OBITUARIES:
James Owens Craft
(WEDOWEE) Graveside services for James Owens Craft, 71, of Route 2, Wedowee,
formerly of Sylacauga, were Friday, April 28, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Rock Springs Christian
Church cemetery with the Rev. Harold Bowen officiating.
Mr. Craft died Wednesday, April 26, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke after a
short illness.
A Clay County native, Mr. Craft was born Dec. 15, 1923, son of Shelly and Lois Pope
Craft. He was a WWII Navy veteran and had worked as a truck driver with McClendon
Trucking.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lila Jo Carpenter Craft of Wedowee; one daughter,
Mrs. Bobbie Sue Levque of Roanoke; one son, Jimmy Craft of Sylacauga; three sisters,
Mrs. Marie Williams of Gadsden, Mrs. Julia Hall of Rainbow City and Mrs. Betty
Garsnman of Alberta, Canada; two brothers, Henry Craft of Sylacauga and Charles Craft
of Attalla; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Grandsons and nephews of Mr. Craft served as pallbearers.
Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Julia Ann Weaver
(WADLEY) Julia Ann Weaver, 88, of Wadley died Saturday, April 29, 1995, at
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 4, at 1 p.m at County Line Baptist Church,
Wadley, with the Rev. William H. Trammell officiating. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.
Mrs. Weaver was a native of Randolph County and a lifelong member of County Line
Baptist Church in Wadley, where she served faithfully as Sunday school superintendent
and president of the Missionary Society. She is the widow of the late Wyatt Vernon
Weaver, who died in 1970. She was preceded in death by one son, G. W. Weaver.
Survivors include six sons, John Wyatt Weaver and Rusher Weaver of Wadley, and
A. C. Weaver, Ralph Weaver, Richard Weaver and Raymond Weaver of Detroit, Mich.;
three daughters, Mrs. Addie Rea Phillips, Ms. Seanomia Bassett and Ms. Annie Mae
Weaver of Wadley; two sisters, Ms. Emma Lou McKissic of Washington, D.C., and Ms.
Daisy Webb of Atlanta; two brothers, Loadia Battle of Wadley and Ardis Battle of
Atlanta; twenty-three grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-
grandchildren.
Visitation hours are Wednesday, May 3, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Clark Memorial
Funeral Service in Roanoke. Clark Memorial Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Shunqunia McKissic
(WEDOWEE) Shunqunia McKissic, 8, of Route 2, Wedowee, died Friday, April 28,
1995, when her bicycle was struck by a car on Randolph County Road 15 near her home.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 3, at 3 p.m. at Pine Flat Primitive Baptist
Church, Wedowee, with Elder Thomas Knight officiating. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.
Shunqunia was born in Roanoke and was in the first grade at Randolph County High
School, Wedowee [?].
Survivors include her guardians, Ms. Shirley Knight and Jessie Marable of Wedowee;
her mother, Ms. Mary Ann McKissic of Wedowee; her father, Raymond Lee of Roanoke;
two brothers, Chrishun McKissic and Cedrick McKissic of Wedowee; two grandmothers,
Ms. Ervis McKissic of Wedowee and Mrs. Annie Lois Lee of Roanoke; a grandfather,
Cecil Martin of Chocolocca; and a great-grandmother, Ms. Alma Foreman of Wedowee.
Clark Memorial Funeral Service will be in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Antoine Knight, Demetrius Robinson, Michael Robinson, Antoine
Houston, John Houston and Shane Byrdsong. Cousins will serve as flower attendants.

Nancy Ella Carter
(WEDOWEE) Nancy Ella Carter, 94, of Route 2, Wedowee, died Friday, April 28,
1995, in Northeast Regional Medical Center, Anniston, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Harmony Congregational
Methodist Church with the Revs. Aubrey Prestridge and Roy Connell officiating. Burial
was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Carter was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She wa [sic] born
on April 15, 1901, to Joseph A. and Salley Herren Carter. She was a member of Harmony
Congregational Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include three daughters, Sara C. Stewart of Anniston, Mary Nell Cofield of
Graham and Erma Wilson of Wedowee; two sons, Joe T. Carter of Birmingham and
Earnest H. Carter of Wedowee; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Tommie Simpson, Tommy Cofield, Ashley Simpson, Dennis
Benefield, Stewart Hill, Ben Bailey and Joey Carter.

