OBITUARIES:

Rene Sanders

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mr. Rene Sanders, 48, of Roanoke were Friday, April 27, 
2001, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Roger Florence and the Rev. 
Cecil Halsey officiating.  Burial was in Potash Cemetery.
   Mr. Sanders died Wednesday, April 25, at Columbus Medical Center.
   Mr. Sanders was a native of Randolph County, born Oct 8, 1952, son of Anthony F. 
Sanders Jr. and Bonnie Lee Bowen Sanders.  He was a self-employed automobile 
mechanic.  He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Don Sanders.
   Mr. Sanders is survived by his mother, Bonnie Lee Sanders of Roanoke and three 
brothers, Richard Sanders, Rodney Sanders and Todd Sanders, all of Roanoke.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Dianne Poore

   (FIVE POINTS) Dianne Poore, 47, of Five Points died Sunday, April 29, 2001 at UAB 
Hospital, Birmingham.
   Services were at Shiloh Baptist Church on Tuesday, May 1, at 1 p.m., with the 
interment in the church cemetery.  The Rev. Eugene Stribling and the Rev. Thomas 
Boykin officiated.
   Mrs. Poore was a native of Chambers County, born March 27, 1954, daughter of Jack 
Abernathy and the late Eunice Mae Abernathy.  She was a member of Shiloh Baptist 
Church in Chambers County.
   Surviving are her husband, Billy Joe Poore of Five Points; two sons, Bryan Rape of 
Roanoke and Gary Rape of Alex City; three step-children, Amber Poore, Brent Sheppard 
and Miles Sheppard of Five Points; three sisters, Mary Anne DeLee of Five Points, Jackie 
Smallwood of Roanoke and Patricia Knowles of Lanett; one brother, Charles Kelley of 
Valley; her father and two grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Rosa Nell Henson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Rosa Nell Henson, 77, of Roanoke were Saturday, April 28, 
2001, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Tex Ergle and Gary 
Baugh officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Henson died Thursday, April 26, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A 47-year resident of Greenville, Mrs. Henson move to Roanoke in 1992.  She was a 
Guin, Marion County native, born Sept. 29, 1923, daughter of Cicero and Rose Etta 
Hightower Franks.  She had worked as the head bookkeeper at First National Bank, 
Greenville, and was a member of the Business Professional Women's Club.  She was a 
member of First United Methodist Church in Roanoke.  Mrs. Henson was preceded in 
death by her parents; her husband, Floyd James Henson; a sister, Mary Helen Hodges; and 
a brother, William "Buster" Franks.
   Survivors include two sons, Floyd L. Henson of Greenville and Philip G. Henson of 
Roanoke; six sisters, Peggy Hayes, Norma Burttram, Judy Smith, Jenny Bryant and Patsy 
Uptain, all of Jasper, and Lucile Harper of Greenville; one brother, Junior Franks of 
Jasper; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   The family suggests memorial donations to Alzheimer's Association (919 N. Michigan 
Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-1676) or to Roanoke First United Methodist Church 
Family Life Center (P.O. Box 40, Roanoke, AL 36274)
   Pallbearers were grandson Wesley Henson, nephews Ronnie Buttram and Mike Harper, 
Whit Welch, Jeremy Revis and George Childress.

Patsy Lee Wood

   (FIVE POINTS) Services for Patsy Lee Wood, 56, of Five Points were Thursday, May 
3, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Greathouse 
officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Wood died Tuesday, May 1, at her home.
   A native of Harriman, Tenn., and a former resident of Huguley, she was born Jan. 5, 
1945, daughter of Preston and Irene Jones Edmonds.  She was a homemaker and a 
member of Northside Baptist Church in West Point, Ga.
   Survivors include her husband, John Wood of Five Points; two sons, Mark Wood of 
Five Points and Troy Wood of Roanoke; a sister Peggy Henck of Kingston, Tenn.; a 
brother, Don Edmonds of Anaheim, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Lynn Richardson, Ricky Fincher, Samuel Wood and James Wood.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Danny Joe Wright

   (WADLEY) Services for Danny Joe Wright, 42, of Wadley were Friday, May 4, 2001, 
at 2 p.m. at Forrester's Chapel Methodist Church, with the Revs. Claude Bennett and 
Glover McCormick Jr. officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Wright died suddenly on Tuesday, May 1, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born on June 9, 1958, son of Herbert 
and Inez Mae Wright.  He had been employed with Noles Logging.  He was preceded in 
death by his father, Herbert Denny Wright, and a nephew, James Herbert Dunn.
   Survivors include his mother, Inez Mae Wright of Wadley; three sisters, Dianne 
McCormick, Christine Williams and Joyce Wright, all of Wadley; three nephews and five 
nieces.
   Pallbearers were Sonny McCormick, Jeremy McCormick, Nicholas Williams, Glover 
McCormick Jr., Jason Vowell and Jason Carson.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Mary Will Dodgen Boone

   (FIVE POINTS) Mary Will Dodgen Boone, 80, of Five Points died Wednesday, May 2, 
2001, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Mrs. Dodgen was a Chambers County native, born March 14, 1921.  She had worked at 
West Point Pepperell's Lanett Mill and was the owner and operator of a convenience store 
in Five Points.  She was a member of State Line Congregational Christian Church.
   Surviving are a son, Jack Boone of Five Points; two brothers, Walter Dodgen of 
Shawmut and J. C. Dodgen of Five Points; and two grandchildren.
   Graveside services were Saturday, May 5, at 11 a.m. EDT at Stateline Congregational 
Christian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Leo Fowler officiating.
   The family respectfully asks that memorial donations be made to Stateline 
Congregational Christian Church.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Lanett.

