OBITUARIES:

Leola Sorrell Pool

   (ROANOKE) Services for Leola Sorrell Pool, 94, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, 
June 1, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at Roanoke First United Methodist Church, with the 
Rev. Dan Waller officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Pool will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services 
Wednesday.
   Mrs. Pool died Monday, May 30, at Williamsburg Manor, Roanoke.
   Survivors include one daughter of Roanoke; one son of Montgomery; five 
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
   A lifelong Roanoke resident, Mrs. Pool was born June 27, 1910, in Newnan, 
Ga., daughter of George W. and Naomi Patton Sorrell.  She was a retired 
registered nurse, employed with Randolph County Hospital.  She was a faithful 
and active member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church, a member of the 
American Legion Auxiliary and the AARP.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Fred B. Pool.

William Martin Bledsoe

   (OPELIKA) William Marion Bledsoe, 58, of Opelika died Thursday, May 26, 
2005, at his residence.
   Services were Tuesday, May 31, at 11 a.m. EDT at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Frank Rittenberry officiating.  
Burial followed at Fairview Cemetery in Valley.
   Mr. Bledsoe is survived by three daughters, two sons, three brothers, one 
sister and 14 grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Robert and Hazel Coulter 
Bledsoe.
   Mr. Bledsoe was born Dec. 9, 1946, in Langdale.  He belonged to the 
Methodist faith and was a member of the Disabled Veteran's Association.  He 
enjoyed writing and singing gospel music.  He also loved spending time with his 
grandchildren.  Mr. Bledsoe enjoyed camping, fishing and talking to people.

John Wyatt Jackson

   (ROANOKE) Services for John Wyatt Jackson, 76, of Roanoke were Sunday, May 
29, 2005, at 4 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Floyd Carmack 
and Tracy Davis officiating.  Burial was at Rock Springs Christian Church 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Jackson died Friday, May 27, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Survivors include his wife, one daughter, two sons, two sisters, one brother 
and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Larry Crozier, Denny Jackson, Craig Jackson, Barry Wooten, 
John Herndon and Gary Jackson. Honorary pallbearer was Danny Jackson.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Jackson was born Jan. 27, 1929, son of John 
Wyatt Jackson Sr. and Minnie Lee Waldrop Jackson.  He was a member of Rock 
Springs Christian Church and had been employed as an electrician with Handley 
Mills and Haynes Mills.

Chasity Briana Burks(infant)

   (ROCK MILLS) Services for Chasity Briana Burks, infant daughter of Kristie 
Anne Moore and Timothy Brian Burks of Rock Mills, were Sunday, May 29, 2005, at 
2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald Sheppard 
officiating.  Burial was at Rock Mills Cemetery.
   Chasity was born Jan. 8 in Chambers County.  She died Thursday, May 26, at 
her home.
   Survivors include her parents; two brothers, maternal grandparents, paternal 
grandparents, great-grandmother, great-grandparents and several aunts, uncles 
and cousins.
   Pallbearers were Tony Burks, Jimmy Burks, Russell Kirby and Chad Mitchum.

Mary Hallman Rogers

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Mary Rogers, 88, of LaGrange, Ga., died Saturday, May 28, 
2005, at West Georgia Medical Center.
   Mrs. Rogers was born April 10, 1917, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of 
the late H.L. Hallman and Nora Ray Hallman. Mrs. Rogers was retired from 
Callaway Mills Company and was a member of Hillside Christian Church.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband of more than, 50 years, C. Paul Rogers.
   Survivors include her son, three grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were Monday, May 30, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Striffler-
Hamby Mortuary with the Rev. Rance Sprayberry and the Rev. Paul Blair 
officiating.  Burial followed in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
   In lieu of flowers, donations to the Diabetes Education Program of Coleman 
Community Health Center, c/o WGHS, 1514 Vernon Rd., LaGrange, GA 30240 may be 
made in memory of Mrs. Rogers.

Florence Beck Spratlin

   (WOODLAND) Services for Florence Beck Spratlin, 89, of Woodland, were 
Saturday, May 28, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. 
Cecil Halsey and David Daniel officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining 
church cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of the 
arrangements.
   Mrs. Spratlin died Thursday, May 26, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Mrs. Spratlin is survived by five daughters, four sons, one sister, 33 
grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were her grandsons.
   Mrs. Spratlin was born April 21, 1916, the daughter of Harvey and Mary 
Ramsey Beck. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church and a homemaker.  
Mrs. Spratlin is preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Spratlin; one son, 
Thomas Bud Spratlin; three grandchildren; three brothers; and two sisters.  
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Providence 
Cemetery/Building Fund.

