OBITUARIES:

Nicholas Clarke Ogle

   (MONTGOMERY) Services for Nicholas Clark Ogle, 22, of Montgomery, formerly of 
Roanoke were at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at First Baptist Church, Roanoke, 
with Dr. Douglas Turner and the Rev. Steve Dean officiating.  Burial was at Randolph 
Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Ogle died Wednesday, Dec. 26, in Lee County.
   He was born in Opelika on Aug. 12, 1979, son of Randall Yates Ogle and Charlotte 
Hardy Ogle.  He was a May 2001 magna cum laude graduate of Huntingdon College, 
where he completed his bachelor of arts degree with a major in communication studies.  
He was a member of the College Programs Council, Dungeon Players, Huntingdon Hosts, 
and the Huntingdon newspaper and literary magazine staffs.  He served as treasurer for 
Lambda Pi Eta, the communications studies honorary.  He was a Wilson Scholar and was 
named to the dean's list of high honors and "Who's Who Among Students in American 
Colleges and Universities."  He was employed with Cunningham Advertising Agency and 
was a member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke.
   Survivors include his mother, Charlotte Ogle of Roanoke; his father and stepmother, 
Randall and Debbie Ogle of LaGrange, Ga.; his grandparents, Hazel Vaughn of Lineville 
and Myrte Hardy of Rogersville; a sister, Laura Ruth Ogle of Roanoke; a brother, Richard 
Yates Ogle of Auburn; and two stepsisters, Laura Solomon of Athens, Ga., and Mary 
Gassaway of LaGrange.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Parker Fausett Moon

   (ROANOKE) Services for Parker Fausett Moon, 88, of Roanoke were at 11 a.m. 
Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Floyd Carmack, Dr. 
Frank McCook and the Rev. Maynard McGinty officiating.  Burial was at Cedarwood 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Moon died Tuesday, Dec. 25, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   A former resident of Louisiana, he was born in Randolph County on March 19, 1913, 
son of Robert S. and Martha Parker Moon.  He had been self-employed in a car salvage 
company and was a member of Antioch Christian Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Virginia Gross Moon of Roanoke; a daughter, Ann Stewart 
of Roanoke; three sisters, Frances Beaird of Lake Charles, La., Lucille Kreiger of 
Cleveland, Ohio, and Sue Hood of Sulphur, La.; a brother, Calvin Moon of Lake Charles; 
three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were David Singley, Scott Stewart, John Stewart, Ray Watson, Robert 
Stewart, Ellis Brown, Denson Blackston and Harold Gross.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Virginia Gross Moon

   (ROANOKE) Services for Virginia Gross Moon, 83, of Roanoke were at 11 a.m., 
Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Floyd Carmack, Dr. 
Frank McCook and the Rev. Maynard McGinty officiating.  Burial was at Cedarwood 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Moon died Wednesday, Dec. 26, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A former resident of Louisiana, Mrs. Moon was born April 5, 1918, daughter of Calton 
H. and Hettie E. Liles Gross.  She was a member of Antioch Congregational Christian 
Church and had worked as a nurse aide.  Her husband, Parker Fausett Moon, predeceased 
her on Dec. 25, 2001, and funeral services for both were on Friday.
   Survivors include one daughter, Ann Stewart of Roanoke; one sister, Frances Horn of 
Roanoke; three grandchildren ans six great-granchildren.
   Pallbearers were David Singley, Scott Stewart, John Stewart, Ray Watson, Robert 
Stewart, Ellis Brown, Denson Blackston and Harold Gross.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Aubrey S. Brown

   (LANETT) Aubrey S. Brown, 90, of Lanett died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Beverly 
Health Care Center, Lanett.
   Mr. Brown was a native of Roanoke, born Oct. 26, 1911.  He was a Baptist.
   Survivors include a daughter, Donna F. Brown; a brother Rayford Brown; and a sister, 
Jimmie Bridges.
   Services were at Resthaven Chapel, Lanett, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, with the 
Rev. Ken Overbie officiating.  Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Resthaven Funeral Home, Lanett.

Bertha Mae Turner

   (ROCK MILLS) Services for Bertha Mae Turner, 91, of Rock Mills were at 2 p.m. 
Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at Rock Mills Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Frank 
Foster and Gerald Sheppard officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Turner died Monday, Dec. 24, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born on Jan. 1, 1910, daughter of J. W. 
and Doshie B. Barfield Yarbrough.  She was employed at Wehadkee Yarns and was a 
member of Rock Mills Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Sanford William Turner; and two sons, Ray Turner and Reed Turner.
   Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Wilford of Roanoke; five grandchildren, 
seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Wayne Boggs, Freddy Boggs, Jimmy Boggs, Wesley Smith, Frank 
Wiggins and Frank Foster Jr.

Lizzie Key Shelnutt

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lizzie Key Shelnutt, 89, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Thursday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Bro. Bill Prince and 
Bro. Edward Herren officiating.  Burial was at Liberty Grove Methodist Church Cemetery 
in Woodland.
   Mrs. Shelnutt died Tuesday, Dec. 25, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Feb. 19, 1912, daughter of Wiley 
Mark and Doshie Payne Key.  She was a homemaker and a member of Napoleon Church 
of Christ.  She was preceded in death by her husband Corbin Shelnutt; and a son Wiley 
Shelnutt.
   Survivors include three daughters, Abigail Strain and Sara Williamson of Roanoke and 
Carolyn Johnson of Valley; five sons, Bonnie Shelnutt, Barrett Shelnutt, Edward Shelnutt, 
William Shelnutt and Ronald Shelnutt, all of Roanoke; eight grandchildren and 
seven great-grandchildren.
   Memorial donations may be made to the Liberty Grove Church Cemetery Fund.
   Pallbearers were Andy Gray, Kevin Johnson, Perry Joe Sudduth, Kevin Sudduth, Joe 
Shelnutt, Terry Shelnutt, Justin Manley and Charlie Shelnutt.

