OBITUARIES:

Donna Jacquline Norred

   (ROANOKE) Services for Donna Jacquline Norred, 58, of Roanoke were Thursday, 
March 29, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Gerald 
Sheppard and Frank Foster officiating.  Burial was in Wehadkee Primitive Baptist Church 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Norred died Tuesday, March 27, at Hospice LaGrange.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Norred was born Sept. 14, 1942, daughter of 
Howard J. and Hazel Hall Rushton.  She was a member of Rock Mills Methodist Church 
and a self-employed pawn broker.  She was preceded in death by her father, Howard J. 
Rushton, and two sons, Anthony Gene Norred and Christopher Michael Norred.
   Survivors include her husband, W. O. Norred of Roanoke; a daughter, Bambi Norred of 
Roanoke; one son, Greg Norred of Rock Mills; two grandsons; her mother, Hazel 
Rushton of Rock Mills; one sister, Ruth Paris of Peoria, Ariz.; and two brothers, Gene 
Rushton of Roanoke and Tommy Rushton of LaGrange, Ga.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James Handley Knight

   (ROANOKE) Services for James Handley Knight Sr., 70, of Roanoke, formerly of 
Jonesboro and Dawsonville, Ga., were Friday, March 30, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum 
Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Kirby officiating.  Burial followed at Cedarwood 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Knight died Monday, March 26, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   He was born in Randolph County on Feb. 28, 1931, son of Edward Wilts Knight and 
Ruby Melinda Dunson Knight.  He had been self-employed as a brick mason and was a 
member of the Roanoke Masonic Lodge.
   Survivors include his wife, Linda Brown of Roanoke; two daughters, Barbara Davis of 
Douglasville, Ga., and Pamela McGuire of Muscadine; a son, James H. "Jimmy" Knight Jr. 
of Anniston; two step-daughters, Shelby Nunn of Wadley and Shirley Chaffin of Roanoke; 
a stepson, Tommy Brown of Roanoke; four sisters, Annie Mae Wellborn of Peachtree 
City, Ga., Ruth Laxon of Atlanta, Frances Smith of Roanoke and Linda Mayberry of 
Ashland; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Keith Smith, Kirby Smith, Steve McGuire, Hollie Howard, Tony 
Moore and Walter Wellborn.  Honorary pallbearers were members of the Roanoke 
Masonic Lodge.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Marie Perryman Pike

   (ROANOKE) Services for Marie Perryman Pike, 73, of Roanoke will be on Thursday, 
April 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Clifford Delee 
officiating.  Burial will follow at Fredonia Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Pike died Tuesday, April 3, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   She was born in Chambers County on Dec. 14, 1927, daughter of Jacob and Quillie 
Myrtle Tinney Perryman.  She had been employed at West Point Pepperell and was a 
member of Community Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Vernon Pike.
   Survivors include a son, Randall "Pee Wee" Pike of Roanoke; a brother, Doug Perryman 
of Riverdale, Ga.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home on Wednesday for 8 a.m. 
until 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

John Joseph Timek

   (WEDOWEE) Services for John Joseph Timek, 81, of Wedowee were Saturday, March 
31, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Midway United Methodist Church, with Revs. Ed Grooms and 
Cloyce Johnson officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Timek died Wednesday, March 28, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center 
in Anniston.
   He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Aug 1, 1919, son of William Stephen and Mary 
Timek.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, had been employed at Milliken Mills, 
was a member of the VFW and American Legion, and was of the Catholic faith.  He was 
preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Emily Ginn.
   Survivors include his wife, Jessie Holloway Timek of Wedowee; a daughter, Johnnie 
Sue Stillwell of Oxford; four granddaughters; one grandson; three great-grandchildren; 
one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Norman Spears, Harold Holmes, Rex May, Bobby Yates, Rayford 
Edmondson and Junior Benefield.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Rossie Mae Cofield

