OBITUARIES:

Junior Wiggins

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for Junior Wiggins, 67, of Newell were at 2 p.m. Thursday, 
Dec. 30, 1999, at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Chris Mitchell officiating.  
Burial was in Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Wiggins died Tuesday, Dec. 28, at Colonial Pines Nursing Home in Oxford.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Feb. 15, 1932, son of Alpha 
Houston and Vera Albright Wiggins.  He was an engineer with the State Highway 
Department and a member of Union Baptist Church.
   Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Olds of Newell; a son, Randy Wiggins of 
Jacksonville; and three grandchildren.
   Memorial donations may be made to the Gideons.
   Pallbearers were Phillip Waites, Jeff Owen, Stanley Taylor, Elton Key, Max Handley 
and Frankie Waters.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

J. W. 'Dub' Owens

   (ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for J. W. 'Dub' Owens, 85, of Rock Mills, formerly of 
Glenn, Ga., were Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Rock Mills United Methodist 
Church, with the Rev. James Harper officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
   Mr. Owens died Saturday, Jan. 1, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Owens was born May 1, 1914, son of Robert Lee and 
Bela Atkinson Owens.  He was a member of Rock Mills United Methodist Church and had 
been employed with Wehadkee Yarn Mills.
   Survivors include his wife, Lucille Yarbrough Owens of Rock Mills; a son, John Wesley 
Owens of Montgomery; a granddaughter; a grandson; and one sister, Gladys Brown of 
Rock Mills.
   Pallbearers were Robert Adamson, Bill King, Bill Brown, Skip Kelley, Larry Houze and 
Harold Hill.  Members of Rock Mills Methodist Fellowship Sunday School Class served as 
honorary pallbearers.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Vivian Watts

   (VALLEY) Vivian Watts, 87, of Valley died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at LaFayette 
Extended Care Facility, LaFayette.
   Mrs. Watts was born in Tallapoosa County on Nov. 13, 1912, daughter of the late Leola 
Woods Brooks.  She had retired from an Auburn nursing home, where she worked as a 
nurse's aide.  She was a member of Opelika Church of the Nazarene.
   Mrs. Watts is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth "Maggie" Martin of Opelika; a son, 
Andrew Watts of Valley; two sisters, Minnie Bell Cole of Valley and Mildred Allen of 
Roanoke; a brother, Rufus Brooks of the Grey Hill community in Ga.; eight grandchildren; 
six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Emmitt Watts; a son, Roy B. Watts; and a daughter, Kathryn Watts.
   Graveside services were at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Shawmut Cemetery, with the 
Rev. Roy Bain officiating.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Edward Payson Greene

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Edward Payson Greene, 83, of Wedowee were at 
11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Corinth United Methodist Church, with the Revs. 
Tommy Burke, Oscar Cotton and Bill Luke officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining church 
cemetery.
   Mr. Greene died Monday, Dec. 27, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Dec. 20, 1916, son of William S. 
and Evelyn Rogers Greene.  He had been employed with Tyson Foods, was a World War 
II veteran, a Gideon, a member of the Hardy Howle Lodge F&AM, and a member of 
Corinth United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Annie Gaston Greene of Wedowee; a daughter, Emmie Kines 
of Sylacauga; and two grandchildren.
   Memorial donations may be made to the Gideons or to Corinth United Methodist 
Church.
   Pallbearers were Johnny Hyatt, Gwin Norred, Wayne Huddleston, Glenn Traylor, Chad 
Lee and Truman Morrison.  Honorary pallbearers were Earl Huddleston, Brenford Boyd 
and members of the Men's Sunday School Class at Corinth United Methodist Church.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

