OBITUARIES:

Marvin Bowd Weathers

     (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Marvin Bowd Weathers, 73, of Roanoke will be 
held Wednesday, May 4, 1994, at 1 p.m. from High Pine Baptist Church cemetery, with 
Revs. Albert Holcombe and Hubert Worley officiating.
     Mr. Weathers died Tuesday, May 3, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
     A former resident of Boaz, Mr. Weathers was born in Oakfield, Ga., son of Grover 
Cleveland and Shanon [sic] Stitt Weathers. He was an army veteran of World War II and 
a member of High Pine Baptist Church. Mr. Weathers owned and operated B & W Auto 
Parts store for many years.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Benefield Weathers of Roanoke; a son, Tony 
Weathers of Roanoke; two grandsons, Aaron Weathers and Evan Weathers of Roanoke; 
two sisters, Mrs. Louise Sudduth of Roanoke and Mrs. Grace Howard of Macon, Ga.; and 
a brother, Grover Weathers, Jr., of LaGrange.
     The family requests no flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to either 
the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association or Chattahoochee 
Hospice.
     Pallbearers will be Joe Weathers, Buck Weathers, Mike Weathers, Ben Murr, Holly 
Murr and Wayne Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Allen Ramsey, Benny Satterwhite, 
Burl Fetner, Gilbert Moore, Loyd Bolt and I. B. Moore.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.

John Thene

     (WADLEY) Funeral services for John Thene, 79, of Wadley were Thursday, April 28, 
1994, at 3 p.m. from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Hulet Prince officiating. 
Burial was at the adjoining cemetery.
     Mr. Thene died Wednesday, April 27, at Randolph County Hospital.
     A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Thene was born April 14, 
1915. He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist 
Church. He had worked at Handley Mills.
     He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eula Staples Thene of Wadley, and a sister, Mrs. 
Sylvia Herren of Roanoke.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

James O. Mitchum

     (HUNTSVILLE) James O. Mitchum, 61, of Huntsville died Monday, April 25, 1994, 
in Huntsville. The funeral was on Tuesday, April 26, at First Baptist Church of Huntsville, 
with burial in Huntsville Memory Gardens.
     Mr. Mitchum, a native of Roanoke who had lived in Huntsville since 1960, was retired 
from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He was a member of First 
Baptist Church of Huntsville, was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was past president 
of the Pacesetters Lions Club.
     Survivors include his wife, Velma M. Mitchum of Huntsville; one son, Richard Allen 
Mitchum of Virginia Beach, Va.; one daughter, Cathy Lynn Williams of Madison; one 
brother, William A. Mitchum, Jr. of Elba; and four grandchildren.
     Those who wish may make contributions to the First Baptist Church Seminary 
Scholarship Fund, 600 Governors Drive, Huntsville 35801 or to the American Cancer 
Society.
     Spry Funeral Home of Huntsville was in charge of arrangements.

Benjamin May

     (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Benjamin (Bennie) May, 68, of LaGrange, Ga., died Thursday, 
April 28, 1994, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after a lengthy illness.
     He was born in Heard County, Ga., on December 17, 1925, son of the late J. B. and 
Myrtie Lee Thomaston May. He retired from the Kex Plant of Milliken & Company after 
40 years of service. He lived in LaGrange since 1942. Mr. May was a member of Park 
Avenue Church of Christ, LaGrange, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
     Funeral services were at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, on Saturday, April 
30, with ministers Elmer M. McCoy, Jr., Donald C. Murrell, and Billy Irby officiating. 
Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange.
     Surviving are Mr. May's wife, Mrs. Mary May of LaGrange; one daughter, Becky 
Mitchell of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, Dwayne May of Montgomery and LaVaughn May 
of Opelika; one brother, Harold May of LaGrange; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ellen May of 
Franklin, Ga.; a step-sister, Mrs. Virginia Freeman of Mableton, Ga.; eight grandchildren 
and several nieces and nephews.
     Those desiring may contribute to the Troup County Unit of The American Cancer 
Society in memory of Mr. May.
     Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home of LaGrange was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Gene Smith

