OBITUARIES:

Thomas Watson

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Thomas Watson, 71, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
May 1, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. 
William Phillips and Rev. Terry Magby officiating.
   Mr. Watson died Tuesday, April 27, at his residence.
   Mr. Watson was a retiree of the textile industry, having worked at both the Handley 
Textile Mills, formerly of Roanoke, and Miliken Corporation of LaGrange, Ga.  He was 
a faith deacon of Saint Paul Baptist Church in Roanoke.
   Survivors include his wife, Lillian Watson of Roanoke; four sons, Robert Joiner, 
Thomas Watson Jr. and Sanford Watson of Roanoke and Brad Watson of Huntsville; five 
daughters, Jacquelyn Rudd of Memphis, Tenn., Barbara Trammell of Roanoke, Rebecca 
Diane Joseph of Houston, Texas, Jean Joiner of Opelika and Linda Jean Nelson of 
Winston-Salem, N.C.; a brother, Paul Watson of Montgomery; four sisters, Marie 
McMurray of Century, Fla., Mary S. Tatum and Antonia Bell of Roanoke and Gloria 
Powell of Detroit, Mich.; and 13 grandchildren.  Mr. Watson was preceded in death by his 
parents, James Watson Sr. and Ida Mae Watson; a daughter, Sarah Watson; a sister, 
Bernele Walker; and a brother, James Watson Jr.
   In lieu of flowers, the Watson family requests that donations be made to the American 
Cancer Society.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Pearlie Gray

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Pearlie Gray, 72, of Wedowee were at 2 p.m. Friday, 
April 30, 1999, at Mt. Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. James Cavender and Dale 
Jones officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Gray died Wednesday, April 28, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born June 7, 1926, daughter of 
Minyard and Sular Harmon Holloway.  She had been employed with Higgins Slacks in 
Lineville, and was a member of Mt. Grove Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by 
a sister, Lois Hampton, and a brother, Floyd Holloway.
   Survivors include three sons, Thomas Gray of Florida and James Gray and Roger Gray 
of Wedowee; one brother Joe Holloway of Wedowee; nine grandchildren and eight 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jimmy Hawthorne, Basil Mitchell, Mike Spradlin, Ben Milam, Frankie 
Dewberry and Jamie Gray.  Honorary pallbearer was Roger Gray.
   Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Angel Michelle Funderburk (infant)

   (DAVISTON) Graveside services for infant Angel Michelle Funderburk of Daviston 
were Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Daviston Baptist Church Cemetery, with J. L. Sparks 
and the Rev. Tom Jacobs officiating.
   The infant died Thursday, April 29, at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
   Survivors inclu [sic] her parents, Lynn and Michelle Funderburk of Daviston; her sister 
Nicole Funderburk of Daviston; her brother, Jordan Funderburk of Daviston; her paternal 
grandmother, Faye Funderburk of Daviston; and her maternal grandparents, Walter and 
Hannelore Morris of Daviston.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Annie Pearl Meacham

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Annie Pearl Meacham, 80, of Roanoke were 
Monday, May 3, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Kenneth 
May officiating.
   Mrs. Meacham died Sunday, May 2, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Meacham was born Dec. 12, 1918, daughter of 
Zachery and Sara Hill Bowen.  She was a member of Roanoke First United Methodist 
Church and had retired from Palm Beach Company.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Olin Meacham.
   Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Meacham of Roanoke; one sister, Effilene 
Stallings of Woodland; one brother, Hettie Brown of Lanett; one granddaughter and 
four great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Redic C. White

   (OKEECHOBEE, Fla.) Redic C. White, 87, of Okeechobee, Fla., died Sunday, May 2, 
1999, at Glades General Hospital, Belle Glade, Fla.
   Mr. White was born Feb. 27, 1912, in Randolph County, Ala.  He was self-employed as 
a produce vendor.  Mr. White was a Mason and had served as the chief of police of South 
Bay, Fla., for 15 years.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian, in 1991.
   Surviving are seven daughters, Lawana Patterson of Sylacauga and Kate Hamilton, 
Carolyn Matthews, Wanda Matthews and Faye Brooks of Okeechobee, Elizabeth Martin 
of Alabama and Gail Williams, of Clewiston, Fla.; two sons, David White of Okeechobee 
and Cecil White of Mobile; 22 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be Thursday, May 6, at 3 p.m. at Jordan Chapel Church, Wedowee, 
with the Rev. Julian Murphy officiating.  Burial will be [in] the church cemetery.
   Arrangements are by Bass Okeechobee Funeral Home.

