OBITUARIES:

Willie W. Williamson

 (DADEVILLE) A graveside service for Willie W. Williamson, 90, of 
Dadeville, formerly of Randolph County, was Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, at 2 p.m. 
at Concord Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Gordon Taylor 
officiating.
 Mr. Williamson died Friday, Jan. 2, at Lakeshore Community Hospital in
Dadeville.
 A Randolph County native, he was born June 20, 1907, son of Algie O. and 
Mary E. Cole Williamson. He was a farmer and a member of Concord Primitive 
Baptist Church.
 Mr. Williamson is survived by one sister, Susie Hodnett of Dadeville.
 Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Lewis McManus

 (WOODLAND) Joseph Lewis McManus, 87, of Woodland died Tuesday, 
Dec. 30, 1997, at Bowdon Area Hospital after a short illness.
 The funeral service was Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek United
Methodist Church, with the Revs. Warren Wilder, Gary Henderson and Lee 
Parrish officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
 Survivors include his wife, Alice L. French McManus; one daughter, Judy
Parrish; two sons, Hobert McManus and Gerald McManus; one brother, Lowell
McManus, and two sisters-in-law, all of Woodland; nine grandchildren and 
11 great-grandchildren.
 Grandchildren served as pallbearers, and great-grandchildren served as
honorary pallbearers.
 Mr. McManus was a lifelong resident of Woodland, born May 16, 1910, son 
of Joseph and Mollie Rampy McManus. He was a member of Bear Creek United 
Methodist Church and had been to [the] custodian at Woodland School.

Velma Lena Gosdin

 (DOUGLASVILLE, Ga.) Velma Lena Gosdin, 85, of Douglasville, Ga., formerly 
of Bowdon, Ga., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997.
 She was born in Randolph County, Ala., June 29, 1913, daughter of the late
Joseph Bennie and Amanda Eliza Vowell Douglas. Mrs. Gosdin was a member of
Bowdon Baptist Church and the Joy Singers and was a custom drapery designer.
 Survivors include two daughters, Janice Sangster of Smyrna, Ga., and June 
Watkins of Marietta, Ga.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and
three sisters, Gleamer Yates, Elma Green and Jewell Whitmore, all of 
Woodland.
 The funeral service was Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Bowdon Baptist
Church, with Dr. Ron Huggins officiating. Music was furnished by the
congregation, Mary Frances Wilson, organist, and Mary Ella Beam, pianist. 
Pallbearers were Kent Watkins, Chris Watkins, Tim Hagar, Pete Green, Junior
Whitmore and Chad Whitmore. Interment was in Bowdon City Cemetery.
 Rainwater-West Funeral Home of Bowdon was in charge of arrangements.

Martha Ruth Burkes

 (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Martha Ruth Burkes, 85, of Roanoke was
Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Revs. Roger Woodard, Frank Sledge and Barry Cosper officiating. Burial was 
in Springfield Baptist Church Cemetery.
 Miss Burkes died Thursday, Jan. 1, at Stringfellow Hospital in Anniston.
 A Randolph County native, she was born Nov. 30, 1912, daughter of 
Thomas C. and Carrie Veal Burkes. She was a member of Springfield Baptist 
Church and had retired from work in the textile industry.
 Survivors include one sister, Ida B. Towler of Roanoke, and several nieces
and nephews.
 Pallbearers were J. R. Towler, Jamie Towler, Gary Burkes, Calvin Burkes,
Jimmy Boyd and Tim Boyd.

Douglas Eugene Johnson

 (FIVE POINTS) Douglas Eugene Johnson, 49, of Five Points died Thursday, 
Jan. 1, 1998, at his residence.
 He is survived by his wife, Pauline C. Johnson; four stepdaughters, Betty
Jean Freeman, Ruth Blair and Nellie Faye Wright of Five Points and Lynn 
Simons of Lanett; two stepsons, Clarence Mabry of Mountville, Ga., and John 
Simons of Roanoke; a sister, Sandra Brand of Valley; two grandchildren and 
two nephews.
 The funeral service was at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in
Valley at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, with the Rev. D. L. Roberson 
officiating.  Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
 Mr. Johnson was born in Troup County, Ga., Oct. 5, 1948, son of the late
Martha Moore Johnson and Federal Eugene Johnson. He was a member of New Hope
Assembly of God. He had been in declining health for the past several 
months.