Raleigh Henry Huddleston

   (ROANOKE) Services for Raleigh Henry Huddleston of Roanoke, 78, were 
Saturday, May 28, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. 
Ridley Parmer officiating.  Burial followed at Bethel East Baptist Church 
Cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
   Mr. Huddleston died Thursday, May 26, at the V.A. Hospital in Tuskegee.
   Survivors include one son, three daughters, one sister, three brothers, 
seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Charlie Brown, Earl Spratlin, Roger Maddox, Tracy Eason, 
Gary Parmer and Frank Campbell.
   Mr. Huddleston was born Feb. 25, 1927, son of Monroe and Mamie Henry 
Huddleston.  He was a member of Bethel East Baptist Church and served in the 
United States Army and Marines during World War II and the Korean Conflict.  He 
retired from the military after 30 years of service.  Mr. Huddleston is 
preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Veil Huddleston.

Velma Wright Pike

   (TUCKER, Ga.) Velma Pike, 92, of Tucker, Ga., died Thursday, May 26, 2005, 
at her home.
   Mrs. Pike was born Jan. 14, 1913, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the 
late Moses and Laura Clark Wright.  Wife of the late Leron "Sonny" Pike, she 
lived in Hogansville, Ga., for many years, where she raised her family and 
retired from Uniroyal Inc.  She had lived in the Atlanta area for 35 years, 
where she retired from Pike Nurseries and was a member of Harrell Grove Baptist 
Church.
   Survivors include three daughters, one son, 12 grandchildren, 15 
grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by 
a daughter, Pat Rogers.
   Services were at 2:30 p.m. Sunday,, May 29, in the chapel of Claude A. 
McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville.  Dr. Bob Browning officiated and 
interment was in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.

Ezell Boyd Waldrop Monroe

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Services for Ezell Waldrop Monroe, 82, of Alexander City 
were at 12 p.m. Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the chapel of Alabama Funeral Homes 
in Dadeville.  The Rev. David Rozelle officiated.  Burial followed at 
Tallapoosa County Memory Gardens in Dadeville.
   Mrs. Monroe died Thursday, May 26, at Brown's Nursing Home in Alexander City.
   She was born in Randolph County on Jan. 26, 1923, to Augustus Boyd and Onie 
McManus Boyd.  She was preceded in death by her former husband, Ralph Waldrop; 
her parents; one son, Carson Waldrop; and one daughter, Carolyn Langley.
   She is survived by her husband, three sons, four daughters, two sisters, 20 
grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
   In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Southern 
Care Hospice at 137 Franklin St., Alexander City, AL 350101.

Joel Magby

   (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Joel Magby, 23, of Columbus, Ga., died at a healthcare 
facility in Columbus on Tuesday, May 24, 2005.
   Joel was born Nov. 6, 1981, in Randolph County.  He was a member of The 
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Columbus.  A graduate of Kendrick High 
School in Columbus, Joel learned to draw from his father, Joe, at an early age 
and art became his passion.  He was also very good in math.  Devri Institute 
offered him a full scholarship for art and mathematical skills, but his 
lifelong sickness due to kidney disease prevented him from realizing that goal.
   Joel is survived by his mother, stepfather, and sister, father and 
stepmother, a grandfather and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.  He was 
preceded in death by grandmother Minnie Mae Johnson and grandparents Cullen Lee 
Magby and Annie Lee Magby of Roanoke.

Lula Mae Ruckert

   (ROANOKE)Services for Lula Mae Ruckert, 92, of Roanoke were Saturday, May

   Mrs. Ruckert died Thursday, May 26, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Survivors include three daughters, one son, two sisters, 17 grandchildren, 
24 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Ruckert was born May 8, 1913, daughter of Jessie and Naomi Ray Evans.  
She was a member of Standing Rock Methodist Church and a homemaker.  Mrs. 
Ruckert was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Ruckert.

Emma Cooper Cox Minnifield

   (MUNFORD) Funeral services for Emma Cooper Cox Minnifield, 75, of Munford 
were at 12 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Mars Hill Baptist Church in 
Anniston, with the Rev. George T. Bates officiating.  Burial was in Eden Hills 
Cemetery in Anniston with Goodson Funeral Home in charge.
   Mrs. Minnifield died Sunday, May 22, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
   Survivors include one son, five daughters, six step-children, one sister, a 
brother, 32 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.
   Mrs. Minnifield was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Minnifield; a 
son, Ben Cooper; her father, George Bailey; mother, Eliza Bailey; two brothers, 
Oran and Willie Bailey; two sisters, Cloris Bonner and Heard Bailey.

