OBITUARIES:

Katherine Greene Awbrey

   (BIRMINGHAM) Graveside funeral services for Katherine Greene Awbrey, 85, of 
Birmingham, formerly of Opelika, were Friday, July 31, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Garden Hills 
Cemetery.  Dr. Tom Tippett officiated.
   Mrs. Awbrey, who died Wednesday, July 29, at Birmingham, was born Nov. 17, 1917, 
in Wedowee.
   She is survived by one son, Randy Awbrey of Blairsville, Ga.; two daughters, Suzanne 
Hovarter of Birmingham and Martha Smith of Blairsville; nine grandchildren; seven great- 
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Frederick's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Homer J. Hester

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Homer J. Hester Jr., 74, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Ladd 
Williams officiating.
   Mr. Hester died Monday, Aug. 3, at his home.
   A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, he was born Dec. 19, 1923, son of 
Homer Hester Sr. and Elsie Mae Ogletree Hester.  He was a World War II army veteran 
and the owner and operator of a grocery store.
   Survivors include his wife, Doris Barnes Hester; one daughter, Teresa Carse of 
Roanoke; one son, Jerone Hester of Roanoke; two grandsons; two great-grandchildren; 
and one sister, Iva Dean Sharpe of Opelika.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Dell Keeble

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Dell Keeble, 75, of LaGrange, GA, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, 
at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after a lengthy illness.
   Mrs. Keeble was a native of Randolph County, AL, born July 28, 1923, daughter of 
D. C. [Drew C.] and Minnie Kirby Cunningham and was the former owner and operator 
of Joe & Dell's Restaurant.  She lived most of her life in LaGrange, where she was a 
member of First Baptist Church of LaGrange and also attended Unity Baptist Church.
   Graveside services were in Restlawn Memory Gardens, LaGrange, at 11 a.m. on Friday, 
July 31, with the Rev. Bobby Robinson officiating.
   Surviving are one daughter, Mary Jo Keeble of New York, NY; one son, Jimmy Keeble 
of Cullowhee, N.C.; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Benefield of Roanoke and Jean 
Brown of College Park, GA; two brothers, Herman Cunningham of Rock Mills and Drew 
Cunningham of Wedowee; and several nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements were by Hunter Allen Myhand Funeral Home, LaGrange.

Nellie Holcombe Hester

   (ANNISTON) Nellie Holcombe Hester, 93, of Anniston died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, 
in Beckwood Manor.
   She was born in Carroll County, Ga., Aug. 4, 1904, daughter of the late Cody and Ella 
Norton Holcombe.  Mrs. Hester was a member of Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church 
in Carroll County and was a retired employee of Bremen-Bowdon Investment Co.  She 
was preceded in death by a son, James William Batchelor, on March 1, 1994.
   Survivors include two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Graveside services were Friday, July 31, at noon at the Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist 
Church Cemetery, with Elder Lewis Norton officiating.
   Arrangements were by Rainwater-West Funeral Home of Bowdon, Ga.

Anna Oleida West

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Anna Oleida West, 88, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
Aug. 4, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ezra Nash and 
Ladd Williams officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. West died Saturday, Aug. 1, at East Alabama Medical Center.
   A former resident of Lanett, Mrs. West had lived in Randolph County for the past 
25 years.  She was a Tennessee native, born March 19, 1910.  Mrs. West had retired 
from West Point Pepperell and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
   Survivors include two nephews, Robert E. Alexander of Roanoke and Emmett Alton 
Alexander of New Mexico.
   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Macedonia Baptist Church or 
Lowell United Methodist Church.
   Pallbearers were Tubby Knight, Frankie Maddox, Ronnie Colley, Steve Nunn, 
Paul Skinner and Aaron Alexander.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Willie F. Hurston