Mattie Lee Mize

 (WEWAHITCHKA, Fla.) Mattie Lee Mize, 93, of Wewahitchka, Fla., formerly of
Morrison Crossroads, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 1997, at Columbia Gulf Coast 
Medical Center in Panama City, Fla.
 The funeral service was Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at Union Hill
Congregational Methodist Church, with the Revs. Earnest Lipham, Basil Key and
Larry Howard officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
 A Randolph County native, she was born Feb. 20, 1904, daughter of Johnny 
and Nancy Mize Daniel. She was a homemaker and a member of Union Hill
Congregational Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Henry Mize, and two sons, Dewey Mize and Harvel Mize.
 Survivors include a granddaughter, Brenda Humphrey of Wewahitchka; one
brother, Harvey Daniel of Atlanta; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren 
and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Scott Maddox, Denny Billiot, Donny Pate, David Pate, 
Dallas Mize and Sid Nelson. Honorary pallbearers were Cliford Mize, Jeffery 
Mize and Tony Billiot.

Anne Elizabeth Daniel

 (MORROW, Ga.) The funeral service for Anne Elizabeth "Annie" Daniel, 92, 
of Morrow, Ga., formerly of Roanoke, was Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at 11 a.m. 
at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Higgins officiating. Burial
followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mrs. Daniel died Sunday, Dec. 28, at Athena Rehab of Clayton in Lake City,
Ga.
 A former resident of Bacon Level Road, Roanoke, she was born May 30, 1905, 
at Rock Springs, daughter of Luther W. and Camilla Garner Waldrep. She was a
member of Morrow United Methodist Church and had retired from Handley Mills. 
Her husband, Elvie T. Daniel, preceded her in death.
 Survivors include a daughter, Nelda A. Dunson of Morrow; two 
grandchildren; a great-grandson; two sisters, Virginia Peterson of Chevy 
Chase, Md., and Myrtle Parrish of Roanoke; one brother, L. W. Waldrep of 
Valley; and several nieces and nephews.
 Pallbearers were Bruce Keeter, John Tilghman, John Gailey and Nicholas
Gailey.

Mary Frances Smith Rushton

 (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mary Frances Smith Rushton, 85, of LaGrange, Ga., died
Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after several
years of declining health.
 Mrs. Rushton was a native of Randolph County, Ala., born Dec. 22, 1912,
daughter of the late Charlie Albert and Vicie Lee Jones Smith. She was 
retired from Elm City Plant of Callaway Mills Company and had lived in 
LaGrange for the past 54 years. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, 
LaGrange.
 A graveside service was in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange, on Sunday, 
Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Doug McCart officiating.
 Surviving family members include three nieces, Susan F. Langford of 
LaGrange, June Ellis of Riverdale, Ga., and Ann Barlow of Dunedin, Fla.; one 
nephew, Dr. Richard A. Freeman of LaGrange; several great-nieces and nephews 
and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude L. 
Rushton.
 Those who desire may contribute to Second Baptist Church in memory of Mrs.
Rushton.

Lewis Billingsley

 (WEDOWEE) Lewis Billingsley, 86, of Wedowee died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, 
at Wedowee Hospital.
 The funeral service will be at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Newell, on
Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. E. S. Bolton, pastor, officiating. 
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
 Surviving are his wife, Ida Lee Billinglsey of Wedowee; two daughters, 
Merlie Foster of Atlanta and Vernelle Billingsley of Wedowee; two sons, 
Willie R. Billingsley and Travis L. Billingsley of Atlanta and a sister, 
Eva Madden of Woodland.
 Mr. Billingsley was a member of Montgomery Pride Masonic Lodge #107-A and 
Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Joe Anderson Walker

 (WEDOWEE) Joe Anderson Walker, 56, of Wedowee died Sunday, Jan. 4, 1998, 
at Golden Springs Nursing Home after an excellent illness.
 A graveside service was Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 10 a.m. at Wedowee City 
Cemetery, with the Rev. Tom Roberts officiating.
 Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Zema Walker of Wedowee; an aunt, 
Sarabell Walker of Wedowee; a brother, Jimmy Walker of Anniston; two nephews 
and a grand-nephew.
 Mr. Walker was a native of Randolph County, born Feb. 22, 1941, son of
Anderson Walker and Zema Dyar Walker. He was a member of Wedowee First 
United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Auburn University and served 
in the Alabama National Guard. Mr. Walker served on the town council from 
1972 until 1976. He owned and operated Walker's Department Store in Wedowee 
for many years.
 Pallbearers were Bob Moss, Dwight Bunn, Jimmie Gross, Mike Voss, Ken Bynum
and Ron Burson.
 In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wedowee
First United Methodist Adult Choir.

