OBITUARIES:

Dorothy A. Smitherman

   (WOODLAND) Services for Dorothy A. Smitherman, 75, of Woodland were at 3 p.m. 
Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bobby Kirby and Chris 
Mitchell officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Smitherman died Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Wedowee Hospital.
   She was born in Randolph County on June 17, 1925, daughter of Tom and Velma 
Dewberry Gosdin.  She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Robert Smitherman of Woodland; two daughters, Syble 
Rogers of Woodland and Betty Pool of Roanoke; a sister, Kathleen Ray of Wedowee; 
four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Memorials may be floral or donations can be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, 
Fellowship Hall Building Fund, 2348 County Road 333, Wedowee, AL 36278.
   Pallbearers were Randy Akins, Barry Johnson, Jerry Walker, Blair Parker, Doris Akins 
and Roy Traylor.

Joe Bob McManus

   (ROOPVILLE, Ga.) Services for Joe Bob McManus, 80, of Roopville, Ga., were 
Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Veal Congregational Methodist Church with the 
Revs. Ronny Eidson, Leron Murphy and Hubert Chambers officiating.  Burial was in the 
Veal Cemetery.
   Mr. McManus died Thursday, Nov. 30.
   A native of Randolph County, he was born Jan. 10, 1920, son of the late Amos Marshall 
and Linnie Washington McManus.  Mr. McManus was retired from work as a poultry 
farmer and school bus driver for Carroll County.  He was a member of Veal 
Congregational Methodist Church.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Durell 
McManus, and a sister, Imogene Bailey.
   Survivors include his wife, Della Morrow McManus of Roopville; a son Barry 
McManus of Roopville; five brothers, Bayward McManus of Jonesboro, Ga., Burns 
McManus and J. R. McManus of LaGrange, Ga., Marshall McManus of Phenix City and 
Murphy McManus of Bremen, Ga.; and one grandson.
   Music for the service was by Robert Ivey.  Pallbearers were Dwayne McManus, J. R. 
McManus, Burns McManus, Mike McManus, Murphy McManus, Bayward McManus and 
Ricky McManus.  Honorary pallbearers were Winford Cates, Barry Payton, Jason Moore 
and Quinton Gay.
   Arrangements were by Rainwater & West Funeral Home, Bowdon, Ga.

Ethol M. Orlando

   (BIRMINGHAM) Services for Ethol M. Orlando, 78, of Birmingham were Saturday, 
Dec 2, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Midway United Methodist Church, Wedowee, with the Revs. Ed 
Grooms and Benny Cosper officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Orlando died Tuesday, Nov. 28.
   She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church, American Business Women's 
Association, Women in Construction Association and Fraternal Order of Eagles, AERIE 
#972.
   Surviving are one daughter, Sandra M. Langley of Birmingham; one son, Roy C. 
Murphy of Irondale; and three grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Jefferson Memorial, Trussville.

Eris Jones

   (ROANOKE) Ms. Eris Jones, 83, of Roanoke died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at 
Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Services were Saturday, Dec. 2, at 2:30 p.m. at Rock Mills Baptist Church, with the 
Rev. Quintin E. Tibbs and the Rev. Tyrone Edwards officiating.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery.
   Survivors include two daughters, Lera Ann Jones of Atlanta, Ga., and Willie Mae Jones 
of Roanoke; two brothers, Jessie Allen Jr. and Robert Allen of Franklin, Ga.; a sister, 
Willie Maude Cameron of Franklin; and four grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Posie Freeland, her husband, 
Wallace Jones; and a grandson.
   Ms. Jones was a native of Heard County, Ga.  She joined New Hope Baptist Church, 
Heard County, during her youth, later uniting with Rock Mills Baptist Church after 
settling with her family in Randolph County.  Ms. Jones was a faithful member of Rock 
Mills Baptist Church, where she served as president of both the choir and the Missionary 
Society.  In her more active years, she was well known and loved for being able to touch 
the heart through her eloquent prayers.  Ms. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, 
Wallace Jones in 1978.  In recent years, her church activites were limited because of 
declining health due to complications from diabetes.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Nora Simpson Stedham

   (ANNISTON) Services for Nora Simpson Stedham, 86, of Anniston were Thursday, 
Nov. 30, 2000, at 3 p.m. at Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston, with William B. 
Kughn and the Rev. Tom Bell officiating.  Burial was in Forestlawn Gardens.
   Mrs. Stedham died Monday, Nov 27, at Jacksonville Health & Rehab Center, 
Jacksonville.
   Survivors include a son, Mike Stedham of Anniston; a sister, Neva Sharp of Lincoln; a 
brother, R. D. Simpson of Carrollton, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were James Simpson, Hal Simpson, Chuck Simpson, David Simpson, Darrell 
Simpson and Gene Sharp.  Honorary pallbearers were Cecil Stedham Jr., Wayne Stedham, 
Richard Stedham, Garry Stedham, Charles Stedham and Glenn Stedham.
   Mrs. Stedham was a native of Randolph County and lived in Anniston for the past 53 
years.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Stedham.  Mrs. Stedham was a 
member of Pine Hill Church of Christ in Randolph County and Central Church of Christ in 
Anniston.  She was a homemaker and worked with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program 
(RSVP) and was a former bookkeeper at M & S Drugs of Anniston.  In lieu of flowers, 
the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society of 
Alabama, 1100 Ireland Way, Birmingham, AL 35205 or The American Diabetes 
Association, 200 Office Park Drive Suite 303, Birmingham, AL 35223.
   Arrangements were by Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston.

