OBITUARIES:

Arene McDaniel Bowen

 (ROANOKE) Services for Arene "Irene" McDaniel Bowen, 75, of Roanoke were
Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Potash Church of God, with the Rev. Vernon
Willis officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
 Mrs. Bowen died Wednesday, Aug. 25, at University Hospital in Birmingham.
 Survivors include two daughters, Marsha Bowen and Linda Sims of Roanoke; one
brother, P. R. McDaniel of Roanoke; four grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Larry Wilson, Cody Nelson, Shane Nelson, James Watson, Mark
Moore, Frank Baldwin and Danny Nelson.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Bowen was born May 29, 1929, daughter of John
Wesley and Hattie Hale McDaniel. She was a member of Potash Church of God and a
home health assistant with Gentiva Health Services.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James William 'J.W.' Price

 (STANDING ROCK) Services for James William "J.W." Price of Standing Rock, 67,
were Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Midway Full Gospel Church, with the
Rev. Keith Benefield, the Rev. Clifford DeLee and the Rev. Sonny Kent
officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mr. Price died Sunday, Aug. 29, at his home.
 Survivors include four daughters, Nelda Myers of Valley, Sue Farmer and
Gloria "Cissy" Boatner of Standing Rock, and Kim Fomby of Hogansville, Ga.; one
son, Jimmy Price of Standing Rock; one sister-in-law, Fannie Dell Trayler of
Woodland; one brother-in-law, I. D. Harmon of Wedowee; and a special friend,
Lucile Hill of Wedowee.
 Pallbearers were grandsons Jamie Price, Billy Pike, Mike Taylor, Scott Fomby,
Jimmy Fomby, Terry Farmer and Larry Hill. Honorary pallbearers were
great-grandsons.
 Mr. Price was born Jan. 18, 1937, son of William Jefferson and Annie Mae
Loosier Price. He was a member of Standing Rock Assembly of God Church and a
security guard for Security Forces of LaGrange. Mr. Price was preceded in death
by his parents; his wife, Ora Pearl Price, and great-grandson, Zackery Fomby.
 Memorial donations may be made to East Alabama Medical Center Hospice.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Robert K. 'Bobby' Jennings

 (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Robert K. "Bobby" Jennings, 66, of Carrollton, Ga., died
Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at his residence.
 Mr. Jennings was born May 24, 1938, in Carroll County, Ga., to the late Homer
B. Jennings and Ruby Morgan Jennings. He was the retired owner and operator of
Jennings Auto Body & Frame Shop, having been in business for 36 years, and was a
member of Eastside Baptist Church.
 Survivors include his wife, Ann Bradley Jennings, to whom he was married Oct.
25, 1958; three sons, Robbie Jennings and Kent Jennings of Carrollton and Randy
Jennings of Woodland; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Dale Jennings of
Lanett.
 Services were Friday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church, with the
Rev. Gary Brown and the Rev. Charles Bradley officiating. Pallbearers were Jim
Huddleston, Pete Bearden, Glenn Kelley, David Barrow, Eddie Ryan and Lewis
Thomas. Honorary pallbearers were Denver Chandler, Connie Patterson, Donald
Hubbard, Wayne Perry, David Huckeba, Kary McNeal, Alvin Hunnicutt, John Powers,
Alford Loyd, Melvin Sigman and Kevin Green. Interment was in Carroll Memory
Gardens, with the Rev. Hubert Carroll officiating.
 Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care, P.O. Box 1136,
Carrollton, GA 30117.
 Arrangements were by Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel, Carrollton.

Bertha L. Heard

 (ROANOKE) Services for Bertha L. Heard, 77, of Roanoke were Friday, Aug. 27,
2004, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Rev. S. T. Janney, the Rev.
Frank Sledge and the Rev. Bobby Kirby officiating. Burial was in Big Springs
Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons.
 Mrs. Heard died Wednesday, Aug. 25, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
 Survivors include four daughters, Linda Holloway and Jane Taylor Pate of
Roanoke, Angela Bass of Wedowee, and Mary Wilkins of Wadley; one son, Tony Heard
of Wedowee; one sister, Alice Burner of Montague, N.J.; one brother, Alvin
Emfinger of LaGrange, Ga.; two special friends, Eddie Paul Fuller of Valley and
Opal Drake of LaGrange; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Heard was born Dec. 20, 1926, daughter of
Henry Dee Emfinger and Zula Taylor. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church
and a retired seamstress at Callaway Mills. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Delbert Leon Heard.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James Camp Abrams 

 (WOODLAND) Services for James Camp Abrams, 87, of Woodland will be Wednesday,
Sept. 1, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ronnie Puckett
and the Rev. Tony Morris officiating. Mr. Abrams will lie in state one hour
before service at the church. Burial will follow at Union Baptist Church
Cemetery.
 Mr. Abrams died Monday, Aug. 30, at Wedowee Hospital.
 Survivors include one daughter, Julie Ussery of Roanoke; three sons, Jerry
Abrams of Woodland, Russell Abrams of Roanoke, and Roger Abrams of Newell; two
sisters, Nellie O'Kelley of Anniston and Earnestine Cobb of Oxford; six
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers will be Jamie Abrams, Jason Simpson, Damon Kabetzke, Lynn Coffee,
Bobby Ezell and Thomas Murray. Honorary pallbearers will be the Senior Adult
Sunday School Class of Shiloh Baptist Church.
 Mr. Abrams was born April 25, 1917, in Clay County, son of Dalph and Ida
Geneva Camp Abrams. He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church of
Jefferson, Texas, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He served in
the U.S. Army in World War II, where he received two Bronze Star medals, a
Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal and the European-African-Middle
Eastern Campaign Medal. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clois E. Abrams,
and sister, Evelyn Abrams. The family will accept flowers or donations may be
made to Clay County Hospice or Gideons International.
 Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