   (WEDOWEE) Service for Rossie Mae Cofield, 80, of Wedowee were Saturday, March 
31, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Revs. Paul Davis, Chris Mitchell, 
Cal Ledbetter, David Haig and Wayne Woods officiating.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Cofield died Thursday, March 29, at Gadsden Regional Medical Center in 
Gadsden.
   She was born in Clay County on Feb. 8, 1921, daughter of Joseph Jackson Cash and 
Iola McCormick Cash.  She was a teacher at Wedowee and Woodland schools, was Beta 
Club and Math Club sponsor, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Maley Gold Cofield of Wedowee; two sons, Sam Cofield 
of Kadiz, Ky., and Bill Cofield of Oneonta; two sisters, Katie Jo Norris of Auburn and 
Dorothy Hicks of Harvey, La.; two brothers, Eddie Orion Cash of Wadley and Dewey 
Byron Cash of Columbus, Ga.; and five grandchildren.
   In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Calvary Baptist 
Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 833, Wedowee, AL 36278.
   Pallbearers were Bud Roan, Joe Cash, Gene Cash, Jimmy Cash, Paul Cash, Earl 
Huddleston and K. V. Lipham.

Albert Blake Heard

   (OXFORD) Albert Blake Heard, 69, of Oxford died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in 
Anniston.
   Services were Sunday, April 1, at 2 p.m. at Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston, 
with Dr. Ron Ethridge officiating.  Burial was in Midway United Methodist Cemetery in 
Randolph County.
   Survivors include his wife Alice Needham of Oxford; three sons, Albert Blake Heard Jr. 
of Oxford, Brent Needham Heard of Williamsburg, Va., and Patrick Kyle Heard of 
Huntsville; three sisters, Daisy Mae Eason of Wedowee, Jean Owen Cosper of Oxford and 
Ruby Anna Daniel of Florence; two brothers, George Thomas Heard of Oxford and 
Charles Lee Heard of Decatur; and five grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jerry Thornton, Ronald Edwards, Johnny Galloway, Charles Hess, Ken 
Shropshire and Ben Gilreath.  Honorary pallbearers were past and present employees of 
the Anniston Star.
   Mr. Heard was a native of Randolph County and a resident of Calhoun County most of 
his life.  He graduated in 1950 from Randolph County High School.  He was a charter 
member of the Oxford Quarterback Club, past member of the Oxford Rotary Club, Oxford 
Baseball for Youth volunteer, and avid supporter of Marion Military Institute.  He was a 
Korean War veteran, where he served aboard the storied destroyer "USS The Sullivans."  
Mr. Heard worked in the composing room of the Anniston Star for more than 40 years 
until his retirement as production manager in 1997.  He was preceded in death by his 
mother, Lanie Frances Morrison Heard, and his father, Stell Blake Heard, one sister, 
Myrtis Bates, and two brothers, Arthur Heard and Arnton Heard.
   Arrangements were by Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston.

Floyd Joiner

   (WOODLAND) Floyd Joiner, 85, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at his residence at 
809 County Rd. 51, Woodland.
   Survivors include three daughters, Cassie Stone of Woodland, Martiner Lott of 
Fairburn, Ga., and Wanda Nelson of Martiniez, Ga.; four sons, Roy Lee Joiner, Willie B. 
Joiner, James Edward Joiner and Larry Joiner, all of Woodland; three sisters, one brother; 
21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of 
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
   Services for Mr. Joiner were Saturday, March 31, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Methodist 
Church, Woodland, with the Rev. Percy Nolan officiating.  Interment was in the Floyd and 
Nancy Joiner Family Cemetery, Woodland.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Levis Lovvorn Wilson

   (WOODLAND)  Services for Levis Lovvorn Wilson, 88, of Woodland, were Monday, 
April 2, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Daniel and the Rev. 
Bobby Kirby officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Wilson died Saturday, March 31, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   Mrs. Wilson was a native of Randolph County, born May 31, 1912, the daughter of J. 
Albert Lovvorn and Maud Hinton Lovvorn.  She was a retired teacher with the Randolph 
County Board of Education, having taught for 42 years.  She was a lifelong resident of 
Randolph County and a lifelong member and church treasurer of Zion Baptist Church.  
She was also a member of Retired Teacher's Association and the Homemakers Club.  She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Herman L. Wilson.
   Mrs. Wilson is survived by her son, John R. Wilson of Opelika; a brother, Dr. Roy Lee 
Lovvorn of Raleigh, NC; a grandson; a granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were the deacons of Zion Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Annie Ruth Collier Bradley