Nell C. Whitaker

   (FIVE POINTS) Nell C. Whitaker, 95, of Five Points died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at 
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Whitaker was born Jan. 5, 1905, in Wilkinson County, Ga., daughter of the late 
John Aaron and Annie Rebecca Lavender Vinson.  She had made her home in Five Points 
for the last 12 years, having previously been a resident of LaGrange, Ga.  She was a 
member of East Vernon Baptist Church, LaGrange and was a homemaker.  She was 
married to the late Buck Whitaker.
   Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and Myron Milford of Five Points; 
two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Loyd Presbyterian Church 
Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Karcher officiating.
   Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Dovie Mayo Mitchell

   (JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.) Services for Dovie Mayo Mitchell, 87, of Johnson City, 
Tenn., formerly of Wedowee, were Friday Dec. 1, 2000, at 11 a.m., at Jordan's Chapel 
Congregational Methodist Church with the  Rev. Chris Mitchell officiating.  Burial 
followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Mitchell died Tuesday, Nov. 28, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
   Mrs. Mitchell was a native of Randolph County, born March 4, 1913.  She was a Baptist 
by faith and a homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Mitchell.
   Mrs. Mitchell is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, J. L. and Patsy Mitchell of 
Johnson City; a granddaughter; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.
   Pallbearers will be family and friends.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Hermon William Harry

   (ROANOKE) Services for Herman William Harry, 86, of Roanoke will be at 11 a.m. on 
Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, with the Rev. Milton Booth 
officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Harry died Monday, Dec. 4, at his residence following an extended illness.
   A native of Heard County, Ga., he was born on Sept. 10, 1914, a son of Jason and Ora 
Sheppard Harry.  He had been self-employed as a wholesaler, was an Army veteran of 
World War II and a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Virgie M. Harry of Roanoke; a daughter, Joyce McKinney of 
Roanoke; a brother, A. D. Harry of Lanett; two grandsons; and several nieces and 
nephews.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Roanoke First 
United Methodist Chhurch, P.O. Box 40, Roanoke, AL 36274, or to your favorite charity.
   Pallbearers will be Donnie Cash, Jerry Cotney, William Morris, Craig Prestridge,

Romie R. Liles

   (WADLEY) Graveside services for Romie R. Liles, 88, of Wadley were Tuesday, Dec. 
5, at 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery at Malone, with the Rev. Thompson Pitts officiating.
   Mr. Liles died Sunday, Dec. 3, at his home.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Liles was born April 24, 1912, son of Robert 
Henry and Susan M. Moncus Liles.  He was a farmer and a member of Malone Baptist 
Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Hodge Liles of Wadley; two daughters, Mollie 
Stewart of Wadley and Nancy Stephens of Mellow Valley; seven grandchildren; and seven 
great-grandchildren.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Pine Grove or Antioch 
Cemetery Fund.
   Pallbearers were Brad Stephens, Greg Stephens, Brian Stephens, Rodney Bailey, Chad 
Hopkins and Jon Parker.  Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Parker, Krissy Stephens,

Marie Green Heard

   (ROANOKE) Services for Marie Green Heard, 90, of Roanoke were Monday, Dec. 4, 
2000, at noon at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Don Quick and Durwood 
Williams officiating.  Burial was in White's Chapel Cemetery.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Heard was born May 11, 1910, daughter of 
Dave and Josie Prescott Green.  She was a homemaker and a member of Union Hill 
Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jack Heard.
   Survivors include two daughters, Annie R. Johnson of Roanoke and Betty Griffin of 
Fairburn, Ga.; one sister, Robbie Rhodes of Huntsville; and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were A. G. Upchurch, Hollis Upchurch, George Webb and R. J. Reynolds.

Joe Frank Tennant

   (ROANOKE) Services for Joe Frank Tennant, 75, of Roanoke were Monday, Dec. 4, 
2000, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Don Quick, M. G. Cofield 
and Don Parrish officiating.  Burial was at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Tennant died Saturday, Dec. 2, at his home.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Tennant was born Nov. 11, 1925, a son of 
Charles Albert Tennant Sr. and Nancy Carpenter Tennant.  He was a World War II Navy 
veteran and had retired from the Roanoke Post Office.  He was preceded in death by a 
brother, Tom Tennant.
   Survivors include his wife, Sue Kirby Tennant of Roanoke, one daughter, Sherry Davis 
of Roanoke; a son, Bill Tennant of Olney, Ill.; four sisters, Mary Jane Shumate, Rachel 
Sanders and Sara Benefield, all of Birmingham, and Ruth Yarbrough of Bainbridge, Ga.; 
two brothers, Charles Tennant of Dublin, Ga., and W. Bartow Tennant of Chesapeake, 
Va.; and two grandchildren.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Chattahoochee Hospice 
(#6 Medical Park N., Valley, AL 36854).
   Pallbearers were Bill Kirby, Bob Kirby, Jim Davis, Scott Manley, Howard Manley and 
Joseph Davis.

Duane Leroy Hudson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Duane Leroy Hudson, 74, of Roanoke, will be at 3 p.m. 
Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Roanoke First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tex 
Ergle officiating.  Burial will be at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Hudson died Sunday, Dec. 3, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   He was born in Windom, Minn., on Aug. 15, 1926, son of Leroy and Ruth Nerece 
Hudson.  He was employed as a printer with Federal Cartridge.  He was a Navy veteran of 
World War II and a member of Roanoke Masonic Lodge, American Legion, VFW of Elk 
River and Roanoke First United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Peggy Hudson of Roanoke; three daughters, Diane Thomas 
of St. Cloud, Minn., Jane O'Kronglis of Elk River, Minn., and Becky Gamm of 
Zimmerman, Minn.; four sons, Steve Hudson of St. Cloud, Bill Hudson of Coon Rapids, 
Minn., Jonathan Hudson of Sante Fe, N.M., and Rob Hudson of Los Angeles, Calif.; a 
step-daughter, Barbara Larson of Stone Mountain, Ga.; three sisters, Janett Thomas of 
Anoka, Minn., Mary Lee Grand of Plymouth, Minn., and Peggy Dobbins of Minnetonka, 
Minn.; two brothers, Warren Hudson of Elk River, and George Hudson of Maple Grove, 
Minn,; seven grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home in Roanoke from 5 to 8 
p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6.  Mrs. Hudson will lie in state at the church for one hour 
beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Mattie Will Eiland

