OBITUARIES:

Luke Hill Sr.

   (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Luke Hill Sr., 93, of Roanoke was Saturday, 
June 27, 1998, at First Baptist Church, Roanoke.  The Rev. Lathonia J. Wright officiated.  
Burial was in East Roanoke Cemetery.
   Mr. Hill died Tuesday, June 23, at Estes Nursing facility, Birmingham.
   He is survived by his wife, Annie Elizabeth Hill of Roanoke; two sons, the Rev. Alford 
Hill and Silus Leon Hill of Roanoke; two daughters, Ruby H. McGhee of Birmingham and 
Harriet Shears of Roanoke; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Jenny Hill; three sons, Sam Hill, 
Willie Hill and Luke Hill Jr.; and a daughter Judy Adamson.
   Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke, was in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Clardy Overton

   (FOLEY) Hazel Clardy Overton, 79, a native of Wadley and a resident of Foley died 
Monday, June 29, 1998, at her residence.
   Mrs. Overton attended Wadley High School and graduated from Montevallo in 1939 
with a B.S. degree in education.  Voted as one of Alabama's Gracious Ladies, she also 
served as past president of the Kennedy Book Club.  She taught home economics in 
Reeltown and served as a substitute rural mail carrier.
   She was the daughter of the late Dr. A. J. Clardy and Bertha Estelle Hearn.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Overton Sr.
   Survivors include two sons, Joseph Ralph "Shug" Overton, Gulf Shores, and Hugh W. 
Overton, Foley; two daughters, Rosemary Rowell of Pell City and Sharon McKoon, 
Smiths; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Visitation will be Wednesday, July 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Baldwin Funeral Home in Gulf 
Shores.  Graveside services will be Thursday, July 2, at City Cemetery in Wedowee.
   Memorials may be made to Whitehaven Baptist Church, 4800 Elvis Presley Blvd., 
Memphis, TN 38116.

Jennie S. Parks

   (MONTGOMERY) Jennie S. Parks, 92, of Montgomery died Tuesday, June 23, 1998.  
She was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy and Daughters of the 
American Revolution.
   Funeral services were at Leak-Memory Chapel in Montgomery on Friday, June 26, at 
10 a.m., with Dr. John Oliver officiating.  Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
   She is survived by her husband, Woodford H. Parks of Montgomery; one daughter, Jane 
P. McDaniel of Montgomery; one sister-in-law, Julia Parks Humber of Montgomery; three 
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Holley Stanley, Bob Neal, Charlie Bennett, Bill Fowler, Jim Melton 
and Alton Long.  Donations can be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church.
   Arrangements were by Leak Memory Chapel, Montgomery.

Billy Joe Clifton

   (PENDLETON, N.C.) Billy Joe Clifton, 69, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at his Pine 
Ridge residence in Pendleton, N.C.  He was a native of Wedowee and son of the late 
Robert Lawton "Bob" and Ellone Yates Clifton.
   Mr. Clifton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, 
retiring after 22 years of service.  He served aboard the command ships USS Wright, USS 
Guam, USS Lewis and USS Lake Champlain, which picked up the first astronaut, John 
Glenn.
   Mr. Clifton is survived by one son, Casey L. Wilson of Severn, N.C.; two daughters, 
Sarah M. Sturgill of Severn and Cynthia E. Wilstead of Newport News, Va.; one sister, 
Bobbie Washington of Opelika; and four grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Joe Jr.
   Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Ellis family cemetery on 
Manning Road in Suffolk, Va.

Elvin Mark Slagle

   (MT. OLIVE) Funeral services for Elvin Mark Slagle, 73, of the Mt. Olive community 
near Roanoke were Monday, June 29, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, 
with the Rev. Maynard McGinty officiating.  Burial was at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Slagle died Friday, June 26, at his home.
   A lifelong Chambers County resident, Mr. Slagle was born Nov. 20, 1924, son of Joseph 
Winston and Carrie Clack Slagle.  He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Dollie Mae Slagle; one daughter, Wanda Slagle Cofield of 
Roanoke; one son, Ricky M. Slagle of Roanoke; one sister, Marie Douglas of Roanoke; 
five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Dewayne Toland, James Royster, Jason Slagle, Shane Scott, 
Bobbie Chilcott and Ronnie Howard.  Honorary pallbearers were James Taylor and 
Howard Perry.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Eva Allen Brady