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Annie Ruth Collier Bradley, 98, of Roanoke were 
on Sunday, April 8, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Antioch Congregational Christian Church 
Cemetery, with the Rev. Floyd Carmack officiating.
   Mrs. Collier died Thursday, April 5, at her home.
   She was born in Randolph County on Oct. 30, 1902, daughter of J. W. and Lena Vinson 
Collier.  She was employed as a teacher in Atmore for many years.  She was a member of 
Antioch Congregational Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Alec Bradley.
   Survivors include five sisters, Virginia Hammontree, Sarah Harris and Lucile Hoffman, 
all of Roanoke, Mary Finney of Pasadena, Texas, and Beulah Pearson of Sarasota, Fla., 
and several nieces and nephews.
   Memorial donations may be made to Antioch Congregational Christian Church, 8198 
County Rd. 258, Roanoke, AL 36274 or a charity of your choice.

Beulah Mae Pearson

   (SARASOTA, Fla.) Graveside services for Beulah Mae Pearson, 92, of Sarasota, Fla., 
were Sunday, April 8, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery, with the 
Rev. Floyd Carmack officiating.
   Mrs. Pearson died Saturday, April 7, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
   A Chambers County native, Mrs. Pearson was born Feb. 28, 1909, daughter of J. W. 
and Lena Vinson Collier.  She was a homemaker and the widow of Horace H. Pearson.
   Survivors include a daughter, Pat Grant of Sarasota; four sisters, Virginia Hammontree, 
Sarah Harris and Lucille Hoffman of Roanoke and Mary Finney of Pasadena, Texas; nine 
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

George E. Chapman

   (ROANOKE) George E. Chapman, 77, of Roanoke died Saturday April 7, 2001, at 
Vencor Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., after an extended illness.
   Services will be Thursday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, 335 
Avenue A, Roanoke, with the Rev. Tommie L. Finley, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in 
East Roanoke Cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Countess Chapman of Roanoke; one son, Ronald 
Chapman of Commerce City, Colo.; two daughters, Mrs. Linda C. Felton of Auburn and 
Ms. Countess E. Chapman of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two granddaughters; a brother-in-law; 
two sisters-in-law; an aunt; 10 nieces and nephews; three great-nieces and several cousins.
   Mr. Chapman will lie in state on Wednesday after 10 a.m. at Clark Memorial Funeral 
Service in Roanoke.
   Mr. Chapman was born in Anniston, the only child of the late John Chapman and 
Mahalia Aurelia Jones Chapman.  He grew up and attended public school in Tallapoosa 
County.  He distinguished himself in the field of education, retiring from the Chambers 
County School System, where he served for a number of years as principal of Five Points 
Elementary School.  Mr. Chapman held a B.S. degree from Tuskegee Institute and a 
master of education degree from Atlanta University.  In addition to his academic 
distinctions, he contributed greatly to the religious and civic progress and growth of his 
neighborhood and community.  He served on the Roanoke Utilities Board and was a 
member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the Randolph County Branch of the NAACP, 
Randolph County Chapter of the A.D.C. and Randolph County Recreation Association.  
Mr. Chapman was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Roanoke where he 
taught adult Sunday school classes, served as a member of the Trustee Board and as a 
steward, and worked in all phases of the church at the local, parish district, and conference 
levels.  Mr. Chapman was a veteran of World War II, having served in the European 
Theatre.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Oran Jessie Perry Sr.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Oran Jessie Perry Sr., 96, of Roanoke were on Monday, 
April 9, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Midway United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jamie Taylor 
officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Perry died Saturday, April 7, at Decatur Medical Center in Decatur, Ga.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born on March 15, 1905, son of James 
Walter and Lou Green Perry.  He had been employed with Handley Mills and was a 
member of Midway Methodist Church.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Janie 
Thrower Perry, a son, James W. Perry, and a daughter, Joan Hopkins.
   Survivors include four daughters, Faye Dillard of Americus, Ga., Dot Rombokas and 
Shirley Andrews of Roanoke, and Dianne Tarver of Alexander City; two sons, Oran Perry 
Jr. and Bobby Perry of Wedowee; 22 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 10 
great-great grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