James William Yarbrough

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for James William Yarbrough, 78, of Newell will be at 
2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Smyrna Baptist Church with the Revs. Brian Smith, 
Cal Ledbetter and Bobby Garner officiating.  Burial will be in the adjoining church 
cemetery.
   Mr. Yarbrough died Monday, Jan. 3, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston.
   He was born in Cleburne County on April 3, 1921, son of James Ol Yarbrough and 
Nancy Lusindie Huckabea Yarbrough.  He had been employed at the Anniston Army 
Depot, was a World War II veteran, a member of the VFW, the Disabled American 
Veterans, the Randolph County Coonhunters Club and was a Baptist.
   Survivors include his wife, Rachel McLeod Yarbrough of Newell; three daughters, Mary 
Anne Smith and Faye Aldredge of Newell and Sue Beam of Ranburne; a son, Wendell 
Yarbrough of Newell; four sisters, Vendie Nolan of Newell, Vinnie Price of Carrollton, 
Ga., Rosie Deese of Ranburne and Ina Cohen of Bowdon, Ga.; two brothers, J. O. 
Yarbrough of Ranburne and Burl Yarbrough of Carrollton, Ga.; eleven grandchildren and 
four great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Yarbrough will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. 
Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be grandsons.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Irma Gene Earnest

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Irma Gene Earnest, 68, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Rock Mills United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David 
Holmes, Scott McKay and James Harper officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
   Mrs. Earnest died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2000, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange 
following an extended illness.
   She was born in Randolph County on April 16, 1931, daughter of Marvin and Fannie 
Fowler Burgess.  She had been employed at Wehadkee Mills, was a former member of 
Sam and Sammys and was a member of Rock Mills United Methodist Church, where she 
was a member of the Guild.
   Survivors include two sons, Johnny Earnest of Wadley and Stanley Earnest of Rock 
Mills; a sister Ruby Cosper of Rock Mills; a brother, M. L. Burgess of Rock Mills; and 
two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Junior Rollins, Carey Holloway, Robert Adamson, Bill King, Skip 
Kelly and Kenny Kirby.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Barbara Florence Melton

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Barbara Florence Melton, 89, of Wadley will be at 2 
p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Corinth Christian Church, with the Revs. Gordon Taylor 
and Ricky Cummings officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Melton died Monday, Jan. 3, at Clay County Nursing Home in Ashland.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Feb. 28, 1910, daughter of Ocie 
and Martha Gibson Wright.  She had been employed at Handley Mills and was a member 
of Corinth Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubbard Melton.
   Survivors include two sons, Carl Melton of Wadley and James Reuben Melton of 
Buford, Ga.; one brother, Ed Wright of Birmingham; nine grandchildren and nine great- 
grandchildren.
   Mrs. Melton will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be grandchildren.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Ike Robinson

   (ROANOKE) Ike Robinson, 63, of Roanoke died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Randolph 
County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Bethel United Methodist 
Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. Tommie L. Finley officiating.  Burial will be in East 
Roanoke Cemetery.
   Mr. Robinson was born in Chambers County.  He was a lifelong member of Bethel 
United Methodist Church in Roanoke and a longtime employee of M. M. Handley Lumber 
Company.
   Survivors include his mother, Pearl Robinson of Roanoke; a sister, Marie Heard of 
Roanoke; a god-daughter, Sharon Cameron of Roanoke; three god-grandchildren; and 
several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Robinson, 
and four sisters, Luella McNeal, Beatrice Hill, Cora Robinson and Bessie Robinson.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before services.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Terrel Hudson Pound

   (AUBURN) Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Terrel Hudson Pound, 86, of Auburn, 
formerly of Roanoke, were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Randolph Memory 
Gardens, Roanoke, with the Rev. James Harper officiating.
   Mrs. Pound died Sunday, Jan. 2, at her residence.
   She was born in Chambers County on Oct. 23, 1913, daughter of John Thomas and 
Kate Holliday Hudson.  She retired from Palm Beach Company and was a member of 
Rock Mills United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Holder of Auburn; a son, Denny Pound of 
Roanoke; two sisters, Ferrel Cofield of Donalsonville, Ga., and Myrtice Bartlett of 
Roanoke; three brothers, Handley Hudson and Waymon Hudson of Five Points and 
John Hudson of Roanoke; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two 
great-great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Troy B. White

   (ANNISTON) Troy B. White, 83, of Anniston, formerly of Randolph County, died 
Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at his residence.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral 
Home, Oxford, with the Rev. Buford Gaines officiating.  Burial was in Union Baptist 
Church Cemetery.
   Survivors include two daughters, Shelby Gaines of Anniston and Annette Robertson of 
Oxford; one son, Mike White of Oxford; one sister, Emma Lee Clark of Wadley; 
two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Mr. White had been a resident of Anniston for the past three years, coming from 
Randolph County.  He was a member of Union Baptist Church.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lakeside Hospice, Inc., P.O. Box 544, 
Pell City, AL 35125.
   Arrangements were by Miller Funeral Home, Oxford.

