OBITUARIES:

Amos Aaron 'Red' Rice

   (NEWELL) Services for Amos Aaron "Red" Rice, 66, of Newell were Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at 2 p.m. 
at Harmony Congregational Methodist Church, with the Rev. Julian Murphy officiating.  Burial was in 
the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Rice died Tuesday, Feb. 24, at his home.
   Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Sheats and Kim Rice, both of Newell; two grandchildren; two 
sisters, Joyce Cushing and Nora Ragsdale of Newell; two brothers, Quinton Rice of LaGrange, Ga., and 
Paul Rice of Newell; and his stepmother, Claudia Rice of Pine Hill.
   Pallbearers were Winford "Wimp" Pollard, Brandon Cushing, Willie Rice, Mike Rice, Danny Nolen and 
Michael Kimbrell.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Rice was born Aug. 17, 1937, son of Charlie and Carrie Gosdin Rice.  
He was a member of Pinetucky Baptist Church and worked as a carpenter.  He was preceded in death by 
three brothers, John, Shelley Fred and Curtis Rice.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Kevin Brown Wright Jr. (infant)

   (WEDOWEE) Baby Kevin Brown Wright Jr. of Wedowee died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Northeast 
Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Services will be Wednesday, March 3, at 1 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, with Pastor 
Joseph R. Brown officiating.
   He is survived by his parents, Kevin Wright and Veronica Marable Wright; a sister, Chelsea Wright; 
a brother, Jamahrio "J.T." Wright; and his grandparents, John and Bernice Wright and James Marable 
and the late Dorothy Wilbur.
   Arrangements are by Roanoke Funeral Home.

Debra Hamlin 'Sam' Spears

   (ROANOKE) Memorial services for Debra Hamlin "Sam" Spears, 48, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. on 
Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Union Baptist Church in Delta.
   "Sam" died Saturday, Feb. 28, at Bethany House in Auburn after a courageous battle with cancer.  She 
was born Feb. 13, 1956, in Jacksonville, Fla., but had been a resident of Roanoke for the past 20 years.
   Survivors include her former husband, Wesley Spears; her mother, Melvina McDaniel; four sisters, 
Diann Leonard of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Jo Ann Hamlin, Billie Frye and Patricia Harvel of Roanoke; 
seven nieces and nephews and one greatniece.
   The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to help defray the costs 
associated with an extended illness.
   Arrangements were by Frederick's Funeral Home, Opelika.

Lucile Collier Hoffman

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Lucile Collier Hoffman, 99, of Roanoke were Tuesday, March 2, 
2004, at 2:30 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery, with Dr. Frank McCook officiating.
   Mrs. Hoffman died Sunday, Feb. 29, at her home.
   Survivors include three sisters, Sarah Harris and Virginia Hammontree of Roanoke and Mary Finney 
of Pasadena, Texas' and several nieces and nephews.
   A lifelong resident of this area, Mrs. Hoffman was born Dec. 24, 1904, daughter of John Will and Lena 
Charlotte Vinson Collier.  She was a homemaker and a member of Antioch Christian Church.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Henry W. Hoffman.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Ivlyn Caldwell Fetner

   (ROANOKE) Services for lvlyn Caldwell Fetner, 81, of Roanoke were Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, 
at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ken Griffith and the Rev. Bobby Kirby 
officiating.  Burial was at High Pine Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Fetner died Thursday, Feb. 26, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Burl J. Fetner of Roanoke; two sons, Clifford Moncus of 
Camp Hill and James L. Moncus of Jesup, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several 
nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Kevin Moncus, Justin Dalton, Phillip Moncus, Kenneth Wood Jr., Jeremy Wood, 
Corey Bates, Josh Wood and Tracey Moncus.
   Honorary pallbearers were I.B. Moore, Loyd Bolt, Benny Satterwhite, Wilber Steward, Fred Burks, 
Manley Clack and Herbert Denham.
   A Clay County native, Mrs. Fetner was born March 29, 1922, daughter of Henry Garfield and Anna 
Walker Caldwell.  She was a member of High Pine Baptist Church and had been employed as a clerk with 
C&S Pharmacy.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Earnest Voyd Caldwell.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Charlie Joe Sims

   (ROANOKE) Charlie Joe Sims, 67, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at his residence.
   Services were Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Riley Street, Roanoke, with the Revs. 
Gilbert Staples, Willie Clyde Houston, William Dillard and Jeffery Rosser officiating.  Burial was in 
Skyview Memorial Gardens.
   Survivors include his wife, Dian Sims of Roanoke; his mother, Annie Wilkerson of Roanoke; two 
daughters, Stephanie Pullin of Atlanta and Shondrell Bell of Roanoke; two stepsons, Jermaine Bell and 
Dewayne Bell of Roanoke; two brothers, William Wilkerson of Atlanta and Sylvester Wilkerson of Miami, 
Fla.; his mother-in-law, Mary T. Bell of Roanoke; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in law; seven 
grandchildren; and other special relatives and friends.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

David Dennis Fowler

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for David Dennis Fowler, 72, of Roanoke will be Thursday, March 4, 
2004, at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Dorsey White officiating.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 
10:30 a.m.
   Mr. Fowler died Sunday, Feb. 29, at his residence.
   Survivors include his wife, Eudine W. Fowler of Roanoke; and a sister, Bobbie Jean Parks of Oxford.  
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Fowler was a native of Randolph County, born July 28, 1931, son of Lonnie and Flora Thrasher 
Fowler.  He had been employed in the textile industry and at Plantation Patterns.  He was preceded in 
death by his parents and two sisters, Verna Lewis and Opealene Loveless, and three brothers, Melvis 
Fowler, Bennis Fowler and Donald Fowler.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Pauline Elliott Camp

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Pauline E. Camp, 82, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at West 
Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Mrs. Camp, born Sept. 11, 1921, in Wadley, was the daughter of the late Freeman and Vera Carlton 
Elliott.  She had lived in LaGrange most of her life, had worked in textiles and was a homemaker.  She 
was a member of Southwest LaGrange Baptist Church, where she was in the Adult III Charity Class and 
was secretary, group leader for Circle III and outreach leader.
   Survivors include two daughters, Allene Reeves of Americus, Ga., and Marcia Johnson of Kennesaw, 
Ga.; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two sons-in-law; six sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and 
several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Camp.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Southwest LaGrange Baptist church with the 
Revs. Fred Buchanan and John Sparks officiating.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
   Flowers will be accepted or those desiring may make contributions to Southwest LaGrange Baptist 
Church in memory of Mrs. Camp.
   Arrangements were by Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home, LaGrange.

Luther E. 'L.E.' McKay Jr.