William Winston Gunn

 (CUSSETA) William Winston Gunn, 40, of Cusseta died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, 
at his residence.
 Graveside services were Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery in
Lanett with the Rev. Eugene Striblin officiating.
 Mr. Gunn is survived by his parents, James Melvin "Red" and Betty Gunn of
Huguley; his maternal grandmother, Mary Elliott of Salem; one son, William
"Billy" Gunn of Thomasville, Ga.; one daughter, Jacklyn Stokley of Roanoke; four
brothers, Robert "Bud" Gunn of Little Valley, N.Y, James M. Gunn Jr. of Opelika,
George A. Gunn of Clio and Ronald Gunn of Robertsdale; and a sister, Sandra
Myhand of Covington, Ga.
 Born March 7, 1964, Mr. Gunn was a lifelong resident of the Valley area and
was a graduate of Lanett High School. He loved fishing and was an avid movie
buff. Mr. Gunn was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert and
Mary Gunn of Lanett; his maternal grandfather, John Elliott of Langdale; his
brother, James Michael Gunn; and a sister.
 Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Arvel Singleton

 (ROANOKE) Services for Arvel Singleton, 89, of Roanoke were Friday, Aug. 27,
2004, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Stanley Yarbrough
officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mr. Singleton died Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
 Survivors include his wife, Ollie Payne Singleton of Roanoke.
 A Randolph County native, Mr. Singleton was born Nov. 29, 1914, son of Lester
and Eugina Fitzgerald Singleton. He was a cabinet builder and had worked for
H&S Woodcraft in Smyrna, Ga. Mr. Singleton served in the U.S. Army in World War
II.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Vernice Smith

 (ALEXANDER CITY) Vernice Smith, 55, of Alexander City died Friday, Aug. 27,
2004, at Russell Medical Center, Alexander City.
 Services will be Friday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. at Leander Baptist Church,
Daviston, with the Rev. Tim Heard and the Rev. Dr. E. L. Hunter officiating. 
Burial will be in the church cemetery
 Survivors include her son, Edward L. Smith of Wellington, Kansas; two
daughters, LaKisha A. Smith and Crystal A. Smith of Wadley; special nephew,
Dwight Staples; special niece, Toni R. Jones and special friend, Larry Farizer. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Smith Jr.
 Viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke, from 10 a.m.
until 6 p.m. on Thursday. The body will be placed in the church one hour before
services.

Willie Clifford Grier

 (ROANOKE) Willie Clifford Grier, 62, of Roanoke died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004,
at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
 Services will be Thursday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. at East Roanoke Church of God,
with Pastor Timothy Wright officiating. Interment will be in Skyview Memorial
Gardens.
 The family will receive friends at Roanoke Funeral Home on Wednesday from
noon to 6 p.m. Mr. Grier will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to
services on Thursday.
 Mr. Grier is survived by his wife, Jimmie Dora Grier of Roanoke; a son,
Willie Wilford Grier of Roanoke; three sisters, Karen Foster and Linda Lynch of
Roanoke and Joyce Lynch of New York, N.Y.; three brothers, Melvin Lynch of
LaGrange, Ga., Larry Lynch of Atlanta, and Eisenhower Lynch of Roanoke; four
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
 For many years Mr. Grier sang with his family's group, the Lynch Travelers of
Roanoke.
 Roanoke Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.

Bruell Elton Benefield

 (WEDOWEE) Services for Bruell Elton Benefield, 83, of Wedowee were Sunday,
Sept. 5, 2004, at 2 p.m. at West Broad Street Church of Christ, with Bro. Dwight
Thomas officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
 Mr. Benefield died Friday, Sept. 3, at Wedowee Hospital.
 Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Luree Holmes Benefield of Wedowee; a
daughter, Deborah McManus of Woodland; and two grandchildren.
 Nephews served as pallbearers and the staff of Southern Ambulance Transport
were honorary pallbearers.
 Mr. Benefield was a native of Randolph County, born July 1, 1921, son of
Charles Swan Benefield and Edna Alaska Poole Benefield. He had worked as an
insurance salesman with Independent Life Insurance Company and on construction
at the R.L. Harris Dam. He was an avid farmer and was in the Army during World
War II. He was a member of West Broad Street Church of Christ. He was preceded
in death by his parents, a sister, Louise Edwards; and two brothers, Harold
Benefield and Harvey Benefield.
 Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Resa Rice Pollard

 (LANETT) Resa Rice Pollard, 89, of Lanett died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, 
at her residence.
 Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m. at McCarthy Funeral Home
in West Point, Ga., with the Rev. Gerald Sykes officiating. Burial followed at
Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.
 She is survived by her son, David Rice of Lanett; three grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and her sister, Polly Hogg of Columbus, Ga.
 Mrs. Pollard was born Aug. 18, 1915, in Randolph County, the daughter of the
late Lillie Mae Wallace Treadwell and Bruce Treadwell. She was a retired
employee of Charter Communications, formerly Sammons Communications, with 30
years of service. Mrs. Pollard was an avid flower gardener and loved her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was of the Baptist faith.
 Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.
 Arrangements were by McCarthy Funeral Home, West Point.

