OBITUARIES:

Correction:  The funeral for Dorothy Mae Teal, 79, of Roanoke was Saturday, May 25, at 
Arab Memorial Chapel in Arab.  Mrs. Teal died Wednesday, May 22, at her home.

Columbus G. White

   (LANETT) Columbus G. White, 74, of Lanett died Monday morning, June 3, 2002, at 
Canterbury Nursing Home, Phenix City.
   Mr. White was born in Randolph county June 2, 1928, son of the late Annie Mae Austin 
White and Lowell White.  He was a retired employee of West Point Stevens Lanett Mill 
and a member of Faith Temple Church of God.
   Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Miller; a son Larry White of LaGrange, Ga.; two 
sisters, Katie Thompson of Steele and Agnes Gentry of New Orleans, La.; nine 
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his wife Frances B. White.
   Services will be at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. on 
Wednesday, June 5, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.  The Rev. Dino Atkins will 
officiate.
   Arrangements are by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

William Argus Freeman

   (WADLEY) Services for William Argus Freeman, 69, of Wadley were Friday, May 31, 
2002, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel in Lineville with the Rev. Zenus 
Windsor and Rev. Abi Carlisle-Wilke officiating.  Burial followed in Mt. Olive Baptist 
Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Freeman died Wednesday, May 29, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   He was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, was a veteran of the Korean 
War having served in the U.S. Army, was self employed and was a member of Pleasant 
Hill United Methodist Church.
   He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Freeman of Wadley; a daughter, Darlene Adamson 
of Wadley; a granddaughter, and a sister, Loretta Erwin of Wedowee.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville.

Jane W. Kramer

   (SYLACAUGA) Graveside service for Jane W. Kramer, 73, was Friday at 11 a.m. in 
Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Jonathan Todd officiating.
   Mrs. Kramer died Wednesday, May 29, at Coosa Valley BMC.
   She was a 1946 graduate of Handley High School in Roanoke and graduated from 
Huntingdon College in Montgomery in 1949.  She taught at Springville High School from 
1949 to 1950, then served as secretary of Sylacauga First United Methodist Church, 
1950-51.
   In 1953, Mrs. Kramer went to work for the Talladega County Department of Human 
Resources, retiring as supervisor of Children's Services in 1984.  A plaque presented to 
her upon her retirement read in part, "She has demonstrated genuine loyalty to the 
program while showing steadfast and unselfish devotion to the development of public 
welfare in Alabama."
   She was an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she 
served as treasurer of local units, as well as district treasurer, and was active in the United 
Methodist Women.  She was an active member of Sylacauga Service League for several 
years, working diligently to support the League's scholarship program.
   She is survived by her husband, Chris Kramer Jr. of Sylacauga; one daughter, Margaret 
Griffin of Eufaula; one son, Chris Kramer III of Sylacauga; three grandchildren and one 
sister, Mrs. C. F. Neighbors of Roanoke.
   Honorary pallbearers were Randy Hamilton, Tim McClure, Terry Veazey, Jeff Bryant, 
Bruce Brownlee, Roger Hollon and David Foote.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wesley Chapel Methodist Church.
   Arrangements were by Curtis and Son Funeral Home North Chapel, Sylacauga.

Sarah Joyce Bell

   (DECATUR, Ga.) Sarah Joyce Bell, 49, of Decatur, Ga., formerly of Roanoke, died 
Friday morning, May 31, 2002, at her residence.
   Services will be Saturday, June 8, at 11 a.m. at Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. Elijah Jackson Jr. and the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating.  Interment 
will be at Kennedy Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Ellenwood, Ga.
   Survivors include her husband, Bobby Lee Bell of Decatur; two sons, Bobby Jearous 
Bell and Nicholas Ramon Bell of Decatur; two daughters, Gwendolyn Sharon Bell and 
Tangi LeShea Jackson of Decatur; five brothers, Curtis Lee Joiner and James Rachel 
Joiner of Roanoke, Anthony Jerome Joiner of Tampa, Fla., Ronald O'Neal of Decatur, and 
Jerry Bell of South Carolina; and nine grandchildren.
   Mrs. Bell was the only daughter of the late Curtis L. and Sarah Mae Clark Joiner, born 
in Roanoke on June 17, 1952.  She grew up in Roanoke and attended Friendship Baptist 
Church in Bacon Level community.  Mrs. Bell was a graduate of Randolph County 
Training School.  After marrying her school sweetheart, they moved to the Atlanta area, 
where they raised their children.  Mrs. Bell was very active in the Baptist church, where 
she presided over the Mother Board, the Pastor's Aid Board, the Women's Usher Board 
and the Kitchen Committee.  She also served as associate matron in Dorthy Riley Chapter 
#137, Order of the Eastern Star.
   Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Clark Memorial Funeral Service, 
Roanoke.

