OBITUARIES:

Wallace Roberts

 (ROANOKE) Services for the Rev. Wallace Roberts, 93, of Roanoke were
Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.
Don Quick, Dr. Fred Bassett and Michael Bassett officiating. Burial was at Rock
Stand Congregational Christian Church Cemetery.
 Rev. Roberts died Thursday, Oct. 30, at West Georgia Medical Center in
LaGrange.
 Survivors include his wife, Jackie Roberts of Roanoke; two daughters, Peggy
Bassett of Hilton Head, S.C., and Myra Hill of New Port Richey, Fla.; five
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Jonathan Bassett, Michael Kloepfer, Leigh Ann Whiteside,
Kecia Lee, Lynn Tolbert and Josh Kleopfer. Honorary pallbearers were Travis
Moon, Jimmy Kirby, Fred Bailey, J. T. Edge, Ralph Knight, George Bassett, Donald
Bassett, Charles Maddux, Theron Roberts, Bill Kirby, Terry Graham, Roger Green,
Bill Green and Ginber Kloepfer.
 A Clay County native, Rev. Roberts was born Oct. 7, 1910, son of William
Wallace and Emma Hallman Roberts. He we [was] a retired minister having
pastored at Beulah, Rock Stand, Antioch, Forest Home, Cavers Grove, Corinth and
Rock Springs Congregational Christian Churches. He was preceded in death by his
first wife, Vennie Lee Roberts.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Robert Haynes Williams

 (ROANOKE) Services for Robert Haynes Williams, 75, of Roanoke were Saturday,
Nov. 1, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim
Whaley and the Rev. Juan Zarate officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
 Mr. Williams died Thursday, Oct. 30, at Randolph Medical Center.
 Survivors include three sons, Felix Weathers of Cabot, Ark., and James
Weathers and Paul Williams of Roanoke; one sister, Flonnie Robinson of Roanoke,
one brother, Earnest Williams of LaGrange, Ga.; eight grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Timothy Weathers, Rob Williams, Jimmy Weathers, Dempsey
Roberts, Stanley Sellers, Jimmy Bassett, Wayne Bassett and Jimmy Robinson.
 A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Williams was born July 8, 1928, son
of Paul E. and Ollie Lovvorn Williams. He was an Army veteran of the Korean
War, a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, and had been employed with West
Point Foundry Machine Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene
Bassett Williams.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James Shaver

 (LAFAYETTE) James "Jim" Shaver, 78, of LaFayette died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003,
at East Alabama Medical Center.
 Services were at Rock Springs Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25,
with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Charles Whitson and the Rev.
Rodger Adcock officiated.
 Pallbearers were Brad Shaver, Ryan Shaver, Matt Orr, Joe Perdue, Mark Hodge,
Phil Shaver, Brandon McDaniel and Ryan Roberts.
 Surviving are his wife, Sally Shaver of LaFayette; five children, Keith
Shaver and Donna Perez of LaFayette, David Shaver of Alma, Ga., Ellen Roberts 
of Roanoke and Tim Shaver of Woodland; four sisters, Annie Ruth Polk and Faye
McDonald of Lanett, and Dorothy Hopkins and Kay Daniel of LaFayette; 
13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
 Mr. Shaver was born in Chambers County on Feb. 15, 1925. He was a mechanic
for Jack Betts International Harvester dealership in LaFayette for many years. 
He received the Purple Heart as an Army veteran of World War II. He was a
member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.
 Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Derron Leslie Thompson

 (RANBURNE) Services for Derron Leslie Thompson, 49, of Ranburne were Sunday,
Nov. 2, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy
Thompson officiating. Burial was at Mountain View Cemetery. 
 Mr. Thompson died Friday, Oct. 31, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical
Center.
 Survivors include his wife, Terri Thompson of Ranburne; his mother, Onzell
Thompson of Douglasville, Ga.; three daughters, Leslie Smith of Heflin, Anna
Allen of Tallapoosa, Ga., and Shannon Sargent of Douglasville; two sons, Shawn
Thompson of Douglasville and Kobe Thompson of Ranburne; two sisters, Brenda
McGourik and Barbra Thompson, both of Georgia; and three brothers, Keith
Thompson and Steven Thompson, both of Douglasville and John Mac Thompson of
Wedowee; and 12 grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Joey Hanson, Ryan Arrington, Micky Summerville Jr., Neal
Shellnutt, Jody Smith and Keith Thompson Jr.
 Mr. Thompson was a Cleburne County native and lived there most of his life. 
He was a painter. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church and was
preceded in death by a child and by his father, Arvell Thompson.