 (WADLEY) Services for Mary McKissic, 39, of Wadley died Thursday, 
Sept. 2, 2004, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
 Services were Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. at Pine Flat Primitive Baptist
Church, Wedowee, with Elder Thomas Knight officiating. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
 Survivors include her mother, Ervis McKissic of Wedowee; two sons, Crushun
McKissic of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Cedric McKissic of Birmingham.; five
brothers, John Wesley McKissic of St. Marys, Md., James McKissic of Wadley,
Harold McKissic of Maryland, and Jack McKissic Jr. and Marvin McKissic, of
Wedowee; and four sisters, Betty Lowe and Icie Langston of Wadley, Shirley
Knight of Wedowee and Jacqueline McKissic of Maryland. She was preceded in
death by a daughter, Shequanna McKissic.
 Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Lillian Jacobs

 (TRION, Ga.) Lillian Jacobs of Trion, Ga., died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, 
in Rome, Ga.
 Mrs. Jacobs, a native of Wadley, was the daughter of Franklin Jefferson and
Bertha Stodghill Duffey. She was a homemaker and a member of Trion First
Baptist Church.
 Graveside services were at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at Shadowlawn Cemetery
with the Rev. Olin McClain officiating. Contributions may be made to the
Alzheimer's Association or Trion First Baptist Church.
 Survivors, include a daughter-in-law, Peggy Jacobs of Trion; four
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Haugen of Apopka,
Fla., and Glenda Schwal of Pensacola, Fla.
 She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Howard Jacobs Sr.; two sons,
Donald Jefferson Jacobs and Henry Howard Jacobs Jr.

Lossie McCowan Tolbert

 (LAFAYETTE) Lossie McCowan Tolbert, 81, of LaFayette died Sunday, Aug. 29,
2004, at her residence.
 Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. CDT at Ozias Baptist
Church in Camp Hill with the Rev. O. C. Stiggers officiating. Burial followed
at Sardis Cemetery in Camp Hill.
 Mrs. Tolbert is survived by two sons, G. W. Tolbert of Camp Hill and James
Tolbert of LaFayette; five daughters, Mae Doris Ross of Camp Hill, Marsha Pullen
of Roanoke and Joann Tolbert, Barbara Tolbert and Annie Tolbert Hugley, all of
LaFayette; one sister, Maudie Hines of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one sister-in-law; 
30 grandchildren , 23 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and a
host of friends.
 Mrs. Tolbert was a long-time member of Ozias Baptist Church in Camp Hill. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. E. Tolbert; three sons, Jessie
Donald, William and Lemmie; and one daughter, Betty.
 Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Carolyn Alsabrook

 (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Carolyn Alsabrook, 61, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday, 
Aug. 31, 2004, at her home.
 Mrs. Alsabrook, born May 17, 1943, in LaGrange, was the daughter of the late
Nathan and Evelyn Shirey Lee. She was a lifetime area resident and was the
office manager for West Georgia Paint and Body Shop. She was Baptist by faith.
 Survivors include her husband of 18 years, Fred Alsabrook; daughter, Trade
Campbell; son, Tim Wilkerson, all of LaGrange; stepchildren, Angie Bailey and
Randy Alsabrook, both of Roanoke, and Kathy Barintine of LaGrange; nine
grandchildren; and three brothers, Clarence Lee, Ray Lee and Ernest Lee, all of
LaGrange.
 Graveside services were Thursday, Sept. 2, at 11 a.m. in Restlawn Memory
Gardens with the Rev. Anthony Hovey officiating.
 Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Ruby Higgins

 (LAFAYETTE) Ruby Higgins, 92, of LaFayette died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, 
at her residence.
 Graveside services were at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, with interment in
LaFayette City Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Hand and the Rev. Tom Leverett
officiated.
 Survivors include a daughter, Jane Keller of Greenville, N.C.; a son, Joseph
Higgins of LaFayette; two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
 Mrs. Higgins was born in Randolph County on Sept. 15, 1911, daughter of the
late Robert Lee and Emma Gamble Bradshaw. She also was preceded in death by her
husband, Frank Higgins. She and her husband operated Higgins Supply Co. in
LaFayette for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of
LaFayette.
 Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Julia Chapman Batchelder

 (GALT, Calif.) Services for Julia Chapman Batchelder, 64, of Galt, Calif.,
formerly of Oxford, were at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at Miller Funeral
Home in Oxford with the Rev. Burgess Austin officiating.
 Mrs. Batchelder died Thursday, Aug. 26, at her home.
 Survivors include a son and his wife, Steven A. Parks of Galt; her mother,
Lonnie Mae Chapman of Oxford; four sisters, Hester Sims of Wedowee, Polly
Davidson and Frances Nelson of Heflin, and Wanda Archuletta of Arkansas; and
several nieces and nephews.
 Mrs. Batchelder had lived in California the past three years. She was a
member of Southside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Bob Batchelder; and her father, James Floyd Chapman.
 Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made to Southside Baptist
Church, or the American Cancer Society.

Mary E. Twilley

 (ONEONTA) Services for Mary E. Twilley, 82, of Oneonta, formerly of
Lineville, will be Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Clay
County Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Coquett officiating. Burial will follow
in Clay County Memory Gardens.
 Mrs. Twilley died Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Beverly Health Care in Oneonta.
 She was a native of Clay County, where she had lived until last year. She
was a homemaker and member of Lineville Baptist Church. She was preceded in
death by her husband, W. W. Twilley, and a son, Ralph Twilley.
 She is survived by a daughter, Carol Ann Dewberry and son-in-law, Ronald
Dewberry of Oneonta, formerly of Roanoke; a son, David Twilley and
daughter-in-law, Jean Twilley of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
 Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Robertson, Buster Robertson, Cleon
McDonald, Benny Dewberry, Rick Whatley and Mark Griffin.
 The family will receive friends Friday beginning at 1 p.m. until service time.
 Arrangements are by Clay County Funeral Home.