Margie Dale Baker

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Margie Dale Baker, 65, of Wedowee were Saturday, Dec. 
29, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Lowell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wally Armstrong 
officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Baker died Thursday, Dec. 27, at her home following an extended illness.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Baker was born March 25, 1936, daughter of Roscoe 
and Sammie Boggs Hall.  She had lived in Austin, Texas, before returning to Roanoke in 
1973 and had made her home in Wedowee for the past five years.  She was a member of 
Lowell United Methodist Church and had been employed as a sales associate with 
Wal-Mart.
   Survivors include her husband, Perry Baker of Wedowee; two daughters, Cindy Brewer 
of Wadley and Karen Collins of Kansas City, Kansas; two sons, Guy Baker of Wedowee 
and Jay Baker of Austin, Texas; her mother, Sammie Hall of Roanoke; one sister, 
Kitty Fortin of Detroit, Mich.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Freddy Brewer, Micky Collins, Daniel Bozeman, Joe Bradley, Jose 
Valezquez and William Wyatts.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Clay County Hospice, P. O. Box 
1270, Ashland, AL 36251.

Era Bailey Lewis

   (WOODLAND) Services for Era Bailey Lewis, 87, of Woodland were at 11 a.m. CST 
on Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Flat Rock Methodist Church, with the Revs. Ernest Lipham 
and Leron Murphy officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Lewis died Wednesday, Dec. 26, at Wedowee Hospital.
   She was born in Randolph County on Feb. 17, 1914, daughter of T. J. and Ruby South 
Bailey.  She was employed at Callaway Mills and was a member of Flat Rock Methodist 
Church, where she was a pianist for over 50 years.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, William Delmar Lewis, and a great-grandson, Jason Herren.
   Survivors include a son, William Thomas "W.T." Lewis of Woodland; three sisters, 
Mary Watson of Valley, Judy Wilson of LaGrange and Audrey Wood of Houston, Texas; 
two brothers, Arnold Bailey of Woodland and J. F. Bailey of Valdosta, Ga.; 
four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tommy Lewis, Keith Lewis, Arnold Bailey, Ricky Bailey, Greg Bailey 
and Charlie Wilson.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Lexie B. Smith

   (ROANOKE) Lexie B. Smith, 78, of Roanoke died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at 
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services were at Rehope Missonary Baptist Church, LaFayette, on Friday, Dec. 28, at 
1 p.m. with the Rev. Harvey L. Jones officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Surviving are one son, Lamar Pyant of Roanoke; one daughter, Dianne Phillips of 
Roanoke; one brother George Williams of Seattle, Wash.; three sisters, Ada Williams and 
Annie Davis of Cleveland, Ohio, and Minnie Williams Veal of Five Points; a devoted 
special friend Willie B. Matthews; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of 
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
   Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 13, 1923, in Chambers County.  She was preceded in death 
by two children, Ms. Lucile Williams and Harold Pyant, and one grandson, Victor Grant.  
She was a member of Rehope Missionary Baptist Church, LaFayette, and for more than 
18 years was the cook at The Galley and Tara restaurants in Roanoke.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Dr. Gerald Halker

   (HUNTSVILLE) Dr. Gerald "Jerry" Halker, 80, of Huntsville, formerly of Roanoke, 
died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001.
   Dr. Halker was born March 21, 1921.  He served in World War II as an Army Air Corps 
pilot and later worked as a dentist.  He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and 
a life member of the American Dental Association and Florida East Coast Dental 
Association.  He was preceded in death by one son, Sheppard Halker, and a brother, 
Robert Halker.
   Survivors include his wife, Barbara Halker; four sons, Joe Halker of Roanoke, Davis 
Maxson of Huntsville, Jerry Maxson of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Ted Maxson of 
Roxboro, N.C.; seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service was held Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with 
Father Louis Giordano officiating.
   Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
   Arrangements were by Valhalla Funeral Home, Huntsville.

Katie Belle Cantrell

   (WOODLAND) Services for Katie Belle Cantrell, 86, of Woodland were Sunday, Dec. 
30, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Highway First Congregational Methodist Church, with the Rev. 
Vernon Willis and Bro. W. C. Cofield officiating.
   Burial was in the adjoining Cemetery.
   Mrs. Cantrell died Friday, Dec. 28, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Cantrell was born Jan. 4, 1915, daughter of George 
Lewis and Martha Ann Cranford Scott.  She was a homemaker and a member of Highway 
First Congregational Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Herman V. Cantrell, and a grandchild, Robbie Cantrell.
   Survivors include four daughters, Annette Sinns of Hogansville, Ga., Louree Richardson 
and Annie Ruth Dye of Woodland, and Carolyn Fields of Roanoke; five sons, Emory 
Cantrell and Viron Cantrell of Woodland, Rance Cantrell of Roopville, Ga., Earl Cantrell 
of Powder Springs, Ga., and Ussery Cantrell of Temple, Ga.; one sister, Marvelene 
Pinkard of Valley; 24 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and five great-great- 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Steve Cantrell, Phill Cantrell, Bobby Butler, Tony Richardson, Kenny 
Fields, Jeff Cantrell, John Butler, James Butler, Mark Richardson, Danny Dye, Chris Dye 
and Anthony Dye.

OBITUARIES:

William Augustus McMurray Jr.

   (FAIRHOPE) William Augustus "Bill" McMurray Jr. , 83, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, 
at his home in Fairhope.
   Born March 9, 1918, in Roanoke, Mr. McMurray served in World War II and the 
Korean War and received the Purple Heart and other medals and commendations.  He 
retired from the Air Force in 1966 after 22 years.  He was a longtime resident of Fairhope 
and a member of Grace Fellowship Bible Church and Berean Bible Study.
   Mr. McMurray is survived by his wife of 59 years, Paula E. McMurray of Fairhope; 
four daughters, Dottie Long and Sue Combs of Fairhope, Paula Malone of Montrose and 
Jane McMillan of Brewton; two sons, Bill McMurray of Silverhill and Jon McMurray of 
Montrose; four sisters, Ann Massey and Sissy Logan of Birmingham, Jean Cauthen of 
Athens, Ala., and Jane Edwards of Roanoke; 20 grandchilren; nine great-grandchildren; 
nieces, nephews and other relatives.
   Graveside services and interment were Thursday, Jan. 3, at 2 p.m. at Montrose 
Cemetery with Pastor E. C. Moore officiating.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Mercy Medical Home Hospice, 177 
Baldwin Square, Fairhope, AL 36532 or Grace Fellowship Church, 19993 County Rd. 33, 
Fairhope, AL 36532.