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for Eva Allen Brady, 92, of Newell will be at 3 p.m., 
Wednesday, July 1, 1998 at Morrison's Chapel United Methodist Church with the 
Rev. Leron Murphy officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Brady died June 29 at Wedowee Hospital.
   She was born Dec. 7, 1905, in Cleburne County, daughter of Joe and Cindy Lipham 
Allen.  She was a homemaker, a member of Jordan's Chapel Church and a member of the 
Randolph County Home Demonstration Club.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
George W. Brady, and a son, Lawrence Brady.
   Survivors include three daughters, Edna Griffin of Anniston, Lottie Strain of Woodland 
and Colleen Bentley of Eastaboga; two sisters, Flora Gill and Novella Dye, both of 
Albany, Ga.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Brady will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 2 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Laymon Staples

   (ROANOKE) Laymon Staples, 90, of Roanoke died Monday, June 29, 1998, 
in Flint, Mich.
   Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Nettie Staples of Grand Blanc, Mich.; a 
step-daughter, Vivian Barnes of Dania, Fla.; four grandchildren; and sisters-in-law 
Evelyn Fears of Baltimore, Md., and Geneva Staples and Louise Staples of Roanoke.
   Services will be announced by Clark Memorial Funeral Service.

James D. Roberts

   (ROANOKE) Graveside funeral services for James D. Roberts, 72, of Roanoke were at 
4:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, with the 
Rev. Tim Craft officiating.
   Mr. Roberts died Tuesday, June 23, at the University of Alabama Hospital in 
Birmingham.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Aug. 14, 1925, son of Alfred and 
Lara Hester Roberts.  He had been self-employed as a carpenter and was a member of 
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
   He is survived by one son, James Dempsey Roberts of Roanoke.

OBITUARIES:

Ben L. Owens

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) The funeral service for Ben L. Owens, 88, of LaGrange, Ga., was 
Friday, July 3, 1998, at 10 a.m. EDT at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, with the 
Rev. Olin White officiating.  Burial was at 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, 
Auburn.
   Mr. Owens died Wednesday, July 1, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Born Oct. 18, 1909, in Chambers County to Sydney and Emma Robinson Owens.  
Mr. Owens was a retired college teacher and a former writer for the Valley Times-News 
in Lanett.  He had lived in LaGrange for the past five years and was a former resident of 
Washington, D.C.  Mr. Owens was a Methodist.
   He is survived by four nieces and two nephews.
   Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home, LaGrange, was in charge of arrangements.

Milton Euel 'M.E.' Cowart

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Milton Euel "M.E." Cowart, 84, of Carrollton, Ga., died early 
Wednesday morning, July 1, 1998, at Tanner Medical Center.
   He was born in Carroll County Oct. 13, 1913, son of the late J. T. "Joe" Cowart and 
Amanda Smith Cowart.  Mr. Cowart retired from Barnes Freight Lines with 40 years of 
service.  He was a director of Carroll EMC for 29 years, a former member of the 
Carrollton Lions Club and a member of Lowell United Methodist Church, where he had 
served as treasurer and chairman of the administrative board.
   Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Imogene Folds Cowart, 
who died Jan. 19, 1993; five sisters, Gladys Baughtman, Susie Rooks Jones, Lillian 
Taylor, Beatrice Durrough and Ida Musick; four brothers, Luther Cowart, Guy Cowart, 
Jewel Cowart and Eugene Cowart; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
   He is survived by five daughters, Monteen Miller of Carrollton, Jeraldine Walton and 
Maxine House of Douglasville, Ga., Wylene Bartlett of Wedowee and Charlene Moody of 
Covington, Ga.; two sisters, Opal McWhorter of Glenlock and Vera Pyron of Carrollton; 
10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
   Funeral services were Thursday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at Martin & Hightower Heritage 
Chapel, Carrollton, with the Rev. Larry Patton and Mr. Gary Bullock officiating.  Music 
was by Harold McWhorter.  Grandsons and great-grandsons served as pallbearers.  
Directors and personnel of Carroll EMC served as honorary pallbearers.  Interment was 
in Lowell Cemetery.