Judy Stone Harmon

   (ROANOKE) Service for Judy Stone Harmon, 51, of Roanoke, formerly of Tucker, 
Ga., were Sunday, May 6, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Bernard Fuller officiating.  Burial was at Rock Springs Cemetery.
   Mrs. Harmon died Wednesday, May 2, at her home.
   She was born in Randolph County on Aug. 29, 1949, daughter of Norman and Loneda 
Waldrep Stone.  She had been employed with Bell South and was a member or Rock 
Springs Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Norma 
Nichols.
   Survivors include a daughter, Julie Wylie of Atlanta; her fiance, James Watson of 
Roanoke; and two brothers, Curtis Stone of Canon City, Colo., and Corbin Stone of 
Baton Rouge, La.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Marion Junior Richardson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Marion Junior Richardson, 57, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
May 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Sonny McCormick 
and Jimmy Mitchell officiating.  Burial was in Potash Cemetery.
   Mr. Richardson died Thursday, May 3, at his home.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born on Jan. 31, 1944, son of Kaylor 
and Vera Wood Richardson.  He had been employed with East Alabama Lumber 
Company and was a member of Midway Full Gospel Church.  He was preceded in death 
by his father, a daughter, Tina Pender, and a brother, Ray Richardson.
   Survivors include [his wife, Brenda Richardson of Roanoke], four daughters, Lori 
Wellborn, Sherri Stephens and Jessica Ball, all of Roanoke, and Angela Oberts of Lanett; 
his mother, Vera Richardson of Opelika; five sisters, Lurline Cole and Myrtle Heard of 
Roanoke, Jewell Fisher of Zebulon, Ga., Judy Randall of South Carolina, and Dianne 
Terry of Phenix City; four brothers, Flay Richardson of Rome, Ga., Hershel Richardson of 
Lagrange, Ga., Sherrel Richardson and Jimmy Richardson of Roanoke; and 14 grand- 
children.
   Pallbearers were Michael Whaley, James Whaley, Christopher Whaley, Blake Jones, 
Daniel Brown and Steve Brown.  Honorary pallbearers were Danny Akins and Chris 
Gunn.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Edward Earl Sledge Sr.

   (SNOW CAMP, N.C.) Edward "Ed" Earl Sledge Sr., 64, of Snow Camp, N.C., died 
Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Chatham Hospital in Siler City after a sudden illness.
   A native of Roanoke, he was the husband of Carol Lee Sledge, who survives, and the 
son of L. K. Sledge and Mary Evelyn Faulkner Sledge, both deceased.  He was retired 
after 33 years with the F. W. Woolworth Company, where he held positions of district 
manager and manager.  He had worked for Rose Discount Warehouse for the past five 
years.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was on active duty for four 
years and two years with the Marine Corps Reserves.  He was a sergeant and participated 
in the Lebanese crisis as part of a military police unit.  He was a member of Rock Creek 
Methodist Church, were he served as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday School 
teacher for the Friendship Class, and as a lay leader of the church.
   Other survivors include a daughter, Adrian Carole Sledge of High Point, N.C.; three 
sons, Edward Earl Sledge Jr. of Hillsborough, N.C., and David Frank Sledge and Richard 
Myrle Sledge of Burlington, N.C.; a brother, Calvin R. Sledge of Roanoke; and a 
grandchild.
   He was preceded in death by five brothers, Laurine Kline Sledge, Harold Sledge, Bobby 
Gene Sledge, Cecil Sledge and Jerry Lee Sledge.
   Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, April 21, at Rock Creek United Methodist Church by 
the Rev. Nancy Sturdivant, pastor, and the Rev. David McHale, former pastor.  Burial 
was in the church cemetery.

George W. Posey

   (FIVE POINTS) George W. Posey, 80, of Five Points died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 
his residence.
   Mr. Posey was a Georgia native, born Sept 5, 1920, son of the late Sara Frances Posey 
and the late Willie Newman Posey.  He had been a truck driver for more than 60 years.  
He was of the Baptist faith.
   Survivors include a brother, Claudie Posey of LaGrange, Ga.; a sister, Willie Lindsey of 
Five Points; and several nieces and nephews.
   Graveside services were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, at Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett.  
The Rev. David Copeland officiated.
   The family respectfully declines the gift of flowers and asks that donations be made to 
Chattahoochee Hospice in his memory.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Gladys Parmer Bassett