Oneida Pearl Bruner

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Oneida Pearl Bruner, 80, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Tex Ergle 
officiating.
   Mrs. Bruner died Saturday, May 1, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Bruner was born June 28, 1918, daughter of Benjamin 
and Beulah Foster Fincher.  She was a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church 
and a retired Knight-Enloe Elementery [sic] School teacher.  She was preceded in death 
by her husband, Audley Bruner.
   Survivors include one daughter, Katherine Bruner Tave of Coos Bay, Ore.; one son, 
Ben E. Bruner of Montgomery; one grandson; and a sister-in-law, Lillian Fincher of 
Roanoke.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Annie L. Awbrey Public Library in 
Roanoke.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Elizabeth Gilliland 'Liz' Chandler

   (DECATUR, Ga.) Elizabeth Gilliland Chandler died Monday, April 26, 1999, at age 27.
   Known as "Liz" to her family and friends, she was a student at Agnes Scott College in 
Decatur, Ga., and planned to graduate in December with a biology degree.  She was 
interested in pursuing a career in ecology, and spent a year as an AmeriCorps volunteer 
working with the EcoWatch program and Outward Bound.  One of her projects was the 
Forty Oaks Nature Preserve in Clarkston.  Liz was also a Wilderness First Responder and 
a volunteer for Youth Pride.
   Born Dec. 20, 1971, in Fayetteville, N.C., Liz moved in 1973 with her family to 
Decatur, where she spent most of her life.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of 
Decatur, and a 1990 graduate of Druid Hills High School, where she played soccer.  After 
graduation, she lifeguarded and taught swimming lessons at the YMCA in Decatur.
   Survivors include her mother, Sylvia Gilliland Chandler of Decatur; her brother, Joseph 
Chandler III of Carthage, N.C.; three nieces; two aunts; a great-aunt; and four cousins.  
She was predeceased by her father, Joe B. Chandler Jr. of Fayetteville; and four 
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gilliland of Roanoke and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chandler 
of Fayetteville.
   A service to celebrate Liz's life was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at Agnes Scott 
College's amphitheater.
   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Agnes Scott College Office of 
Development, 141 E. College Ave., Decatur, GA 30030.
   The Cremation Society of the South, Austell, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

OBITUARIES:

Benford Alton Maddox

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Benford Alton Maddox, 74, of Woodland were 
Monday, May 10, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Bethel East Baptist Church, with the Revs. Styles 
Akins, Homer McNeil and Ridley Parmer officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Maddox died at his home in Woodland on Friday, May 7.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Maddox was born March 18, 1925, son of Gussie and 
Mary Edna Parmer Maddox.  He was a veteran of World War II and had served in the 
Phillippines.  On March 15, 1999, Mr. Maddox was awarded a certificate recognizing 50 
years of continuous membership in American Legion Post 53.  He worked as a Randolph 
County school bus driver and retired after 22 years.  He was also owner and operator of a 
country store in the Bethel community for 33 years.
   Survivors include his wife, Flossie Davis Maddox of Woodland; one daughter, Jan 
Michels of Woodland; two sons, Dwayne Maddox and Darrin Maddox of Woodland; 
10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 21 nieces and nephews and a host of 
great-nieces and great-nephews.
   Pallbearers were Tonda Benefield, Keith Broach, Garner Maddox, Phil Broach, Buddy 
Hilley and Billy Ray Davis.  Honorary pallbearers were Roger Maddox, Basil Snyder, 
Gordon Harrington, Ruben Morgan, Dennis Broach and Ridley Herren.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Ethel Mae Battle

