Harry Richard Murphy, Sr., former county commissioner

   (NEWELL) Former Randolph County commissioner Harry Richard Murphy, Sr., 70, of Rt. 1, Newell, 
died Saturday, May 29, 1993, at his residence after an extended illness.
   Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Jordan's Chapel Church, with Rev. 
Hurston Smith and Rev. Leron Murphy officiating.
   Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Mae Murphy of Newell; one daughter, Ms. Angela 
Murphy of Newell; one son, Richard Murphy of Newell; two sisters, Mrs. Fairy Haynes of Webb, 
Ala., and Mrs. Patsy Braden of Oxford; and two brothers, Conrad Murphy of Scottsboro and Henry 
Murphy of Marietta, Ga.
   Mr. Murphy served as commissioner of Randolph County's District Two for 16 years. He was a 
native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, a veteran of World War II, and a member of 
Ridgecrest Baptist Church of Montgomery, Sawyer Lodge No. 93, F&AM and the American Legion.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Claudette Johnson

   (HEFLIN) Claudette Johnson, 45, of Rt. 1, Heflin, died Sunday, May 30, 1993, at her residence 
after a short illness.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Pinetucky Baptist Church, with Rev. 
Horace Merrill officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Johnson is survived by her husband, Douglas Johnson of Heflin; two daughters, Mrs. Kay 
Yancey and Miss Pamela Johnson of Heflin; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Hurst of Anniston, and Mrs. 
Stella Triplett and Mrs. Janice Ayres of Heflin; four brothers, John Bain and Charley Ray Bain 
of Heflin, Horace Bain of Atlanta, and Jerry Bain of Oxford; and one grandchild.
   Pallbearers were Phillip Wortham, Barry Johnson, Jimmy Bain, Anthony Bain, Billy Ayres and 
Donald Triplett.
   Mrs. Johnson was a native of Calhoun County, who lived most of her life in Randolph County. 
She was a supervisor for Sewell Manufacturing Company of Heflin.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of arrangements.

Della Trammell

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Della Trammell, 82, of Roanoke were Saturday, May 29, 1993, 
at 2 p.m. from New Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in LaFayette, with Rev. W. H. Trammell 
officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Trammell died Wednesday, May 26, at Dadeville Convalescence Home, Dadeville.
   Mrs. Trammell was born May 14, 1911. She was married to the late Adolphus Trammell and a 
member of New Harmony Baptist Church.
   She is survived by three step-sons, Lawson Adolphus Jr., William Leonard and Odell Trammell 
of Roanoke; three step-daughters, Ms. Lena Mae Trammell of Roanoke, Ms. Dora Hildreth and Ms. 
Bernice Tramell [sic] of Elyria, Ohio; and one grandson, Roy Lee Tate of Roanoke.

Josephine Molden McGahee

   (Gary, Ind.) Funeral services for Josephine Molden McGahee, 46, of Gary, Ind., were Sunday, 
May 30, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Canaan Baptist Church in Wedowee, with Rev. Otis Wilson officiating. 
Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. McGahee died Tuesday, May 25, at Methodist Hospital in Gary.
   A native of Wedowee, Mrs. McGahee was born June 29, 1946, to John Tom and Vera Molden. She was 
preceded in death by her father and her brother, William Roy Molden. She was a member of Canaan 
Baptist Church and, after moving to Gary in 1968, a member of New Tabernacle Baptist Church.
   She is survived by two daughters, Ms. Patricia A. Hollis and Ms. Georgenia H. Heard of Gary; 
her mother, Mrs. Vera Molden of Wedowee; four brothers, John L. Rhonnie of Detroit, Mich., James 
Eldora, Bennie Ray Molden and Frank Molden of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Sims Grady of 
Gary, Ind., and Mrs. Betty Lancaster of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
   Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Horace Jennings