   (WADLEY) Services for Mattie Will Eiland, 89, of Wadley will be at 2 p.m. 
Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Macedonia Baptist Church, Wadley, with the Revs. Johnny 
Bishop and Zenus Windsor officating.  Burial will follow at Forrester's Chapel Cemetery.
   Mrs. Eiland died Monday, Dec. 4, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on Nov. 27, 1911, daughter of John Wyatt and 
Fannie Ella Hadley Heflin.  She was a self-employed store owner and a member of 
Macedonia Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Buck Eiland.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mary Sue Belyeu of Opelika; a son, Albert Eiland of 
Wadley; two sisters, Hilma Heflin Belek of Columbus, Ohio, and Sue Heflin Denman of 
Titusville, Fla.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Eiland will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Wilma Vowell Carden

(NEWELL) Services for Wilma Vowell Carden, 59, of Newell were Tuesday, Dec. 5, 
2000, at 3 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Lendon Fields 
officiating.  Burial was in the Union Baptist Church cemetery.
   Mrs. Carden died Friday, Dec. 1, at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
   Mrs. Carden was born Dec. 6, 1940, a native of Randolph County and daughter of 
Albert Dewey Vowell and Elma Jane Lipham Vowell.  She was a member of Amazing 
Grace Church and had worked at Alabama Flea Market.
   Mrs. Carden is survived by one son, Russell Carden of Wedowee, and a granddaughter, 
Monique Carden of Newell.
   Pallbearers were family and friends.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Lowell Lee Brown

   (FAYETTEVILLE, Ga.) Services for Lowell Lee Brown, 61, of Fayetteville, GA, were 
at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Benefield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Daniel 
officiating.  Burial followed at Highway Congregational Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Brown died Thursday, Nov. 30, at Southwest Christian Hospice in Fayetteville 
following an extended illness.
   A native of Randolph County, Ala., he was born Nov. 15, 1939, son of Jessie Herman 
and Mattie Daniel Brown.  He was employed with Ford Motor Company and was a 
member of College Park Christian Church.  Mr. Brown was an Army veteran.
   Survivors include his wife, Marijane Brown of Fayetteville; two sons, Lowell Dwayne 
Brown of Jacksonville, FL, and David Lee Brown of Fayette County, GA; a sister Ruth 
Baldwin of Roanoke; five brothers, Clarence Brown of Wedowee, Billy Brown of 
Leesburg, Mark Brown and Larry Brown of Roanoke, and Michael Brown of Franklin, 
GA; and three grandchildren.
   Memorials may be floral or donations can be made to Southwest Christian Hospice, 
7225 Lester Rd., Union City, GA 30291.
   Pallbearers were Richard Baldwin, Phillip Baldwin, Billy Worley, Kenny Arrington, Joey

OBITUARIES:

James A. Williams

   (WEDOWEE) James A. Williams, 63, of Wedowee died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at 
Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Services were Friday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, 
Wedowee, with the Rev. Joseph Hepburn officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Sarah Williams of Wedowee; four sons, James Harold 
Williams of Wedowee, Clarence Bernard Williams of Lineville, and Horace Lee Williams 
and Rev. Bruce Williams of Birmingham; a daughter, Sharon Machel Williams of Oxford; 
a sister, Alice Stewart of Birmingham; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  He 
was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Willie Lee Williams and the Rev. Estella 
Williams.
   Mr. Williams was the youngest of seven children, a native of Randolph County and a 
lifelong resident of Wedowee, where he worked both for the Town of Wedowee and 
Randolph Farmers Co-Op until becoming disabled.  He was a member of Union Chapel 
United Methodist Church.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Annice Hudson Burroughs

   (LAFAYETTE) Services for Annice Hudson Burroughs, 85, of LaFayette, formerly of 
Carrollton, GA, were Friday Dec 8, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. Clifford DeLee officiating.  Burial followed at Corinth Baptist 
Church Cemetery in Clay County.
   Mrs. Burroughs died Thursday, Dec. 7, at Bethany House Hospice in Auburn.
   A Carroll County, GA, native, Mrs. Burroughs was born July 9, 1915, daughter of 
Henry and Annie Patterson Hudson.  She had retired from Sewell Manufacturing 
Company and was preceded in death by her husband, Buren W. Burroughs.
   Survivors include her mother-in-law, Earlie Burroughs of Wedowee; sister-in-law, 
Mohee Foster of Wedowee; brother-in-law, Bobby Burroughs of Wadley; and several 
nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Carl Nelson Sr.

   (NEWELL) Services for Carl Nelson Sr., 94, or Newell, were Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, 
at 2 p.m. at Levens Baptist Church, with the Rev. Herman Mason, the Rev. Gordon 
Taylor and the Rev. Tony Morris officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Nelson died Thursday, Dec. 7, at Heritage Home in Roanoke.
   Mr. Nelson was a native of Randolph County, born Sept. 23, 1906, son of A. J. Nelson 
and Minnie Lee Norred Nelson.  He was a farmer and a member of Caver's Grove 
Congregational Christian Church.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Gladys M. 
Nelson.
   Mr. Nelson is survived by three daughters, Rue Dean Mason of Hampton, Ga., Laverne 
White of Conley, Ga., and Sybil Henderson of Woodland; two sons, Carl Nelson Jr. and 
Billy F. Nelson of Wedowee; four sisters, Bertha Lee McCain of Wedowee, Annie Mae 
Kerr of Huntsville, Mavis McCain of Newell, and Betty Jane Stewart of Bowdon, Ga.; 
one brother, Lonnie Ray Nelson of LaGrange, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; 35 great- 
grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Steve Butler, Jeff White, Barry Nelson, Danny Nelson, Mark Butler, 
Mike Butler, Jody Nelson, Andy Nelson, and Allen McManus.
   The family requests any memorial donations be made to Clay County Hospice.

