WAR VETERAN IS FATALLY BURNED

Edgar T. Williams, Aged 44, Dies at Hospital Following Explosion in
Gas-Filled Bedroom.

Edgar T. Williams, aged 44, World war veteran and more recently identified
with a CCC camp in the eastern part of the state, died at the Altoona
hospital at 12.30 o'clock this afternoon from burns received early today in
an explosion in a gas-filled bedroom at a rooming house at 1313 Eleventh
street, where he had spent the night.
Williams was so badly burned and suffered from shock to such an extent that
he was unable to give any coherent story but police said that it was evident
that the man had stuck a match in a gas-filled room and that an explosion
resulted which shattered the single window in the room and set fire to the
interior.
Other occupants of the rooming house, a two-story structure facing on the
end of Lexington avenue at Eleventh street, were awakened at 6.20 o'clock
this morning by the deafening roar which rocked the house and caused a mild
tremor in the immediate neighborhood.
W.F. Gerlach who occupied a room adjoining on the same floor and the
former's son, Max Gerlach, occupying a suite to the rear of the house, were
the first on the scene following the explosion. The elder Gerlach said he
was awakened by the blast and ran out into the hallway while his son, about
to leave for his work, ran to the end of the hallway and broke in the door
leading to Williams' room.
They found Williams lying naked on the bed, the bed covers ablaze and the
man terribly seared by the flames following the explosion. The elder
Gerlack [sic] said that a bed cover was thrown around Williams and he was
carried out into the hallway because of the fire in his room.
Meanwhile Police Sergeant C.M. Campbell's attention was called to the fire
while he was in the vicinity of eleventh street and Twelfth avenue, and
(unreadable) E. Wertzberger, who was with him, to turn in an alarm, firemen
responding to the scene and nipping the fire in the bud. The material
damage to the room was extimated at about $100.
Williams was rushed to the Altoona hospital where it was seen at once that
his burns covered such a large area and were of such consequence that he was
in critical condition. He suffered much from shock, too.
From evidence found in the room belief was expressed that gas had escaped at
some point from the gas heater near the foot of the bed. This heater was
attached to a wall outlet by a rubber hose which was burned off. Paint and
wallpaper in the room were scorched, indicating the severity of the flames
that broke out following the ignition of the gas.
Neither hospital attendants nor relatives were able to secure from Williams
the facts leading up to the explosion because of his condition. He was in a
semi-conscious state. However, immediately following the blast and when the
Gerlach's first reached him, he asked that his wife, Mrs. Helen (Baird)
Williams of 300 Third avenue, be notified. His wife was informed of the
accident and immediately came to the hospital.
Ida Ebersole, proprietor of the rooming house, said that Williams came to
her place last night between 8.30 and 9 o'clock and asked for a room. She
said she was told that he was home on a furlough from a CCC camp and was
about to return. A railroad ticket found among Williams' effects indicated
that the camp where he was staying was in the Reading district.
The house is owned by Lucy Bryers of 408 Fourth avenue. While occupants put
some water on the blazing bedclothes, with the arrival of the firemen the
blaze was quickly subdued. Companies Nos. 1, 4, 8 and truck A responded.
No. 4 used a booster tank.
Force of the blast was felt throughout the neighborhood. Alex Weir of 1101
Fourteenth avenue, just around the corner from the scene, was startled while
reading about the Texas disaster when the explosion came almost next door.
Edgar Thompson Williams was born in this city April 13, 1892, a son of
William T. and Elizabeth (Morgan) Williams, both deceased. In addition to
his wife there survive a son, Robert, a daughter, Helen Williams, and these
step-children: Jack Sayers, San Diego, Calif., now in the United States
navy; Richard Sayers, Spruce Creek; Mrs. Beatrice Straub, Altoona. Two
brothers, Arthur and Llewellen Williams of this city survive, together with
a half-sister, (unreadable) Richardson of Rochelle, N.J. Another brother,
David Williams, preceded him in death several years ago. The deceased was a
member of St. Luke's Episcopal church.
Williams' former home was at 308 Willow avenue where his parents, the late
Mr. and Mrs. William T. Williams, resided for many years. The victim of
today's accident served in the United States army from May, 1918, until the
following year, being located most of the time at Camp Meade, Maryland, as a
member of company 27, 154th depot brigade.
He is said to have following painting for a while and also had been employed
later by the Pennsy as a boilermaker.