     (PINE HILL) Dorothy Gene Smith, 65, of the Pine Hill community (Route 1, Graham) 
died Sunday, May 1, 1994, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
     Mrs. Smith was born in Randolph County July 31, 1928, the daughter of the late Jody 
W. and Louise Pearl McManus McCollough. Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of this 
area, a member of Bowdon Church of Christ and a homemaker.
     She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd J. Smith, in November 1989.
     Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Smith of Pine Hill; two brothers, Lance 
McCollough of Graham and Joe B. McCollough, Sr. of Montgomery; and three sisters, 
Julia McCollough of Graham, and Wahneta McCollough and Dean McCollough of 
Montgomery.
     Funeral services were Tuesday, May 3, at 3 p.m. (Ga. Time) at Bowdon Church of 
Christ, with Minister David Cheek officiating. Interment services were in the Pine Hill 
Church of Christ Cemetery near Newell.
     Rainwater-West Funeral Home of Bowdon, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Wood McClendon

     (STOCKBRIDGE, Ga.) Robert Wood (Bobby) McClendon of Stockbridge, Ga., 
a native of Roanoke, died Saturday, April 30, 1994, after an extended illness from a brain 
tumor.
     Mr. McClendon was retired from Consolidated Freightways as a city driver.
     Mr. McClendon is survived by his wife, Mrs. Linda Moye McClendon; two sons, Tim 
McClendon and Scott McClendon, both of Roanoke; a daughter, Cynthia McClendon of 
Stockbridge; his mother, Velma McClendon of Roanoke; a brother, Norman McClendon 
of Roanoke; a sister, Barbara Wesson of Standing Rock; a grandson, Kevin McClendon of 
Roanoke; three aunts, one uncle, and several nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, May 2, from Rainer Chapel[,] Stockbridge, 
with Rev. Glenn Anderson officiating. Interment was in Fairview Memorial Gardens. 
Drivers from Consolidated Freightways served as pallbearers.

OBITUARIES:

Dora Beckworth

     (LAFAYETTE) Dora Beckworth, 69, of LaFayette died at East Alabama Medical 
Center in Opelika on Thursday, May 5, 1994.
     Funeral services for Mrs. Beckworth were at LaFayette Church of Christ at 2 p.m. on 
Saturday, May 7, with interment in LaFayette Cemetery. Minister Gerald Romine 
officiated.
     Survivors include her husband, Dan Beckworth of LaFayette; one sister, Nora 
Lawhorn of Palatka, Fla.; four brothers, Bryant Wilson, Lamon Wilson, Kayger Wilson 
and Major Wilson, all of Woodland; and her mother, Estelle Wilson of Woodland.
     Mrs. Beckworth was born in Randolph County on Nov. 10, 1994 [sic - 1924]. She was 
retired from the old Playtex sewing plant as a supervisor after 23 years of service and was 
a member of LaFayette Church of Christ.
     Sanders Funeral Home of LaFayette was in charge of arrangements.

Lou Edna Cunningham

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Lou Edna Cunningham, 82, of Route 3, Roanoke 
were Thursday, May 5, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Bro. 
Gerald Romine and Bro. Bill Prince Jr. officiating. Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery, 
Roanoke.
     Mrs. Cunningham died Wednesday, May 4, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
     A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Cunningham was born 
Sept. 9, 1911, daughter of Joe W. and Lillian Harmon Kirby. She was a housewife and 
a member of Taylor's Cross Roads Church of Christ.
     Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Edna Sue Swann of Roanoke; a son, Thomas W. 
Cunningham of Roanoke; a sister, Miss Lucy Mae Kirby of LaGrange; and three 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were Barrett Shelnutt, Braxton Kirby, Dewel Knowles, Gary Tibbs, Tim 
Swann and Jeff Swann.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lora Stewart Dobson