C.L. Johnson

   (HEFLIN) Services for C.L. Johnson, 71, of Heflin, were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, 
May 31, 2005, at Dryden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Johnson 
officiating.
   Mr. Johnson died Saturday, May 28, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
   Survivors include his wife, a sister, several nieces and nephews.  
Pallbearers were nephews.
   Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 12, 1934, in Gold Ridge.  A native of Randolph 
County and a resident of Cleburne County for most of his life, he was retired 
from the Cleburne County School system where he worked in the libraries at 
Cleburne County High School and Pleasant Grove Elementary School.

Howard Arthur Turner

   (WEDOWEE) Howard Arthur Turner, 82, of Wedowee died Sunday, May 29, 2005, at 
Wedowee Hospital.
   Services will be Friday, June 3, at 2 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist 
Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. William W. Crawford officiating.  Burial will be 
in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include three sons, two daughters, a brother, 10 grandchildren and 
one great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Turner; 
three brothers, Charlie Turner, Willis Turner and Melvin Turner; and three 
sisters, Ethel Lou Angel, Carrie Harris and Jimmie Staples.
   Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service from 10 a.m. until 
6 p.m. Thursday.  The body will be placed in the church one hour before 
services.

John Hester Heard

   (ACWORTH, Ga.) Services for John Hester Heard, 74, of Acworth, Ga., were 
Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church, with the Revs. 
Scott Hannah and John Barbee officiating.  Burial will followed in the church 
cemetery.
   Mr. Heard died Saturday, May 28.
   Survivors include one son, one daughter, one brother, two sisters, five 
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.	
   Mr. Heard served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.   He was 
an airline mechanic and retired from Northwest Airlines.  Mr. Heard was a 
member of Acworth First Baptist Church.

Phillip Dale Reaves

   (LINEVILLE) Services for Phillip Dale Reaves, 52, of Lineville were Tuesday, 
June 7, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Bolt 
officiating.  Burial was in Wesley's Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Reaves died Friday, June 3, at his residence.
   Mr. Reaves is survived by one daughter, two sons, his parents, one sister, 
one brother and six grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Payne Reaves, Brian Fetner, Stephen Fetner, Santiago 
Hernandez, Phillip Moody and Carl Reaves.
   Mr. Reaves was born June 18, 1952.  He was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam veteran, 
a member of the Alabama National Guard and a self employed auto mechanic.  He 
is preceded in death by his wife, Judy Ross Reaves; and one brother, Jacky 
Reaves.

James Ralph Parmer

   (WOODLAND) James Ralph Parmer, 84, of 18506 County Road 87, Woodland died 
Monday, June 6, 2005 at Carrollton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
   Services will be Wednesday, June 8, at 1 p.m. CDT at Bethel East Baptist 
Church, with the Revs. Terry Eason and Jimmy Palmer officiating.  Music will be 
by the church choir.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.
   Pallbearers will be Allen Daniel, Steve Easter, Michael Hayes, Alec Sutton, 
Thomas Kirby, Joe Messer, Christopher Butler and Jonathon Daniel.
   Mr. Parmer was born in Randolph County July 20, 1920, son of the late 
Charles and Martha Driver Parmer.  He was a retired farmer and a member of 
Bethel East Baptist Church.
   Surviving are a son, two daughters, seven grandchildren; six great-
grandchildren; two brothers, and a sister.  He was preceded in death by his 
wife, Gertrude Cunningham Parmer; a son, Dennis Hawl Parmer; a daughter, 
Carolyn Margaret Parmer Campbell; a grandson, Danny Parmer; two brothers and 
one sister.
   The family will receive friends at Rainwater Funeral Home, Bowdon, Ga., on 
Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. CDT.  Mr. Parmer will lie in state at the church for 
one hour prior to services.

James Porter Benefield

   (HOOVER) Services for James Porter Benefield, 85, of Hoover, formerly of 
Roanoke, were Monday, June 6, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. William L. Dean officiating.  Burial with full military 
honors followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Benefield died Friday, June 3, at University of Alabama Medical Center 
in Birmingham.
   Survivors include his wife, a son and several nieces and nephews, including

   A Roanoke resident most of his life, Mr. Benefield was a Randolph County 
native, born Sept. 13, 1919, son of William L. and Elizabeth Wilson Benefield.  
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 801st/492nd Bombardment 
Group, 8th U.S. Army Air Corps and also served elsewhere on active duty and in 
the Alabama National Guard.  He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1974.  He 
was the director of Aging Services, East Alabama Regional Planning and 
Development Commission, until his retirement in 1992.  He was presented with 
the Golden Eagles Medal of Honor upon his election to the Alabama Senior 
Citizens Hall of Fame.