   (ROANOKE) Lorenza White, 56, of Roanoke died Thursday, April 5, 2001, in Park 
City, Kentucky.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Catherine White of Roanoke; three daughters, Brenda 
Nolan, Patricia Lee, and Helen Woods of Roanoke; three sons, Lorenza White Jr. and 
Kennis White of Roanoke and Dennis White of LaGrange, Ga.; three sisters, one brother; 
10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
   Services for Mr. White were Tuesday, April 10, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church on 
Riley Street in Roanoke, with the Rev. Lathonia Wright officiating.  Interment was in East 
Roanoke Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Julie Ann Hemming Dobson

   (BOWLING GREEN, Ky.) Julie Ann Hemming Dobson, 58, of Bowling Green, Ky., 
died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Hickory, N.C.
   A native of Meridian, Miss., Mrs. Dobson was the daughter of the late Cliff William 
Hemming and the late Ann McDuffie Hemming.  She was a registered nurse and nurse 
pratitioner, a former instructor at Western Kentucky University School of Nursing, a 
graduate of the University of Mississippi and the University of Michigan with a master's 
degree from the University of Alabama.  She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
   Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church with burial in the 
garden at Christ Episcopal Church in Bowling Green.
   Survivors include her husband, Dr. Carl Dobson of Bowling Green; a daughter, Mary 
Shea Dobson of Bowling Green; a son, Trey Dobson of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother Cliff 
W. Hemming of Davidson, N.C.; a sister, Lanny Wann of Pearl, Miss.; and several nieces 
and nephews.
   Arrangements are by J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapel, Bowling Green.

George Pershing Eason

   (WOODLAND) Services for George Pershing Eason, 81, of Woodland were Sunday, 
April 8, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, with the Revs. Cecil Halsey and 
David Daniel officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Eason died Saturday, April 7, at Hospice LaGrange.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Eason was born Oct. 1, 1919, son of John B. and Nancy 
A. Fincher Eason.  He was a World War II Army veteran, a cattle farmer and a member of 
Providence Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, 
Crawford Eason.
   Mr. Eason is survived by a sister, Nancy Eason Noles of Woodland.
   Pallbearers were Junior Whitmore, Chad Whitmore, Rickey Spradlin, Harold Spradlin, 
Burlin Meadows and Bob Yates.

Sara Joan Noles

   (WOODLAND) Services for Sara Joan Noles, 68, of Woodland were Friday, April 13, 
2001, at 2 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church, with the Revs. David Daniel and Scott 
Hanna officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Noles died Tuesday, April 10, at Atlanta Medical Center in Atlanta, Ga.
   She was born in Troup County, Ga., on Oct. 4, 1932, daughter of Calvin and Winnie 
Cammon Hipp.  She was employed by Ingles Grocery Store and was a member of the 
Women's Bowling Association and Big Springs Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Bill Noles of Woodland; four daughters, Teresa C. Keith 
of Grantville, Ga., Candy Rudd of Tallahassee, Fla., Kathy Jo Morrow of Cedartown, Ga., 
and Windy T. Jenne of Melbourne, Fla.; two sons, William A. Carden Jr. and David Keith 
Noles, both of Newnan, Ga.; a brother, Robert Calvin Hipp of Rayburn Gap, Ga.; 14 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Wynn Carden, Cleave Heath Jr., Jim Keith IV, Scott Noles, Durant 
Noles and Kevin Spears.