     (WEDOWEE) Lora Stewart Dobson, 75, of Wedowee, died Sunday, May 8, 1994, at 
her residence after an extended illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday May 10, at the First United Methodist Church 
of Wedowee, with Dr. Harris Hand officiating. Burial was in the Wedowee City Cemetery.
     Mrs. Dobson is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Jewell W. Harwell of Birmingham, Mrs. 
Vicie Jordan of Roanoke and Mrs. Wilma Nelson of LaGrange, Ga.; two brothers, 
Winston Stewart of Wedowee and Jack Stewart of Auburn; and a host of nieces and 
nephews.
     Pallbearers were nephews.
     Mrs. Dobson was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was retired 
as a seamstress with Palm Beach Company and was a member of the Day Circle of 
Wedowee, the Bible study group of the First United Methodist Church of Wedowee. She 
was preceded in death by her husband, A. B. Dobson.
     Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Calvin Hudson

     (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Robert Calvin Hudson, 77, of Roanoke, formerly 
of Rock Mills, were Sunday, May 8, 1994, from Randolph Memory Gardens, with Rev. 
Don Quick officiating.
     Mr. Hudson died Friday, May 6, at the V.A. Medical Center in Tuskegee.
     A Chambers County native, Mr. Hudson was born June 29, 1916, son of Robert 
McNeil and Parrie Ella Patterson Hudson. He was a navy veteran of World War II and 
had worked as a machinist with Sims Metal Works.
     Survivors include a grandson, Randy Hudson of Five Points; a great-grandson, Jared 
Hudson, also of Five Points; and a brother, Charlie Herbert Hudson of Hickory Flat.
     Pallbearers will be [sic - was] Rayford Johnson, Kerry Burks, Lewis Dykes, Jimmy 
Strickland, Barney Strickland and Ricky Strickland.

Lurline M. Payne

     (WEDOWEE) Lurline M. Payne, 90, of Wedowee died Monday, May 9, 1994, in 
Monroeville, Ala., after an extended illness.
     Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at First Baptist Church of 
Wedowee, with Revs. Ken Fuller and John Duncan officiating. Burial will be in Wedowee 
City Cemetery.
     Mrs. Payne is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Edith McMillon of Monroeville, one 
granddaughter, Mrs. Barbara Williams of Citronelle, and one grandson, Grover Barry 
Payne of Wedowee.
     Pallbearers will be Shorty Petty, Vernon Stephens, Lamar Payne, Mackey Walston, 
Jerry Craft and Paul Williams.
     Mrs. Payne was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was a 
homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Wedowee, the Kathleen Mallory 
Circle, the Wedowee Garden Club and the Joy Knapp Sunday School Class.
     Mrs. Payne will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Raymon O'Neal Rollins

     (BOWDON, Ga.) Raymon O'Neal Guinea Rollins, 71, of Bowdon died Wednesday, 
May 4, 1994, at Bowdon Area Hospital.
     Mr. Rollins was born in Troup County, Ga., Feb. 28, 1923, son of the late James 
Benjamin and Jimmie Lee Pope Rollins, Guinea was a lifelong resident of this area, a 
Bowdon merchant for 32 years as owner of Five Star Mobile Homes, Inc., and previously 
operated Rollins Poultry Farms in the Ephesus community.
     He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine Lovvorn Rollins in 1966, 
daughter Beverly Ann Rollins, sister Louise Hammond, and brothers Gordon Rollins and 
P. D. Jake Rollins.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jacqueline Bailey Rollins of Bowdon; three children, 
Jerry (and Karen) Rollins, Patty (and Larry) Akins and Benjamin Rollins, all of Bowdon; 
seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a brother, J. B. Rollins of 
Mableton, Ga.
     Funeral services were Friday, May 6, at 2 p.m. from the Rainwater-West Funeral 
Home Chapel, with Rev. W. M. Wiggins and Dr. Warren Moorhead officiating. Music 
was by Frank Richardson and Cliff Wiggins, with Rev. Terry Lowry as pianist.
     Pallbearers were Barry Hammond, Baxter Hammond, Mike Rollins, Pep Rollins, Steve 
Lovvorn, Jim Lovvorn, Harold Randy Lovvorn and Mike Haynes. Five Star Mobile Home 
employees served as honorary pallbearers.
     Interment services followed in the Corinth Baptist Church cemetery, with Rev. Dennis 
Rollins in charge of graveside services.
     Rainwater-West Funeral Home, Bowdon, was in charge of arrangements.