Corene Ross

   (WOODLAND) Services for Corene Ross, 61, of Woodland were Monday, Dec. 31, 
2001, at 3 p.m. at Zion Rest Baptist Church Cemetery, Wedowee, with the Rev. Robert 
Mallory officiating.
   Ms. Ross died Wednesday, Dec. 26, at her residence.
   Ms. Ross was born in the Swagg community of Randolph County to the late Thomas 
and Essie Boyd Ross.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Esterleen Ross, and a close 
uncle, George Washington "Washie" Stephens.
   She is survived by one uncle, Sylvester Johnson of Atlanta; a special cousin, Ms. Frances 
Boyd; and several cousins and other relatives.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Zeola G. Allen

   (ATLANTA) Services for Zeola G. Allen, 95, of Atlanta were Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at 
1 p.m. at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church, Five Points, with the Rev. C. H. 
Carlisle, pastor, officiating, along with the Revs. William Phillips and L. B. Houston.  
Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Ms. Allen died Tuesday, Jan. 1, at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta.
   She is survived by three nieces, Elizabeth Smith and Estate Britain of Atlanta and Mary 
Callaway of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two nephews, Willie Holley of Roanoke and Bo Green 
of Chattanooga; and a number of cousins and other relatives.
   Ms. Allen was born Sept. 15, 1907, in Chambers County to the late Joshua Green and 
Mary Cofield Green.  She was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church, Five Points.  
Ms. Allen had resided in Atlanta with her niece since 1993.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

V. L. Owens

   (ROANOKE) Services for V. L. Owens, 64, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 
3, 2002, at Maplewood Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Williams, Otis Hodnett and 
Barry Harlin officiating.  Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Owens died Tuesday, Jan. 1, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
  A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Dec. 27, 1937, son of Y. B. Owens 
and Pearly Baldwin Owens.  He was employed at Amoco Fabrics and Fibers and was a 
member of Center Chapel Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his father, Y. B. 
Owens and a sister, Rudine Manley.
   Survivors include his wife, Frances Owens of Roanoke; his mother and stepfather, 
Pearly and Lonnie B. Norred of Roanoke; four daughters, Wanda Cummings and Rhonda 
Harlin of Roanoke, Kathy Clark of Five Points and Donna Franklin of LaGrange; a son, 
Barry Owens of Roanoke; two sisters Nell Alsabrook of Roanoke and Kate Janney of 
LaGrange; his mother-in-law and father-in-law; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; 
ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Chris Mobley, Jeremy Cummings, Kevin Cummings, Mathew Harlin, 
Ryan Hart and John Najmeh.  Honorary pallbearers were James Spurling, Wayne Hansen, 
James Everett Alsabrook, Steve Dean, David Cummings, Michael Cook and Randal 
Harlin.

Helen Louise Cook

   (ROANOKE) Services for Helen Louise Cook, 60, of Roanoke were at 11 a.m. Friday, 
Jan. 4, 2002, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Parks officiating.  Burial 
followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Ms. Cook died Tuesday, Jan. 1, at his residence.
   She was born in Danville, Ill., on Oct 31, 1941, daughter of Frederick Andrew Nipper 
and Thelma Irene Smith Nipper.  She was employed with Palm Beach Company and was a 
member of Prospect Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents and 
two brothers, Fred "Junior" Nipper and Robert Nipper.
   Survivors include a daughter, Lorraine Cook of Gainesville, Ga.; three sons, Mark Cook 
and Mickey Cook of Franklin, Ga., and Michael Cook of Roanoke; seven sisters, Anna 
Ruth Miller of Danville, Margaret Hardesty of Westville, Ill., Pat Vancamp and Mary Lou 
Hayes of Oakwood, Ill., Thelma Cook of Franklin, Sharon Nipper of St. Louis, Mo., and 
Betty Brown of Westville; three brothers, William Nipper, Jackie Nipper of Danville and 
Kent Nipper of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a half-brother, Paul Nipper of Danville; and 
three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Carl Sellers, Jeff Cook, Greg Cook, Ralph Thompson, Neal Cook and

   (ROCK MILLS) Services for Hattie Louise Yarbrough, 92, of Rock Mills were at 1

officiating.  Burial followed at Rock Mills Cemetery.
   Mrs. Yarbrough died Sunday, Dec. 30, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 18, 1909, daughter of 
Marvin L. and Susan C. Phillips Borders.  She had been employed at Wehadkee Mills and 
was a member of Rock Mills Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, William Lamar Yarbrough.
   Survivors include a sister, Lelia Mae Pool of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Delores 
Burgess of Roanoke and Rena Pike of Rock Mills; five great-grandchildren and 
nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Jimmy Burgess, Anthony Pike, Kyle Burgess, Mark Pike, Chris 
Williamson and Jimmy Williamson.

James A. Johnson

   (STANDING ROCK) Services for James A. Johnson, 83, of Standing Rock were at 
2 p.m. CST on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Standing Rock Methodist Church with the 
Rev. Milton Newton officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mr. Johnson died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   A former resident of Shawmut, he was born in Chambers County on Jan. 18, 1918, son 
of Robert A. and Carrie Still Johnson.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, had 
been employed at West Point Pepperell and was a member of Standing Rock Methodist 
Church.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Johnson.
   Survivors include a son, Fred Johnson of Standing Rock; and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Memorials may be floral or donations can be made to the Standing Rock Methodist 
Church Cemetery Fund.

Juanita 'Nita' Mitchell Ledbetter

   (ROANOKE) Services for Juanita "Nita" Mitchell Ledbetter, 41, of Roanoke were at 
noon on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Highway First Congregational Methodist Church 
with the Rev. Vernon Willis officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mrs. Ledbetter died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at University Hospital in Birmingham.
   Survivors include her husband, Danny P. Browning of Ashland; a daughter, Kayla 
Ledbetter of Roanoke; her mother, Tempie Cantrell Mitchell of Roanoke; a sister, Tammy 
Hall of Roanoke; a nephew and a niece.
   She was born in Randolph County on Feb. 4, 1960, daughter of James Floyd Mitchell 
and Tempie Cantrell Mitchell.  She was employed in insurance sales and was a member of 
Highway First Congregational Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her 
father, Floyd Mitchell, and grandparents, Major and Winne Cantrell, William T. Cantrell 
and Dovie Rollins.
   Pallbearers were Lance Cantrell, Trey Cantrell, Teddy Joe Cantrell, Ray Freeman, 
Monroe Whaley and Drew Cantrell.