Gordon Harris

   (LANETT) The Rev. Gordon Harris, 85, a retired Baptist minister, died 
Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Bethany House.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley on 
Monday, June 6, at 3 p.m. EDT.  Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett.
   Rev. Harris was a graduate of Howard College (Samford University) and New 
Orleans Baptist Seminary.  He served several churches in Alabama as pastor and 
interim pastor.  He was pastor of Huguley Baptist Church for some 30 years and 
during that time also worked as an insurance agent.  He was an Army Air Force 
veteran of World War II, serving nearly four years, much of that time in Europe 
as crew chief on P-38 fighter planes.
   Survivors include his wife of 59 years, two sons, two brothers, one sister, 
two granddaughters, two great-granddaughters and other relatives and friends.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Samuel and Mattie Beatrice 
Harris; brothers Pettus, George and Parker Harris; and sisters Margaret Bennett 
and Annie Lois Lamb.
   The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to 
Bethany House, the American Cancer Society or to a church of one's choice.

Charlie Knight

   (BIRMINGHAM) Charlie Knight, 84, of Birmingham and a native of Randolph 
County, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Preston Hospital in Birmingham.
   Services will be Saturday, June 11, at 1 p.m. at Pine Flat Primitive Baptist 
Church, Wedowee, with Elder Thomas Knight officiating.  Interment will be in 
the church cemetery.
   There will be no public viewing hours.  The family hour will be at 
Bushelon's Funeral Home, 800 14th Street SW, Birmingham, from 6 until 7 p.m. 
Friday.  The body will be placed in the church one hour before services on 
Saturday.
   Surviving are four sons, six daughters, one sister and two brothers.  He was 
preceded in death by his parents, Robert H. Knight and Sally Fannie Knight.

Carl Leonard Holtzclaw

   Services for Carl Leonard Holtzclaw, 73, of Roanoke, formerly of Newnan, 
Ga., were Sunday, June 5, 2005, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with 
the Rev. Stanley Daniel and the Rev. Shannon Mapp officiating.  Burial followed 
in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Holtzclaw died Friday, June 3, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Survivors include two sons, special friend, and a nephew.
   Mr. Holtzclaw was a native of Coweta County, Ga., born June 22, 1931, son of 
John Washington and Lucile Sexton Holtzclaw.  He was a graduate of Grantville 
High School and was a Korean War army veteran.  He had been employed as a truck 
driver, carpenter, and recently owner and operator of the Red Barn near 
Roanoke.  He had been a member of the Masonic Lodge in Moreland, Ga., for 25 
years.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bonnell Adams 
Holtzclaw; and a sister, Nadine Faulkner.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to El Bethel 
Girls Home or the American Cancer Society.

Mary Sue Hunter Nichols

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mary Sue Hunter Nichols, 97, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
June 5, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Dean 
officiating.  Burial followed in Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Nichols died Friday, June 3, at Williamsburg Manor in Roanoke.
   Survivors include one nephew, Earl Blair of Spartanburg, S.C.; four great-
nieces; and four great-nephews.
   Mrs. Nichols was born Sept. 4, 1907, daughter of J.S. and Addie Pittman 
Hunter.  She graduated from Handley High School and received a B.S. degree from 
George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn.  She taught in 
Tallassee, Alex City, Norcross, Ga., and Shelman, Ga., for 12 years, moved to 
Mobile and retired after 40 years of teaching, the last 28 of which were at 
Keinkauf School.  After her retirement she remained active in her church and 
other organizations.   She resided in Mobile for 63 years before returning to 
Roanoke in August 2004.  Mrs. Nichols was a long-time member of Delta Kappa 
Gamma, Mobile Retired Teachers and Alabama Retired Teachers.  She was preceded 
in death by her husband, Ralph B. Nichols; parents; and three sisters, Addie 
Jim Hunter, Willie Blakely Hunter and Fannie Hunter Muldrew.  Flowers will be 
accepted or memorials may be made to Riverside Baptist Church, 3130 Dauphin 
Island Pkwy, Mobile, AL 36605 or First Baptist Church, 109 Main St., Roanoke,

Exola Green Bryan

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Exola Green Bryan, 89, of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, 
June 1, 2005, at West Georgia Medical Center.
   Mrs. Bryan was born Aug. 19, 1915, in Randolph County, daughter of the late 
Lewis W. and Ludie Cline Green.  She was a retired nurse's assistant from 
Bowdon Area Hospital and was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Woodland.
   Survivors include a daughter, a stepdaughter, four grandchildren; five great-
grandchildren; one sister, a sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
   Services were at 2 p.m. CDT on Friday, June 3, at Providence Baptist Church 
in Woodland.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.  The Revs. Lamar Womack, 
Jimmy Pruitt and Olin White officiated.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Venia Mae D. Rollins, 55, of Roanoke will be