John H. Brazil

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Funeral services for John H. Brazil Jr., 78, of LaGrange, Ga., were 
at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry 
Cosper officiating.  Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Brazil died Wednesday, Dec. 29, at his residence.
   A lifelong resident of Troup County, Ga., he was born Nov. 12, 1921, son of John H. 
Brazil Sr. and Lottie Parham Brazil.  He was retired from General Signals Company, a 
retired Navy veteran of World War II and was a Methodist.  He was preceded in death 
by his wife, Ruth Cummings Brazil.
   Survivors include two stepdaughters, Wanda Jean Cummings of Knoxville, Tenn., and 
Sara Paulette Negrett of Garden Cove, Calif., a brother, Charles Brazil of Dothan; four 
step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

OBITUARIES:

Gary Reid McDaniel

   (HOMEWOOD) Funeral services for Gary Reid McDaniel, 5, of Homewood were at 
2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Roanoke First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. 
Tex Ergle, David Daniel and Chris Sikes officiating.  Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Pallbearers were Bill Messer, Dr. Patrick Farr, Tom Spencer, Tim Langley, Robert 
Hawthorne and Grant Cagle.
   Gary Reid McDaniel was born Feb. 7, 1994, and died on Jan. 4 at Children's Hospital in 
Birmingham after suffering a long battle with neuroblastoma.  Reid was a beautiful child 
with a gentle spirit.  Although he spent many of his days at Children's Hospital, he made 
the most of his short time on earth and left a legacy of love, courage and joy.
   He is survived by his parents, Ranier Montgomery McDaniel and Gary Randall 
McDaniel of Homewood; his grandparents, Anne Rainer Montgomery and W. E. 
Montgomery Jr. of Roanoke and Mrs.(sic) and Mrs. Gary McDaniel of Woodland; 
great-grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Manley McDaniel of Roanoke; and aunts, uncles and 
cousins.
   The family requests memorial donations be made to Children's Hospital to the Reid 
McDaniel Memorial Fund, 1600 7th Ave. S., Birmingham, AL 35225.

Roy Lee Tate

   (ROANOKE) Roy Lee Tate, 46, of Roanoke died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, in 
Montgomery.
   Graveside services were Monday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m. at Skyview Memorial Gardens 
Cemetery, Welch, with the Rev. John C. Greathouse officiating.
   Survivors include his mother, Irene Shears of Roanoke; three step-sisters, Brenda 
Johnson and Diane Tigner of Roanoke and Ruby Nell Glenn of Franklin, Ga.; and several 
aunts and uncles.
   He was preceded in death by his father, Eddie Lee Tate.
   Arrangement were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Horace E. Spradlin

   (HEFLIN) Funeral services for Horace E. Spradlin, 76, of Heflin will be at 2 p.m. 
Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Mt. Carmel Church of Christ, Woodland, with Mark 
Carpenter and Dwight Thomas officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Grove Church of 
Christ Cemetery.
   Mr. Spradlin died Monday, Jan. 10, at his residence following an extended illness.
   He was born in Randolph County on Aug. 30, 1923, son of William and Lola Prince 
Spradlin.  He was an Army veteran of World War II and Korea, a state game warden for 
24 years, and a member of the Alabama Peace Officers Association and Mt. Carmel 
Church of Christ.  He was preceded in death by twin sons, Larry and Barry Spradlin, and 
by two brothers, Winston Spradlin and Ira Spradlin.
   Survivors include his wife, Ruth Stewart Spradlin of Heflin; two daughters, Terri Short 
of Heflin and Carol Arons of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sons, George Spradlin and David 
Spradlin of Woodland; three sisters, Ruth Crenshaw of Woodland, Ann Turner of 
Mableton, Ga., and Jean Richardson of Merritt Island, Fla.; six brothers, Marvin Spradlin, 
Basil Spradlin, Bill Spradlin and Donald Spradlin of Woodland, Wayne Spradlin of 
Lineville and Prince Spradlin of Luray, Tenn.; three grandchildren and two 
great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Spradlin will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
   Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of East Alabama, P.O. Box 2581, 
Anniston, AL 36202.
   Pallbearers will be Ken Spradlin, Mike Spradlin, Mark Spradlin, Gary Spradlin, Brandon