(ROANOKE) Joel (Joe) Hand, 67, of Roanoke died April 27, 1995 at George H.
Lanier Hospital, Valley.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annie Lee Hand of Roanoke; one daughter, Jacqueline
Rudd of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons[,] Jeffery Hand of Roanoke and Joel Hand Jr. of
Atlanta, Ga.; seven sisters, Mattie Strong of Roanoke, Mable Freeland of Rock Mills,
Maude Clark of Carrollton, Ga., Alice Howard of Roanoke, Ollie Mae Hand of Gadsden,
Lillian Enora Bolden of Birmingham and Elizabeth McCurty of Warren, Ohio; one
brother, John Hand of Stonewall, Miss.; two grandchildren and a host of other relatives
and friends.
Services for Mr. Hand were Sunday, April 30, at 2 p.m. from Mt. Pisgah Baptist
Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating. Interment was in the church
cemetery.
Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

V. R. Bill' Williams
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) V. R. Bill Williams, 83, of LaGrange died Saturday, April 29,
1995, at Florence Hand Home, LaGrange, after several years of illness.
A native of Ashland, Ala., Mr. Williams was born April 21, 1912, son of the late James
David and Mamie Florence Williams. He was retired from Kex Plant of Callaway Mills
Company and had lived in LaGrange since 1945. He was a member of Pineview Baptist
Church, LaGrange.
Funeral services were at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, on Tuesday, May 2,
with the Rev. Steve Comer officiating. Interment was in Meadoway Gardens, LaGrange.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Irene Williams of LaGrange; three sons, James Buddy
Williams of LaGrange, Robert A. Williams of Alpharetta, Ga., and Tim Williams of
LaGrange; one sister, Mrs. Mary Lou Crowe of Sylacauga; six grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren.

Burell B. Yates
(LINEVILLE) Burell B. Yates, 75, of Rt. 1 Lineville, died Monday, May 1, 1995, at
his residence.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, at Mt. Prospect Baptist Church,
with the Revs. Malcolm Robinson, Ray Runyan and Roger Hammett officiating. Burial
will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Yates is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby Yates of Lineville; three daughters, Mrs.
Rudean Lett of Lineville, Joanna McDonald of Wedowee and Rozell Forte of Lineville;
one son, Carey Yates of Lineville; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two
sisters, Marie Gill of LaGrange, Ga., and Ruth Morrow of Houston, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Larry Lett, Robert Forte, Richard Forte, Bobby McDonald, Steven
Yates and Jackie Yates.
Mr. Yates was a native of Randolph County. He was born Jan. 20, 1920, to Chester S.
and Leslie Knight Yates. He was a veteran of World War Two and was retired from the
textile industry. He was a member and deacon of Mt. Prospect Baptist Church.
The family requests that donations may be made to mental health programs.

Billy Joe Finch
(ROANOKE) Billy Joe Finch, 57, of Roanoke died Saturday, May 6, 1995, at his
residence.
Funeral services were Tuesday, May 9, at 2 p.m. at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church,
Roanoke, with the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sallie Finch of Roanoke; two daughters, Mrs. Jonetta
Finch Walton of Fayetteville, N.C., and Ms. Pamela Finch of Warner Robins Air Force
Base, Ga.; one son, Patrick Finch of Roanoke; one brother, Robert Finch of Detroit,
Mich.; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred Stitt of Louisville, Ky., Ms. Maggie Lois Finch of
Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Agnes Woolridge of Evanston, Ill., and Ms. Freddie Finch Davis
of Louisville; and a granddaughter, Raven Alexis Finch of Roanoke.
Mr. Finch was born in Roanoke, son of the late Jack and Cora Bell (Strong) Finch. He
was a member of the deacon board of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, where he served in
all church activities since early in his life. Mr. Finch was employed by Handley Mills for 13
years and later was self-employed as a plumber for 21 years. Mr. Finch was the first black
person hired by the Roanoke Fire Department and served 19 years as a volunteer
firefighter for the city.
Active pallbearers were members of the Roanoke Volunteer Fire Department.
Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church and Western Lodge
#538 Price Hall Masons. Flower attendants were Missionary ladies and matrons of Mount
Pisgah and Lily White Chapter #352 Order of the Eastern Star.
Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