Stanford LaMar Foster

   (ROANOKE) Stanford LaMar Foster, 38, of Roanoke died Thursday, May 30, 2002, 
of a gunshot wound at Clark Brothers Quality Meats, where he was employed.  The cause 
of the shooting is being investigated.
   Services will be Wednesday, June 5, at 2 p.m. at Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating.  Interment will be in Skyview Memorial 
Gardens, Welch.
   Survivors include a special friend, Carlene Finley of Abanda; his stepfather, Aaron 
Bryant Sr. of Richmond, Calif.; three brothers, Jimmy Foster and Patrick Foster of 
Roanoke and Calvin Foster of Anniston; five sisters, Stephanie Woodgett and Brenda 
Johnson of Roanoke and Jacqueline Foster, Kimberly Bryant and Tasha Bryant of 
Anniston; two stepsisters, Katherine Bryant of Houston, Texas, and Linda Bryant of 
Toledo, Ohio; and four stepbrothers, Donald Bryant of Richmond and David Bryant, 
Aaron Bryant, Jr. and Ronald Bryant of Toledo.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Cordie W. Hodges

   (ROANOKE) Services for Cordie W. Hodges, 87, of Roanoke were Monday, June 3, 
2002, at 2 p.m. at Ava Methodist Church, with the Revs. S. T. Janney and Marvin Luttrell 
officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Hodges died Saturday, June 1, at Roanoke Healthcare Center.
   A lifelong Roanoke resident, Mrs. Hodges was born March 14, 1915, daughter of 
William Robert and Adlee Harvel Woodard.  She was a homemaker and a member of 
Midway Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Randle Hodges.
   Survivors include three daughters, Carole Holt of Valley, Linda Harrington of Ringgold, 
Ga., and Jeanette Cofield of LaFayette; three sons, Robert B. Hodges, Charles E. Hodges 
and Larry "Don" Hodges, all of Roanoke; an adopted son, Jerry Mobley of Standing 
Rock; one sister, Limmer Perry of Roanoke; a special friend, Herb Waller of Roanoke; 
eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Junior Baker

   (LINEVILLE) Services for Junior Baker, 72, of Lineville were Saturday, June 1, 2002, 
at 2 p.m. at Faith Assembly of God with the Revs. Bill Heath and Joe Young officiating.  
Burial was in the church cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville in charge.
   Mr. Baker died Wednesday, May 29, at Clay County Hospital.
   Survivors include his wife, Annie Lou Baker of Lineville; a daughter, Dorothy Tapley of 
Barfield; four sons, Junior Ray Baker of Lineville, Danny Baker of Ashland, William 
Baker of Valley and Jerry Baker of Barfield; two sisters, Essie Triplett of Lineville and 
Eula Mae Heath of Ashland; a brother, Hubert Baker of LaGrange; 16 grandchildren and 
11 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Bobby Joe Baker, Jeremy Edmondson, Terry Triplett, Vernon 
Huddleston, Ronnie McCormick, Junior Morrison and David Richardson.  Honorary 
pallbearers will be Donald Overton, David Tapley and DeWayne Tapley.
   Mr. Baker was a native of Randolph County and had lived in Clay County most of his 
life.  He had been employed by Chickipeak Mfg. Co. and was a member of Faith Assembly 
of God.

Alvie Lee Howard

   (JACKSONVILLE) Services for Alvie Lee Howard, 85, of Jacksonville, formerly of 
Wedowee, were Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with 
the Rev. Freddie Whitley officiating.  Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Howard died Sunday, June 2, at her home.
   A Jackson County native, Mrs. Howard was born June 30, 1916, daughter of Arzie and 
Mary Deal Adams.  She was a homemaker.  Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by a 
daughter, Ella Mae Grayson.
   Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth Warren of Wedowee and Joyce Hicks and 
Alma Jean Sims of Bryant; three sons, Hollis Howard of Rainsville, Billy Howard of 
Wedowee and Donald Ray Howard of Stevenson; 23 grandchildren and several 
great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Marty Ivey, Billy Wayne, Earl Wooton, Wayne Singleton, Wayne Sims, 
Clinton Hill and Glynn Sims.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Doris Traylor Johnson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Doris Traylor Johnson, 88, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
June 4, 2002, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Wedowee, with the Rev. Don Paris 
officiating.  Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Johnson died Saturday, June 1, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   Mrs. Johnson was a native of Randolph County, born Jan. 26, 1914, daughter of 
Menyard H. Traylor and Bessie Landers Taylor [sic].  She had been employed with 
McCarley's Auto Dealership as a bookkeeper.  She was a member of First Baptist Church 
of Wedowee.
   Mrs. Johnson is survived by a son, William Traylor Johnson of Griffin, Ga.; one 
grandchild; two sisters Mary Frank Willingham and Margorie Boone of Wedowee; and a 
host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Vernon Lipham, Ricky Daniel, Herman Landers, Charlie Boone, Roy 
Bunn and Greg Willingham.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Margie Betharee Rampy Snyder