   (ROANOKE) Services for Gladys Parmer Bassett, 78, of Roanoke were Tuesday, May 
8, 2001, at 11 a.m., at Rock Stand Congregational Christian Church, with the Rev. 
Kenneth Johnson and the Rev. Wayne Cowhick officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Bassett died Sunday, May 6, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   Mrs. Bassett was born in Randolph county on Aug. 23, 1922, daughter of Monroe 
Parmer and Sallie Gore Parmer.  She was retired from Palm Beach Manufacturing and was 
a member of Rock Stand Congregational Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by 
her husband, Wiley Byrd Bassett.
   Mrs. Bassett is survived by three daughters, Wylodene Clark of Roanoke, Juanita 
Ussery of McDonough, Ga., and Margaret Myers of Pikeville, Tenn,; two sons, Billy 
Bassett of Wedowee and Kim Bassett of Ashland; one sister, Mary Lee Noles of Smyrna, 
Ga.; one brother, Y. C. Parmer of Roanoke; nine grandchildren and ten 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Keith Parmer, Jerry Noles, Billy Wood, Wendell Parmer, C. W. Perry 
and Barry Johnson.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

John Tom McCollough Sr.

   (LANETT) John Tom McCollough Sr., 65, of Lanett died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 
Lanier Memorial Hospital.
   Mr. McCollough was born in Randolph County Oct. 10 1935, son of Annie Lois 
McCollough and the late Percy H. McCollough.  He had retired from the U.S. Air Force 
after 20 years of Service, including service in Vietnam.  He was formerly employed with 
McClendon Trucking in LaFayette.  He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and 
commander of a veterans association.
   Surviving are his wife, Patricia M. McCollough of Lanett; two daughters, Sherry 
Calaway of Valley and Melody Brown of Panama City, Fla.; two sons, John Tom 
McCollough Jr. of Montgomery and Kacey Manley of Phenix City; a brother, George A. 
McCollough of Valley; his mother of Lanett; six grandchildren and two 
great-grandchildren.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 4 p.m. on 
Tuesday, May 8, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.  The Rev. Billy Clark and the Rev. 
Jim Dykes officiated.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Tammy Mae Williamson

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Tammy Mae Williamson, 30, of Franklin, Ga., died Friday, May 4, 
2001, at Atlanta Medical Center.
   Mrs. Williamson was born Aug. 23, 1970, in Carroll County, Ga., daughter of Marion 
and Charity Madden Terrell.  She was employed by Homeplace Distribution Center's 
Maintenance Department in Newnan, Ga.
   Survivors include her husband, Randy Williamson of Franklin; her parents of Bowdon, 
Ga.; a daughter, Erica Lynn Williamson of Franklin; a brother, Tracy Lee Terrell of 
Bowdon; two sisters, Tina Carden of Bowdon and Tabathy Yates of Carrollton, Ga.; and 
her parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Williamson of Fruithurst.
   Services were at 4 p.m. Monday, May 7, at Rainwater-West Funeral Home Chapel, 
Bowdon, with the Rev. Marc Curler, the Rev. Doug Bingham and Mr. John Todd 
officiating.  Burial was in the Valley Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Randolph County.  
Music was by Debbie Whitlock.  Pallbearers were Glenn Skinner, Richard Kane, Gene 
Terrell, Anthony Terrell, Jimmy Dubose and Patrick Dubose.
   Arrangements were by Rainwater and West Funeral Home, Bowdon.

Donnie Wade Anglin

   (DECATUR, Ga.) Services for Donnie Wade Anglin, 41, of Decatur, Ga., formerly of 
Rock Mills, were Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with 
the Rev. Gerald Sheppard officiating.  Burial was at Knight Cemetery.
   Mr. Anglin died Sunday, May 6, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
   He was born in Randolph County on Feb. 16, 1960, son of James Alvin and Eris Watson 
Anglin.  He was employed as a painter and was a Baptist.
   Survivors include his wife, Cecelia Anglin of Decatur; a son, Richard Alan Saturday of 
Decatur; his parents, James and Catherine Eris Anglin of Rock Mills; and a brother, 
Johnny Anglin of Rock Mills.
   Pallbearers were Mike White, Terry Crain, Jeff Walden, Jimmy Lynn Watson, Charlie 
Sheppard and Delbert Watson.

Bertha Reaves Williams

   (ROANOKE) Services for Bertha Reaves Williams, 96, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, 
May 9, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Frank McCook 
officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Williams died Monday, May 7, in Five Points.
   A native of Randolph County, she was born March 26, 1905, daughter of John and 
Mary Reaves.  She was retired for Handley Mills and was a member of North Main 
Congregational Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul C. 
Williams; her parents; three sisters, Eula Burgess, Lucille Jenkins and Mamie Morman; 
and two brothers, Charlie Reaves and Johnny Reaves.
   Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Sudduth of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Bulah Foster 
of Lanett; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Memorial contributions may be floral or donations can be made to North Main 
Congregational Christian Church, 1424 Main St., Roanoke, AL 36274.