   Mrs. Rollins died Monday, June 6, at Wedowee Hospital.  The family will

Annie L. Lawson

   (HAMMOND, Ind.) Annie L. Lawson, 82, of Hammond, Ind., died Monday, May 23, 
2005, at Select Specialty Hospital in Hammond.
   She was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Roanoke to the late Vera and Gertrude 
Carter.  She was also preceded in death by her sister, Ruthie Adams, in 1990.
   Mrs. Lawson is survived by her daughter, a brother, two nieces and a host of 
cousins and many friends.  
   Services were at 11 a.m. at Alpha Mortuary, Gary, Ind.,with the Rev. Charles 
Maclin officiating.  Interment was in Concordia Cemetery, Hammond.

Mary Allen Lumpkin

   (TALLADEGA) Graveside rites for Mary Allen Lumpkin, 89, of Talladega were at 
10 a.m. Monday, June 13, 2005, at Pine Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill 
Gandy officiating.  Mrs. Lumpkin died Saturday, June 11, at Talladega Health 
Care Center.
   Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, two grandsons; and numerous 
nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Andy Brown, Will Lawrence, Wallis Elliott, David Newnam, 
Greg Caldwell and Todd Caldwell.  Mrs. Lumpkin was a native of Randolph County 
and was raised in Alexander City.  She moved to Talladega in the mid-1940s.  
She was a lifelong homemaker and member of Bemiston United Methodist Church.  
Mary was the last of 13 siblings.    She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Hugh Weyman Lumpkin and 12 brothers and sisters.
   The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to First 
United Methodist Church.

George Willard Bishop

   (DAVISTON) Services for George Willard Bishop, 84, of Daviston were at 11 
a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Mountain Springs Baptist Church in Daviston, 
with the Revs. Tim Whaley and Clyde Coker officiating.  Pallbearers were 
grandsons and great-grandsons of Mr. Bishop.
   Mr. Bishop died Thursday, June 9, at his residence.  He was born in Chambers 
County on Feb. 14, 1921, to Eldred Bishop and Etna Bishop.  He was a member of 
Mountain Springs Baptist Church and worked at Avondale Mills for most of his 
life.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 82nd Mortar 
Combat Unit.
   He is survived by his wife of 59 1/2 years, four daughters, five 
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and special care-givers Maggie Dailey 
and Barbara Hartley.
   Memorial donations may be made to the Mountain Springs Baptist Church

   (ROANOKE) Beulah Mae Austin-Treadwell, 97, of Roanoke died Friday, June 10, 
2005 at her home.

Church, Roanoke, with the Revs. L.B. Houston, Robert L. Heflin and Calvin 
Trammell officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

   Mrs. Austin-Treadwell was preceded in death by her husband, William Taft 
Treadwell; her parents, Vicie Heath and Dock Austin; a son, Austin Treadwell; 
brothers Bessemer Justice, J.W. Austin, Timmy Austin, Willie Wesley Austin and 
R.B. Austin; and sisters Carrie Dell Sledge, Maggie Boyd, Vennie Wood and

   (BESSEMER) Mary Drake Williams of Bessemer, formerly of Chambers and 
Randolph counties, died Sunday, June 5, 2005.

Baptist Church, 2713 Clarendon Ave., Bessemer, with the Rev. C.R. Winton Jr.

   Mrs. Williams was a 1947 graduate of Chambers County Training School, 
LaFayette.  She was also a member of Canaan Baptist Church in the Welch 
community before moving to Bessemer.

   (NEWELL) Services for John Henry Watts, 70, of Newell were Friday, June 10,

   Mr. Watts died Wednesday, June 8, at his home.
   Mr. Watts is survived by his wife, three daughters, one son, seven

   A native of Randolph County, Mr. Watts was born Jan. 8, 1935, son of Lawson 
and Rinda Crockett Watts.  He was a member of Union Baptist Church and a road 
crew foreman for Randolph County.  Mr. Watts is preceded in death by one 
sister, Emma Baker; one son, Johnny Watts.

Lula Mae Bailey Brown

   (LANETT ) Lula Mae Brown, 85, of Lanett died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at 
Lanier Memorial Nursing Home in Valley.

Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with Dr. Randy Williams officiating.  Burial 
followed at Huguley Congregational Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Brown is survived by four daughters, two sisters, 17 grandchildren, 33 
great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Brown was born Oct. 14, 1919, in Randolph County, the daughter of the 
late Elvie Vida Wilson Bailey and Jones Henry Bailey.  She was a former 
employee of WestPoint Pepperell, where she worked at Carter Mill for more than 
15 years.  She was of the Church of Christ faith.  Mrs. Brown was preceded in 
death by her husband, Odell Brown; and her children, Milton Brown, Ealon Brown, 
Randy Brown and Rhonda Brown.