Roger Victor Thibodeau

 (ROANOKE) Services for Roger Victor Thibodeau, 70, of Roanoke, formerly of
Medway, Mass., will be Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum
Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Harold Bonner and Gary Baugh officiating. Burial
will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
 The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on
Wednesday, Sept. 15.
 Mr. Thibodeau died Monday, Sept. 13, at West Georgia Medical Center in
LaGrange.
 Survivors include his wife, Joan Fay Thibodeau of Roanoke; one son, David S.
Thibodeau of Fairfield, Ohio; a granddaughter; one sister, Teresa Iannuzzi of
Fitchburg, Mass.; one brother, Joseph Thibodeau of Tucson, Ariz.; several
nieces, nephews and god-children[.]
 A Massachusetts native, Mr. Thibodeau was born May 19, 1934, son of Arthur
and Alma Gaudet Thibodeau. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War; a member of
the Tin Can Sailors; an ordained minister with One Bread Ministries; a member of
the American Legion Post 53; and a chaplain with Randolph County Sheriff's
Auxiliary and Roanoke Police Department. He had been employed as a designer
with Amoco Fabrics & Fibers.
 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Handley Avenue Church of God
building fund.
 Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Pearl Tidwell Harris

 (WADLEY) Services for Pearl Tidwell Harris, 83, of Wadley were Saturday, 
Aug. 28, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church (South) with the Revs. 
Johnny Foster, Zenus Windsor and Richie Farrow officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
 Mrs. Harris died Thursday, Aug. 26, at Clay County Nursing Home.
 She was born in Randolph County but was a lifelong resident of Clay County. 
She was former owner of Harris's Store on Hwy. 77 South, was a charter member of
the Women's Missionary Union, and was the oldest living member of Mt. Olive
Baptist Church.
 She is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Vaughn of Wadley, one son, Jack
Harris of Wadley; three sisters, Shirley Estes of Abanda, Stella Sewell of
Birmingham and Mildred Abernathy of Alexander City; two brothers, J. C. Tidwell
of Pensacola, Fla., and Max Tidwell of Alexander City; three grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brun
"Bruner" Harris; and one brother, Wilburn Tidwell.
 Pallbearers were John Harris, Greg Mask, Joe Mask, Lamar Evans, Ed Estes and
Paul Wilkerson.

 (ROANOKE) Services for Lucille Mae Potts, 98, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
Sept. 14, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Zion Congregational Christian Church, with 
the Revs. Harold Bonner and Cecil Halsey officiating. Burial was in the 
adjoining cemetery.
 Mrs. Potts died Sunday, Sept. 12, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
 Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Potts Walker of Montgomery; a sister,

and Della Tyson Morris. She was a member of Mt. Zion Congregational Christian
Church and had retired from Palm Beach Company. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Howard Potts; a son, Speedie Potts; and a daughter, Rudine Green.

Audrey Brooks

 (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Audrey Brooks, 92, of LaGrange, Ga., died Friday, Sept. 10,
2004, at Lilburn Health & Rehabilitation.
 Mrs. Brooks, born Aug. 6, 1912, in Randolph County, was the daughter of the
late Benjamin and Ellen Knight Fetner. She had lived in LaGrange since 1925,
retired from the Elm City Plant of Milliken & Co. after 35 years. She had been
a member of Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church since 1928.
 Survivors include a daughter, Marcelene May of Duluth, Ga.; a son, Jarrell
Reed Brooks of Buford, Ga.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and
three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
 Graveside services were at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, in Shadowlawn Cemetery
with the Rev. Paul Ott officiating.

 (ROANOKE) Services for Laura Brown Darbie, 41, of Roanoke were Saturday,

 Mrs. Darbie died Thursday, Sept. 9, at her home.
 Survivors include one son, Taylor Darbie of Roanoke; her parents, Judson and
Johnnie Brown of Roanoke; one sister, Jennifer Brown of Tampa, Fla.; and one
brother, Matthew Brown of Birmingham.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Darbie was born Dec. 21, 1962, daughter of
Calvin Judson and Johnnie Wallis Brown. She was a member of Big Springs Baptist
Church. Mrs. Darbie was preceded in death by a son, John Judson Darbie.