   (SYLACAUGA) Rev. Horace Jennings, 69, of Sylacauga died Monday, May 31, 1993, at Coosa Valley 
Medical Center, Sylacauga.
   Funeral services were held from St. Thomas United Methodist Church, Sylacauga, on Wednesday, 
June 2, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Burl Oliver officiating. Interment was in Mt. Carmel United 
Methodist Church cemetery in Woodland.
   Rev. Jennings was a member of St. Thomas United Methodist Church, Sylacauga. He was also 
pastor of St. Thomas United Methodist Church and pastor of Shady Grove United Methodist Church 
in Hanover. He was a member of the North Alabama United Methodist Conference and a veteran of 
World War II.
   Rev. Jennings is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marjorie L. Jennings of Sylacauga; one daughter, 
Ms. Freda Miller of Sylacauga; one adopted daughter, Ms. Ethel L. Green of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 
two grandchildren, Monique Miller and Cheryl Miller of Sylacauga; three brothers, Oris Jennings, 
Rev. Noble O. Jennings and Alvertus Jennings of Chattanooga.

Alyissa Nicole Fisher, infant

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Alyissa Nicole Fisher, 11 months, of Roanoke were at 3 p.m. 
Thursday, May 27, 1993, from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Revs. Bill Calhoun and Terry Hill 
officiating. Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   She died Tuesday, May 25, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
   Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Fisher of Roanoke; grandparents, Kitty and 
Bovine Fisher and Freddy and Melissa Windsor, all of Roanoke; great-grandmothers, Mrs. Velma 
Fisher and Mrs. Julia Parrish, both of Roanoke; a sister, Danielle Oliver of Roanoke; and 
several aunts and uncles.
   Pallbearers were Stanley Cofield, Jody Driver, Jamie Anderson and Jimmy Weathers.

Delmas Lynn Reed

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Delmas Lynn Reed, 82, of Route 1, Wadley, were Saturday, 
May 29, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. James Duke officiating. 
Burial was at Wadley Cemetery.
   Mr. Reed died Friday, May 28, at Clay County Hospital in Ashland.
   A former resident of Tarrant City, Mr. Reed was born in Jefferson County Oct. 19, 1910, 
son of Robert and Minnie Lovelady Reed. He served in the army during World War II and had 
retired from Transco, where he worked in pipeline communications. Mr. Reed was a member of 
Abanda Methodist Church, the Shriners and the Masons.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bernyce Edna Cox Reed of Wadley; a daughter, Mrs. Gail 
Harris of Abanda; three grandsons, Mike Coker, Lynn Coker and Randy Coker; a sister, Mrs. 
Georgina Weems of Quinton, Ala.; two brothers, Lesley Reed of Quinton and Lester Reed of 
Charlotte, N.C.; and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be [sic  were] Junior Huey, Bobby Barton, Pierce Stewart, Hugh Radney, 
Edward Allen and Jerry Hall.

Major Emory Cantrell, Sr.

   (ROANOKE) Major Emory Cantrell Sr., 89, of Route 3, Roanoke died Sunday, May 30, 1993, at his 
residence after an extended illness.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Highway First Congregational Methodist 
Church, with Rev. Vernon Willis and Rev. Wayne Jetton officiating. Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mr. Cantrell is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Tempie Mitchell of Roanoke and Mrs. Winnette 
Kimball of Carrollton, Ga.; five sons, Morgan Cantrell of Roanoke, Jim Cantrell of Opelika, 
James Kersey Cantrell of Valley, Major Cantrell Jr. of Woodland and Donnie Cantrell of 
Carrollton; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Wood of Roanoke; 30 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Teddy Joe Cantrell, Trey E. Cantrell, Greg Cantrell, Danny Cantrell, Mark 
Cantrell and Lance Cantrell.
   Mr. Cantrell was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, a farmer and a member of 
Highway First Congregational Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie 
Fincher Cantrell, and two sons, Burnze Cantrell, William T. Sock Cantrell and one daughter, 
Maggie Veal.

Audrey G. Lindley

   (WEDOWEE) Audrey G. Lindley, 70, of Wedowee died Saturday, May 29, 1993, in Clay County 
Hospital, Ashland, after an extended illness.
   Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Monday, May 31, at First United Methodist Church of Wedowee, 
with Dr. Harris Hand and Rev. Billy Todd Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Liberty Church of 
Christ Cemetery.
   Mrs. Lindley is survived by her husband, J. Cecil J.C. Lindley of Wedowee; one son, Don 
Lindley of Oxford; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Holloway of Moody, Ala., and Mrs. Molene Martin of 
Birmingham; and three grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jeff Whitt, Tim Whitt, Gary Cockrell, Rodney Cofield, Lonnie Lindley and 
Dr. Jerry Kitchens.
   Mrs. Lindley was a native of Marshall County. She had lived in Randolph County for the past 
11 years. She was an accountant with Anniston City Schools and later with the State Department 
of Education in Montgomery. She taught Sunday school at Wesley Chapel Church and was a member of 
Wedowee First United Methodist Church.
   The family requests that donations be made to Wedowee First United Methodist Church, Wesley 
Chapel Christian Church on [sic  or] the Arthritis Foundation.