   (WEDOWEE) Graveside services for John Henry Hill Jr., 83, of Wedowee were 
Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Skyview Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Anthony 
Hixon officiating.
   Mr. Hill died Saturday, Jan. 1.
   Survivors include one son, James Barney of Englishtown, N.J.; one brother, J. C. Hill of 
Buffalo, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, W. T. Pinkard of Wedowee; a host of nieces and nephews 
and special neighbors Henry and Melinda Nelson of Wedowee.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Irene Cole Stephens

   (OPELIKA) Graveside funeral services for Irene Cole Stephens, 86, of Opelika were at 
11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke.
   Mrs. Stephens died Friday, Jan. 7, at Care Center of Opelika.
   She was born in Clay County on April 25, 1913, daughter of Ernest and Bernice Cole.  
She was a homemaker and a member of Auburn United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include one son, William Stephens of Auburn; one sister, Louise Cole of 
Lineville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

OBITUARIES:

Mary Willard Milford Lehner

   (RICHMOND, Va.) Funeral services for Mary Willard Milford Lehner, 88, of 
Richmond, Va., were Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at 1:30 p.m. at Jeff Jones Funeral Home, 
LaFayette, with burial at LaFayette City Cemetery.  The Rev. Jimmy Allen officiated.
   Mrs. Lehner died Sunday, Jan. 9, in Richmond after a brief illness.  She was born 
Oct. 28, 1911, in Chambers County, Ala., daughter of Leon Alvin Milford and Mary 
Argent Arnett Milford, both of whom preceded her in death.
   Mrs. Lehner was an active member of Bon Air Baptist Church in Richmond and in the 
Richmond Quilting Guild for many years.
   She is survived by two daughters, Mary Eleaner Lehner Malloch of Richmond and Myra 
Jean Lehner Burke of Ocala, Fla.; one sister, Eleanor Milford Meade of Trussville; two 
brothers, Myron Milford of Five Points and Tom Milford of Mobile; one granddaughter; 
two nephews and one niece.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Raymond Venley Scales

   (ELLENWOOD, Ga.) Raymond Venley Scales, 58, of Ellenwood, Ga., died Tuesday, 
Jan. 11, 2000, at Henry County Medical Center, Stockbridge, Ga.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 15, at noon at Stephens Mission United Methodist 
Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. Jimmy Horton officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Survivors include his father, Lesley Scales of Wedowee; two brothers, the Rev. John 
Scales of Orlando, Fla., and Joseph Scales of Atlanta; and six sisters, Adella Hayden of 
Orlando, Nora Lovell of Anniston, Ethel Houston and Gloria Lawson of Wedowee, and 
Dr. Ella Robinson and Cheryl Green of Montgomery.  Mr. Scales was preceded in the 
death of his mother, Mary Ella Scales, and younger sister, Loventrice A. Scales Kannar.
   Mr. Scales joined Stephens Mission United Methodist Church at an early age and 
remained a member until death.  Noted for his exceptional academic ability, he graduated 
from Randolph County Training School at the age of 15.  After serving in the U.S. Navy 
for one year, he attended Alabama State University in Montgomery before entering the 
U.S. Air Force.  After completing his military tour, Mr. Scales worked for the U.S. Postal 
Service for several years until health compelled him to retire.
   Arrangements were by Raleigh Rucker Funeral Home, Atlanta, and Clark Memorial 
Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Nancy Swann Griffin

