OBITUARIES:
Clara Allums Tatum
(ABANDA) Clara Allums Tatum, 84, of Abanda died Sept. 26, 1995, at George H.
Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
The funeral for Mrs. Tatum was at Abanda United Methodist Church on Thursday,
Sept. 28, with interment at Tatum Cemetery in Milltown. Officiating ministers were the
Revs. James Duke, Jack Hollis and Floyd Aikens.
Survivors include two daughters, LaVonia Osborn and Genette Aikens of Abanda;
one sister, Nell Gantt of Roanoke; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Tatum was born Dec. 7, 1910, in Randolph County. She was a member of
Abanda Methodist Church and was part-owner and operator of Abanda Grocery for
17 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Rotton Tatum.
Pallbearers were Joe Blanks, Gordon Ballard, Ken Ballard, Sidney Green, Ed Estes
and Fred Bailey.

Mary Ruth Harris
(RANBURNE) Mary Ruth Harris, 72, of Route 1, Ranburne, died Tuesday, Sept. 26,
1995, at Bowdon Area Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Clay County March 7, 1923, the daughter of the late John and Annie
Griffin Grizzle. Mrs. Harris was a member of Ranburne First Baptist Church and was a
homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Winford Harris, and a
granddaughter, Cindy Lee Harris.
Survivors include a son, Robin Harris of Ranburne; three daughters, Patricia Smith and
Paulette Ward of Bowdon, Ga., and Johnnie Pollard of Ranburne; six grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; and two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Mae Jones and Mrs. Mildred Mitchell of
Ashland.
Funeral services were Thursday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at Ranburne First Baptist Church,
with the Rev. Clonie Williams and the Rev. Kit Carson officiating. Music was furnished by
the church choir.
Pallbearers were Roy Saxon, Donald Anglin, Clyde Gibbs, Arnold Anglin, Huel Love,
Glenn Hyatt, Mike Gibbs and Joe Neal Grogans. Honorary pallbearers were Irene Anglin,
Ty Gibbs, Rosa Lee Whitley, Louise Chambers, Magalene Kemp and Myrtle Montgomery.
Interment services followed in Cleburne County Memory Gardens, with the Rev.
Derek Smith in charge of graveside services.

Ruby B. Colley
(VALLEY) Ruby B. Colley, 82, of Valley died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 1995, at East
Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
A native of Chambers County, Mrs. Colley was born April 6, 1913. She was retired
from West Point Pepperell, where she had worked at Fairfax Mill and was the first woman
to practice silk screen printing. She was a member of Shawmut First Baptist Church and a
former member of the Hobby Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Geeter of Riverdale, Ga.; three sons, Harry L.
Colley and Richard T. Colley of Valley and Larry L. Colley of Wedowee; a sister, Sara
Jones of Fayetteville, Ga.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at Shawmut First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, with
burial in Shawmut Cemetery. Dr. Jerome King officiated.

Lommie Vowell
(WEDOWEE) Lommie Vowell, 74, of Rt. 1, Wedowee died suddenly Monday, Oct. 2,
1995, at Wedowee Hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Vowell will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Mt. Grove
Baptist Church with the Revs. J. C. Holloway and Donald Spradlin officiating. Burial will
follow in the adjoining cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mattie Will Vowell of Wedowee; nine daughters,
Linda Bolt, Dorothy Hunt, Lottie Key, Debra Key, Cathy Key and Shelia Earnest all of
Wedowee, Sandra Brown of Newell, Wanda Melton of Wadley and Janice Sprayberry of
Woodland; three sons, Vernon Vowell and Randy Vowell of Wedowee and Larry Vowell
of Maryland; four sisters, Velma Kent of Wadley, Mattie Lou Nix and L. V. Parker of
Roanoke and Jewell Watts of Hampton, Ga.; 22 grandchildren and eight great-
grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Bolt, Chasey Brown, Tony Brown, Rodney Waters, Jason
Vowell, Waylon Vowell and Anthony Bowen.
Mr. Vowell was a native of Randolph County, born on Aug. 26, 1921, son of Wayne
and Lottie Cummings Vowell. He was a farmer and a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Vowell will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, and the family will receive
friends until one hour prior to funeral services. He will lie in state at the church for one
hour.

Ethel Baker McCarley
(OPELIKA) Ethel Baker McCarley, 89, of Opelika died Monday, Oct. 2, 1995, at
Lee Manor Healthcare.
Funeral services for Mrs. McCarley will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Jeffcoat
Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bobby Carpenter and Billy Allen officiating. Burial
will be in Garden Hills Cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, James McCarley and Clyde J. McCarley Jr. of Opelika
and Graham McCarley of Standing Rock; six daughters, Gertrude Joyner of Midway,
Clythel Jakcie Tumlin of Tallassee, Doris Faye Hill of Woodland, Elizabeth Thornton of
Notasulga, Margie Lundy of Crestview, Fla.[,] and Lola A. Douglas of Greenwood, S.C.;
35 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. McCarley was a native of Clay County, born on March 10, 1906, but had lived
most of her life in Notasulga, Ala. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Macon
County and was the widow of Mr. Clyde James McCarley.