William Herbert Wilder

   (BOWDON, Ga.) William Herbert Wilder, 78, of Bowdon, Ga., died Wednesday, Jan. 
2, 2002, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga., from injuries suffered in a car 
accident.
   Mr. Wilder was born in Randolph County, Ala., on Aug. 18, 1923, to the late William 
Hoyt Wilder and Eunice Marie Traylor Wilder.  He was a carpenter with The Herman 
Butler Construction Company.  Mr. Wilder was a very faithful member of Sardis Baptist 
Church and served his country gallantly in the United States Army during World War II.  
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elsie Irene Huddleston Wilder.
   Funeral services for Mr. Wilder were conducted Friday, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of 
Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home in Franklin, Ga., with the Rev. Danny Murray 
officiating.  Interment followed in Sardis Church Cemetery.
   Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Ed Wilder and Dianne and 
Vance Cline; and three grandchildren, all of Carrollton.
   Arrangements were by Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home, Franklin.

Shirley Patillo Tolbert

   (WEDOWEE) Shirley Patillo Tolbert, 49, of Wedowee died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, 
at Wedowee Hospital.
   Services were at Shiloh Baptist Church, Wedowee, on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m., with 
the Rev. Tommy Ackles officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Surviving are her devoted husband of 24 years, Charlie Tolbert of Wedowee; her father, 
Charlie Patillo of Woodland; one son, Wallace Patillo of Roanoke; one daughter, Deloise 
Tolbert of Woodland; one stepdaughter, Linda Young of Alexander City; one stepson, 
Jimmy Drummond of Wedowee; five sisters, Inell Roundtree of Pine Hill, Helen Nunn of 
Woodland, Nancy Green of Graham, Charlie Mae Nunn of Hawk and Barbara Houston of 
Woodland; eight grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
   Mrs. Tolbert was born Aug 26, 1952, in Randolph County.  She was a member of Peace 
and Goodwill Baptist Church, Roanoke.  She was employed by Lamar Manufacturing of 
Woodland for 23 years and later by Trintex Corp. of Bowdon, Ga., for five years.

Timothy Smedley Jr.

   (LAFAYETTE) Timothy Smedley Jr, 57, of LaFayette died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, 
at his residence.
   Surviving are his mother, Mary Frances Smedley of LaFayette; his father Timothy 
Smedley Sr. of Lanett; a daughter, Monica Blackmon of Garfield, Ohio; a son, Timothy 
Smedley III of Euclid, Ohio; his wife, Willie Ann Stafford Smedley; eight sisters, Mattie 
Faye Copeland of Atlanta, Geneva Holloway and Mary Huguley of Lanett, Sophia Bailey 
of LaFayette, Melissa Smedley, Linda Smedley and Candy Brown of Knoxville, Tenn., and 
Teresa Smedley of Cleveland, Ohio; four brothers, Derrick Smedley and Olando Smedley 
of Cleveland, George Smedley of Knoxville and Charles Smedley of St. Louis, Mo.; 
three stepdaughters; and five grandchildren.
   Services were Saturday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 
Lanett, with the Rev. Michael Armstead officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Smedley was born in Troup County, Ga., on Oct. 31, 1944.  He entered the U.S. 
Army in 1963 and was wounded in the Vietnam War in 1969.  He was awarded the Purple 
Heart by the president of the United States.  He retired from West Point Pepperell after 
25 years of service.  He was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

Jesse Rowe Jr.

   (ROMULUS, Mich.) Jesse Rowe Jr., 62, of Romulus, Mich., died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 
2001, at his residence.
   Services were Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 1 p.m. at Mount Olive United Methodist Church, 
Wadley, with the Rev. Hollis Boykin officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include a special niece, Wanda Marie Rowe of Austell, Ga.; one brother, John 
Henry Rowe of Daviston; one sister Mrs. Eddie Lee Morgan of Atlanta; a brother-in-law, 
Bennie Reese of Wadley; and several uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
   Mr. Rowe was born in Wadley, son of the late Jessie and Corena Higgins Rowe.  He is 
preceded in death by a brother, Robert Rowe and two sisters, Jessie Mae Reese and Hazel 
Naomi Rowe.  He worked as a custodian for Romulus City Schools until retirement.

   (WEDOWEE) Willie Ray Boyd, 61, of Wedowee died Saturday, Jan. 5, at his residence.
   Services will be Thursday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, Wedowee, with 
the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating.  Burial will be in the Union Chapel and Antioch 
Cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Clara Pearl Sterling Boyd of Wedowee; a daughter, 
Mrs. Cynthia O'Neal of Wedowee; a son, Nathan Lee Boyd of Wedowee; four grandsons; 
one granddaughter; two brothers, James Aaron Boyd and Johnny Ray Boyd of Wedowee; 
two sisters, Ms. Elizabeth Smith and Ms. Leola Boyd of Wedowee; two aunts; 
his mother-in-law; five sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.
   Visitation and viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 
after 10 a.m.  Mr. Boyd will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services.
   Mr. Boyd was born Aug. 9, 1940, to the late Willie and Annie Prothro Boyd in 
Randolph County.  He was a lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church.  Mr. Boyd was 
preceded in death by a sister, Eloise Sheppard, and two sons, Gathan Todd and Clayton 
Boyd.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Vera Mae Holloway, 73, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Jan. 8,

   Miss Holloway died Saturday, Jan. 5, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Miss Holloway was born March 20, 1928, 
daughter of the Rev. McKinley and Eula Young Holloway.  She was a member of Mt. 
Pleasant Baptist Church.
   Survivors include three sisters, Hazel Burke and Linda Bryant of Roanoke and Dinah 
Ramsey of Cordelle, Ga.; and two brothers, Lawrence Holloway of Wedowee and Pete 
Holloway of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Travis Burke, Chris Holloway, Larry Holloway, James Bryant, Sandy 
Holliday and Hansel Holloway.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Agnes Anderson Ware, 85, of Wedowee were at 2 p.m. 
Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Green's Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ed 
Grooms officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Ware died Friday, Jan. 4, at Wedowee Hospital.
   She was born in Meriwether County, Ga., on Sept. 19, 1916, daughter of Virgil Martin 
Anderson and Mary June Williams Anderson.  She was a 1933 graduate of Manchester 
High School, was employed with the Randolph County Health Department and was a 
member of Green's Chapel United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Clenis F. Ware; two sisters, LouEllen Weldon and Edith Anderson; and 
two brothers, Leon Anderson and Edwin Anderson.
   Survivors include a daughter, Alice Ware of Wedowee; a sister, Gloria Matteri of 
Sebastopol, Calif.; two nieces and seven nephews.
   Pallbearers were Charles Fincher, Guy "Junior" Benefield, Wayne Heard, Jim Gross, 
Larry Strain and Billy Wood.  Honorary pallbearers were James Green, R. P. McManus 
and Larry Conger.