   (WOODLAND) Services for Margie Betharee Rampy Snyder, 73, of Woodland were 
Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Bear Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. 
Warren Wilder and the Rev. Mike Samuels officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Snyder died Sunday, June 2, at Riverview Regional Hospital in Gadsden.
   Mrs. Snyder was a native of Randolph County, born April 28, 1929, daughter of John 
Rass Rampy and Bell Stewart Rampy.  She had been employed as a seamstress at Lamar 
Manufacturing and was a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church.  She was 
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, R. V. Snyder; a brother, Wallace Rampy; 
and two sisters, Opal Rampy and Collene Rampy.
   Mrs. Snyder is survived by a daughter, Shirley Smith Young of Boaz; a son Larry Jack 
Smith of Bowdon, Ga.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Marvalene 
Edwards of Oxford; a stepdaughter, Delaine Brown of Powder Springs, Ga.; three 
stepsons, Joel Snyder, Basil Snyder and Duke Snyder of Woodland; and several 
stepgrandchilden.
   Pallbearers were Gary Edwards, Richard Edwards, Jack Shelton, Hobart McManus, 
Mark Whitley and Harold Spradlin.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Ruben Maderson Ustik [sic]

   (WOODLAND) Services for Ruben Maderson Ustik, 84, of Woodland were Tuesday, 
June 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tony Morris 
officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Ustick died Sunday, June 2, at his residence.
   Mr. Ustick was a native of Houston, Texas, born Oct. 18, 1917, son of the late Ruben 
Maderson Ustick Sr. and Martha Grossman Ustick.  He was retired from L&N Railroad's 
Machinist Department.  He was a member of Providence Baptist Church, the Masonic 
Lodge of Eastpoint, Ga., and the Scottish Rite.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, 
Jo Evelyn Wall, and a son Richard Bowerman.
   Mr. Ustick is survived by his wife, Jimmy May Cook Ustick of Woodland; two 
daughters, Vivian Elders of Woodland and Annie Williamson of Fairburn, Ga.; six 
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Annie Skinner Kadle

   (ANNISTON) Services for Annie Skinner Kadle, 90, of Anniston were Monday, June 3, 
2002, at 11 a.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Carlton Weathers officiating.  
Burial was at Forestlawn Gardens.
   Mrs. Kadle died Saturday, June 1, at Jacksonville Health and Rehabilitation.
   Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Maxine Skinner of Cullman; 
four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Kadle was a native of Randolph County and resident of the Saks area for the past 
60 years.  She was retied from Green Art Supply and a member of First Baptist Church of 
Saks.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Odis Skinner and Elvin Kadle; a 
daughter, Ailene Green; a sister, Vera Benefield; and a brother, James V. Shaddix.

Master Dewey Talley

   (LAFAYETTE) Master Dewey Talley, 91, of LaFayette died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at 
East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Mr. Talley was born in Chambers County on May 18, 1911.  He was retired from Lanett 
Bleachery & Dye Works after 45 years of service.  He had also worked for Chambers 
County Highway Department.  He was a member of Penton Church of God.
   Services were at Penton Church of God at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, with interment 
in the church cemetery.  Mr. Jack Hill officiated.
   Survivors include his wife, Claudine Talley of LaFayette; two daughters, Rudene 
Christian of LaFayette and LuGene Bradley of Valley; one son, Benny Bob Talley of 
LaFayette; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.  
He was preceded in death by his first wife, LaVerne Talley, and a son, Earnest Talley.
   Pallbearers were Lamar Talley, Rickey Gooden, Joe Talley, Ernie Talley, Mitch Gooden, 
Eric Gooden, Allen Michael Dudley, Josh Gooden and Bradley Talley.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Bobby J. 'Jamie' Johnson Jr.