Courtney Faye Kemmerlin

 (CENTRALHATCHEE, Ga.) Courtney Faye Kemmerlin, 19, of Centralhatchee, Ga.,
died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at her home.
 Services were Monday, Aug. 28, at 4 p.m. at Centralhatchee Baptist Church
with the Rev. Doug Bingham and Lee Hollis officiating. Remarks were by
classmates Tiffany Stallings and Bonnie Hunter, and ACC SEL Andria R. Price of
the U.S. Navy made remarks and presented her mother with the U.S. flag. Robbin
Worley, one of Miss Kemmerlin's former teachers, also spoke. Rita Loftin, Jean
Duke and Leesa Cothran offered music selections.
 Serving as pallbearers were Jamie Worley, Scott Worley, Steve Martin, Brian
Lasseter, Paul Gay and Zachary Arrington. Members of Miss Kemmerlin's sorority
and friends flanked the path to the cemetery holding pink and lavender balloons. 
At the end of the interment, the balloons were released.
 Miss Kemmerlin was born in Troup County, Ga., on April 11, 1985, to
Stephanie Wilson Kemmerlin Hyatt and Archie Lewis "Tripp" Kemmerlin III. 
Courtney was a 2003 honor graduate of Heard County Comprehensive High School in
Franklin, Ga., and was voted by her classmates as "most likely to succeed." In
high school she was active in the Academic Bowl, BETA, FBLA, Spanish Club and
was a varsity cheerleader. At the University of Georgia, she became a member of
Delta Phi sorority. She was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church in Ranburne
and also was active at Centralhatchee Baptist Church. Courtney left UGA to
pursue a career in the U.S. Navy.
 Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Stephanie and Mart Hyatt of
Centralhatchee; father and stepmother, Tripp and Lisa Kemmerlin of Heflin;
grandparents, Perry and Faye Wilson of Roanoke, Archie and Doris Kemmerlin of
Woodland and Joy Hyatt and Sandra Lott, both of Heard County; one sister, Haley
Joy Hyatt of Centralhatchee; two brothers, Jayme McCormick and Kasey Kemmerlin
of Heflin; and a host of friends.

Wadley; a sister, Willie Mae Bledsoe of Lancaster, Texas; 10 grandchildren and
14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Lonnie
Bledsoe, Roosevelt Bledsoe, Greene Bledsoe and Jake Bledsoe; and a sister, Rosa
Lee Godfrey.

 (LAFAYETTE) Willie Frank Burton, 58, of LaFayette died Saturday, Sept. 4,
2004, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.

Church in Penton with the Rev. Justin Freeman officiating. Burial followed in
Friendship Baptist #2 Cemetery.
 Mr. Burton is survived by his wife, Annie Hester Burton of LaFayette; five
sons, James Frank Burton of Roanoke, Willie Frank Pitts and Derrick Burton of
LaFayette, Gerald Burton of Tuscaloosa and Willie Joe Pitts of Five Points; two
brothers, John Eddie Burton and Bomer Burton of LaFayette; two sisters, Annie
Maude Bailey of LaFayette and Jean Daniel of Valley; and 10 grandchildren.
 Mr. Burton was born in Chambers County Sept. 14, 1945.

Philip G. Bozeman

 (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Philip G. Bozeman, 84, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday, Sept.
7, 2004, at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation.
 Mr. Bozeman, born Dec. 25, 1919, in Randolph County, was the son of the late
James and Margaret Suddath Bozeman. He had lived in Troup County, Ga., most of
his life and was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from the Dixie
Division of West Point Pepperell Manufacturing Company. He was Baptist and a
member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
 Survivors include two sons, Bobby Bozeman of LaGrange and Kenneth Bozeman of
Cusseta; three sisters, Margaret Brandenburg and Myrtie Lee Cooper of Opelika
and Vinny Landers of LaGrange; a brother, James Bozeman of LaGrange; six
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.
 Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in the chapel of Claude A.
McKibben and Sons Funeral Home. Burial was in New Springs Congregational
Methodist Church Cemetery in Heard County, Ga.

Ruby Hooten Daniel

 (COVINGTON, Ga.) Ruby H. Daniel, 90, of Covington, Ga., died Sunday, Sept. 5,
2004, at Covington Manor Nursing Home.
 Mrs. Daniel, daughter of the late Dru Moses and Sarah Elizabeth Meacham
Hooten, was a native of Randolph County and had lived in Covington for the past
two years.
 Mrs. Daniel, formerly of LaGrange, attended Dunson Baptist Church and was
employed by Kex Mill. Her hobbies were quilting, baking cakes, embroidery and
working crossword puzzles.
 Surviving are her daughter, Jean Gray of Stockton, Calif., and Martha
Reynolds of Denver, Colo.; a son, Thomas Daniel of Virginia; 13 grandchildren; a
number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sarah
Edge of Monroe, Pa. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Lewis, and
a son, Jakie Daniel.
 Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the chapel of Caldwell
& Cowan Funeral Home in Covington with the Rev. Russell McKee officiating. 
Interment will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens in LaGrange.

Talton Shaw

 (VALLEY) Talton Shaw, 85, of Valley died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Emory
Hospital in Atlanta.
 Funeral services were Thursday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. at Langdale United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Thompson officiating. Burial followed in
Langdale Cemetery.
 Mr. Shaw is survived by one daughter, Susan Jensen of Woodstock, Ga.; one
sister, Mary Shaw of Shawmut; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
 Born May 4, 1919, in Randolph County, Mr. Shaw was the son of the late
Elizabeth Reese Shaw and Talton Augustie Shaw Sr. He was a veteran of World War
II, where he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. He had received
the Purple Heart Medal for service in ground operations in France. Mr. Shaw was
the retired postmaster of the Langdale Post Office. He was an active member of
Langdale United Methodist Church, where he served on the official board, taught
Sunday school and was a member of the Fellodian Class. He was preceded in death
by his wives, Thelma Canady Shaw and Mary Templeton Shaw.
 The family respectfully declines the honor of flowers and asks that memorials
be made to the Langdale United Methodist Church in his memory.