   (HAMPTON, Va.) Luther E. "L.E." McKay Jr., 76, of Hampton, Va., formerly of West Point, Ga., died 
Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at V.A. Hospital in Hampton.
   Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 3, at 2 p.m. at McCarthy Funeral Home Chapel in 
West Point with Dr. David Hendrix officiating.  Burial will follow in Marseilles Cemetery in West Point.
   Mr. McKay is survived by his wife, Ruth Truitt McKay of Hampton; one daughter, Donna Green of 
Hayes, Va.; one son, Lane McKay of Yorktown, Va.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; 
and one sister, Clarice Caldwell of Hope Hull.
   Born Feb. 26, 1928, in Roanoke, Mr. McKay worked as a sales agent for Gulf Life Insurance Co. for 
several years.  After retirement from his insurance job because of ill health, he worked as a handyman.  
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force after World War II.  He loved his family and enjoyed traveling.  
Mr. McKay was of the Baptist faith.  He was the son of the late Geneva Godbee McKay and Luther E. 
McKay Sr.
   Arrangements were by McCarthy Funeral Home, West Point.

Tricia Gray

   (VALLEY) Alicia Gray, 32, of Valley died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at her residence.
   Mrs. Gray was a native of LaGrange, Ga., born March 26, 1971.  She was employed by West Point 
Stevens and was a member of Fairfax First Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Walter E. Gray; two sons, Anthony Clay Swinford and Corey Warner 
Gray of Valley; three daughters, Amber Renae Pinkard of Roanoke and Kacie Ja Need Gray and Paeton 
Makall Gray of Valley; her mother, Judy Tarwater of LaGrange; a sister, Tina Fotsch of Atlanta; a 
brother, Christopher Wes Self of LaGrange; and her grandmother, Erma Lashley of LaGrange.  She was 
preceded in death by her father, Wadeus E. Self.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 
with burial in Fairfax Cemetery.  The Rev. Steve York officiated.
   Memorial donations may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Jessie Durl 'Pop' Hanner

   (LANETT) Jessie Durl "Pop" Hanner, 66, of Lanett died Sunday evening, Feb. 29, 2004, at his 
residence.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, March 2, at 11 a.m. EST at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home 
Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Ron Williams officiating.  Graveside services were Tuesday at 2 p.m. EST 
at Providence Methodist Church Cemetery in Delta.
   Mr. Manner is survived by three sons, James Manner of Lanett, Jesse L. Hanner of Cassopolis, Mich., 
and Jerry Hanner of Valley; two daughters, Sandra Mitchell of Niles Mich., and Christy Williams of 
Valley; two brothers, Chester Hanner and Ed Hanner, both of LaFayette; two sisters Zolima Hunter of 
Kelleyton and Maudine Hunter of Woodland; and 10 grandchildren.
   Born June 14, 1937, in Lineville, Mr. Hanner loved to play the guitar and tell jokes.  He was the son of 
the late Dora Bell Dixon Hanner and Arthur Russell Hanner.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice in his memory.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

J. Wilson 'Boots' Reaves

   (WEST POINT, Ga.) J. Wilson "Boots" Reaves, 81, of West Point, Ga., died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, 
at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   Funeral services were Sunday, Feb. 29, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in 
Valley with the Rev. Kenneth Cole officiating.  Burial followed at Hillcrest Cemetery.
   Mr. Reaves is survived by his wife, Brenda Reaves; two daughters, Diane Moore and Diana Spears, both 
of Lanett one son, Kevin Upchurch of Lanett; seven grandchildren, three brothers, Paul Reaves of Wadley, 
Lee Reaves of New Hampshire and Aaron Reaves of Vidalia, Ga.; three sisters Mrs. Annie Crouch of 
Vidalia, Mrs. Alma Grizzard of Ty Ty, Ga., and Mrs. Grace Todd of Carrollton, Ga.; and five great-
grandchildren.
   Mr. Reaves was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Chambers County.  He was retired from the U.S. Army with more 
than 20 years of service.  He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.  He was a Shriner and 
member of Lanett Masonic Lodge 656 F&M and attended Bethel Baptist Church.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Heart Fund, 
Alzheimer's Foundation or to Bethel Baptist Church in his memory.

OBITUARIES:

Velma Terry Williams

   (ROANOKE) Velma Terry Williams, 84, of Roanoke died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Bethany House 
in Auburn.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, March 9, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Riley Street, Roanoke, with 
interment in Rock Mills Baptist Church Cemetery.  Officiating were the Rev. Gilbert Staples, pastor, and 
Rev. Willie T. Edmondson, eulogist.
   She is survived by three sons, Roy Terry and Rev. William Terry of Roanoke and Rudolph Terry of 
Atlanta; two adopted daughters, Gloria Jean Jordan Sadler of Conyers, Ga., and Charis "Pat" Jordan of 
Youngstown, Ohio; a brother, Lee Andrew Wilson of Baltimore, Md.; three daughters-in-law; a son-in-
law; seven step-children; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and 
many other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Reece Wilson; 
brothers, Joseph Heard Jr., Oscar Lee Heard and Brady Wilson; husband, Jesse A. Terry; son, Jesse A. 
Terry Jr.; adopted daughter, Addie Jordan; and two grandchildren.
   Mrs. Williams was born in Cragford to Joseph Heard Sr. and Lula Trammell Heard on Dec. 20, 1919.  
She attended elementary and high school at Randolph County Training School in Roanoke, where she 
graduated with the highest honor in the class.  She confessed her faith in God at First Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, in 1932.  She married Jesse A. Terry on Dec. 20, 1939.  She was co-founder and designer/
seamstress for Terry Upholstery and co-founder and first production manager of Terry Manufacturing 
Company Inc.  Mrs. Terry joined, Rock Mills Baptist Church in 1952 to bring her family all together in 
one church home.  After 31 fruitful years at Rock Mills in the Southwestern Union District, she returned 
to serve at First Baptist.  After the passing of Mr. Terry in 1988, she married deacon Billy Ed Williams on 
March 24, 1990.  Mrs. Terry-Williams was then associated with Canaan Baptist Church for several years 
before returning to her first church home, where she served until her death.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church Children's 
Program, P.O. Box 129, Roanoke, AL 36274.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Linda Ware

   (ROANOKE) Linda Ware, 51, of Roanoke died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at University of Alabama 
Medical Center, Birmingham.
   Funeral services will be Thursday, March 11, at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 653 County Rd. 
667, Roanoke, with the Rev. Myris Bell, pastor, and Revs. Calvin Trammell, L. B. Houston and W. 
H.Trammell.  Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Ware was a native of Randolph County.
   She is survived by her husband, Calvin Phillips of Roanoke; her mother, Laura Mae Pate of Roanoke; a 
son, Calvin Jonathan Ware of Roanoke; a daughter, Jennifer Ann Ware of Roanoke; a sister, Virginia 
Henderson of Roanoke; a brother, Hilliard Ware Sr. of Five Points; a brother-in-law; three aunts; one 
uncle; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Visitation will be Wednesday, March 10, after 10 a.m.  Mrs. Ware's body will be placed in the church 
one hour prior to the funeral service.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Minnie Lee Parker Gross