Dessie B. Williams

   (NEWELL) Services for Dessie B. Williams, 91, of Newell were Tuesday, May 8, 2001, 
at 2 p.m. at Smyrna Baptist Church, with the Rev. Brian Smith officiating.  Burial was in 
the adjoining church cemetery.
   Miss Williams died Sunday, May 6, at Pine Knoll Nursing Home in Carrollton, Ga.
   She was born in Randolph County on Oct. 22, 1910, daughter of Bass and Carrie Ellen 
Nolen Williams.  She was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church.  Miss Williams was 
preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.
   Survivors include a sister, L. C. Stewart of Newell, and nine nieces.
   Pallbearers were Robert Hurst, Jimmy Mitchell, Hollis Hall, Carroll Brock, Barry Daniel 
and Benny Akins.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Dorothy Ann Marable Wilbur

   (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Dorothy Ann Marable Wilbur, 54, of Columbus, Ga., died 
Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Saint Francis Hospital, Columbus.
   Services will be Thursday, May 10, at 3 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, 
Woodland Drive, Wedowee, with the Rev. Henry Nelson officiating.  Burial will be in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include her husband, James Wilbur of Columbus; two sons, Willie Carter and 
Demetrius Marable of Wedowee; three daughters, Mrs. Brenda Parker and Ms. Veronica 
Marable of Columbus and Mrs. Lisa McElrath of Alexander City; six brothers, John L. 
Sheppard of Atlanta, Frank Sheppard of Chattanooga, Tenn., Roy Lee Sheppard of 
Gasden, Booker T. Sheppard of Wedowee, and James E. Sheppard and Willie Frank 
Sheppard of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Hunter of Barfield and Ms. Josephine 
Morgan of Bowdon, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; two uncles and four aunts.
   Visiting hours will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service in Roanoke on Wednesday, 
after 10 a.m.  Mrs. Wilbur will lie in state in the church one hour prior to services.
   Mrs. Wilbur was the oldest of 14 children born to the late Andrew Johnson and Bessie 
Pauline (Henderson)Sheppard.  She was born in Wedowee Oct. 25, 1946.  She is 
preceded in death by one brother, two sisters and two siblings who died during infancy.  
She was formerly married to James Marable of Wedowee and later married James Wilbur 
of Columbus.  In Columbus she owned and operated "Sims Soul Food" restaurant and was 
well known and respected for her culinary skills, providing catering services for numerous 
organizations throughout the Columbus area.  She was a member of Union Chapel United 
Methodist Church, Wedowee.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service.

Sara Elizabeth Sears

   (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Services for Sara Elizabeth Sears, 74, of Columbus, Ga., formerly 
of Roanoke, will be Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at noon at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, 
with Dr. Douglas Turner and Dr. E. D. Helton officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph 
Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Sears died Sunday, May 6, at Columbus Hospice.
   A Greer, S.C. native and long-time Roanoke resident, Mrs. Sears was born Nov. 17, 
1926, daughter of Elbert and Ruth Miller Mooney.  She was a homemaker and the widow 
of James Howard Sears.  Mrs. Sears had moved to Columbus four years ago and was a 
member at Morning Side Baptist Church in Columbus.
   Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Donald Gates of Columbus, 
Ga; one sister, Nora Hart Jackson of Greer, S.C.; and two step-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers are Harl White, John Landers, Tommy Cato, Jim McKinney, Frank Phillips 
and Steve Dean.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Columbus Hospice (7020 
Moon Road, Columbus, GA 31909).

Martin Johnson

   (WEDOWEE) Martin Leophas Johnson, 61, of Wedowee died Monday, April 30, 2001, 
at his residence.
   Services were Friday, May 11, at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church, 
Wedowee, with burial in Wedowee.
   Survivors include two sons, Jamal and Aaron Johnson of Dayton, Ohio; five daughters, 
Tonja Alishe of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Tara Bell and Danielle of San Francisco, Calif., 
and Rachael and Rebecca of Dayton; six grandchildren; three brothers, Royal M. Johnson 
of Detroit, Mich., and Vernon C. Johnson and Floyd S. Johnson of Dayton; six sisters, 
Mrs. Jaruth Jefferson, Ms. Della Delois Johnson, Mr. Jeanette B. Arnold, Mrs. Barbara J. 
Patton and Ms. Anna P. Fields, all of Dayton, and Ms. Florine Vance of Detroit; his 
former wife, Ms. Sandra L. Peagler of Sacramento; a special friend, Ms. Karen Sue 
Funderberg of Dayton; and a special sister-in-law, Mrs. Marcia Johnson of Dayton.
   Mr. Johnson was the third of 11 children of Willie Cephas Johnson and Ida Bell 
Birdsong.  He was born in Malone on May 29, 1939, where he spent his childhood and 
numerous other years.  He also resided in Dayton, Ohio, and San Francisco, Calif.  He was 
preceded in death by his father, mother, five-month-old son Martin Leophas "Marty" 
Johnson Jr., and a brother, Willie Wallace Johnson.  Mr. Johnson was retired after many

   Mrs. Vice died Saturday, May 5, at her home.