James Mark Windsor
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for James Mark Windsor, 28, of Roanoke will be
Wednesday, May 10, 1995, at 3 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, the Revs. Mike
Whaley and Franklin Foster officiating. Burial will follow at Green's Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Windsor died Saturday, May 6, in a traffic accident while on duty near Woodland.
A resident of Roanoke since 1975, Mr. Windsor was born Dec. 1, 1966, son of James
Lawrence and Jacklyne Pike Windsor. He was a graduate of Randolph County High
School and was employed as a deputy with the Randolph County Sheriff's Office. He was
a member of the Alabama Peace Officers Association and the Alabama Jailers Association.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. June Hancock Windsor of Roanoke; his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. James Windsor, also of Roanoke; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Billie Pike of
Standing Rock; two brothers, Clark Windsor of Woodland and Gordon Windsor of
Roanoke; and a step-son, Cody Michael Roberts of Roanoke.
The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 9.
Flowers will be accepted; memorial contributions to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk
Driving) or to DARE (Drug and Alcohol Resistance) are suggested.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Hancock, Jeff Fuller, Ralph Owens, James Bailey, Gene
Hawes, Bobby McBrayer, Wayne Waldrep and Gary Clark. Law enforcement officers
will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Edna Clyde Wilson
(CARROLLTON, Ga.) Edna Clyde Wilson of Carrollton, died Tuesday, May 2, 1995,
at the Southwest Christian Hospital in Union City, Ga.
Mrs. Wilson, 73, was a native of Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the late Edgar
Marvin Taylor and Ina Holliday Taylor. She was a homemaker, was retired from Hubbard
Manufacturing Company, and was a member of Carrollton Church of Christ and the
Carrollton Recreation Senior Adult Club.
Mrs. Wilson's survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Cooper of Newnan, Ga.; two
sons, Frank Wilson of Alpharetta, Ga., and Larry Wilson of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada;
seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Pauline Hester of
Roanoke, Ala.; a brother, Durward Taylor of Callahan, Fla. Her husband, Newell Franklin
Wilson, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, May 4, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of
Almon Funeral Home in Carrollton. Ministers Patrick Gray and Richard Gibbs officiated.
Pallbearers were Ken Bacon, Ted Henderson, Phil Hester, Milton Pierson, Bayne
Porter and Ray Sanders. Interment was in the Napoleon Church of Christ Cemetery in
Randolph County.

Charles Ray Garner
(AVALTON, Ga.) Charles Ray Garner, 77, of Rt. 1, Avalton, Ga., formerly of
Randolph County, Ala., died Sunday, May 7, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Benefield Funeral Home
Chapel, the Rev. Gene Minix officiating. Burial will be in the Noon Day Congregational
Christian Church cemetery.
Mr. Garner was a native of Randolph County, born Feb. 19, 1918, to Thomas W. and
Ethel N. Sikes Garner. He was a retired long-distance truck driver and was a Mason
belonging to Lodge F&AM 321 of Greenville, Ga.
Survivors include three sons, James R. Garner of Benecia, Calif., Charles T. Garner of
LaGrange, Ga., and Thomas Scott Savage of Avalton; seven grandchildren, seven great-
grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; four sisters, Lucille Graham of Newnan,
Ga., Mary Yates of Winchester, Tenn., Carolyn McDowell of Gardendale, Ala. and
Shirley Garner of Newnan, Ga.; two brothers, Arnold Garner of Hanceville, Ala. and
Bruce Garner of Birmingham, Ala.
Pallbearers will be relatives and friends.
Mr. Garner will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, Ala. The family will
receive friends from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the funeral home.

Louise Gray Benefield
(ROANOKE) Louise Gray Benefield, 84, of Roanoke died Saturday, May 6, 1995, at
East Alabama Medical Center, LaGrange.
A native of Pitts, Ga., Mrs. Benefield was born Feb. 28, 1911. She was a former
resident of LaGrange who had been a resident of Roanoke for several years. She attended
Friendship Christian Church in Randolph County and was a retired employee of the Dixie
Division of West Point Pepperell.
Mrs. Benefield was preceded in death by husbands J. P. Gray and A. D. Benefield and
by a granddaughter, Candice Polite.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Gloria Wright of Merced, Calif.; a son, Jerry Gray
of Biloxi, Miss.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Sisk of Lillian, Ala.; three sisters, Mrs.
Clyde Sanders, Mrs. Ruth Haynie and Mrs. Jeanette Coffee of Cordele, Ga.; four
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was Tuesday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at Shadowlawn Cemetery,
LaGrange, with the Rev. Bill Scott officiating.