Mavis L. Williams

     (ANNISTON) Mavis L. Williams, 75, of Anniston, formerly of Randolph County, died 
Saturday, May 7, 1994, at Colonial Pines Nursing Home, Oxford, after an extended 
illness.
     Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, May 9 at Union Hill Congregational 
Methodist Church, with Rev. Felix New and Rev. Dorsey White officiating. Burial was in 
the adjoining cemetery.
     Mrs. Williams is survived by one son, Lloyd New of Wedowee; her father, J. J. New of 
Wedowee; three brothers; O'Neal New of Anniston, Johnny New of Detroit, Mich., and 
Doyle New of Wedowee; four sisters, Ms. Lillian New of Wedowee, Mrs. Pauline Logan 
of Pell City, Mrs. Ann Vaughn of Anniston and Mrs. Willene Horn of Connerville, Ind.; 
and three grandsons and one great-grandchild.
     Pallbearers were Millard Mize, John Graham, Lincoln Key, Earnest Lipham, Harvey 
Mize and Thelma Kitchens.
     Mrs. Williams was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and a member of Union 
Hill Congregational Methodist Church.

Mildred E. Wood

     (VALLEY) Mildred E. Wood, 78, of Valley died Saturday, May 14, 1994 at her 
residence.
     Mrs. Wood was a native of Roanoke, born January 24, 1916. She was a retired 
employee of West Point Pepperell's Fairfax Mill and a member of Langdale 
Congregational Christian Church.
     Mrs. Wood is survived by two sons, Sidney Wood and Phillip Wood of Valley; four 
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
     Funeral services were at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
4 p.m. on Monday, May 16, with burial in Fairfax Cemetery. Rev. Herb Young and Rev. 
John Schofield officiated.
     Memorial contributions may be made to the Langdale Congregational Christian Church 
Youth Fund in her memory.
     Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel of Valley was in charge of 
arrangements.

Dock Philpott

     (WEDOWEE) Dock Philpott, 85, of Wedowee, died May 7, 1994, at Wedowee 
Hospital.
     Mr. Philpott was born July 28, 1908, son of Lent and Mary Bell Philpott.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bervenia Philpott of Wedowee; seven step-children, 
Mrs. Elvira Foster, Mrs. Sandra Faye Puffman, Mrs. Joanne Yearby, Ms. Angela 
Woodgett and Mrs. Gwen Thomas of Chattanooga, Tenn., Stanley Woodgett of Bremen, 
Ga., and Christopher Woodgett of Wedowee; one sister, Mrs. Jeneva Wiles of Pittsburgh, 
Pa.; and 17 grandchildren.
     Services for Mr. Philpott were May 13, at 2:30 p.m. from Pine Flat Primitive Baptist 
Church, with Elder Thomas Knight, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church 
cemetery.
     Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Jerry L. Stephens

     (GRAHAM) Jerry L. Stephens, 51, of Rt. 1, Graham, died Sunday, May 15, 1994, at 
his residence.
     Funeral services will be at Bethena United Methodist Church, Graham, on Thursday, 
May 19 at 1 p.m., with Rev. J. Cooper and Rev. R. L. Smith officiating. Interment will be 
in Bethena Cemetery.
     Surviving are three sons, Craig Stephens, Terry Stephens, and Marrick Stephens of 
Bowdon, Ga.; one daughter, Angele Stephens of Bowdon; his mother, Mrs. Mattie 
Stephens of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Simmons of Anniston and Mrs. Lizzie 
Wyatt of Graham; and four grandchildren.
     Mr. Stephens was a member of Bethena United Methodist Church of Graham. He was 
born in Randolph County on February 14, 1943.
     Vines Funeral Home of LaFayette was in charge of arrangements.