   (WADLEY) Ethel Mae Battle, 58, of Wadley died Sunday, May 9, 1999, at Northeast 
Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 12, at 1 p.m. at County Line Baptist Church, 
with the Rev. Sanford Johnson and the Rev. William H. Trammell Sr. officiating.
   Survivors include her father, Curtis Battle, of Wadley; a brother, Mack Arthur Battle of 
Wadley; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her mother, 
Jennie Mae Battle.
   Ms. Battle was a faithful member of County Line Baptist Church in Wadley, where she 
served as vice-president of the Missionary Society and secretary of the Sunday school.  
She also service [sic] as an usher for more than 25 years.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral services.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Addie Mae Reaves

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Addie Mae Reaves, 89, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
May 9, 1999, at 3 p.m. at Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke, with the Rev. Frank Foster 
officiating.
   Mrs. Reaves died Friday, May 7, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Reaves was born Sept. 17, 1909.  She was a 
member of Lowell United Methodist Church and had been employed with Handley Mills.
   Survivors include a grandson, Phillip Reaves; two great-grandsons; one sister, Odell 
Bennett; and one brother, George Cole, all of Roanoke.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Collins Pinkard

   (MILLTOWN) The Rev. Collins Pinkard, 84, of Milltown died Monday, May 3, 1999, 
at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services were at Jeff Jones Funeral Home at 3:30 on Wednesday, May 5, with 
interment in Milltown Cemetery.  The Rev. Gary Baugh officiated.
   Surviving are one sister, Loneta Mason of Opelika and several nieces and nephews.
   The Rev. Pinkard was a Chambers County native, born April 14, 1915.  He retired as a 
Methodist minister after 54 years.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Raidee Lee Smith

   (ROANOKE) Raidee Lee Smith, 90, of Roanoke died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at George 
H. Lanier Nursing Home, Valley.
   Funeral services were at Jeff Jones Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, with 
interment in LaFayette City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Smith is survived by one sister, Lillian Mathews of Valley and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Mrs. Smith was born April 1, 1909, in Chambers County.  She was a homemaker and a 
member of Milltown Methodist Church.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Guy Woodie Satterwhite

   (LILBURN, Ga.) Guy Woodie Satterwhite, 82, of Lilburn, Ga., died Wednesday, May 
5, 1999.
   The funeral was at noon on Saturday, May 8, at Bill Head Funeral Home, 
Lilburn/Tucker Chapel, with the Rev. Benny Frank Satterwhite officiating.  A graveside 
service was at Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Lavonia, Ga.
   A native of Wedowee, Mr. Satterwhite was retired from Magbee Brothers Lumber 
Supply.
   He is survived by his son, Jeff Satterwhite of Dacula, Ga.; three daughters, Wanda 
Norris of Grayson, Ga., Nancy Ward of Sandy, Utah, and Vickie Gangi of Bold Springs, 
Ga.; three brothers, William Satterwhite of Phenix City, R. T. Satterwhite of Rock Mills 
and Benny Frank Satterwhite of Roanoke; three sisters, Beatrice Alsobrook of Fredonia, 
Edna Sims of Huguley and Carrie Ann Windsor of Wadley; four grandchildren and two 
great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Bill Head Funeral Home, Tucker, Ga.

Mary E. Scales

   (WEDOWEE) Mary E. Scales, 84, of Wedowee died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at 
Wedowee Hospital.
   Funeral services were Saturday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at Stephen's Mission United 
Methodist Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. Joseph Hepburn officiating.
   Survivors include her husband, Lesley Sylvester Scales of Wedowee; three sons, the 
Rev. John Scales of Orlando, Fla., and Raymond Scales and Joseph Scales of Atlanta; 
seven daughters, Adella Hayden of Orlando, Ethel Houston and Gloria Lawson of 
Wedowee, Nora S. Lovell and Loventrice Kannar of Anniston, Dr. Ella Robinson of 
Montgomery and Cheryl Green of Manassas, Va.; 24 grandchildren and many great- 
grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Carrie Bell 
McPherson.
   Mrs. Scales was a member of Stephen's Mission United Methodist Church, Wedowee, 
which she served for many years as president of the Women's Society of Christian Service 
(United Methodist Women).
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Sarah E. Rea Turner