 (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Randall Joseph White, 43, of Columbus, Ga., formerly of
Randolph County, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at his residence.
 The services was [were] Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral
Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Jeton officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory
Gardens.
 Survivors include one daughter, Brandy Saylor of North Carolina, two sons,
Tony White and Chris White of Columbus; his mother, Florine White of Roanoke;
his father, Roy White of Valley; a great-great-grandmother, Etta Striblin of
Roanoke; two sisters, Regina Baldwin of Gainesville, Ga., and Tonya White of
Jacksonville; one brother, Tracy White of Gainesville, Ga.; and two
grandchildren.

Lawdy Douglas

 (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Lawdy "Mr. D" Douglas, 78, of Roanoke 
will be Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at 2 p.m., at Trinity Baptist Church, with 
the Revs. Barry Cosper, Frank Sledge, Bobby Kirby and Maynard McGinty 
officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
 Mr. Douglas died Sunday, Jan. 4, at Hospice of LaGrange after an extended
illness.
 A Randolph County resident, he was born April 10, 1919, in Gardner, Fla., 
son of Edward and Laura Belle Douglas. He was retired from the military and 
was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
 Survivors include his wife, Marie Slagle Douglas of Roanoke; two 
daughters, Gail Marie Boyd of Springfield, S.C., and Holly Howard of Roanoke; 
two sisters, Julia Mae Griffin of Hollywood, Fla., and Rosetta Douglas of 
Zolfo Springs, Fla.; four brothers, Laurice Douglas and Glenn Douglas of 
Zolfo Springs, Jack Douglas of Orlando, Fla., and Lloyd Douglas of Corpus 
Christi, Texas; and two grandchildren.
 The body will lie in state at the church beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
 Pallbearers will be Calvin Worthy, Ralph Wilder, Mike Potts, Rick Webb, 
Tim Whaley and Harold Cotter. Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Men's 
Sunday School Class.

Floyd Calvin Walker

 (FIVE POINTS) The graveside service for Floyd Calvin Walker, 92, of Five
Points was Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at 3 p.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke,
with the Rev. Kenneth Johnson officiating.
 Mr. Walker died Monday, Jan. 5, at Russell Hospital in Alexander City.
 A Chambers County resident, he was born April 21, 1905, in Tallapoosa 
County, son of George Woodrow and Alice Gertrude Walker. He was employed by 
Handley Mills in Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, and 
son, Jackson.
 Survivors include two sisters, Mattie Sheppard of Alexander City and
Elizabeth Screws of Wadley.

Ermer Lee Earl

 (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Ermer Lee Earl, 92, of Roanoke will be
Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Home Chapel, with 
the Rev. Maynard McGinty officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope 
Christian Church Cemetery.
 Mrs. Earl died Monday, Jan. 5, at Roanoke Health Care after an extended
illness.
 A lifelong Chambers County resident, she was born Feb. 7, 1905, daughter 
of William Lee and Eunice Green Clack. She was self employed in the grocery
business. She was preceeded [preceded] in death by her husband, Shaffer D.
Earl.
 Survivors include one daughter, Margaret L. Self of Roanoke; five
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
 The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to New Hope 
Christian Church.

Hershell Holliday

 (ROANOKE) Hershell Holliday, 86, of Roanoke died Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, 
at Hospice LaGrange in LaGrange, Ga.
 The funeral service will be Thursday, Jan. 8, at 1 p.m. Friendship Baptist
Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. Eric Ware and the Rev. Elijah Jackson Jr.
officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
 Survivors include his wife, Juanita Holliday of Roanoke, a son, Charlie
Edward Holliday of Atlanta; a daughter, Alice Houston of Roanoke; six
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Sarah Holliday, and a 
son, Richard Holliday.
 Visitation will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke, on 
Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The body will be placed in the 
church one hour before the funeral services.