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Nancy Swann Griffin, 90, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Roanoke First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tex Ergle 
and Brother Sam Carpenter officiating.  Burial was at Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Griffin died Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Randolph County Hospital following an 
extended illness.
   She was born in Wedowee on April 11, 1909, daughter of Dr. Joseph Charles Swann 
and Cassie Dobson Swann.  She attended the University of Alabama, joined Bank of 
Wedowee as bookkeeper in 1956 and retired as vice president in 1989, while remaining a 
member of the Board of Directors until retiring in 1999.  She was a member of Roanoke 
Garden Club, Bridge Club and Roanoke First United Methodist Church.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Houston Lamar Griffin.
   Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Hale of Roanoke; three grandchildren and two 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tommy Holmes, Glenn Carpenter, Kerry White, Scott Carter, Chad 
Perry and Bob Folsom.  Honorary pallbearers were members of the Board of Directors of 
Bank of Wedowee.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James Lee Wade

   (PENTON) James Lee Wade, 58, of Penton died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at his 
residence.
   A North Carolina native, Mr. Wade was born Oct. 22, 1941.  He was employed as a 
dispatcher for Kelly Trucking in Wadley.  Prior to that he was a dispatcher for Kelly 
Trucking in LaFayette for 10 years.  He was a member of Penton Church of God.
   Funeral services were at Penton Church of God on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 3:30 p.m.  
Interment was in Dan View Cemetery in Eden, N.C.  The Rev. Mickey Kennedy 
officiated.
   He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Wade of Penton; four children, Lisa Wade and Kirk 
Wade of Eden, N.C., Lori Carter of Reidsville, N.C., and Jim Wade Jr. of Stoneville, 
N. C.; two step-children, Kathy Thrower of Lanett and Michelle Blankenship of Daviston; 
one sister, Joretta Gilbert of Eden; nine grandchildren and two nieces.
   Memorial donations may be made to the East Alabama Hospice program or to the 
Cancer Clinic of East Alabama Medical Center.

Beverly Sallee Coker

   (WADLEY) Graveside funeral services for Beverly Sallee Coker, 74, of Wadley, were 
at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Hayneville City Cemetery in Hayneville, with the Rev. 
Fred Fuller officiating.
   Mrs. Coker died Thursday, Jan. 13, at her residence following an extended illness.
   A resident of Randolph County for 30 years, she was born in Illinois on Jan. 27, 1925, 
daughter of Logan Sallee and Ruth Alice Copper Sallee.  She was a homemaker and a 
member of Wadley United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
William Lee Coker.
   Survivors include four daughters, Suellyn Coker of LaFayette, Anne C. Hamp of

Mary H. Bailey

   (JONESBORO, Ga.) Mary H. Bailey of Jonesboro, Ga., died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000.
   Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Union Hill Baptist Church, 
Roanoke.  The Rev. James Harper and the Rev. David McCoy officiated.  Interment was 
in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Bailey is survived by two daughters, Brenda Hand of Acworth, Ga., and Teresa 
Freeman of Conyers, Ga.; two sons, Edward Bailey of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Donnie 
Bailey of Jonesboro; two sisters, Florence Hand of Acworth and Joyce Vaughn of 
Roanoke; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Steven Lewis Baldwin

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Steven Lewis Baldwin, 47, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Highway First Congregational Methodist Church, 
with the Rev. Wayne Jetton officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Baldwin died Sunday, Jan. 16, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston.
   Mr. Baldwin was a native of Chambers County, born Jan. 26, 1952, son of Lewis Victor 
Baldwin and Arrie Myrtis Scott Baldwin.  He was employed with the Coca-Cola Bottling 
Company for many years.  He was a member and deacon of Highway First Congregational 
Methodist Church.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Tim Baldwin, and a son, 
Steven Joseph Baldwin.
   Mr. Baldwin is survived by his wife, Sandra Baldwin of Roanoke; two daughters, 
Stephanie and Sue Ada Baldwin of Roanoke; and his parents.
   Pallbearers will be Jamie Cofield, Mark Scott, Andy Harrington, Eddie Harrington, 
Pierce Meadows, Damen Earl, Ryan Conger and Gary Spears.
   Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Highway First Congregational Methodist 
Church.
   Mr. Baldwin will lie in state at his home, 2840 County Rd. 620, Roanoke, until service 
time.