Katie Bell Morris Smith

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Katie Bell Morris Smith, 92, of Wedowee were Saturday, May 29, 
1993, at 2 p.m. from Shiloh Baptist Church in Wedowee, with Rev. Floyd Woods officiating. 
Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Smith died Tuesday, May 25, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
   A native of the Shiloh community of Randolph County, Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 7, 1901, to 
Pump and Rosezatta Crawley Morris. Her husband, Charlie Lee Smith, and two sons, James Bailey 
and Howard Smith, preceded her in death.
   She is survived by five sons, Harmon Bailey and Nisda Smith of Wedowee, Horace Bailey of 
Alexander City, Bill Smith of Atlanta, Ga., and Nathan Smith of Union City, Ga.; six daughters, 
Mrs. Mae Liz Bailey of Opelika, Mrs. Annie Mae Denny, Mrs. Lessie Williams, Mrs. Essie M. 
McLemore and Mrs. Nell Phillips of Carrollton, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Betsy White of LaGrange, 
Ga.; one brother, John Marsh of Oklahoma City, Tex.; 60 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; 
a host of great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Pervis S. Gunn

   (WEST POINT, Ga.) Pervis S. Gunn, 78, of West Point, Ga., died Tuesday, May 25, 1993, at his 
residence.
   Services were Wednesday, May 26, at 3 p.m. at Lanett First Baptist Church will [sic  with] 
Rev. Gene Webb officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lanett.
   A native of Randolph County, Mr. Gunn was born Oct. 30, 1914, to the late Quarn and Sally Cook 
Gunn. He was a retired employee of the West Point Pepperell Service Center in Valley with 40 
years of service. He had also worked at West Point Foundry & Machine Co. for three years. He was 
an active member of Lanett First Baptist Church and Lanett Kiwanis Club. Mr. Gunn was an avid 
gardener.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vernice Camp Gunn of West Point; two daughters, Mrs. Judy 
Colley of Lanett and Ms. Dawn Marrin of Berwyn, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Tidwell and Mrs. 
Maxine Brumbeloe of Roanoke; two brothers, Earl Gunn of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ralph Gunn of 
Roanoke; and one grandchild.
   The family respectfully declines the gift of flowers and asks that memorials be made to 
Chattahoochee Hospice, Valley, or Lanett First Baptist Church.

Frank Nicholas Earle

   (FIVE POINTS) Funeral services for Frank Nicholas Earle, 86, of Five Points, were Friday, 
May 28, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel in Roanoke with Rev. Herbert Howard 
officiating. Burial was at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Lanett.
   Mr. Earle died Wednesday, May 26, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
   A Chambers County native, he was born Feb. 15, 1907, son of Brunner and Irene Sharp Earle. 
He was Baptist by faith and was retired from West Point Pepperell.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Sara Mitchum Earle of Five Points; two sons, Billy Wayne 
Earle of Five Points and John Frank Earle of Morrow, Ga.; four sisters, Mrs. Laverne McCollough 
of Lanett, Mrs. Catheline Stephens of Anniston, and Mrs. Christine Hines and Mrs. Annie Swan of 
Valley; three brothers, Shaffield Earle of Clacksville, Lenard Earle of LaGrange, Ga., and Bill 
Earle of Valley; and two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Chris Mitchum, Allen Mitchum, Tim Earl, Joey Earl, Edward Allen and Aaron 
Haynes.