   (WEDOWEE) Bobby J. "Jamie" Johnson Jr., 43, of County Road 493, Wedowee, died 
Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Jackson Hospital, Montgomery.
   He was born  May 30, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pa.  He was employed at East Alabama 
Lumber Company, LaFayette.
   Services were at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, at Broad Street Church of Christ, Wedowee, 
with the Rev. Richard Hall officiating.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
   Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Suenett Johnson Hale of Wedowee; two sisters, 
Susan Link of Dadeville and Shron Hodges of Camp Hill; a niece, two nephews; and 
several aunts, uncles and cousins.
   Jamie was preceded in death by his father, Bobby James Johnson, Sr.; his paternal 
grandparents, Margaret "Pauline" and James Robert "Roscoe" Johnson; and his maternal 
grandparents, Leslie J. and Eula Mae Mulkey.
   Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
   Arrangements were by Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home, LaGrange, Ga.

Willis Sanford Wilkerson

   (WADLEY) Services for Willis Sanford Wilkerson, 79, of Wadley were Friday, June 7, 
2002, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel in Lineville, with the Rev. Jimmy 
Brand and the Rev. Ray Franklin officiating.  Burial was in Mt. Olive Baptist Church 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Wilkerson died Tuesday, June 4, at Clay County Hospital.  He was a native and 
lifelong resident of Clay County and a World War II veteran.  He had been employed with 
Wellborn Cabinet Company and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
   He is survived by one daughter, Anita Waldrep of New Site; two sons, Ronnie 
Wilkerson and Paul Wilkerson of Wadley; one sister, Clara Rice of Wadley; two brothers, 
Rollie Wilkerson of Wadley and Willard Knight of LaGrange, Ga.; a special lady, Pat 
Mulkey; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jason Wilkerson, Jimmy Sprayberry, Glenn Elkins, William Wilkerson, 
Ramon Tapia, Jimmy Wilkerson, Jerry "Pee-Wee" Wilkerson, Douglas Kirk and Scott 
Stewart.  Honorary pallbearer was Herman Kilgore.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of 
Clay County.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville.

Herschel Edsel 'Jack' Townley

   (ROANOKE) Services for Herschel Edsel "Jack" Townley, 76, of Roanoke were 
Monday, June 10, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Center Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ridley 
Herren and the Rev. J. D. Bearden officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Townley died Saturday, June 8, at his residence.
   Mr. Townley was born in Cleburne County on June 26, 1925, son of Willis G. Townley 
and Fannie P. Truett.  He owned and worked as an accountant for Townley Tax Service.
   Survivors include two sons, Hubert Wayne Townely [sic] of Roanoke and Danny Hiriam 
Townley of Enterprise; a sister, Amy Shellnutt of Roanoke; five grandchildren, two great- 
grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and ten step-great-grandchildren.
   Active and honorary pallbearers were the members of Roanoke Masonic Lodge #132.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Irene Thomas Dabbs

   (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Services for Irene Thomas Dabbs, 91, of Columbus, Ga., were 
Saturday, June 8, 2002, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, Roanoke, with the Rev. 
Johnny Williams, the Rev. Tommy Gene Young and the Rev. Mark Brown officiating.  
Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Dabbs died Friday, June 7, at Hamilton House Nursing Home, Columbus.
   Mrs. Dabbs was born Dec. 1, 1910, in Clay County, daughter of Martin M. and Laura 
McCain Thomas.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Milltown.  She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben.
   Survivors include a daughter, Hazel Randell of Columbus; three sons, Rayford Dabbs of 
Roanoke, Hayward "Buddy" Dabbs of Columbia, Ky., and James "Jim" Dabbs of 
Clarksville, Ga.; two sisters, Myrtie Thomas of Douglasville, Ga., and Edna Davis of Villa 
Rica, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Dabbs' grandsons served as pallbearers.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Mae Bell Wilder 