Marie Jones Motes

 (ALEXANDRIA) Graveside services for Marie Jones Motes, 78, of Alexandria were
Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Anniston Memorial Gardens with the Rev. David
Phillips officiating and Gray Brown-Service Mortuary & Crematory of Anniston in
charge.
 Mrs. Motes died Friday, Oct. 31, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
 Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Motes of Wedowee and Ralph G. Motes 
of Alexandria; two brothers, Harold Jones and Amos Jones, all of Ohatchee; 
a sister, Alice Truitt of Ohatchee; six grandchildren and nine great-
grandchildren.
 Mrs. Motes, an Ohatchee native and longtime resident, had lived in Alexandria
three years. She was a member of Oak Bowery Baptist Church in Ohatchee. She
retired from Tape Craft with 40 years of service. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Vernon A. Motes; and a brother, Lester "Little Buddy" Jones.

Teresa Dianna Jones

 (ATLANTA, Ga.) Teresa Dianna Jones, 44, of Atlanta died Monday, Oct. 27,
2003, at South Fulton Medical Center. Mrs. Jones was born in Sylacauga on Dec.
28, 1958.
 Mrs. Jones is survived by her husband, Steve Jones; a daughter, Jaime Lawanda
Lashley of Atlanta; a son, Thomas Derek Burgamy of Atlanta; her mother, Dorothy
Elizabeth Cowart of Lanett; three brothers, Richard Derrick Holmes, Ronald Wayne
Holmes of Roanoke and Homer Cowart of Lanett; her grandfather, Audley Chapel of
Lanett; four grandchildren; and a special friend, Eddie Chandler. She was
preceded in death by her father, James Riley Holmes Jr.
 Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett. 
The Rev. Rusty Letson officiated.
 Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

James George Crenshaw

 (ROANOKE) Services for James "Jamie" George Crenshaw, 45, of Roanoke, were
Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.
Jody Overton officiating. Burial was at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Woodland.
 Mr. Crenshaw died Saturday, Nov. 1, at his residence.
 Survivors include his mother, Myrtle Crenshaw of Roanoke; one sister, Susan
Moon of LaGrange; two nieces, three nephews, two great-nieces and four
great-nephews.
 Pallbearers were Neil Kirby, Ian Kirby, Matt Jacobs, Bobby Crenshaw, Frazier
Crenshaw and Ronnie Crenshaw.
 A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Crenshaw was born March 3, 1958, son
of Gleves C. and Myrtle Shaw Crenshaw. He was preceded in death by his father
and a sister, Dura Crenshaw.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Greg Lynn Merrill

 (RANBURNE) Services for Greg Lynn Merrill, 47, of Ranburne were Saturday,
Nov. 1, 2003, at 2 p.m. EST at Ranburne Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul
Johnson and Gary Howell officiating. Burial was in Cleburne County Memory
Gardens with Rainwater & West Funeral Home Inc. of Bowdon, Ga., in charge.
 Mr. Merrill died Wednesday, Oct. 29, at University Hospital in Birmingham.
 Survivors include his wife, Becky Hill Merrill; a daughter, Mindy Williamson
of Heflin; and five brothers, Buddy Merrill, Charles Merrill and Toney Merrill,
all of Ranburne, Donell Merrill of Graham and Tommy Merrill of Woodland; a
sister, Angie Lawler of Ranburne.
 Pallbearers were Scott Merrill, Brian Merrill, Jason Merrill, Andy Merrill,
Brent Merrill, Lance Merrill, Eric Merrill, Josh Merrill, Jason Shelton, Jamison
Shelton and Wesley Wright.
 Mr. Merrill, a Carroll County, Ga., native, was a member of Rock Springs
Baptist Church. He was a K-9 police officer for the Heflin Police Department
and a former coroner for Cleburne County. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Robert Eugene and Annie Virginia Lankford Merrill; a brother, Wayne
Merrill; and a nephew.

Cherry Louise Turner

 (OPELIKA) Cherry Louise Turner, 50, of Opelika died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003,
at the Medical Center in Albany, N.Y.
 Mrs. Turner was a native of LaFayette and a graduate of LaFayette High
School. She was a member of Sinai Baptist Church.
 Survivors include a son, Christopher Johnson of Albany, N.Y.; her mother,
Bennie Clark of Albany, N.Y.; a wonderful companion, Roosevelt Stokes of
Opelika; two sisters, Agatha Oliver of Opelika and Minnie Wade of Albany, N.Y.;
three brothers, Robert Johnson and Willie C. Johnson of LaFayette and Edward Lee
Johnson of Camp Hill; and an uncle.
 Services for Mrs. Turner were Thursday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist
Church, with the Revs. Louis Upshaw and Arthur Jackson officiating. Interment
was in Antioch Cemetery.
 Arrangements were by Silmon & Son Funeral Services, Roanoke.