 (DOUGLASVILLE, Ga.) A funeral service for Bertha Cleo Camp, 91, of
Douglasville, Ga., will be Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at 1 p.m. at Wedowee 
First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Yancy Sanders officiating. 
Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Malone.
 Mrs. Camp died Monday, Jan. 5, at Garden Terrace Nursing Home in
Douglasville.
 A Randolph County native, she was born, July 11, 1906, daughter of John B.
and Martha Wilkerson. She was a homemaker and a member of Malone United
Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Andrew J. Camp.
 Survivors include three sons, Wallace H. Camp of Ellenwood, Ga., Bobby C.
Camp of Douglasville and Billy R. Camp of Winston, Ga.; one sister Marie 
Langley of Lanett; one brother Pelham Wilkerson of LaGrange, Ga.; six 
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

OBITUARIES:

Arthur Aubrey Freeman

 (WADLEY) Funeral services for Arthur Aubrey Freeman, 53, of Wadley were
Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at 3:30 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the
Revs. Tim Whaley and Larry Cosper officiating. Burial was in Wadley 
Cemetery.
 Mr. Freeman died Friday, Jan. 9, at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in
Birmingham after a short illness.
 A lifelong Wadley resident, he was born Nov. 18, 1944, son of William Otis
and Julian Birdier Freeman. He was an Air Force veteran. He worked as an
insurance agent for Modern Woodmen of America. Mr. Freeman was a member of
Mountain Springs Baptist Church, the VFW, and Wadley Quarterback Club, and
served as a trustee for Wadley School.
 Survivors include his wife, Mildred Edmondson Freeman of Wadley, one
daughter, Debbie Reaves of LaFayette, one son, John Freeman of Wadley, two
grandchildren, one sister, Loretta Erwin of Wadley; and a brother, Argus 
Freeman of Wadley.
 Pallbearers were Harl White, Gerson Bonner, Bill Brown, Wayne Stephens,
Johnny Sanders, David Daniel and Herman Landers. Members of the Wadley High
School Class of 1962 served as honorary pallbearers.

Virginia Pike Houze

 (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Virginia Pike Houze, 79, of Roanoke was
Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Hugh Compton officiating. Burial was at Forest Home Cemetery.
 Mrs. Houze died Wednesday, Jan. 6, at West Georgia Medical Center in
LaGrange.
 A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 3, 1918, 
daughter of Jack and Ollie Pike. She was retired from Palm Beach Company and 
was a member of Rock Mills United Methodist Church. She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Winford Houze.
 Survivors include one daughter, Gloria Cown of Roanoke; one son, Larry 
Houze of Roanoke; half-sisters Julia Koon of Douglasville, Ga., and Joyce 
Bowman of Hickory, N.C.; half-brothers, John Emery Pike of Springfield, 
Tenn., and James Pike of Franklin, Ga.; five grandchildren; and five great-
grandchildren.
 The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Rock 
Mills United Methodist Church, PO Box 3070, Rock Mills, AL 36274.
 Pallbearers were Harold Hall, Ronnie Crockett, Jimmy Koon, Bryan Bowman,

Annie Lois Wingo Lucas

 (HEARD COUNTY, Ga.) The funeral service for Annie Lois Wingo Lucas, 94, of
Heard County, Ga., was Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at 3 p.m. at Bethel Christian
Church in Heard County. The Revs. Theo Arnett and Kenneth Johnson 
officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery. Special music was provided 
by Mrs. Elaine McLain on the piano and Mrs. Leesa Stutts Cothran with vocal 
selections.
 Serving as pallbearers were Chris Keel, Jerry Keel, Leon Chapion, Oliver
Wingo, Junior Taylor, Carlton Hannah, Jimmy Starnes and Sonny Lindenmuth.
 Mrs. Lucas was born June 13, 1903, in Heard County, daughter of the late 
W. A. "Billy" and Lucetta Williamson Wingo. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Zach Gunn Lucas; two infant daughters; four brothers; five sisters; 
one grandson; two great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. 
Mrs. Lucas was a lifelong resident of Heard County and was a member of Paran
Missionary Baptist Church.
 Survivors include a daughter, Hazel Allen; two granddaughters; a sister,
Lillian Brown; five great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and 
many other relatives and friends.