 (ROANOKE) Services for Joseph Edward "Joe" Bishop, 63, of Roanoke were at 11

 Mr. Bishop died Wednesday, Sept. 8, at his home.
 Survivors include two daughters, Kelli Hallmark Of Talladega and Mandy Grace
of Roanoke; a son, Robbie Bishop of Rome, Ga.; two sisters, Louise Forsythe of
Eastaboga and Glenda Steeley of Douglasville, Ga.; two brothers, Clarence "Big
Head" Bishop and Scotty Bishop of Talladega; and six grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Thad Bishop, Herbie Bishop, Matt Bishop, Bill Steeley Jr.,
Jeff Cooper and Tom Hayden.
 Mr. Bishop, a Talladega native and former Cedar Bluff resident, had lived in
Roanoke the past 10 years. He owned Bishop Auto Mart in Rome and was president
of the Alabama Sportsman Hunting Reserve. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Faye Bishop; his parents, Marvin and Alvie Bishop, and two sisters, Sue
Patterson and Katherine Gravette.

Clemintine Benefield

 (ROANOKE) Services for Clemintine Benefield, 87, of Roanoke will be Thursday,
Sept. 23, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gary
Baugh officiating and the eulogy by Keith Minix. Burial will follow at
Friendship Christian Church Cemetery.
 The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on
Wednesday.
 Mrs. Benefield died Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Randolph Medical Center.
 Survivors include four daughters, Alice Benefield, Mary Lois Moore, Lorena
Minix and Catherine Benefield, all of Roanoke; two sons, Earl Benefield of Union
Springs and David Benefield of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers will be Keith Minix, Robert Benefield, Dusty Moore, J. R. Moore,
Roy Benefield and Winston Benefield. Richard Laird will serve as honorary
pallbearer.
 A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Benefield was born Jan. 23, 1917,
in Cleburne County, daughter of Charlie and Mary Triplett Garrison. She was a
homemaker and a member of Handley Avenue Church of God.

2004, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.

Roanoke. Officiating ministers were the Rev. R. L. Heflin, the Rev. William
Phillips and the Rev. Calvin Trammell. Interment was in the Mt. Pisgah
Cemetery.
 Mr. Williams is survived by five sisters, Ethel Cannon, Carrie L. Paige,
Annie Dora Trammell and Christine Trammell of Roanoke and Winnie L. Gilliam of
Tacoma, Wash.; and one brother, Willie H. Williams of Atlanta.

Robert 'Bob' Morgan Burnside

 (LANETT) Robert Morgan Burnside, 69, of Lanett died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004,
at Lanier Memorial Hospital.
 A memorial celebration was held at 11 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, at Lanett First
United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Joyce Akridge, Donnie Erwin-Brown and
Lenox Mallory officiating.
 Mr. Burnside is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marjorie Ann Key Burnside;
his son, Jeff Burnside of Pelham; his daughter, Missy Smith of Lanett; his
brother, Tommy Burnside of Wedowee; his sisters, Rita Arther of Gadsden and
Betty McMakin of Boerne, Texas; four grandchildren; and a host of nieces and
nephews.
 Born July 28, 1935, in Collinsville, Mr. Burnside was the son of the late
Thomas P. and Opal J. Burnside. He was an active member of Lanett First United
Methodist Church, where he served in the Chancel Choir, taught Sunday school,
was on the Administrative Board, Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, Men's Club,
Meals-on-Wheels, and chairman of the board of the initial Innerfaith Food
Closet. His community activities also include being a member and president of
the Lanett Kiwanis Club , an adult leader of Junior Achievement, a Cub Scout
leader, and a member and president of Lanett High School Band Boosters. He was
a former employee of the Lanett Bleachery and Dye Works and a retired employee
of First National Bank.
 In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to
Lanett First United Methodist Church.

 (GRAHAM) Leo Cosper, 69, of 8875 County Road 51, Graham, died Sunday, Sept.
19, 2004, in Carraway Methodist Hospital, Birmingham.
 Mr. Cosper was born in Cleburne County March 6, 1935, son of the late Willie
G. and Ada Bold Cosper. Mr. Cosper was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church
and was a retired employee of Sewell's.
 In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son Jamie Lee Cosper,
stepmother Desser Cosper, sisters, Doris McCain and Ina Morgan, and brothers
Elmer Cosper and Mabrey Cosper.
 Survivors include his wife, Doris Breed Cosper of Graham; a son, Randy Cosper
of Graham; two sisters, Barbara Thomason of Anniston and Pearl Hill of
Hennessey, Okla.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

born Dec. 9, 1918, daughter of A. J. and Della Kellum Bennett. She was a

her husband, William Hoyt Lacy; a son, David Glendon "Glen" Lacy; a brother,
Gordon Bennett; and a sister, Amber Parrish.

 (NEWELL) Graveside services for Naomi S. Rice, 84, of Newell were Monday,

 Mrs. Rice died Saturday, Sept. 18, at her residence following an extended
illness.

Rice of Newell; and three grandchildren.

Pittman; and two brothers.

Ricky Chambliss, Clarence Vinson and Donny Oliver.

Marcia Catherine Benford

 (ROANOKE) Services for Marcia Catherine Benford, 90, of Roanoke will be
Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Antioch Congregational Christian
Church. Mrs. Benford will lie in state one hour before the service at the
church. The Rev. Anthony Herren and the Rev. Floyd Carmack will officiate. 
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
 Mrs. Benford died Saturday, Sept. 25, at East Alabama Medical Center,
Opelika.
 Survivors include two sons, Benjamin Benford of Tuskegee and Harold Frank
Benford of Manassas, Va.; and two grandchildren.
 Pallbearers will be Frank Royston, Billy Royston, Wayne Adcock, Mike Coker,
David Meddick and Sam Shelnutt.
 Mrs. Benford was born Sept. 23, 1914, daughter of Mack and Katherine Royston
Hamlin. She was a member of Antioch Congregational Christian Church and worked
in the insurance department of Randolph County Hospital. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Harold Roswell Benford.