   (WOODLAND) Funeral Services for Minnie Lee Parker Gross, 94, of Woodland were Sunday, March 7, 
2004, at 2 p.m. at Rocky Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Clayton Scott officiating.  Interment 
followed in the adjoining church cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of the 
arrangements.
   Mrs. Gross died Friday, March 5, at NHC Healthcare at Golden Springs in Anniston.
   Survivors include two daughters, Janie Traylor of Woodland and Wilma Kelley of Bartlett, Tenn.; a son, 
Jimmie F. Gross of Savannah, Ga.; two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Josie 
Teal and Clois Lashley of Woodland and Effie Walls and Winnie Baker of LaGrange, Ga.; a sister-in-law; 
two sons-in-law; and 30 nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were men of Rocky Branch Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Gross was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, born June 24, 1909, the daughter of 
Joseph and Viola Wilson Parker.  She was a graduate of Randolph County High School, a homemaker and 
member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church, where she was the senior ladies' Sunday school teacher and was 
honored on her 90th birthday with "Minnie Lee Gross Day."  She was a charter member of Hobson 
Homemakers Club and an officer of the Randolph County Council of Extension Service.  She was 
preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carey Arlin Gross; two sisters, Iva Dewberry and Tessie Ware; 
and five brothers, Loyd, Willie, Vernon, Brewell and Garvis Parker.
   In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Rocky Branch Baptist Church, 12215 Co. 
Rd. 59, Woodland, AL 36280.

Eunice Sims

   (ASHLAND) - Services for Mr. Eunice Sims, 77, of Ashland were Monday, March 8, 2004, at 2 p.m. 
at Bethel Baptist Church in Ashland with the Rev. Darryl Wood, Rev. Arthur Welch and Rev. Norman 
Gibbon officiating.  Burial was in Bethel Memorial Garden with Sims Funeral Service in charge.
   Mr. Sims died Thursday, March 4, at Clay County Hospital.
   Survivors include three daughters, Mary Joyce Ackles and Ethel Sims, both of Ashland, and Betty Hayes 
of Lineville; a son, Donald Sims of Ashland; four sisters, Mary Herren of Wedowee, Pat Simpson of 
Chicago, Ill.; Rosie Lee Ware of Ashland and Sara Gray of Maywood, Ill.; 26 grandchildren, 38 great-
grandchild[ren] and a great-great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were friends of the family.
   Mr. Sims was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County.  He was retired from Wellborn Cabinet Co. 
and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two 
daughters, a son, two brothers and a sister.

Clarence 'Mickey' Gibson

   (LAGRANGE) Clarence "Mickey" Gibson, 55, of LaGrange, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at West 
Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   He was born Aug. 30, 1948, in Hogansville, Ga., the son of Herschel A. and Idella Gaddy Gibson.  He 
worked as a mechanic at Fryers Tire Center for many years.  He was a member of Franklin Road Baptist 
Church.
   He is survived by two daughters, Michelle Emory and Donna Turner; one step-daughter, Shea Reynolds, 
all of LaGrange; one brother, Kenneth Gibson of Franklin, Ga.; two sisters, Karen Lewis of Griffin, Ga., 
and Gayle Thompson of Roanoke; one sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law; five grandchildren; several 
nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Susan Sherrod.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7, in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with the 
Rev. Aaron McCollough officiating.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
   Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Sylvester McFarlin

   (ROANOKE) Sylvester McFarlin, 39, of Roanoke died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in Roanoke.
   Funeral services were Monday, March 8, at 1 p.m. at Sweet Home Baptist Church, Five Points, with the 
Revs. Tony Harrison, Allen Simpson and Ricky Cofield officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   He is survived by two daughters, Shonjetta Brown of Lanett and Marquitta Ware of Roanoke; his father, 
Sam McFarlin Sr. of Roanoke; a sister, Beverly Sutton of Roanoke; and three brothers, Sam McFarlin Jr. 
of LaGrange, Ga., and Robert McFarlin and David Blakes of Roanoke.
   Arrangements were by Roanoke Funeral Home.

Linda A. Bass

   (LANETT) Linda A. Bass, 57, of Lanett, formerly of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, 
at her home.
   Mrs. Bass, born April 8, 1946, in Randolph County, was the daughter of Mrs. Boyce Alsabrook of 
LaGrange and the late Grover Wilson Alsabrook. She was co-owner of J&L Auto Body Shop Supplies 
Inc., a beautician and a homemaker.  She formerly worked at Ms. Pat's Early Learning Center and was a 
member of New Hope Baptist Church in Fredonia.
   Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, John F. Bass of Lanett; a son, Chris Bass of 
Lanett; a daughter, Paige B. Howard of LaGrange; two sisters, Brenda Arrington of Franklin, Ga., and 
Shirley Adams of Lanett; a son-in-law; three brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 6 , in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with the Rev. 
Allen Smith officiating.  Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

Marvin Ester

   (ROANOKE) Marvin Ester, 74, of Roanoke died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at West Georgia Medical 
Center, LaGrange.
   Services were Saturday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, with the Revs. Myris L. Bell, 
Jeffery D. Rosser and Calvin Trammell officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Alberta Ester of Roanoke; two daughters, Freda Lindsey and Myrtis 
Slaughter of Chicago, Ill.; four sons, Charles Ester and James Ester of Roanoke and Marvin Ester Jr. and 
Thomas Ester of Chicago; two brothers, Charlie Luther Ester and Roy Ester of Chicago; seven 
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

   (WADLEY) Addie Phillips, 73, of Wadley died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Lineville Nursing 
Facility, Lineville.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 10, at County Line Baptist Church, Wadley, with the Revs. 
Jeffery D. Rosser and William H. Trammell officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral service.
   Survivors include a daughter, Faye Poole of Wadley; two sisters, Seanomia Bassett of Detroit, Mich., 
and Annie Weaver of Wadley; five brothers, John Wyatt Weaver and Rusher Weaver of Wadley and Ralph 
Weaver, Raymond Weaver and Richard Weaver of Detroit; three grandsons and three great-
grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Phillips, and two brothers, George 
Washington Weaver and A. C. Weaver.

Thelma Gladney

   (WARNER ROBINS, Ga.) Thelma Gladney, 87, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004.  Services were at 2 p.m. 
on Sunday, March 7, at First United Methodist Church of Warner Robins, with entombment following at 
Magnolia Park Mausoleum.  Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church.
   Mrs. Gladney was born on May 20, 1916.  She was retired from Watson's Nursery, where she worked as 
a landscaper and floral designer.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Warner Robins.  
Her husband, Jesse C. Gladney, father, B. C. Banks, and mother, Clyde Banks, preceded her in death.