Kathryn Cunningham Brown

 (EAST POINT, Ga.) Kathryn Jean Cunningham Brown, 73, of East Point, Ga., died
Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003.
 Services were Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. at Donehoo-Lewis Funeral Home in
Hapeville, Ga., with the Rev. Talmadge Walker officiating. Burial was in
Randolph Memory Gardens, Rock Mills.
 Mrs. Brown was a native of Roanoke and the daughter of Minnie and Drew "D.C."
Cunningham. She was a homemaker and enjoyed taking part in ladies' club
activities. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hoke Brown.
 Survivors include her daughter, Tanya Brown of Jonesboro, Ga.; a sister, Mary
Benefield of Roanoke; and a brother, Drew Cunningham of Wadley.

Jane Alice Burke

 (ROANOKE) Services for Jane Alice Burke, 64, of Roanoke, formerly of
Baltimore, Md., will be Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum
Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Wendell Rush officiating. Burial will be at
Randolph Memory Gardens.
 The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 8 a.m. on
Wednesday.
 Mrs. Burke died Sunday, Nov. 9, at her home.
 Survivors include her husband, Herman W. Burke of Roanoke; three sons, John
George of Johnson City, Tenn., and Patrick George and Brian George of Roanoke;
two stepdaughters, Lisa Ferguson and April Anthony of Roanoke; three sisters,
Helen Gillespie and Rosalie Wenek of LaFayette and Sherlie McCord of Glen
Burnie, Md.; two brothers, Alvin Knott of Glen Burnie and Donald Knott of Five
Points; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
 A Roanoke resident since 1967, Mrs. Burke was a Baltimore, Md., native, born
Nov. 11, 1938, daughter of Leo Knott Sr. and Millie Johnson Knott. She was a
member of Baptist Tabernacle at Rock Mills and worked as a home health care
assistant with Central Alabama Home Health. She was preceded in death by her
parents and two brothers, Leo Knott Jr. and Raymond Knott.
 Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Carlos Awbry Knott

 (ROANOKE) Services for Carlos Awbry Knott, 73, of Roanoke were Sunday, Nov.
9, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Phillip Johnson
officiating. Burial was at Taylor's Crossroads Church of Christ Cemetery.
 Mr. Knott died Friday, Nov. 7, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
 Survivors include a son, Carlos Knott Jr. of Roanoke; four sisters, Romell
Sherrill of Hickory, N.C., Annie Smith of West Point, Ga., Sara Harmon of
Roanoke and Betty Vinson of Hollywood, Ala.; one granddaughter; and three
great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Harvey Harmon, Steve Duncan Sr., Todd Sims, Bill Mabrey, 
Tim Gore and Roby Carden.
 A Randolph County native, Mr. Knott was born April 15, 1930, son of George
and Pearl Clark Knott. He had been employed with Handley Mills and was preceded
in death by his wife, Frances Young Knott.

Carrie O. Buttrill

 (WOODLAND) Services for Carrie O. Buttrill, 87, of Woodland were Monday, 
Nov. 10, 2003, at noon at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ralph 
Wilson officiating and Del Buttrill delivering the eulogy. Burial was at 
Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mrs. Buttrill died Friday, Nov. 7, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton,
Ga.
 Survivors include her husband, S. A. Buttrill of Woodland; three sons,
Winford Buttrill of Navarre, Fla., Del Buttrill of McDonough, Ga., and Byron
Buttrill of Woodland; one sister, Mary Thomas Smith of Corpus Christie, Texas;
one brother, James Lee Olds of Elberton, Ga.; 15 grandchildren and 
31 great-grandchildren.
 Grandsons served as pallbearers.
 A Georgia native, Mrs. Buttrill was born Dec. 13, 1915, in Elbert County,
daughter of James Newell and Katie Lee Scott Olds. She was a homemaker.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Ruby Lee Pinkston

 (FLINT, Mich.) Ruby Lee Pinkston, 93, of Flint, Mich., died Saturday, Nov. 8,
2003, at Hurley Medical Center, Flint.
 Services will be Saturday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. at Peace and Goodwill Baptist
Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. Lonnie Houston officiating. Interment will be in
the church cemetery.
 Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. Turenicie D. Johnson and Mrs. Myrna
Kirkland of Flint; and two nephews, Reginald Murgerson of Atlanta and Earnest
Johnson of Flint.
 Visitation and viewing will be Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. The body
will be placed in the church one hour prior to services.
 Ms. Pinkston was born in Roanoke on Feb. 14, 1910, daughter of the late Allen
Edmondson and Emma Lee Black. Ms. Pinkston received her master's degree in
education from Alabama State University, and is a member of the Alabama State
Alumni Association. She taught for 37 years at Randolph County Training School
in Roanoke.
 Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Ernestine Hood Brooks

 (WINTER PARK, Fla.) Ernestine Hood Brooks of Winter Park, Fla., died
Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003.
 Ms. Brooks taught school for 35 years in the Troup County and Ft. Pierce,
Fla., public school systems. After retiring in Fort Pierce, she made her home
in Maine until returning to Florida three years ago.
 Ms. Brooks was the daughter of the late Ernest and Gertrude Hood of Roanoke. 
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Hood of Jacksonville, Fla.,
and Hugh Hood of Augusta, Ga.
 Surviving are one son, Stephen Brooks of Winter Park, Fla.; one daughter,
Deborah Brooks Cravey of Ellsworth, Maine; one sister, Margaret Harmon of
Roanoke; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
 A memorial service will be at a later date.