Allen 'Bid' Ramsey

   (ROANOKE) Services for Allen "Bid" Ramsey, 71, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Kirby and 
Benny Satterwhite officiating.  Burial was at High Pine Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Ramsey died Thursday, Dec. 7, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A longtime resident of Roanoke, he was born in Hancock County, Tenn., on March 6, 
1929, son of Eugene and Edna Livesay Ramsey.  He was employed at Lanett Mills, was a 
veteran of the Korean War and was a member of High Pine Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Reba Ramsey of Roanoke; two daughters, Rita Royston and

Ina Hill Satterwhite

  (LANETT) Services for Ina Hill Satterwhite, 78, of Lanett, formerly of Rock Mills, were 
Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Jack 
Maxwell and Horace Harper officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Satterwhite died Saturday, Dec. 9, at Franklin Health Care.
   A Randolph County native and lifelong Rock Mills resident, Mrs. Satterwhite was born 
Dec. 31, 1921, daughter of Henry Oscar and Sally Emma Sheppard Hill.  She was a 
member of Rock Mills Community Holiness Church and had worked with Wehadkee Yarn 
Mills.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Satterwhite.
   Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Stagg of Lanett; five sons, Jerry Hill and Gerold 
Hill of Valley, Richard Satterwhite of LaGrange, Ga., Bradford Satterwhite of Franklin, 
Ga., and Harold Satterwhite of Valley; two sisters, Vena Holloway of Morrison 
Crossroads and Jennell Glass of Rock Mills; one brother, Leon Hill of Rock Mills; 22 
grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
   Grandsons served as pallbearers.

   (WOODLAND) Services for Walter E. Tanksley Jr., 68, of Woodland were at 2 p.m. 
Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Providence Baptist Church, with the Rev. Carolyn Hanner 
officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Tanksley died Saturday, Dec. 9, at Polk Medical Center in Cedartown, Ga.
   Mr. Tanksley was a native of Lumberton, Miss., born Oct. 16, 1932, son of Walter 
Tanksley Sr. and Elvie Elizabeth Bonds Tanksley.  He was employed with Trintex 
Manufacturing and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Rinice Henderson Tanksley of Woodland; a daughter, Rose 
Ixmaychun of Cedartown; two sisters, Joyce Henderson of Louisville, Ky., and Peggy Cox 
of Biloxi, Miss.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Jimmy Henderson, Loyce Henderson, Steve Butler, Jerry Carter, Ray 
Henderson and Jeffery Henderson.

Yvonne McClendon

   (ROANOKE) Memorial services for Yvonne McClendon, 59, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
Dec. 10, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Tim Whaley 
officiating.
   Mrs. McClendon died Sept. 20, 1995.
   She was a Randolph County native, born Aug. 19, 1936, daughter of Jeff and Pearl 
Traylor Gosdin.  She was a member of Union Baptist Church and had been employed with 
Handley Mills.
   Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Smith and Robbie Robinson, both of Roanoke; 
a granddaughter, Breanna Hester of Roanoke; and one sister, Clois Cummings of 
Wedowee.  She had a brother, Glenn Gosdin, who died in 1996.

Randy Traylor

   (ROANOKE) Randy Traylor, 45, of Roanoke died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at his 
residence.
   Services will be Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Riley Street, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. Gilbert E. Staples officiating.  Burial will be in Skyview Memorial 
Gardens Cemetery, Welch.
   Survivors include a sister, Barbara Brooks of Roanoke; three brothers, Tracy Traylor, 
Anthony Traylor and Ronnie Traylor of Roanoke; a great aunt, Rebecca Gardner of 
Lineville; a special uncle, Clifford Johnson of Roanoke; a special aunt, Johnnie Ridley of 
Roanoke; and two nephews.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before services.
   Mr. Traylor was born in Chambers County to the late Willie L. Traylor and the late 
Lucille Johnson Traylor.  He grew up in Roanoke where he joined First Baptist Church as 
a youngster.  He attended Randolph County Training School and Handley High School.  
He served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged on Dec. 7, 1974.  From 
1982 until he returned home to Randolph county, Mr. Traylor resided in Atlanta, where he 
worked in the construction industry.

   (LAFAYETTE) James Leonard Walters, 73, of LaFayette died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, 
at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services were Monday, Dec. 11, at 1 p.m. at Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette, with 
interment in LaFayette City Cemetery.  The Rev. Larry Hudson officiated.
   He is survived by his wife, JoElla Tease Walters of LaFayette; five children, Brad 
Bradfield and Leonard Lee Walters of LaFayette, James M. Walters of Bartlett, Tenn., 
Beverly Olson of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and Lisa Jo Rodgers of Navarre, Fla,; one 
brother, John T. Walters of Camp Hill; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Mr. Walters was born in Notasulga on April 11, 1927.  He was a U.S. Army veteran, a 
retired sawyer/millwright from the Cleveland Brothers Lumber Company in Wadley, and a 
Methodist.

Phillip Michael Williamson

   (TIFTON, Ga.) Services for Phillip Michael Williamson, 49, of Tifton, Ga., formerly of

Roanoke, with the Rev. Roger McClurg officiating.  Burial was in Rock Springs 
Congregational Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Williamson died suddenly on Dec. 7 at his residence in Tifton.
   He was born in Randolph County on Feb. 10, 1951, son of Bruce and Mildred Adams 
Williamson.  He was a manager with Food Lion Grocery and a member of Rock Springs 
Congregational Christian Church.
   Survivors include his mother, Mildred Little of Five Points; three sisters, Dianne Coker 
of Manchester, Ga., Peggy Coker of Dadeville and Becky Brown of Roanoke; and two 
brothers, Ronald Williamson of Lincoln and Melvin Williamson of Five Points.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Ozell Dewberry Wright, 79, of Wedowee were at 2 p.m.

   Mrs. Wright died Saturday, Dec. 9, at Wedowee Hospital.
   She was born in Clay County on March 7, 1921, daughter of Russell and Novela 
Thompson Dewberry.  She was a self-employed store operator and a member of Pine 
Grove Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William 
Wright.
   Survivors include two sons, Charles Ned Wright and Barry Neal Wright of Wedowee; a 
sister Mable Thomas of Birmingham; two brothers, Larcus Dewberry and Lawrence 
Dewberry of Lineville; and five grandchildren.

Melvin Blenton Hurst Sr.