   (RANBURNE) Services for Robert Elmer "Bud" Cosper, 91, of Ranburne were Wednesday, March 2,

Ridge Cemetery with Dryden Funeral Home of Heflin in charge.
   Mr. Cosper died Monday, March 1, at Carrollton Nursing and Rehab Center in Georgia.
   Survivors include his wife, Gladys Cosper; a daughter and her husband, Laura Ann and Virgil Gunnells 
of Ranburne; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tommy Edwards, Joey Hand, Kelly Harper, Fred Lovvorn, Michael McManus and 
Tony McManus.
   Mr. Cosper, a Randolph County native, had lived in Cleburne County most of his life.  He was a 
member of Gold Ridge Baptist Church.  A World War II veteran, he had been employed as a laborer.

   Mrs. Woodlee died Monday, March 8, at Roanoke Healthcare.
   Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Earl of Roanoke; Sylvia Covington of Douglasville, Ga., and 
Mae Humphries of Pell City; three sons, Victor Woodlee of Hiram, Ga., and Joe Woodlee and John 
Woodlee, both of Roanoke; 17 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Jeff Covington, Len Covington, Allen Overton, Lee Covington, Willard Earl Jr. and 
Christopher Lancaster.
   A Shelby County native, Mrs. Woodlee was born May 2, 1915.  She was a member of Rock Mills 
Church of the Nazarene and had been employed with Wehadkee Yarn Mills.  She was preceded in death 
by her husband, Rev. Lee Woodlee.

Judith Marie Alvis

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Judith Marie Alvis, 64, of Wedowee will be Thursday, March 11, 
2004, at 11 a.m. at Ava United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Samuels and Rev. Danny Wilson 
officiating.  Burial will follow at the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in 
charge.
   The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10.
   Mrs. Alvis died on Tuesday, March 9, at her home.
   Survivors include her husband, Frank L. Alvis of Wedowee; three sons, Mike Alvis of Sharpsburg, Ga., 
Kent Alvis of Wedowee and Chad Alvis of Newnan, Ga.; her mother, Ethel Uhde of Mt. Vernon, Ind.; a 
brother, Jerry Uhde of Cadiz, Ky.; three granddaughters; one grandson; several nieces and nephews; and 
three daughters-in-law.
   Pallbearers will be John Dunn, Jerry Uhde, Larry Montgomery, Mike Alvis, Kent Alvis and Chad Alvis.  
Honorary pallbearers will be the Randolph County Christian Women's Club.
   Mrs. Alvis was born on March 9, 1940, the daughter of Ethel Rhodes Uhde and the late Ralph Uhde.  
She grew up in Poseyville, Ind.  She and Frank raised their children in Princeton, Ind., then moved the 
family to Newnan.  They have resided in Wedowee for 6 1/2 years.  She was a member of Ava United 
Methodist Church and Randolph County Christian Women's Club.

Voncile Campbell

   (HARTWELL, Ga.) Voncile Stewart DeLoach Campbell, 90 , of Hartwell, Ga., died Tuesday, March 9, 
2004, at Hart County Hospital.
   Born Nov. 18, 1913, in Randolph County, Ala., she was the daughter of the late John S. Stewart and 
Jessie Moore Stewart.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 
Ellenwood, Ga.
   She is survived by daughters, Barbara D. Burgess of Hartwell, Ga., and Mary Ellen Yarbrough, Long 
Island, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her first 
husband, Edgar Clifford DeLoach; second husband, Harold W. Campbell; son, George S. DeLoach; and a
grandson, Matthew Yarbrough.
   The body was cremated, and a graveside service will be held Saturday, March 13, at 1 p.m. at 
Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.  The Rev. Bill Phares will officiate.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may 
be made to Hart County Hospital Auxiliary, 138 W. Gibson St., Hartwell, GA 30643.

Timothy Brian Lumpkin

   (WOODLAND) Services for Timothy Brian Lumpkin, 33, of Woodland were Thursday, March 11, 
2004, at 2 p.m. at Christiana Baptist Church with the Revs. Bob Bain and Steve White officiating.  Burial 
was in the adjoining cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville in charge.
   Mr. Lumpkin died Dec. 1, 2003.
   Survivors include his wife, Karen Lumpkin of LaFayette; a daughter, Anna Marie Lumpkin of 
LaFayette; a son, Timothy Adam Lumpkin of LaFayette; his mother, Wanda Gail Deese and her husband, 
Dwight, of Woodland; his father, Robert Earl Lumpkin and his wife, Vera, of Lineville; two sisters, 
Virginia Ann Smith of Ranburne and Tammy Regina Watson of Lineville; a half-sister, Tiffany Lumpkin 
of Lineville; and his grandfather, Benjamin Price White.
   Pallbearers were Jerry Smith, Dale Taylor, James A. Lindsey, Jack Morrison, Michael Davis, Gerald 
Watson and Vick Ragsdale.
   Mr. Lumpkin, a Clay County native, had lived in Georgia most of his life.  He was a member of 
Christiana Baptist Church.  He had been employed with Affordable Autos in Carrollton, Ga., as a 
mechanic.  He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Hazel Virginia White.

Wyatt L. Potts Sr.

   (FAIRFAX) Wyatt L. Potts Sr., 89, of Fairfax died Friday, March 12, 2004, at Bethany House.
   Funeral services were Sunday, March 14, at 2 p.m. EST at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home 
Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Steve York officiating.  Burial followed in Resthaven Cemetery.
   Mr. Potts is survived by his wife, Sadie S. Potts; one daughter, Sherry Kent of LaFayette; three sons, 
Sherman Potts of Valley, Wyatt Potts Jr. of Salem and Stanley Potts of Opelika; one brother, Elbert Potts 
of Laurel Hill, Fla.; four sisters, Agnes Perri and Dorothy Mae Dickey, both of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., 
Jean Henderson of Dadeville and Sarah Harrington of Newnan, Ga.; seven grandchildren and 12 
greatgrandchildren; a son-in-law; and three daughters-in-law.
   Born April 9, 1914, in Randolph County, Mr. Potts worked with WestPoint Stevens Fairfax and 
Riverdale Mills.  He was an avid gardener and quail hunter, who also loved to fish.  Mr. Potts was a 
member of Fairfax First Baptist Church, Valley Masonic Lodge No. 516 and was a Shriner with the 
Alcazar Temple in Montgomery.
   In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to East Alabama Hospice in his memory.

Louise Dollar Adcock

   (SLIDELL, La.) Louise Dollar Adcock, 87, of Slidell, La., died Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Greenbriar 
Nursing Home.
   Graveside services were Monday, March 15, at noon in West Point Cemetery in West Point, Ga.
   Mrs. Adcock is survived by two daughters, Needra N. Powell and Merryl A. Weiss, both of Slidell; one 
sister, Bera Marion of Rome, Ga.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   A native of Randolph County, Ala., Mrs. Adcock was a homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her 
siblings, Melvin Dollar, Monroe Dollar, Calvin Dollar, Mozelle Mullins and Edwena Hendry.  She was 
the daughter of the late Charlie M. and Margie Carpenter Dollar.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Adcock's honor to Memorial Hospice and Palliative 
Care, 1045 Florida Ave., Slidell, LA 70453.

with Handley Mills.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Audrey Cleveland Stallings.