Rodney Dean Ward

 (RANBURNE) Services for Rodney Dean Ward, 48, of Ranburne were Monday, Nov.
10, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Indian Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Damon Smith
and Joel McLeroy officiating. Burial was at Cleburne County Memory Gardens in
Ranburne. Rainwater and West Funeral Home was in charge.
 Mr. Ward died Saturday, Nov. 8.
 Survivors include his wife, Dale Smith Ward of Ranburne; a son, Alan Ward of
Ranburne; his mother, Ezell Estes Ward of Ranburne; three brothers, James Samuel
Ward of Aayes, La., Jimmy Russell Ward and Merlyn Ward of Ranburne; and two
sisters, Glenda Faye Brown of Ranburne and Sara Louise Harrington of Woodland.
 Pallbearers were Keith Ward, Greg Ward, Ellis Smith, Stacy Stephens, Dennis
Lovvorn, and Verbon White.
 Mr. Ward was paint foreman at State University of West Georgia. He was
preceded in death by his father, L. B. Ward.

James W. Clay

 (OXFORD) Services for James W. Clay, 61, of Oxford were Monday, Nov. 10,
2003, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home. Burial was in Mel Wood
Cemetery in Stone Mountain, Ga.
 Mr. Clay died Friday, Nov. 7, in Delta.
 Survivors include two daughters, Vanessa Henry of Ranburne and Susie Price of
Heflin; five sons, Wayne Singleton of LaFayette, Greg Singleton of Florida,
James Clay of Jacksonville, Scott Clay of Oxford and Homer Clay of Birmingham;
two sisters, Mildred Harbin of Metter, Ga., and Lucy Clay of Florida; one
brother, Kenneth Clay of Wedowee; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
 Mr. Clay was a native of Georgia and had lived in Alabama 30 years. He was a
retired truck driver and a produce peddler. He was a Baptist.

Thomas Houston Rozelle

 (WOODLAND) Services for Thomas Houston Rozelle, 72, of Woodland will be
Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Roanoke Church of Christ, with Bro.
Gerald Romine and Bro. Sam Carpenter officiating. Burial will follow at Ashland
City Cemetery.
 Mr. Rozelle will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services.
 Mr. Rozelle died Monday, Nov. 10, at Clay County Hospital in Ashland.
 Survivors include his wife, Shirley Dewberry Rozelle of Woodland; two
daughters, Thersa Daughterty and Merry Martin of Ashland; four sons, David
Rozelle of Ashland, Joel Rozelle of Lineville, Paul Rozelle of Lawrence, Ga.,
and Jerry Rozelle of Sylvester, Ga.; a stepson, Kelly Shaun Baker of Woodland; 
a sister, Winona Rozelle of Ashland; 26 grandchildren and nine great-
grandchildren.
 Pallbearers will be Joseph Daughterty, Josh Rozelle, Kevin Rozelle, Michael
Crenshaw, Robby Hill and Kevin Gosdin.
 A Clay County native, Mr. Rozelle was born Sept. 26, 1931, son of Thomas
Houston Rozelle Sr. and Mamie Brown Rozelle. He was a Korean War veteran, a
member of Roanoke Church of Christ, and had worked as a law enforcement officer,
serving as Daviston's police chief for 20 years. He was preceded in death by a
son, Michael Clark Rozelle.
 Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Hazel Lenora Bracewell Fairman

 (NASHVILLE, Ga.) Hazel Lenora Bracewell Fairman, 75, of Nashville, Ga., died
Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003, at Berrien County Hospital.
 Born April 12, 1928, in Berrien County, Ga., to the late Will and Oppie Lee
Bracewell, she was a homemaker and wife of the late Hugh Fairman. She was a
member of Hope Baptist Church, having recently moved her membership from Tift
Avenue Church of God.
 Survivors include one daughter, Terri Lynn Exum of Roanoke; one sister, Rose
Wright of Nashville, Ga.; one brother, Prentice Bracewell of Alapaha, Ga.; 
two grandsons; two granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.
 A graveside service was held Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. at Empire Primitive Baptist
Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Joe Crumley and the Rev. Pickern officiating. 
Musical selections included "Amazing Grace," sung by the Rev. Ken Williams and
"Go Rest High on That Mountain."
 Arrangements were by Lovein Funeral Home, Nashville.

Robert Arnold Bonner Sr.