Clarence Connell

   (HEFLIN) Services for Clarence Connell, 89, of Heflin were at 11 a.m.

   Mr. Connell died Monday, June 6, at Cleburne Nursing Home in Heflin.

   Pallbearers were David Golden, Donnie Wilson, Ken Beck, Tyrone Connell, 
Dennis Connell, Doyce Connell and Donnie Connell.
   Mr. Connell was a native and lifelong resident of Heflin.  He was a 
carpenter by trade, who also retired from the Anniston Army Depot with 25 years 
of service.  He was the oldest deacon of Ai Baptist Church and was a member of 
Caldwell Masonic Lodge.  He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and 
the Korean War.

of William Elijah and Mary Selimma Kitchens Chase.  She attended Montevallo and 
Florence State Teachers College.  She was a homemaker and a member of Roanoke 
First Baptist Church, where she was active in the Good Fellowship Class.  She 
served as president of the W.M.U., choir soloist, instrumentalist and other 
positions in the church.  She was past president of Garden Clubs of Alabama, 
Roanoke Music Club, Roanoke Magazine club, Roanoke Garden Club, Roanoke 
Literary Club and the Handley P.T.A.  She was preceded in death by her parents; 
her husband, J.P. Phillips; and a sister, Audra Chase Hester.
   Survivors include two daughters, two sons, 11 grandchildren and seven great-
grandchildren.

Elmer Warner Cromie

   (STATESVILLE, N.C.) Services for Elmer Warner Cromie, 63, of Statesville, 
N.C., formerly of Roanoke, were Sunday, June 19, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Forest Home

military honors followed in the church cemetery.  Mr. Cromie will lie in state 
at the church for one hour prior to services.
   Mr. Cromie died Wednesday, June 15, at his daughter's home.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Cromie was born Aug. 8, 1941, son of Arthur 
and Jessie Barfield Cromie.  He attended Nebraska Elementary School and was a 
graduate of Central High School in Fort Wayne, Ind.  He was a veteran of the 
U.S. Army and lived in Statesville since 1962.  Mr. Cromie was retired from 
General Electric in Hickory, N. C., where he was a welder.  He was a member of 
Forest Home Christian Church and was a charter member of Homer's B.S. Round 
Table in Statesville.  He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, 
William Cromie; and two sisters, Valarie Johnson and Isabelle Cromie.
   Survivors include his daughter, his mother, three granddaughters; two 
sisters, and one brother.

Edward Lee Burks

   (HEFLIN) Services for Edward Lee Burks, 79, of Heflin were Sunday, June 19,

   Mr. Burks died Thursday, June 16, at Bill Nichols State Veterans Home in 
Alexander City.  He was born May 30, 1926, and was a faithful Christian having 
served as an elder at Weaver Church of Christ and Pine Hill Church of Christ in 
Randolph County.  He was a member of Heflin Church of Christ and was retired 
from M&H Valve Company with 33 years of service, where he was known as "Tiny."  
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was preceded in death by a son, 
Glen Charles Burks, and his parents, M.M. Burks Sr. and Lily Howard Burks.
   Survivors include his wife of 57 years, three daughters, four grandchildren 
and five great grandchildren; two sisters, two brothers, and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers were Horace Hightower, Dwight Porter, John A. Williamson, Van, 
C. Williamson, C.J. Williamson, Thomas F. Williamson and Mike Lecroy.

in Fredonia from 1945 until March of 2004.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Marvin Ezra Moore.

W. Wendell Knight

   (ANNISTON) Services for W. Wendell Knight, 83, of Anniston were Saturday, 
June 18, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel with Dr. Roland Brown 
and the Rev. C.C. McCain officiating.  A graveside service was at 3 p.m. at 
Randolph Memory Gardens in Roanoke.
   Mr. Knight died Thursday, June 16, in Anniston.
   He is survived by three sisters, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Knight was a native of Randolph County and a long-time resident of 
Anniston, where he was a retired civil service employee at Fort McClellan.  He 
was a member of the Golden Springs Baptist Church, the Men's Fellowship Class 
and a member of the Masonic Alexandria Lodge # 208.  Mr. Knight was a World War 
II veteran and was preceded in death by his wife, Melvalene Nolen Knight; his 
parents, Truitt and Myrtle Knight.
   Pallbearers were nephews and honorary pallbearers were members of the Men's 
Fellowship Class of Golden Springs Baptist Church.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a favorite 
charity.