   Mr. Gibson died Friday, March 12, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

one son, Dan Gibson of Duncan, S.C.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a son-in-law 
and a daughter-in-law.

   A lifelong Wadley resident, Mr. Gibson was born June 22, 1919, son of John Tyler and Eva Mae Bishop 
Gibson.  He was a World War II Army veteran and a charter member of Wadley Congregational Christian 
Church.  He had retired after 30 years as postmaster of Wadley.

   (WOODLAND) Services for Bryant J. Peg Wilson, 82, of Woodland were Tuesday, March 16, 2004,

officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Wilson died Sunday, March 14, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Mr. Wilson is survived by two brothers, Lamon Wilson and Major Wilson, both of Woodland, and a 
host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Mike Kirby, Bill Prince Jr., J. W. Morgan, Roman Richardson, Gregg Moore and 
Donald Thompson.
   Mr. Wilson was a native of Randolph County, born Aug. 18, 1921, son of William Kay Wilson and 
Estelle Langley Wilson.  He retired from the Randolph County Road Department as a motor grader 
operator and was a member of Napoleon (East) Church of Christ.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 
56 years, Mrs. Lura Prince Wilson; two brothers, Kager Wilson and Newell Wilson; and by four sisters, 
Geneva Wilson, Mittie Wilson, Dora Mae Beckworth and Nora Belle Jones.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

   (PHENIX CITY) Benjamin Lee Pertillo, 33, of Phenix City, formerly of Roanoke, died Tuesday, March

   Mr. Pertillo was a graduate of Randolph County High School.  He was a Gulf War veteran.
   He is survived by a son, Korderro Pertillo of Columbus; his parents, Willie Wesley and Mildred Pertillo 
of Roanoke; a sister, Nanette Phillips of LaFayette; five brothers, Lester Shears of LaGrange, Ga., Willie 
Wesley Pertillo Jr. of Germany, Robert Pertillo of Columbus and Mark and Jerry Pertillo of Roanoke.

   Mr. Pike died Thursday, March 11, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   A Chambers County native, Mr. Pike was born May 25, 1931.  He was retired from Lanett Bleachery & 
Dye Works and was a member of Five Points Methodist Church.
   He is survived by his wife, Doris Pike of Five Points; two sons, Michael Pike of New Albany, Ind., and 
Melvin Pike of Valley; two sisters, Julia Blackston of Fredonia and Mary Barber of Shorter; two brothers, 
Benny Pike and Willie R. Pike of Fredonia; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and two 
daughters-in-law.

Faye Ward Stewart

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Faye Ward Stewart, 86, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at West 
Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Mrs. Stewart, born Sept. 12, 1917, in Graham, was the daughter of the late Thomas W. and Beulah 
Johnson Ward.  She had lived in LaGrange more than 60 years and retired as an inspector with Playtex 
International.  She also worked at the Hillside Plant of Callaway Mills Co., the Troup County school 
system in the lunchroom at Troup High School and was a sitter with the Home Health Department at West 
Georgia Medical Center.  She attended Second Baptist Church.
   Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Allen Reid and Jeannette Stewart of Fayetteville, Ga.; 
two grandchildren; a brother, Celvin Ward of Graham; and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with the 
Rev. Chris Davis officiating.  Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

   Mrs. Brown died Sunday, March 14, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.

   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Brown was born Jan. 16, 1917, daughter of Alonzo Judson and

   (SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla.) Clara Weldon Scott, 88, of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., formerly of Lanett,

   Ms. Scott is survived by two sisters, Lala Ragsdale of Roanoke and Dorothy Smallwood of Opelika; and 
several nieces and nephews.
   Born Feb. 8, 1916, in Penton, Ms. Scott worked with WestPoint Pepperell for 42 years at Lanett Mill.  
She was a member of Lanett First United Methodist Church.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Nora Bell Smith, 88, of Roanoke were Saturday, March 13, 2004,

   Miss Smith died Thursday, March 11, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

   Ms. Ballard died Tuesday, March 9, at her home.

Montgomery and Cynthia Love, Rosa Sterling and Angela Thomas, all of Ashland; two sisters, Ora Blake

   Ms. Ballard, a Randolph County native, lived in Ashland most of her life.  She was a member of Bethel

Ronald C. Sharman

   (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Ronald Clayton Sharman, 45, of Columbus, Ga., died Tuesday, March 9, 2004, 
at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Mr. Sharman was born Dec. 8, 1958, in Randolph County, Ala.  He had lived in Columbus for the past 
15 years, was disabled and was Baptist.
   Survivors include his adopted mother, Bonnie Mae Sharman of LaGrange; birth mother and stepfather, 
Mary Ann and Roy Clark of Hogansville, Ga.; one son, Clyde C. Sharman; brothers, Mark Allen 
Sharman, Billy Clark and Denson Sharman Jr.; sisters, Elizabeth Treadwell, Gail Treadwell and Connie 
Titus; closest friend and companion, Ethel Taylor of Columbus; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; 
and several nieces and nephews.
   Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Shadowlawn Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Hornsby 
officiating.

   (LINEVILLE) Services for Russell T. Kulp, 84, of Lineville were Wednesday, March 10, 2004, 
at 11 a.m. at St. Marks Catholic Church in Ashland with Father Bruce Krause officiating.  Burial was 
at 3 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.
   Mr. Kulp died Monday, March 8, at Lineville Health & Rehabilitation Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Lula Almedia Kulp; three daughters, Cynthia Graham of Carrollton, Ga., 
Sandra Black of Wedowee and Khristie Walton of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Russell P. Kulp of Woodinville, 
Wash.; a sister, Katherine McGraw of Birmingham; a brother, Frank Kulp of Birmingham; seven 
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sons-in-law; a daughter-in-law; a brother-in-law; and 
a sister-in-law.
   Mr. Kulp, a Birmingham native, was a founding member of St. Mark's Catholic Church in Ashland.  
A World War II Air Force veteran, he built hyperbolic cooling towers throughout the United States.  After 
retiring he continued engineering for Alabama Power Company on the R.L. Harris Dam.  He served on 
the Lineville Industrial Board for several years.
   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mark's Catholic Church, 460 Country Club Rd., 
Ashland, AL 36251.

   Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Joene Rains Hall of Phenix City; three daughters, Kim Cook and Judy 
Ruddock, both of Lanett, and Betty LaPlante Sr. of Phenix City; one son, George Henry Hall of Phenix 
City; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law; and a daughter-in-law.
   Born April 25, 1928, in Randolph County, Mr. Hall was retired from Dart Transit Company and was of 
the Baptist faith.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Dunson and Clinton Dunson; and a 
sister, Willie Pearl Dunson.  He was the son of the late John Henry Hall and Maude Posey Hall.
   Arrangements are by Vance Memorial Chapel, Phenix City.