 (ROCK MILLS) Services for Robert Arnold Bonner Sr., 81, of Rock Mills were
Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills United Methodist Church, with
the Rev. James Harper and the Rev. Tom Russell officiating. Burial was at
Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mr. Bonner died Thursday, Nov. 6, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
 Survivors include his wife, Mildred Bailey Bonner of Rock Mills; one son, Bob
Bonner of Atlanta, Ga.; and one brother, Laurice Bonner of Rock Mills.
 Pallbearers were Sanders Dupree, Gary Nelson, Larry House, Jimmy Yarbrough,
Ronnie Bonner and Rey Versola.
 A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Bonner was born Oct. 8, 1922, son of
Cecil and Odessa Owens Bonner. He was a World War II veteran, a member of Rock
Mills United Methodist Church and had been employed at Wehadkee Yarn Mills.
 Memorial contributions may be made to Rock Mills United Methodist Church.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Carolyn Nolan

 (ROANOKE) Carolyn Nolan, 51, of Roanoke died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at East
Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
 Services were Saturday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Roanoke,
with the Rev. Gilbert E. Staples, the Rev. Jeffery D. Rosser and the Rev. Travis
Smith officiating. Burial was in East Roanoke Cemetery.

Mark J. Heckenberger

 (NORTHAMPTON, Pa.) Services for Mark J. Heckenberger, 19, of Northampton,
Pa., were Monday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Church with burial in the church cemetery.
 Mr. Heckenberger died Thursday, Nov. 6, in Whitehall, Pa.
 A native of Allentown, Pa., Mr. Heckenberger was born April 15, 1984, son of
Deborah Bates Heckenberger and John J. Heckenberger Jr. Mr. Heckenberger had
worked for Fed-Ex Ground Services in Bethlehem, Pa., for the past four months. 
A graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School in June 2002, he attended
Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C., where he was pursuing a professional
golf management degree. He was a former member of the L.V. Comets hockey team
as a forward for 12 years, a former member of Central Catholic High School
hockey team, a former member of the Central Catholic golf team for four years,
an altar server for Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Northampton for
nine years and a sports enthusiast.
 He is survived by his parents of Northampton; a brother, Lucas J.
Heckenberger of Northampton; his maternal grandparents, Marshall and Rae Bates
of Wedowee; and his paternal grandfather, John J. Heckenberger Sr. of Coplay,
Pa.
 Memorial contributions may be made to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
Mary Church.

Claudia Vowell Horton

 (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Claudia Vowell Horton, 90, of LaGrange, Ga., died Tuesday,
Nov. 4, 2003, at West Georgia Medical Center.
 Mrs. Horton, born June 13, 1913, in the Bethel Community of Randolph County,
Ala., was the daughter of the late Riley and Lucinne Huckabee Vowell. She
retired from Callaway Mills Company and was a member of the 25-Year Club. Her
church membership was at Oakside Baptist Church.
 Survivors include three sons, Earston Lee Horton Sr., Clarence Horton and
Richard Clyde Horton, all of LaGrange; a sister, Jettie Matthews of Bull Head
City, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, 
Richard H. Horton, and two grandchildren, William Dale Horton and Perry
Wayne Pritchett.
 Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in the chapel of
Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in LaGrange with Dr. Ralph Taylor officiating.

 (ASHLAND) Services for Rubye M. Denney, 89, of Ashland were Thursday, Nov. 6,

Lineville Baptist Church Cemetery.
 Mrs. Denney died Monday, Nov. 3, at Clay County Nursing Home.
 Survivors include two daughters, Mary Solley of Alexander City and Laverne
Gibson of Ashland; a son, James M. Denney of Alabaster; three sisters, Dorothy
Smith of Pensacola, Fla., Evelyn Hanners of Lineville and Wanda Miller of
Oxford; four brothers, Lavelle McVey of Lacey Springs, Douglas McVey of
Missouri, Billy Wayne McVey of South Carolina and Ronald Gene McVey of Arkansas;
several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
 Pallbearers were Mark Kyton, Larry Lambert, Chris Gibson, Jason Denney,
Wesley Edmondson and Brian Denney.
 Mrs. Denney, a Clay County native and lifelong resident, was a member of
Providence Primitive Baptist Church. She retired from Clegg Manufacturing
Company in Wadley and worked as a caregiver until she was 83.