Lloyd Thomas Stewart

   (WOODLAND) Services for Lloyd Thomas Stewart, 75, of Woodland were Friday, 
April 13, 2001, at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove Church of Christ, with Brother Joe Young, 
Brother W. C. Cofield and Brother Harry Cobb officiating.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery.
   Mr. Stewart died Wednesday, April 11, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A lifeling resident of Randolph County, he was born on Feb 6, 1926, son of Thomas 
Wilson and Bernice Bailey Stewart.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, had been 
employed at Amoco Fabrics and Fibers and was a member of Oak Grove Church of 
Christ.
   Survivors include his wife, Eunice Stewart of Woodland; three daughters, Lynda Hurley 
of Roanoke and Marilyn Messer and Elaine Parmer of Woodland; two sons, James 
Thomas Stewart and Marlon Stewart of Woodland; 11 grandchildren and four 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Arnold Rollins, Stewart Hill, Darrell Hill, Norman Stewart, Keith 
Stewart, Bobby Stewart, Mike Fields and George Smith.

Hulan Kyle 'Bubba' Rollins

   (ROANOKE) Services for Hulan Kyle "Bubba" Rollins, 26, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
April 14, 2001, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jimmy Brand 
officiating.  Burial was in Friendship Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Rollins died Thursday, April 12, at his residence.
   He was born in Randolph County on Sept. 23, 1974, son of Hulan and Debra Rollins.  
He had been employed in construction work and was a member of Lebanon Christian 
Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Rollins of Roanoke; his parents, Hulan and Debra 
Rollins of Roanoke; a sister, Heather Rollins Cook of Wadley; his great-grandmother, 
Geneva Moore of Roanoke; a niece and a nephew.
   Pallbearers were Glenn Brown, Andrew Channell, Fitzgerald Brown, Keith Cook, Larry 
Clark and Keith Gilliland.

Magaline Pike

   (VALLEY) Magaline Pike, 57, of Valley died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Mrs. Pike was a native of Camp Hill, born April 2, 1944.  She was a former employee of 
West Point Stevens' Lanett Mill and attended Faith Temple Church of God.
   Mrs. Pike is survived by her husband, Jerry Pike; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Miles of 
Huguley; two sons, Joe Lowery of Lanett and Howard M. Miles Jr. of Lanett; four 
stepchildren, Eugene Pike and Cheyene Pike of Roanoke, Terri Laster of Standing Rock 
and Billy James Pike of Rock Mills; her mother, Velma S. Hunt of Valley; her father, Joe 
T. Hunt of LaFayette; six sisters, Mary Weldon of Huguley, Christy Landers and Nadine 
Gossett of Fredonia, Pauline Colley and Jackie Whaley of Lanett, and Kathy Moncus of 
Valley; and 11 grandchildren.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. on 
Sunday, April 15, with burial in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Chambers County.  The Rev. 
Joseph H. Schuck and the Rev. Clifford DeLee officiated.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Herbert Thomas Heard

   (ROANOKE) Services for Herbert Thomas Heard, 72, of Roanoke were Tuesday, April 
17, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Scott Hannah officiating.  
Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Heard died Friday, April 13, at his residence.
   A native of Randolph County, he had lived in Laurel, Md., for many years before 
returning to Randolph County in 1974.  He was born Nov. 4, 1928, son of Edgar S. and 
Ethel Hester Heard.  He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War and was employed 
with the U.S. Government.  He was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church, where he 
was a deacon and choir member.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and 
Ethel Heard; his step-mother, Dona Williams Heard; a sister, Alice Sanders; and a brother, 
Elliott Heard.
   Survivors include two sisters, Louise McDow of Roanoke and Sarah Calhoun of Arab; 
two brothers, William B. Heard of Huntsville and John H. Heard of Dallas, Ga.; and 
several nieces and nephews.
   Memorial donations can be made to Big Springs Baptist Church of the Big Springs 
Cemetery Fund.
   Pallbearers were nephews.  Honorary pallbearers were members of the Men's Sunday 
School Class at Big Springs Baptist Church.

