Maria Annette Staples

   (WADLEY) Maria Annette Staples, 33, of Cooledge Street, Wadley, died Monday, 
Feb. 27, 2006, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services will be Monday, March 6, at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with the Rev. Gregory Scott and the Rev. Cornelius Reese officiating. 
Burial will be in Cogar Hill C.M.E. Church Cemetery.
  Survivors include her father, Jerry Byrdsong of Wadley; her mother, Juanita 
Reese of Roanoke; three sons, Kelsey Staples, Karry Staples and Kameron Staples 
all of Wadley; four brothers, Stacy Byrdsong of Columbus, Ohio, and Steven 
Byrdsong, Robert Byrdsong and Christopher Byrdson[g] all of Wadley; two sisters, 
Pamela Johnson and Latrice Byrdsong of Wadley; and a special friend, Shameka 
Woodgett of Wadley.
   Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service from 10 a.m. until 6 
p.m. Sunday. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.

John Thomas Clack

   (ROANOKE) Services for John Thomas Clack, 49, of Roanoke will be Friday, 
March 3, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Frank 
Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on 
Thursday.
   Mr. Clack died Monday, Feb. 27,, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Survivors include his fiance, Tonya Fuller of Roanoke; two daughters, Jessica 
Laine Clack and Sara Louise Fuller, both of Roanoke; his parents, Thomas and 
Sigrid Clack of Pierre, S.D.; one sister, Jackie Clack Hansen of Pierre; and 
several aunts, uncles and cousins.
   Pallbearers will be David Satterwhite, Tim Satterwhite, Oakley Brown, Steve 
Barnes, Kevin Walker and Barry Walker.
   Mr. Clack was born Aug. 22, 1956, son of Thomas Bryan and Sigrid Clack. He 
was supervisor at Southwire.

Jean Shivers Hopewell

  (TALLADEGA) Jean Shivers Hopewell, 77, of Talladega died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 
2006, in Talladega.
   Mrs. Hopewell was a native of Wadley, born June 3, 1928. She was a homemaker.
  Survivors include two daughters, Nancy H. Campbell of Talladega and Lynda H. 
Peters of Richardson, Texas; and two sons, William C. Hopewell of Oneonta and 
David P. Hopewell of Harrodsburg, Ky.
   Services were held Friday, Feb. 24, with burial at Pine Hill Memorial Park in 
Talladega.

James William Foster

   (ATLANTA) James William Foster, 80, of Atlanta died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, 
at South Fulton Medical Center, East Point, Ga.
   Mr. Foster was born Dec. 22, 1925, in Randolph County, son of the late John 
Wesley Foster and Mattie Lou Barfield Foster.  He was a resident of Troup County 
and Fulton County, Ga.  Mr Foster was a charter member of Forest Home Christian 
Church in Roanoke.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Virginia 
Louise Davis Foster, who he said "was the greatest woman on the face of the 
earth and he could not have had any better." Mr. Foster was raised on Pine Hill 
Fox Hound Farm. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, where he served on the Presidential 
Flagship Augusta C-31 Heavy Cruiser, the vessel on which Roosevelt and Churchill 
met for the war conference on Aug. 7, 1941. Mr. Foster attended Perry Business 
College. He loved the Braves and was a University of Georgia football fan. He 
was employed in the cotton mill industry of LaGrange, Ga., Southern Railway in 
Atlanta and then in cosmetology, where he received numerous awards and trophies 
around Georgia. He was an avid coon and squirrel hunter, snapping turtle 
fisherman and an accomplished gardener, especially fruits and vegetables. He 
also was an antique car enthusiast and loved tinkering with 1930s cars.
   Survivors include his children, Thereshia Foster of Atlanta, Maria Knowles of 
Fayetteville, Ga., Jamie Foster of St. Simons Island, Ga., Pam Labbie of 
Lilburn, Ga., and Jody Foster of Douglasville, Ga.; seven grandchildren and 
three great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Pendergrass of Union City, Ga., Neva 
Talley, Helen Hazel and Sarah Mickel of LaGrange, Louise Flynt of North Georgia 
and Ann Nelson of Atlanta.
   Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Forest Home Christian Church with 
burial following in the church cemetery.
   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Forest Home Christian 
Church, Roanoke, for the new dining hall.

Dorsey L. Ussery
 
   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Dorsey L. Ussery, 82, of LaGrange, Ga., died Saturday, Feb. 
25, 2006, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Mr. Ussery was born April 24, 1923, in Wedowee, son of the late James Robert 
and Susie Lee Lester Ussery. He had lived in LaGrange most of his life and was a 
member of Baptist Tabernacle. Mr. Ussery was retired from Dunson Mill division 
of West Point Pepperell. He served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne 
during World War II. He served at both the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy 
invasion, where he earned several medals, including the Silver Star and Bronze 
Star. He was also a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars.
   Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Guin Ussery of LaGrange; two sons, 
Jimmy D. of Jonesboro, Ga., and Tom Ussery of Talking Rock; three grandchildren 
and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in 
death by his first two wives, Opal Ussery and Ruby Ussery.
   Services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel 
with the Rev. Frank Sledge and the Rev. Jimmy McMillian officiating. Interment 
followed at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