Lula Bernice Mitchell Smith

   (VALLEY) Lula Bernice Mitchell Smith, 92, of Valley died Tuesday, June 14, 
2005, at Lanier Memorial Nursing Home in Valley.
   Funeral services were Thursday, June 16, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Frank Lyons officiating.  Burial 
followed at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
   Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, two grandchildren; and one great-
grandchild.
   Born July 10, 1912, in Lamar, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Donie 
Coker Mitchell and John Mitchell.  She had lived in the Valley area most of her 
life and was an avid flower grower, gardener and ceramic artist.  Mrs. Smith 
had been in declining health for the past several years.  She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Arthur Cleveland Smith.

Gilbert Rudolph White

   (VALLEY) Gilbert Rudolph White, 72, of Valley, died Tuesday, June 14, 2005, 
at his residence.
   Surviving are his wife,; a son, a daughter, three grandchildren; a sister 
and two brothers.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 4 
p.m. on Thursday, June 16, with burial in Johnson Memorial Gardens.
   Mr. White was a native of Randolph County, born Aug. 31, 1930, to the late 
Irma Kitchens White and Almon White.  He was a retired employee of Uniroyal in 
Opelika and a member of Faith Baptist Church.  He was a veteran, having served 
with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Nora Magnolia Clegg Hart

   (DUBLIN, Texas)  Nora Magnolia Clegg Hart, 92, died Jan. 1, 2005, at 
Canterbury Villa Nursing Home in Stephenville, Texas.
   Her funeral service will be Saturday, June 25, at 4:30 p.m. at Pleasant Hill 
Methodist Church in Wadley.  Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
   Mrs. Hart was born Oct. 20, 1912, in Wadley to Kentchen Marvin Clegg and 
Betty Pauline Thomason.  She was the oldest of seven children.  She was a 1st 
Lt. U.S. Army nurse during World War II and a member of the Methodist Church.
   Survivors include a daughter, a son, a brother, five grandchildren and five 
great-grandchildren.

Sarah Helen Moon Kitchens

   (ROANOKE) Services for Sarah Helen Moon Kitchens, 79, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Frank Foster officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Kitchens died Tuesday, June 21, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Survivors include her husband, one son, three sisters, four brothers, and 
five grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Dwayne Foster, John Glass, Gregg Norred, Rusty Guizar, 
Ricky Daniel and Johnny Earnest.
   Mrs. Kitchens was born Oct. 5, 1925, daughter of James Martin and Hattie Lou 
Brown Moon. She was a member of the Rock Mills Church of the Nazarene and a 
retired sales clerk for Genuine Motor Parts of Wedowee. Mrs. Kitchens was 
preceded in death by two brothers, Willie and Ray Moon.

William J. Lashley

   (DADEVILLE) William J. Lashley, 78, of Dadeville died at his home on 
Thursday, July 16, 2005.
   Services were at Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, 
June 18, with entombment at Resthaven Mausoleum in Lanett with Terry Harris 
officiating.
   Born in Chambers County on March 26, 1927, Mr. Lashley was a World War II 
veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.  He worked in the Langdale division of 
West Point Pepperell for several years, and then was co-owner of Traylor 
Nursing Home in LaFayette from 1966 to 1980.  He was of the Baptist faith and 
had lived on Lake Martin since 1980.
   Mr. Lashley is survived by his wife, a special daughter, three sisters, two 
grandchildren; a daughter-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews.  He was 
preceded in death by his parents, Barney Lubin and Mardecia Lashley; his son, 
Donald Lashley; three brothers Carlton Howard and Roy Lashley; and two sisters, 
Willie Mae Lashley and Mattie Lou Price.	
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one's favorite charity.

James Jennings

   (OHATCHEE) Services for James Jennings, 66, of Ohatchee will be Wednesday, 
June 29, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Homer 
Longoria officiating.  Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
   Mr. Jennings died Sunday, June 26, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, four children, eight grandchildren; one brother, 
four sisters.
   Pallbearers will be Johnny Smith, Lil John Smith, Wayne Bright, LeWayne 
Bright, Brian Bright, and P.D. Pritchett.
   Mr. Jennings was a long-time employee of Southern Plating and Machinery and 
retired from Alacote Inc.

Carolyn Barnes

   (FIVE POINTS) Carolyn Barnes, 61, of Five Points died Friday, June 24, 2005, 
at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   Funeral services were Monday, June 27, at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Cecil Halsey officiating.  Burial 
followed at Fredonia United Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Barnes is survived by her husband, three sons, two brothers, her 
stepmother and seven grandchildren.
   Born in Alabama on July 27, 1943, Mrs. Barnes was the daughter of the late 
Annie Faye Guffey Shiflett and Charlie Ezra Shiflett.  She was very talented 
and artistic in arts and crafts.