Mollie Bettis Hurst
(TALLADEGA) Funeral services for Mollie Bettis Hurst, 82, [were] at 2 p.m.
Saturday, May 6, 1995 at Usrey Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Jack Drinkwater
officiating. Burial was at Hepzibah Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Hurst died May 4 at her residence. A native and lifelong resident of Talladega
County, she was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church and attended Hepzibah Baptist.
She was retired from Wehadkee Yarn Mills.
She is survived by three daughters, Faye Lawson and Fannie Lou Waldrup of
Talladega and Geraldean Kirby of Roanoke; three sons, James A. Hurst and Frankie Hurst
Sr. of Talladega and Billy Gene Hurst of Moundville; three sisters, Josie Knight of
Talladega, Julie Hurst of Oxford and Emma Bunn of Pell City; two brothers, Woodrow
Bettis and Doc Bettis of Columbus, Ga.; 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and
two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Frankie Hurst Jr., Kevin Hurst, Todd Hurst, Wayne Mitchell, David
Waldrup, Arthur Lee Waldrup, Jeff Hurst and Michael Hurst.

Flora Slaughter
(LAFAYETTE) Flora Slaughter, 93, of LaFayette died Wednesday, May 3, 1995, at
her residence.
A native of Chambers County, Mrs. Slaughter was born Oct. 23, 1901. She operated
Slaughter's Store with her late husband for 60 years and was a member of Rock Springs
Baptist Church, LaFayette.
Funeral services were at Rock Springs Baptist Church on Thursday, May 4, at 4 p.m.,
with the Rev. George Palmer and the Rev. Joe Slaughter officiating. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Cook of LaFayette; a number of
grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were grandsons Johnny Welch, Joel Welch, Alec Welch, Joe Slaughter,
Marvin Brown and Stacey Welch.
Sanders Funeral Home of LaFayette was in charge of arrangements.

(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Dura Bailey Jackson, 91, of Route 1, Roanoke were

Mrs. Jackson died Thursday, May 4, at Randolph County Hospital.
A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Jackson was born Jan. 30,
1904, daughter of William Thomas and Josephine Richardson Bailey. She was a member
of Rock Springs Christian Church and had been employed by Handley Mills. She was the
widow of Charles Homer Jackson.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Mary J. Kampe of Gainesville, Fla., Mrs. Dolly
J. Pike of Kennesaw, Ga., and Mrs. Judy Haun of Watertown, Tenn.; four sons, Charlie P.
Jackson of Blackshear, Ga., Ralph Jackson of Leeds, James T. Jackson of Roanoke and
Gene Jackson of Riverdale, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Lois Brown of Valley; 25 grandchildren;
42 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren
Pallbearers were Jamie Jackson, Ray Jackson, Edward Hayes, Terry Jackson, Chris
Pike, Bobby Joe Jackson, David Haun and Kenneth Pike. Grandsons served as honorary

Jim Frank Johnson
(LANETT) Jim Frank Johnson, 83, of Lanett died Saturday, May 13, 1995, at his
residence.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Woodland First Congregational
Methodist Church with the Rev. Earl Rollins and the Rev. Gene Bledsoe officiating. Burial
was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Johnson is survived by one stepson, Hugh Rollins of Woodland; one sister,
Mildred Langford of Opelika; one brother, Garnette Johnson of Valley; six grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Scott Rollins, Wade Rollins, Kenny Rollins, Steve Rollins, Don
Rollins, Lance Rollins, Josh Rollins, Jerry Ledbetter and James Barnetts.
Mr. Johnson was a native of Chambers County. He was retired from West Point
Pepperell. He was a Baptist by faith and a Mason.

(ROANOKE) Graveside services for Monroe Sims, 68, of Roanoke will be held
Wednesday, May 17, 1995, at 3 p.m. EDT at Tift Memorial Gardens, Tifton, Ga., with
the Rev. Curtis Mixon officiating.
Mr. Sims died Monday, May 15, at his home in Roanoke, Ala.
A native of Homerville, Clinch County, Ga., Mr. Sims was born Jan. 17, 1927, son of
George W. and Emily Adkins Sims. He was an Army veteran of WWII and a member of
Roanoke First United Methodist Church. He had worked with Candlewick Yarns in
Roanoke.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Juanita Vickers Sims of Roanoke; one daughter, Mrs.
Cynthia Laura Hodges of Roanoke; one son, Michael Monroe Sims of Alpharetta, Ga.;
three sisters, Mrs. Nadine Exum and Mrs. Eva Exum, both of Nashville, Ga., and Mrs.
Opelia Akins of Sylvester, Ga.; three brothers, Howard George Sims and A. W. Sims,
both of Byron, Ga., and Osborne Lee Sims of Quitman, Ga.; one step-grandchild; and
several nieces and nephews.