   (WEDOWEE) Saul Thomas Jr., 56, of County Road 33, Wedowee, died Sunday, Feb. 
19, 2006, at his home.
   Services were Friday, Feb. 24, at 1 p.m. at Weathers Heights Church of 
Christ, Wedowee, with Bro. Henry Nelson officiating.
   Survivors include his mother, Fannie Maude Thomas of Wedowee; a son, Cedric 
Thomas of Atlanta; a daughter, Tara Thomas of Atlanta; and four brothers, Billy 
Knight, Denver Berry and Quentin Berry of Wedowee and Sandy Berry of Phenix 
City.

Luther James Burden

   (ROANOKE) Luther James Burden, 55, of 730 Chestnut Street, Roanoke, died 
Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at Hospice LaGrange, LaGrange, Ga.
  Services will be Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist 
Church at Bacon Level. Bishop C. Wilkes and the Rev. Calvin Trammell will 
officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Delois Burden of Roanoke; two daughters, Pamela 
Franklin of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Yolanda Lopez of Fayetteville, N.C.; his 
father, Luther Burden of Roanoke; two brothers, Karry Burden and Phillip Burden 
of Roanoke; a sister, Gwendolyn Phillips of LaGrange; and six grandchildren. He 
was preceded in death by his mother, Francis McPherson; a brother, Roosevelt 
Burden; and a sister, Fannie Burden.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.

Juliabel Jennings

   (HEFLIN) A memorial service for Juliabel Jennings, 85, of Heflin was at noon 
on Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel with a eulogy presented 
by Pam Jeffers.
   Mrs. Jennings died Thursday, Feb. 23, at Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   She is survived by one daughter, Cindy McLeroy of Anniston; one son, Don 
Jennings of Houston, Texas; one sister, Lera Mae Bailey of Anniston; one 
brother, Bill Ford of Oxford; ten grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; 
and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Jennings was a native of Wedowee, but lived in Anniston most all of her 
life. She resided in Heflin for the past 20 years and was retired from K-Mart in 
Stone Mountain, Ga.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Big Oak Boys

Cora Lee Armitage

  (PIEDMONT) Services for Cora Lee Armitage, who would have been 98 on Saturday, 
of Piedmont, were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at Thompson Funeral Home 
with the Rev. Jack Morgan officiating. Burial followed in Union Grove Cemetery.
   Mrs. Armitage died Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital.
   Survivors include three daughters, Frances Gowens of Piedmont, Joyce Freeman 
of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Jewell Smith of Munford; two sons, Thomas Armitage of 
Cave Spring, Ga., and Olen Armitage of Roanoke; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-
grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and many special step-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tommy Gowens, Garry Shaw, Darren Armitage, Keith McCord, 
Jonathan Ferrell and Brannan Armitage.
   Mrs. Armitage was a native and resident of the Piedmont area most of her 
life. She was a member of Rock Run Baptist Church, was a homemaker and a loving 
mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie 
Armitage; a daughter, Dot Shaw; her parents, John and Liza Hayth; and two 
brothers, Sammy Hayth and James Hayth.

Antoinette D. 'Nana' Montain

   (LINEVILLE) Memorial services for Antoinette D. "Nana" Montain, 90, of 
Lineville were Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Hepsabah Baptist Church, with 
Dr. Stephen Dempsey officiating.
   Mrs. Montain died Thursday, Feb. 23, at Wedowee Hospital after a long 
illness. She was a native of Connecticut and a former resident of Florida, 
having moved to Randolph County in 1985. She had been living in Lineville for 
the past three years. She was a retired factory worker, homemaker and member of 
Hepsabah Baptist Church.
   She is survived by one daughter, Antoinette "Toni" Atwater of Lineville; four 
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to 
Hepsabah Baptist Church Youth Fund, P.O. Box 433, Heflin, AL 36264.

Patricia Ann Sanders Ray

   (ROANOKE) Services for Patricia Ann Sanders Ray, 55, of Roanoke were Friday,

and the Rev. Russell Williams officiating. Burial followed at Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
   Mrs. Ray died Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Columbus Medical Center.
   Survivors include her husband, Ed Ray of Roanoke; one daughter, Sandy Daniel 
of Roanoke; two step-daughters, Marsha Teel of Opelika and Judy Bennett of 
Wadley; a step-son, Bruce Ray of Woodland; a brother, Bobby Joe Sanders of 
Marysville, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.
   Mrs. Ray was born April 6, 1950, daughter of Robert and Etta Lee Cole 
Sanders. She was Baptist by faith and had been employed with Propex.