Beulah Ruth Steen

 (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Beulah Ruth Steen, 63, of Woodland were
Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.
Gary Baugh officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mrs. Steen died Friday, Jan. 9, at Cherokee Baptist Medical Center in 
Centre.
 A Randolph County native and former LaFayette resident, she was born 
Sept. 4, 1934, daughter of Henry and Lula Thomas Stillwell. She was a 
homemaker.
 Survivors include three daughters, Mary Virginia Brewster of Leesburg, 
Debra Joyce Smith of Roanoke and April Kay McCollough of Newell; four sons, 
James Thomas Bailey of Millbrook, Michael Ray Bailey of New Site, Dennis 
Richard Bailey of Abilene, Texas, and George Brant Steen of Glenn, Ga.; 
13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Myrtle Brand 
of Rock Mills, Annie Mae Miller of Opelika and Myrtis Desear of Bradleton, 
Fla.
 Grandsons served as pallbearers: David James Bailey, Daniel Gene Bailey,
Donald Ray Lowery, Jeffery Lee Mills, James Ray Bailey and Jason Brant 
Bailey.

Mildred Reynolds Smith

 (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mildred Reynolds Smith, 82, of LaGrange, Ga., died Friday,
Jan. 9, 1998, at Hospice LaGrange after a brief illness.
 Mrs. Smith was a native of Chattanooga, Tenn., born Sept. 25, 1915, 
daughter of the late William Joseph and Lovie Duke Reynolds. She was a 1932 
graduate of Handley High School in Roanoke before moving to LaGrange. She 
retired from Callaway Mills Company and also was employed by Brian Center 
Nursing Care. She was a member of Grace Fellowship and a former Sunday 
school teacher at Dunson United Methodist Church.
 The funeral service was at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, on 
Sunday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Burt H. Hunter officiating. 
Interment was in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange.
 Surviving are one daughter, Paula Ann Smith of LaGrange; three sons, 
Hills A. Smith Jr., Vernon M. Smith and Jack Reynolds Smith of LaGrange; 
five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and 
nephews.

Franklin, Ga., was Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at 2 p.m. CST from Quattlebaum 
Funeral Chapel in Roanoke, with the Revs. Mark Barlow, Bobby Kirby and Gerald 
Sheppard officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens near Rock Mills.
 Mr. Bassett died Friday, Jan. 9, at West Georgia Medical Center in 
LaGrange following a brief illness.
 A lifelong resident of Franklin, he was born Jan. 8, 1935, in Randolph
County, son of Woodrow Wilson and Vera Bassett. He had been self-employed as 
a carpenter and was a member of Paran Baptist Church.
 Survivors include his wife, Faye Endress Bassett of Franklin; three sons,
James Rodney Bassett and Malcom Bassett of Wadley and Jason Bassett of 
Franklin; one brother, B. J. Bassett of Roberta, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Roger Rose, Roy Watts, Shirley Sanders, James Burch, 
Chris Fuller, Robert Ellis, Wayne Brown, Earl Hopson and Jimmy Russell.

 (LANETT) S. L. Heard, 60, of Lanett died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at West
Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
 Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dessar Hill Heard; a sister, Marian Gamache 
of Lakeland, Fla.; and a niece.
 Graveside services were at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11 at Johnson Memorial
Gardens, with the Rev. Russell Dean officiating.
 Mr. Heard was a native of Randolph County, born June 11, 1937, son of the
late Ruby G. Arrington Heard and Clarence Clinton Heard. He was formerly
employed with Langley Motors, West Point Ford, and the City of Lanett and was
self-employed as a mechanic for many years.
 Memorial contributions may be made to the Lanett First Baptist Church
Elevator Fund.

 (CONYERS, Ga.) Dorsey Christopher "Chris" Yarbrough, 46, of Conyers, Ga.,
formerly of Randolph County, died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in Conyers.
 Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Hill 
Methodist Church, Wadley, with the Rev. Zenus Windsor officiating. Burial 
was in the adjoining cemetery.
 Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Yarbrough of Conyers; a son, Joey 
Glenn Yarbrough of Conyers; and three brothers, Jerry H. Yarbrough of 
Mansfield, Ga., Virgil W. Yarbrough of Ogden, Utah, and Jake Paul Yarbrough 
of Logansville, Ga.
 Mr. Yarbrough was a native of Troup County, Ga., born Feb. 28, 1951, son 
of Paul J. Yarbrough and Dorothy L. Clegg. He had worked in the food 
industry for 22 years and was Protestant by faith. He was preceded in death 
by a son, Kenneth Bryan Yarbrough. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
 Pallbearers were Larry Roughton, Jeff Yarbrough, Ragan Spurlin, Lester
Robinson, Joel Yarbrough and Terry Roughton.