Elizabeth Hines Whitworth

   (SPINDALE, N.C.) Elizabeth Hines Whitworth, 80, departed this life Sunday, 
June 19, 2005, at Rutherford Hospital.
   Born April 4, 1925, in LaGrange, Ga., she was a daughter of Beatrice Dennis 
Hines Allen of Anniston and the late Odell Hines.  She was married to the late 
Ulysses G. Whitworth, former agriculture teacher at Carver High School, 
Spindale, and agricultural extension agent for Rutherford County.  They met at 
Tuskegee Institute.  She was a founding and charter member of Busy Matron's 
Leisure Hour Club and was employed at New Hope Elementary School and at 
Rutherfordton Elementary School for the 10 years before her retirement.
   In addition to her mother, she leaves to cherish precious memories, a son, a 
daughter, four sisters, and five grandchildren.
   Instead of flowers, donations may be made to Ulysses and Elizabeth Whitworth 
Scholarship Fund at New Zion Baptist Church, 619 Ledbetter Rd., Spindale.
   The funeral was Saturday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at New Zion Baptist Church 
with the Rev. Donald Brown officiating.  Burial followed in Sunset Memorial 
Park.

Eva Riddle Bain

   (ATLANTA) Services for Eva Riddle Bain, 87, of Atlanta were at 11 a.m. 
Friday, June 24, 2005, at Dryden Funeral Home Chapel in Heflin with Dr. Larry 
Riddle and the Rev. Bob Bain officiating.  Burial was in Morrison Chapel 
Cemetery in Randolph County.
   Mrs. Bain died Tuesday, June 21, in Decatur, Ga.
   Survivors include two daughters, four sisters, four sisters-in-law; two 
grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were nephews.
   Mrs. Bain was a native of Heflin and a graduate of Snead Junior College and 
attended Jacksonville State University.  She worked for the federal government 
and for United Motors Service for more than 25 years.  Mrs. Bain was a member 
of 2nd Ponce de Leon Baptist.
   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.

Kelly Holloway Campbell

   (ROANOKE) Services for Kelly Holloway Campbell, 39, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
June 26, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Revs. Richard 
Richie, Mickey Kipper and Henry Nelson officiating.  Burial was at Randolph 
Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Campbell died Friday, June 24, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Survivors include her father and stepmother, two brothers, two stepsisters, 
one stepbrother and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Larry Holloway, Mike Potts, Joey Fincher, Brian Rape, Mark 
Jordan and Kenneth Rowland.
   Mrs. Campbell was born April 11, 1966, daughter of Walter Holloway and Lois 
Mae Wagner.  She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and a clerk at Randolph 
Medical Center.

Ertis L. Pollard

   (WEST POINT, Ga.) Mrs. Ertis L. Pollard, 90, of West Point, Ga., died 
Friday, June 24, 2005, at her residence.  Services were Tuesday, June 28, at 11 
a.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Lanett with the Rev. Wendel Brown 
officiating.  Burial followed at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.  
   Mrs. Pollard is survived by two sons, two brothers, two sisters, and three 
grandchildren.
   Mrs. Pollard was born in Cleburne County on Aug. 2, 1914.  She was a member 
of Flat Shoals Baptist Church in West Point, where she was a piano player and 
was one of the first to get the church started.

David Clayton Gosdin

   (WEDOWEE) Services for David Clayton Gosdin, 30, of Wedowee were Friday, 
June 24, 2005 at 2 p.m. at New Life Center Church of God, with the Rev. Jerry

   Mr. Gosdin died Tuesday, June 21, at Randolph Medical Center.
   Mr. Gosdin is survived by his mother, his father, two daughters, one son and 
one brother.
   Pallbearers were Jason Boyd, Randall Boyd, Josh Higgins, Rodney Milam, Kevin 
Whaley and Chris Stewart.
   Mr. Gosdin was born Jan. 24, 1975, son of _____.  He was a member of Wedowee 
Church of God and a carpenter on home construction.  He was preceded in death 
by his grandparents, John and Annie Bell Boyd and Clayton and Vedie Gosdin.

Herbert G. Perry

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Herbert G. Perry, 58, of Wedowee were Sunday, June 
26, 2005 at 3 p.m. at Wedowee First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. 
Harris Hand officiating.  Burial was in Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Perry died Friday, June 24, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center, Alabaster.
   Mr. Perry was born Nov. 17, 1946, son of Charles Sydney and Annie Bell 
McLeroy Perry.  He was a member of Wedowee First United Methodist Church and a 
member of the Wedowee Kiwanis Club for more than 30 years. He was a store clerk 
at Perryland Foods and a volunteer with the Wedowee Fire Department.
   Surviving are his wife, two daughters and a son.  He was preceded in death 
by his parents and two sons, Richard and Charles Perry.