Melvin Bruce Seymour

  (ANNISTON) Services for Melvin Bruce Seymour, 50, of Anniston, were Friday, 
Feb. 24, 2006, at noon at Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel.
Mr. Seymour died Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham.
   Survivors include his wife, Laurie K. Seymour; a son, Brandon Trey Seymour; 
three stepchildren, Jordon B. Hamilton, Patrick B. Hamilton and Jason B. 
Hamilton; his mother and stepfather, Jonnie Kate Smith and Charlie; a sister, 
Sherrie Glenn; a brother, Barron Seymour; three nephews, two nieces; one aunt 
and one cousin.
   Mr. Seymour was a native of Randolph County and a member of Pleasant Grove 
Baptist Church of Wadley.

Mervin Jackson Beasley

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Mervin Jackson "Turkey" Beasley, 64, of Wedowee were 
Friday, Feb. 18, 2006, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Rev. 
Roger Hammett officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Beasley died Thursday, Feb. 16, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Survivors include his wife, Sheila Hall Beasley of Wedowee; two daughters, 
Michelle Beasley of Dearing, Ga., and Heather Shead of Villa Rica, Ga.; two 
sons, Ricky Carter of Winder, Ga., and Chris Beasley of Dearing; one brother, 
James Beasley of Thomason, Ga.; and eight grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Terry Shead, Paul Watson, Billy Cox, Jim Wilburn, Rusty 
Dobson and Paul Frye.
   Mr. Beasley was a native of Crenshaw County, born Dec. 24, 1941, son of 
Beeland and Emiie Davis Beasley. He was retired as a truck driver for over 35 
years.

Gussie Moore Heflin

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mrs. Gussie Moore Heflin, 97, of LaGrange, Ga., died Monday, 
Feb. 20, 2006, at her home.
   Mrs. Heflin was born Aug. 23, 1908, in Red River Valley, Texas, daughter of 
the late Reeves and Mary Marable Moore. She grew up in the Level Road community 
of Randolph County. She had lived in LaGrange since 1929, and with her husband, 
Robert Stell Heflin, operated  Heflin's Auto Parts for 38 years. In addition to 
her husband, Mrs. Heflin was preceded in death by two children, Virginia Hood 
and Rita Lyons.
   Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Barnes of Diamond Head, Miss., and 
Janice Johnston of LaGrange; two sons, Thomas Vanell "Deak" Heflin and James Guy 
"Sam" Heflin of LaGrange; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and five 
great-great-grandchildren.
   Services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 
LaGrange Chapel with the Rev. Don Ellison officiating. Burial followed at 
Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery in Randolph County.

Amos Gay Jr.

   (ROANOKE) Amos Gay Jr., 84, of 312 East Avenue, Roanoke, died Friday, March 
3, 2006, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
  Services will be Wednesday, March 8, at 1 p.m. at Wehadkee Missionary Baptist 
Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. Elijah Jackson Jr. and Pastor Vandeon Griffin 
officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include four daughters, Mary Gay, Patricia Adaio, Emma Gay and 
Jacqueline Foster, all of Anniston; a stepdaughter, Penny McClendon of Roanoke; 
a stepson, James Bell of Roanoke; special friend, Macy Bell of Roanoke; 10 
grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, 
Emma Ruth Gay; and a brother, Leonard Gay.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.

Sunday, March 5, 2006, at her home.

Street, Roanoke, with the Rev. Gilbert E. Staples and the Rev. Benjamin Little 
officiating. Burial will be in Rock Mills Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Survivors include her mother, Janice Rosser of Roanoke; her father, Amos 
Boddie Sr. of Roanoke; her adopted father, Douglass McArthur Heard of Newnan, 
Ga.; a son, Carlos Phillips of Anniston; a daughter, Lashonta Phillips of 
Anniston; three brothers, Michael Kilpatrick and Amos Boddie Jr. of Roanoke and 
Rodney Miller of Atlanta; and eight sisters, Kim Weaver of Anniston, Michelle 
Heard and Tyronica Dunson of Roanoke, Tedra Carlisle of Five Points, Gwendolyn 
Boddie, Quinnette Cousin, Shonta Ware and Christa Boddie of Atlanta; a fiance, 
Phinizy Tabb. She was preceded in death by a sister, Arneta Heard.

Charlie Wade Barnes

   (ROANOKE) Services for Charlie Wade Barnes, 77, of Roanoke were Wednesday, 
March 1, 2006, at Sweet Home Baptist Church in Five Points, with the Revs. Allen 
Simpson, L.B. Houston, James T. Barnes and Walter L. Barnes officiating. 
Interment was in Skyview Memorial Gardens.
   Mr. Barnes died Thursday, Feb. 23, at the residence of his brother, Mr. and 
Mrs. James Barnes of Roanoke.
   Mr. Barnes is survived by his daughter, Joyce Reed-Williams of LaGrange, Ga.; 
a step-daughter, Jessie Lemerle Cospy-Freeman of Atlanta; a brother, James 
Barnes of Roanoke; two sisters, Georgia Mae Trammell of Roanoke and Alice 
Roberson of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 
four great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Barnes was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church and the True Brothers 
and Sisters of Love and Charity Lodge in Fredonia. He was preceded in death by 
his wife, Cornelia Louise Monagan Barnes.