Willie B. James (Wadley councilman)

   (WADLEY) Wadley Town Council member Willie B. James, 79, of Wadley died early Thursday 
morning, June 3, 1993.
   Funeral services for Mr. James were Monday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist 
Church, with Rev. Cornelius Reese officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
   Mr. James was born Dec. 3, 1915, in Chambers County, son of the late Mrs. Vera Mae James. 
He was a retired railroad employee who was elected to the Wadley Town Council in 1988 and served 
until his death. He joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at an early age and served as chairman 
of the church's deacons board.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruthes James of Wadley; two daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Boykin 
of Lakewood, Calif., and Mrs. Joyce Green of Carson, Calif.; two sons, Willie James and Michael 
James of Wadley; three brothers, Cleophas James, R. Z. James and Sylvester James, all of Detroit, 
Mich.; and 22 grandchildren.
   Active pallbearers were Mr. James's grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers were the 
deacons of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Winfred Virgil Houze

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Winfred Virgil Houze, 78, of Route 2, Roanoke, were Tuesday, 
June 8, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Stoney Halsey officiating. 
Burial was at Forest Home Christian Church cemetery.
   Mr. Houze died Sunday, June 6, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   Mrs. Houze was born July 16, 1914, in Cullman, son of Louis Harvey and Mattie Delia Anderson 
Houze. He served in the navy during WWII, was a retired cattle farmer and a member of Forest Home 
Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Eric Michael Houze.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Virginia L. Pike Houze of Roanoke; a daughter, Mrs. Gloria 
Houze Cown of Cummings, Ga.; a son, Larry Winfred Houze of Roanoke; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Houze 
Weathers of LaGrange; a brother, Billy R. Houze of Newnan, Ga.; five grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were William Bennett, Jimmy Koon, Roger Arnett, Ronnie Crockett, Ralph Guinn and 
W. G. Weathers.

Jimmie Stitt Weathers McClendon

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Jimmie Stitt Weathers McClendon, 74, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
June 5, 1993, at 3 p.m. from Springfield Baptist Church with Revs. Lendon Fields and Bill Seay 
officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. McClendon died Thursday, June 3, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   She was born in Randolph County on July 17, 1918, daughter of Grover Cleveland and Shannon 
Stitt Weathers. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church and Eastern Star Chapter 458 of 
Roanoke. Mrs. McClendon had operated a day care center. She was preceded in death by her husband, 
O. D. McClendon, and a son, Emmett Veal.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dee Tyson of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Sudduth of 
Roanoke and Mrs. Grace Howard of Macon, Ga.; two brothers, M. B. Weathers of Roanoke and Grover 
Weathers Jr. of LaGrange; one grandchild and one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were great-nephews of Mrs. McClendon. Members of the Order of the Eastern Star 
served as honorary pallbearers.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dennie W. Holloway

   (WEDOWEE) Dennie W. Holloway, 82, of Rt. 2, Wedowee, died Tuesday, June 8, 1993, at her 
residence after an extended illness.
   Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 10, at West Broad Street Church of 
Christ, Wedowee, with Harry Cobb and Sonny Reggins officiating. Burial will follow in the Wedowee 
City cemetery.
   Mrs. Holloway is survived by her husband, W. D. Holloway of Wedowee; two sons, Harold Holloway 
of Wedowee and Bobby Holloway of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Nellie White of Wedowee; 
three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be nephews.
   Mrs. Holloway was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was preceded in death 
by one son, Ray Holloway. She was a homemaker and had worked in textile for a number of years.
   Mrs. Holloway will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, after 2 p.m., Wednesday, 
June 9, until one hour prior to funeral services. She will lie in state at the church for one 
hour.

   (ROANOKE) Lucille H. Gates, 78, of Roanoke died Thursday evening, June 3, 1993, at Randolph 
County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services for Miss Gates were Monday, June 7, at 2:30 p.m. from First Baptist Church, 
Riley Street, Roanoke, with Rev. Lathonia J. Wright, pastor, officiating. Burial was in East 
Roanoke Cemetery.
   Survivors include one nephew, Jeffery Rivers of Newark, Del.; one niece, Brenda Rivers of 
Miami, Fla.; four cousins, Mrs. Jimmie L. Heard, Mrs. Grace Ferrell, Mrs. Fannie Mae Moody and 
Mrs. Dessie Tucker, all of Roanoke; and 10 cousins from the Thornton descendants who live in 
LaGrange, Cleveland, Ohio, Washington, D.C., and Detroit, Mich.