Johnnye Tate

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for John Effie M. Johnnye Tate, 79, of Roanoke will 
be Thursday, May 19, 1994, at 2 p.m. from First United Methodist Church of Roanoke, 
with Rev. Milton Booth officiating. Entombment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
     Mrs. Tate died Tuesday, May 17, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
     A long-time resident of Roanoke, Mrs. Tate was a native of Birmingham, born May 9, 
1915, daughter of Archer Russell and Susie Horton Gilmore. She had retired as a teacher 
with Roanoke City Schools and owned and operated McGilvray's for many years, 
beginning in 1945. An active member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church, she 
taught the Christian Home Sunday School Class and led youth Bible studies. Mrs. Tate 
was a member of the Literary Club and the Roanoke Garden Club.
     Survivors include her husband, Dr. John Tate of Roanoke; a sister, Mrs. Claude Tuck 
of Winder, Ga.; and two nieces, Precilla Kelly of Niceville, Fla., and Elizabeth Thompson 
of Houston, Tex.
     The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. 
The body will lie in state at the church for one hour, beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
     Pallbearers will be Adam Slay, John B. Tate III, Timothy F. Tate, Philip A. Tate, Paul 
A. Tate, Curtis Slay, Stephen C. Hundley and Earl McGilvray. Honorary pallbearers will 
be members of the Christian Home Sunday School Class, members of the Philathea 
Sunday School Class and former employees of McGilvray's.
     In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to either First 
United Methodist Church or Annie Awbrey Library.

Lula Vera Anglin

     (ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for Lula Vera Anglin, 77, of Rock Mills, will be 
Wednesday, May 18, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Gary 
Baugh officiating. Burial will follow at Rock Mills Cemetery.
     Mrs. Anglin died Tuesday, May 17, at Roanoke Heritage Home for the Elderly.
     A Randolph County native, Mrs. Anglin was born Sept. 16, 1916, daughter of John 
Will and Lucindy Sheppard. She had worked as a spinner with Wehadkee Yarn Mills.
     Survivors include a son, James Anglin of College Park, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie 
Norred and Mrs. Mozell Burks of Rock Mills; 13 grandchildren and 17 great- 
grandchildren.
     The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home until the time of the service.

John Lewis Rowland

     (ROANOKE) John Lewis Rowland, 27, of 326 Strong St., Roanoke, died Friday, May 
13, 1994, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
     Mr. Rowland was a member of Pure Holiness Church of God, Elder Greathouse 
pastor.
     Survivors include his mother, Lela Mae Rowland of Roanoke; three brothers, Malcolm 
Earnest Rowland, Tony Fitzgerald Rowland and Roddy James Rowland, all of Roanoke; 
two grandmothers, Mrs. Beatrice Rowland and Mrs. Lucille Magby, both of Roanoke; 
eight uncles, Robert Hill Jr. of College Park, Ga., Calvin Rowland Jr. of Birmingham, 
Samuel Rowland of Valdosta, Ga., and Charlie Rowland, Stanley Rowland, Thomas 
Rowland Sr., Kenneth Rowland and Wayne Rowland, all of Roanoke; four aunts, Miss 
Cleonia Rowland, Miss Terasa Rowland, Miss Evelyn Rowland and Miss Rhonda 
Rowland, all of Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Jo Rowland; and three nephews, 
Malcolm Christopher Rowland, Terrence Maurice Rowland and Quinton Montel 
Rowland.
     Services for Mr. Rowland will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at East Roanoke 
Church of God, with Bishop Wade Wright officiating. Interment will be in Skyview 
Memorial Garden in Welch. Friends will serve as pallbearers.
     Arrangements are by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Bertha Brumbeloe DeLoach

     (BIRMINGHAM) Graveside services for Bertha Brumbeloe DeLoach, 89, of 
Birmingham, formerly of Roanoke, will be Wednesday, May 18, 1994, at 2 p.m. from 
Randolph Memory Gardens, with Dr. Douglas Turner officiating.
     Mrs. DeLoach died Monday, May 16, at Trussville Health Care Center in Trussville.
     A native of Roanoke, Mrs. DeLoach was born Nov. 28, 1904, daughter of Robert Lee 
and Vernia Colon Hornsby DeLoach. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist 
Church of Roanoke. Her husband, James Theo DeLoach, preceded her in death.
     Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ann McClendon of Anderson, S.C., and Mrs. 
Margaret Donaldson of Birmingham, and six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
     Family members will be receiving friends at the funeral home until the time of the 
service on Wednesday. They suggest memorial contributions to First Baptist Church of 
Roanoke in lieu of flowers.