   (SAN ANTONIO, Texas)  Willie F. Hurston, 55, of San Antonio, Texas, died 
Wednesday, June 10, 1998, in San Antonio.  He was cremated June 15 in San Antonio.
   A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. at Clark Memorial Funeral 
Parlor, Roanoke, with the Rev. William Patterson officiating.
   Mr. Hurston was born Feb. 22, 1943, in Chambers County, son of Minister Willie A. 
Hurston and the late Katie Maude Hurston.  He graduated from Phillips High School in 
Five Points and as a youth attended Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, Welch.  He 
entered the U.S. Army in 1962 and served until 1978.  He served as a paratrooper during 
the Vietnam War.  He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years.
   Survivors include his father, Willie A. Hurston of Roanoke; two sisters, Ethel Hurston 
and Kathy Sellers of Queens, N.Y.; two brothers, Jessie Smith of Cleveland, Ohio and 
Joseph Hurston of Detroit, Mich.
   He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, George Hurston.

Blanche Green Avery

   (KNOXVILLE, Tenn.)  Blanche Green Avery, 89, of The Meadows in West Knoxville, 
Tenn., died Monday July 27, 1998, at Ft. Sanders Parkwest after a lengthy illness.
   Mrs. Avery was a native of Randolph and Chambers counties, Ala., and daughter of the 
late J. L. B. (Berry) and Ali Green.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William 
Marvin Avery; her parents; three brothers and four sisters.
   She is survived by a son, William M. Avery of Cottage Grove, Tenn.; a daughter, Carol 
Hibbard of Concord, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Bartlett and Sarah 
Wilson of Roanoke.
   Services were at Highland Memorial Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29. 
Entombment was in the Avery Mausoleum at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Highland Memorial Funeral Home.

Joseph Yancy Willoughby

   (SMITHS) Joseph Yancey "Joe" Willoughby, 78, of Smiths died July 30, 1998, at 
East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after a courageous battle with cancer.
   Funeral services were Sunday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. EDT at Midway Baptist Church, with 
the Rev. Wayne Ivey and the Rev. James McCarley officiating.  Interment was in 
Lakeview Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Willoughby was born May 12, 1920, in Cusseta, son of Rosa Griffin Willoughby 
and Joseph Willoughby.  He retired in 1984 from Ft. Benning, Ga., where he was 
employed as a diesel mechanic.  He was a veteran of World War II and a charter member 
of Midway Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon from the beginning.
   Survivors include his wife, Marilena Willoughby of Smiths; two daughters, Linda 
Willoughby of Smiths and Marie Wright of LaGrange, Ga.; a sister, Mae Thompson of 
Valley; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his son, Joey Willoughby, a sister, Helen Bradley, and a 
grandson, Robby Willoughby.
   Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Phenix City.

Willis Herbert Townley

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Willis Herbert Townley, 86, of Roanoke were 
Thursday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at Qu[a]ttlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ray Runyan 
and the Rev. Monroe Wiggins officiating.  Masonic graveside services followed at 
Bethlehem Campground United Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Townley died Wednesday, July 29, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A Cleburne County native, Mr. Townley was born Feb. 18, 1912, son of Willis Grover 
and Fannie Percilla Truett Townley.  He had lived in Roanoke most of his life and had 
worked at Southwire.  He was a member of Goldridge Baptist Church and the Roanoke 
Lodge of F&AM.  His wife, Viola Lowery Townley, preceded him in death.
   Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jean Meigs of Daviston; a sister, Amy Shelnutt of 
Roanoke; two brothers, Horace Townley and Jack Townley, both of Roanoke; 
two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Masons.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Evelyn Bates Shaddix

   (FERRUM, Va.) Evelyn Bates Shaddix, 67, of Ferrum, Va., formerly of Lanett, died 
Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at her home.  A native of Roanoke, Ala., she was preceded in 
death by her parents, Moses E. and Effie Betty Sudduth Bates, and her husband, Ephriam 
G. Shaddix Jr.
   Surviving are a daughter, Angela Allen of Brandon, Miss.; a son, B. Terrell Shaddix of 
Ferrum; four grandchildren; one sister, Martha Pugh of Birmingham; and several nieces 
and nephews.
   A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. EDT Thursday at Lanett Congregational 
Christian Church, Lanett.  Those desiring to make memorial contributions should consider 
Lanett Congregation[al] Christian Church.
   Arrangements are by Flora Funeral Service, Rocky Mount, Va.

