OBITUARIES:

Wallace Awbrey Bonner

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Wallace Awbrey Bonner, 71, of Franklin, Ga., formerly of Roanoke, 
died at his residence Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, after several weeks of declining health.
   Mr. Bonner was born in Randolph County, Ala., March 10, 1927, the son of the late 
Joseph Whitman Bonner and Mildred Lurlene Whitman Bonner.  He was retired from the 
Maintenance Department at Plant Wansley, was an army veteran and was a member of 
Bethany Lime Christian Church in Randolph County.
   Funeral services for Mr. Bonner were Monday, Nov. 30, from the chapel of Tom Stutts 
and Son Funeral Home in Franklin with the Revs. Harold Bonner and Frank Sledge 
officiating.  Music was rendered by Mrs. Earlene Shelnutt and Rev. Bonner.  Pallbearers 
were Whit Bonner, Jack Irving, Quinard Shelnut, David Lanier, Larry Wilson, Danny 
Murphey and Buster Hunter.  Interment was in the Bethany Lime Christian Church 
Cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lavern Freeman Bonner of Franklin; his children, Mrs. 
Dorothy Ann May and Lamar Bonner of Roanoke; stepchildren, Mrs. Phillis Martin and 
Mr. Farron Wisdom of Atlanta; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and three 
step-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Jackson and Miss Lera Pearl Bonner of 
Roanoke; two brothers, Leonard Bonner of Cullman and Gerson Bonner of Roanoke.
   Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home of Franklin was in charge of arrangements.

Deane Elizabeth Woodson Edwards

   (STATESVILLE, N.C.) Deane Elizabeth Woodson Edwards, 94, of Statesville, N.C., 
died Saturday morning, Nov. 28, 1998, in Maple Leaf Health Care, following a period of 
declining health.
   She was born in St. Louis, Mo., on July 11, 1904, to the late James Edward and Bessie 
Jane Wageley Woodson.  She graduated from South East Missouri State University with 
honors in 1926.  She taught math and science in Kennett High School, as well as Chaffee, 
Mo., prior to her marriage to Dalton Bryant Edwards.  She was a member of the 
American Association of University Women, the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Delta Delta 
Delta Sorority.
   Mrs. Edwards was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she had previously 
been one of the teachers of the Margaret Raynall Class.  Prior to moving to Statesville in 
1977, she and her husband lived in Roanoke, where they were members of the First United 
Methodist Church.  Mrs. Edwards taught the women's class there and when she moved, it 
was named the Deane Edwards Class in her honor.  She was married on June 2, 1928, to 
Dalton Bryant Edwards, who preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 1985.  A son, Woodson 
Bryant Edwards, died at age 4 on Nov. 17, 1935.  Mrs. Edwards was also preceded in 
death by her two sisters, Margaret Woll and Lucille Umbeck.
   She is survived by her son, Theodore Louis Edwards of Statesville; four grandchildren, 
Mary E. Hunnicutt of Atlanta, Judith E. Smith of Cornelius, N.C., James Woodson 
Edwards of Martinsville, Va., and Thomas Bryant Edwards of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; 
and five great-grandsons.
   Graveside services were at 1 p.m. Sunday at Oakwood Cemetery with the Revs. Steve 
Scott and Grant M. Sharp officiating.
   Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Statesville, N.C., or to First 
United Methodist Church, Roanoke.
   Nicholson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Herbert Edward Pike

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Herbert Edward Pike, 75, of Roanoke, were at 2 p.m. 
Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Young 
officiating.  Burial followed in Wehadkee Cemetery.
   Mr. Pike died Thursday, Nov. 26, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Dec. 11, 1922, son of Eddie 
Willington and Millie Rose Pearl Pike.  He was a World War II veteran, had been 
employed in the textile industry, and was a member of Forest Home Congregational 
Christian Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Irma Jean Pike of Roanoke; one daughter, Glenda Ziglar of 
Roanoke; two sisters, Lara Beth Yates of LaGrange, Ga., and Faye Wesson of Roanoke; 
two brothers, Archie Pike of Rock Mills and Roy Pike of Valley; one granddaughter and 
one great-grandson.
   Memorial donations may be floral or donations can be made to Forest Home 
Congregational Christian Church.
   Pallbearers were Anthony Pike, Mike Wesson, Eddie Pike, Terry Wilson, Jerry Prince 
and Kevin Adamson.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, was in charge of arrangements.