Ralph Sonny' Creed
(WEDOWEE) Ralph Sonny Creed, 55, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died suddenly on
Thursday, Sept. 28, 1995, in Carmel, N.Y.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 2, at Valley Grove Primitive Baptist
Church, with the Rev. Steve Dempsey officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Creed is survived by his wife, Helen Marie Creed of Wedowee; one daughter, Mrs.
Carrie Shipp of Powder Springs, Ga.; two sons, Carl Creed of Maryland and Ronnie
Creed of Nebraska; four step-children, Jamie Lynn Alcott of Taos, N.M., and Melissa
Dale, William White and Rebecca Hall of Albuquerque, N.M.; five sisters, Virginia
McComb of Anniston, Edna Ruth Eaves of Oxford, Zelma Howard of Lamoore, Calif.,
Mary Nixon of Morrow, Ga., and Joanne Creed of Fairburn, Ga.; and 11 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Edward Lee Creed, Eddie Creed, Timmy Nixon, Mike Manley, Eldo
McComb, Jr., Doug Wreyford, Tommy Nixon and Brian Foster. Honorary pallbearers
were sons-in-law and friends.
Mr. Creed was born on May 26, 1940, the son of James Clyde and Clara Mae Fowler
Creed. He was co-owner of C&M Motor Sports Racing. He was a long-distance truck
driver for 38 years. He was preceded in death by one brother, Benjamin Creed, one
daughter, Linda Sue Creed, and one son, Christopher Creed. He was a veteran of the
Korean Conflict.

Ezma Pauline McCollough
(VILLA RICA, Ga.) Ezma Pauline McCollough, 76, of Villa Rica, Ga., died Sunday,
Oct. 1, 1995.
She is survived by her brothers, Thomas Tom McCollough of Villa Rica and William
Bill McCollough Sr. of LaGrange, Ga.; several nieces and nephews; and special friends
Billy and Betty Willoughby of Villa Rica.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 1 p.m. at Ephesus Baptist Church, with the
Rev. Billy McCollough and the Rev. Aaron McCollough officiating. Interment was in
Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cleo Bruce Jeter Jr.
(ROANOKE) Graveside services for Cleo Bruce Jeter Jr., 61, of Roanoke will be
Wednesday, Oct. 4, 1995, at 11 a.m. from Randolph Memory Gardens, the Rev. Phillip
Johnson officiating.
Mr. Jeter died Sunday, Oct. 1, at his home after a short illness.
A Langdale (Chambers County) native, Mr. Jeter was born Oct. 17, 1933, son of Cleo
Bruce Jeter Sr. and Sally Fannie Faulkner Jeter. He was an Air Force veteran of the
Korean War and had worked as a security guard. He was preceded in death by his parents
and a son, Richard Paul Jeter.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Ann Bowen Jeter of Roanoke; two daughters, Lisa
Jeter Harper and Dana Jeter Brooks, both of Roanoke; two sons, David Jeter of Franklin,
Ga., and Nicky Jeter of Roanoke; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer
Society (1599 Clifton Road, N.E., Atlanta, GA 30329).
Pallbearers will be Phelix Johnson, Sam Hester, Dewayne Harper, Gene Ferrell, Billy
Lane and Billy Brooks.

Matthew Scott Woody
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Matthew Scott Woody, 18 months, of Roanoke
were Saturday, Oct. 7, 1995, at 1 p.m. from Faith Baptist church, with the Revs. S. T.
Janney, Ricky Emery, Franklin Foster and Deryl Wood officiating. Burial was at Randolph
Memory Gardens.
The child died Wednesday, Oct. 4, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile
accident near Roanoke.
He was born March 29, 1994, son of Larry Scott and Eunice Lynn Woodley Woody.
Survivors include his father, Larry Scott Woody of Roanoke; grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Larry W. Woody of Roanoke and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Woodlee of Roanoke;
great-grandparents, Bryce W. Woody of Roanoke, Mrs. Hasel Holloway of Roanoke and
Mrs. Eunice Mae Woodlee of Roanoke; and a sister, Ashley Woody of Roanoke.

A Roanoke native, Mrs. Woody was born Aug. 8, 1972, daughter of Charles Joseph
and Ruth Evelyn Owens Woodlee. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Baptist
Church.
Survivors include her husband, Scott Woody of Roanoke; a daughter, Ashley Woody,
also of Roanoke; her parents, Charles Joseph and Ruth Woodlee of Roanoke; her
grandmother, Eunice Mae Woodlee of Roanoke; four sisters, Runita Weldon of Valley,
Deborah Vaughn of Roanoke, Vickie Cummings of Alexander City and Patricia Kaylor of
Roanoke; a brother, Wayne Brown of Anniston; and a half-brother, Bo Waldrep of
Roanoke.