Brian Strickland

   (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Brian Strickland, 14, of Roanoke was Saturday, 
Aug. 8, 1998, at 2 p.m. at State Line Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.  
The Rev. W. H. Trammell officiated.
   Mr. Strickland died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998.
   Survivors include his parents, Charlie and Irene Strickland; his brother, LaMorris 
Strickland; his grandmother, Mattie Mae Dean; a niece; and a host of aunts, uncles, 
cousins and friends.
   Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Steven Joseph Baldwin

   (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Steven Joseph Baldwin, 6, of Roanoke was 
Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Highway First Congregational Methodist Church, 
with the Rev. Wayne Jetton officiating.  Burial was at the church cemetery.
   Steven died Tuesday, Aug. 4, at his home after an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born March 19, 1992, in Columbus, Ga.
   Survivors include his parents, Steven L. and Sandra Baldwin of Roanoke; two sisters, 
Stephanie Baldwin and Sue Ada Baldwin of Roanoke; and his grandparents, Myrtice 
Freeman of Woodland and Mr. and Mrs. Victor Baldwin of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Andy Harrington, Eddie Harrington, Larry Cofield and Mac Baldwin.

Horace David Townley

   (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Horace David Townley, 80, of Roanoke was 
Friday, Aug 7, 1998, at 1 p.m. from Trinity Baptist Church with the Revs. Barry Cosper 
and Jim Gables officiating.  Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Townley died Wednesday, Aug. 5, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, 
after an extended illness.
   A Cleburne County native, Mr. Townley was born Dec. 17, 1917, son of Willis Grover 
and Fannie Truitt Townley.  He was a World War II army veteran and a member of Trinity 
Baptist Church.  He had retired from Transco Gas Company.
   Survivors include his wife, Lera Atkins Townley of Roanoke; one daughter, Wanda 
Stephens of Birmingham; one son, Roger Townley of Tallassee; one sister Ammie 
Shelnutt of Roanoke; one brother, Jack Townley of Roanoke; and two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Masons of the Roanoke Lodge.  Deacons of Trinity Baptist Church 
served as honorary pallbearers.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, was in charge of arrangements.

   Correction [in the The Randolph Leader, August 26, 1998 issue]:  In the obituary of 
Horace David Townley, Mr. Townley's sister's name is Amy Shelnutt, and Mr. Townley 
has three grandchildren.

Joanne Putnam Murray

   (WEDOWEE) The funeral service for Joanne Putnam Murray, 75, of Wedowee was 
at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Benefield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Carlos 
Lamar Gentry officiating.  Burial will be in Jennings, La.
   Mrs. Murray died Saturday, Aug. 8, in a traffic accident in Calhoun County.
   She was born in Auckland, New Zealand, Aug. 26, 1922, daughter of George Patrick 
and Margaret Clare Foley.  She had lived in Lake Charles, La., for many years prior to 
moving to Wedowee in 1993.  She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by a son, 
Billy Putnam.
   Survivors include her husband, Russell Murray of Wedowee; four daughters, Susan 
Schwartz of Houston, Texas, Michelle Coble of White House, Texas, Kelley Edwards of 
Wedowee and Barbara Cameron of Gulfport, Miss.; one son, Michael Putnam of Basile, 
La.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jason Schwartz, Justin Schwartz, Chris Coble, Cory Coble, 
Jason Richards and Todd Aucoin.
   Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of local arrangements.