Lola Ida Key

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Lola Ida Key, 84, of Wedowee were Wednesday, 
Nov. 25, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church in Randolph 
County with the Revs. James Abernathy and Billy East officiating.  Burial followed in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Key died Tuesday, Nov. 24, at her residence.  She was a native and lifelong 
resident of Randolph County, a homemaker and a member of Union Hill Congregational 
Methodist Church.
   She is survived by five daughters, Geneva Sutton, Glenda Milstead and Annie White of 
Wedowee, Evelyn Snyder of Childersburg and Sandra Williams of Eastaboga; one son, 
Lawrence Key of Alexandria; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Shellie M. Key, one son, Harold Key, one 
granddaughter, Wanda Patterson and two great-grandchildren, Meagan Nicole Key and 
Nick Waldrop.
   Pallbearers were James Hill, Bill Burt, John White, Lee Wortham, Buford Ray Stitcher 
and Ed Creed.
   Honorary pallbearers were Robert Sutton, Wendel White, Chuck Milstead, Roger Key, 
Randall Key and Jim Key.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Lou Clay

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Mary L. Clay, 83, of Woodland were on Friday, 
Nov. 27, 1998, at 2 p.m. in Stone Mountain, Ga., with the Rev. Claude Bennett 
officiating.  Burial was at Melwood Cemetery, also in Stone Mountain.
   Mrs. Clay died Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mrs. Clay resided with Heidi (granddaughter) and Brian Janes of 253 Williams St., 
Woodland.  She is survived by two daughters Lucy Ledbetter of St. Petersburg, Fla., and 
Mildred Harbin of Stephens, Ga.; and three sons, David Clay of Woodland, Kenneth Clay 
of Wedowee, and Willis Clay of Oxford.

Susan Denise Heard Huddleston

   (VILLA RICA, Ga.) Susan Denise Heard Huddleston, 38, of Villa Rica, Ga., died 
Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness.
   She was born Sept. 14, 1960, in LaGrange, Ga., the daughter of Mrs. Myrtle Richardson 
Heard and the late Alton L. Heard.  She was raised in Roanoke before moving to Villa 
Rica five years ago.  She was employed as the manager of Dollar General Store in Villa 
Rica and was a member of the Holiness faith.
   Survivors include her husband, Daniel Stanford Huddleston Jr. of Villa Rica; one 
daughter, Kelly Daniel Huddleston of Villa Rica; one son, Nicholas Cody Huddleston of 
Villa Rica; her mother, Mrs. Myrtle Richardson Heard of Roanoke; one sister, Deborah 
Brown of Roanoke; three brothers, Dan Dailey of Ardmore, Tenn., and Mike Heard and 
Danny Heard of Roanoke; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Vera Richardson of Roanoke 
and a number of nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 30, at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Jones-Wynn 
Funeral Home with the Revs. Dan Huddleston Sr. and Earl Rollins officiating.  Musical 
selections were provided by Tim and Lisa Huddleston, Rev. Earl Rollins and Debra 
Rollins.
   Jones-Wynn Funeral Home of Villa Rica was in charge of arrangements.

Richard John McDonald

   (WOODLAND) Memorial services for Richard John McDonald, 57, of Woodland were 
at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Rock Mills Church of God with the Rev. Richard 
Baldwin officiating.
   Mr. McDonald died Wednesday, Nov. 25, at his residence following an extended illness.
   A former resident of Ovid, N.Y., he was born in Geneva, N.Y., April 22, 1941, son of 
Joseph H. McDonald Sr. and Helen Marie McDonald.  He had been employed with the 
State of New York.
   Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Pilgrim of Roanoke, Linda Vaughn of Cedar 
Bluff and Becky McDonald of Tennessee; three sons, John McDonald of Palm Harbor, 
Fla., and Michael and Andrew McDonald, both of Tennessee; one sister, Shirley A. Roach 
of Hilliard, Fla.; one brother, Joseph McDonald of Woodland; seven grandchildren and 
two great-grandchildren.
   Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Rd. 
NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.