   (LAFAYETTE) Sarah E. Rea Turner, 68, of LaFayette died Sunday, May 2, 1999.
   Funeral services were at Friendship Baptist Church #1 on Thursday, May 6, at 2 p.m. 
with the Rev. Cornelius Reese Jr. officiating.  Interment was in the Friendship Baptist 
Church #2 Cemetery.
   Surviving are a son, Don Ameche Turner of LaFayette; her mother, Ms. Susie M. Rea 
of LaFayette; a grandson; five aunts; two uncles; and a host of other relatives and friends.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Marie Burke Vaughn

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Marie Burke Vaughn, 75, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
May 11, 1999, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Bobby Kirby and 
Albert Holcombe officiating.  Burial at Calvary Baptist Church cemetery.
   Mrs. Vaughn died Monday, May 10, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Vaughn was born July 15, 1923, daughter of 
Thomas Troy and Rilla Carr Burke.  She was a member of High Pine Baptist Church.  
Mrs. Vaughn was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Tidwell.
   Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Tidwell of Roanoke and Ruth Ayers of 
Douglasville, Ga.; two sons, Richard Tidwell and Tommy Tidwell of Roanoke; one sister, 
Ina Burke of Roanoke; one brother, Fred Burke of Roanoke; six grandchildren and three 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jason Tidwell, Steven Tidwell, Jeff Tidwell, Travis Burke, Billy Burke, 
Howard Manley and Benny Satterwhite.

Lowell Murphy McManus

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Lowell Murphy McManus, 83, of Woodland were 
Monday, May 10, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Bear Creek United Methodist Church, with the 
Revs. Tex Ergle and Warren Wilder officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. McManus died Saturday, May 8, at East Alabama Medical Center following a short 
illness.
   Mr. McManus, a native of Randolph County, was born Aug. 13, 1915, son of Joseph 
and Mollie Rampy McManus.  He was retired from Sewell Manufacturing and Bremen 
Bowdon Investment Company as a security guard.  He was mayor of Woodland for many 
years, a member of the Randolph Singing Convention, and served on the board of 
directors of the former Home Federal Savings and Loan.  He was preceded in death by his 
wife, Mrs. Bernice McManus.  He was a member of Bear Creek United Methodist 
Church.
   Survivors include a daughter, Pam Hawkins of Roanoke; a son, Charles McManus of 
Woodland; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two step-great- 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Gerald McManus, Hobert McManus, Roger McManus, Lenn 
McManus, Joe McCullough, Lance McCullough, Danny Brady and Paul Chelnut.  
Honorary pallbearers were Russell Bass and Wayne Yates.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

W. Harris Williams

   (LAFAYETTE) W. Harris Williams, Jr., 81, of LaFayette died Saturday, May 15, 1999, 
at his residence.
   Graveside services were Sunday, May 16, at 4 p.m. at LaFayette City Cemetery, with 
the Rev. Leroy McClendon and the Rev. Al Ruggles officiating.
   Mr. Williams was a native of Tallapoosa County, born Oct. 2, 1918.  He was a member 
of First United Methodist Church of LaFayette and a veteran of World War II and the 
Korean War.  He was retired from the service center of West Point Pepperell after many 
years of employment.
   Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Virginia Williams of LaFayette; a sons [sic], Jon 
Williams of Panama City Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a 
niece and nephew.
   Honorary pallbearers are member [sic] of the Walton Sunday School Class, Jimmy 
Rodgers, Jimmy Hines, Herman Hand, John Powell, Chan Brinson and Ray Heath.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice or the Walton 
Sunday School Class of First Methodist Church.

Mavis B. Fowler

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for Mavis B. Fowler, 71, of Newell were Sunday, May 16, 
1999, at 2 p.m. at Caver's Grove Congregational Christian Church, with the Revs. Billy 
East and Gordon Taylor officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Fowler died Saturday, May 15, at her residence following an extended illness.
   Mrs. Fowler was a native of Randolph County.  She had been employed with Olsten 
Kimberly Home Health Agency.  She had raised 73 foster children.  She was a member of 
Caver's Grove Congregational Christian Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Elbert J. Fowler of Newell; a daughter, Mary Jim Lehr of 
Ohatchee; a son, Charlie R. Stewart of Ohatchee; a step-son Larry Fowler of Anniston; 
her mother, Mae R. Boyd of Ohatchee; a sister, Marvis L. Blair of Ohatchee; five 
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and 73 foster children.
   Pallbearers were Boyd Blair, Benji Blair, Brian Blair, Brit Blair, Billy Caldwell and 
Heath Johnson.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