OBITUARIES:

Napoleon Bonapart Green

     (WOODLAND) Napoleon Bonapart Green, 70, of Rt. 2, Woodland, died Tuesday, 
May 17, 1994, in Wedowee Hospital.
     He was born in Randolph County on Nov. 23, 1923, son of the late William Henry 
Grady and Augusta A. Sears Green. Mr. Green was a lifelong resident of this area, a 
member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church and a farmer.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Cordie Bell Robinson Green of Woodland; one son, 
John Sanders of Tallapoosa, Ga.; one daughter, Mrs. Linda Ramirez of Pinson; four 
grandsons; one brother, Clifford Green of Napoleon; three sister, Mrs. Catherine Morgan 
of Roanoke, Mrs. Jeanette Prince of Woodland and Mrs. Lillie Shaw of Macon, Ga.; and 
nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services were Thursday, May 19, at 3 p.m. from Bear Creek United Methodist 
Church, with Rev. James Harper and Rev. Gary Henderson officiating. Music was 
provided by the Prince Family. Interment was in the church cemetery.
     Rainwater-West Funeral Home, Bowdon, was in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd Thomas Yates

     (BIRMINGHAM) Lloyd Thomas Yates, 69, of Birmingham died Wednesday, May 18, 
1994, at his residence following a brief illness.
     Mr. Yates was born in Randolph County on Sept. 9, 1924, son of the late Lloyd M. 
and Mary Thomason Yates. Mr. Yates had been a resident of Birmingham for 48 years 
and was a retired truck driver for Clark Brothers Transportation Inc., Birmingham.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ann Morris Yates of Birmingham; three daughters, 
Mrs. Gayle Snyder of New Brockton, Mrs. Donna Taylor of Opp and Mrs. Linda Baker of 
Tullahoma, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; three brothers, Ernest Haynes Yates and Kenneth 
Eugene Yates of Graham and Sydney Curtis Yates of Carrollton, Ga.; and one sister, Mrs. 
Kathleen Langley of Bremen, Ga.
     Funeral services were Friday, May 20, at 2 p.m. CDT from Rainwater-West Funeral 
Home Chapel, with Rev. W. M. Wiggins officiating. Pallbearers were Wilford Pullen, Ray 
Baughn, Howard Jones, John Yates, Mack McManus and Jackie (Jack) Shelton. Interment 
services were in the Goldridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
     Rainwater-West Funeral Home, Bowdon, was in charge of arrangements.

James Samuel Adams

     (ASHLAND) Funeral services for James Samuel Adams Jr., 39, of Ashland were 
Tuesday, May 3, 1994, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland, with the 
Rev. Bill Parker officiating. Burial was in Ashland City Cemetery.
     Mr. Adams died Sunday, May 1, at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in 
Birmingham. He was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County. He was a stockholder 
in Southland Manufacturing Company in Ashland and a member of First United Methodist 
Church of Ashland.
     He is survived by his wife, Donna J. Adams of Ashland; mother, Kathryn Adams of 
Ashland; two nephews, Logan and Erik Johnson of Ashland.
     Pallbearers were Rodney Saxon, Jeff Sparks, Rick Whatley, Billy Walker, Byran 
Birdsall and Mike Howard.
     Benefield Funeral Home of Ashland was in charge of arrangements.

Emma Dora Paige

     (ROANOKE) Emma Dora Paige, 75, of Roanoke died Saturday morning, May 21, 
1994, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, following a brief illness.
     Funeral services for Mrs. Paige will be Wednesday, May 25, at 3 p.m. at Rehope 
Baptist Church, Five Points, with Rev. H. L. Jones officiating. Burial will be in the 
adjoining cemetery.
     Mrs. Paige was a native of the Rehope community of Chambers County. She retired in 
the early 1980s after 20 years of loyal service as a nurse's aide at Traylor Nursing Home 
in Roanoke. She had been a member of Rehpe [sic] Baptist Church all of her life. She was 
preceded in death by two of her three children.
     Survivors include her husband, Leon Paige of LaGrange; one son, Stanley Paige of 
Tallahassee, Fla.; three grandsons, Fredrick Stegall and Phillip Parker of Roanoke and 
Brian Brooks of Tallahassee; two granddaughters, Cassandra Stegall and Robin Stegall of 
Roanoke; two great-grandchildren, Kierra Nichole Caldwell and Breanna Lashay Stegall 
of Roanoke; and a close and devoted friend, Mrs. Ethel Worthy of Roanoke.
     Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.