Sammy Roy Huey

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Sammy Roy Huey, 56, of Wedowee were Monday, March 6, 
2006, at 2 p.m. at Noonday Christian Church, with the Rev. Harold Bonner 
officiating. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Huey died Saturday, March 4, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika 
following an extended illness.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Huey was born Aug. 3, 1949, son of the late Roy 
Doug Huey and Mary Lou Wilder Huey. He had been employed with Randolph County in 
the engineering and road department. He loved his friends, his family and Auburn 
football.
   Survivors include his wife, Jeannie Spradlin Huey of Wedowee; two sons, Heath 
Huey and Derrick Huey of Wedowee; his mother, Mary Lou Huey of Wedowee; three 
sisters, Judy Kirby of Roanoke, Jane Brown of Woodland and Jackie Cosper of 
Wedowee; and a brother, Jimmy Huey of Dallas, Texas.
   Pallbearers were Tim Huey, Chris Brown, Rob Kirby, Rance Kirby, Rhett Kirby, 
Clay Cosper and Phillip Hutson.

Sarah S. Martin

   (LANETT) Sarah S. Martin, 70, of Lanett died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at 
Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Services will be Friday, March 10, at 2 p.m. EST at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Wesley Dykes officiating. Graveside 
services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Forrester's Chapel United Methodist Church 
Cemetery near Wadley. 
   The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Johnson 
Brown-Service Funeral Home.
   Born April 23, 1935, in Wedowee to the late Maude Simpson Hollaway and Roy 
Hollaway, Mrs. Martin was a retired employee of Rose's department store in 
Lanett. She enjoyed working in the yard and gardening, and she assisted her 
husband with his cabinet business. She was of the Christian faith.
   Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband, James Edward Martin; a son, David 
Martin of Valley; four sisters, Lillie Pearl Richardson of Fontana, Calif., 
Rachel Perry of Wedowee, Mary Francis Wilson of Opelika and Mavis Hand of 
Montevallo; two brothers, Larry Hollaway of Wedowee and Walter Hollaway of 
Roanoke; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers Rosevelt 
Hollaway and Harvest Hollaway and sister Berneice Hollaway.

Hazel Ordell Birchfield

   (ENTERPRISE) Services for Hazel Ordell Birchfield of Enterprise, formerly of 
Wadley, 90, were Sunday, March 5, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Beulah Christian Church 
with the Rev. Phil Gore and the Rev. Matt Smith officiating. Burial followed at 
Concord Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Birchfield died, Thursday, March 2, at Medical Center of Enterprise.
   Survivors include one daughter, Helen Bugg of Wadley; one son, Jessee 
Birchfield of Enterprise; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were her grandsons.
   Mrs. Birchfield was born Aug. 21, 1915, daughter of William Jesse and Mattie 
Lou Smith Gunn. She was a member of Beulah Christian Church and had worked at 
Palm Beach Company. Mrs. Birchfield was preceded in death by her husband, James 
Birchfield; her parents; and one son, William James Birchfield.

Charles E. Shipp

   (LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.) Charles E. Shipp, 67, of Lawrenceville, Ga., died 
Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006.
   A native of Randolph County, he was the son of the late William and Jessie 
Horton Shipp. A 1963 graduate of Auburn University, he served in the U.S. Air 
Force during the Vietnam War, receiving the Air Force Medal. He retired in 1998 
as a pilot with Delta Airlines.
   Services were Friday, March 3, at Center Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Marion 
Prather officiated, and interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were 
Bill Borchert, T.T. Parrish, Fred Beardsley, E.P. Kendall, Bill Middleton and 
Buddy Sward.
   He is survived by his widow, Barbara Treadwell Shipp; two sons, Matt Shipp of 
Dacula, Ga., and Steve Shipp of Lawrenceville; one granddaughter; and nieces and 
nephews.

   (FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) Leonard Holliday, 73, of Fayetteville, N.C., died 
Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
   Mr. Holliday was born Dec. 19, 1932, in Chambers County, son of the late 
Hosea Holliday and the late Mary Holliday. He joined Rehope Baptist Church and 
graduated from Five Points High School, after which he joined the U.S. Army in 
1953.  He retired in 1973 after 20 years in the military and attended 
Fayetteville Technical Institute to become an auto mechanic, which became his 
profession.  He was a member of St. John AME Church of Fayetteville.
   He is survived by is wife, Catherine Holliday; two sons, Leonard Holliday Jr. 
of Smyrna, Ga., and Reginald Holliday of Stone Mountain, Ga.; one daughter, 
Felicia Taylor of Parkton, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 
seven great-grandchildren; nieces Virginia Whitlow and Annie Foster of Roanoke 
and Bernice Ware of Akron, Ohio; and a host of grandnieces, grandnephews, 
relatives and friends.
   Services were Saturday, March 4, at Wiseman Mortuary Chapel in Fayetteville, 
with the Rev. Vyonette Rhodes officiating. Burial was in Cumberland Memorial 
Gardens.