William Henry 'Bill' Garner

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for William Henry "Bill" Garner, 89, of Roanoke will be 
at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 19,1999, at Lowell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. 
Ladd Williams officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Garner died Sunday, May 16, at his residence.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Oct. 24, 1909.  He was a 
supervisor at Handley Mills, a Mason, and a member of Lowell United Methodist Church.  
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Cummings Garner.
   Survivors include a grandson, Gary Garner of New Hampshire; a great-grandson; three 
great-great-grandchildren, and his caretaker, Dot Kirby of Roanoke.
   Mr. Garner will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Jack Townley, Junior Perry, I. B. Moore and Perry Shelnutt.  
Honorary pallbearers will be Preston Story, Franklin Maddux, Gene Holliday, Jim Murr 
and Bobby Delashaw.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Ann Traylor

   (ASHLAND) Funeral services for Ann Traylor, 51, of Ashland were Saturday, May 15, 
1999, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jesse Shaddix officiating.  
Burial was in Wadley City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Traylor died Thursday, May 13, at her residence.
   She was a native of Randolph County, but had been a resident of Clay County for the 
past 25 years.  She received her bachelor's degree in education from Livingston University 
and was retired from the Clay County Board of Education, where she had taught for 25 
years at Ashland Elementary.  She was a member of the Twentieth Century Club and First 
United Methodist Church.
   Mrs. Traylor is survived by her husband, Kermit C. Traylor of Ashland; her parents, 
Hugh and Anna Jo Radney of Wadley; one daughter, Nancy T. Hendon of Ashland; two 
sons Christopher L. Traylor and Shaun K. Traylor of Ashland; two sisters, Catherine 
Stringfellow of Wadley and Sue Lane of Valencia, Calif.; and two brothers, Jim Radney of 
Jacksonville, Fla., and John Radney of McDonough, Ga.
   Pallbearers were John Wheeles, Mike Wheeles, Larry Fetner, Mike Beale, Buddy Griffin 
and Harold Saxon.  Honorary pallbearers were O. B. Griffin, doctors and staff of Clay 
County Medical Clinic, Clay County Hospice nurses and staff of Ashland Pharmacy.
   Arrangements were by Clay County Funeral Home.

John Emory Pike

   (SPRINGFIELD, Tenn.) John Emory Pike, 75, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at his 
home.
   Mr. Pike was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Roanoke, to the late Andrew Jackson and Vesta 
Cleo Lipham Pike.  He worked for the Coca-Cola company for 46 years.  At the time of 
his retirement, he was operations manager for the Nashville division.  Mr. Pike was a 
veteran of the U.S. Army where he served in World War II and the Korean Conflict, 
where he received the Silver Star and Purple Heart.  He was a member of First United 
Methodist Church in Springfield.
   Mr. Pike is survived by his wife, Marjorie Shores Pike; children John Emory Pike III and 
Gail Hoffman of Washington, D.C., Honey Pike and Susan Mason of Hendersonville, 
Tenn., Prissy and Sam Chilcutt of Cross Plains, Tenn., and Molly Pike of Marietta, Ga.; 
a brother, James Pike of LaGrange, Ga.; sisters, Julia Koon of Douglasville, Ga., and 
Joyce Bowman of Liberty, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at Robertson County Funeral Home on Thursday, May 13, at 
10 a.m., with Dr. Tom Cloyd and the Rev. Charles Poole officiating.  Interment was in the 
Rock Mills United Methodist Church Cemetery in Rock Mills.

Helton 'Doodle' Brown

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Helton "Doodle" Brown, 64, of Roanoke will be at 
2 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Tim 
Whaley and Jamie Taylor officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Brown died Monday, May 17, at his residence following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born July 11, 1934, son of Guy C. and 
Estelle Crenshaw Brown.  He was a veteran of World War II, an employee of Coast to 
Coast Home and Auto Store, a Roanoke volunteer fire fighter for 30 years, and a member 
of Mt. Carmel Church of Christ.
   Survivors include his wife, Brenda Wade Bron of Roanoke; two daughters, Pam Burks 
and Mary Perry of Rock Mills; his mother, Estelle Brown of Roanoke; one sister, 
Marvileen McManus of Woodland; two brothers, Archie Brown of Beaumont, Texas, and 
Tim Brown of Franklin, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Billy Royston, Billy Justice, Norman Wade, Jerry Wade, Larry Wade 
and Randy McManus.   Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Hudson, Joe Bob Gilham, 
James Burks, Doug Moring and Robert Williams.