   (HOGANSVILLE, Ga.) Services for Mae Bell Wilder, 87, of Hogansville, Ga., will be 
Thursday, June 13, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. J. D. Bearden 
officiating.  Burial will follow in Union Baptist Cemetery.
   Mrs. Wilder died at Higgins General Hospital in Bremen, Ga., on Tuesday, June 11.
   Mrs. Wilder was born Nov. 6, 1914, in Cleburne County, daughter of George Thos 
Phillips and Lou Hicks Wilder.  She was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church.  Mrs. 
Wilder was preceded in death by her husband, Hoyt Wilder.
   Survivors include one sister, Ruby B. Prestridge of Hogansville; and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers include Bennie Morrison, Donald Morrison, Jack Morrison, Chris Morrison, 
Tracy Morrison and Daniel Morrison.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee on Wednesday 
from 5 to 8 p.m.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Mary Francis Pickard, 50, of Wedowee were Tuesday, 
June 11, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Burks Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wright 
officiating.  Burial followed at the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Pickard died Thursday, June 6, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Survivors include a daughter, April Pickard of Wedowee; three sons, Jeffery Pickard, 
Terry Prothro and Tony Pickard, all of Wedowee; her mother, Minnie Prothro of 
Wedowee; five sisters, Mayola Houston, Rosie Lee Wright, Willie Dean Roundtree, 
Flomae Wright, all of Wedowee, and Maudie Brown of Wadley; two brothers, Willie Joe 
Prothro and Herman Pearson of Wedowee; eight grandchildren; several nieces and 
nephews.
   Mrs. Pickard was preceded in death by her father, Joe Prothro; and her husband, Jessie 
Pickard.

Eugene Denson Sheppard

   (ROANOKE) Services for Eugene Denson Sheppard, 76, of Roanoke were Monday, 
June 17, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Bethany Lime Congregational Christian Church.
   Mr. Sheppard died Saturday, June 15, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Mr. Sheppard was born in Randolph County on Jan. 12, 1926, son of David W. 
Sheppard and Inez Eckos.  He was a member of Bethany Lime Congregational Christian 
Church and was employed by Uniroyal Tire in Hogansville, Ga.
   Survivors include his wife, Violet Agnus Sheppard of Roanoke; two daughters, Pamela

Linda Delane Wiggins

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Linda Delane Wiggins, 59, of Bowdon, Ga., died Monday, June 17, 
2002, in Hospice LaGrange.
   She was born in Randolph County, May 23, 1943, daughter of the late Claude and Lilla 
Douglas Tucker.  Mrs. Wiggins was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and was an 
associate at Wal-Mart in the Cosmetics Department.
   In addition to her parents, a brother, Vurlis Tucker, preceded her in death.
   Survivors include [a] brother, Doug Tucker of Bowdon; and six sisters, Evelyn 
Buchanan of Bowdon, Jean Wiggins of Newell, Millie Smith of Bowdon, Thelma Tucker 
of Barnesville, Ga., Jessie Aultman of Roberta, Ga., and Wilma Wilson of Forest Park, 
Ga.
   Services will be Wednesday, June 19, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Rainwater-West Funeral 
Home, with the Rev. Douglas Haynes and the Rev. Joey Gay officiating.  Scott Alums and 
Denise Vingers will furnish music.  Nephews will be pallbearers.  Interment will follow in 
Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Newell.

Lois Vivian Farmer

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lois Vivian Farmer, 87, of Roanoke, were Friday, June 14, 
2002, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Harold Flannery and the 
Rev. Thomas Farmer officiating.  Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Farmer died Wednesday, June 12, at Beverly Healthcare-Lanett.
   A long-time Randolph County resident, Mrs. Farmer was born Sept. 3, 1914, in Carroll 
County, Ga., daughter of Rufus and Mattie Alsabrooks Freeman.  She was a member of 
North Main Congregational Christian Church and had been employed with Handley Mills.  
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Farmer.
   Mrs. Farmer is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Drennen and Sue Farmer of 
Standing Rock and R. L. and Ellen Farmer of Roanoke; six grandchildren, seven great- 
grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Memorials may be floral rf [sic]the family suggests contributions to Chattahoochee 
Hospice (#6 Medical Park North, Valley, AL 36854).

   (WOODLAND) Services for Hattie Cordie Noles, 85, of Woodland, were Friday, June

   Mrs. Noles died Wednesday, June 12, at her residence.
   Mrs. Noles was a native of Randolph County, born Dec. 18, 1916, the daughter of Jon 
Robert Henderson and Maudie Emory Clark Henderson.  She was a homemaker and a 
member of Woodland Church of God.
   Mrs. Noles is survived by her husband, John H. Noles of Woodland; two sons, James 
Bolt of Roanoke and Jay Bolt of Anniston; and a sister Letha M. Sellers of West Point, 
Ga.
   Pallbearers were Charlie Hanner, Clinton Baldwin, Charlie Kalor, Joe Hayes, Tim 
Shaver and Harvey Sears.