   (WADLEY) Graveside services for Melvin Blenton Hurst Sr., 71, of Wadley were at 1

   Mr. Hurst died Sunday, Dec. 10 at Cusseta.
   He was born in Chambers County on Nov. 10, 1929, son of Ruben Denson and Maudie 
Langley Hurst.  He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, had been an aircraft 
mechanic at Maxwell Air Force Base, and was a Baptist.
   Survivors include three daughters, Susan Bassett of LaFayette, Cynthia Brewer of 
Opelika and Tina Burrows of Cusseta; two sons, Melvin Blenton Hurst Jr., of Houston, 
Texas, and Steven Kim Hurst of Destin, Fla.; three brothers, Leon Hurst of Knoxville, 
Tenn., Venson Hurst of LaFayette and Lynwood Hurst of Laurinburg, S.C.; 16 
grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

   (ROCK MILLS) Services for Glenda DeAnne Yarbrough, 56, of Rock Mills were

Baldwin officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Yarbrough died Saturday, Dec. 9, at her daughter's home.
   A Randolph county native, Mrs. Yarbrough was born Oct. 27, 1944, daughter of James 
Walter and Jessie Mae Scott Anglin.  She was a homemaker and a member of Rock Mills 
Church of God.  She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Hazel Barker; and a 
brother James Anglin.
   Survivors include a daughter, Shelia Baldwin of Roanoke; a son, Randy Yarbrough of 
Rock Mills; three grandchildren; one sister, Jodie Edmondson of Valley; and three 
brothers, Leon Anglin and Olin Anglin of Valley and Phillip Anglin of Goodwater.
   The family will be receiving friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home on Sunday, December 
10 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Monday, December 11, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Milton Hoyt Satterwhite

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Milton Hoyt Satterwhite, 81, of Wedowee were Sunday,

officiating.  Burial was in Wedowee Masonic City Cemetery.
   Mr. Satterwhite died Friday, Dec. 8, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   Mr. Satterwhite was a native of Randolph County, born June 10, 1919, son of Frank and 
Pattye Clegg Satterwhite.  He was a World War II veteran of the Army and was retired 
from Independent Life Insurance Company and was also a retired barber.  He was a 
member of Sawyer Lodge 93, F & AM, and First Baptist Church of Wedowee.
   Mr. Satterwhite is survived by his wife, Sarah Webb Satterwhite of Wedowee; two 
daughters, Joan Boswell of Royston, Ga., and Kathy S. Horsley of Wedowee; three sons, 
Milton Satterwhite Jr. and Webb Williams of Tampa, Fla., and Alan Satterwhite of 
Wedowee; a brother, John W. Satterwhite of Opelika; four grandchildren and nine 
great-grandchildren.

   (REDONDO BEACH, Calif.)  Mary Lou Hawkins Sabo, 80, died on Friday, Dec. 8,

   Mrs. Sabo was born Dec. 15, 1919, in Napoleon, Ala., but had been a South Bay 
resident for the past 61 years.
   Mrs. Sabo is survived by her sister, Rebecca Smith of Roanoke; two sons, William 
Hawkins of Norwalk, Calif., and Larry Hawkins of Little Rock, Calif.; two grandchildren 
and two great-grandchildren.
   Graveside services will be Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. at Pacific Crest Cemetery in 
Redondo Beach.

   Survivors include his mother, Christine Hatcher of Birmingham; two sons, Sylvester 
Tyrone Stegall of Roanoke and Robert Lee Hatcher III of Franklin, Ga.; a daughter, 
Renota Tanyal Hatcher of LaGrange, Ga.; three brothers, Willie B. Hatcher, John T. 
Hatcher and Tyrone Hatcher of Roanoke; three sisters, Shirley Kelly, Dorothy Ann

preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Hatcher.

   Mr. Hatcher was born and grew up in Roanoke, where he joined Mount Pisgah Baptist 
Church and later united with Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church.  He attended Randolph 
County Training School and worked for several years at Traylor Nursing Home and 
Randolph County Hospital.  He was also employed at Franklin Aluminum until failing 
health compelled him to retire early.

OBITUARIES:

Charles William Glenn Sr.

   (CAVE SPRING, Ga.) Charles William Glenn Sr., 82, of Cave Spring, Ga., died 
Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, following an extended illness.
   Mr. Glenn was born in Wedowee on Sept. 29, 1918, to William and Ellen Sterling 
Glenn.  He was one of eight children.  He graduated from Randolph County Training 
School and earned a B.S. and master's degree in mathematics and math education from 
Alabama State College.  He did graduate work on the Ph.D. level from Ball State 
University.  Mr. Glenn taught school for 35 years, primarily at Georgia School for the 
Deaf.
   The service was Sunday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Cave Spring United Methodist 
Church with the Rev. Patricia York officiating.  Burial was to be at a later date.

   Mrs. Riddle died Thursday, Dec. 14, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   A native of Cobb County, Ga., Mrs. Riddle was born July 4, 1928, daughter of Aaron 
and Cora Allene Bivins Bearden.  She formerly lived in Perry, Fla., Fitzgerald, Ga., and 
Douglasville, Ga.  She operated an antique shop in Austell, Ga., and was employed as a 
grocery cashier.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Jerry Bearden, and 
a sister, Lois Mosley.
   Survivors include her husband, Gilbert Riddle of Roanoke; three sons, Gilbert H. Riddle 
Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo., Aaron G. Riddle of Hogansville, Ga., and Randy Riddle of 
Roanoke; four sisters, Lovella Anthony of Douglasville, Clois Marian Harvy and Mary 
Ann Eubanks of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Margie Branham of Murphy, N.C.; a brother,

Jack Liles

   (LAFAYETTE) Jack Likes, 80, of LaFayette died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at his 
residence.

interment in LaFayette City Cemetery.  The Rev. Bill Hand and Mr. Jack Hill officiated.
   Survivors include his wife, Sarah Liles of LaFayette; two daughters, Judy LaFollette of 
Five Points and Jane Prewitt of Tuscaloosa; and two granddaughters.
   Mr. Liles was a native of Clay County, born Oct. 8, 1920.  He was a U.S. Army veteran 
of World War II and operated Jack Liles Grocery for 30 years and Jack Liles Realty for 20 
years.  He served as building and license inspector for the City of LaFayette and also 
served on the industrial board and zoning board.  He was a member of First Baptist 
Church of LaFayette.