Cora Nell Vinson

   (MONTGOMERY) Funeral services for Cora Nell Vinson, 71, of Montgomery were Saturday, June 5, 
1993, at 10 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Douglas Turner officiating. Burial was 
at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Miss Vinson died Thursday, June 3, at Baptist Medical Center in Montgomery.
   She was born in Roanoke on Sept. 14, 1921, daughter of Charlie Henry and Mabel Ruth Jones 
Vinson. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Montgomery, where she lived for the past 
45 years.
   Miss Vinson is survived by her brother, Charles Vinson Jr. of Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were Thomas McMurray, Jim Bo Robinson, George Robinson, Todd Vinson, Billy Langley 
and Randy Adamson.

   She is survived by her parents, Tommy Mize and Vickie Cook Mize of Wedowee; two brothers, 
Kirk and Kraig Mize of Wedowee; and paternal grandmother, Annie Lou Mize of Heflin.

Willie Lee Anglin

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Miss Willie Lee Anglin, 91, of Roanoke were held Friday, 
June 11, 1993, at 11 a.m. from Cedarwood Cemetery, with Rev. Milton Booth officiating.
   Miss Anglin died Wednesday, June 9, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   Miss Anglin was born Sept. 28, 1901, in Chambers County, daughter of George Thomas and 
Emma Muldrew Anglin. She had worked as a sales clerk and was a member of Roanoke First United 
Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mrs. Doris McMurray 
and Mrs. Bessie Pittman.
   Survivors include five nieces and nephews, Mrs. Jane Edwards of Roanoke, Mrs. Ann Massey and 
Mrs. Sissy Logan of Birmingham, Mrs. Jean Cauthen of Athens, and Bill McMurray of Fairhope; and 
several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Lillie Jefferson Lanier Noles

   (GRAHAM) Lillie Jefferson Lanier Noles, 85, of Route 1, Graham, died Wednesday, June 9, 1993, 
in Bowdon Area Hospital.
   She was born in Carroll County, Ga., Dec. 3, 1907, the daughter of the late Samson and Patsy 
Bentley Lanier. Mrs. Noles was a lifelong resident of this area, a homemaker and a member of

   Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Noles of Carrollton, Ga., and Steve Noles of Graham; two 
daughters, Mrs. Mavis Ledbetter of Bremen, Ga., and Mrs. Louise Cofield of Graham; four 
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Cora Bailey of LaGrange, Ga., 
Mrs. Ida Thomas of Marietta, Ga., and Mrs. Ozella Lovvorn of Bowdon.
   Funeral services were Friday, June 11, at 3 p.m. EDT from Campground Methodist Church, with 
Rev. Cal Ledbetter and Rev. W. M. Wiggins officiating. Music was furnished by Virginia Kilgore. 
Interment services followed in the church cemetery, with Rev. Ellis Kennedy in charge of 
graveside services.

   (ROANOKE) Lula Mae Dozier Sanders, 82, of Roanoke, died June 5, 1993 at Randolph County 
Hospital.
   Mrs. Sanders was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Roanoke.
   Survivors include nephews Bobby Dozier, Leroy Dozier and John Will Dozier, all of Roanoke.
   Services for Mrs. Sanders were Wednesday, June 9, at 1 p.m. from Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 
with Rev. R. L. Heflin and Rev. L. B. Houston officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

   (FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) Ruth Wilson Nelms, 74, of Fayetteville, N.C., died Thursday, 
June 10, 1993.

with Rev. Robert Polk officiating. Burial followed at Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville.
   Mrs. Nelms was a native of Wedowee.
   She is survived by her husband, Malcolm (Don) Nelms of Fayetteville; two daughters, 
Mrs. Donna Nelms Deluca of Woodstock, N.Y., and Mrs. Delina Nelms Sullivan of Fayetteville; and 
one brother, G. V. Wilson of Belton, Tex.