Curtis Manley Brown

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Curtis Manley Brown, 72, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Center Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jody Overton and 
the Rev. Roy Parmer officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born May 11, 1927, son of Fred Marion 
Brown and Emily Eunice Ward Brown.  He had worked at Handley Mills and was retired 
for Amoco Fabrics and Fibers.  He was a member of Center Chapel Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Blanch Brown of Roanoke; two sons, Donnie Brown of 
Wadley and Chad Brown of Roanoke; four sisters, Faye Bennett, Minnie Fincher and 
Cordie Dobson of Roanoke and Bertha Mae Barber of LaFayette; three grandchildren and 
two great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Parker Barber, Charlie Brown, Jackie Brown, Rodney Brown, Michael 
Whaley, Benny Ray Mason, Mark Mason and Steve McDaniel.

Phillip Randall Key

   (LANETT) Funeral services for Phillip Randall Key, 43, of Lanett were Saturday, Jan. 
15, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Center West Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brent 
Thompson officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Key died Thursday, Jan. 13, at his residence.  He was a native of Lee County and 
a former resident of Florida.  He was employed with the food service industry as a caterer 
and was a Baptist by faith.
   He is survived by his father and mother, Joel and Catherine James Key of Delta; three 
sisters, Judy Hillyer of Chattanooga, Tenn., Sheila Goza of Harrison, Tenn., and Kathy 
Moncus of Lanett; and two brothers, Kenneth Key of Opelika and Joel Key Jr. of Lanett.

Fred Roundtree

   (ROANOKE) Fred Roundtree, 74, of Roanoke died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at George 
H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 17, at Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. S. L. Roundtree of Roanoke; six daughters, Mary 
Gouch of Atlanta, Elizabeth Pittman, Janie Gates, Linda Holloway and Brenda Dukes of 
Roanoke and Doris Alford of Gadsden; two sisters Nora Fears of Chattanooga, Tenn., and 
Evelyn Jones of Roanoke; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Roundtree joined Peach [sic] and Goodwill Baptist Church at an early age and 
remained a member until death.  He was a loyal employee of mare than 30 years at the 
former Handley Textile Mills, Roanoke.

Herman E. Fulghum

   (ROANOKE) Herman E. Fulghum, 79, of Roanoke died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at his 
residence.
   Mr. Fulghum was born in Chambers County on Dec. 18, 1920, son of the late Lavonia 
Holloway Fulghum and Willie Fulghum.  He had worked for West Point Manufacturing 
Company's Lanett Bleachery and Dye Works for 15 years before working with a plastics 
company in East Lansing, Mich., for 30 years until retirement.  He was a veteran, a 
Baptist and a Mason.
   Surviving are two sons, Donald Albert Fulghum of Flint, Mich., and Charles Michael 
Fulghum of Florida; a daughter, Mary Jean Schram of Mounds, Okla.; four sisters, Mary 
Wade of Roanoke, Joanne Sanders of Lanett, Betty Jean Morgan of Camp Hill and 
Manona Hogan of Hogansville, Ga.; two brothers, David Fulghum of Five Points and 
Lamar Fulghum of Lanett; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
   Services will be at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. on 
Wednesday, Jan. 19, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.  The Rev. Johnny Williams will 
officiate.

   (HAPEVILLE, Ga.) Olton Bailey of Hapeville, Ga., formerly of the Haywood 
community in Randolph County, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000.
   Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Betty Bailey; daughters Rhonda Richardson and Debbie 
Bass; step-daughters Gail Osborne, Donna Prescott and Vickie Moore; step-son A. D. 
Norred Jr.; brothers Bill Bailey and Floyd Bailey; sister Margaret Hennie; 
15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Higgins & Sons 
Funeral Home, Fairburn, Ga., with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan, Ga.

Lewis Uzell Mathews

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Lewis Uzell Mathews, 89, of Wedowee were 
Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Rocky Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Johnny 
Bishop and the Rev. David Daniel officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Mathews died Sunday, Jan. 16, at Traylor Nursing Home following an extended 
illness.
   Mr. Mathews was a native of Randolph County, born June 17, 1910, son of Marion 
Mathews and Lucy Davis Mathews.  He was retired from Handley Mills.  Mr. Mathews 
was a deacon and a member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death 
by a daughter, Imodean Allums, and his wife, Lillie Mathews.
   Mr. Mathews is survived by two daughters, Dolly Pollard of Woodland and Linda 
Edwards of Phenix City; three sisters, Nellie Rochester of Anniston, Izetta Evans of 
Newell and Mattie Lou Mathews of Wedowee; four grandchildren and five 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were deacons of Rocky Branch Baptist Church.