Velmer C. Kent

   (LAFAYETTE) Funeral services for Velmer C. Kent, 84, of LaFayette, formerly of 
Wadley, were at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with 
the Rev. Rufus Thornton, Brad Shockley and Jerry Wheeles officiating.  Burial was at 
Concord Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Wadley.
   Mrs. Kent died Tuesday, May 11, at LaFayette Nursing Home following a short illness.
   She was born in Randolph County on July 3, 1914, daughter of Wayne and Lottie 
Cummings Vowell.  She was a homemaker and a member of Osnippa Baptist Church.
   Survivors include five daughters, Inez Wright of Wadley, Kathy Lamb of LaFayette, 
Opal Carlisle of Lanett, Jeanette Bennett of Cragford and Patricia Meadors of Opelika; 
three sisters, Mattie Lou Nix  and L. V. Parker of Roanoke and Jewell Watts of Hampton, 
Ga.; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Kevin Meadors, Jimmy Carlisle, Chris Rombokas, Stanley Bennett and 
Ray Mann.

Otis Jackson

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Otis Jackson, 80, of Wedowee were Tuesday, 
May 18, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Chris Mitchell 
and Mr. Henry Nelson officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Jackson died Friday, May 14, at his home after an extended illness.
   A native of Knox County, Ky., Mr. Jackson was born July 28, 1918, son of Perry and 
Cattie Baker Jackson.  He was a World War II Army veteran; a member of Midway 
Methodist Church and the Disabled American Veterans; and a former employee of 
Candlewick Yarns.
   Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Jackson Westbrook of Wedowee; three 
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a number of brothers and sister in 
Kentucky.
   Friends and family members served as pallbearers.

Claude R. Walker

   (TUSCALOOSA) Claude R. Walker, 83, of Tuscaloosa died April 4, 1999, at DCH 
Regional Medical Center.  Services were April 6 at First Presbyterian Church of 
Tuscaloosa.  Dr. Charles Durham officiated, with Heritage Funeral Home directing.
   Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents, Jefferson and Maude Walker.
   Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Colson Walker; sons, James C. Walker and C. 
Robert Walker and two grandchildren.
   Mr. Walker was born in Anniston in 1915.  He graduated from University of Alabama 
and coached at four high schools, including Handley High in Roanoke from 1945 to 1947.  
He sold sporting goods for many years for McKeen & Wilson, Walker-Huey.  He owned 
and worked for Appliance Parts since 1972.
   Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Tuscaloosa.

Mary Elliott Cotney

  (WADLEY) Funeral services for Mary Elliott Cotney, 74, of Wadley will be at 2 p.m. 
Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at Wadley First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bill 
Huffman and the Rev. Belon Friday officiating.  Burial will be in Wadley City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Cotney died suddenly, May 24, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born July 13, 1924, daughter of 
Thomas R. and Ruby Pearson Elliott.  She was employed by Pen Rose Corporation and 
was a member of Wadley First United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by 
her husband, Bob Cotney.
   Survivors include one daughter, Jane Williamson of Piedmont; three sons, Elliott 
Cotney, Richard Cotney and Stanley Cotney of Wadley; a sister Maudene Floyd of 
Quincy, Fla.; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Cotney will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. on 
Wednesday.

Theresa Wilson

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Theresa Wilson, 76, of Wedowee, were at 2 p.m. 
Thursday, May 20, 1999, at Liberty Grove Congregational Methodist Church with the

church cemetery.
   Mrs. Wilson died Tuesday, May 18, at Wedowee Hospital following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Dec. 11, 1922, daughter of Clint 
and Bessie Morrow Fincher.  She was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Grove 
Congregational Methodist Church.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Yvonne Parmer and Mrs. Beverly Holloway, 
both of Wedowee; one brother, C. Kelsey Fincher of Woodland; four grandchildren and 
one great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were Robert Wilson, Stewart Hill, Wade Parmer, Ben Parmer, Darren 
Anglin and Charles Fincher.