Annie Lorene Roberts

   (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Annie Lorene Roberts, 77, of Roanoke was 
Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at 3 p.m. from Highway First Congregational Methodist Church 
with the Revs. Vernon Willis and Wayne Jetton officiating.  Burial followed at the church 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Roberts died Wednesday, Aug. 5, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange 
after an extended illness.
   A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, Mrs. Roberts was born April 15, 1921, 
daughter of Lon and Annie Mae McDonald Spears.  She was a member of Highway 
Methodist Church and retired from Palm Beach Company.  She was preceded in death by 
her husband, Ravon Roberts; one son, Raymond Monroe Whatley; and a grandson, 
Tommy Garner.
   Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Farr and Susan Cofield of Roanoke and 
Jane Garner of Pine Mountain, Ga.; two sisters, Katie Bell Anderson and Alma Cantrell of 
LaGrange; two brothers, Bill Spears and Gaines Spears of Roanoke; 12 grandchildren and 
nine great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Wayne Wilkinson, Gary Spears, Charlie Andrews, Kenneth Andrews, 
Junior Spears and Morgan Cantrell.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, was in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Jones

   (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Sarah Jones, 84, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, 
Aug. 12, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Roanoke First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tex 
Ergle officiating.  Burial and committal service will be at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park 
Cemetery in Auburn.
   Mrs. Jones died Monday, Aug. 10, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A resident of Roanoke for six years, Mrs. Jones formerly resided in Auburn.  She was 
born May 8, 1914, daughter of Charles Ridley and Una Pearl McCormack.  Mrs. Jones 
was a homemaker and a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Russell Jones Sr.
   Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Dianna Jones of Roanoke; 
two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Jones will lie in state at the church for one hour, beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, 
Aug. 12.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Roanoke First United 
Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 40, Roanoke, AL 36274.
   Pallbearers will be Kevin Beightol, Roy Reaves, Frank Phillips, John L. Lambert, 
Tom Dorman and Gerald Knight.

Sharon Lois Platt

   (ORLANDO, Fla.) Sharon Lois Platt, 45, of Orlando, Fla., died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, 
in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
   Born in Summerville, S.C., Jan. 26, 1953, she was the daughter of Carroll B. Platt Sr. 
and Mary Benton Platt of Roanoke, who survive her.  She worked in the food and beauty 
business.
   In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, James B. Johnson of Orlando, 
Fla.; two brothers, Carroll B. Platt Jr. of Washington, D.C., John M. Platt Sr. of 
Douglasville, Ga.; and one sister, Christina Jane Halstead of Newnan, Ga.
   Woodlawn Carey Hand Funeral Home of Longwood, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

Luther M. 'Shorty' Pitts

   (ENTERPRISE) Funeral services for Luther M. "Shorty" Pitts, 79, of Enterprise, 
formerly of Roanoke, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at Union Baptist 
Church, with the Rev. James Collier and the Rev. Lamar Reaves officiating.  Burial will 
follow in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Pitts died Sunday, Aug. 16, at Enterprise Medical Center after an extended illness.
   He was born in Chambers County Sept. 10, 1918, son of Albert and Viola Pitts.  He was 
self-employed as a service station operator and was a World War II veteran and a member 
of Union Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Mamie Reaves Pitts of Enterprise; one daughter, Brenda 
Weese of Enterprise; one son, Freddy M. Pitts of Spartanburg, S.C.; one sister, Cenus 
Johnson of LaGrange, Ga., six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   The family will be staying at the home of Esul and Mattie Holloway, 
5415 Old Highway 431, Newell.
   Mr. Pitts will lie in state at the church beginning at noon on Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Chris Norred, Terry Weese, Todd Waters, Raymond Bell, 
Dean Reaves, Coy Newton and Charles Lipham.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Daphie Mae Shiflett Morrison