Floyd Guy Slagle

   (ROANOKE) Floyd Guy Slagle, 89, of Roanoke died Sunday, July 5, 1998, 
at Traylor Nursing Home following an extended illness.
   The funeral service will be Wednesday, July 8, at 11 a.m. from Antioch Congregational 
Christian Church with the Revs. Floyd Carmack and Maynard McGinty officiating.  Burial 
will follow in the church cemetery.
   A resident of Randolph County, he was born May 15, 1909, in Chambers County, son 
of the late William Robert and Addie Frank Slaughter Slagle.  He was the former owner 
of Slagle Grocery in Rock Mills.  Mr. Slagle was a member and deacon of Antioch 
Congregational Christian Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Ruth Birdsong Slagle of Roanoke; a son, Thomas Slagle of 
LaGrange, Ga.; a daughter, Eloise Slagle Kerr of Garner, N.C.; five grandchildren and 
eight great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Jim Lane, Jim Merchant, John Morgan Kerr III, Raymond Thomas 
Slagle, Lawrence Reid Slagle and Gerson Bonner.
   The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to Antioch Congregational 
Christian Church, c/o Mrs. Helen Moon, 1382 County Rd. 242, Roanoke, AL 36274.

Burlon Puckett

   (WEDOWEE) Burlon Puckett, 61, of Wedowee died Saturday, July 4, 1998, at his 
home after an extended illness.
   The funeral service was Monday, July 6, at 4 p.m. at Mt. Grove Baptist Church with 
the Revs. Donald Spradlin, Charles Fetner, Dan Keith and Dale Jones officiating.  Burial 
followed in the church cemetery.
   A Randolph County native, he was born May 7, 1937, son of John D. and Annie 
Freeman Puckett.  He had been self-employed as a painter and was a member of 
Mt. Grove Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by a son, Chris Puckett.
   Survivors include his wife, Hazel Bozeman Puckett of Wedowee; one daughter, 
Shelia Milam of Wedowee; his mother, Annie Puckett of Rock Mills; three sisters, Doris 
Culbertson, Eloise Fetner and Janice Jones, all of Roanoke; one brother, Clinton Puckett 
of Valley; and four grandchildren.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Clay County Hospice.
   Pallbearers were L. W. Culbertson, Teamon Holloway, Jeremy Holloway, 
Kenneth Mitchell, Roger Gray and Bill Puckett.

Jessie Herman Brown

   (ROANOKE) Jessie Herman Brown, 86, of Roanoke died Sunday, July 5, 1998, 
at Randolph County Hospital after an extended illness.
   The funeral service was Monday, July 6, 1998, at 2 p.m. from Providence Baptist 
Church with the Revs. David Daniel and Earl Rollins officiating.  Burial followed at the 
church cemetery.
   Survivors include one daughter and six sons, Mrs. Curtis Baldwin, Lowell Brown, Mark 
Brown and Larry Brown, all of Roanoke, and Clarence Brown of Wedowee, Billy Brown 
of Leesburg and Michael Brown of Franklin, Ga.; two sisters, Gertrude Mitchell of 
Woodland and Adelle Crisswell of LaGrange, Ga.; one brother, Harlin Brown of 
Woodland; 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Danny Baldwin, Clay Tucker, Jeffrey Anderson, Joey Brown, 
Kenny Arrington, Tim Collins, Jim Funk and Phillip Baldwin.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Brown was born July 23, 1911, son of Hiram A. S. and 
Venie Bowen Brown.  He was a farmer and a member of Liberty East Baptist Church.  He 
was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Daniel Brown; one daughter, Mary Anderson; 
and a grandson, Billy Wayne Brown.

Harvey Huit Bennett

   (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Harvey Huit Bennett, 73, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. 
Tex Ergle officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Bennett died Monday, July 6, at Opelika Health Care after an extended illness.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Bennett was born Nov. 30, 1924, son of Jimmy and Ella 
Hall Bennett.  He was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of Roanoke First United 
Methodist Church and a retired Superior Gas Company truck driver.
   Survivors include his wife, Okerlene Vowell Bennett of Roanoke; two sons, Jimmy 
Bennett of Warner Robins, Ga., and Jerry Bennett of Roanoke; two sisters, Sara Shewark 
of New York and Verval Heard of Roanoke; three grandchildren and three great- 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Ricky Crenshaw, Terry Holloway, Mike Fisher, Larry Bassett, 
Gene Longshore and Fred Davis.

