mich., for most of her life before 
moving back to Florida and North Carolina in her later years.  She was the daughter of the 
late Rhode and Ruth Harrison White.  She was retired from the Seminole County, Fla., 
school system.  She was a member of Aloma Methodist Church in Winter Park.
   Surviving are her husband of 53 years, James F. Funke; three daughters, Cynthia M. 
Burt of London, Ohio, Charlene Ruth McLeod of Asheville and Jessica King of Merritt 
Island, Fla.; two sons, Dennis James Funke of Roanoke and Rodney Alexander Funke of 
Chuluota, Fla.; three sisters, Liz Light of Northville, Mich., Lee Weldon of Jacksonville, 
Fla., and Louise Smith of Niceville, Fla.; a brother, John White of South Bend, Ind.; 
five grandchildren and a great-grandson.
   Services were at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 23, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, 
with the Rev. Alan Wildsmith officiating.  Entombment was in Greenlawn Memorial 
Gardens.
   Arrangements were by Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy.

Mary Will Adcock

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mary Will Adcock, 78, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, May 27 1998, at 1 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Revs. Barry 
Cosper and Frank Sledge officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Adcock died Monday, May 25, at Randolph County Hospital after a short illness.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, she was born Dec. 28 1919, daughter of Watson 
and Nannie Lue Hester Parrish.  She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, a former 
Pink Lady with Randolph County Hospital and had retired from Palm Beach Company.  
Mrs. Adcock was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jasper Adcock, and 
two sisters, Lois Parish Burson and Odel Parrish.
   Mrs. Adcock is survived by a sister Dorothy Parrish of Roanoke.
   Mrs. Adcock will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at noon on 
Wednesday.

Roanoke, AL 36274.

Clarence Gilbert Marshall Sr., 100

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Clarence Gilbert Marshall Sr., 100, of Roanoke will 
be Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with the 
Revs. Barry Cosper and Tim Craft officiating.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
   Mr. Marshall died Monday, May 25, at Randolph County Hospital after a short illness.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, he was born Jan. 23, 1898, son of John C. and 
Ada Sophronia Mobley Marshall.  He was a dairy farmer, a member of Pleasant Grove 
Baptist Church and the Randolph County Farmers Co-op Farm Service Agency; and he 
served on the Farmer's Home Association Committee.  Mr. Marshall was preceded in 
death by his wife, Mamie Lucille Marshall.
   Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Marshall Girardi of Elmira, N.Y., and Marie 
Marshall Cain of Roanoke; one son, Clarence Gilbert Marshall Jr. of Wadley; eight 
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Marshall will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 10 a.m. 
on Wednesday.
   Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