Elizabeth Landers Willingham Bolt

   (HEATH, Texas) Graveside services for Elizabeth Landers Willingham Bolt, 87, of 
Heath, Texas, formerly of LaGrange, Ga., were Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at 1 p.m. at 
Union Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Roy Wysner officiating.
   Mrs. Bolt died Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Wills Point, Texas.
   A Wedowee native, Mrs. Bolt was born Feb. 26, 1911, daughter of Humphrey Davis 
and Ettie Reaves Landers.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Willingham.
   Survivors include one daughter, Ann Faison of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Ed-- Sipple of 
Columbia, S.C.; and one niece, Mary Springer of Columbia, S.C.
   In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Union Baptist Cemetery Fund or 
Building Fund.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rosella Slay Marable

   (ROANOKE) Rosella Slay Marable, 75, of Roanoke died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, 
at her residence.
   Mrs. Marable was a retired supervisor with the City of Detroit, Mich.  While residing in 
Detroit, Mrs. Marable was very active in Ebenezer AME Church.  Upon her retirement in 
1989, she returned to Roanoke and reunited with Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church.  
Mrs. Marable attended Alabama State College and worked as an education in the 
Chambers County School System.
   Survivors include her husband, Rufus Marable of Roanoke; a sister, Mary Hawthorne of 
Chicago, Ill.; and a brother, William "Bill" Slay of Roanoke.
   Services for Mrs. Marable will be Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at Christian Memorial 
Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tommie Finley and the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating.  
Interment will be in Mt. Bethel Cemetery. 
   Arrangements are by Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke.

Orland Howard 'Jim' Hester

   (GRAHAM) Funeral services for Orland Howard "Jim" Hester, 87, of Graham will be 
Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Tony 
Morris and Barry Cosper officiating.  Burial will follow at Shiloh Baptist Church 
cemetery.
   Mr. Hester died at his home on Monday, Nov. 30.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Hester was born Feb. 8, 1911, son of 
Madison Turner and Alice Louise Crouch Hester.  He was a member of Shiloh Baptist 
Church and the Heston Masonic Lodge at Graham.  He had worked as a mechanic.
   Survivors include his wife, Myrtis Noles Hester of Graham, and a host of nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers will be Michael Arrington, Brandon Arrington, Christopher Arrington, Marty 
Arrington, Clayton Carter and Stanley Gosdin.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Mable Bell, 100

   (ROANOKE) Mable Bell, 100, of Roanoke died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, 
at her residence.
   Mrs. Bell was a member of Deliverance Temple Church of Roanoke.
   Survivors include four daughters, Lillie Mae Almond of Carrollton, Ga., Betty 
Richardson of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Carrie Ethel Jones and Lera Jean Bell of 
Roanoke; two sons, Jim Bell of Rochester, N.Y., and Leroy Bell of Oxford; 
35 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of 
nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
   Services for Mrs. Bell were Saturday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. at Deliverance Temple Church 
with Bishop C. L. Wilkes officiating.  Burial was in Wehadkee Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke.

Mary Magaline Thompson

   (WADLEY) Graveside services for Mary Magaline Thompson, 77, of Wadley were 
Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Wadley, with the Rev. 
Cornelius Reese officiating.
   Ms. Thompson died Monday, Nov. 30, at her residence.
   Survivors include one son, John W. Thompson of Wadley; one granddaughter, Linda 
Gail Thompson of Jackson; one sister-in-law, Maude Floyd of Daviston; and one 
brother-in-law, Jerry Thompson of Columbia, Tenn.  She was preceded in death by her 
parents, Philip and Mag Floyd, and a brother, Phillip Floyd.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke.

Pallie Graham Yates

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Pallie Graham Yates, 88, of Roanoke were Monday, 
Dec. 7, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Scott Hannah 
officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Yates died Saturday, Dec. 5, at Traylor Nursing Home.
   A Randolph county native, Mrs. Yates was born May 14, 1910, daughter of John Robert 
and Dovie Odessa Lester Graham.  She was a member of Big Springs Baptist church and 
had retired from work as a park operator with the State of Alabama.  She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Ilo Claude Yates.
   Survivors include six sisters, Pearl Hall, Eva Morris, Pauline Wahn and Wylodene Bates, 
all of Woodland, Eltis Cummins of Roanoke, and Juliet Peterson of Montgomery; two 
brothers, James Graham of Roanoke and Charles B. Graham of Atlanta; and several nieces 
and nephews.
   The family suggests memorial donations may be made to Big Springs Baptist Church 
building fund.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James Callen Barganier