Alice Meldarine Barton Bush

   (LAFAYETTE) Alice Meldarine Barton Bush, 71, of LaFayette died Tuesday, 
June 30, 1998, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   The funeral service was Thursday, July 2, at Sanders Funeral Home, LaFayette, 
the Rev. Michael Griggs officiating.
   Mrs. Bush was a native of Randolph County, born May 4, 1927, to Mr. and Mrs. Glover 
Barton of Woodland.  She had been a resident of LaFayette for the past 10 years and was 
a member of Highway Congregational Methodist Church in Roanoke.
   Mrs. Bush is survived by four children, Donna Malieh of Columbia, S.C., Paula Bush of 
Pennsylvania, Margy Ostrusky of Severna Park, Md., and Bart Bush of Charleston, S.C.; 
one sister, Ola Brown of LaFayette; and five grandchildren.
   Sanders Funeral Home, LaFayette, was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Evelyn Waller Swann

   (BIRMINGHAM) Funeral services for Ruby Evelyn Waller Swann, 87, of Birmingham, 
formerly of Roanoke, will be Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at 12:30 p.m. at Roebuck Chapel 
in Birmingham.  Burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
   Mrs. Swann died Sunday, July 12, in Birmingham.
   A native of Randolph County,  Mrs. Swann was born July 17, 1910, daughter of Jesse 
Clifford and Nancy Etta Bugg Waller.  She was a homemaker and a member of Huffman 
United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Swann was preceded in death by her parents; her 
husband, H. Adolph Swann of Birmingham; and a brother, Ernest Waller of Roanoke.
   Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Gill of Roswell, Ga., and Nancy Brechin of 
Centerville, Ga.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Waymon 
Waller and Herbert Waller of Roanoke; and one sister, Louise Milam of LaGrange, Ga.
   Memorials may be made to Huffman United Methodist Church.
   Roebuck Chapel of Birmingham is in charge of arrangements.

Chad Everett Looney

   (OPELIKA) The funeral service for Chad Everett Looney, 23, of Opelika was Sunday, 
July 12, 1998, at 4 p.m. EDT at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley.  
Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett with the Rev. Fred Woodall officiating.
   Mr. Looney died Thursday, July 9, at University Hospital in Birmingham.
   Born Nov. 7, 1974, in Langdale, Mr. Looney was a member of Liberty Baptist Church 
in Opelika.  He was a graduate of Valley High School and was employed with Ray 
Electric in Opelika.
   He is survived by his wife, Diana Lynn Looney; a son, Trevor Houston Looney of 
Opelika; his parents, Mrs. Hilda Looney of Lanett and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stodghill of 
LaGrange, Ga.; five brothers, David Looney Jr. of Roanoke, Casey Looney of Lanett, and 
Joseph Beesley, Stewart Beesley and Shannon Beesley of LaGrange; a sister, Alison 
Stodghill of LaGrange; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Stodghill of 
Valley.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service of Valley.

Leroy Dunson

   (SUN CITY, Fla.) The funeral service for Leroy Dunson, 88, of Sun City, Fla., formerly 
of Roanoke, was Sunday, July 12, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the 
Revs. Bernard Fuller and Harold Bonner officiating.  Eulogy was delivered by Lucy Ozley 
and Terry Anderson, daughter and grandson of Mr. Dunson.  Burial followed at 
Cedarwood Cemetery
   Mr. Dunson died Friday, July 10, at Sun Terrace Health Care Center in Sun City.
   A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, he was born Oct. 13, 1909, son of 
Henry Walker and Sara Frances Hester Dunson.  He was a member of Maple Drive 
Congregational Christian Church and was employed by the City of Roanoke.
   Survivors include his wife, Avis Bassett Dunson of Sun City Center; two daughters, 
Sara Ann Anderson of Ruskin, Fla., and Lucy Faye Ozley of Phoenix, Ariz.; four sons, 
Jim Dunson of Opelika, Sammy Dunson and Johnny Dunson of St. Petersburg, Fla., and 
Charles Dunson of Cleveland, Tenn.; one sister, Sayre B. Tanner of Roanoke; 
16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons, Bryan Anderson, Terry Anderson, Charles Dunson Jr., 
Phillip Dunson, Jeff Mills and Jim Dunson Jr.  Honorary pallbearers were Chris Ozley, 
Jeff Anderson, Greg Dunson, Norman Leroy Dunson and Andy Mann.