Emma H. Hardnett

   (DAVISTON) Emma H. Hardnett, 92, of Daviston died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, 
at Clay County Nursing Home, Ashland.
   Services were Tuesday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at Coger Hill C.M.E. Church, 
Daviston, with the Rev. Jacob G. Colbert Jr. officiating. Interment was in the 
church cemetery.
   Mrs. Hardnett was born Oct. 4, 1913, in Tallapoosa County. She was a member 
of Coger Hill C.M.E. Church. Mrs. Hardnett was preceded in death by her husband, 
Josh Hardnett.
   Surviving are five daughters, Moline Rowe of Daviston, Gladys Staples and 
Louise Thomas of Wadley, and Pauline Walker and Mable Nkanta of Queens, N.Y.; 
one son, Vernon Hardnett of Roanoke; 23 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren 
and 15 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and 
good neighbors and friends in the Daviston community.

Ben P. Dilworth

   (MONTGOMERY) Ben P. Dilworth, 91, of Montgomery died Saturday, March 4, 2006.
   Services were Tuesday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at Frazer Memorial United 
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roy Sublette officiating. Burial followed in 
Alabama Heritage Cemetery.
   Mr. Dilworth was born and reared in Amory, Miss. After graduating from 
Mississippi State University in 1937, he taught school in Enterprise and at 
Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery. He was employed by the State Department 
of Education in 1946 at their office at Auburn University. He transferred to the 
Office of Education in Montgomery in 1971, where he served as State 
Superintendent of Vocational Education. He retired from that position in 1979. 
He was married to Margaret Mullins of Dothan in December 1938.
   Mr. Dilworth was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his parents, B.A. 
and Lonnie Dilworth; his sister, Mary Lou Lann; and his brother, Eugene 
Dilworth. He is survived by his daughter, Diana Jones of Roanoke; a 
granddaughter; a grandson; and four great-grandchildren.

Robert T. 'Whitey' Yarbrough Jr.

   (LAKE CHARLES, La.) Robert T. Yarbrough Jr. died at his home in Lake Charles, 
La., on Friday, March 3, 2006.
   He was born Oct. 29, 1925, in Randolph County, the oldest son of Robert T. 
and Bertha Gross Yarbrough. He lived most of his adult and married life in Lake 
Charles. He was a graduate of Woodland High School, attended the University of 
Alabama and graduated from Jacksonville State University. He was preceded in 
death by his wife, Laura; a son, Danny; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert 
Yarbrough of Woodland. He was an active member of Victory Baptist Church of Lake 
Charles since 1967. He was affectionately known as "Whitey" to his family, 
friends and neighbors.
   On Monday, March 6, a memorial service was held in the chapel of Hixson 
Funeral. Burial was in Consolata Cemetery, Lake Charles.

Rubin Royston

   (ROANOKE) Rubin Royston, 65, better known as "Moochie," a resident of 
Roanoke, died on Friday, March 10, 2006, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Services were Tuesday, March 14, at 2 p.m. at Roanoke Funeral Home Chapel, 
with the Revs. Gilbert Staples, Jeffery Rosser and Robert Smith, and Bishop 
Lathonia Wright officiating. Interment followed in East Roanoke Cemetery.
   Mr. Royston was a member of the Riley Street First Baptist Church. On June 1, 
1995, he retired from the City of Roanoke.
   He is survived by a daughter, Penny McClendon of Roanoke; a sister, Alice Mae 
Smith of Roanoke; an aunt, Texanna Royston of Roanoke; an uncle, Walter B. Cosby 
of Marion, Ill.; and a special friend, Bain Woods of Roanoke.

Mildred Harris

   (WOODLAND) Mildred Harris, 86, formerly of Woodland, died Monday, March 13, 
2006, at Carrollton (Ga.) Nursing and Rehab.
   Mrs. Harris was born in Randolph County on March 26, 1920, to the late Arlin 
and Willie Bell Prescott Laney. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and 
homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
   Survivors include a son, S.W. Harris of Ranburne; a daughter, Elsie Mathis of 
Ranburne; three brothers, Bill Laney of Ranburne, Clifford Laney of LaGrange, 
Ga., and Curtis Laney of Woodland; a sister, Nell Young of Ranburne; three 
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Services for Mrs. Harris will be Wednesday, March 15, at 1 p.m. CST at 
Herren's Grove Baptist Church in Randolph County. The Rev. Ray Runyan and the 
Rev. Joel McLeroy will officiate. Music will be provided by the church choir. 
Pallbearers will be Cris Ledbetter. Ray Laney, Adam Downs, Darrel McManus, 
Trevor Kribbs and Kenneth Spradlin.    Interment will follow in the church

   Mrs. Hall died Thursday, March 9, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Born in Dozier on Sept. 25, 1916, Mrs. Hall was the first recipient of a 
basketball scholarship to Southern Union in 1934. She was preceded in death by 
her husband, Wesley Hall. Mrs. Hall operated the Farmers Feed & Supply in Wadley 
for many years. She was a member of Beulah-Christian Church.
   Mrs. Hall is survived by a daughter, Bobbi Herring of Opelika; two sons, 
Jimmy Hall and John Hall of Wadley; four grandchildren; seven great-
grandchildren.