Lois F. Brand

   (LANETT) Lois F. Brand, 64, of Lanett, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at her 
daughter's residence.
   Mrs. Brand was an Alabama native, born Nov. 7, 1936.  She was a licensed practical 
nurse who worked in LaFayette and LaGrange, Ga.  She was a member of Old Path 
Christian Center.
   Surviving are a daughter, Vickie Reeme of Lanett; a brother, Dorsey Florence of 
Roanoke; two grandsons, a granddaughter; five nieces, six nephews, six great-nieces and 
three great-nephews.
   Services were at Old Path Christian Center, Beulah, at 2 p.m. (EDT) on Tuesday, March 
17, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery.  Pastor Bill Bryan officiated.
   Donations in memory of Mrs. Brand may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice or Old 
Path Christian Center.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

James M. 'Bud' Waldrep

   (BREWTON) James M. "Bud" Waldrep, 71, of Brewton, died Wednesday, April 11, 
2001, at his residence after an extended illness.
   A Roanoke native, Mr. Waldrep was the son of the late Dallas and Mittie Mickle 
Waldrep.  He was retired from Procoaters of Atlanta, Ga., in metal fabrication and was a 
member of First Baptist Church Brewton and was a Mason.
   Survivors include his wife, Bertie Bruson Waldrep of Brewton; one son, Larry Waldrep 
of Brewton; two daughters, Janette Abbuehl of Wisconsin and Annette Ortega of Texas; 
three brothers, Gene Waldrep of Columbia, S.C., Dr. Tom Waldrep of Charleston, S.C., 
and Billy Waldrep of Roanoke; two sisters, Janie Waldrep of Conyers, Ga., and Agnes 
Smith of Louisiana; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Services were Friday, April 13, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Brewton, with the 
Rev. John Finklea and the Rev. Robert Butler officiating.  Interment was in Union 
Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Williams Memorial Chapel, Brewton.

Carey Powell

   (ATMORE) Carey Powell, 88, a long-time resident of Atmore and recently a resident of 
Williamsburg Manor in Roanoke, died Easter Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Carraway 
Hospital in Birmingham.
   Mr. Powell was the father of Mary Manning of Roanoke.
   Services will be in Atmore at Johnson Quimby Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 18, 
at 1 p.m.
   The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to First Baptist 
Church of Roanoke for "A Walk with the Carpenter's Son."

   (ROANOKE) Agnes Boddie Pate, 85, of Roanoke died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at 
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Survivors include her husband, Clyde Ceroy Pate of Roanoke; one son Amos James 
Boddie Sr. of Atlanta, Ga.; three daughters, Ottis B. Rowe of Atlanta, Bernice B. 
Shannon of Los Angeles, Calif., and Gwendolyn B. Oliver of Roanoke; nine stepchildren, 
Ronald and Travis Pate of Roanoke, Herman Pate of Anniston, Carolyn Adams of 
LaGrange, Ga. Rebecca Hishida and Mattie Safford of Roanoke, Mary Phillips of 
Houston, Texas, Johnnie Rachel of Englewood, Calif., and Merecia Johnson of Anniston; 
two sisters-in-law; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives 
and friends.
   Services will be Thursday, April 19, at 11 a.m. at Peach and Good Will Baptist Church, 
1465 Martin Luther King Drive, Roanoke, with the Rev. L. B. Houston, pastor, 
officiating.  Interment will be in Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery, Welch.
   Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.  The family will have a wake at 
Silmon Mortuary from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Burma Rae Washington Abernathy

   (ROANOKE) Services for Burma Rae Washington Abernathy, 87, of Roanoke will be 
Thursday, April 19, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Roanoke First United Methodist Church, with the 
Rev. Tex Ergle officiating.  Burial will be in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Abernathy died Monday, April 16, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on Aug. 3, 1913, the daughter of Joseph D. 
Washington and Docie Burns Washington.  She was self-employed as a beautician and 
was a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church, the Philathea Sunday school 
class, and United Methodist Women.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel 
Frank Abernathy.
   Survivors include a daughter, Ila Faye Miller of Birmingham; a sister, Idell Parker of 
Woodland; and two grandsons.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. on 
Wednesday.  Mrs. Abernathy will lie in state at the church for 30 minutes beginning at 
10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Mary Edna Bennett