 (MONTGOMERY) Services for Julia McCullough, 82, of Montgomery, formerly of
Randolph County were Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Church of
Christ, with Bro. Gerald Romine officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
 Miss McCullough is survived by a sister, Dean Jordan of Montgomery; and two
brothers, Lance McCullough of Newell and Joe McCullough of Montgomery.
 Pallbearers were her nephews.
 Miss McCullough was a native of Randolph County, born July 13, 1921, daughter
of Jody Wilburn McCullough and Lois McManus McCullough. She was retired from
Lamar Manufacturing in Bowdon, Ga., and was a member of Pine Hill Church of
Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Jane Cosper,
Dorothy Smith and Wahneta McCullough, and two brothers, Arnold McCullough and
Jimmy McCullough.
 Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

 (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Mary Jane Liles Daniel, 64, of Wedowee were
Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Church of Christ with Bro.
Wilbur Bass and Bro. Paul Howard officiating. Burial followed at the adjoining
cemetery with Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee in charge.
 Mrs. Daniel died Thursday, Nov. 13, from injuries sustained in an automobile
accident at Douglas County, Ga.
 Survivors include one daughter, Darlene Daniel Padgett of LaFayette; one son,
James G. Daniel of Douglasville, Ga.; six grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth
Spradlin of Woodland; two stepbrothers, James McManus of Woodland and Carl
McManus of Phenix City.
 Pallbearers were Alan Daniel, H. G. Miles, Ricky Murphy, Wayne Messer, Dustin
Messer and Chad Murphy.
 A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Daniel was born April 30, 1939,
daughter of William James and Emma McManus Liles. She was a member of Oak Grove
Church of Christ and had been employed with Terry Manufacturing.

 Mrs. Keeble was the widow of Jerry L. Keeble, and is preceded in death by a
daughter, Geraldine Smith.
 She is survived by a daughter, Barbara R. Robbins of Bonaire, Ga.; a brother,
Roy Williamson of Roanoke; a sister Agnes Bonner of Stockbridge, Ga.; 
eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

 A lifelong resident of this area, Mrs. Hill was born Sept. 10, 1925, in

homemaker and a member of Rock Mills Church of God. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Alpha Hill; a daughter, Deborah Woodlee; and a grandson, Sonny
Hand.

 Mr. McManus died Thursday, Nov. 13, at West Georgia Medical Center in
LaGrange.
 Survivors include his wife, Dean Lamb McManus of Woodland; three daughters,
Becky Cherry of Ocala, Fla., Vicki McManus of Tampa, Fla., and Sherry Green of
Monticello, Fla.; one son, Bill Williams of Woodland; three sisters, Katie Jo
Medders of Anniston, Julia Ann Yates and Charleen Shelton, both of Graham; three
brothers, Wallace McManus of Heflin, Mack McManus of Graham and Wayne McManus of
Wedowee; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
 Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers.
 A former Florida resident, Mr. McManus was a Randolph County native, born
June 21, 1930, son of Olin M. and Lola Johnson McManus. He served as a military
policeman in the Army and the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He
was a member of Gold Ridge Baptist Church and owner/operator of a plant nursery. 
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Shannon Williams.

 A Cullman County native, Mrs. Walker was born June 28, 1949, daughter of

 (ODENVILLE) Services for Charles Holloway, 78, of Odenville, were Tuesday,

 Mr. Holloway died Sunday, Nov 15, at UAB Medical Center West in Bessemer.

James Holloway of Spring Hill, Fla., and Robert Holloway of Wedowee.
 Mr. Holloway was a Calhoun County native but had lived the last 20 years in
Odenville. He was a retired draftsman with Rust Engineering in Birmingham and a
member of the First United Methodist Church of Leeds. He was preceded in death
by his wife, Mildred Cofield Holloway.

with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
 Born Jan. 11, 1936, in Chambers County, Mr. Ross was a member of Hopewell
Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mae Etta Askew Ross.
 Surviving are his wife, Margaret Ross of Milltown; his father, George H. Ross
of Milltown; three daughters, Kathy McGuire and Michelle Brooks of Roanoke and
Vickie Roberson of Riverdale, Ga.; one sister, Lonita Poole of San Francisco,
Calif.; one brother, Jeremiah Ross of San Francisco; three grandchildren; and a

 Mrs. Chase is survived by two daughters, Eloise DuBuc of Lawrenceville, Ga.,
and Malvie Jo Powers of Conyers, Ga.; two sons, Sanford Chase of Valley and
Ernest Chase of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four sisters, Jewel Freeman of Oneonta,
Thelma Bryan of Holly Pond, Louise Harrison of Cullman and Marlene Butts of
Birmingham; one brother, Leon Siggers of Indianapolis, Ind.; 12 grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren.
 Born Dec. 26, 1915, in Randolph County, Mrs. Chase loved her church and doing
anything she could involving the church's needs and activities. She was a
member of Pentecostal Church of God in River View. Mrs. Chase was the daughter
of the late Owsie Jackson Siggers and Coy Siggers.

in Union Chapel Cemetery.

Roundtree of Chicago; a sister, Mattie Lee Roundtree-Wilson of Wedowee; and
special cousins King David Turner of Wedowee and Effie Rowland of Chicago. He
was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Talbert Roundtree and John Henry
Roundtree.
 Public viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service from 1 until 6 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 23. The body will be placed in the church one hour before services.