Wanda Sue Ragan

   (RANDOLPH COUNTY) Services for Wanda Sue Ragan, 56, of Randolph County will be Wednesday 
at 3 p.m. at Open Door Baptist Church of Delta with the Revs. J. D. Bearden and Billy Taylor officiating.  
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Ragan died Monday, March 15, in Anniston.
   Survivors include her husband, Jerry Mack Ragan of Heflin; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Ragan of Heflin; 
a son, Jerry Mack Ragan Jr. of Heflin; a sister, Runette Austin of DeArmanville; a brother, Jody Hazel of 
Oxford; three grandchildren; a daughter-in-law; and a brother-in-law.
   Pallbearers were Ernie Bearden, Ray Ragan, Paul Ragan, Daniel Ragan, Chris Pettit and Lynn Burk.
   Mrs. Ragan, a Calhoun County native, had lived the past 15 years in Randolph County.  She was a 
member of Open Door Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Jasper and Elizabeth 
Hazel; a brother, Johnny Hazel; and three sisters, Julian Baggett, Alice Stephens and Marie Williams.

Gloria J. Dixon

   (HEFLIN) Services for Gloria J. Dixon, 58, of Heflin, were Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at 1 p.m. at 
Deliverance Church of Jesus Christ in Anniston with Bishop Via Black officiating.  Burial followed in 
Heflin City Cemetery.
   Ms. Dixon died Friday, March 19, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
   Survivors include two sons, Frederick Dixon of Ravenna, Ohio, and Dexter Dixon of Anniston; a 
daughter, Valerie Dixon of Heflin; seven sisters, Bobbie Horton and Margaret Roberson, both of Gadsden, 
Joyce Pearson of Wedowee, Annie Ackles of Michaelville, Mattie Thomas of Anniston, and Dorothy 
Nunn and Sarah West, both of Heflin; two brothers, Larry Garrett and William Garrett, both of Wedowee; 
and six grandchildren.
   Mrs. Dixon lived in Heflin for the past 27 years.  She was a member of Deliverance Church of Jesus 
Christ, where she was the associate pastor.  She was retired from Cleburne County Nursing Home.

Mae Bowen Tatum

   (THOMASVILLE, Ga.) Mae Bowen Tatum, 97, of Thomasville, Ga., formerly of LaGrange, Ga., died 
Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Camellia Gardens Life Center in Thomasville.
   Mrs. Tatum, born July 24, 1906, in Randolph County, Ala., was the daughter of the late Joseph Stephen 
and Sarah Traylor Bowen.  She had lived in LaGrange most of her life, was a homemaker and a member 
of Open Door Worship Center, where she taught children ages 2 to 10 in Sunday school for 55 years.
   Survivors include three daughters, Martha Tatum Hancock of Thomasville, Elizabeth Tatum Duncan of 
Auburn and Lynda Tatum Veal of Magnolia, Texas; a son, Frank Tatum of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 
13 grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson and several nieces and 
nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, A. A. Tatum, and two sons, Jack Tatum and Jim 
Tatum.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, March 23, at 11 a.m. [i]n the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with the 
Rev. Hansel Parmer officiating.  Burial was in Hillview East Cemetery.
   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Office of Donor 
Services, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY 10506 or to a favorite charity in memory of Mrs. 
Tatum.

Eula Mae Gilliland

   (ROANOKE) Services for Eula Mae Gilliland, 92, of Roanoke, were Saturday, March 20, 2004, 
at 11 a.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Kirby and Rev. S. T. Janney officiating.  Burial 
followed in Cedarwood Cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
   Ms. Gilliland died Thursday, March 18, at Marshall Medical Center North in Arab.
   Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Doug Brooks of Arab, and several nieces, 
nephews and cousins.
   Pallbearers were Chip Cofield, David Cofield, Sammy Hill, Randy Gilliland, Mike Gilliland and Gerson 
Bonner.
   Ms. Gilliland was a native of Clay County, born Feb. 14 1912, the daughter of Amon Gilliland and 
Mary Gabriel Gilliland.  She was retired from Handley Mills and a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Martha Jane Hill Lipham

   (NEWELL) Services for Martha Jane Hill Lipham, 81, of Newell were Friday, March 19, 2004, 
at 2 p.m. at Union Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Mitchell and Rev. Carolyn Hanner officiating.  
Burial followed in the adjoining church cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge of 
the arrangements.
   Mrs. Lipham died Wednesday, March 17, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Survivors include two daughters, Betty Owen and Sue Wakefield of Newell; two sons, Steve R. Lipham 
of Opelika and Tracy D. Lipham of Newell; two brothers, Calvin Hill of Delta and Alvin Hill of Newell; 
seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tommy Hill, Terry Hill, Michael Hill, Donald Hill, Eddie Hill and Larry Hill.
   Mrs. Lipham was a native of Randolph County born Oct. 18, 1922, the daughter of Clint Hill and Lela 
Nix Hill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dellis Lipham, and had retired as a seamstress.

Willie Ruffin Brooks

   (ATLANTA, Ga.) Services for Deacon Willie R. Brooks Sr. of Atlanta were Friday, March 19, 2004, 
at 11 a.m. at Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, Atlanta.  Pastor Roy C. Moffett, Bishop C. T. Curtis, 
Pastor Allen Simpson III and Dr. Curtis T. Tester officiated.  Interment was in Kennedy Memorial 
Gardens, Ellenwood, Ga.
   Deacon Brooks was born Aug. 19, 1919, to the late Cora Barker and Lorenzo Brooks in Chambers 
County, Ala.  He died March 13, 2004.  He joined Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Five Points 
at an early age and later united with Thankful Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta.  In December 1937, 
he married Ella Mae Clifton, and they had ten children.  Two died at birth and two preceded him in death, 
Lorenzo Brooks and Mollie Watkins.
   Deacon Brooks is survived by his wife, Ella Mae Brooks; three sons, Dan Lee Brooks and Willie Ruffin 
Brooks Jr. of Atlanta and Robert Brooks of Toledo, Ohio; three daughters, Willie Lois Carlisle of Five 
Points, Nancy Smith of Jonesboro, Ga., and Lola Colley of Atlanta; one sister, Louise Hines of Detroit, 
Mich.; 39 grandchildren, 87 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, 
nephews, cousins and friends.
   Arrangements were by Geis Thornhill Funeral Home, East Point, Ga.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Rufus Grier Sr., 83, of Roanoke were Saturday, March 20, 2004,

   Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae Grier of Woodland; a son, Rufus Grier Jr. of Atlanta; a daughter, 
Juliet Thurman of Bremen, Ga.; two granddaughters; three grandsons; eight great-grandchildren and 
eight great-great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Grier was preceded in death by six brothers, Jack, Arthur, Isaac and Jay Boyd and Jimmy Lee Grier 
and Jesse William Grier; and three sisters, Eula Mae Baker, Susie Ann Boykin and Queen Ester Poole.