Brooksie Earlene Whitten

   (ROANOKE) Services for Brooksie Earlene Whitten, 82, of Roanoke, formerly of 
Woodland, were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Providence Baptist Church, with the 
Revs. Cecil Halsey and David Daniel officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Miss Whitten died Thursday, Jan. 3, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on Sept. 26, 1919, daughter of Hershel David and 
Lizzy Brown Whitten.  She worked in child care and elderly care and was a member of 
Providence Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents.
   Survivors include three sisters, Bonnie Hanson of Woodland, Oneta Sheffield of 
Gadsden and Betty Nichols of Anniston; and three brothers, Fount L. Whitten of 
Roanoke, Jackson Whitten of Huguley and Joel Whitten of LaGrange, Ga.

Ida Burke Towler

   (ROCK MILLS) Services for Ida Burke Towler, 76, of Rock Mills were at 2 p.m.

   Mrs. Towler died Sunday, Jan. 6, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 26, 1925, daughter of 
Thomas and Carrie Veal Burke.  She had been employed at Amoco Fabrics and Fibers 
and was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Pierce Towler.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mary Sheppard of Rock Mills; two sons, Junior Towler 
and Jamie Towler, both of Rock Mills; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Burke and Calvin Burke.

Melinda Ann Herren

   (WACO, Texas) William "Drew" Herren, 31, and wife, Melinda Ann Herren, 29, were 
killed in a tragic accident on Dec. 29, 2001, in Waco, Texas.
   The leave behind their three children, Dylan, age 9, Cole, age 7 and Katy, age 5.
   Drew is also survived by his father, James Clyde Herren of Centre; his mother Donella 
Jowers of Waco; his grandmother, Eva Herren of Newell; grandmother, Don Garrett of 
Groesbeck, Texas; brother, Ashley Herren of Waco; and many friends and family in 
Randolph County.
   Mindy is survived by parents Rick and Rita Denney of Waco; sisters Jamie Goodnight of 
Mart, Texas, and Renee Weck of Houston; and brother, Rick Denney of Waco.
   A trust fund has been established for their children at Educator's Credit Union in Waco.

Baptist Church.

Ethel Mae Ferguson

   (ANNISTON) Ethel Mae Ferguson, 88, of Anniston died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002.
   Services were Thursday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel, 
Anniston, with graveside services in Randolph Memory Gardens at 2 p.m.  The Rev. 
William Gunn officiated.
   Survivors include a daughter, Gloria F. Ivy of Anniston; two sisters, Mary Daniel of 
Roanoke and Frances Carden of Anniston; caregivers, Jimmie Cox and Sandra Wortham; 
five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Richard Madden, Dr. Jerry Higgins, Dick Voorhees, Hugh Hamilton, 
Dee Gorey and Carey Sikes.
   Mrs. Ferguson was a native of Randolph County, where she lived most of her life.  She 
was a resident of Anniston since 1992 and a member of St. Mark United Methodist 
Church.  Mrs. Ferguson was retired from Handley Manufacturing of Roanoke.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Horace Ferguson.

Rosa Lee Ozley

   (LAFAYETTE) Rosa Lee Ozley, 92, of LaFayette died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at 
Wilders Health Care Center, Dadeville.
   Graveside services were Friday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 
Lanett, with the Rev. Charles Whitson officiating.
   Surviving are a daughter, Betty Jean Hamby of Dadeville; a son, Douglas Ozley of 
Birmingham; three sisters, Beth Stephens of Wadley and Faye Walters and Virginia Sims 
of LaFayette; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Ozley was born in Chambers County on Nov. 11, 1909.  She was retired from 
Avondale Mills in LaFayette after 40 years of service.  She was a member of New Hope 
Christian Church in Chambers County.

   (LAS VEGAS, Nev.) Services for John Giffone, 66, of Las Vegas, Nev., were at 2 p.m.

   Mr. Giffone died Wednesday, Jan. 9, in Ruskin, Fla.
   A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he was born Nov. 17, 1935, son of John Giffone Jr., and 
Hannah Anita Lopato Giffone.  He was an Air Force veteran, was self employed in the 
muffler service business and was a Lutheran by faith.
   Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline McCord Giffone of Las Vegas; a daughter, Anita 
Joy Giffone of Woodland; a son, Rocky R. Giffone of Las Vegas; two sisters, Corinne 
Schwickart of Smithtown, N.Y. and Tanya Tucciarone of Jackson, N.J.; and 
two grandchildren.

Larry Roy Wade

   (FIVE POINTS) Services for Larry Roy Wade, 62, of Five Points will be held at 2 p.m.

   Mr. Wade died Monday, Jan. 14, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   He was born in West Point, Ga., on Oct. 7, 1939, son of Leroy and Mary Fulghum 
Wade.  He had been employed as a railroad and security guard and was a Baptist by faith.  
He was preceded in death by his father.
   Survivors include his wife, Patsy Wade of Five Points; his mother, Mary Wade of 
Roanoke; a son, Terry Wade of Five Points; a sister, Brenda Brown of Roanoke; three 
brothers, Norman Wade, Jerry Wade and Hayward Wade, all of Roanoke; 
a granddaughter and two step-granddaughters.

   (ATLANTA, Ga.) James Edward Chappell, 62, of Atlanta, formerly of Wedowee, died 
Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at his residence.

Marable of Wedowee; five brothers, Melvin L. Chappell and Kenneth Chappell of St. Paul, 
Minn., William Clyde Chappell and Bobby Gene Chappell of East Point, Ga., and Jerry 
Chappell of Stockbridge, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  He 
was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Clyde Chappell; and two brothers, Dewey 
Chappell Jr. and Terry Chappell.
   Services for Mr. Chappell were Monday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m. at Zion Rest Baptist Church, 
Wedowee, with the Rev. William Phillips officiating.  Interment was in the church 
cemetery.