Orbie C. Hill

 (LINEVILLE) Services for Orbie C. Hill, 64, of Lineville will be Wednesday,
Nov. 26, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel in Lineville, with
the Rev. Dan Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Clay County Memory
Gardens.
 Mrs. Hill died Sunday, Nov. 23, at Clay County Hospital.
 She was a native of Cleburne County and had lived most of her life in
Muscadine. She was retired from Sewell's in Bowdon, Ga., and was a member of
Bethel Methodist Church in Cleburne County.
 She is survived by her husband, Thomas O. Hill of Lineville; daughter, Terri
Lynn Simons of Lineville; one son, Thomas Doyle Cash of Gaithersburg, Md.; one
sister, Geraldine Allred of Muscadine; one brother, James Laminack of Muscadine;
and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, 
I. V. Bentley Laminack and Thomas Manuel Laminack; one sister, Laverne Robinson;
and one brother, Jerry Laminack.
 The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral home in Lineville on
Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and until service time on Wednesday.

Betty Jane Owens Walker

 (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Betty Jane Owens Walker, 64, of Franklin, Ga., died Sunday,
Nov. 23, 2003, at Carrollton Manor Nursing Home in Carrollton, Ga.
 Mrs. Walker was born in Randolph County to the late Jesse Wallace Owens and
Myrtie Lucille Hall Owens. For many years she served in the nursing profession,
where she brought love and care to all her patients. In her latter years she
enjoyed being a housewife and mother. She was a member of Franklin First
Baptist Church.
 Services will be Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 3 p.m. at Franklin First Baptist
Church, with the Revs. Talmadge Chandler and Ronnie Jordan officiating. 
Interment will follow in Randolph Memory Gardens, Rock Mills. The family will
receive guests at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon from 5 to 7 p.m.
 Survivors include one daughter, Ginger Cornelius of Carrollton; three sons,
Rick Walker of Rome, Ga., Billy Walker and Danny Walker of LaGrange, Ga.; one
sister, Annette Massa of Franklin; and eight grandchildren.

 (FIVE POINTS) Alfred Louis Pike, 61, of Five Points died Sunday, Nov. 23,

with the Rev. Sonny Kent officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
 Mr. Pike was a native of Randolph County, born March 28, 1942. He was
employed at Pike Electric.

Moncrief and Susan Pike of Roanoke; three sons, Barry Pike, Ricky Pike and Tommy
Pike of Five Points; two sisters, Clara Royster of Roanoke and Mamie Waldrop of

 Mr. Howle died Sunday, Nov. 23, at Carraway-Methodist Medical Center in
Birmingham.
 Survivors include his wife, Flora Bentley Howle; two sons, Barry Howle of
Graham and Dwain Howle of Franklin, Ga.; a daughter, Mary Davis of Ranburne;
five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, John C. Howle of
Eufaula and W. M. Howle Jr. of Ranburne; and a sister, Gertrude Brockhoff of
Ranburne.

 Mr. Howle was born Oct. 30, 1921, in Cleburne County to the late W.M. and

 Smith was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church, Five Points, and a World War
Il veteran. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Ruth Smith.
 Survivors include a sister, Arrie Smith of Roanoke; a primary caregiver,

 Services for Mr. Smith were Monday, Nov. 24, at noon at Sweet Home Baptist
Church, with the Revs. L. B. Houston, Charlie Carlisle and W. Barnes
officiating. Interment was in the Sweet Home Cemetery.

Nancy L. Williams

 (PINE HILL) Nancy Landers Williams, 94, of Pine Hill died Saturday, 
Nov. 22, 2003, at Twin Fountains Home in LaGrange, Ga.
 Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at Pine Hill Christian Church in
Randolph County. Minister Ralph Posey officiated. Interment was in the church
cemetery.
 Pallbearers were Brian Williams, Thamos Williams, W. F. Stillwell, O'Neal
Stillwell, John Henry Stillwell, Mike Willingham and Jack Simpson.
 Born Nov. 14, 1909, in Randolph County, Mrs. Williams was the daughter of the
late Frances and Mary Lee Mitchum. Landers. She lived in LaGrange before making
her home in Pine Hill in 1941. She was a member of Pine Hill Christian Church. 
She was the wife of the late Hugh M. Williams.
 Survivors include one son, Elmer Williams of Hogansville, Ga.; two daughters,
Clara Daniel of Hogansville and Elsie Lee McCullough of Huguley; one sister,
Lucille Willingham of LaGrange; five grandchildren and a number of
great-grandchildren.
 Arrangements were by Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home, Hogansville.