Carver Debs Griffin

     (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Carver Debs Griffin, 72, of Columbus, formerly of Randolph 
County, Ala., died Monday May 23, 1994 at St. Francis Hospital.
     The graveside funeral will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at Parkhill Cemetery, 
according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus.
     Mr. Griffin was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Shelby County, Ala., son of Lon and Myrtle 
Gazzaway Griffin. He had lived in Columbus since 1947 and wa [sic] a retired masonry 
contractor. A Mason, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of 
Edgewood Baptist Church.
     Survivors include his wife, Doris; two sons, Gary Griffin of Columbus and Phil Griffin 
of Clearwater, Fla.; a daughter, Carol Moseley of Fort Mitchell, Ala.; a brother, Gene 
Griffin of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sisters, Louie Alverson of Columbus and Odene Hicks 
of Brookfield, Wis.; and three grandchildren.

Elmer G. Cosper

     (NEWELL) Elmer G. Cosper, 62, of Rt. 1, Newell, died Friday, May 20, 1994, in 
West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after an extended illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Antioch Baptist Church, with 
Rev. Tommy Wright and Rev. Charlie Bolt officiating. Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
     Mr. Cosper is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Eason Cosper of Newell; one daughter, 
Mrs. Judy Sears of Woodland; one son, Gary Cosper of Newell; three grandchildren, 
Misty Cosper, Kim Cosper and David Sears; daughter-in-law, Donna Cosper; son-in-law, 
Eddie Sears; two brothers, Mabry Cosper of Bowdon, Ga., and Leo Cosper of Graham; 
and three sisters, Ina Lou Morgan and Barbara Thomason of Anniston and Pearl Teal of 
Hennesey, Okla.
     Pallbearers were Mike McCormick, Chelcie Dunlap, Jimmy Eason, Brandon Arrington, 
Jason McCormick, Steve Pike, Tim Benefield, Gary Roberts and Durant Noles. Grandson 
David Sears was honorary pallbearer.
     Mr. Cosper was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, was retired as a 
carpenter with G. C. Coyler Construction Company and was a member of Carpenters 
Local Union 1749.
     Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Helen B. [sic - R] Carson

     (WADLEY) Helen R. Carson, 72, of Rt. 1, Wadley, died Sunday, May 22, 1994, at the 
residence of her daughter on Rt. 3, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Forrester's Chapel United 
Methodist Church, with Revs. Calvin Teel, Wayne Jetton and Joe Mallory officiating. 
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
     Mrs. Carson is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Marcia Houze of Alabaster and Mrs. 
Nancy Cofield of Roanoke; three sons, John Carson, Tommy Carson and Bill Carson of 
Wadley; two brothers, John Will Roquemore of Dayton, Ohio, and George Roquemore of 
Macon, Ga.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.
     Mrs. Carson was a native of Chambers County who moved to Randolph County from 
Lanett 45 years ago. She was a homemaker and a seamstress with the textile industry and 
was a member of Forrester's Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death 
by her husband, Ray Carson.
     In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Forrester's Chapel 
United Methodist Church Building Fund.
     Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Joseph Emil Adams, Jr.

     (SOLADA, Guatemala) Joseph Emil Joe Adams, Jr., 46, of Waller, Texas, died 
Tuesday, May 10, 1994, in Solada, Guatemala. He was buried in Panajachel, Guatemala.
     The last years of Mr. Adams's life were spent living intermittently between Waller, 
Texas, near family and friends, and Guatemala, were he had a great appreciation for the 
beauty of the land and the warmth and creativity of the people.
     Mr. Adams is survived by his mother, Mrs. Faye Akin Adams of Roanoke; a sister and 
brother-in-law, Joyce and Joel Schoepf of Waller, Texas; and a niece and two nephews. 
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Booby Adams, Sr., of Wadley.