Fred Dale

   (LANETT) The Rev. Fred Dale, 62, of Lanett died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at his residence.
   Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 24, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral 
Home Chapel in Valley with the Revs. J. T. Marks and Eddie Carter officiating.  Burial will follow in 
Johnson Memorial Gardens.
   The Rev. Dale is survived by his wife, Sandra M. Dale; one daughter, Amber Stephens of Lanett; his 
mother-in-law, Nell Morris of Lanett; and two sisters.
   Born Aug. 22, 1941, in Randolph County, the Rev. Dale was a veteran, having served six years in the 
U.S. Air Force.  He was the technical manager at Carter Mill, and also served as the pastor of New 
Venture Baptist Church where he was a member.  He was the son of the late Oscar T. Dale and Susie 
Broach Dale.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to New Venture Baptist Church in his memory.

Derwood Keith Koone

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Derwood Keith Koone, 50, of LaGrange, Ga., died Saturday, March 27, 2004.
   He was born July 10, 1953, in Gastonia, N.C.  Mr. Koone was the son of Frank Koone and the late 
Louise Bowen Estes.  He has lived in LaGrange most of his life.
   In addition to his father, he is survived by his daughter, Wendi Messer of Wadley; his stepfather, Jack 
Estes of LaGrange; his sister, Jackie Coggins; two grandchildren and two nephews.
   Graveside services were at Shadowlawn Cemetery on Tuesday, March 30, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mike 
Reaves officiating.
   Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Anthony Chris Byram

   (NEWNAN, Ga.) Anthony Chris Byram, 51, of Newnan, Ga., died Friday, March 26, 2004.
   He was born March 30, 1952, in Carroll County, Ga., son of the late J.H. Byram.  He served in the U.S. 
Army during the Vietnam War.
   Surviving are his parents, E.C. and Frauline Edge of Newnan; a daughter, Amber Coffey of Marble, 
N.C.; three sons, Kyle Byram of Lakeland, Fla., Dusty Byram of Umatilla, Fla., and Nick Byram of 
Topeka, Kan.; sisters, Rita Gresham of Newnan and Holli Justiss of Alpharetta, Ga.; and a brother, Eric 
Edge of Newnan.
   Services were Sunday, March 28, at 2 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, Newnan, with the Rev. Rick 
Duncan officiating.  Interment was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
   Pallbearers were John Coffey, Dusty Byram, Larry Gresham, Ted Justiss, Mike McDonald, Delmar 
Prowant and Kyle Byram.

Thomas L. Fields Sr.

   (LANETT) Thomas L. Fields Sr., 91, of Lanett died Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Beverly Health Care 
in Lanett.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at Lanett First Christian Church with the 
Revs. Howard Merchant and Donnie Erwin-Brown officiating.  Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.
   Mr. Fields is survived by three daughters, Barbara Adams of Lanett, Billie Jo Edge of Jonesboro, Ga., 
and Brenda Maddux of Kingsport, Tenn.; one son, Tommy Fields Jr. of Valley; 10 grandchildren, 
10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Born July 30, 1912, in Wedowee, Mr. Fields was a retired employee of WestPoint Stevens Lanett Mill.  
He was a member of Lanett First Christian Church and a former member of Lanett Masonic Lodge 
No. 656 F&M.  He was the son of the late Rena Payne Fields and Billy Fields.
   The family respectfully declines the honor of flowers and asks that memorials be made to Lanett First 
Christian Church or to the Alzheimer's Association in his memory.

Antonia Torbert Cullars

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Antonia Rebecca Torbert Cullars, 95, of LaGrange, Ga., died March 25, 2004, 
in LaGrange after an extended illness.
   Mrs. Cullars, a native of Old Spring Hill in Marengo County, was born in Linden, Ala., in 1908.  She 
was the daughter of Maggie Will Wooddy Torbert of Oakbowery (Chambers County) and Alexander 
Torbert of Linden.
   Her mother died in 1909 at an early age, and her father  gave her into the foster care of her aunt and 
uncle, Eva Hunt Wooddy and Louise Massey Wooddy of Gold Hill, who raised her as their child.
   Mrs. Cullars graduated in home economics from Alabama College for Women in Montevallo and began 
teaching at Abbeville.  She married Walter Cullars Jr. of Opelika, and they lived in Roanoke and West 
Point, Ga., before moving to LaGrange in 1945.
   She taught home economics in Randolph County and later taught biology at Troup County High School.  
She was a member of First Baptist Church of LaGrange for over 59 years and was active as Circle Leader 
for the Baptist Missionary Society.
   Survivors include a son, Walter Cullars III of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; a daughter, Dorothy Antonia 
Cullars Waugh of Canton, Ga.; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
   Services were in the chapel of Hunter Allen Myhand Funeral Home, LaGrange, on Monday, with Dr. 
Paul Baxter officiating.  Committal  services were at Rosemere Cemetery, Opelika.  Those desiring may

   Mr. Bailey died Wednesday, March 24, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
   Survivors include five sons, Willie "Amon" Bailey Jr. of Wedowee, Thomas Bailey and Walter Bailey of 
Decatur, Ga., Wesley Bailey of Huntsville and Thomas S. Bailey of Fairburn, Ga.; six daughters, Shirley 
Bailey of Waukegan, Ill., Betty Toney of Jonesboro, Ga., Geraldine Hines of Fairburn and Selema O'Neal, 
Regina Dennison and Jacqueline Bailey, all of Anniston; a brother, John T. Bailey of Los Angeles; two 
sisters, Velvet Graves of Waukegan and Emma Minnefield of Munford; 21 grandchildren and 35 great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.
   Mr. Bailey was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Anniston.  He retired from civil service at 
Fort McClellan.  He was a Mason.  He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Eliza Bailey; a 
brother, Oran Bailey; and two sisters, Dollie Billensley and Clois Bonner.

   Mr. Duke died Sunday, March 28, at Beverly Healthcare in Oxford.

and Kevin Duke; six sisters, Margaret Estes of Cragford, Christine Reaves and Brenda Hill of Lineville, 
Jessie Johnson and Joyce Prater of Heflin, and Betty Ward of Northport; and six grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Dustin Screws, Terry Driscol, Bobby Reaves, Fradis Moore, Jessie Duke, Dale 
Reaves, Bobby Holman and Brian Baldwin.
   Mr. Duke, a Randolph County native, had lived in Calhoun County most of his life.  He was a member 
of Westwood Baptist Church.  He retired from Southern Tool with 22 years service.  He was preceded in 
death by his parents, Oscar and Lena Duke; and two brothers, Quinton Duke and Lynn Duke.