Elizabeth H. Burdette

   (DAHLONEGA, Ga.) The funeral service for Elizabeth H. Burdette, 79, of Dahlonega, 
Ga., formerly of Valley, was Saturday, July 11, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service 
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley, the Revs. Russell Dean and Robert Crawford officiating.  
Burial was at Langdale Cemetery.
   Mrs. Burdette died Thursday, July 9, in Dahlonega.
   A native of Roanoke, she was born May 21, 1919, daughter of the late Erbie and Nanny 
Lou Fergerson Hubbard.  She was a former employee of George H. Lanier Memorial 
Hospital and had worked with the West Point School System.  She had also worked at the 
old West Point Hospital.  Mrs. Burdette was a member of Langdale Congregational 
Christian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, Valley Chapter.
   She is survived by her son, Larry Burdette of Dahlonega; two sisters, Jeanette Haynes of 
Waxshaw, N.C., and Pearl Brown of Valley; and two brothers, Robert Hubbard and 
Milford W. "Bud" Hubbard of Valley; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
   Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star, 
Valley Chapter, in her memory.
   Johnson Brown-Service of Valley was in charge of arrangements.

Edna B. Thrower

   (LAFAYETTE) Edna B. Thrower, 75, of LaFayette died Sunday, July 12, 1998, 
at her residence.
   Mrs. Thrower was born in Chambers County on Dec. 22, 1922, daughter of the late 
Bessie Lashley Bailey and Dewey Bailey.  She had retired from West Point Pepperell's 
Shawmut Mill after 43 years of service with the company.  She was a member of Plant 
City Baptist Church.
   Surviving are a daughter, Marie Sanders of LaFayette; two grandchildren; two 
great-grandchildren; a brother, George Bailey Jr. of Huntsville; and three sisters, 
Virginia Fuller of Roanoke, Nellie Royster of Wadley and Jewell Earles of Valley.
   Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, at Resthaven Cemetery with 
the Rev. Jim Abbott officiating.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Jim Curtis Wade

   (CAMP HILL) The funeral service for Jim Curtis Wade, 52, of Camp Hill was 2 p.m. 
Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Langley Chapel in Camp Hill.  Burial followed in Pine Grove 
Cemetery in Malone.  The Revs. John Mann and Bill Gandy officiated.
   Mr. Wade, who died Thursday, July 9, in Alex City, was born Jan. 29, 1946, 
in Randolph County.
   Survivors include his wife, Vicki Wade of Camp Hill; two sons, Clint Wade and Pat 
Wade of Camp Hill; his mother, Evie F. Wade of Atlanta; his brother, Mike Wade of 
Birmingham; three sisters, Laura Taylor of Douglasville, Ga., Margaret Fisher of 
Greenville, S.C., and Carolyn Mumford of Atlanta; four grandchildren; and several nieces, 
nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

Walter Berry Webb

   (NILES, Mich.) The funeral service for Walter Berry Webb, 78, of Niles, Mich., 
formerly of LaFayette, was Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist 
Church, LaFayette, with the Rev. Cornelius Reese Jr. officiating.  Burial was in Handy 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Webb died Tuesday, July 7, in Niles.
   Mr. Webb was a World War II veteran and settled in Michigan after the conflict ended.  
He worked for many years as a foundryman for Clark Equipment.
   He is survived by his wife, Patsy Webb; four sisters, Minnie Jackson, Annie M. Smith, 
Sally Parker and Evelyn Webb; one brother, Jack Webb; two stepchildren and many 
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
   Vines Funeral Home of LaFayette was in charge of arrangements.

OBITUARIES:

Jerry Wayne Baggett

   (ROANOKE) Jerry Wayne Baggett, 39, of Roanoke died Monday, July 13, 1998, 
at his residence.
   Funeral services were Thursday, July 16, at 2 p.m. at Seleeta Baptist Church, with burial 
in Bradford Cemetery, Goodwater.  The Rev. Jeffrey Rosser officiated.
   Mr. Baggett was born Aug. 11, 1958, son of Willie Baggett Jr. and the late Darnetta 
Baggett.  He was a line operator at Amoco Fabrics in Roanoke.
   Survivors include his wife, Diane Baggett of Roanoke; his daughter, Carmelia Faye 
Baggett of Alex City; his father, Willie Baggett Jr. of Alex City; two brothers, Willie 
James Baggett and James Earl Baggett of Alex City; his grandmother, Lizzie Ellington of 
Kellyton; a mother-in-law, Fannie Spratling of Wadley; seven sisters-in-law; five 
brothers-in-law; one granddaughter; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and 
other relatives and friends.
   Arrangements were by Wright's Funeral Home, Alex City.