 (VALLEY) Sinie M. Smith, 87, of Valley died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, at 
Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
 Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Betty Carole Duffey of Valley; a 
son, Larry E. Smith of Valley; two brothers, Nolen McClain of Valley and Paul 
McClain of Lanett; a half-sister, Myrtie Tittle of Huguley; three half-
brothers, Carl McClain, David McClain and Roy McClain; nine grandchildren and 
14 great-grandchildren.
 Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in 
Valley at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, with burial in Langdale Cemetery. The Rev. 
Lynn McClain, Dr. Jerome King and the Rev. Neal Norman officiated.
 Mrs. Smith was born in Randolph County Sept. 26, 1910. She was a faithful
member of Faith Baptist Church and a devoted mother and grandmother. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Eugene A. Smith.

 (BALCH SPRING[S], Texas) Mary Louise Cavender Robinson, 74, of Balch 
Springs, Texas, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998. Ms. Robinson was born on April 
24, 1923, in Roanoke, Ala. She was a member of the White Rock Lions Club.
 She is survived by her daughter, Dinah Miller; three sons, Don Lambert,
Joseph Robinson and Roy Robinson; her brother, Ford Cavender; nine 
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 
her parents and two brothers, Charles and Gordon Cavender.
 Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral
Home's Rockwall (Texas) Chapel, with Dr. Bob Reeves officiating.
 Pallbearers were Donnie Logan, Gary Don Lambert, Joseph Robinson III, 
Jason Lambert, Randy Miller and Vincent Logan. Honorary pallbearers were 
Billy Lambert, Trey Miller, Brad Reed and Stewart Haberle.

 (PHENIX CITY) Imodene Frances Allums, 65, of Phenix City, died Saturday, 
Jan. 10, 1998, at her residence.

City, with interment at Lakeview Memory Gardens.
 Mrs. Allums was born May 16, 1932, in Randolph County, daughter of the 
late Lillie Wiggins Mathews and Louis Mathews of Woodland.
 Survivors other than her father include her husband, Edward "Ed" Allums of
Phenix City; a son, Jimmy Willingham of Ruston, La.; two sister[s], Dolly
Pollard of Woodland and Linda Edwards of Smiths; and one grandchild.

 (LANETT) Cleo E. Brown, 81, of Lanett died Wednesday, Jan 7, 1998, at 
Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
 Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Mattie B. Brown; one daughter, Jane
Carlisle of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; one son Jack Brown of Lanett; two sisters, 
Sara Workman of Elmore and Sue Johnson of Roanoke; six grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
 The funeral service was at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in
Valley at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery. The 
Rev. Mike Hawkins officiated.
 Mr. Brown was a native of Randolph County, born Feb. 20, 1916, son of the
late Elsie Owens Brown and Warner Brown. He was a veteran of World War II,
where he served with the US Army. He was a retired employee of West Point
Pepperell's Lanett Mill and had been married for the past 55 years. He was a
member of Lanier Baptist Church.

 (MOBILE) Carrie Virginia Hutto, 96, a native of Wayneboro, Miss., and a
longtime resident of Mobile, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in a Pensacola 
Health Care Facility.
 Mrs. Hutto was preceded in death by her husband, D. Sheppard Hutto. She 
is survived by three daughters, Jewel Hutto McGann of Saraland, Margaret 
Hutto Kennedy of Fairhope, and Elsie Hutto Rich of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a sister, 
Blieka Henderson of Cantonment, Fla., five grandchildren, including Joe 
Halker of Roanoke; seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other 
relatives.

Home on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m.

 Mrs. Wadsworth died Sunday, Jan. 11, at Spaulding Regional Hospital in
Griffin after an extended illness.
 A former resident of Roanoke, she was born Nov. 23, 1920, in Randolph 
County, daughter of Loyd C. and Sallie Brown. She had been self-employed as 
a beautician and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Jack W. Wadsworth.
 Survivors include two sons, Jack B. Wadsworth of Griffin, Ga., and Richard
Carl Wadsworth of Zebulon, Ga.; two sisters, Geneva Bartlett of West Point, 
Ga., and Geraldine Coggins of Conyers, Ga.; one brother, Harold Brown of 
Foley; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

 (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Berma White Kirby, 64, of Roanoke were
Friday, Jan 16, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Johnny

 Mrs. Kirby died Thursday, Jan. 15, at University Hospital in Birmingham 
after a brief illness.
 A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, she was born May 30, 1933,
daughter of Homer and Rettie Pool White. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant
Baptist Church and had been employed with Palm Beach Company.
 Survivors include her husband, Joe Kirby of Roanoke; one daughter, Shelia
Boyd of Roanoke; and one granddaughter, Valerie Boyd of Roanoke.