 (ROANOKE) Services for Ronald Joe Shelnutt, 48, of Roanoke were Tuesday,
Sept. 28, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Bro. Edward Herren
and Bro. Bill Prince Sr. officiating. Burial was at Liberty Grove Methodist
Church Cemetery.
 Mr. Shelnutt died Monday, Sept. 27, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
 Survivors include three sisters, Abigail Strain and Sara Williamson of
Roanoke and Carolyn Johnson of Valley; four brothers, Bonnie Shelnutt, Barrett
Shelnutt, Edward Shelnutt and William Shelnutt of Roanoke; and several nieces
and nephews.
 Pallbearers were Barrett Shelnutt, Edward Shelnutt, Lendle Williamson, Junior
Johnson, Kevin Johnson and Andy Gray.
 Mr. Shelnutt was born Nov. 9, 1955, son of Corbin Lee and Lizzie Key
Shelnutt. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Wylie
Shelnutt.

 (DELTA) Services for Jettie Young Davis, 69, of Delta will be at 2 p.m.

 Mrs. Davis died Monday, Sept. 27, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
 Survivors include three daughters, Edna J. Davis, Joan Davis and Margaret J.
Davis of Delta; a son, Alan Davis of Delta; three sisters, Nettie Deemer of
Oxford, Nelsie Harris of Heflin and Jeanie Hanson of Anniston; two brothers,
Clifford Young of Anniston and A. V. Young of Hollis Crossroads; six
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
 Mrs. Davis, a Cleburne County native and longtime Randolph County resident,
was a member of Church of God. She was a homemaker.

Lois Luker Clark

 (DELTA) Services for Lois Luker Clark, 82, of Delta were at 2 p.m. Tuesday,
Sept. 28, 2004, at Mount Moriah Baptist Church with the Revs. Lewis P. Bowen,
Pete Haynes, Ted Embry, Curtis Beculhimer and Jerry Edge officiating. Burial
was in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville in
charge.
 Mrs. Clark died Sunday, Sept. 26, at Lineville Health and Rehabilitation
Center.
 Survivors include her husband, Willard Clark; a daughter, Carole Johnson of
Delta; three sons, Buddy Clark of Heflin, Steve Clark of Delta and Paul Clark of
Arab; a brother, Leon Luker of Heflin; 7 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren,
and six great-great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were grandsons, Greg Clark, Rodney Clark, Stephen Johnson,
Christopher Clark, Kevin Clark, Michael Clark and Keith Clarke. Honorary
pallbearers will be [were] deacons of Mount Moriah Baptist Church and her
grandsons-in-law.
 Mrs. Clark, a Clay County native and former Calhoun and Randolph County
resident, was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church. She sang in the choir
and was church treasurer for many years. She was a homemaker. She was preceded
in death by her parents, two brothers, a daughter, a grandson and a
great-granddaughter.

Jack Neal

 (LINEVILLE) Services for Jack Neal, 64, of Lineville were at 3 p.m. Sunday,
Sept. 26, 2004, at New Hope West Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy East and
Claude Bennett officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
 Mr. Neal died Thursday, Sept. 23, at his home.
 Survivors include his former wife, Carol Eno Neal; a daughter, Elaine Neal
Little of Lineville; two sons, James Blake Neal and Thomas Daryl Neal of
Lineville; and five grandchildren.
 Mr. Neal, a Calhoun County native and former Roanoke resident, had lived in
Clay County six years. He was Baptist. An Air Force veteran, he had been
self-employed in the amusement business, retail sales, the automotive industry
and operated Crazy Jacks Fireworks.
 Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made to the Jack Neal
Memorial Fund at First State Bank in Lineville.

 (WOODLAND) Services for Kathleen Anderson Messer, 80, of Woodland were
Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Ava United Methodist Church, with the Rev.
Mike Samuels officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

 Mrs. Messer died Saturday, Sept. 25, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
 Survivors include a son, Larry Messer of Wedowee; one grandson; one
granddaughter; one great-grandson; three step-grandsons; seven
step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Sara Strain of Woodland, Betty Haynes of
Anniston, Hazel Johnson of Atlanta and Annette Miller of Carrollton, Ga.; and
two brothers, Ted Anderson of Roswell, Ga., and John Anderson of Bowdon, Ga.
 Pallbearers were Terry Messer, Danny Strain, Jimmy Walker, John Seegar,
Howard Calhoun, Tommy Messer, Don Green and Michael Haynes.
 Mrs. Messer was a native of Randolph County, born June 6, 1924, daughter of
Charles Herman Anderson and Ermis Tomlinson Anderson. She was a member of Ava
United Methodist Church and had been employed as a bookkeeper. She was preceded
in death by her husband, W. Henderson Messer; one son, Timothy Wayne Messer; one
sister, Brooksie Austin; and four brothers, Marion, Joe, Jerry and Van Anderson.