Moore of Phenix City; a son Chris Porter of Phenix City; two brothers, Donald Holloway

Clifford Ray Shelnutt

   (FAYETTEVILLE) Clifford Ray Shelnutt, 64, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, on the 
Childersburg-Fayetteville Highway.
   Mr. Shelnutt was born June 27, 1936, son of the late Walter Lee Shelnutt Jr. and the late 
Betty Ford.  He was an Army veteran and was marketing manager of Merryweather Foam.
   Mr. Shelnutt is survived by his wife of 40 years, Beverly Shelnutt of Fayetteville; two 
sons, Tim Shelnutt of Fayetteville and Scott Shelnutt of Chelsea; six brothers, Frank 
Shelnutt of St. Louis, Mo., James Shelnutt of Childersburg, Sammy Shelnutt of Sylacauga, 
Doyle Shelnutt and Grady Shelnutt of Wedowee, and Calvin Shelnutt of Birmingham; 
three sisters, Irma Boyd of Wedowee, Ada Hallman of Sylacauga, and Mary Jo Brocker of 
Moncure, N.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Services were at Radney-Smith Funeral Chapel, Sylacauga, on Friday, May 11, at 2 
p.m., with the Rev. Mike Kiser and the Rev. Cary Brown officiating.  Interment was in 
Fayetteville Methodist Cemetery.

   (WOODLAND) Services for Lila Frank Goode, 73, of Woodland were Thursday, May

   Mrs. Goode died Tuesday, May 8, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born on March 21, 1928, daughter of 
Jim B. and Eva E. McCarley Rampy.  She had been employed with Lamar Manufacturing 
and was a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Cecil A. Goode of Woodland; a son, Kenneth Goode of 
Woodland; two sisters, Isabell Harrington of Riverdale, Ga., and Jeanette Holloway of 
Wedowee; three brothers, J. C. Rampy, Bob Rampy and Hobart Rampy, all of Woodland; 
three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Bessie Jane Bailey, 83, of Roanoke will be Thursday, May

   Mrs. Bailey died Monday, May 14, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   A life-long Randolph County resident, Mrs. Bailey was born Sept. 28, 1917, in Atlanta, 
Ga., daughter of Sam and Awbrey Sherrard Cole.  She was a homemaker and a member of 
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Roanoke.
   Survivors include two sons, Stanley C. Bailey and Warner Bailey, both of Roanoke; five 
grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
   Visitation at the funeral home will be for 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Neil Bailey, Brandon Bailey, Bill Vinson, Billy Pike, Mike Reis and

Mavis Cofield Heermans

   (SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif.) Mavis Cofield Heermans, a former resident of 
Birmingham, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.  She was a 
member of Huffman Baptist Church, Birmingham, a graduate of Jacksonville State 
Teacher College, and a public school teacher for more than 40 years.  She is remembered 
as a dedicated educator in Randolph and Calhoun counties and the Anniston City School 
system from which she retired.  Her last 10 years of teaching (1976-86) were in 
Capistrano Baptist School, Calif.
   Services were at Huffman Baptist Church on Thursday, May 10, with burial in Jefferson 
Memorial Gardens, Trussville.  The Rev. Larry Smith officiated.
   Mrs. Heermans is survived by her son, Charles Heermans; her daughter Annie 
Evergreen; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Wilma Cofield Carter 
of Birmingham; a brother, Robert Cecil Cofield of Anniston; and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers were her son, Charles, grandson Isaiah, and four nephews, Weyman Fussell, 
David Fussell, Skip Cofield and Chris Cofield.

a member of Wayside Baptist Church in Coosa County.

from 1942 to 1945.  He was employed at Handley Mills and Amoco Fabrics and Fibers,

Home Demonstration Club and First Baptist Church of Wedowee.  She was preceded in 
death by her husband, W. Earl Rogers.

Squad for 14 years, and a member of Zion Church of God.  He was preceded in death by 
his parents, Avery and Mary Yarbrough Sheppard; two children, Jerry Sheppard and 
Linda Johnson; three sisters and two brothers.
   Mr. Sheppard is survived by his wife, Ethleen Sheppard of Lineville; one daughter, 
Karen Sheppard Hammock of Lineville; two sons, Terry Sheppard and Don Sheppard of

Grover Ellis Brown Sr.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Grover Ellis Brown Sr., 76, of LaGrange died Sunday, May 20, 
2001, at his home after a lengthy illness.
   The son of the late Millard Coleman Brown and Mary Wilson Brown, Mr. Brown was 
born in Randolph County, Ala., June 17 1924, and lived most of his life in the Troup 
County, Ga., area.
   He served in World War II from 1943 until 1946.  A combat soldier in the 385th 
Anti-aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, he received the European African 
Middle Eastern Service Medal with the Silver Star and the World War II Victory Medal.
   Mr. Brown worked for Callaway Mills Company and retired from the LaGrange Fire 
Department with 30 years as a firefighter and lieutenant.  The latter years of his life, he 
was a farmer and cattleman, operating his own farm.  Mr. Brown was a former member of 
the first Civil Defense unit in Troup County.  He was a charter member of Broad Street 
Church of Christ and a member of Northside Church of Christ, and for many years a 
member of Mt. Carmel Church of Christ.
   Mr. Brown is survived by his wife of 58 years, Velma Irene Prescott Brown; a son, 
Grover Ellis Brown, Jr.; a daughter, Cynthia Brown; eight grandchildren; two sisters, 
Lorene Morrow of LaGrange and Ann Howell of Birmingham; a brother, C. W. Brown; 
two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
   Graveside services were at 1 p.m. (CDT) Tuesday, May 22, at Mt. Carmel Church of 
Christ Cemetery in Randolph County.
   In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish to do so may contribute to