   (WEST POINT, Ga.) Rosa Ella McCormick, 86, of West Point, Ga., died Friday, Jan. 
11, 2002, at her residence.
   Mrs. McCormick, born Dec. 3, 1915, in Randolph County, was the daughter of the late 
John Henry and Victoria Lane Aldridge.  Mrs. McCormick was also preceded in death by 
her husband, Gloomer McCormick, and her daughter, Annie Ruth McCormick.
   Survivors include her son, Curtiss McCormick of Franklin, Ga.; a daughter, Irene 
Borden of West Point; one aunt, Rachel Colson of LaGrange, Ga.; 17 grandchildren, 
59 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a large number of nieces, 
nephews, and great-nephews.
   Services for Mrs. McCormick were at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at the Stiffler-Hamby 
Chapel, LaGrange, with the Rev. Benny Phillips officiating.  Burial was at Potash 
Cemetery.

Tony Bryan Golden

   (ROANOKE) Services for Tony Bryan Golden, 30, of Roanoke, formerly of Five

   Mr. Golden died Sunday, Jan. 13, at his home following an extended illness.
   He was born July 30, 1971, in Dadeville, son of Clyde Randall and Susan Elizabeth 
Earnest Golden.  He was a member of St. Luke's Baptist Church and had been employed 
with ISR Transportation.
   Survivors include his wife, Rachel Cochran Golden of Roanoke; one daughter,

Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Meyer.

Clonts of Riverdale, Ga., and Elizabeth Adcock of Mobile; seven grandchildren and 
12 great-grandchildren.

   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Sept. 11, 1916, daughter of 
J. L. B. Green and Allie Kirk Green.  She had been employed at Belk's Department Store 
and was a member of Roanoke First Baptist Church.
   Survivors include three daughters, Sarah C. Hester of Anniston, Margaret Sossoman of 
Graham, N.C., and Judy Ledford of Douglasville, Ga.; a son, Harold Wilson of Roanoke;

   Mrs. McCord died Friday, Jan. 11, at her home.
   Survivors include her husband, Curtis McCord; four daughters, Brenda Long of 
Whitesburg, Ga., Debbie McCord of Oxford, Kim McCord of Carrollton, Ga., and Judy 
Nolen of Heflin; a brother, Tommy Craft of Carrollton; two sisters, Willie Richardson of

   Mrs. McCord was a native of Georgia, but was a resident of Cleburne County most of

Cynthia Lula Woodgett

   (WEDOWEE) Cynthia Lula Woodgett, 75, of Wedowee died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, 
at University of Alabama Medical Center, Birmingham.
   Services will be Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, Wadley, 
with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include two sons, James R. Woodgett and Arthur B. Woodgett of Detroit, 
Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Rosie B. O'Neal of Wedowee and Mrs. Margaret O'Neal of 
Spokane, Wash.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Betty Jean Lowe of Wadley; her stepfather, 
John Wesley Houston of Wedowee; four brothers, Benny Houston and John W. Houston 
of Wedowee, Guy William Houston of East Point, Ga., and Leney Wayne Houston of 
Lawrenceville, Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. Ruthie Wright and Ms. Freddie Weaver of 
Wedowee and Mrs. Mildred Heath of Ashland; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 
and several nieces and nephews.
   Ms. Woodgett was born Sept. 26, 1926, to the late Willie C. Davenport and Rosie Lee 
Minnifield in Wedowee.  She was a lifelong member of Friendship Baptist Church.  She 
was preceded in death by her husband, John Rufus Woodgett; a son, Melvin Woodgett; 
three brothers, Leroy, Bobby and Harvey Manley Houston; and a sister, Ms. Myrtie 
Herring.  Ms. Woodgett devoted much of her adult life to raising her family in the 
Broughton community and working in local industries, including Terry Manufacturing, 
Handley Textiles and Clegg-Penrose.

Jones Henry Richardson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Jones Henry Richardson, 92, of Roanoke were Sunday, Jan. 
20, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Highway First Congregational Methodist Church, with the Rev. 
Vernon Willis and the Rev. Frank Foster officiating.  Burial was in Highway Memory 
Gardens.
   Mr. Richardson died Friday, Jan. 18, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   Mr. Richardson was a native of Randolph County, born April 8, 1909, son of Tom and 
Marthina Bailey Richardson.  He had been a carpenter, a member of the Masonic Lodge 
and was a member of the Church of God.  He was preceded in death by four grand- 
children, Christopher Bowen, John Kenneth Bowen, Kathy Ann Green and Gregory 
Michael Richardson, and a great-grandchild, Chrissy Schwarz.
   Mr. Richardson is survived by three daughters, Wilma Bowen of Rock Mills and Jessie 
Kennedy and Patricia Boykin of Woodland; four sons, Belmon Richardson of Merritt 
Island, Fla., Roman Richardson and Raymond Richardson of Woodland, and Billy 
Richardson of Roanoke, a sister, Ila Crenshaw of Ephesus, Ga.; 16 grandchildren, 
31 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Lila Fincher Stewart

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Lila Fincher Stewart, 91, of Bowdon died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at 
Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.
   Mrs. Stewart was born Aug. 22, 1910, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the late 
Joseph William and Georgia Ramsey Fincher.  She was a homemaker and a member of 
Sardis Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lindsey 
Stewart, and by an infant daughter.
   Survivors include two sons, Billy Stewart of Roopville, Ga., and Curtis Stewart of 
Bowdon; three daughters, Patsy Daniel of Newell, Betty Shelton of Woodland and 
Marvolene Smith of Ranburne; 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
   Services were at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20, at Sardis Baptist Church, with the Rev. 
Darnell Teal, the Rev. Jackie Traylor, Mr. Judson Bell and the Rev. Roy Wysner 
officiating.  Burial was in the Harmony Congregational Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Music was furnished by the church choir.  Pallbearers were Greg Daniel, Tim Shelton, 
Scott Harrington, Tommy Bradford, Tim Caldwell and Jamie Smith.