Lelia Mae Heard

   (ROANOKE) Lelia Mae Heard, 84, of Roanoke died Monday, March 29, 2004, at West Georgia 
Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Services will be Thursday, April 1, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Riley Street, Roanoke, with the 
Revs. Gilbert Staples, William Terry, Jeffery Rosser and Robert L. Heflin officiating.  Burial will be in 
East Roanoke Cemetery.
   Survivors include a daughter, Frances Smith of Atlanta; a son, Douglas M. Heard of Newnan, Ga.; nine 
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by two sons, Frank B. Heard and 
Joseph M. Heard Jr.; two sisters, Emma Lou Smith and Annie Kate Smith Digsby; and a brother, Johnny 
Lee Smith.
   Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. 
Wednesday.  The body will be placed in the church one hour before the services.

Dorothy Lee Wilder

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Dorothy Lee Wilder, 67, of Carrollton, Ga., died Saturday, March 27, 2004, 
in a local hospital.
   Mrs. Wilder was born Jan. 24, 1937, in Randolph County to the late Vassar Lee Duffie and Cora Lee 
Nix Duffie.  She was a retired market researcher and a member of Bremen Church of Christ. Besides her 
parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Cantrell.
   Survivors include her husband, Eschol C. Wilder; her children, Sheila Wilder Brabec and Ricky E. 
Wilder of Anchorage, Alaska, and Tim J. Wilder of St. Louis, Mo.; sisters, Ollie Payne of Roanoke and 
Betty Cantrell of Lithia Springs, Ga.; brothers, Johnny Duffie of Roanoke and Harold Duffie of LaFayette; 
six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Services were Tuesday, March 30, at 1 p.m. EST at Bremen Church of Christ, with Minister James 
Rogers and Minister Larry Acuff officiating.  Interment was at 3:30 p.m. EST at Levens Baptist Church 
Cemetery near Wedowee.

   (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Services for Robbie Lynn Cantrell, 45, of Carrollton, Ga., formerly of

   Ms. Cantrell died Wednesday, March 24, at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Ga.
   Survivors include one daughter, Dakota Lee Cantrell of Woodland; one son, Dustin Cantrell of 
Woodland; and three half-sisters, Carrie Faye Jackson of Bowdon, Ga., Polly Hayes of Ranburne and 
Mary Jim Lowery of Ashland.
   A Carroll County native, Ms. Cantrell was born Aug. 6, 1958, daughter of Robert Calvin and Bessie 
Hooten Pitts.  She was a member of Providence Baptist Church and had been employed as an LPN with 
Pathways Mental Health Center.
   Pallbearers were Charles Jackson, Ralph Pitts, Mark McApin, Bruce Lowery, Marty Hall and Earvin 
Traylor.

Trussville; a sister, Jessie Johnson of Eclectic; a brother, Hubert Shaddix of Valley; 12 grandchildren and

Clegg Manufacturing Company.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Brannan Hardy.

   Mrs. Potts died Tuesday, March 23, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.

of Roanoke; a son, Laran Potts of Wadley; one sister, Gertrude Gray of Huguley; and three grandchildren.

   A lifelong Roanoke resident, Mrs. Potts was born May 11, 1934, daughter of Jack and Bernice Brown

at 11 a.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Morris officiating.  Burial was in Maple Grove 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Russell died Monday, March 22, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
   Survivors include four daughters, Judy Lambert and Sandra Dee Wagoner of Ohatchee, Brenda Butler 
Jones of Fort Payne and Bonnie Heafner of Huntsville; 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 
several great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Mrs. Russell, a Randolph County native and longtime Calhoun County resident, was Baptist.  She was 
a homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Earl Russell and Nelson Butler; three 
daughters, Gaynell Grubb, Marie Haynes and Carol Jean Butler; and a son, Carl Earl Butler.

Jack Blankenship

   (LINEVILLE) Graveside services for Jack Blankenship, 61, of Lineville were Monday, March 29, 2004, 
at 11 a.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery in Coosa County with the Rev. James Duke officiating.
   Mr. Blankenship died Friday, March 26, at his residence.
   Survivors include his wife, Wanda B. Blankenship of Lineville; a daughter, Pamela Blankenship of 
Lineville; a son, Jack Edward Blankenship of Wedowee; two step-daughters, Mary Lynn Drake and 
Sherry Ann Lowe, both of Gadsden; two step-sons, Leon K. Bell Jr. of Lineville and Robert James Bell of 
Texas; six brothers, Thomas Blankenship of Houston, Charles Blankenship of Charlotte, N.C., Hue 
Blankenship of Vancleve, Miss., Lewis Blankenship of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, James Blankenship of 
Barnheart, Mo. and Winston Blankenship of Shreveport, La.; 12 grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.
   Mr. Blankenship was a native of Coosa County, where he lived most of his life, but lived in Clay County 
for the past 15 years.  He served in the Army National Guard and the Navy.  He was a truck driver with 
Kirby Elder Trucking and was formerly employed by Wellborn Cabinet.  He was a Baptist.  He was 
preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Wanda L. Bell, and three brothers, George King Blankenship, Bill 
Blankenship Jr. and John Blankenship.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Lineville.

Ann Joyce Pike Bowman

   (LIBERTY, N.C.) Ann Joyce Pike Bowman, 72, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, in Atlanta.   Services 
were Thursday, March 25, at Pleasant Union United Methodist Church in Liberty, N.C.  Interment was in 
the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Bowman was born in Rock Mills on Dec. 9, 1931, to the late Vesta Lipham Pike and Andrew 
Jackson Pike.  She was employed at Sears for 17 years and Fran's Front Porch for 12 years, and she was a 
homemaker.  Mrs. Bowman was preceded in death by brothers, John Emory Pike of Springfield, Tenn., 
and William James Pike of Franklin, Ga., and a half-sister Virginia Pike Houze of Roanoke.
   Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Bryan Bowman; a daughter, Tempie Ann Bowman of Mountain 
City, Tenn.; her twin sister, Julia Pike Koon of Douglasville, Ga.; a grandson and several nieces and 
nephews.

Geraldine Tipton Barker

   (GOLDEN SPRINGS) Geraldine Tipton Barker, 76, of Golden Springs died Monday, March 29, 2004 
at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital, Anniston.
   Graveside services will be Thursday, April 1, at 1 p.m. at Forestlawn Gardens, Anniston, with the Rev. 
Russell Vaughn officiating.  The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown & 
Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston.
   Survivors include a daughter, Diane Barker Krieger of Jonesboro, Ga.; a son, John Barker of Oxford; 
a brother, John Tipton of California; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Barker was a native and lifelong resident of Alabama.  She lived in both Calhoun and Randolph 
counties.  She was a resident of NHC Nursing Home and of the Baptist faith.  Mrs. Barker was preceded 
in death by her husband, Asa Paskell Barker; two brothers, James Tipton and William Tipton; a son, 
David Jeffrey Barker; and a grandson, Joshua Allan Krieger.
   Arrangements were by Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston.