   (ROANOKE) Services for William Shaffer "Billy" Johns, 60, of Roanoke, were Friday,

   Mr. Johns died Tuesday, June 11, in LaFayette.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Johns was born May 10, 1942, son of William Cornelius 
Johns and Anna Bell Scott.  He was a member of Taylor's Crossroads Church of Christ.  
Mr. Johns was self employed.
   Survivors include his wife, Tommie Lynn Johns of Roanoke; a daughter, Tina Johns 
Eason of Sharpsburg, Ga.; two sons, William Donny Johns and Jason Johns of Roanoke; a 
grandson; two sisters, Margie Herren of Woodland and Sybil Henderson of New Hope; 
and one brother, Jimmy Johns of Franklin, Ga.

   (WADLEY) Services for Mavis Taylor Pitts, 80, of Wadley were Friday, May 24, 2002,

   Mrs. Pitts died Tuesday, May 21, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   A Clay County native, Mrs. Pitts was born Sept. 18, 1921, daughter of Charlie Mabron 
and Ruth Cole Taylor.  Mrs. Pitts worked as a spinner at West Point Stevens and was a 
member of Abanda Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen 
Pitts.
   Survivors include three daughter[s], Edith Lucille Pitts of Wadley, Martha Joyce Spears 
of Valley and Betty Jean Pool of LaFayetteville, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Raye Winzell of 
Griffin, Ga.; two stepsons, Richard Lee Pitts and Ernest Pitts of Griffin; six sisters, Mae 
Browning of LaFayette, Elizabeth Mitchell of Opelika, Maudine Sibley of Austell, Ga., 
Katherine Weldon of Detroit, Mich., Geraldine Sanders of Chicago, Ill., and Margaret 
Cook of Florida; three brothers, James Mabron Taylor of Arlington, Va., Thomas Donald 
Taylor of Roanoke and Milton Cook of Oklahoma; 13 grandchildren and several great- 
grandchildren.

   Mrs. Long died Friday, June 14, at Roanoke Health Care Center.
   Mrs. Long was born in Clay County June 23, 1926, daughter of William Harvey Long 
and Etta Jones.  She was a member of Darien Primitive Baptist Church and worked as a 
spinner at Avondale Mills.
   Survivors include four grandchildren, Tammy Flourney and Deborah Mirah of Mobile 
and Lynn Flourney and Margaret Ann Benefield of LaGrange, Ga.; and several great- 
grandchildren.

George Olin Benefield

   (MEMPHIS Tenn.) Services for George Olin Benefield, 84, of Memphis, Tenn., were 
Tuesday, June 18, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bruce 
Word.  Burial was at High Pine Baptist Church Cemetery in Randolph County.
   Mr. Benefield was born Nov. 11, 1917, son of George R. Benefield and Mae Baird.  He 
was a member of Cherokee Baptist Church and worked as an engineer for Burlington 
North[ern] Railroad.  Mr. Benefield also was in the U.S. Navy and fought in World War 
II.
   Survivors include wife, Marilyn Phillips Benefield of Memphis; and four sisters, Janet 
Mitchum and Ucal Huey of Roanoke, Melba Crossett of Memphis and Joy Allen of 
Wedowee.

Earnest I. Crenshaw

   (LINEVILLE) Services for Earnest I. Crenshaw, 76, of Lineville, were Saturday, June 
15, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, with Bro. W. C. Cofield and 
Bro. Wayne Spradlin officiating.  Burial was at Forestlawn Gardens.
   Mr. Crenshaw died Thursday, June 13, at Baptist Montclair Hospital in Birmingham.
   Mr. Crenshaw was born April 7, 1926, in Randolph County, son of the late Mr. and 
Mrs. M. E. Crenshaw.  Mr. Crenshaw worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years.  
He was a member of Mount Carmel Church of Christ and a member of the National 
Association of Retired Federal Employees.
   Survivors include his wife, Loette Mitchell Crenshaw; a daughter, Regina McKenzie of 
Helena, Ark.; a son, Barry Crenshaw of Anniston; three sisters, Eura Brown of Woodland, 
Nell Laney of LaGrange, and Norma Horne of Lineville; and three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Johnny McKenzie, Ferris Stephens, Hobert Horne, Jay White, Eddie 
Laney, Crouch Rampy and Darryl Huddleston.  Honorary pallbearers were Dennis Barr, 
Mike Commander, Mike Crenshaw and Steven Huddleston.