26 years and a member of the Auburn Alumni Association. Mrs. Rice was preceded 
in death by her mother, Ethel Cosby Davis; her grandmother, Ruth Williams; and a 
special sister, Holly Johnson.

   (FITZGERALD, Ga.) Rudene S. Moncus, 80, of Fitzgerald, Ga., formerly of 
LaGrange, Ga., died Monday, March 6, 2006, at the Life Care Center in 
Fitzgerald.
   Mrs. Moncus, born July 10, 1925, in Roanoke, the daughter of the late Lester 
and Gussie B. Smith. Mrs. Moncus had lived in Fitzgerald since 1970. She was a 
member of Stonewall Church of God and attended Westside Baptist Church in 
Fitzgerald. She was a former employee of Callaway Mills Company.
   Survivors include a son, Tony Moncus of Fitzgerald; a daughter, Wanda Patrick 
of Hampton, Ga.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Vent Moncus.

   Mr. Clark died Monday, March 13, at Clay County Hospital.

He had worked in carpentry and construction most of his life.
   He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Clark of Wadley; one daughter, Patricia 
Tipton of Hoover; one son, Jimmy Clark of Wadley; two sisters, Thelma Clark of 
LaFayette, and Yvonne Rogers of Piedmont; two brothers, Nick Clark of Marrero, 
La., and Don Clark of Valley; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death 
by a son, Ricky Clark.

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Louise Margaret Head, 90, of Rock Mills were

   Miss Head died Thursday, March 16, at Traylor Nursing Home.

Caroline 'Essie' Braden Meeker

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Caroline "Essie" Braden Meeker, 94, of Wedowee were 
Friday, March 17, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel in 
Lineville, with the Rev. Braden Morrison officiating. Burial followed in Corinth 
Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Meeker died Wednesday, March 15, in Woodland.
   She was a native of Randolph County where she lived most of her life, was a 
homemaker and had been a health nurse in Cleburne County for over 25 years. She 
was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
   She is survived by a daughter, Noma Carol Meeker of Golden Springs; and a 
granddaughter, Kara Noma Nelson of Huntsville. She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Lloyd R. Meeker; three sisters, Noma Braden, Lorene Traylor and Hattie 
Morrison; and five brothers, Early Braden, Gilbert L. Braden, Humprey Braden, 
Gay Braden and H.O. Braden.

Grace Leola Dyer Gourdouze

  (TUSCALOOSA) Grace Leola Dyer Gourdouze, 85, of Tuscaloosa died Wednesday, 
March 15, 2006, in Tuscaloosa.
   Mrs. Gourdouze was born on Aug. 7, 1920, in Worthington, Ind., to the late 
Alpha Earl Dyer and Clara Ingba Wall Dyer. She graduated from Worthington High 
School in 1939 and attended Indianapolis City Hospital School of Nursing, where 
she received her R.N. diploma in 1943. Grace Dyer married Frank Rex Gourdouze of 
Bicknell, Ind., on Nov. 20, 1948, in Manchester, Ind. Together they had three 
children. Mrs. Gourdouze worked as the school nurse for Southern Union State 
Junior College from 1969 until her retirement in 1984. Her husband, Frank 
Gourdouze, served as the basketball and baseball coach at Southern Union from 
1969 until his retirement in 1986. Preceding her in death was an infant son; 
daughter-in-law; brothers, Wilbur, Earl Jr., Robert, Marvin, James Russell and 
Harry Dyer; and sister, Allegra Crooke.
   Surviving are her husband, Frank Gourdouze; daughters, Richelle and Robbyn 
Gourdouze of Tuscaloosa; a son, Randall Gourdouze of Auburn; two granddaughters; 
and three great-grandsons.
   Graveside services will be held in Worthington at a later date.

Katy Whaley

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Katy Whaley, 65, of Wedowee were Thursday, March 16, 
2006, at 4 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Smith 
officiating. Burial followed in Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Whaley died Wednesday, March 15, at East Alabama Medical Center, 
Opelika.
   Mrs. Whaley is survived by three sons, Buster, Ricky and Rex Whaley of 
Wedowee; five sisters, Lucille Whaley and Bertha Dutton of Wedowee, Minnie B. 
Strickland of Georgia, and Virginia Hester and Etta Davis of Valley; one 
brother, Leon Whaley of Valley; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Mrs. Whaley was born June 14, 1940, daughter of Bill and Demae Mitchell 
Whaley. She was of the Christian faith and had been a fixer for Amoco Fabrics & 
Fibers. Mrs. Whaley is preceded in death by her parents.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Harold B. Key, 79, of Wedowee were Thursday, March 16, 
2006, at noon at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. James Abernathy and the 
Rev. Basil Key officiating. Burial followed in Forestlawn Gardens.
   Mr. Key died Tuesday, March 14, at Clay County Hospital.
   Mr. Key is survived by his wife, Jeanne Hill of Wedowee; one daughter-in-law, 
Kay Key of Oxford; four sisters, Mora Humphries of Lineville, Ethel Bean and 
Betty Hendrix of Huntsville and Naomi Hill of Wedowee; and one brother, Basil 
Key of Wedowee.
   Pallbearers were be Loyd Craft, Billy Brewer, Sid Nelson, Jeffery Smith, 
Larry Wilson and William Humphries.
   Mr. Key was born Dec. 23, 1926, son of William and Weda East Key. He was of 
the Congregational Methodist faith and owned Key's Plating. Mr. Key was preceded

   (ROANOKE) Georgia Mae Trammell, 70, of Roanoke died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, 
at Randolph Medical Center.