   (WEDOWEE) Vicie L. Kimble, 81, of County Road 33, Wedowee, died Friday, May 
18, 2001, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 25, at Friendship Baptist Church, County 
Road 26, Wadley, with the Rev. Calvin Trammell and Elder Thomas Knight officiating.  
Burial will be in Pine Flat Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, County Road 16, 
Wedowee.
   Survivors include her husband, James Ralph Kimble of Wedowee; four daughters, Mrs. 
Rebecca Marboro of Carson City, Calif.,  Mrs. Recie Bailey and Mrs. Patricia Rogers of 
Wedowee, and Mrs. Myrtice Williams of Los Angeles, Calif.; six sons, James Ralph 
Kimble Jr. and Herbert Kimble of Wedowee, Robert Kimble of Indiana, King V. Kimble 
and Johnny Kimble of Anniston, and Benny Kimble of Barfield; her step-mother, Ms. Era 
Knight of Wedowee; four brothers, Charlie Lee Knight and Robert Knight of Birmingham, 
K. V. Knight of Wedowee and David Knight of Carrollton, Ga.; one sister, Mildred Battle 
of Los Angeles, Calif.; one stepsister, Ms. Fannie Maude Berry of Wedowee; 24 
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Kimble was born Nov. 5, 1919, daughter of the late Robert Knight and Sally 
Fannie Thompson Knight.  She was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.  
She was a homemaker and a wife of 59 years.  At an early age she joined Pine Flat 
Primitive Baptist, the church of her family, and later was a devoted member of Friendship 
Baptist Church.  In recent years she enjoyed traveling with her family to other states to 
spend time with her children and grandchildren.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Services, Roanoke.

Mae Ruth Clark

   (BROOKLYN, N.Y.) Mae Ruth Clark, 77, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Wednesday, May 
16, 2001, at Brooklyn Hospital Center.
   Services will be Wednesday, May 23, at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. William Phillips, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Skyview 
Memorial Gardens, Welch.
   Survivors include two sisters, Ms. Ruby Hill of Atlanta, Ga., and Ms. Emma Jean 
McFarland of Roanoke; one uncle, James Allen of Five Points; two aunts, Mrs. Sallie 
Allen of Five Points and Ms. Cora Oliver of Roanoke; and several nieces, nephews, 
great-nieces and nephews, and cousins.
   Mrs. Clark will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service.
   Mrs. Clark was born April 11, 1924, in Chambers County, daughter of the late Rufus 
and Essie Mae Allen Clark.  At an early age, she joined Saint Paul Missionary Baptist 
Church.  She was married to Ozell Hines, and they had one son Charlie Frank who 
preceded her in death.  Mrs. Clark migrated to New York about 40 years ago, coming 
home yearly to visit with family in Roanoke.  Ms. Clark was a retired laundry technician of 
35 years at Cascade Laundry in Brooklyn.  She attended First Corinthian Baptist Church 
for more than 20 years and at the time of her death was a member of All People's 
Institutional Church of God.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Robert Junior Green

   (BOWDON, Ga.)  Robert Junior Green, 66, of Bowdon, Ga., died Saturday, May 19, 
2001, in Columbus, Ga., while on a trip with the Bowdon High School baseball team.
   Mr. Green was born July 8, 1934, in Randolph County, Ala., son of the late Robert N. 
and Inice Herren Green.  He was a member of Harmony Congregational Methodist 
Church, a Navy veteran of Korea and a member of the V.F.W.  He drove the athletics bus 
for Bowdon High School.
   Survivors include his wife, Joyce Cates Green of Bowdon; one son, Mike Green of 
Jackson, Ga.; four grandchildren; two brothers, Bobby Green and Walter Green of 
Carrollton, Ga.; and two sisters, Betty Garrett of Carrollton and Edith Yates of Ranburne.
   He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Green Gibbs, in 1979.
   Services will be at 4 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 23, at Bowdon Baptist Church, 
with the Rev. Gerald Rogers, the Rev. Darnell Teal, Mr. Lem Spear and Dr. Ron Huggins 
officiating.  Burial will be in Cleburne County Memory Garden, Ranburne.
   Music will be by Tim Kelley and the Bowdon Baptist Church Choir under the direction 
of the Rev. Kevin Brown.  Pallbearers will be Warren Powell, Stan Davis, Mike Striplin, 
Dwight Hochstetler, Mike Wright, Jeff Herren, Ralph Sanders and Steve Prater.  
Honorary pallbearers will be cheerleaders, athletic teams and Bowdon bus drivers.