   (LANETT) Graveside services for Thomas Henry Spears, 84, of Lanett were held Wednesday,

   Mr. Spears died Tuesday, June 8 at Goodwater Nursing Home.
   A former resident of Woodland, Mr. Spears was born Mar. 6, 1909, son of Thomas and Evie Shaw 
Spears. He was a farmer and a member of Zion Baptist Church. His wife, Elvie Sikes Spears, 
preceded him in death.
   Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Madden of Woodland and Mrs. Lera Keeble of Fairfax; 
a brother, Charlie Spears of Tuscaloosa; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Jim Benefield Woody

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jim Benefield Woody, 69, of Roanoke, Route 4, were 
Thursday, June 17, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Bethel Baptist Church, with Revs. Vernon Brown and Hugh 
Vines officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Woody died Tuesday, June 15, 1993, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Woody was born Feb. 11, 1924, daughter of John David and 
Elsie Pool Benefield. She was a housewife and a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the WMU.
   Survivors include her husband, Bryce Wilfred Woody of Roanoke; four sons, David Woody of 
LaGrange, Ga., Larry Woody of Roanoke, Tom Perry of Birmingham and Dr. Benny Woody of Franklin, 
Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Mae Green and Mrs. Myrtice Phillips of Roanoke and Mrs. Minnie 
Lee Tarver of Five Points; a brother, John Chief Benefield of Roanoke; and nine grandchildren 
and four great-grandchildren.
   Grandsons of Mrs. Woody served as pallbearers.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Betty Joyce Anglin, 54, of Roanoke, formerly of Rock Mills,

   Mrs. Anglin was born July 18, 1938, in Troup County, Ga., daughter of Robert Edward and Lera 
Opel Lester Hall. She had worked with Avondale Mills and was preceded in death by her husband, 
Charlie Anward Anglin.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Shelia Arrington of LaGrange, Ga., and Mrs. Rhonda Koone 
of Franklin, Ga.; her mother, Mrs. Opel Evans of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Patsy Wade of Five 
Points and Mrs. Linda Conner of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two brothers, Harold Hall of Roanoke and 
Jimmy Hall of Mobile; and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Bobby Koone, Shannon Olvey, Terry Wade, Terry Powell, Ronnie Anglin and 
Jimmy Boggus.

Jimmie Ann Walker

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Jimmie Ann Walker, 97, of Roanoke, were Monday, June 14, 1993, 
at 11 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Danny Sumerlin officiating. Burial was at 
Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Walker died Saturday, June 12, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Walker was born Oct. 10, 1895, in Wedowee, 
daughter of James Lawrence and Biddie Abbott Norton. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church 
and the Eastern Star. Mrs. Walker had worked as a weaver with Handley Mills. Her husband, 
Clifford Vaughn Walker, preceded her in death.
   Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Crawford Clift Haynes

   (WOODLAND) Crawford Clift Haynes, 85, well-known Randolph County educator and lifelong 
community and civic leader, died Sunday, June 20, 1993, at his home in Woodland after an extended 
illness.
   A member of one of the county's pioneer families, Mr. Haynes was born in Graham on Sept. 25, 
1907, the oldest child of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Crawford Haynes. Two brothers, Julian Baxter and 
William Gordon, and a sister, Anna Elizabeth, preceded him in death.
   Crawford Haynes was a graduate of Bowdon College and Auburn University, and was a teacher in 
the Randolph County school system for 41 years. He started his career as a teacher at Bethel 
School in 1927 and later taught at the Friendship and Graham schools. He served as principal of 
Swagg School and Wedowee Grammar School before moving to Woodland High School as principal in 
1939. After his retirement in 1968, he pursued varied interests, including farming and raising 
cattle.
   As a young man, Mr. Haynes was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church at Graham. He was a member of 
Zion Baptist Church at Woodland during his last 54 years, many of which he spent as a Sunday 
school teacher. He was also a member of the Randolph County Historical Society.
   Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mrs. Gulema Harrod Haynes; five children, Lenda 
Haynes McCain of Panama City, Fla., Eloise Haynes Rice of Anniston, Ralph Crawford Haynes of 
Atlanta, Ga., Roberta Haynes Paul of Birmingham and Rosalie Haynes of Washington, Ga.; 
12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and two nephews.
   Funeral services for Mr. Haynes were at 2 p.m. Monday, June 21, at Zion Baptist Church in 
Woodland, with the Rev. Roger Woodard officiating. Interment was in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.
   Pallbearers were grandsons, Allen Haynes McCain, Charles Rice, Alan Rice, Tracey Rice, Jordan 
Haynes, Bradford Haynes, Terrel Paul and James Paul.