 Mrs. Thornton was born July 18, 1919, in Randolph County, daughter of the

John Baxter "J. B." Stevenson

 (ROANOKE) John Baxter "J. B." Stevenson II, 17, of Roanoke died early
Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile
accident.
 The funeral service was Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. at Roanoke First 
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tex Ergle officiating. Burial followed 
at Cedarwood Cemetery.
 He was born in Roanoke Jan. 9, 1981, son of John W. and Rachelle 
Stevenson. J. B. was a member of the junior class and a multi-sport athlete 
at LaGrange Academy, LaGrange, Ga. He was a member of Roanoke First United 
Methodist Church.
 Survivors include his parents; his grandparents, Jim and Beverly Glessner 
of Healdsburg, Calif.; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Wilson of Roanoke and Ersula Thompson of Woodland; two brothers, Edmond 
Messer of Gadsden and Curtis Messer of Woodland; and five grandchildren.

 A Randolph County native, Mr. Messer was born Oct. 21, 1920, son of Kirk

Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Lynch and a 
son, Gary Bryant Messer.

 (LANETT) Eugene A. Williams, 75, of Lanett died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at
his home.
 The funeral service was Thursday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m. at Lanett First
Christian Church with the Revs. Rudolph Leak and Howard Merchant officiating. 
Burial was at Resthaven Cemetery.
 A native of Chambers County, Mr. Williams was born Feb. 21, 1922, to 
Alonza and Thelma Bardette Williams. He was a graduate of Chambers County 
High School and a veteran of World War II, where he served with the U.S. 
Coast Guard. Mr. Williams retired from West Point Pepperell's Lanett Mill in 
1987, after 40 years of service with the company. He was a member of Lanett 
First Christian Church, where he served as a deacon, and a member of the 
American Legion.
 Survivors include his wife, Betty Adams Williams; a son, Michael Williams 
of Lanett; two daughters, Linda J. Hardy of Valley and Stephanie W. Parker of
Acworth, Ga.; a brother, Calvin Williams of Roanoke; a sister, Mattie Ruth

Eddie B. Hull

 (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Eddie b. Hull, 56, of Wedowee will be at 
2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Byron Waldrop officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist 
Church Cemetery.
 Mr. Hull died Saturday, Jan. 24, at his residence. Survivors include his
father, Ed Hull of Wedowee; a sister, Jean H. Parker of Franklin, Ga.; a 
niece, Alice Nix of Lineville; and two half-sisters, Gladys Leundowski of 
Tampa, Fla., and Alma Wheeler of Dublin, Ga.
 Pallbearers will be John Parker, James Keel, Clarence Nix, Walter Lindsey,
Harold Lindsey, Junior Holloway and Jim Moncus.
 The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, until
time of services on Wednesday.

Archie Lee Nimon

 (WEDOWEE) Archie Lee Nimon, 67, of Wedowee, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at
his residence.
 Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m., at Benefield Funeral 
Chapel with the Rev. Ray Clevenger officiating. Burial followed in the 
Dinglers Chapel Cemetery.
 Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Gill Nimon of Wedowee; two 
daughters, Rose Mary Nimon of Wedowee and Lillie Rudean Nimon Cosper of Waco, 
Ga.; six sons, George Nimon and Edward Nimon of Heflin and Seburn Nimon, 
Thomas Nimon, Kenneth Nimon and Nicholus Nimon, all of Roanoke; his mother 
Una Pearl Jeffers of Lineville; four grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren; and one sister, Mae Miles of Lineville.
 Mr. Nimon was a native of Polk County, Ga., born March 11, 1930, the son 
of Oscar Nimon and Una Pearl King. Mr. Nimon had worked in the timber 
industry and was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosie Lee Johnson, and 
a brother, Ed Nimon.
 Pallbearers were George Nimon, Seburn Nimon, Thomas Nimon, Kenneth Nimon,
Nicholus Nimon and Joe Brown.
 Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee, Alabama was in charge of the 
arrangements.