Iva Johnson Ballard

   (SPANISH FORT) Graveside funeral services for Iva Johnson Ballard, 83, of Spanish 
Fort, were at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 1999, at Randolph Memory Gardens, Roanoke, 
with Paul Widener officiating.
   Mrs. Ballard died May 17 at a nursing facility in Spanish Fort.
   A native of Randolph County, she was born Jan. 5, 1916, daughter of Willis and Agnes 
Smith Johnson.  She had been self-employed in the furniture business.  She was preceded 
in death by her husband, Jamie Ballard.
   Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Weseloh of Spanish Fort; two sisters, Margie 
Lovvorn and Elizabeth Meadows of Woodland; a granddaughter; and a number of nieces, 
nephews, and other relatives.

Harvey Duke

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for Harvey Duke, 71, of Newell were at 3 p.m. Saturday, 
May 22, 1999, at Benefield Funeral Chapel in Wedowee, with the Revs. Vann Brown, 
Eddie Debord and George Knott officiating.  Burial was at Union Baptist Church 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Duke died Thursday, May 20, at Marshall Medical Center South in Boaz.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born March 21, 1928, son of R. B. and 
Bertha Morrison Duke.  He was employed as an equipment operator for Randolph County 
and was a Baptist.  He was preceded in death by two children, Sandy Wayne Duke and 
Teresa Lynn Duke, and five grandchildren.
   Survivors include five daughters, Patsy Ann Higgins of Wadley, Dorothy Ann Hill of 
Graham, Judy Ogle of Albertville and Diane Quesda and Tina Duke of Guntersville; two 
sons, Bobby W. Duke of Newell and Lanny Duke of Roanoke; two sisters, Nancy Jane 
Gann of Heflin and Emmerline Huddleston of Wedowee; two brothers, J. D. Duke of 
Buchanan, Ga., and William Duke of Wedowee; 14 grandchildren and eight great- 
grandchildren.

Jeff Duke Taylor

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Jeff Duke Taylor Sr., 77, of Wadley were May 24, 
1999, at 11 a.m. at Pinetucky Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leron Murphy officiating.  
Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Taylor died Saturday May 22, at the V.A. Medical Center in Birmingham.
   Mr. Taylor was a native of Cleburne County, born March 26, 1922, son of M. J. Taylor 
and V. L. Waits Taylor.  He was retired from the U.S. Navy.  He was preceeded [sic] in 
death by a son, Joseph Daniel Taylor.
   Survivors include his wife, Jewell M. Taylor of Wadley; two daughters, Debbie Carey of 
Boise, Idaho, and Keicia Wolford of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sons, Jeff D. Taylor 
Jr. of Atlanta, Jerry K. Taylor of Caro, Mich., and Jimmy Dale Taylor of Jacksonville, 
Fla.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Jean Joyner and Dari 
Bennett of Alabaster, Georgia Hood and Ginger Martin of Birmingham, Betty Davis of 
Ashland, Naomi Blair of Five Points, and Teresa Moore of Roanoke; and five brothers, Bo

Betty Jean Coates

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Betty Jean Coates, 70, of Wedowee were Monday, 
May 24, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bob Edison 
officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Coates died Saturday, May 22, at her residence.
   Mrs. Coates was a native of Cherokee County, Ga., born June 21, 1928, daughter of 
Payton Haygood and Jessie Mae Kennedy Haygood.  She was a Baptist by faith and a 
homemaker.
   Mrs. Coates is survived by her husband, L. L. Coates Jr. of Wedowee; a daughter, Jessie 
Moreland of Newell; two sons, Ricky Coates of Whitesburg, Ga., and Leonard Coates III 
of Wedowee; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, June Rivers of 
Morrow, Ga., and Nobia Mims of Senoia, Ga.; and a brother, George Haygood of Senoia.