Vernon O. Stewart Durham

   (JACKSONVILLE) Services for Vernon O. Stewart Durham, 91, of Jacksonville, were 
Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at 11 a.m. at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Crematory, with 
the Revs. John Holloway and Brian Sanders officiating.  Burial was in Crestwood 
Mausoleum in East Gadsden.
   Mrs. Durham died Tuesday, Jan. 15, at her home.
   Survivors include two daughters, Lucy Morris of Roanoke and Mary Roberts of 
Jacksonville; a sister, Lola Bell Bailey of Blountsville; a brother, Jasper Stewart of New 
Site; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandchildren, Mike Roberts, William Chris, Chris Roberts, Dan 
Roberts, Shrelle Morris, Bobby Washburn and Britt Morris.  Honorary pallbearers were 
Keenagers and Jane Self Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville.
   Mrs. Durham was a longtime resident of East Gadsden, where she was a member of 
East Gadsden Methodist Church, and recently became a resident of Jacksonville.  She was 
active in First Baptist Church and the Kennager's program.  She was preceded in death by 
her husband, J. W. "Bill" Durham; a sister, Edna Morris; and a son-in-law, Hugh Lee 
Morris.

and two brothers, Billy Elders of Anniston and Herbert Elders of Oxford.

   (LINEVILLE) Services for Robert Lewis Pashak, 42, of Lineville were Saturday, Jan.

   Mr. Pashak died Sunday, Jan. 13.
   Mr. Pashak was an avid motorcycle rider and a resident of the Ofelia community in

Michelle Pashak and Sherie Skipper; two brothers, Michael and Shannon Payne; five 
sisters, Patricia, Glenda, Karen, Jerri and Kelly; and numerous nieces, nephews and 
cousins.

   (NEWELL) Services for Mattie B. Lipham Holloway, 83, of Newell were Thursday,

   Mrs. Holloway died Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. Holloway was a native of Randolph County, born Feb. 23, 1918, daughter of 
Webster W. Reaves and Thena White Reaves.  She was preceded in death by a grandson, 
Charles Michael Lipham Sr., and was a member of Union Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Holloway is survived by her husband, Esul Holloway of Newell; a son, Charles 
Lipham of Decatur; two sisters, Mamie Pitts of Enterprise and Mavis Collier of Anniston; 
a brother, T. R. Reaves of Gadsden; and two grandchildren.

Brian Kimo Milstead

   (NEWELL) Services for Brian Kimo Milstead, 21, of Newell were Thursday, Jan. 17,

   Mr. Milstead died Monday, Jan. 14, as the result of an automobile accident.
   Survivors include his mother, Barbara Jean Milstead of Heflin; his father, William Riley 
Milstead of Ozark; two sisters, Tammie Sides of Valley and Heather Roberts of Hawaii; 
a brother, John Richard Milstead of Pell City; two grandmothers, Marie Milstead of 
Lineville and Lucille Locker of Ohio; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jewell and James Milstead.
   Mr. Milstead was a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, and had lived in Clay County most of 
his life.  He was a carrier for the Anniston Star and was employed by Hunters Choice Deer 
Processing Co.  He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Moody.

   (LAAYETTE) Jessie Lewis Bradshaw, 57, of LaFayette died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, 
at Baptist Medical Center, Montgomery.
   Services will be at Vines Funeral Home Chapel, LaFayette, on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 
at noon CST with the Rev. Jessie Bradshaw officiating.  Interment will be in Skyview 
Cemetery, Welch.
   Surviving are two daughters, Vickie Bradshaw of LaFayette and Sophia Chappell of 
Roanoke; four sisters, Lue Ella Patterson of Roanoke, Carrie Daniel of Wadley and Annie 
M. Woods and Beatrice Esters of Atlanta; three brothers, Johnnie Williams and Charlie 
Bradshaw of Jacksonville, Fla., and John Bradshaw of Atlanta; two sisters-in-law, Willie 
Mae Bradshaw and Virginia Bradshaw of Roanoke; a special friend, Maudie Sue Green, 
and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
   Mr. Bradshaw was a native of Chambers County.  He was preceded in death by his 
parents, the late Cleve and Annie Bell Bradshaw.

Gaines Harvey Spears

   (ROANOKE) Services for Gaines Harvey Spears, 86, of Roanoke will be at 1 p.m. 
Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Highway 1st Congregational Methodist Church, with the 
Revs. Vernon Willis, Johnny Williams and S. T. Janney officiating.  Burial will follow in 
the church cemetery.
   Mr. Spears died Monday, Jan. 21, at his residence.
   He was born in Randolph County on Jan. 13, 1916, son of Lon and Annie Mae 
McDonald Spears.  He was self-employed in the timber and pulpwood business and was a 
member of Highway 1st Congregational Methodist Church.  He was preceded in death by 
two sons, Billy Ray Spears and Harlin Spears; an infant son and daughter; a grandson, 
Ricky Spears; two brothers, Bill Spears and Thomas Spears; and two sisters, Lola Bowen 
and Lorene Roberts.
   Survivors include his wife, Louise Smith Spears of Roanoke; three daughters, Frances 
Owens and Sherry Spurling of Roanoke and Judy Hanson of Graham, N.C.; a son, Gaines 
H. Spears Jr. of Dalton, Ga.; two sisters, Alma Folds of LaGrange and Katie Andrews of 
Newnan, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and three great-great- 
grandchildren.
   Mr. Spears will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service.

McLain of Wadley; two sons, Christopher B. McLain of Wadley and Scottie L. McLain of

   Mr. McLain was a former member of the Wadley Town Council.  He was preceded in 
death by his parents, Clester Denny McLain and Walter McLain; and three brothers, Ralph

   Mr. McLain died Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Baptist Medical Center-Montclair in 
Birmingham.

Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.

   Mr. McLain was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County.  He was a World War II 
Army veteran and received the Purple Heart.  He was a merchant marine tankman on the 
Mississippi and Ohio rivers and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church (South).

James H. Howard Jr.

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for James H. Howard Jr., 63, of Roanoke were at 
2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. James 
Cavender officiating.
   Mr. Howard died Monday, Jan. 22, at Hospice LaGrange in LaGrange, Ga.
   A former resident of Lake Charles, La., he was born in Woodworth, La., on Jan. 18, 
1939, son of James J. Howard Sr. and Leona Folk Howard.  He was an Army veteran, had 
been employed as a truck driver and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Priscilla Howard of Roanoke; a son, James William Howard 
of Wawaka, Ind.; and two sisters, Mary Howard Liles of Lake Charles and Hazel 
McEachin of Shreveport, La.
   Pallbearers were firemen from the Rock Stand Fire Department.