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for James Callen Barganier, 79, of Woodland were 
Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Greg Brittain 
officiating.  Burial was at the church cemetery.
   Mr. Barganier died Thursday, Dec. 3, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A Butler County native, Mr. Barganier was born April 21, 1919, son of Bishop Thomas 
and Lizzie A. Callens Barganier.  He was a self-employed general contractor and a 
member of Zion Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge in Greenville.
   Survivors include his wife, Norine Reid Barganier of Woodland; three daughters, 
Lucretia Lane of Guilford, Conn., Melonie Nelson of Carrollton, Ga., and Marla Lipham 
of Anderson, S.C.; one son, J. Michael Barganier of Atlanta; five grandchildren and 
three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Buddy Holloway, L. C. Henderson, James Russ, Crouch Rampey, 
Jess Shelton, Kenneth Gould, Greg Arrington and Don Strain.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Oletha Chaffin Williamson

   (WEDOWEE) Oletha Chaffin Williamson, 86, of Wedowee died Saturday Dec. 5, 1998, 
at Randolph County Hospital following an extended illness.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at First United Methodist Church of 
Wedowee, with the Rev. Harris Hand officiating.  Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Williamson was born Oct. 29, 1912, daughter of Pete Chaffin and Lena Wilson 
Chaffin.  She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of 
Wedowee.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William Curtis Williamson, and a 
son, Ed Williamson.
   Survivors include a daughter, Curtis Jane Burns of Wedowee; three sons, Wallace 
Ledford Williamson of Roanoke, Daniel Williamson of Pelham and Hal Williamson of 
West Point, GA; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Estalene Ballard of 
Valley; and a brother, Opal Chaffin of Anniston.
   Pallbearers were Bill Williamson, Zenus Williamson, Joby Burns, Jack Chaffin, Jimmy 
Chaffin and Buford Stitcher.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Iona L. Carroll

   (VALLEY) Iona L. Carroll, 70, of Valley died Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998, at her residence.
   A native of Randolph County, Mrs. Carroll was born April 30, 1928, daughter of the 
late Nathan Langley and Evie Davis Langley.  She was a retired West Point Pepperell 
employee with more than 42 years of service and a member of Fairfax First Baptist 
Church.
   She is survived by her husband, James D. Carroll of Valley; two daughters, Linda Norris 
of Opelika and Brenda Parrish of Valley; five granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; 
and a sister, Ethel Fetner of Valley.  She was preceded in death by a brother, 
J. L. Langley.
   Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, with burial in Johnson Memorial Gardens in Valley.  The 
Rev. Mike Blair officiated.
   Memorial donations may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice or to Fairfax First Baptist 
Church.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Mrs. Stell Truitt

   (ROANOKE) Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Stell Truitt, 91, of Roanoke will be 
held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at Wehadkee Cemetery, with the Rev. James 
Harper officiating.
   Mrs. Truitt died Saturday, Dec. 5, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke, following an 
extended illness.
   She was a lifelong resident of Randolph County, born July 9, 1907.  She had been 
employed as [at] Wehadkee Yarn Mills and was a member of Rock Mills United 
Methodist Church.
   Survivors include one daughter, Virginia Johnson of El Cajon, Calif.; one 
granddaughter, Connie Johnson of El Cajon, and one grandson, Donald Johnson of 
Sunnyvale, Calif.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home after 10:30 a.m. 
Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Skip Kelley, Bynum Bailey, Frank Foster, Bill King and Harold Hall.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Ann McCormick

   (ROOPVILLE, Ga.) Ann "Teal" McCormick, 59, of Roopville, Ga., died Thursday, 
Dec. 3, 1998, at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta as the result of an auto accident.
   Mrs. McCormick was born April 30, 1939, in Heard County, Ga., daughter of the late 
Isaac Teal and Ira Laster Teal.  She had lived in Heard County all of her life.  She worked 
for Sewell Manufacturing Company many years.  She had many friends in Heard County 
and surrounding areas.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. at Ridgeway Methodist Church, with 
the Rev. Lynn Janney officiating.  Music was by Martha Purgason and Angie Britt.  
Pallbearers were Paul McCormick, Tracy McCormick, Henry Hammock, Bobby Hopson, 
David McCormick and Danny McCormick.  Interment was in Antioch Baptist Church 
Cemetery in Heard County.
   Mrs. McCormick was preceded in death by her father and one son, Chad McCormick.
   Survivors include her husband, Floyd McCormick of Roopville; her mother, Mrs. Ira 
Teal of Carrollton, Ga.; a daughter, Tesia McCormick of Franklin, Ga.; a son, Mack Nutt 
of Franklin; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Joe Wright of 
Bowdon, Ga., and Reba Butler of Franklin; one brother, Hollis Teal of Franklin; and many 
friends.
   Arrangements were by Tom Stutts & Son Funeral Home, Franklin.