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for Daphie Mae Shiflett Morrison, 78, of Newell will be 
at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ray Runyan 
and the Rev. Roy Wysner officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Morrison died Monday, Aug. 17, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke 
following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born June 10, 1920, daughter of 
William Ewell and Maria Jane Shiflett.  She had been employed with Sewell 
Manufacturing Company and was a member of Union Baptist Church.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Judy Heard of Newell; a son, Rodney Morrison of 
Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Mrs. Eris Cook of LaGrange; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Fairy Stewart 
of Morrison Crossroads; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Johnathan Heard, Judd Heard, Phillip Heard, Michael Cook, 
Vernon Lipham and Jerry Willliamson.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Sarah W. Claybrook

   (DAVISTON) Sarah W. Claybrook, 75, of Daviston, formerly of Roanoke, died 
Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at a Dadeville hospital.
   Funeral services were Sunday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. at Daviston Baptist Church with the 
Revs. Maynard Mooney and Tommy Jacobs officiating.  Burial was in the Daviston 
Cemetery.
   Survivors include three sons, Danny Parrish of Dadeville, Simon Claybrook of 
Childersburg and Benny Parrish of Daviston; one sister, Betty Ann Hamby of Daviston; 
and one brother, Clifford Meigs of Daviston.
   Alabama Funeral Homes of Dadeville was in charge of arrangements.

Louise Huey Cavender

   (NOTASULGA) Louise Huey Cavender, 70, of Notasulga died Aug. 6, 1998, at her 
residence after a short illness.
   The funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m. from Corbitt's Funeral Home in 
Tuskegee with the Rev. John Moon and Bro. Chris Mitchell officiating.  Burial was in the 
Notasulga Memory Gardens Cemetery.
   Mrs. Cavender is survived by one daughter, Melissa Lucky of Conyers, Ga.; two sons, 
Ricky Cavender of Dothan and Phillip Cavender of Auburn; two sisters, Carrie Mitchell 
and Theresa McCain, both of Wedowee; and three granddaughters.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Cavender was preceded in death by her parents, 
Mr. and Mrs. Meek Huey, and husband, Gordon Cavender.  She was retired.
   Corbitt's Funeral Home of Tuskegee was in charge of arrangements.

Everl V. 'Preach' Rollins

   (WEDOWEE)  Funeral services for Everl V. 'Preach' Rollins, 62, of Wedowee will be 
at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 19, 1998, at Lebanon Christian Church, with the Rev. Hugh 
Vines and the Rev. Earl Rollins officiating.  Burial will follow at Friendship Christian 
Church.
   Mr. Rollins died Monday, Aug. 17, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika 
following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Feb. 16, 1936, son of Levi and 
Macie Rollins.  He was retired from Candlewick Yarns and was a member of Lebanon 
Christian Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Loretta Rollins of Wedowee; one daughter, Kristian Rollins 
of Wedowee; a step-daughter, Debra M. Rollins of Roanoke; six sisters, Laverne Battit, 
Duralene Bailey, Maggie Rollins and Margaret Brown, all of Roanoke, Jeanette Spivey of 
Mellow Valley and Maxine Pike of Stovall, GA; three brothers, Mack Rollins, Hulan 
Rollins, and Thomas Rollins, all of Roanoke; three grandchildren and one great- 
grandchild.
   Mr. Rollins will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Fitzgerald Brown, Glenn Brown, Ricky Harmon, Owen Harmon, 
Reggie Bell and Andrew Channell.

James Hampton Guinn

   (OPELIKA) The funeral service for James Hampton Guinn, 47, of Opelika was Friday, 
Aug. 14, 1998, at 10 a.m. at Sanders Funeral Home, LaFayette, with the Rev. Olen 
Hutchins officiating.  Interment was in LaFayette Cemetery.
   Mr. Guinn died Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Five Points.
   He was born Dec. 8, 1951, in Chambers County and was a self-employed electrician.
   Survivors include one daughter, Suphronia Guinn of Sylacauga; one step-son, Jerry 
Batie of Sylacauga; his mother, Mary Elna Guinn of Lanett; one sisters, Yvonne 
McClellan of Lanett; one brother, Wayne Guinn of LaGrange, Ga.; one niece and 
one nephew.