Nellie Hambrick

   (FIVE POINTS) Nellie Hambrick, 72, of Five Points died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at 
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Hambrick was born in Chambers County on May 12, 1929.  She was a member of 
Macedonia Baptist Church, Five Points.
   Surviving are her husband, Earnest Hambrick of Five Points; four sons, Willie E. 
Hambrick, Melvin E. Hambrick of Five Points, Anthony R. Hambrick of LaFayette, and 
Mitchell Hambrick of Tracy, Calif.; five daughters, Ella Staples and Yolanda Hambrick of 
Roanoke, Latasha Holloway of Las Vegas, Nev., Shirley B. McPherson of Atlanta and 
Thersya D. Dowdell of LaFayette; two sisters, Thersya Adams Smith of Miami, Fla., and 
Eula Kate Adams of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Albert Adams and Anthony Adams of 
Five Points and William Russell Adams of Detroit, Mich.; 15 grandchildren, 11 
great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Services will be at Macedonia Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 23, at 1 p.m., with 
the Rev. Sanford Johnson officiating.  Burial will be in Rehope Cemetery.

Joseph Brown Chandler III

   (WHISPERING PINES, N.C.) Joseph Brown Chandler III, 38, of Whispering Pines 
died Friday, May 11, 2001, from injuries of an auto accident.  A memorial service was at 
11 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at Boles Funeral Home & Crematory in Southern Pines, N.C.
   Mr. Chandler is survived by his wife, Sarah Long Chandler; daughters, Danielle Dunn of 
Aberdeen, N.C., and Pamela Chandler and Katherine Chandler, both of the home; his 
mother, Sylvia Gilliland Chandler of Decatur, Ga., and his half-sister, J. Amanda Willett of 
Decula, Ga.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Chandler, his father, Joe 
Chandler Jr., his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chandler of Fayetteville and 
maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Gilliland of Roanoke.

Annie Merle Strong

   (ROANOKE) Annie Merle Strong, 77, of 9061 County Road 278, Roanoke, died 
Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services were Saturday May 19, at 1 p.m. CDT at Wehadkee Missionary Baptist 
Church, Abbotsford, Ga., with the Rev. Otis Wilson, pastor, officiating.  Burial was in 
Skyview Memorial Gardens, Welch.
   Survivors include her husband, Herman Strong of Roanoke; one brother, Robert 
Davidson of Detroit, Mich.; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and several devoted 
nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Strong was born Oct. 2, 1923, in Roanoke, daughter of the late John Davidson and 
Clemmie Smedley Davidson.  She was a member of Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church.

OBITUARIES:

Alfred Frazier Pennington

   (LAKE WELLS, Fla.) Services for Alfred Frazier Pennington, 86, of Lake Wells, Fla., 
formerly of Randolph County, were Friday, May 25, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Midway United 
Methodist Church, with the Revs. Cloyse Johnson, Lavelle Reynolds and Ed Grooms 
officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Pennington died Monday, May 21, at his residence.
   He was born in Holmes County, Fla., on Jan. 2, 1915, son of Henry and Mattie 
Barentine Pennington.  He was a mechanic at Anniston Ordinance Depot, was a World 
War II Army veteran who received two silver stars and a bronze star, and a member of 
Midway United Methodist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Marie Pennington of Lake Wells; two foster sons, Ralph 
Watkins of Texas and Terry Watkins of Valley; a sister, Mary Sims of Lake Wells; and 
several foster grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Rayford Edmondson, Delmer Green, Tim Watkins, W. C. Pate, Keith 
Langley, Rex May and Donald Wayne Johnson.

Maudie Abner

   (LANETT)  Maudie Abner, 75, of Lanett, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital.
   Mrs. Abner was born in Randolph County on Jan. 16, 1926.  She was co-worker of 
Abner's Body and Paint Shop in Lanett and attended Happy Valley Baptist Church.
   Surviving are her husband, Thomas B. Abner of Lanett; two sons, Waymon Abner of 
Opelika and Kenneth Abner of Valley; four grandchildren; a sister, Thelma Lee of 
Roanoke; and four great-grandchildren.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. on 
Friday, May 25, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery.  The Rev. Floyd Aikens and the Rev. S. 
T. Janney officiated.

Lonnie David Davenport

   (COLUMBUS, Ga.)  Lonnie David Davenport, 30, of Columbus, Ga., formerly of 
Wedowee, died Tuesday May 22, 2001, in the Medical Center, Columbus.
   Survivors include father, William Davenport of Wedowee; four sisters, Gertrude 
Johnson of Micaville, Hattie Mae Houston of Columbus and Jeanette Bell and Teresa 
Sims of Memphis, Tenn.; and four brothers, James Steveson and Johnny Ray Davenport of 
Columbus, and William Davenport and Jason Jerome Davenport of Wedowee.  He was 
preceded in death by his mother, Jannie Davenport, and a brother, Sylvester Davenport.
   Services were Saturday, May 26, at 2 p.m. at Weathers Heights Church of Christ, 
Wedowee, with Bro. Henry Nelson officiating.  Interment was in Antioch Baptist Church 
Cemetery, Wedowee.

Elbert Craven Jr.