Leroy Adamson

 (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Leroy Adamson, 65, of Roanoke were Monday,
Jan. 26, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Bethany Lime Congregational Christian Church, 
with the Revs. Graham Norris and Stanley Yarbrough officiating. Burial was 
at the church cemetery.
 Mr. Adamson died Sunday, Jan. 25, at his home after an extended illness.
 A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, he was born Feb. 6, 1932, 
son of Cullman and Ruby Truitt Adamson. He was a World War II veteran and a 
member of Bethany Lime Church.
 Survivors include his wife, Mevline Calhoun Adamson; one son, Chuck 
Thompson; two brothers, Milam Adamson and Wayne Adamson, all of Roanoke; 
two grandson and one great-grandson.
 Pallbearers were Barry Harlin, Donnie Harlin, Randall Harlin, Willis 
Adamson, Tommy Adamson and Dennis Adamson. The men of the church served 
as honorary pallbearers.

Sharon Elaine Weathers

 (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Sharon Elaine Weathers, 42, of Roanoke will 
be Thursday, Jan 29, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with 
the Revs. Floyd Akins and Tim Whaley officiating. Burial will follow in the 
church cemetery.
 Mrs. Weathers died suddenly Monday, Jan. 26 at University Hospital in
Birmingham.
 A longtime Lanett resident, she was a Chambers County native, born 
Sept. 11, 1955, daughter of Mather Leon and Betty W. Wright Gordon. She was 
a member of Happy Valley Baptist Church in Lanett and worked as a truck 
driver with Vaughn Cartage.
 Survivors include her husband, James Weathers of Roanoke; two daughters,
Stephanie Elaine Christian and Stacy Allaine Sorrells of Roanoke; one son 
Jimmy Weathers of Franklin, Ga.; her parents, Mather and Betty Gordon of 
Lanett; one sister, Patsy Elliott of Riverview; two brothers, Marshall Gordon 
of Jackson, Miss., and Jeffrey G. Gordon; and four grandchildren.
 The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 3 to 9 p.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 28. Mrs. Weathers will lie in state at the church for one 
hour beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
 Friends and relatives will serve as pallbearers.

Iva Ann Butler

 (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Iva Ann Butler, 100, of Carrollton, Ga., formerly of
Bowdon, Ga., died Monday, Jan. 27 [sic - 26], 1998.
 She was born in Randolph County, Ala., Nov. 6, 1897, daughter of the late 
J. L. and Louise Ann Stewart Rampy. Mrs. Butler was a lifelong resident of 
this area, a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church, Woodland, and a 
homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Merrell Butler, and a 
son, Ridley Butler.
 Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Myrtie Butler of Bowdon; 
two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
 Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek United
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lavelle Reynolds and the Rev. Warren Wilder
officiating. Music was by the church choir. Pallbearers were Deroy Butler,
Frank Campbell, Paul Butler, Bob Butler and W. A. Butler. Interment was in 
the church cemetery.

Frank Miles

 (STANDING ROCK) Funeral services for Frank Miles, 79, of Standing Rock 
will be Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, 
with the Rev. S. T. Janney officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph 
Memory Gardens.
 Mr. Miles died Monday, Jan. 26, at his son's home in Valley.
 A Randolph County native, he was born Dec. 23, 1918, son of Walter and 
Ellen Hadley Miles. He was a World War II army veteran, a member of Standing 
Rock Methodist Church and had retired from West Point Pepperell. He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Harvel Miles.
 Survivors include one daughter, Opal Wingo of LaGrange, Ga.; one son, 
Claxton Miles of Valley; two brothers, Jack Miles of Wedowee and Collie Miles 
of LaGrange; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Billy Askew

 (ROANOKE) Deacon Billy Askew, 59, of Roanoke died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, 
at University Hospital in Birmingham.
 Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills 
Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lonnie B. Houston and the Rev. Quintin E. Tibbs
officiating. Burial will be in the Wehadkee Baptist Church Cemetery.
 Survivors include his mother, Ruthie Askew of Roanoke; his wife, Ruby 
Askew of Roanoke; a daughter, Vanessa Askew of Roanoke; two stepsons, Ronald 
Banks and Andre' Banks of Roanoke; a guardian son, Charles Chappell Jr. of 
Auburn; and two uncles. He was preceded in death by his father, Jessie 
Askew.
 The body will be placed in the church one hour before service.