Lona Mae White

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Lona Mae White, 93, of Wedowee will be 
Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at 2 p.m., at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gary 
Stewart officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. White died Sunday, Jan. 16, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.
   Mrs. White was a native of Randolph County, born May 27, 1906, daughter of Pleasant 
Mann Holloway and Myrtle Bailey Holloway.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist 
Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Etton White, a daughter Maurine 
Nelson, a son, Jimmy Lee White, and several grandchildren.
   Mrs. White is survived by seven daughters, Vire Kinsey of Roanoke, Artis Daniel and 
Faye Long of Oxford, Myrtlene Luker of Delta, Mary Ward of Phenix City, Jane Whaley 
of Lanett, and Sandra Lovvorn of Bowdon, Ga.; two sons, Mike White of Phenix City and 
Powell White of Valley; two sisters, Cordell Adamson of Wedowee and Retha Daniel of 
Roanoke; four brothers, Esul Holloway and Onward Holloway of Newell, J. D. Holloway 
of Bowdon and Doyle Holloway of Wedowee; 26 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; 
four great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be David Reaves, Mike Heard, Wes Kinsey, A. J. Pinkard, Ronnie 
Burdett, Zac Holmes, Kendal White and Derek White.
   Mrs. White will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee, until one hour prior 
to services.  She will lie in state at the church for an hour.

Annie Lee Mitchell

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for Annie Lee Mitchell, 86, of Newell were at 2 p.m. 
Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Jordan's Chapel Congregational Methodist Church, with the 
Rev. Ray Runyan and the Rev. Julian Murphy officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Mitchell died Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Wedowee Hospital.
   She was born in Tallapoosa, Ga., on Oct. 1, 1913, daughter of Dolphus L. Waugh and 
Tina Crosson Waugh.  She was retired from Handley Mills and was a member of Calvary 
Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Mitchell, and a son 
Arthur Morrison Mitchell.
   Survivors include a son, Billy Mitchell of Newell; two grandchildren and four 
great-grandchildren.

David Wesley Strain

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for David Wesley Strain, 91, of Wedowee were Sunday, 
Jan. 23, 2000, at 3 p.m. at Noon Day Congregational Christian Church, with the Rev. 
Harold Bonner and The Rev. Wes Kinsey officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mr. Strain died Saturday, Jan. 22, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. [sic] Strain was born April 28, 1908, son of Albert Strain and Mary Bradley Strain.  
He was a heavy equipment operator and a beef and poultry farmer for many years.  He 
was preceded in death by a son, David Bobby Strain, and his wife, Edith Ire Strain.  He 
was a member of Noon Day Congregational Christian Church.
   Mr. Strain is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gwen Hall of Roanoke; two sons, Tommie 
Strain and Teddy Hue Strain of Wedowee; ten grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 
one great-great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.

Annie M. Scales

   (WEDOWEE) Annie M. Scales, 94, of County Road 15, Wedowee, died Wednesday, 
Jan. 19, 2000, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Services were Saturday, Jan. 21, at Stephens Mission United Methodist Church, 
Wedowee, with the Rev. Joseph Hepburn officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Agnes Benard of Detroit, Mich., Ms. Ruby Lois 
Molden of Wedowee and Mrs. Ann O'Neal of Roanoke; an adopted son, Chester Dion 
Scales of Decatur, Ga.; two special grandchildren whom she raised, Arthur Dwight Heard 
of Long Beach, Calif., and Annette Robinson of Atlanta; two sisters, Ms. Raidia Greggory 
of Chicago, Ill., and Ms. Gladys Reid of Dayton, Ohio; 21 other grandchildren; 
44 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Scales was preceded in death by her husband, the late Luther David (L.D.) Scales; 
two sons, Luther Scales Jr. and Herbert Clinton Scales; and a daughter, Catherine Heard.
   Mrs. Scales was the daughter of the late John Morris Trammell and Lena Stephens 
Trammell, born in Cragford in 1905, the fifth of 14 children.  Mrs. Scales will be 
remembered for her industrious and hard-working spirit and her gardening abilities.  When 
in good health, she would sell her freshly grown garden vegetable all over Randolph 
County.  Mrs. Scales was a life-long member of Stephens Mission United Methodist 
Church.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Leslie D. Richardson