Margie Burson Mashburn
(Atlanta, Ga.?) Margie Burson Mashburn died Monday, May 15, 1995, after a lengthy
illness.
Survivors include her son, Walter Mashburn of Kingston Springs, Tenn.; a daughter,
Mrs. Linda Groover, and grandson, Kyle Groover, both of Riverdale, Ga.; and several
cousins.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Striffler-Hamby
Funeral Home in LaGrange, Ga. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 18, at noon with
the Rev. Mike Shirley officiating at the Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home.

Myrtle L. Holloway
(VALLEY) Mrs. Myrtle L. Holloway, 95, of Valley died Tuesday, May 16, 1995, at
Lanier Memorial Nursing Home in Valley.
Mrs. Holloway, a lifelong resident of Chambers County, was born April 17, 1900. She
was a member of Huguley Congregational Christian Church and a retired employee of
West Point Pepperell's Shawmut Mill.
Survivors include one son, Loyd Holloway of Sharpsburg, Ga.; four daughters,
Christine Holladay and Lucille Freeman of Valley and Evelyn Duck and Ethel Raye of
Lanett; four sisters, Sally Bolt and Thelma Barbour of Lanett, Lala Hancock of Roanoke,
and Cordie Mae House of Valley; and 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and nine
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at
2 p.m. EDT Thursday, May 18, with the Revs. J. H. King and Roy Baines officiating.
Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to one's favorite charity in her
memory. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 until 9 EDT at the

(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Velma Adcock Beverly, 88, of Route 1, Roanoke,
were Friday, May 12, 1995, at 2 p.m. from White's Chapel United Methodist Church.
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Beverly died Wednesday, May 10, at her home.
A Randolph County native, she was born Feb. 14, 1907, daughter of Tom and Lura
Clark Adcock. She was a member of White's Chapel Methodist Church and had worked
with Palm Beach Company. She was the widow of Robert Cosper Beverly.
Survivors include two sisters, Miss Lillian Adcock and Mrs. Ora Treadwell; and two
brothers, Curtis Adcock and Durward Adcock, all of Roanoke.
Pallbearers were Charles Windsor, Virgil Adcock, Charles Treadwell, Johnny Adcock,
Wayne Adcock and James Edward Beverly.

Ester W. Fowler
(NEWELL) Ester W. Fowler, 91, of Rt. 1, Newell, died Wednesday, May 10, 1995,
at Randolph County Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, May 12, at Union Baptist Church, with the
Rev. J. D. Bearden and the Rev. Roy Wysner officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mrs. Fowler is survived by two sons, Elbert Junior Fowler of Newell and Billy
Fowler of Lineville; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Fowler was a native of Randolph County. She was born May 16, 1904, to
William Bill and Janis Lenville Wilder. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dallas
Fowler. She was a homemaker and a member of Union Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were Scott Fowler, Ray Wiggins, Matt Davidson, Steve Riddle, Larry
Fowler, and Terry Deese.

Carl Looser
(LAFAYETTE) Carl Looser, 86, of LaFayette died Thursday, May 11, 1995, at
Randolph County Hospital.
Graveside services were Saturday, May 13, at 2 p.m. at Ebenezer Methodist Church
Cemetery in Chambers County. The Rev. John Cole officiated.
Mr. Looser was a native of Chambers County, born July 6, 1908. He was a veteran
of World War II, and he sold automobiles and automobile parts for many years.
Survivors include four sisters, Cassie Sims, Eunice Redmon and LaMerle Parks of
Wadley, and Bertha Lowe of Lanett.
Pallbearers were Ollie Redmon, John Bishop, Jessie Calhoun, Ronald Darnell, Joe
Blanks and Jerome Ison.