   (WADLEY) Services for Ross Shockley Sessions, 82, of Wadley were Monday, Dec.

   Mr. Sessions died Saturday, Dec. 16, at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
   Mr. Sessions was a native of Chambers County, born Feb. 20, 1918, son of James 
Sessions and Minnie Shockley Sessions.  He was owner and operator of Sessions 
Appliance Sales and Service.
   Mr. Sessions is survived by his wife, Mary Storey Sessions of Wadley; a son, Jerry 
Sessions of Whitesburg, Ga.; a sister, Doris Weaver of Wedowee; two brothers, Bobby 
Sessions and Charles Sessions of Montgomery; five grandchildren and two great- 
grandchildren.

Linnie M. Butts

   (VALLEY) Linnie M. Butts, 70, of Valley died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at LaFayette 
Extended Care Facility in LaFayette.
   Mrs. Butts was born in Talladega on Feb. 3. 1930, daughter of the late Mae Medley 
Tumlin and the late Sidney Warren Tumlin.  She had retired from West Point Pepperell 
after working for 34 years in the Langdale Mill Weave Room.  She was a Baptist.
   Mrs. Butts is survived by her husband, George Butts, Jr.; a daughter, Betty Jo Todd of 
LaGrange, Ga.; a son, Billy Warren Butts of Newnan, Ga.; a brother, David Tumlin of 
Ashland; two sisters, Ruth Tidwell of Wadley and Minnie Meigs of West Point, Ga.; eight 
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

   Mrs. Wood died Monday, Dec. 18, at her residence following an extended illness.

Gore Parmer.  She had been employed at Handley Mills and was a United Methodist.

Mary Catherine Watson of Tyler, Texas; a brother, Johnny W. Higgins of Roanoke; and a

   Services for Mrs. Cofield will be Thursday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist 
Church, with the Rev. William Phillips officiating.  Interment will be in Rock Mills Baptist

Annie Lee Boyd

   (WEDOWEE) Annie Lee Boyd, 87, of Wedowee died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at West 
Georgia Hospice, LaGrange, Ga.
   Services will be at Antioch Baptist Church, Wedowee, on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. 
with the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.
   Surviving are three sons, James Boyd, Willie Ray Boyd and Johnny Ray Boyd, all of 
Wedowee; two daughters, Elizabeth Smith and Leola Boyd of Wedowee; 17 
grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
   Mrs. Boyd was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she served as a matron for 
many years.

Carroll Irvin King

   (WOODLAND) Services for Carroll Irvin King, 84, of Woodland will be Wednesday, 
Dec. 20, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Herren's Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leron Murphy 
and the Rev. Donald Spradlin officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. King died Monday, Dec. 18, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston.
   Mr. King was a native of Kenton, Ohio, born May 22, 1916, son of Irvin King and 
Evelyn Beach King.  He was a veteran of World War II.
   Mr. King is survived by his wife, Eris Taylor King of Woodland; a daughter, Paula Lima 
of Lithia Springs, Ga.; three sisters, Isabel Croy and Joan Cannon, both of Kenton and 
Martha Stump of Dunkirk, Ohio; and two grandsons.
   Pallbearers will be Ricky Spradlin, Tommy Herren, Alvin Key, Danny Taylor, Joe Mote 
and Gary McCormick.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee until one hour 
prior to services.  Mr. King will lie in state for one hour at the church.

Vernon F. Tobin

   (ROANOKE) Services for Vernon F. Tobin, 75, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, Dec. 
20, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Roanoke with Father 
Martin F. McGeough, Elder Barry Cordes and Brother Chris Webb officiating.  Burial will 
be at Concord Cemetery.
   Mr. Tobin died Sunday, Dec. 17, at his home.
   A Roanoke resident since 1951, Mr. Tobin was a Vinson County, N.D. native, born 
March 12, 1925, son of Joseph M. and Verna Mayme Winstead Tobin.  He was a World 
War II Army veteran and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.  Mr. 
Tobin had been with the Roanoke Fire Department since 1953 and served 24 years as fire 
chief.  He had served two terms on the Roanoke City Council and was a former member 
of the Roanoke Civil Defense.  He was self-employed at Tobin Electric Company.  Mr. 
Tobin was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Martin Tobin and Milton Tobin; 
and a sister, Marjorie Tobin.
   Survivors include his wife, Dovie Parrish Tobin of Roanoke; one daughter, Laurie Tobin 
Howe of Wadley; three sons, Parrish A. Tobin of Roanoke, Wayne M. Tobin of Rock 
Mills, and David Vernon Tobin of Dublin, Ga.; three sisters, Virginia Tobin and Rose 
Mary Schwab, both of Devils Lake, N.D., and Dorothy Deplazes of Cando, N.D.; and 
eight grandchildren.
   Members of the Roanoke Fire Department will serve as active and honorary pallbearers.

OBITUARIES:

Eula Maudie Browning

   (VALLEY) Eula Maudie Browning, 92, of Valley, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 19, at 
her residence.
   Miss Browning was a native of Chambers County, born March 21, 1908, daughter of 
the late Itura Covella Adamson Browning and the late Thomas Newton Browning.  She 
had retired from West Point Pepperell's Lanett Mill after 43 years of service.  At her 
retirement she worked in the cloth room.  Her hobby was gospel music, and she was a 
pianist for many years for Union Hill Church of God in Randolph County.  She was a 
member of Roanoke Church of God.
   Survivors include a nephew, R. J. Browning of Valley; a brother, Charlie Browning of 
Lanett; and several nieces and nephews.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 1 p.m. on 
Thursday, Dec. 21, with burial in Union Hill Cemetery in Randolph county.  The Rev. 
Donnie Browning and the Rev. Robert Huff officiated.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Mae Hodges

   (WADLEY) Services for Mae Hodges, 74, of Wadley were at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 
2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gordon Taylor and the Rev. Sonny 
McCormick officiating.  Burial was in Forrester's Chapel Cemetery.
   Mrs. Hodges died Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   A native of Clay County, she was born on May 18, 1926, daughter of William Reed and 
Lola Edmondson Tillis.  She was a homemaker and a member of Midway Full Gospel 
Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Harvey Hodges of Wadley; two sons, James E. Hodges 
of Wadley and Thomas F. Hodges of Roanoke; one daughter, Joyce Hodges Rowe of 
Roanoke; two brothers, Tommy Tillis of Wadley and Charlie Tillis of Hogansville, Ga.; 
10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.