Jeffrey Alan Noles

   (DOUGLASVILLE, Ga.) Jeffrey Alan Noles, 25, of Douglasville, Ga., died Thursday, 
July 16, 1998.
   He was born in Carroll County, Ga., May 14, 1973, son of Jimmy Haynes and Barbara 
Robinson Noles.  He was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Sardis Baptist 
Church, and a salesperson at Home Depot, Austell, Ga.
   Survivors include his parents, Jimmy Haynes and Barbara Robinson Noles of Graham; 
his maternal grandparents, V. O. and Lucille Banks Robinson of Waco, Ga.; his paternal 
grandmother, Zettie Noles of Graham; and a brother, Randy Noles of Graham.
   Funeral services were Saturday, July 18, at 3 p.m. (EDT) at Sardis Baptist Church, with 
the Rev. Darnell Teal and the Rev. Roy Frashier officiating.  Pallbearers were Tony 
Robinson, Scott Ottwell, Wesley Clackum, Junior Noles, Jon Noles and Ryan Conger.  
Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Rainwater-West Funeral Home, Bowdon, Ga.

John Will House

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for John Will House, 57, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
July 18, 1998, at 11 a.m. at High Pine Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Bobby 
Kirby officiating.
   Mr. House died Thursday, July 16, at his home after an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Chambers and Randolph counties, he was born Dec. 19, 1940, 
son of John Tom and Mary Will Howard House.  He was a member of Solomon Masonic 
Lodge #74 in LaFayette.
   Survivors include his wife, Olivia Moore House; three daughters, Melissa H. Kirby, 
Rita H. Yarbrough and B. J. House; and one granddaughter, Ariel Kirby, all of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Gerald Allen, Norman Wade, Keith Nelson, Gary Nelson, Chris Ray, 
Dave Strain, Wayne Strain and Jimmy Fetner.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Lottie Smith

   (PENTON) Lottie Smith, 88, of Penton died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at her residence.  
Graveside services were Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at Penton Church of God Cemetery, 
with the Revs. Clifford DeLee and John Cole officiating.
   Mrs. Smith is survived by two sisters, Jessie Stewart of Lanett and Eva Puckett of 
Roanoke; one brother, Nick Bolan of Roanoke; four grandchildren; nine great- 
grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
   Mrs. Smith was born in Talladega County on May 22, 1910.  She was a retired nurse 
at the old Batson Hospital in LaFayette.  She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in 
Chambers County.
   Memorial donations may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice.

Gladys Elizabeth Nolen

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Gladys Elizabeth Nolen, 84, of Roanoke were at 
2 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 1998, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Al 
Dykeman, Earl Rollins and Thomas Boykin officiating.  Burial followed in Randolph 
Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Nolen died July 13, 1998, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika following 
a long illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born June 9, 1914, daughter of James 
Milton and Reva Young Nix.  She had been employed as a retail store clerk.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, John William Nolen.
   Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Hayes of Woodland, Sara Jones of Wadley, 
and Patricia Hood of Opelika; three sons, Jerry Nolen and Jimmy Nolen of Roanoke and 
Johnny Nolen of Woodland; three sisters, Willie Jo Newton and Millerea Brown of Valley 
and Bernice Fetner of Roanoke; one brother, Curtis Nix of Valley; 14 grandchildren; 
24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were James Johnson, Terry Pike, Joseph Pike, Richard Jones, 
Brandon McDaniel and Ray Arrington.