(NEWNAN, Ga.) Viola Stephens, 87, of Newnan, Ga., died Thursday, May 11, 1995,
in Newnan Hospital.
Funeral service was at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at McKoon Funeral Home, with the
Rev. Danny Wilson and the Rev. Paul Dennis officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn
Memorial Park, Newnan.
Mrs. Stephens was born, Nov. 6, 1907, in Senoia, Ga. She was a homemaker and a
member of Unity Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, B. G. Stephens of Newnan; a daughter, Hazel
Robertson of Rock Mills; a son, Ronald Stephens of Newnan; a sister, Edna Bledsoe of
Atlanta; three brothers, Hoyt Hubbard, Sr., and Ewell Hubbard of Newnan and Oliver
Hubbard of Florida; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Nat Hubbard, Pat Hubbard, Charles Bledsoe, George Couch, Jimmy

Doris Jane Marsh Lane
(WEDOWEE) Doris Jane Marsh Lane, 54, of Route 2, Wedowee, died suddenly on
Wednesday, May 17, 1995, at her residence.
Funeral services were Sunday, May 21, at 2 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist
Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. Clyde M. Jones, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Lane was born in Wedowee, daughter of the late Raymond and Augusta Chappell
Marsh. She was preceded in death by two children; a daughter, Janice Lane (who died at
an early age of spinal meningitis) and a son, Preston Lane (who died at age 20). Mrs. Lane
was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Herman Lane of Wedowee; one son, James Marsh of
Wedowee; two daughters, Ms. Gwendolyn Lane and Ms. Jacqueline Lane of Wedowee;
one brother, Raymond Wesley Marsh of Detroit, Mich.; five sisters, Ms. Catherine Turner
of Wedowee, Ms. Mary Frances Gaddis, Ms. Ruby Crawford and Mrs. Jimmie Rogers of
Detroit and Ms. Betty Mayes of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Flower attendants were grandchildren. Pallbearers were Robert Earl Smith, Jerry
Rutlin, John Will Denny, Michael Terrell, James Griffin Terrell, Ray Smith, Robert Nunn

Robert Eugene Bobby' Adams
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Robert Eugene Bobby Adams, 73, of Roanoke
were Tuesday, May 23, 1995, at 3:30 p.m. from Roanoke First Baptist church with Dr.
Douglas Turner officiating. Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery with full military honors.
Mr. Adams died Sunday, May 21, at Randolph County Hospital.
A Randolph County native, he was born Sept. 24, 1921, son of Joseph Franklin and
Lillian Hill Adams. He was an Army veteran of WWII and the Korean War and a member
of Roanoke First Baptist Church. He was the chief warrant officer of the local National
Guard unit.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Joy Powell Adams of Roanoke; two daughters, Mrs.
Susan Poole of Baton Rouge, La., and Mrs. Joy Cauthorn of Sikeston, Mo.; one sister,
Mrs. Betty Ziglar of Roanoke; two brothers, Frank Adams of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and
Fred Adams of Sacramento, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Joe Adams, John Adams, Adam Slay, Curtis Slay, B. B. Slay and Jeff
Adams. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be [sic - were] members of the Goodfellows
Sunday School Class and members of the V. F. W.

Annette H. Griggs
(ATLANTA) Funeral services for Annette H. Griggs, 56, of Atlanta were at one
o'clock Saturday afternoon, May 20, 1995 at Friendship Baptist Church in the Bacon
Level community, Roanoke, Ala. Officiating ministers were the Rev. Eric Ware,
Friendship pastor, and the Rev. Virgil Sims, pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in
Atlanta, Ga.
Mrs. Griggs, daughter of the late Willie and Bessie Clark Holley, was born in Randolph
County, Ala., on May 6, 1939. At an early age she joined Friendship Baptist Church. She
was married to Clarence Griggs. When the family moved to Atlanta in 1962, she joined
First Macedonia Baptist Church and served faithfully on the Mother's Board and in the
Senior Choir.
Survivors include one son, Reginald; four daughters, Mrs. Jennifer Philpot, and Winda
F., Veronica and Cassandra Griggs; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Brown and Mrs. Janice Kirby;
her grandmother, Mrs. Cora L. Holley of Roanoke; one aunt, Mrs. Enola Treadwell of
Lanett; three uncles, Eugene Holley of Newark, Del., Edward Holley of Maywood, Ill.,
and Bobby Holley of Roanoke; nine grandchildren, a devoted friend, Frank Jewell; and a
host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers were Garfield Brown, Cedric Beasley, Kirk Kirby, Willie Hampton, Len
Davidson and Jason Rogers. Flower ladies were family and friends.