   (WOODLAND) J. B. Shaw, 75, of Rt. 1, Woodland, died Monday, June 21, 1993, in Wedowee Hospital 
after an extended illness.
   Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, with Bro. Calvin Prince officiating. 
Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery [no church listed for the service/interment].
   Mr. Shaw is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Janice Madden of Woodland; one son, Master Sgt. 
William C. Shaw of Ft. Belvoir, Va.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three step-sons; 
four step-granddaughters; two sisters, Mrs. Brooksie Williams of Newell and Mrs. Eulette Seegar 
of Wedowee; and one brother, R. T. Shaw of Macon, Ga.
   Pallbearers will be Winfred Shelnutt, Barry Nelson, Scott Reynolds, Jim Waters, Mike Llewellyn 
and Shane Burnett.
   Mr. Shaw was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was retired as a heavy 
equipment operator.

Leon Denson Royston

   (ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.) Leon Denson Royston, 87, of Albuquerque, N.M., died Saturday, June 19, 
1993, at his home.
   Mr. Royston, a native of Roanoke, Ala., was a 1929 graduate of the University of Alabama, 
a former superintendent of Walker County schools in Alabama, former owner of Royston Furniture 
Co., in Moulton, Ala., and a veteran of World War II.
   Survivors include one son, Denny Royston, Jr., and one grandson, Kendrick Royston of Paradise, 
Calif.
   Graveside services for Mr. Royston will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at Antioch 
Congregational Christian Church.
   Arrangements are by Ridout's Brown-Service/Gardendale Chapel in Alabama.

   Mr. Purdy died Sunday, June 20, at his home.

   (WADLEY) Patrick Wayne Johnson, 18, of Wadley died Saturday, June 12, 1993, at his residence.
   Mr. Johnson was a student at Randolph County High School and a player on the football team.
   Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Searcy of Wedowee and Mr. and Mrs. James 
Johnson Jr. of Dayton, Ohio; four sisters, Ms. Juanita Johnson, Ms. Christina Johnson, 
Ms. Elizabeth Johnson and Ms. Mary Johnson, all of Wadley; two brothers, James A. and Randy 
Johnson of Wadley; a special grandmother, Mrs. Mary L. Houston of Wedowee; and a fiance, 
Ms. Tiffany Knight.
   Services for Mr. Johnson were Thursday, June 17, at 2 p.m. from Bethlehem Primitive Baptist 
Church, with Elder Thomas Knight officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Pallbearers were members of the Randolph County High football team. Honorary pallbearers were 
Kelvin O'Neal, Jonathan O'Neal, Richard Hughley, Derrick Potter and Bryant Will.

Tommie Alanson Boone

   (ROANOKE) Tommie Alanson Boone, 84, of Roanoke, formerly of Gadsden, died Tuesday, June 22, 
1993, in Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 24, at Midway United Methodist Church, with 
Rev. Clay Manley and Rev. Cloyse Johnson officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Boone is survived by her husband, H. Carlos Boone of Roanoke; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Lee 
of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Dobson Thornton of Roanoke; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were her nephews.
   Mrs. Boone was a native of Randolph County. She had lived in Gadsden for a number of years and 
moved back to Randolph County one year ago.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for John Tom Breed, 72, of Roanoke were held Wednesday, June 23, 
1993, at 2 p.m. from North Main Congregational Christian Church, with Rev. Ralph Worley 
officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Breed died Tuesday, June 22, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A long-time resident of Roanoke, Mr. Breed was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Chambers County, son of 
Fountain B. and Cartie J. McCollough Breed. He was a veteran of WWII and a member of North Main 
Congregational Christian Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eris Maxine Bailey Breed; two sons, Timothy Michael Breed of 
Roanoke and John Tom Breed Jr. of Montgomery; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Teresa Webb of Roanoke, 
Mrs. Ruby Hill of Lanett and Mrs. Robbie Faulkner of Smiths; a brother, R. W. Breed of Roanoke; 
and four grandchildren.