   (LANETT) Services for Elbert Craven Jr., 33, of Lanett were Tuesday, May 29, 2001, 
at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Wedowee with the Rev. Gold Cofield officiating.  
Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Craven died Saturday, May 26, at his home.
   He was born in Carroll County, Ga., on Jan. 24, 1968, son of Elbert Craven Sr. and 
Thercy Lipham Craven.  He was employed in woodworking.
   Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Thercy and Lee Brown of Lanett; a special 
friend, Eddie Lumpkin of Heflin; his grandfather, Levelle Lipham of Lanett; a sister, 
Sharon Hughes of Calera; and a brother, James Craven of Ashland.
   Pallbearers were Wayne Lipham, Joseph Lipham, Ray Lipham, Jeremy Gardener, 
Mickey Miller and Delmar Gene Craven.

Ralph Gay 'Pops' Caldwell

   (WADLEY) Services for Ralph Gay "Pops" Caldwell, 62, of Wadley were Monday, 
May 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Mt Olive Baptist Church, with the Rev. Richie Farrow 
officiating.  Burial was at Pine Grove Cemetery.
   Mr. Caldwell died Saturday, May 26, at the home of Joyce and Johnny Davis in 
Montgomery.
   He was born in Randolph County on Jan. 11, 1939, son of Ernest Boyd Caldwell and 
Allie Maude McGill Caldwell.  He was an Air Force veteran, had been employed at 
Amoco Fabrics and Fibers, and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mona Knight of Wadley and Lori Hamby of Roanoke; 
two sons Ronald Caldwell and Donald Caldwell of Wadley; two sisters, Molly Caldwell of 
Wadley and Joyce Davis of Montgomery; two brothers, Wayne Caldwell and Boyce 
Caldwell of LaFayette; and seven grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Douglas Kirk, Danny Moncus, Crispin Reese, Neal Caldwell, Grover 
Alexander and Chad Hopkins.  Honorary pallbearers were Billy Rhodes and Laney Reese.

Sallie Mae Traylor

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Sallie Mae Traylor, 91, of Wedowee will be Wednesday, 
May 30, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Caver's Grove Congregational Christian Church with the Revs. 
Judy Smith and Don Paris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Traylor died Monday, May 28, at her home.
   She was born in Randolph County on May 10, 1910, daughter of Gus and Onie 
McManus Boyd.  She was a homemaker and a member of Caver's Grove Congregational 
Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wyatt Traylor, and a son, 
H. M. Traylor.
   Survivors include two daughters, Sue Benefield of Wedowee and Diana Perkins of 
Woodland; three sisters, Hattie Creed and Winnie Yates of LaGrange, Ga., and Ezelle 
Waldrep of Alexander City; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Traylor will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at noon on 
Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Anthony Perkins, Jeff Luker, David Benefield, Robert Houston, 
Doug Standridge and John Kalor.

Dixie Frances Fincher

   (CLANDLER, N.C.) Services for Dixie Frances Fincher, 89, of Candler, N.C., formerly

Baptist Church, with the Revs. Johnny Bishop, David Daniel and Clayton Scott officiating.  
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Fincher died Friday, May 25, at Pisgah Manor Health Care in Candler.
   She was born in Clay County on Sept. 24, 1911, daughter of Henry H. Machen and Exer 
Belle Gipson Machen.  She was a homemaker, member of New Hope Home 
Demonstration Club, and Rocky Branch Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by 
her husband, Bill Fincher and a son, Tom Fincher.
   Survivors include four daughters, Pansy Merriwether of Birmingham, Carol Arnold of 
Ardon, N.C., Jean Ricks of Pensacola, Fla., and Robbie Smith of San Jose, Calif.; 14 
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be James Merriwether, Ron Arnold, Jim Smith, Art Fincher, Hal 
Fincher, Stephen Ricks, Duffee Ricks and Craig Arnold.

Carl Samuel Odom

   (WOODLAND) Services for Carl Samuel Odom, 75, of Woodland will be Wednesday, 
May 30, 2001, at 4 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Clayton Scott 
officiating.  Burial will follow at Rocky Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Odom died Monday, May 28, at his reisdence.
   He was born in Tampa, Fla., on Nov. 26, 1925, son of Samuel D. Odom and Phenia 
Butler Odom.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II and had been employed as a sheet 
metal worker.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John E. Odom.
   Survivors include his wife, Barbara Rollins Odom of Woodland; a daughter, Janet 
Caldwell of Moore's Hill, Ind.; two sons, Keenan Moon of Woodland and Tony Moon of 
Douglasville, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Charissa Smith, of Woodland; a sister, Ruth Anderson 
of Richlands, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. John E. Odom of Fruitland Park, Fla.; eight 
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Keenan Moon, Tony Moon, George Smith, Luke Moon, Anthony 
Rollins and Shane Lasseter.

Wallace S. 'Doc' Sanders

   (ROANOKE) Services for Wallace S. "Doc" Sanders, 94, of Roanoke will be Friday, 
June 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Johnny Williams, 
Tommy Burks and Don Quick officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
   Mr. Sanders died Monday, May 28, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A lifelong Randolph county resident, Mr. Sanders was born April 19, 1907, son of John 
and Margie Bartlett Sanders.  He was a member of Rock Mills United Methodist Church 
and had been employed with Wehadkee Yarn Mills.  
   Survivors include his daughter, Jackie Sanders Dodd, and son-in-law, David Dodd of 
Ellenwood, Ga.; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
   The family will be receiving friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, for 1 to 7 
p.m. on Thursday.