Points, with the Rev. L.B. Houston officiating. Interment was in Skyview 
Memorial Gardens.
   Mrs. Trammell is survived by a son, Eddie Trammell of Decatur, Ga.; a 
daughter, Shelia Trammell of Roanoke; a brother, Jimmy Barnes of Roanoke; a 
sister, Alice Mae Roberson of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and four 
great-grandchildren.

Alma Estelle Moore

   (CONYERS, Ga.) Alma Estelle Moore, 68, of Conyers, Ga., died Sunday, March 
19, 2006.
   Mrs. Moore was a member of Goshen Baptist Church in Dawsonville, Ga., and 
loved spending time with her family and doing arts and crafts. She also took 
pride in doing all the yard work at her house.
   She is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Minda Reed. She is 
survived by her husband, C.Q. Moore; a daughter, Debbie Foster of Conyers; a 
son, Danny Moore of Stockbridge, Ga.; five grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon 
Reed of Ellijay, Ga., and Clifford Reed of Covington, Ga., and numerous nieces 
and nephews.
   Services will be Wednesday, March 22, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in 
Lithonia, Ga.  Dr. Jim Martin will officiate.  Interment will follow at Green 
Meadow Memorial Gardens.

Bernice Irene Fetner

   (ROANOKE) Services for Bernice Irene Fetner, 95, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
March 25, 2006, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Johnny 
Williams and the Rev. Milton Newton officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
   Mrs. Fetner died Thursday, March 23, at Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke.
   Survivors inlude [include] one son, Billy Joe Fetner of Roanoke; one 
granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Willie Jo Newton of 
Valley.
   Pallbearers were Larry Newton, Danny Ray Brown, Cleve Moore, Tim Sanders, Joe 
Tittle and Mike Templeton.
   Mrs. Fetner was born Sept. 1, 1910, daughter of James Melton and Reva Jane 
Young Nix. She was a member of Mt. Zion Christian Church and had been a 
housewife. Mrs. Fetner was preceded in death by her husband, Presley Plemer 
"Pete" Fetner.

Joan Denise Stewart

   Joan Denise Stewart, 50, died Sunday, March 26, 2006, after a battle with 
cancer.
   Born Joan Denise Boyd on Sept. 20, 1955, to Junior Ray and Emmalene Boyd, she 
was a lifelong resident of Randolph County. Joan graduated from Randolph County 
High School in 1973 and Gadsden State Community College in 1995 with a degree in 
nursing. She had worked as an RN at Lineville Nursing Home, Traylor Nursing Home 
and Cleburne County Nursing Home. For the past several years she worked at 
Roanoke Healthcare as director of nursing. She was a minister, a Sunday school 
teacher and church treasurer. She was a member of New Life Center Church of God 
in Wedowee.
   Mrs. Stewart is survived by her husband, Danny V. Stewart; two sons, 
Christopher Daniel Stewart and Brandon Keith Stewart; two grandchildren; her 
mother, Emmalene Jenkins and stepfather Robert Jenkins; her mother-in-law, Daisy 
Stewart; father-in-law, Winston Stewart; two sisters, Angie Caldwell and Jan 
Dettling; three nieces; two nephews; two great-nieces; and one great-nephew. She 
was preceded in death by her father, Junior Ray Boyd; and one brother, Terry Ray 
Boyd.
   Services will be Wednesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at New Life Center Church of 
God, Wedowee, with pastors Jerry and Judy Smith officiating, assisted by Phillip 
Waits, pastor of Cavers Grove Christian Church.

Drew Bob Cunningham

   (WADLEY) Services for Drew Bob Cunningham, 79, of Wadley were Tuesday, March 
28, 2006, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Don Quick officiating. 
Burial followed at White's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Cunningham died Saturday, March 25, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Rosa Lee Cunningham of Wadley; one daughter, 
Brenda Helms of Wadley; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Cunningham was born July 2, 1926, son of D.C. 
and Minnie Kirby Cunningham. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of 
White's Chapel Methodist Church and had been employed as an auto mechanic by 
Fincher Auto. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Larry 
Cunningham and Herman Lee Cunningham.
   Serving as pallbearers were Steve Nunn, Bobby Crabtree, Mark Morris, Dewayne 
Satterwhite, Danny Moncus, Hugh Benefield and Greg Benefield.