Jessie James Pierce
(WADLEY) Funeral services for Jessie James Pierce, 42, of Wadley were Saturday,
Oct. 7, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Jack Womack
and Vick Kirk officiating. Burial was at the cemetery of Forrester's Chapel United
Methodist Church, Wadley.
Mr. Pierce died Wednesday, Oct. 4, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile
accident near Roanoke.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Dec. 27, 1952, son of John and
Pearl Hodges Pierce. He was a member of Wadley Baptist Church, was employed by
Domino's Pizza, attended Randolph County Learning Center and for several years raised
more money for the center in the annual Bike-Hike than any other participant.
Survivors include a sister, Rose Knight of Wadley; a brother, Jim Pierce of Rockmart,
Ga.; two nephews and two nieces.
Pallbearers were Lavoy Caldwell, Reggie Caldwell, Boyce Caldwell, Ken Ray, Gregory
Kirk and Billy Knight.

Jimmie Lee Crouch Vinson
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Jimmie Lee Crouch Vinson, 75, of Roanoke will be
Wednesday, Oct. 11, 1995, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Roanoke, with Dr. Douglas
Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Vinson died Sunday, Oct. 8, in Birmingham.
A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, she was born Feb. 14, 1920, daughter
of Benny and Cora Lee Smith Crouch. She was a homemaker and a member of First
Baptist Church in Roanoke, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 30 years. She had
served as WMU district director, as Randolph Baptist Association representative, and as a
member of the Magnolia Garden Club and the Roanoke Literary Club.
Survivors include her husband, Hoyt Vinson of Roanoke; two daughters, Barbara
Robinson and Angelia Peacock of Birmingham; three sons, Philip Vinson and Michael
Vinson of Birmingham and Jim Vinson of Palm Bay, Fla.; one sister, Eucal Weddle of
Tuscumbia; one brother, Tommy Crouch of Birmingham; eight grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Vinson will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy McKinney, Byron Morrison, Don McManus, Frank Phillips,
Wayne Rice and Spec Bonner.

William Wallace Manley
(ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla.) William Wallace Manley, 65, of Atlantic Beach, Fla., died
Thursday, Oct. 5, 1995, in the VA Hospital, Tuskegee, Ala., after an extended illness.
Funeral services were Sunday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Home Chapel,
the Rev. Scott McKay and the Rev. Max New officiating. Burial was in Rock Springs
Cemetery.
Mr. Manley is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Dura Benefield of Wedowee, Mrs.
Leoneda Estes of Bowdon, Ga., Mrs. Lemerle Evans of Anderson, Miss., and Cordie
Pickron of Columbus, Ga.; [and] several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were nephews.
Mr. Manley was born March 17, 1930, in Randolph County, Ala., son of William
Welcome and Mattie Rmandie Bailey Manley. He had lived in Florida for the past 42
years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was retired from the U.S. Navy.

Fannie Stephens
(DADEVILLE) Fannie Stephens, 88, of Dadeville died Sunday, [date missing,
probably Oct. 8,] 1995, at Dadeville Health Care Center.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Annie M. Kelly of District Heights, Maryland,
four grandsons and one granddaughter.
Graveside services will be Thursday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. at East Roanoke Cemetery at
the corner of Avenue A and Chemical Avenue.
Mrs. Stephens was a native of Talladega and was a long-time resident of the former
Rosser Nursing Home in Roanoke. She was formerly married to the late Willie Kimbrough
and the late Grant Oden. She was a member of A.M.E. Zion Church in Talladega.

Margaret Gooden Barfield
(ROANOKE) Graveside services for Margaret Gooden Barfield, 64, of Route 2,
Roanoke, were Friday, Oct. 6, 1995, at 2 p.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens with the
Revs. David Holmes and Mike Pope officiating.
Mrs. Barfield died Monday, Oct. 2, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
A Randolph County native, she was born Nov. 24, 1930, daughter of John D. and
Annie Green Gooden. She was an active member of Rock Mills United Methodist Church,
an elementary Sunday school teacher and a member of the church choir.
Survivors include her husband, Lynn Barfield of Roanoke; a daughter, Beth Chandler
of Roanoke; two sons, Randy Barfield of Yuba City, Calif., and Allen Barfield of Lithia
Springs, Ga.; two sisters, Gladys Hardin of Macon, Ga., and Ruth Nichols of Augusta,
Ga.; two brothers, Lavelle Gooden of Roanoke and Bobby Gooden of Opelika; eight
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Ken Hicks, Bobby Kirby, Junior Rollins, Carey Holloway, Brett
Rollins and Bryan Holloway.