Mary I. Lovvorn

   (ALEXANDRIA) Services for Mary I. Lovvorn, 66, of Alexandria were Thursday, 
July 16, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Theron 
Williams officiating.  Interment was in Edgemont Cemetery.
   Mrs. Lovvorn is survived by her husband, Clyde Lovvorn; two daughters, Agnes 
Calhoun and Wanda Pitts; one son, Randy Lovvorn; two sisters, Nadine Ward and 
Bernice Taft; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Lovvorn was a native of Randolph County and a resident of Calhoun County for 
the past 45 years.  She was retired from Samson Cordage with 22 years of service.  She 
was a member of Eastern Start and a grandparent volunteer at Alexandria Elementary 
School.  She was of the Baptist faith.

Onie Cordell Bradley

   (WEDOWEE) The funeral service for Onie Cordell Bradley, 77, of Wedowee was at 
11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 1998, at Bethel West Baptist Church with the Rev. David 
Holcombe officiating.  Burial followed at Valley Grove Cemetery.
   Mrs. Bradley died Wednesday, July 22, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, 
following a short illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Sept. 5, 1920, daughter of James 
Tom and Sara Rebecca White.  She had been employed with Higgins Manufacturing and 
was a member of Bethel West Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, 
Peggy Moretz.
   Survivors include her husband, Henry S. Bradley Jr. of Wedowee; two daughters, 
Shirley Long and Margaret Huey, both of Wedowee; three sons, Jack Bradley, Joe Tom 
Bradley and Johnny Ray Bradley, all of Wedowee; one brother, Newman White of 
Wedowee; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.

Maggie Lucille Brooks Waters

   (WEDOWEE) The funeral service for Magie Lucille Brooks Waters of Wedowee was 
held at Benefield Funeral Chapel at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 25, 1998, with the Revs. J. D. 
Bearden and Leford Waters officiating.  Burial followed at Valley Grove Cemetery.
   Mrs. Waters died Tuesday, July 21, at her home.
   She was born Sept. 7, 1919, in Clay County, daughter of Joseph A. and Maggie F. 
Swope Brooks.  She had been employed with Tyson Foods, was a member of Folsom 
Senior Citizens and was a Baptist.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
C. B. Waters.
   Survivors include three sisters, Lillian Jane Wade of Jay, Fla., and Edith Estelle 
Sprayberry and Marie Brooks Saxon, both of Pensacola, Fla.
   Pallbearers were nephews.

Josie P. Tatum

   (ATLANTA) Josie P. Tatum, 84, of Atlanta, died Sunday, July 19, 1998, 
at St. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta.
   Mrs. Tatum was a member of First Baptist Church of Atlanta.  She was laid to rest 
Tuesday, July 21, at 1 p.m. in Arlington Cemetery in Sandy Springs, Ga.
   Mrs. Tatum is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lucille Owens of Rock Mills, Mrs. Lou 
Butler of Roanoke and Mrs. Midylene Banks of LaGrange, Ga.; one niece and three 
nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Tatum.
   H. M. Patterson was in charge of arrangements.

Kinnes Stevens

   (ROANOKE) The funeral service for Kinnes Stevens, 74, of Roanoke was Thursday, 
July 23, 1998, at 2 p.m. at Wehadkee Baptist Church, Roanoke, with Bishop C. L. Wilkes 
officiating.  Burial followed at Wehadkee Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Stevens died Saturday, July 18.
   Survivors include six nieces, Cora Mae Emory, Farris Tucker, Velma Anderson, Peggy 
Trammell, Ruby Smith and Sara Eva Phillips; four nephews, Savoy Stevens, K. C. 
Stevens, Grady Stevens and Steve Stevens; and a host of great-nieces and nephews.
   Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Cecil W. Hornsby

   (LANETT) Cecil W. Hornsby, 80, of Lanett died Friday, July 17, 1998, 
at Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   He is survived by a daughter, Wynette Williams of Lanett; a son, Garland Manley Jr. of 
Lanett; three sisters, Lorene Godfrey of Virginia Beach, Va., Thelma Lauderdale of Lanett 
and Loyce Virada Brand of Andalusia; two brothers, Rance Hornsby of Jonesboro, Ga., 
and Delano Hornsby of Columbus, Ga.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 
and one great-great-grandchild.
   The funeral service was at Lanett Congregational Christian Church at 2 p.m. on Sunday, 
July 19, with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.  The Rev. Roy Bain officiated.
   Mr. Hornsby was born in Chambers County on July 26, 1917.  He has been employed 
with West Point Pepperell at Martex Towels.  He was a veteran of World War II, serving 
with the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations and earning five battle stars.  
He fought in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany.  He was a member of Lanett 
Congregational Christian Church and the West Point Pepperell 50 Year Club.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home of Valley.