Ersula Messer Thompson

  (WOODLAND) Services for Mrs. Ersula Messer Thompson, 78, of Woodland will be 
Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Napoleon East Church of Christ, with Bro. W. C. 
Cofield and Bro. James McDonald officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Thompson died Monday, June 17, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. Thompson was a native of Randolph County, born Oct. 11, 1923, daughter of Kirk 
Messer and Carrie Bailey Messer.  She was a homemaker and a member of Napoleon East 
Church of Christ.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis "Bill" Thompson; 
two sisters, Valeria Gowens and Dorothy Mitchell; and two brothers, Edmond Messer and 
Holice Messer.
   Mrs. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Helen Pollard and Pat Screws of 
Woodland; two sons, Donald Thompson of Wedowee and Tony Thompson of Woodland; 
one sister, Lonie Mae Wilson of Roanoke; one brother, Curtis Messer of Roanoke; four 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Wayne Spradlin, Frank Wilson, Richard Kelley, Brantley Screws, 
Cory Brewer and Darrell Gray.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee until one hour 
prior to services.  Mrs. Thompson will lie in state at the church for one hour, beginning at 
1 p.m.

Eva Graham Morris

   (WOODLAND) Services for Eva Graham Morris, 94, of Woodland were Sunday, June 
16, 2002, at 4 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Bro. Gerald Romine officiating.  
Burial was at 11 a.m. Monday, June 17, at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
   Mrs. Morris died Friday, June 14, at Lineville Nursing Facility.
   Mrs. Morris was born Dec. 21, 1907, in Randolph County.  She was a member of 
Roanoke Church of Christ and worked as a registered nurse for West Georgia Medical 
Center and V.A. hospitals in Birmingham and in Montgomery.  She also worked as a 
county nurse for Lamar and Shelby counties.
   Mrs. Morris is preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Malcolm Morris; her parents, 
John Robert and Dovie Odessa Graham; two sisters, Pallie Yates and Pauline Wahn; and a 
brother, Johnny Graham.
   Survivors include four sisters, Pearl Hall and Wylodene Bates of Woodland, Eltis 
Cummings of Roanoke and Julie T. Peterson of Montgomery; two brothers, James A. 
Graham and Charles B. Graham of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
   In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to Roanoke Church of Christ or to the 
charity of one's choice.

OBITUARIES:

J. W. Brand

   (LANETT) J. W. Brand, 72, of Lanett died Friday, June 21, 2002, at George H. Lanier 
Memorial Hospital.
   Survivors include his wife, Betty Moon Brand; a daughter, Lisa Brand Falk of Valley; a 
son, William Steven Brand of Colbert, Ga.; one grandchild; a sister, Louise Gilbert of 
Lanett; and a number of nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, William Woody Brand and Kate Johnston 
Brand.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. EDT 
on Sunday, June 23, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery.  The Rev. Mike Stonebraker 
officiated.
   Mr. Brand was born in Chambers County on May 11, 1930.  He had worked for the City 
of Lanett for 21 years and for Auburn Water Board.  He retired from West Point Stevens 
Service Center in 1995 and he worked part time for Hydro Operations Inc.  He was a 
member of Victory Baptist Church.

Nancy Lee Bailey

   (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Services for Nancy Lee Bailey, 71, of Columbus, Ga., were 
Monday, June 24, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, Roanoke, with the 
Rev. Gary Waller officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Bailey died Saturday, June 22, at Columbus Medical Center.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Bailey was the daughter of Frank Lee and Mae Hudson 
Lee.  She was a member of Covenant Sunday School Class, Muscogee Genealogical 
Society, Augusta Genealogical Society, the National Genealogical Society and First 
Presbyterian Church of Columbus.
   Survivors include husband, Johnny B. Bailey of Columbus; a daughter, Megan Busby of 
Columbus; one grandchild; and a sister, Mary Frank Awbrey of Alabaster.
   Memorial services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church of Columbus.

Winnie Ruth Hester Williams

   (ANNISTON) Services for Winnie Ruth Hester Williams, 90, of Anniston, formerly of 
Woodland, were Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church in Newell, 
with the Rev. C. C. McCain officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Williams died Saturday, June 22, at her residence in Anniston. 
   Mrs. Williams was a native of Randolph County, born Oct. 14, 1911, daughter of 
Tommy Hester and Lucy Smith Hester.  She was retired from the Randolph County 
School System with more than 40 years of service.  She taught in Newell, Pine Hill, 
Graham, Big Springs and Woodland schools.  She was a member of the local and state 
retired teachers associations and also a member of Golden Springs Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband, Marlin Williams of Anniston; a daughter, 
Sarah Willis of Anniston; a son, James Velford Williams of Cohutta, Ga.; six grandchildren 
and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Richard Lee, Tony Ross, Johnny Crawford, Thomas Green and Glen 
Green.