Dorothy R. 'Dot' Benefield

   (VALLEY) Dorothy R. "Dot" Benefield, 80, of Valley, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, 
at Lanier Memorial Nursing Home, Valley.
   Mrs. Benefield was born in Randolph County on Feb. 20, 1918, daughter of the late 
Beatrice Bramlett Bishop and Holley Bishop.  She was a retired West Point Pepperell 
employee, having worked at the Fairfax Mill.  She was a member of Valley First Baptist 
Church.
   Surviving are two daughters, Beatie Henderson of Lanett and Charlotte Bohannon of 
LaGrange, Ga.; a sister, Kathleen Kitchens of Roanoke; and four grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.  The Rev. Russel Dean 
officiated.
   Memorial donations may be made to Valley First Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Sylvia West

   (VALLEY) Graveside services for Sylvia West, 74, of Valley will be Wednesday, 
Dec. 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. CST at Highway Methodist Church Cemetery in Randolph 
County with the Rev. Michael Jay Ezell officiating.
   Mrs. West died Sunday, Dec. 6, at University Hospital, Birmingham.
   Born Aug. 10, 1924, in Randolph County, Mrs. West was the daughter of the late 
Mattie Sue Robertson Baldwin and Hiram Dewey Baldwin.  She had retired from West 
Point Pepperell's Lanier-Carter Mill.  She was a member of Highway Methodist Church in 
Randolph County.
   Survivors include two sons, Robert West of Valley and Miles Berry West of Lanett; 
three sisters, Linda Baldwin of Woodland, Faye Young of Roanoke and Helen Stewart of 
Wadley; two brothers, Mack Baldwin and Victor Baldwin of Woodland; three 
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements are provided by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

A. Katherine Cofield

   (ROANOKE) A. Katherine Cofield, 67, of Roanoke died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998, 
at George H. Lanier Hospital in Valley.

   Survivors include one daughter, Angela Brown of Roanoke; two sons, Minister Jerome 
Cofield of Roanoke and Patrick Cofield of LaGrange, Ga.; two brothers, Ozell Hines of 
Abelene, Texas, and Charlie F. Hines of Long Beach, Calif.; one sister, Cora Paige of 
Atlanta; four grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
   Services for Mrs. Cofield will be Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. at Canaan Baptist 
Church, Welch, with the Rev. Rodney K. Turner officiating.  Interment will be in the 
church cemetery.

   (OXFORD) Funeral services for Thomas Clifford Williams, 91, of Oxford will be at

   Mr. Williams passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Colonial Pines Nursing Home in Oxford.

and two brothers, Theron Williams of Anniston and Griffin Williams of Oxford.

Margaret Schuessler Owens, 100

   (ROANOKE) Graveside funeral services for Margaret Schuessler Owens, 100, of 
Roanoke will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at Cedarwood Cemetery with the 
Rev. Barry Cosper officiating.
   Mrs. Owens died Monday, Dec. 14, at Randolph County Hospital.
   Mrs. Owens was born in Randolph County June 26, 1898, daughter of Major and Leila 
Dobbins Schuessler.  Her father was the founder of Commercial Bank of Roanoke and a 
general merchandise firm, Schuessler and Company.  She attended Ward Belmont College 
in Nashville, was an accomplished pianist and taught piano for many years.  Mrs. Owens 
had lived in South Carolina and Elijay, Ga., before returning to Roanoke in 1970.  She 
was a member of the Spartanburg, S.C., Philharmonic and did Sunday afternoon radio 
concerts.  Mrs. Owens was a member of Roanoke Literary Club and attended the 
Christian Scientist church in LaGrange, Ga.  Since 1994, she had been a resident of 
Traylor Nursing Home.  Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her husband, James 
Connor Owens Sr., and a son, James Conner [Connor] Owens Jr.
   Survivors include one daughter, Leila Owens Green of Anderson, S.C.; a daughter- 
in-law, Anne Baskin Owens of Bay Minnette; seven grandchildren and 13 great- 
grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home Thursday, Dec. 17, from 
9 to 11 a.m.  The family suggests memorial contributions be made to your favorite charity