Ralph Edd Whaley
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Ralph Edd Whaley, 61, of Roanoke were Saturday,
May 20, 1995, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Revs. Barry Cosper and Frank Foster
officiating. Burial was at Midway Methodist Church Cemetery in Wedowee.
Mr. Whaley died suddenly on Friday, May 19, at Randolph County Hospital in
Roanoke.
A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born May 17, 1934, son of
Charlie and Ruby Cofield Whaley. He owned and operated a tire and wrecker service in
Roanoke and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his
parents and a brother, Tiny Whaley.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jane Calhoun Whaley of Roanoke; one daughter, Mrs.
Patricia Sweatt of Wadley; two sons, Timothy Edward Whaley and Charles Michael
Whaley, both of Roanoke; one sister, Mrs. Geneva Bailey of Orlando, Fla.; one brother,
Hope Whaley of Roanoke; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Shiflett died Monday, May 15, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born July 5, 1907. She was
a homemaker and a member of the World Church of Christ.
Survivors include three sons, E. T. Shiflett of Woodland, Bill R. Shiflett of Belen,
N.M., and E. O. Shiflett of Buchanan, Va.

Mattie Ruth Whitlow Johnson
(CINCINNATI, Ohio) Mattie Ruth Whitlow Johnson, 57, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died
Thursday, May 18, 1995, at her residence.
Funeral services were Monday, May 22, at 1 p.m. (CDT) at Mt. Carrie Baptist Church,
Franklin, Ga., with the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating. Burial was in State Line Baptist
Church Cemetery, Glenn, Ga.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Roanoke, daughter of the late Plumer Dunson and the
former Mrs. Geneva Houston Dunson. She was a graduate of Randolph County Training
School and was employed as a seamstress for more than 18 years at Palm Beach Company
in Roanoke until it closed. She was the former wife of Charlie Herbert Whitlow of
Roanoke. After moving to Cincinnati, nine years ago, she became active in the New
Friendship Baptist Church, Cincinnati.
Survivors include three sons, Herbert L. Whitlock of Roanoke, Jerome Whitlock of
Washington, D.C., and Gregory D. Whitlock of Honolulu, Hawaii; her mother, Mrs.
Geneva Houston of Cincinnati; four brothers, Curtis Dunson of Cincinnati, Robert L.
Dunson of Atlanta and James Randy Dunson and Clinton Dunson of Roanoke; three
sisters, Ms. Annie Ruth Trammell of Roanoke, Ms. Willye Ruth Dunson of Atlanta and
Ms. Betty Jean Dunson of Detroit, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.

(ONEONTA) Mattie M. Walker, 84, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, May 17, 1995, at
Blount Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
Mrs. Walker was a native of Randolph County, daughter of the late Garrett and Fannie
Bailey Holloway. She was retired from Tolbert General Store, Stright Mountain, and
attended Union Hill Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Nila Jean Beard of Oneonta and Mrs. Helen
Casey of Huntsville; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, May 19, at 11 a.m. at Union Hill Church of the
Nazarene, Stright Mountain, with the Rev. Brian Casey and the Rev. Bobby Corley
officiating. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery, Stright Mountain.

Methodist Church and had worked as a self-employed seamstress.

Wilson Hurst Beverly of Roanoke; 28 nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and
great-nephews.

Jennie V. Alsabrook
(WADLEY) Jennie V. Alsabrook, 80, of Wadley died Friday, May 19, 1995, at Health
South in Birmingham.
A native of Sale Creek, Tenn., Mrs. Alsabrook was a resident of Wadley for the past
56 years. She graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in home economics
and began a long teaching career in Wadley in 1939. She was a member of Roanoke
Church of Christ and the Inter Se Club.
Surviving are two sons, W. Harvey Alsabrook, Jr., of McDonough, Ga., and Randall
Alsabrook of Hoover; three grandchildren; one sister, Patsy Sidwell of Wadley; and two
brothers, Jack V. Kennedy and J. Scott Kennedy of Clearwater, Fla.
Funeral services for Mrs. Alsabrook were Tuesday, May 23, at 2 p.m. at Roanoke
Church of Christ, with minister Gerald Romine officiating. Burial was in Wadley City
Cemetery.