OBITUARIES:

Adell Green Eley

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Adell Green Eley, 89, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Midway United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Al Reeves 
and the Rev. Lavelle Reynolds officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Eley died Thursday, Aug. 20, at her residence following a short illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Aug. 5, 1909, daughter of James 
Canary and Rosie Lee Green.  She was a homemaker and a member of Midway United 
Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Eley, who was a 
World War I and World War II veteran, and brothers, Willie Green, C. P. Green, Herman 
Green, Thurman Green, James Green and Calvin Green.
   Survivors include three sisters, Emma Green of Roanoke, Geneva Waugh of Anniston 
and Irene Cofield of Wedowee; and a host of nieces, nephews and grandnieces and 
nephews.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Midway United Methodist Church, 14093 Hwy. 
431, Wedowee, AL 36278 or to Gideon Bibles, 546 College St., Roanoke, AL 36274.
   Pallbearers were Hershey Green, Mike Green, Frank Rasbury, Doug Cofield, Pat Waugh

Anthony Poole

   (WADLEY) Anthony Poole, 90, of Wadley died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive United Methodist 
Church, with burial in the Rocky Mount Church Cemetery.  The Rev. Hollis Boykin and 
the Rev. Verlon Houston officiated.
   Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Fredrick of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Patricia 
Hutcheson of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Andrew Poole of Wadley and Anthony Poole of 
San Francisco, Calif.; three sisters, Jessie Thomas and Essie Houston of Wadley and Rena 
Jenkins of Dayton, Ohio; 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great- 
grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Mattie Pearl Willis

   (ROANOKE) Mattie Pearl Willis, 62, of Roanoke died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, 
at Randolph County Hospital.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 22, at 1 p.m. at New Harmony Baptist Church, 
LaFayette, with the Rev. William H. Trammell Sr. officiating.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery.
   Survivors include three brothers, Artis Holloway of Pittsburgh, Pa., William Frank 
Holloway of LaFayette and Beotis Holloway of Tuscaloosa; three sisters, Jimmie B. 
Trammell of Atlanta, Dollie Mae Thomas of Pittsburgh and Dorothy King of Five Points; 
one uncle, five aunts and two special cousins.
   She is preceded in death by her parents, Jim Holloway and Flora Ruth Hugley, 
and her stepfather, Rosco Hugley.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service.

Ardell S. Pearson

   (OPELIKA) Ardell S. Pearson, 85, of Opelika died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, 
at East Alabama Medical Center.
   Funeral services will be at Hopewell Baptist Church, LaFayette, on Thursday, Aug. 27, 
at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating.  Interment will be in Providence 
Cemetery.
   Surviving are four daughters, Barbara P. Evans of Gadsden, Eleanor Pearson of Auburn, 
Della P. Gates of Columbus, Ga., and Priscella P. Holley of Opelika; 24 grandchildren; 
25 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Gracie Pearson of Roanoke; one brother-in-law; 
four sons-in-law and two daughters-in-law.
   Mrs. Pearson was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Willie Pollard

   (ROANOKE) Mrs. Willie Pollard, 83, a resident of Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke, 
died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998.
   Graveside services were Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m. at East Roanoke Cemetery, 
with the Rev. Lathonia Wright officiating.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mercie Johnson Frazier of Opelika and Willie Darby of 
Hampton, Va.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Sarah Henrietta Stephens