Beth Stephens

   (LAFAYETTE) Beth Stephens, 88, of LaFayette died Friday, March 24, 2006, at 
LaFayette Nursing Home.
   Services were at New Hope Christian Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 
with interment in Milltown Cemetery. The Rev. Dee Dowdy and the Rev. Bridget 
Dowdy officiated.
   Mrs. Stephens was born in the Abanda community of Chambers County on Jan. 22, 
1918. She was a member of New Hope Christian Church and a homemaker.
   Surviving are two sons, Wayne Stephens of LaFayette and Don Stephens of 
Jackson, Tenn.; two sisters, Virginia Sims of Foley and Fay Walters of 
LaFayette; three grandsons; three great-granddaughters; and a host of nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers were Dwight Walters, Sidney Walters, Alan Sims, Doug Ozley, John 
Milner and Lee Hayes.

Herbert F. Windsor

   (VALLEY) Herbert F. Windsor, 73, of Valley died Saturday, March 25, 2006, at 
Beverly Health Care in Lanett.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, March 28, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Bill Williams officiating. Burial 
followed at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.
   Mr. Windsor is survived by four daughters, Susan Traylor of Woodland, Judy 
Norred and Deborah Taylor of Valley and Becky Barber of Georgia; two sons, 
Jeffery Chase of Lanett and Samuel Windsor of Valley; 17 grandchildren and 
numerous great-grandchildren.
   Born Feb. 7, 1933, in Alabama, Mr. Windsor was the son of the late Elbert and 
Pearlie Windsor. He was a retired carpenter. Mr. Windsor had lived in the Valley 
area most of his life and loved being on the river.  He had been in declining 
health for the past several years. Mr. Windsor was preceded in death by his 
wife, Dorothy Windsor; his daughter, Angela Carroll; and his son, Mike Chase.

his memory.

McWhorter of Lake Placid, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and

   Mrs. Washington was born July 11, 1915, daughter of Henry G. and Allie Hester 
Croker. She was a member of First Church of God and a homemaker. Mrs. Washington 
was preceded in death by husbands Denson O'Dell Robinson and Harvis Washington; 
one son, Denson Robinson Jr.; one grandson, Carey Orr; two brothers, Bruce and 
James Croker; and four sisters, Bovine Cavender, Mary Robinson, Peggy Laster and 
Ezoble Arrington.

   (WEDOWEE) Eula Mae Billingsley, 80, of Wedowee died Monday, March 27, 2006, 
at Bethany House, Auburn.
   Services will be Saturday, April 1, at 1 p.m. at Union Chapel United 
Methodist Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. William W. Crawford officiating. Burial 
will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include two sons, Charlie West of Tuskegee and Roy Billingsley of 
Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Mildred Anderson of Colorado Springs; three 
sisters, Wildred West and Alzadia West of Wedowee and Della Phillips of Atlanta; 
16 grand-children and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Willie B. Billingsley; and a son, Willie B. Billingsley Jr.

   Mrs. Yearts [Yearta]was born April 9, 1918, in Randolph County. She had lived 
in LaGrange most of her life, was retired from Milliken and Company and was a 
member of Oakside Baptist Church.
   Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Thompson of Opelika, Betty Shiver 
of Callahan, Fla., Louise Tallman of Fairburn, Ga., and Gwen Brock of Boonville, 
Calif; four sons, Bob Knott of Tampa, Fla, James Jarrell of Laurens, S.C., 
Joseph Jarrell of Hampton, Ga., and Tim Jarrell of LaGrange; 19 grandchildren, 
19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and

   (PHENIX CITY) Services for William George Satterwhite, 90, of Phenix City,

High Pine Baptist Church Cemetery.

   Mr. Satterwhite died Monday, March 27, at Canterbury Nursing Home in Phenix 
City.
   Survivors include two daughters, Dianne Locklar of Phenix City and Wilma 
Hasha of California; a son, David Satterwhite of Topeka, Kansas; three sisters, 
Edna Sims and Carrie Ann Windsor of Roanoke and Beatrice Alsabrooke of Fredonia; 
a brother, Benny Satterwhite of Roanoke; and 11-grandchildren.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Satterwhite ws[was] born June 25, 1915, son of 
Lester and Lula Carpenter Satterwhite. He was Baptist by faith, worked in 
commercial construction and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ella Turnham 
Satterwhite.

   (VALLEY) Flossie Kent Stone, 86, of Valley died Monday, March 27, 2006, at 
her residence.

will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Stone is survived by two brothers, Andrew Jack Kent of Pinellas Park, 
Fla., and Paul Kent of New Braunfels, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Born Aug. 23, 1919, in Randolph County, Mrs. Stone was the daughter of the 
late Della Mae Sanders Kent and John Kent. She was a very active member of West 
Side Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school classes for more than 28 
years.

   Survivors include his wife, Thelma Cordia Mae Billingsley; four sons, Willie 
Lewis Billingsley, Antoine Billingsley, Jevon Billingsley and Kevin Billingsley; 
two daughters, Thelma Denise and Genia Davis; and a brother, Travis Billingsley, 
all from Atlanta; two sisters, Merlie Foster of Atlanta and Vernell Billingsley