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mary Edna Bennett, 83, of Roanoke were Thursday, April 
19, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jamie Taylor officiating.  
Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Bennett died Tuesday, April 17, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on March 27, 1918, daughter of John Walter and 
Eugenia Mayfield Stephens.  She was employed at Stephanie Fashions and was a member 
of Paran Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Bennett, a 
daughter, Retha Joan Bennett, and a son, Bennie Tillmon Bennett.
   Survivors include a daughter, Linda Manley of Roanoke; a son, Waymon (Ted) Bennett 
of Roanoke; a sister, Velma Drummonds of Woodland; and one grandchild.

John William 'Bill' Waldrep

   (ROANOKE) Services for John William "Bill" Waldrep, 69, of Roanoke were Thursday,

   Mr. Waldrep died suddenly on Tuesday, April 17, at Randolph Medical Center in 
Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born on Dec. 3, 1931, son of Dallas 
Eugene and Mittie Mickle Waldrep.  He had been employed at Amoco Fabrics and Fibers 
and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Gladys Faye Waldrep of Roanoke; a son, Richard Allen 
Waldrep of Roanoke; two sisters, Agnes Smith of Pineville, La., and Janie Waldrep of 
Conyers, Ga.; two brothers, Wesley E. Waldrep of Columbia, S.C., and Tom Waldrep of 
Charleston, S.C.; a granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Robbie Jean Lewis

   (WOODLAND) Service for Mrs. Robbie Jean Lewis, 64, of Woodland were Saturday,

   Mrs. Lewis died suddenly on Thursday, April 19, at Wedowee Hospital.
   She was born in Troup County, Ga., on Feb. 10, 1937, daughter of Lloyd and Bernice 
Cook Cummings.  She had been employed at Wedowee Hospital and was a member of 
Flat Rock Congregational Methodist Church, where she was a member of WMS.
   Survivors include her husband, William T. Lewis of Woodland; her mother, Bernice 
Cummings of LaGrange; two daughters, Pattie Sweet of Collierville, Tenn., and Wanda 
Crow of Pine Mountain, Ga.; two sons, Tommy Lewis of Woodland and Keith Lewis of 
Graham; a brother, Sonny Cummings of LaGrange; and ten grandchildren.
   Pallbearers Clarence Lewis, George Lewis Jr., Ricky Bailey, Grey Bailey, Calvin 
Meadows and Derrick Wilson.

Edward Lee Morgan

   (ROANOKE) Edward Lee Morgan, 57, of Roanoke died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at 
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services will be Wednesday, April 25, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 549 Riley St., 
Roanoke, with the Rev. Gilbert E. Staples, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in the Finley 
Family Cemetery, LaFayette.
   Survivors include three sons, Gary Morgan and Kenneth Morgan of Roanoke and 
Timmie Morgan of Franklin, Ga.; two daughters, Kathy D. Morgan and Beverly Ann 
Morgan of Roanoke; a stepdaughter, Cherita James of Welch; his former wife, Dollie R. 
Morgan of Roanoke; a special friend and companion, Essie Lee Oliver of Welch; four 
brothers, George Morgan, Johnny Frank Morgan and Bobby Mack Morgan of Roanoke 
and Raymond Morgan of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Katie R. Whitlow, Mary D. Baker 
and Sharon Whitestone of Roanoke; seven grandchildren; two aunts; and 27 nieces and 
nephews.
   Mr. Morgan will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services.
   Mr. Morgan is the seventh of 12 children of the late Wash and Dona Finely Morgan.  He 
is preceded in death by both parents; three brothers, Wash Morgan Jr., Forest Morgan and 
Clifford Morgan; a sister, Annie Bell Morgan Sims; and a son Jessie Lamont Morgan.  He 
grew up in Roanoke and graduated from Randolph County Training School in 1966.  As a 
student, he was an all-around athlete.  Mr. Morgan was fondly known as "Knot" to all of 
his close friends and relatives.  He was a life-long member of First Baptist Church and 
worked for many years at Master Door Company, JLM Manufacturing and Probilt 
Manufacturing.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Susie Mae Messer, 94, of Wedowee were Saturday, April