John S. 'Jack' Sprouse

   (CENTRAL, S.C.) John S. "Jack" Sprouse, 75, widower of Frances Eakes Sprouse, 
died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Anderson Area Medical Center in Anderson, S.C.
   A native of Abbeville, S.C., he was a son of the late Ira Ernest and Ruby Butler 
Sprouse.  He was personnel administrator with Amoco Fabrics and Fibers, a 1949 
graduate of Furman University and a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.  He was a 
member of the board of directors of the Parents Club of Whitten Center in Clinton, S.C., a 
member of the Consumers Committee and participated in many other volunteer activities 
at the center.  He and his wife helped to establish the Randolph Association for Retarded 
Citizens (Learning Center) in Roanoke.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of 
Pendleton, S.C.
   Survivors include sons John Sprouse of Dunn, N.C. and Jim Sprouse of Woodstock, 
Ga.; daughters Susan Sprouse of LaFayette, Colo., and Connie Sprouse of Clinton; a 
brother, William B. Sprouse of Ware Shoals, S.C.; a sister, Betty Ware of Abbeville, S.C., 
four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by a brother, Ira E. 
Sprouse Jr.
   Services were at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Pendleton, with burial in the 
church cemetery.

Luther Grier   

   (ATLANTA) Luther Grier, 47, of Atlanta died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000.
   Services were Saturday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. William Phillips, pastor, officiating.  Burial was in Mount Pisgah 
Baptist Church Cemetery, Roanoke.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dathne Patrice Grier of Atlanta; a son, Sidney ReJean 
Burks of Cambridge, Mass.; a daughter, Ms. Icee Nichole Grier of Atlanta; his mother, 
Ms. Catherine Williams of Roanoke; his stepmother, Ms. Marie Reese of Atlanta; five 
brothers, Eddie Magby Williams of Atlanta, Ronald Williams of Monroeville, Penn., 
Michael Williams of Ellenwood, Ga., Donald Williams and Leonard Holliday of Augusta, 
Ga.; and seven sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Oliver of Roanoke, Ms. Janice Roper, Ms. Trevious 
Grier and Ms. Tiffany Reese of Atlanta, Ms. Betty Foster of Tuskegee, Ms. Rosalyn 
Brown and Mrs. Lisa O'Neal of LaGrange, Ga.  Mr. Grier was preceded in death by his 
father, Reuben Grier; and a brother, Robert Williams.
   A native of Roanoke, Mr. Grier was a life-long member of Saint Paul Baptist Church in 
the "Hill City" community where he grew up.  He attended Randolph County Training 
School in Roanoke and graduated from Handley High School.  He was active in sports, on 
the varsity football teams at RCTS and Handley.  Luther was one of the most popular 
members of the graduating class of 1971.  He attended Alabama State University in 
Montgomery and West Georgia College in Carrollton, Ga.  He was employed by the City 
of Atlanta for more than 20 years.

Service, Roanoke.

Annie Mae Sherman

   (LAFAYETTE) Services for Annie Mae Sherman of LaFayette were Thursday, Dec. 21, 
2000, at 4 p.m. at Jeff Jones Funeral Home with the Revs. Bill Hand and Charles Whitson 
officiating.  Burial was at LaFayette City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Sherman died Thursday, Dec. 21, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A native of Chambers County, Mrs. Sherman was a member of First Baptist Church of 
LaFayette, where she was treasurer of Women's Missionary Union for 21 years and served 
in the Mission in Action organization at the church for 21 years.  She was also a member 
of the Inter Se Club in Wadley.
   She is survived by two daughters, Tookie Langley and Jackie Harding of LaFayette; two 
grandsons and two great-granddaughters.

Louise Elizabeth Cook Carden

   (ROANOKE) Services for Louise Elizabeth Cook Carden, 80, of Roanoke were 
Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at 3 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church, with the Rev. Floyd 
Carmack, the Rev. Maynard McGinty and Dr. Frank McCook officiating.  Burial was in 
the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mrs. Carden died Saturday, Dec. 23, at her residence.
   A native of Troup County, Ga., she was born Sept. 3, 1920, daughter of Oscar Miller 
and Ruth Adalyn Emory Cook.  She was a homemaker and a member of Antioch Christian 
Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Ruth Cook; a son, Joe T. 
Carden Jr.; and two brothers, Oscar Emory Cook and Paul Miller Cook.
   Survivors include her husband, Tom Carden of Roanoke; two daughters, Jean Carden 
Henry of Lanett and Sandra Carden Densmore of Roanoke; a son, Stephen Mark Carden 
of Roanoke; and two grandsons.
   Memorial donations can be made to Antioch Christian Church.
   Pallbearers were Bob Stewart, James Williams, Ellis Brown, Mike Coker, David 
Meddick and Ben Beaird.

Lindy Ray Smith

   (MIAMI, Fla.) Services for Lindy Ray Smith, 66, of Miami, Fla., formerly of Randolph 
County, will be Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, with the 
Revs. David Daniel and Tony Morris officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mr. Smith died Saturday, Dec. 23, at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
   A native of Randolph County, he was born Sept. 15, 1934, son of Dennis Morris Smith 
and Mary Alice Thompson Smith.  He was employed as an adult treatment administrator 
with Keyho Systems Inc. and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
   Survivors include two daughters, Linda Lee Humphrey and Cindy Baliton, both of Ft. 
Pierce, Fla.; a son, Tim Smith of Ft. Pierce; three brothers, R. G. Prescott of Woodland, 
W. L. Smith of Hernando, Miss., and Larry D. Smith of Homestead, Fla.; six 
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee on Wednesday, 
Dec. 27, from 4 until 7 p.m.  Mr. Smith will lie in state at the church for one hour 
beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
   Pallbearers will be Dale Dye, Bud Daniel, Chuck Smith, L. C. Henderson, Nick Smith 
and Steve Cantrell.