Mavis Christine Hodge

 (ROCK MILLS) Services for Mavis Christine Hodge, 72, of Rock Mills were
Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Frank Foster officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mrs. Hodge died Thursday, Nov. 20, at West Georgia Medical Center in
LaGrange.
 Survivors include two daughters, Nadine Bennett and Denise Kirby of Rock
Mills; one son, Steve Hodge of Roanoke; two brothers, Bonnell Norred and Lonnie
B. Norred of Roanoke; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Greg Norred, Billy Ray Burks, Gene Burks, Ronnie Bonner,
Kyle Laws and Mike Brewer.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Hodge was born Feb. 25, 1931, daughter of
William Odell and Hattie Mae Sheppard Norred. She was a homemaker and a member
of Rock Mills Church of God. Mrs. Hodge had lived in College Park, Ga., for 13
years before returning to this area in 1971. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Charles A. Hodge, and a son, Shane Hodge.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Joe Lewis Goode

 (ROANOKE) Joe Lewis Goode, 67, of Roanoke died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, 
at his residence.
 Services will be Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. at Wehadkee Missionary Baptist
Church, with the Rev. Elijah Jackson Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the
church cemetery.
 Survivors include two sons, Michael Goode of Atlanta and Bobby Joe Goode of
Roanoke; two daughters, Erma Ruth Hill and Barbara Sue Goode of Roanoke; a
brother, Leroy Goode of Jacksonville, Fla.; four sisters, Rebecca Hudson of
LaGrange, Ga., Hazel Cameron and Johnnie Harris of Dayton, Ohio, and Genell
Baker of Roanoke; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his wife, Susie Mae Goode.
 The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral.
 Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Marcha Taylor Bailey

 (CROSSVILLE) Marcha Taylor Bailey, 82, of Crossville, formerly of Roanoke,
died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at Estes Nursing Facility, Crossville.
 Mrs. Bailey is survived by a son, Tim Bailey of Valley; two grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Iva Jean Allen of Haines City, Fla.
 Mrs. Bailey was born in Wedowee on Oct. 30, 1921, daughter of the late Eva
Estelle Willingham Taylor and Noah Escar Taylor. She was employed as a
seamstress in Roanoke.
 Graveside services were at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24, at Johnson Memorial
Gardens, with the Rev. Gerald Sykes officiating.
 The family asks that memorial donations be made to the Spring Road Christian
Church Oasis Project in her memory.

Rose Hyatt

 (HEARD COUNTY, Ga.) Rose "Rosie" Hyatt, 75, of Heard County, Ga., died
Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at her home.
 Mrs. Hyatt, born Nov. 26, 1927, in Meriwether County, Ga., was the daughter
of the late Paul E. and Dollie Jenkins Smith. She had lived in Heard County all
her life and retired from Milliken and Company. She was Baptist.
 Survivors include a daughter, Betty Caswell of LaGrange, Ga.; two sons, Larry
Hyatt of Roanoke and Mike Hyatt of LaGrange; a sister, Pauline McCormick of
Roanoke; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Adams; and three sisters,
Nellie Stokley, Libby Godfrey and Christine Littlefield.
 Funeral services were Friday, Nov. 21, in the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with
the Rev. Tom Shannon officiating. Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange.

Blanche Royston Steely

 (ANNISTON) Blanche Royston Steely, 83, of Anniston died Tuesday, Nov. 18,
2003, in Anniston.
 Services were Friday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. at Parker Memorial Baptist Church
Chapel in Anniston, with Dr. Billy Harris officiating. Graveside services were
Friday at 2 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery in Chambers County.
 Survivors include two sons, Thomas L. Steely of Madison, Miss., and Harold
Steely of Dallas, Texas; and five grandchildren.
 Mrs. Steely was a native of Chambers County and a resident of Calhoun County
for the past 50 years. She was retired from the Calhoun County Board of
Education and was a member of the Pink Ladies Auxillary of Regional Medical
Center for years and Parker Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Harold E. Steely.
 In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Restoring God's
House Fund at Parker Memorial Baptist Church, 1205 Quintard Ave., Anniston, AL
36201.
 Arrangements were by Brown & Kughn Memory Chapel, Anniston.

Gladys Swafford

 (HEFLIN) Services for Gladys Swafford, 80, of Heflin were Wednesday, Nov. 19,
2003, at 11 a.m. at New Harmony Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Fordham
officiating. Burial was in New Harmony Cemetery with Dryden Funeral Home of
Heflin in charge.
 Mrs. Swafford died Monday, Nov. 17, at Cleburne County Nursing Home in
Heflin.
 Survivors include two sisters, Marie Gay of Bowdon, Ga., and Jerell Volvia of
West Memphis, Ark.; a brother, L. B. Richardson of LaGrange, Ga.; a
stepdaughter, Shirley Blair of Welling, Okla.; and three grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Robert Johnson, Roman Fordham, Byron Richardson, Tony Gay,
Buddy Turner and Wilson Richardson.
 Mrs. Swafford, a Randolph County native, had lived in Cleburne County most of
her life. She was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Wilber Lloyd Swafford; and a daughter, Margie Swafford.