   (HOGANSVILLE, Ga.) Sarah Henrietta Stephens, 95, of Hogansville, Ga., and a 
former resident of Heard County, Ga., died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at Franklin 
Healthcare Center.
   The funeral service was at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, in the chapel of the Claude A. 
McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville.  The Rev. Jerry Cross officiated.  
Interment was in the Ephesus Cemetery.
   Mrs. Stephens was born Dec. 10, 1902, in Heard County, daughter of the late Robert 
Lee Williams and the late Roxie Smith Williams.  She lived in Heard County most of her 
life and made her home in Hogansville for five years.  She was a member of Ephesus 
Baptist Church, was a retired lunchroom supervisor at the Ephesus School and was the 
wife of the late Mirrie Neal Stephens.
   Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Margie Shelnutt of Athens, Ga., Mrs. Earline 
Sorrells of Cedartown, Ga., Mrs. Dondra Keheley of Clayton and Mrs. Wanda Hall of 
Greenville, Texas; five sons, Vernon R. Stephens and Huell Stephens of Hogansville, 
Hollis Stephens of Burke, Va., Hiram Stephens of Roanoke and Leland Stephens of 
McDonough, Ga.; 18 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great- 
granddaughter.
   Arrangements were by Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home, Hogansville.

Mary Elizabeth Thomas

   (VILLA RICA, Ga.) Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Thomas, 85, of Villa Rica, 
Ga., formerly of Roanoke, were Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist 
Church [in Randolph Co., Alabama], with the Rev. Mickey Vaughn officiating.  Burial was 
in the church cemetery.    
   Miss Thomas died Saturday, Aug. 22, at West Star Paulding Nursing Home, Dallas, Ga.
   A Clay County native, Miss Thomas was born Feb. 19, 1913, daughter of Martin 
Manning and Laura McCain Thomas.  She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
   Survivors include three sisters, Irene Dabbs of Columbus, Ga., Annie Halsey of 
Roanoke and Myrtie Thomas of Villa Rica; and several nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Frank Griffin Henderson Sr.

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Frank Griffin Henderson Sr., 87, of Woodland 
were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Bethel East Baptist Church, with the Rev. 
Styles Akins officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Henderson died Thursday, Aug. 20, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga., 
following an extended illness.
   He was born in Carroll County, Ga., on Feb. 6, 1911, son of Roy and Lola Henderson.  
He was a retired bus driver, a farmer and a member of Bethel East Baptist Church.  He 
was preceded in death by his wife, Claudia Parmer Henderson, and a son, Frank Griffin 
Henderson Jr.
   Survivors include a daughter, Rene Yates of Woodland; four sisters, Glema Johnson of 
Woodland, Annie McDonald of Newnan, Ga., Grace Dunn of LaGrange, Ga., and Dana 
Mae Henderson of Tuscaloosa; one brother, Richard Henderson of LaGrange; three 
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tim Henderson, Tony Henderson, Jeff Henderson, Arliss East, 
Roy Lee East and Tracey Eason.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Gene Waller

   (ALBANY, Ga.) The funeral services for Eugene Waller, 69, of Albany, Ga., will be 
Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, at 11 a.m. EDT at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Albany 
with the Rev. James Bullion officiating.  Burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke, 
at 4 p.m. CDT with Dr. Doug Turner officiating.
   Mr. Waller died Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Sylvester Health Care in Albany.
   He was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Roanoke to Handley S. Waller and Ethel Waller Hedrick.  
Mr. Waller served in the army as a second lieutenant artillery officer.  He was a longtime 
antique dealer and custom framer.  Mr. Waller had resided in Albany since 1946, moving 
there from Newnan, Ga.  He was a graduate of Emory University Business School and the 
former owner of Eugene Waller Inc.  Mr. Waller was a member of the Albany Community 
Chorus and St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, where he was a member of the choir.
   Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ethel Waller Hedrick of Albany; his brother, Richard 
Waller of Albany; three step-brothers, Frank Hedrick and Dermot Hedrick of Albany and 
H. H. "June" Hedrick of Atlanta; two step-sisters, Ruth Reese of London, Ky., and Sara 
Moore of Yuma, Ariz.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
   The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at their residence at 
608 4th Ave., Albany.
   In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to St. Patrick's Episcopal 
Church.
   Mathews Oaklawn Chapel Funeral Home was [sic - is] in charge of arrangements.