 (ROANOKE) Services for Wallace Ledford Williamson Sr., 61, of Roanoke were

 Mr. Williamson died Saturday, Sept. 25, at Erlanger Health Systems in
Chattanooga, Tenn.
 Survivors include his wife, Myra Keeble Williamson; four daughters, Lynne
Anne Kelly of Odenville, Lena Sands of Del Rio, Texas, Michelle French of
Atlanta and Elizabeth Powell of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; two sons, Wallace L.
Williamson Jr. of Roanoke and Richard French of Atlanta; one sister, Curtis Jane
Burns of Wedowee; two brothers, Danny Williamson of Birmingham and Hal
Williamson of Hogansville, Ga.; and 13 grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Z. O. Williamson, Jimmy Chaffin, Bill Williamson, Joby
Burns, Josh Burns and Heath Johnson.
 Mr. Williamson was born Nov. 12, 1942, son of William Curtis and Oletha
Chaffin Williamson. He was a member of Roanoke First Baptist Church and was
senior project engineer for Spectrum Tele-Communications.

Heart Association.

 (ROANOKE) Services for Bertha Benefield Green, 87, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m.

 Mrs. Green is survived by two sisters, Myrtice B. Phillips and Minnie Lee

and Jeff Pollard.
 Mrs. Green was born May 5, 1917, daughter of John David and Elsie Pool
Benefield. She was a member of Midway Methodist Church and a homemaker. The

 (ROANOKE) Services for Joseph Andrew Gaines Jr., 73, of Roanoke were Sunday,

 Mr. Gaines died Friday, Sept. 24, at Randolph Medical Center Roanoke.
 Survivors include one sister, Joyce Gaines Wise of Emerson, Ga.; and two
brothers, Frank Gaines of Acworth, Ga., and John Gaines of Killen, Texas.
 Mr. Gaines was born Oct. 7, 1930, son of Joseph Andrew and Celia Christopher
Gaines. He was a former resident of Cartersville, Ga., and a self-employed
brick mason.

Dorothy 'Dot' K. Akins

 (LANETT) Dorothy "Dot" K. Akins, 73, of Lanett died Wednesday, Sept. 22,
2004, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
 Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Stiles Akins officiating. Burial followed in Five Points
Belcher Cemetery in Five Points.
 Mrs. Akins is survived by four daughters, Sandra Camp, Desiree Akins and
Jennifer Davis of Lanett and Mary Ann McCarthy of Childersburg; three sons,
Tracy Akins and Odell Akins of Lanett and Doyle Akins of Standing Rock; two
brothers, James Kirby of Five Points and Harry Kirby of Missouri; one sister,
Nancy Foster of Valley; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
 Born Sept. 15, 1931, in Randolph County, Mrs. Akins was a member of the
Baptist Church.

Billy Joe Williams

 (LAFAYETTE) Billy Joe Williams, 67, of LaFayette died Thursday, Sept. 23,
2004, at Bethany House in Auburn.
 Mr. Williams was born in Escambia County July 15, 1937. He was retired from
West Point Stevens in Opelika after 31 years of service and was a member of
LaFayette Heights Church of LaFayette.
 Services were at Rock Springs Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25,
with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Steve Golden, the Rev. Charles
Whitson and Mr. Gene Lamb officiated.
 Surviving are his wife, Louise Williams of LaFayette; five children, James
Williams and Gene Williams of LaFayette, Wanda Mathis of West Point, Ga., Susan
McClurg of Wadley and Jeff Williams of Lanett; four sisters; one brother; and 
12 grandchildren.		
 Memorial donations may be made to Bethany House Hospice in Auburn.

Annie L. Hill

 (ROANOKE) Annie L. Hill, 97, of 615 Border St., Roanoke, died Friday, Sept.
24, 2004, at her home.
 Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills Baptist Church,
with the Rev. Jerome Fannin and the Rev. Gilbert Staples officiating. Interment
will be in East Roanoke Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one
hour before services.
 Surviving are two daughters, Harriet Shears of Roanoke and Ruby Cooper-McGhee
of Birmingham; a son, Silus Leon Hill of Roanoke; a stepson, the Rev. Alfred
Hill Sr. of Roanoke; 24 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren,
great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

 (ROANOKE) Graveside services for C. J. Holder Jr., 86, of Roanoke were at

 Mr. Holder died Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Bill Nichols Veterans Home,
Alexander City.
 Mr. Holder is survived by one sister, Gladys Holder Cavender of Fort Worth,
Texas, and several nieces and nephews.
 Mr. Holder was born July 21, 1918, son of Carl James and Maude Lee Traylor
Holder. He was a member of Friendship Christian Church, a World War II veteran
in the U.S. Navy, and a self-employed painter.

Veterans Home.

 (ROCK MILLS) Arthur Gerald Lee, 57, of Rock Mills died Tuesday, Sept. 28,
2004. He was born Oct. 16, 1946.
 Surviving are his wife, Audrey Frances Lee; five children, Denise Morris of
Standing Rock, Arthur Earl Lee of Chattanooga, Tenn., Stella Frances Lee of
Williamson, Ga., Beverly Michelle Lee of LaGrange, Ga., and Bruce Alan Bryant of
Fayetteville, Ga.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son,
Robert Allen Lee.

Smith; three sisters, Kathy Freeman of Ranburne, Edith Steeley of Roanoke and
Betty Baker of Douglasville, Ga.; five brothers, Alvin Smith and James Ray Smith
of Roanoke, and Waymon Smith, Emmitt Smith and Larry Smith of Woodland; and
three grandchildren.

 A Randolph County native, Mr. Smith was born May 13, 1946, son of James O.
and Sara L. Baldwin Smith. He was a self-employed logger. He was preceded in
death by a daughter, Tammy Sue Smith; his father, James O. Smith; and a brother,
Calvin Smith.