Florence Bonner Huey

   (ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for Florence Bonner Huey, 81, of Rock Mills were at 
noon Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Kirby 
officiating.  Burial followed at Paran Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Huey died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Feb. 8, 1917, daughter of Will 
and Elvie Fincher Farr.  She had been employed at Wehadkee Yarn Mills and was a 
member of Paran Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory 
Edward Huey.
   Survivors include three daughters, Elvielene Shirey, Joan Ussery and Rachel Farr, all of 
Roanoke; one son, Frazer Huey of Roanoke; one sister, Adel Crouch of Rock Mills; 
11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Mary Fallin, Mike Taylor, Chris Taylor, Brad Purdy, Mike Forrman 
and Danny Smith.

   (FIVE POINTS) Funeral services for Billy Gene Redden, 56, of Five Points, formerly of 
Lanett and LaGrange, Ga., were Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum 
Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tim Whaley officiating.  Burial followed at Randolph 
Memory Garden.
   Mr. Redden died Tuesday, Dec. 8, at his home after an extended illness.
   A Lee County native, Mr. Redden was born Jan. 26, 1942, son of William and Curtis 
Jeter Redden.  He was a member of Oakside Baptist Church and had been employed with 
Lanett Mills.
   Survivors include his companion, Mildred Pike of Roanoke; one son, Denson Redden of 
LaGrange; and four grandchildren.

Daniel of Wedowee, Sabrina Houston of Woodland and Veronica O'Neal of Roanoke;

Johnny Daniel of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two sisters-in-law, a mother-in-law, a host

   Mr. Todd died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 10 1998, at his residence.
   A former resident of Riverdale, Ga., Mr. Todd was born in Randolph County Oct. 9, 
1934, son of Harm and Bessie Phillips Todd.  He had been employed with General 
Motors, was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of Maplewood Baptist 
Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Irene Smith Todd of Roanoke; one daughter, Angie King of 
Roanoke; three sons, Steve Todd of Senoia, Ga., and Allan Todd and Mike Todd, both of 
Roanoke; three sisters, Martha Caswell of LaGrange, Ga., Jo Brown of Roanoke and Sally 
Berry of Griffin, Ga.; three brothers, Sylvin Todd of Florida, Bobby Todd of Gulfport, 
Miss., and Clarence Todd of Griffin; and one granddaughter.

Wesson.  He was an air force veteran of the Korean War and had retired from the National 
Guard.  He was preceded in death by one daughter, Gina Howerton, in 1993.
   Survivors include his wife, Faye Pike Wesson of Roanoke; one son, Michael Wesson of 
Roanoke; two sister[s], Ada Paravicini of Elmore and Vera McNelly of Tallassee; and

Reginald Hollis Barber

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Funeral services for Reginald Hollis Barber, 62, of Franklin, Ga., 
were Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Union Grove Baptist Church in Franklin.  The 
Revs. Roger Yearwood and Lynn Janney officiated.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Barber, son of Mrs. Mary Will Barber and the late Mr. Leonce Bradley Barber, 
lived in Heard County for most of his life.  He was a self-employed painting contractor 
with Barber Painting.  He was chairman of the board of deacons at Union Grove Baptist 
Church and had served in various other church positions.
   He is survived by his wife, Patricia Barber of Franklin; a daughter, Tami Steele of 
Franklin; two sons, Mark Barber and Shane Barber of Franklin; three grandchildren; his 
mother; a sister, Louise (Dinkey) Proctor of Orange City, Fla.; a brother, Arnold Barber 
of Temple, Ga.; three nieces and two nephews.