Hulit Higgins Jenkins

   (ELMORE) Graveside services for Hulit Higgins Jenkins of Elmore were Tuesday, June 22, 1993, 
at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke. Mrs. Jenkins died Sunday, June 20, in Elmore.
   A Lowndesboro native, she was a longtime resident of Roanoke, where she was a teacher in the 
Roanoke City Schools system. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke.
   Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Harriet Jenkins Landrum of Wetumpka; a son, Dr. James 
Mallory Jenkins Jr. of Auburn; and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Shelby H. Baker, Riley P. Green III, William Benjamin Holmes, James Mallory 
Jenkins III, Dr. James P. Michalets and Wesley Schuessler.

Pauline Hinton Reynolds

   (DANVILLE, Va.) Pauline Hinton Reynolds, 77, of Danville, Va., died in University of Alabama 
Hospital in Birmingham on Saturday, June 26, 1993. She had been on a visit to see her daughter 
when she became ill.
   She was born of Oct. 9, 1915, in Semora, N.C., daughter of the late William E. Hinton and 
Sadie Elizabeth Jones Hinton. She had lived most of her life in Danville and was retired from 
Dan River Inc. She was a member of the Third Avenue Christian Church and the Dan River Retired 
Workers Club.
   She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jean Bailey of Wadley, Ala.; a son, Roger Whaley of 
Danville; a brother, Claude S. Hinton of Danville; and eight grandchildren and eight great-
grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday morning, June 30, at 11 o'clock from Swicegood Funeral 
Chapel, conducted by Rev. Freddy Vicks. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Lowe Ray Harmon, 57, of Roanoke, Route 2, were Sunday, June 27,

   Mr. Harmon died Friday, June 25, at his residence.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Harmon was born Apr. 7, 1936, son of Gordon and 
Elsie White Harmon. He worked as a self-employed timber producer.
   Survivors include his companion, Ms. Hazel Sprayberry; three daughters, Mrs. Tammie Horne of 
Roanoke, Mrs. Carol Thompson of Wedowee and Ms. Frances Harmon of Roanoke; two sons, Billy Ray 
Harmon of Carrollton, Ga., and Roger Harmon of Valley; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Peggy Fitzgerald 
of Roanoke, Mrs. Mary Smith of Rock Mills, Mrs. Shirley Clark of Valley and Mrs. Lucy Harmon of 
Rock Mills [only four listed]; four stepsons, Bobby Sprayberry and Andy Sprayberry of Roanoke, 
Ray Sprayberry of Woodland, and Charles Sprayberry of Rock Mills; two sisters, Mrs. Gaither 
Coefield of Woodland and Mrs. Eva Waldrep of Roanoke; three brothers, Carlton Harmon of Heflin 
and Marlton Harmon and Truman Harmon, both of Roanoke; and 15 grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Shane Smith, Charles Sprayberry, Pat Waldrep, Terry Harmon, Alto Thompson and 
Calvin McKee.

Calvin Carlos Brown

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Calvin Carlos Brown, 70, of Roanoke were Saturday, June 26,

   Mr. Brown died Wednesday, June 23, at the V.A. Hospital in Tuskegee.
   A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Brown was born Feb. 2, 1923, son of 
W. C. and Callie Holloway Brown. He served in the Army during WWII, had worked with Handley Mills, 
and was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church, the American Legion and VFW.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Reba Sanders of Valley; a son, Danny Brown of Milledgeville, 
Ga.; three sisters, Mrs. Verna Hurley and Mrs. Myrtis Mitchell of Roanoke and Mrs. Mora Washburn 
of Valley; two grandsons, Allen Sanders of Valley and Russell Brown of Milledgeville; and several 
nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gwendolyn Williams of Roanoke; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, 
Mrs. Ione Harman of Pensacola, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Elaine Watson of Brewton, Fla., and 
Mrs. Mildred Odell of Arizona; and two brothers, Walter Harman and Eskar Harman, both of Milton, 
Fla.
   Pallbearers were Robert Yates, Horace Holliday, W. C. Pate, Rayford Edmondson, Jerry McLemore, 
Asa B. Williams, Fred Pollard and Delmer Green.
   Mr. Harman was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was retired from textile 
work and a [sic] was a veteran of World War II.
   The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Chattahoochee Hospice 
Center.