Sadie Ester Butler

   (GRAHAM) Sadie Ester Butler, 97, of Graham died Monday, May 24, 1999.
   Mrs. Butler was born May 22, 1902, in Heard County, Ga., daughter of the late Thomas 
R. and Ora Jane Butler Huckeba.  She was a member of the Primative [sic] Baptist 
Church, and a lifelong resident of this area.
   She was preceeded [sic] in death by her husband, Loyd A. Butler, on Nov. 11, 1972, 
and a son Clarence Butler, on May 27, 1998.
   Survivors include a son, Bob Butler of Graham; a daughter, Mrs. Murrah Young of 
Graham; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 26, at 11 a.m. CDT at Rainwater-West 
Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder Home Benefield officiating.  Interment will be in the 
Harmony Congregational Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Pallbearers will be Keith Young, Chuck Young, Christopher Butler, Buck Butler, Tim 
Ward and Ferris Broxton.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Hazel Louise Creed, 77, of Roanoke were Monday,

   Mrs. Creed is survived by a daughter, Jan Puckett of Roanoke; a son, Ronnie Creed of 
Roanoke; a brother, Robert Brown of Opelika; two grandchildren and six great- 
grandchildren.

Donald K. Jackson

   (DUNWOODY, Ga.) Donald K. Jackson, 42, of Dunwoody, Ga., died Sunday May 23, 
1999.
   Mr. Jackson was an employee with AT&T for 15 years and a member of the Telephone 
Pioneers of America.
   He is survived by his parents, Robert and Bettie Jackson of Roanoke; a grandmother, 
Robbie Faulkner of Smiths; longtime companion, Randy Gatlin of Dunwoody; a sister, 
Robin Gaylor of Phenix City; a brother, Ronald Jackson of LaGrange, Ga.; and three 
nephews.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, May 25, at 11 a.m. at Roswell Funeral Home in 
Roswell, Ga.  A graveside service was Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens.

Adron Hugo Allen

   (LANETT) Adron Hugo Allen, 71, or [sic] Lanett died Friday, May 21, 1999, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital.
   Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Alice Faye Allen; two sons, Adron Thomas Allen Sr. 
of Mobile and Timothy D. Allen of Lanett; six sisters, Sybil Tittle of Pensacola, Fla., 
Jeanette Lippincott of Panama City, Fla., Joyce Cobb of Roanoke, and Barbara Nuncio, 
Shirley Henson and Ann Howard of Lanett; a brother, Greg Eurtile Allen of Clarksville, 
Tenn.; and three grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
2 p.m. on Monday, May 24, with burial in Langdale Cemetery.  The Rev. Rusty Letson 
officiated.
   Mr. Allen was born Jan. 3, 1928, in Chambers County, son of the late Carrie Wood 
Allen and Rex D. Allen.  He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during the 
Korean War.  He was formerly employed with the West Point Stevens Lanett Mill and had 
retired from Dixie Mills in LaGrange, Ga.  He attended Happy Valley Baptist Church.

Carl Turnham

   (LANETT) Carl Turnham, 85, of Lanett died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital.
   Survivors include his wife, Rosa Lee Turnham; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Hodges of 
Roanoke and Mrs. John Moon of Montgomery; and two brothers, Bill Turnham of 
LaFayette and Pete Turnham of Auburn.
   Mr. Turnham was born in Abanda on Aug. 26, 1913, son of the late Fannie Mae 
Sessions Turnham and Joseph Henry Turnham.  He was a graduate of Milltown High 
School and had been a resident of Lanett since 1933.  He worked at the Lanett Bleachery 
and Dye Works for 43 years.  He was a member of Lanett Masonic Lodge and Lanett 
First Baptist Church.  He attended church and Sunday school regularly until his health 
declined.
   Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Lanett at 
4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett.  The Rev. 
Russell Dean officiated.

   Mrs. Hancock died Monday, May 24, at her residence.

1905, daughter of Charlie and Sallie Lou Osborne Clack.  She had been employed at 
Handley Mills and was a member of Mt. Zion Christian Church.  She was preceeded [sic] 
in death by her husband, William Marvin Hancock.
   Survivors include a daughter, Margie Henry of Roanoke; two sisters, Cordie Mae House 
of Langdale and Thelma Barber of Lanett; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 
two great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Ricky Hancock, Ussery Henry Jr., John Henry, Timothy Henry,