   Mrs. Messer died Thursday, April 19, at Roanoke Healthcare Center in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on March 5, 1907, daughter of Roy E. Messer and 
Laura R. Parker Messer.  She had been employed with the Oak Ridge Atomic Energy 
Commission and was a member of Wedowee Senior Citizens and Ava United Methodist 
Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Charlie and Lee 
Messer.
   Survivors include a sister, Sara Smith of Oak Ridge, Tenn,; a sister-in-law, Pauline 
Messer of New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Joe L. Messer, Brandon Messer, Barry L. Messer, Barry Lee Messer,

Bennie Fred Shaw

   (WOODLAND) Services for Bennie Fred Shaw, 69, of Woodland were Monday, April

W. C. Cofield officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Shaw died Saturday, April 21, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mr. Shaw was born in Randolph County on Feb 27, 1932, son of Fred and Lola Irwin 
Shaw.  He was a veteran who served in the Army.  He had also lived in Ohio for several 
years prior to returning to Randolph County.
   Mr. Shaw is survived by his wife, Betty Edmondson Shaw of Woodland; two sons, 
Terry Shaw of Columbia, Md., and Dwight Shaw of Franklin Furns, Ohio; one brother, 
Billy Harlon Shaw of Woodland; and three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jonathon Page, H. E. Daniel, Barney Brown, James Stewart, Jeramy

   Mrs. Ferrell died Saturday, April 21, at her home.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Ferrell was born Feb. 27, 1912, daughter of 
Bob and Rebecca Burdett Kirby.  She was a homemaker, a member of Faith Baptist 
Church and the widow of Grady Ferrell.
   Survivors include two daughters, Betty Hodges of Wadley and Annie Noles of Roanoke; 
one brother, Okley Kirby of Lanett; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one 
great-great-grandchild.

   Mrs. Brown died Friday, April 20, in Standing Rock followed an extended illness.
   She was born in Randolph County on March 17, 1925, daughter of George Coy Jacks 
and Caldonia McCain Jacks.  She was a homemaker and a member of Community Baptist 
Church in LaFayette.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Brown.
   Survivors include three daughters, Shelia Harper of Columbus, Ga., Lois Owens of 
Rock Mills and Diane Mitchell of Standing Rock; two sons, Jack Brown of Wedowee and 
Charlie Brown of Roanoke; a brother, Homer Jacks of Talladega; 12 grandchildren and 22 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Rick McKinley, Jim Brown, Fitzgerald Brown, Thomas Boggs, Tony 
Brown, Fabian Richardson and Phillip Johnson.

Mary Izora Barsh Bassett

   (EAST DUBLIN, Ga.) Services for Mary Izora Bassett, 87, of East Dublin, Ga., will be 
at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at East Dublin Baptist Church, with burial in 
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Roanoke, at 3:30 p.m. CDT.  Dr. Keith Tipton, 
the Rev. Ronnie Powell, Dr. Frederick Bassett and Michael Bassett will officiate.
   Mrs. Bassett died Monday, April 23, at her home.
   Mrs. Bassett was a native of Randolph county, Ala., daughter of the late Sarah Obela 
Veal Barsh and the late George Washington Barsh.  She was a member of East Dublin 
Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her daughters, Rhoda Jane Bassett and 
Dianne B. Avery.  She was a homemaker and was the widow of the late Leon Frederick 
Bassett.
   Survivors include nine children, Sara B. Pendergrass, George A. Bassett and Martha B. 
Pollard of East Dublin, Dr. Frederick W. Bassett of Hilton Head, S.C., Lynda B. 
Anderson of Jacksonville, Fla., Paul M. Bassett and Joan B. Ray of Macon, Ga., Kathy B. 
Roberts of Roanoke and John M. Bassett Sr. of Dublin Ga.; 28 grandchildren; 27 great- 
grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a children's home of the contributor's 
choice in memory of Mrs. Bassett.
