FORMER ALTOONAN KILLED IN WRECK

Mrs. Sarah Roland Meredith, aged 22, former Altoona resident who moved to
Harrisburg just about a month ago, died of a fractured skull en route to a
Harrisburg hospital late yesterday afternoon when the car in which she was
riding struck a truck near Meck's corners in Perry County.
Injured in the wreck were her husband, Chester W. Meredith, aged 25, treated
for lacerations of the scalp and nose; and her 4 month old daughter,
Margaret Meredith, bruised forehead. Her 2 year old son, William, escaped injury.
State motor police at Duncannon sub station said the accident occurred when
the machines side swiped each other as they rounded a sharp curve. Police
said both vehicles were "hugging" the center of the road and neither driver
saw the other in time to avoid the accident.
The driver of the truck, Bryan H. Reichenbach of Richville, was released on
his own recognizance. The Meredith family moved to Harrisburg about the
first of December after he became employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad
company as a brakeman. Formerly Mrs. Meredith and the children lived at 1510
Seventeenth avenue, Altoona, while the father worked at Kersey, R. D., Elk County.
Mrs. Meredith was killed on her birthday, being born in Altoona, January 2,
1920. She is survived by her husband and two children, all of Harrisburg;
her father, J. H. Roland; a brother, John E. Roland, and a sister, Esther M.
Roland, all of Altoona, in addition to two grandparents, Mrs. M. M. Roland
of Altoona and Mrs. Katie Bupp of Newport. She was a member of the Christian
and Missionary Alliance church of Altoona.
The body will be returned to Altoona late today and friends will be received
at the Mauk & Yates funeral home.

ANOTHER HUNTER KILLED IN County; HALF STATE TOTAL

Centre Hall Man, 26, Accidentally Shot By Fellow Hunter
With deer season in Centre County only three days old yesterday, four men
were dead from causes connected with the big game season. Four died, three
from bullet wounds and one from a heart attack in Centre County from early
Sunday morning to yesterday morning. The entire total in the state is eight.
The most recent victim is Woodrow D. Meeker, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Van
Meeker of Centre Hall. He died yesterday morning in the Philipsburg State
Hospital as the result of a wound received while hunting the day before at
the Spring Run hunting camp in Burnside township.
Meeker was shot through the abdomen when a gun being carried by a fellow
hunter fell and accidentally was discharged, according to information
received by Coroner Charles Sheckler. It is understood it was a gun in the
hands of Emel Anderson of near Moshannon that was discharged when the owner
slipped while walking through the woods.
Members of the hunting party were James W. Meeker, 21, Centre Hall, brother
of the victim, a cousin, William Meeker, 25, Pine Glen, and Emel and Carl
Anderson of near Moshannon.

about 12 miles from Snow Shoe and four miles off the Snow Shoe-Renovo highway.
Meeker's companians had great difficulty in removing him from the woods to a
place where he could be placed in the Johnson ambulance which was called
from Snow Shoe. It required several hours to carry the man on an improvised
stretcher uphill four miles through the woods to the highway.
The first set of carries became exhausted and before the road was reached
the second pair became exhausted. Meeker remained conscious. At the hospital
he also remained conscious. Tuesday night when he was able to talk with
members of his family.
Meeker, who was employed in Sharon, came to Centre County over the weekend
to go deer hunting. He was a son of Van D. and Emma Hoffman Meeker and was
born in Wisconsin October 14, 1916. He spent most of his life in Centre
County, going to Sharon some time ago to work in a defense plant.
He is survived by his parents, his wife, the former Helen Hoover of near
Kylertown, by one brother and four sisters. They are James W. Meeker, and
Gertrude L. Meeker, both employed in Sharon, Edith m., Betty E. and Isabel
L., all at home. His father is a deputy game warden in Centre County.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Advent Church at
Grassflat, with a Tyrone minister officiating. Interment will take place in
the church cemetery.
Coroner Sheckler began an investigation of the accident and expected to
complete the investigation today. The coroner could not state whether an
inquest would be held.

Struck by an automobile while crossing Seventh avenue at Sixteenth street

The automobile which struck him was driven by Roy J. Orr of 2211 Second
avenue, who was returning to his home from his office at Seventh avenue and
Fifth street. The driver told police officers that he saw the man on the
east crosswalk of the intersection but not in time to avoid striking him.
Members of Mr. Wood's family, with whom he had been in the business district
but who returned to the home by automobile while he expressed the intention
of walking, were notified of the accident and were at his bedside in Mercy
hospital when death occurred.
Severely Injured
The aged man's condition was regarded as serious from the time of his

reported that they found skid marks for a distance of fifty-two feet, burned
very plainly into the street. They also learned that Mr. Wood was eleven
feet across the avenue, walking south, when struck by the car.
Mr. Orr told the officers that Mr. Wood seemed to grab the front of the car
and hold on, remaining on the car until it stopped, when he seemed to roll
over and fall to the street. In his report, Mr. Orr stated that he was
traveling about twenty miles per hour.
Native of Philadelphia.
John William Wood was born in Philadelphia on June 23, 1853, a son of John