   Mrs. Stephens died Thursday, Jan. 24, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A lifelong resident of this area, Mrs. Stephens was born in Clay County on June 26, 
1916, daughter of L. B. and Florence Hanson Parrish.  She was a homemaker and a 
member of Abanda Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan 
Stephens.
   Survivors include a daughter, Betty Wheeler of Wadley; a son, Ronald Stephens of 
Wadley; one sister Margaret Gradante of Dothan; two grandchildren and four great- 
grandchildren.

Brenda Henry Sudduth

Manley and Jewell Gilley Henry.  She had owned and operated Dairy King and was a 
member of Beulah Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a 
brother, Jimmy Nolen.
   Survivors include her husband, Ray G. Sudduth of Newell; one daughter, Patricia 
Hawthorne of Woodland; two sons, Danny Joe Sudduth and Ray Gaston Sudduth Jr. of 
Newell; three sisters, Janie Moore of Franklin, Ga., and Donna Hendricks and Jennifer 
Trask of Roanoke; six brothers, Larry Henry of Las Vegas, Nev., Ted Henry of

Roanoke, and Manley Henry of Luthersville; her stepmother, Lurlleen Henry of Roanoke;

   (ATLANTA, Ga.) King George Thornton, 83, of Atlanta, formerly of Roanoke, died 
Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Ashton Woods Rehabilitation Center, Atlanta.
   Services were Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. at Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church, 
with the Rev. Elijah Jackson Jr. officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include four sons, Calvin Thornton of Atlanta, L. C. Thornton of Stone 
Mountain, Ga., Gene Autry Thornton of Springfield, Va., and Dr. Alvin Thornton of 
Suitland, Md; six daughters, Ms. Earnestine Thornton, Ms. Maggie Rowland and Ms. 
Denise Sims of Atlanta, Ms. Linda Cofield of Decatur, Ga., Mrs. Doris Mbonzo of Stone 
Mountain, and Ms. Tracy E. McLarty of Addison, Texas; his former wife, Ms. Lillie Mae 
Thornton of Atlanta; one brother, Sandy Thornton of Gadsden; one sister, Ms. Rosa Lee 
Cunningham of Cleveland, Ohio; 21 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and several 
nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Thornton was born March 26, 1918, to the late Rig and Maggie Zachery Thornton 
in Franklin, Ga.  He married the former Lille Mae Baker and made Randolph County his 
permanent home.  He joined the former Hunters Chapel Methodist Church, and later 
became a member of the Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a 
member of the Deacon Board until declining health limited his activities.  Mr. Thornton 
will be remembered as a bus driver of many years for Randolph County Training School as 
well as a loyal employee of Wehadkee Yarn Mills in Rock Mills.  He is also well 
remembered as the first black radio announcer to host a Sunday morning gospel music 
radio program on W.E.L.R., which loyal area listeners enjoyed for a number of years.

Laverne Gidley Lovvorn

   (GRAHAM) Services for Laverne Gidley Lovvorn, 76, of Graham were Sunday, Jan.

   Mrs. Lovvorn died Friday, Jan. 25, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in

   A Cleburne County native, Mrs. Lovvorn was born June 19, 1925, daughter of Dave 
and Carrie Lovvorn Gidley.  She had retired from Anniston Army Depot.
   Survivors include one son, Doug Lovvorn of Graham; three grandchildren; two aunts 
and an uncle.

Edmondson of Jacksonville, Fla., and Laura Lucas Pittman of Montgomery; and a 
nephew, Nixon Lucas of Montgomery.
   Alyce was born in Malone in 1906, daughter of Nixon and Ulah Moffitt Lucas, and 
graduated from Handley High School in 1924.  She taught school for several years in this 
area and elsewhere in Alabama.

Eula Mae Carr

   (ROANOKE) Services for Eula Mae Carr, 88, of Roanoke, formerly of Woodland, were 
Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ricky Emery 
and the Rev. Gary Baugh officiating.  Burial was in Mt. Carmel Church of Christ 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Carr died Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   Mrs. Carr was a native of Randolph County, born May 16, 1913, daughter of Warren A. 
Mitchum and Ophelia Bowen Mitchum.  She had been employed with Handley Mills and 
was a member of Liberty East Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Carr is survived by a son, Eugene T. Carr of Twin Lakes, Mich.; a grandson; a 
granddaughter; and a sister Eunice Alsabrooks of Prattville.
   Pallbearers were Keenan Moon, Luke Moon, Ed Mitchum, Shane Lasseter, Gerald 
Gosdin and T. W. Moore.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Charles Rodney Marcum

   (HUBBERTVILLE) Charles Rodney Marcum, 27, of Hubbertville in Fayette County, 
died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002.  Services were Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. at Miles Funeral 
Home Chapel.  Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Howell Marcum of Hubbertville; a son, Dylan 
McCain Marcum of Hubbertville; his mother and stepfather, Shirley Marcum and Jimmy 
Jones of Hubbertville; two brothers Scott Marcum of Hubbertville and Chuck Marcum of 
Roanoke; a sister, Kristie Marcum Smith of Jacksonville; a stepbrother and stepsister, 
Jennifer Jones Madison and John C. Jones of Hubbertville; grandmothers, Odie Mae 
Barton of Brilliant and Jimmie Lou Marcum of Hubbertville; in-laws; aunts, uncles, nieces, 
nephews and other relatives.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hubbertville High 
School in memory of Rodney Marcum.
   Arrangements were by Miles Funeral Home, Winfield.

Chayron Dari Tillis

   (WADLEY) Services for Chayron Dari Tillis, 32, of Wadley, will be at 1 p.m. on 
Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Benefield Funeral Chapel in Wedowee with Brother Tony 
Thornberg officiating.  Burial will follow at Forrester's Chapel Cemetery.
   Mrs. Tillis died Sunday, Jan. 27, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on Nov. 25, 1969, daughter of Jerry Wayne and 
Jackie Raye Stone Taylor.  She had been employed at Wehadkee Yarn Mills.
   Survivors include her husband, William David Tillis of Wadley; two sons, Richard and 
David Tillis of Wadley; her parents, Wayne and Jackie Taylor of Wadley; and four sisters, 
Cheryl Albright and Leslie Smith of Wadley, Melinda Walters of Cragford and Cynthia 
McCormick of Tampa, Fla.
   Pallbearers are Roger Albright, David Knight, Lee Knight, Thomas Dunn, Randall 
Johnson, Malcolm Bassett and Bobby Tillis.  Honorary pallbearers are Hubert Smith, Matt 
Walters and Terry McCormick.