   (ASHLAND) Graveside funeral services for James Lon Nathan "J. L." Nelson, 83, of 
Ashland were Saturday, July 25, 1998, at 1 p.m. at Valley Grove Cemetery with the Rev. 
Billy East officiating.  Burial will follow.
   Mr. Nelson died Thursday, July 23, at Lineville Nursing Facility after a long period of 
declining health.
   He was born in Randolph County, Sept. 22, 1914, son of T. L. and Rhodia Nelson.  
He was self-employed as a farmer.
   Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Sheppard of Opelika, Dianne Hollis of 
Cusseta and Rita White of Ashland; two sons, Leroy Nelson of Delta and Billy Nelson of 
Valley; two sisters, Ethel Brooks of LaFayette and Lillian Dykes of Corpus Christi, Texas; 
one brother, Melvin Nelson of Birmingham; seven grandchildren and three great- 
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Dereck White, Jimmy Nelson, Jeffrey Owens, Kendall White, 
Clyde Hollis and Tyler Nelson.

Ella Louise Butler

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Ella Louise Butler, 81, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
July 26, 1998, at 3 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, with the Rev. S. T. Janney officiating.  
Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Butler died Friday, July 24, at LaFayette Nursing Home in Chambers County.
   A Randolph County native, she was born Aug. 2, 1916, daughter of Albert Brewer and 
Nora Pope Cannon.  She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Baptist Church.  Her 
husband, Hershel Davis Butler, preceded her in death.
   Survivors include two daughters, Jean B. Hill of LaFayette and Ruth B. Mitchum of 
Roanoke; one son, John Butler of Roanoke; one sister, Barbara Dillard of Columbia, S.C.; 
one brother, Ocie Cannon of Cusseta; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tracy Hill, David Hill, Ronald Mitchum, Keith Mitchum, Wayne Ford 
and Jimmy Watson.

Frances Smith Keeble

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Frances Smith Keeble, 71, of Roanoke were Monday,

   Mrs. Keeble died Saturday, July 25, at Lakeland Regional Hospital in Lakeland, Fla.
   A Randolph County native, she was born June 3, 1927, daughter of Ernest and Lucy 
Mae Hester Smith.  She had worked for Palm Beach Company as a sewing machine 
operator.  Her husband, Junior Keeble, preceded her in death.
   Survivors include two daughters; one sister, Ruby Patterson of Roanoke; one brother, 
Ridley Smith of Rock Mills; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Don Johnson, Jackie Keeble, Danny Smith, Leonard Patterson, 
Jody Driver and Kenneth Nix.

at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Heard officiating.  Interment was in Oak Grove A.M.E. 
Church cemetery.
   Surviving are one son, Jerome Cooley of Bowdon, Ga.; one brother, James F. Houston 
of Heflin; four sisters, Lizzie Bowden of Atlanta, Gloria Cooley of Newell, Martha 
Prothro of Carrollton, Ga., and Mary Maffet of Hamilton, Ohio; one grandchild, Sheryl 
Lynn Jordan of Newell; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Wilson Beverly

   (ROANOKE) Graveside funeral services for Wilson Beverly 86, of Roanoke will be at

   Mr. Beverly died Monday, July 27, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Beverly was born July 1, 1912, son of Robert E. Lee 
and Dona Ella Rainey Beverly.  He served in the Army during World War II and was 
retired for Alabama Power Company, where he worked as an auditor.  He was a member 
of White's Chapel Methodist Church and Woodsmen of the World.
   Survivors include a sister, Ella Mae Langley of Roanoke, and a host of nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers will be nephews.

George Monroe McLeod

   (FOLEY) George Monroe McLeod, 88, a native of Randolph County and a long-time 
resident of Foley, died Sunday, July 26, 1998.
   Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Gulf Shores First Baptist 
Church.  Burial will follow in Pine Rest Memorial Park in Foley.
   Survivors include a son, Dr. Kenneth McLeod of Foley; a daughter, Judy Turner of 
Mobile; a brother, Woodrow W. McLeod of Lineville; nine grandchildren; and four 
great-grandchildren.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Lions Club of Gulf Shores or Gulf Shores 
Baptist Church.