Laverne Halsey Burdette

   (ROANOKE) Services for Laverne Halsey Burdette, 89, of Roanoke, formerly of 
Wadley, will be Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, 
with the Revs. Cecil Halsey and Scott Hanna officiating.  Burial will follow at New Hope 
Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Burdette died Monday, Dec. 25, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Burdette was born Oct. 2, 1911, daughter of Henry 
Allen Halsey and Eula Mae Clack Halsey.  She was a homemaker and a member of New 
Hope Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Denson 
Burdette.
   Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Pool of Roanoke; two step-daughters, June Pannell 
of Dahlonega, Ga., and Phyllis DeVere of Waco, Texas; two sisters, Annie H. 
McCollough of Valley and Pauline H. Wortham of Surrency, Ga.; two brothers, James 
Halsey and Ray Halsey of Roanoke; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Lonnie Short, Scott Woody, Jerry Mapp, Mick McGraw, Richard 
Halsey and Mark Halsey.

Bryce Wilfred Woody

   (ROANOKE) Services for Bryce Wilfred Woody, 84, of Roanoke were Sunday, Dec. 
24, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Yancey Sanders, Jim Dykes 
and Chris Webb officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Woody died Friday, Dec. 22, at Traylor Nursing Home.
   A lifelong resident of this area, Mr. Woody was born in Chambers County on Nov. 4, 
1916, son of Bryce Glanton Woody and Addie Kate Rearden Woody.  He was a member 
of Bethel Baptist since the 1950s and had worked as a salesman with Raleigh Products.  
He was preceded in death by two wives, Florence Holderfield Woody and Mary Benefield 
Woody and two great-grandchildren, Paige Woody and Matthew Woody.
   Survivors include four sons, David B. Woody of LaGrange, Ga., Larry W. Woody of 
Roanoke, Thom B. Perry of Birmingham and Dr. Benny J. Woody of Franklin, Tenn.; one 
sister, Frances Lamb; one brother, Dewey Wooddy of LaFayette; nine grand-children and 
nine great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Harold Kendrick, Tim Woody, Steve Woody, Les Woody, Donald 
Brown and Jeff Woody.  Honorary pallbearers were Buster Kitchens, Cecil Crenshaw, 
Scott Woody, Glenn Storey, Doyle Shelnutt and Mack Holderfield.

Lillian Shehane

   (VALLEY) Services for Lillian Shehane, 80, of Valley were Saturday, Dec. 23, at 2 
p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Danny 
Spear officiating.  Burial was in Fairfax Cemetery.
   Mrs. Shehane died Thursday, Dec. 21, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Shehane was born Dec. 9, 1920, the daughter of the 
late Mary Mayo Martin and William Henry Martin.  She had retired from West Point 
Pepperell's Fairfax Mill, where she was a towel hemmer.  She had more than 50 years of 
service with the company and was a member of the West Point Pepperell 50 Year Club.  
She was active in the Valley Senior Citizens and had worked as a volunteer at George H. 
Lanier Memorial Hospital for 20 years.  She was a member of Fairfax First Christian 
Church.
   Survivors include a sister, Margaret Tucker of Valley, and a niece, Mary Ann Walters of 
Valley.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Ernest Pool

   (WEDOWEE) Services for the Rev. Ernest Pool, 88, of Wedowee were Monday, Dec. 
25, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Teamon Holloway and the 
Rev. Janson Key officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Rev. Pool died Saturday, Dec. 23, at Lineville Nursing Facility.
   Rev. Pool was a native of Randolph County, born April 9, 1912, son of Martin Luther 
Pool and Caldonia Holloway Pool.  He had been a security guard, general store operator 
and operator of a ferry on the Tallapoosa River.  Rev. Pool served Mt. Grove Baptist 
Church and Union Hill Baptist Church as pastor, and had preached many revival services.  
He was preceded in death by his wife Lillie Pate Pool, and a son, Billy Pool.
   Rev. Pool is survived by three daughters, Katherine Bolt, Florence P. Mitchell and 
Margie P. Gray, all of Wedowee; four brothers, Artemas Pool, R. V. Pool and Chester 
Pool of Wedowee and C. L. Pool of Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 
and seven great-great-grandchildren.
   Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Mary Frances Parmer

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mary Frances Parmer, 65, of Roanoke, formerly of Newnan, 
Ga., will be Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at 2 p.m. at El-Bethel Baptist Church, with the 
Rev. Stanley Daniel officiating.  Burial will follow at Bethel East Baptist Church 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Parmer died Saturday, Dec. 23, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A Heard County, Ga. native, Mrs. Parmer was born June 19, 1935, daughter of J. I. 
Beck Jr. and Cassie Dye Beck.  She was a homemaker and attended El-Bethel Baptist 
Church.
   Survivors include her husband, W. D. Parmer of Roanoke; one daughter, Melanie Kay 
of Milledgeville, Ga.; a son, Anthony W. Parmer of Griffin, Ga.; two sisters, Mavis Pace 
of Smyrna, Ga., and Margie Culpepper of Newnan, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
   Mrs. Parmer will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services.

Tharon Chasteen Hicks

   (ROCK MILLS) Services for Mrs. Tharon Chasteen Hicks, 61, of Rock Mills were 
Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Wendell 
Rush officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Hicks died Sunday, Dec. 24, at her home.
   A native and lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Hicks was born April 18, 1939, 
daughter of Hobson and Era Foster Chasteen.  She had worked as a seamstress.  Mrs. 
Hicks was preceded in death by her husband, Glover "Bud" Hicks, and a son, Michael 
Thomas Hicks.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mimi Hicks Burkholder of Hamilton, Ga.; and a sister, 
Wenona Smith of Rock Mills.
   Pallbearers were Ken Hicks, Ken Morrison, Adam Slay, Tony Moore, Kerry Burks and 
Wallace Bennett.