Floyd James Henson
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Floyd James Henson, 80, of Roanoke, formerly of
Greenville, were Saturday, May 27, 1995, at 11 a.m. from Roanoke First United
Methodist Church, the Rev. Milton Booth officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory
Gardens.
Mr. Henson died Thursday, May 25, at his home after a short illness.
A native of Belk, Fayette County, Ala., he was born Feb. 24, 1915, son of Fred D. and
Ethel Lee Henson. He was an army veteran of World War II and had worked as a
radiology technician at L. V. Stabler Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Mr. Henson moved
to Roanoke in 1992, having resided in Greenville for 47 years. He was preceded in death
by his parents; one sister, Mrs. Dorles Harrod; and six brothers, Nolen, Odas, Ted,
Lawrence, Ferman and Don Travis Henson.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rosa Nell Henson of Roanoke; two sons, Floyd Larry
Henson of Greenville and Philip G. Henson of Roanoke; three sisters, Mrs. Daphne
Underwood, Mrs. Verna Mae Garrison and Mrs. Maxine Chaffin, all of Guin; three
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Harry Berton Hilliard, 73, of Roanoke were

Mr. Hilliard died Tuesday, May 23, at the V. A. Hospital in Tuskegee.
A former resident of Rock Mills, Mr. Hilliard was a native of Pennsylvania, born
Feb. 7, 1922, son of Paul and Sarah Timblin Hilliard. He was an army veteran of World
War II and a member of Rock Mills United Methodist Church. He had worked as a coal
miner in Pennsylvania.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Alma Hilliard of Roanoke; one sister, Miss Ruth
Hilliard of Calvin, Pa.; three brothers, Fred Hilliard, Gill Hilliard and Henry Hilliard of
Butler, Pa.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Sybil Kitchens of Roanoke; three step-grandchildren;
eight step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews.
Pallbearers were Wallace Bennett, Wallace Durson, Jackie Dudley, Carey Bennett,

Ross Franklin Chambers
(BOWDON, Ga.) Ross Franklin Chambers, 85, of Bowdon, Ga., died Thursday,
May 25, 1995, following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Carroll County, Ga., May 11, 1910, son of the late Albin A. and
Minnie Simpkins Chambers. Mr. Chambers was a lifelong resident of the area, an alumni
[sic - alumnus] of Berry School, and a deacon of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. An avid
lover of gospel music, he taught singing schools, wrote a number of gospel songs, served
as chorister of Pleasant Grove and was chairman of the all-day singing for many years. He
was a retired poultry farmer.
Survivors include a son, Ronny Chambers of Bowdon; a daughter, Harvie Belle
Traylor of Bowdon; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, the Rev.
Hollis Chambers of Bowdon; and a sister, Mrs. Gladys C. Prather of Carrollton, Ga.
Funeral services were Saturday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church,
with the Rev. W. M. Wiggins officiating. Music was under the direction of Lowell
McManus. Pallbearers were Bobby Word, Mike Chambers, Scott Benefield, Keith Noles,
Ronny Chambers II and Hanley Parmer. Interment was in the church cemetery, with the
Rev. Doug Weaver in charge of graveside services.

(LAFAYETTE) Ida Mae Baker, 78, of LaFayette died Sunday, May 21, 1995, at
George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
Services for Mrs. Baker were Saturday, May 27, at 11 a.m. from Mt. Pisgah Baptist
Church with the Rev. Michael Stiggers officiating. Interment was in the Bell Chapel
Cemetery.
Mrs. Baker was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and Lily of the Valley,
Chapter 56, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Cornelia Brooks of LaFayette and Mrs. Sally
Hunter and Mrs. Lavada Philpotts of Detroit, Mich.; two brothers, Earle McCoy of
Detroit and Eddie McCoy of Opelika; a devoted nephew, Johnny Baker of LaFayette, a

Church in Standing Rock with the Rev. W. H. Trammell officiating. Interment was in the
church cemetery.
Mrs. Atkinson was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Mr. Landers is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vinnie Nixon Landers of Roanoke; one
daughter, Betty Kirby of Lanett; one son, Thomas Elton Landers of Lanett; four

Landers, both of LaGrange, Ga., and Glynnis Mann of Columbus, Ga.; and one brother,
Devaughn Landers of Roanoke.
Mr. Landers was born on Sept. 10, 1914, in Chambers County, Ala., to John and
Bessie Lee Landers. He was retired from Callaway Mills as a spinner.

Mr. Mayfield died Thursday, May 25, at his home.
A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, he was born Dec. 11, 1930, son of
Thomas Jefferson and Sara Laverne Strickland Mayfield. He was an air force veteran of
the Korean War.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan Mayfield Kilgore of Bremen, Ga.; two sisters,
Mrs. Jean Curtis of Florence and Mrs. Mary Sue Lewis of Niangua, Mo.; four brothers,
Walter J. Mayfield and Donnie Hugh Mayfield, both of Roanoke, Tim Loyd Mayfield of
Virginia and Charlie Clay Mayfield of Union Springs; three grandchildren and several