Woodrow Patrick Ayres

   (ATTALLA) Graveside services [were] at 2 p.m. Sunday at Crestwood Cemetery for 
Woodrow Patrick Ayres, 82, of Attalla, who died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998.  The Rev. 
Gary Faith officiated.
   Mr. Ayres was a native of Randolph County and resided in Gadsden.  He was a veteran 
of World War II and attended Walnut Park Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by 
four brothers and one sister.
   He is survived by a son, Pat Ayres of Rainbow City; two grandchildren; sisters, Vera 
Lee of Roanoke, Louise Daniel of Newell, and Era L. Greene of Anniston; and many 
nieces, nephews and other relatives.

of White's Chapel Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, George 
Gilliam Johnson, and a son George Glavis Johnson.
   Survivors include one sister, Florence Taylor of Roanoke; two half-sisters, Cloie Wilson 
and Eucal Haynes of Woodland; one brother, J. W. Haynes Sr. of LaGrange, GA, and 
three half-brothers, Howard Haynes, Rudolph Haynes and Aaron Haynes, all of the 
Valley.

Keshia Smith and Crystal Smith of Wadley, LaQuinda Sims of Wedowee, Candy Smith of 
Montgomery and Octavia W. Russell of New Site; a sister Josie Marbury of Wadley; two 
brothers, Joe Ford of Albuquerque, N.M., and Roger DeJarnette of Atlanta; two nephews 
and three nieces.  He was preceded in death by his adoptive mother, Vorna Mae Smith.

Daviston, with the Rev. Myron Buchanan and the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating.  Burial 
was in the church cemetery.

Charlie W. Kendrick

   (MILLTOWN) Charlie W. Kendrick, 86, of Milltown died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, 
at his residence.
   Mr. Kendrick was a native of Chambers County, born March 6, 1912.  He was a 
self-employed carpenter and farmer and the oldest charter member and deacon of 
Community Baptist Church, LaFayette.
   Funeral services were at Community Baptist Church on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 2 p.m., 
with interment in the church cemetery.  The Rev. Clifford DeLee and the Rev. Mike 
Stoker officiated.
   He is survived by his wife, Jewell Kendrick of Milltown; a daughter, Margie Adams of 
Milltown; two sons, John Frank Kendrick of Hackneyville and Danny Kendrick of Five 
Points; two sisters, Willie Lee Sorrell of Rome, Ga., and Mamie Sue Coggins of Atlanta; 
one brother, J. D. Kendrick of LaFayette; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

John Robert LeSueur

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for John Robert LeSueur, 78, of Wedowee were at 
2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at First Baptist Church in Wedowee, with the Rev. Don 
Paris officiating.  Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mr. LeSueur died Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke following 
a short illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born March 22, 1920, son of John M. 
and Byrd Pate LeSueur.  He had been a teacher at Randolph-Roanoke Area Vocation 
School, a farmer, a veteran of World War II, a member of the Kiwanis Club, and a 
member of First United Methodist Church in Roanoke.
   He is survived by his wife, Frances Wright LeSueur of Wedowee, and a host of nieces 
and nephews.

Lizzie Mae Pike

   (VALLEY) Lizzie Mae Pike, 82, of Valley, formerly of Brunswick, Ga., died 
Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at Lanier Memorial Hospital.
   Mrs. Pike was born July 16, 1916, in Fairplay, S.C.  She was the former owner and 
operator of Pike's Florist in Brunswick, Ga., and was a member of First Baptist Church of 
Brunswick.
   She is survived by two sisters, Sallie Whatley of Roanoke and Rilla Alewine of 
Fitzgerald, Ga., and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Dewey Clindon Pike, and her parents, Evie Jane Strawdridge Eaton and George 
Thomas Eaton.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 26, at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley, with burial in Johnson Memorial Gardens.  The Rev. 
Raymond Hammock officiated.

   Mrs. Lowe will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at noon on Wednesday.

Cemetery in Montgomery with the Rev. Henry Bishop officiating.
   Mrs. Austin died Friday, Dec. 25, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
   A Montgomery resident since 1950, Mrs. Austin was a Randolph County native, born 
Nov. 2, 1924, daughter of Loomis Vernon and Ila Pearl Faulkner Mitchum.  She had 
worked as a secretary with the Montgomery Police Department and was a member of the 
Fraternal Order of Police and Covenant Presbyterian Church.
   Survivors include two sisters, Chrystine Carroll of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Linda 
Ann Mitchum Kirby of Huntsville; a niece, a nephew; and two great nieces.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.