Bobby Sherman Masdon

   (WEDOWEE) Bobby Sherman "Big Bobby" Masdon, 52, of County Road 329, 
Wedowee, died Sunday, June 23, 2002 at Wedowee Hospital.
   He was born Nov. 9, 1949, in Carroll County, Ga., to the late Fred Masdon and 
Dorothy Ayres Masdon.  He was a carpenter.
   Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Hendrix and Betty 
Jean Locklear.
   Survivors includes his wife of 32 years, Jackie Masdon of Wedowee; a daughter, Denise 
Sullivan of Carrollton, Ga.; sons Bobby Masdon Jr. of Bowdon, Ga., and Tony Masdon of 
Carrollton; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
   Services were Tuesday, June 25, at 1 p.m. at Martin and Hightower Heritage Chapel, 
Carrollton, with the Rev. Anthony Puckett officiating.  In accordance with the family's 
wishes, the body will be cremated.
   Arrangements were by Martin and Hightower Heritage, Carrollton.

Martha Fuller Oliver

   (VALLEY) Martha Fuller Oliver, 66, of Valley died Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at her 
residence.
   She is survived by her husband, Dovard Oliver; a son Jeff Oliver of Anderson, S.C.; 
three daughters, Sharon Smallwood and Karon Fullerton of Valley and Tanya Farrar of Ft. 
Walton Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Mildred Oliver of Panama City, Fla., Sylvene Benson of 
Pensacola, Fla., Mary Stewart of Titusville, Fla., and Frankie Hamrick of Valley; a 
brother, Bernard Fuller of Roanoke; and five grandchildren.
   Services will be at First Baptist Church of Shawmut on Wednesday, June 26, at 2 p.m. 
EDT, with burial in Johnson Memorial Gardens in Valley.  Dr. Jerome King and the Rev. 
Kevin Brannan will officiate.
   Mrs. Oliver was born in Chambers County on May 1, 1936, daughter of the late Lois 
Smith Fuller and Morgan Fuller.  She was a life long area resident and devoted wife, 
mother and grandmother.  She was very active in her church and had been in declining 
health for the past two years.  She had retired from West Point Stevens Transportation 
Department after 33 years of service.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of 
Shawmut.

   (ROANOKE) Willie Amos Hurston, 85, of Roanoke died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at 
Hospice LaGrange, LaGrange, Ga.
   Services will be Friday, June 28, at noon at Canaan Baptist Church, Welch, with the 
Rev. Rodney K. Turner officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include two sons, Joseph B. Hurston of Detroit, Mich., and Jessie Louis 
Hurston of Cleveland, Ohio; two daughters, Ethel Hurston of Cambria Heights, N.Y. and 
Cathy O. Sellers of Queens, N.Y.; six granddaughters; three grandsons; 14 great- 
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 
Jim and Ella Mae Hurston; his wife, Katie Maude Hurston; and two sons, George Hurston 
and Willie Hurston.
   Visitation will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service on Thursday, after 10 a.m.  The 
body will be placed in the church one hour before services.

Allen Mundy

   (LAFAYETTE) Allen Mundy, 84, of LaFayette died Monday, June 24, 2002 at East 
Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, at the Lebanon 
Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Buffalo, with the Rev. Wayne Barrett officiating.
   Surviving are one son, Ron Mundy of Marshall, Texas; one daughter, Penny Teel of 
LaFayette; one sister, Pauline Shumaker of Anniston; three brothers, Robert Mundy, 
Herbert Mundy and Charles Mundy of Anniston; four grandchildren and five great- 
grandchildren.
   Mr. Mundy was an Alabama native, born June 13, 1918.  He was retired from civil 
service as an ammunition inspector after 25 years of service.

James Pouncey Elder

   (GASTONIA, N.C.) James Pouncey Elder, 63, of Gastonia, N.C., died Monday, June 
10, 2002, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
   Mr. Elder was born in West Point, Ga., son of the late Loys James and Ruby Jo Pouncey 
Elder.  He grew up in Abanda.  He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a member of First 
Presbyterian Church in Gastonia, where he was a former deacon, and a member of The 
Rotary Club of Gastonia.
   Survivors include his wife, Katherine Hughes Elder of Gastonia; a son, Kenneth Elder of 
Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Katherine Elder of Asheville, N.C.; a brother, Thomas 
Elder of Frisco, Texas; a sister, Caroline Pace of Eden, N.C., and two grandchildren.
   Graveside services were Wednesday, June 12, in Alamance Memorial Park, Burlington, 
N.C. with the Rev. Stephen Caddell officiating.