   (LANETT) Leslie D. Richardson, 84, of Lanett died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Mrs. Richardson was a native of Clay County, born June 30, 1915.  She was a 
homemaker and member of Sunset Heights Baptist Church.
   Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl Poole of Lanett and Joyce Ledbetter of Valley; a 
brother, Uvie Dewberry of Valley; a sister, Nannie D. Collins of Columbus, Ga.; three 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
noon (EST) on Tuesday, Jan. 25.
   Graveside services were at 1:30 p.m. at High Pine Cemetery in Randolph County.  
The Rev. Gerald Sykes officiated.

Katie Battle

   (WADLEY) Katie Battle, 88, of Wadley died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Talladega 
Health Care Center, Talladega.
   Funeral services were at County Line Baptist Church, Wadley, on Friday, Jan. 21, at 
2 p.m. with the Rev. W. H. Trammell officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Surviving are one daughter, Jean Zachery of Wadley; four sons, Willie J. Battle and 
Hurshel Battle of Wadley and Robert Battle and Veron Battle of Roanoke; two sisters, 
Lavonia Huston of Alexander City and Molly Wyckoff of New Site; one brother, Annion 
Wyckoff of New Orleans, La.; 28 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, 
12 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
   Mrs. Battle was a member of County Line Baptist Church.

Joseph T. Daniel

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Funeral services for Joseph T. "Joe" Daniel, 66, of LaGrange, Ga., 
will be at Valley Church of Christ, Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at 3 p.m. EST, with burial in 
Meadoway Gardens, LaGrange.  The Rev. Joe Young will officiate.
   Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 until 9 p.m. EST at Resthaven Funeral Home.
   Mr. Daniel died Monday, Jan. 24, at his residence.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lana W. Daniel of LaGrange; three sons, Ronald Daniel 
of Sanford, N.C., Randy Daniel of Manchester, Ga., and Roger Daniel of LaGrange; two 
sisters, Mrs. Linda Jean Murphy of Woodland and Mrs. Ella Cole of Louisiana; two 
brothers, David Daniel of Woodland and Beau Daniel of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren 
and one great-granddaughter.
   Mr. Daniel was a member of Valley Church of Christ and a U.S. Navy veteran.  He was 
educated in Randolph county Schools and received a B.S. degree from Jacksonville State 
University and masters and specialist degree from Auburn University.  He taught in Carroll 
County Schools and was principal of West Point Elementary School for 22 years and 
principal of Tatum School for four years.  He was active in the West Point Recreation 
Department for many years, serving as recreation director, and was a member of the 
Troup County Cattleman's Association.
   Arrangements are by Resthaven Funeral Home, Lanett.

Marshall Gay Williamson

  (NEWELL) Funeral services for Marshall Gay Williamson, 57, of Newell, were Monday, 
Jan. 24, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Daniel and the Rev. 
Bob Howard officiating.  Burial was in Valley Grove Cemetery.
   Mr. Williamson died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Redmond Hospital in Rome.
   Mr. Williamson was born March 14, 1942, in Randolph County, son of William Leonard 
Williamson and Flossie Mae Boggs Williamson.  He was a member of the Woodland 
Quarterback Club, a heavy equipment operator and a Baptist.
   Mr. Williamson is survived by a daughter, Amy Williamson Clark of Roanoke; two sons, 
Marshall Alan Williamson of Newell and Timothy Williamson of Woodland; two sisters, 
Marie Johnson and I. V. Sheats of Newell; two brothers, Durwood Williamson of Newell 
and Lindle Williamson of Wedowee; and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jack Johnson, Barry Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Wayne Williamson, 
Charles Wilson and Joe Sheats.