Violet Maxine Stephens
(CARROLLTON, Ga.) Violet Maxine Stephens, 74, of Carrollton, Ga., died Sunday,
Oct. 7, 1995, at Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton.
Funeral services were at Usrey Chapel on Monday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m., with burial in
Pine Hill Memorial Park, Talladega. The Rev. Woodrow Stephens officiated.
A native of Clay County, Miss Stephens grew up in Roanoke. She was a member of
the Baptist Home Mission Board for 30 years and taught at Valley Baptist Academy in
Harlington [sic - Harlingen], Texas, for 28 years. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist
Church in Carrollton.
Survivors include two sisters, Lonie Stewart of Vienna, Ga., and Sybil Stewart of
LaGrange, Ga.; one brother, the Rev. Woodrow Stephens of Talladega; and a number of
nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Ted Stephens, Randy Stephens, Mike Stephens, Gerson Pollard, Jerry
Pollard and Tommy Windsor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church of one's choice or to the
Violet Stephens Scholarship Fund at Valley Baptist Academy, Harlingten [sic], Texas
78550.

Ausbie [Aubie?] Howard
(WEST POINT, Ga.) Aubie Howard, 75, of West Point, Ga., died Sunday, Oct. 8,
1995, at University of Alabama Medical Center, Birmingham.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Donna Howard of West Point; two daughters, Ms.
Debra Howard and Ms. Denise Howard of Detroit, Mich.; six sons, Andr Howard and
Larry Howard of Detroit, Steven Redd and Desmond Howard of West Point, Terry Redd
of Atlanta, and Ronnie Redd of Abbeville, Ga.; and several grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 14, at 2 p.m. at Roanoke Kingdom Hall of
Jehovah's Witnesses. Mr. Howard will lie in state at Clark Memorial Funeral Service from
10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The family will receive friends there from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Howard was a native of Ferndale, Mich. He spent most of his adult life in
Michigan, where he worked for 39 years with Cadillac/General Motors. After retirement
in 1985, he moved to West Point. He worshipped at the Roanoke Kingdom Hall of
Jehovah's Witnesses and was an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Army.

William Lee Hudson
(FIVE POINTS) Graveside services for William Lee Hudson, 83, of Five Points were
Tuesday, Oct. 10, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery (Chambers
County), with the Rev. Thomas McKee officiating.
Mr. Hudson died Sunday, Oct. 8, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange after a
short illness.
A Chambers County native and lifelong resident, he was born March 16, 1912, son of
James Lee and Parrie Crawford Hudson. He had worked as a sewing machine mechanic.
His wife, Bessie Ruth Bonner Hudson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Harold T. Hudson of Five Points; two sisters, Frances Brooks
of Five Points and Bessie Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; and a brother, Crawford Hudson of
LaGrange.
Pallbearers were Angelo Hanners, Bobby Jones, Al Jones and Johnny Deason.

Charles Jefferson Birdsong, Jr.
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Charles Jefferson Birdsong, Jr., 75, of Roanoke
were Monday, Oct. 9, 1995, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Chris
Hester, Wallace Roberts and E. G. Clark officiating. Burial was in Antioch Christian
Church Cemetery in Chambers County.
Mr. Birdsong died Friday, Oct. 6, at Randolph County Hospital after an extended
illness.
A lifelong resident of Chambers County, Mr. Birdsong was born Oct. 24, 1919, son of
Charles Jefferson Birdsong, Sr. and Emily R. Elder Birdsong. He was a World War II
army veteran, a member of Antioch Congregational Christian Church and had worked as a
dairyman and cattle farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Bovine Hamlin Birdsong of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs.
Howard Dunn of Roanoke and Mrs. T. A. Griffin of Valley; and several nieces and
nephews.
Pallbearers were Charles Battit, Mack Rollins, Jim Lane, Ben Benford, Frank Benford
and Jerry McKay.

Lewis R. Hoggs
(LANETT) Lewis R. Hoggs, 61, of Lanett died Thursday, Oct. 5, 1995, at George H.
Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 8, at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) at Lanett High School
Auditorium with the Revs. J. D. Darden, Arthur Thomas, Walter L. Darden, Rudolph
Allen Jr. and Jesse Walker Jr. officiating. Burial followed in New Hope Baptist Church
Cemetery in Lanett.
Mr. Hoggs is survived by his wife, Julia C. Hoggs of Lanett; his son, Roger Ferrell of
Columbus, Ga.; two brothers, John (J. D.) Hoggs of West Point, Ga., and Clarence Hoggs
of Lanett; and two sisters, Mattie Wilson of Carrollton, Ga., and Louise Ferrell of Lanett.
Born Jan. 31, 1934, in Chambers County, Mr. Hoggs was a member and deacon of
New Hope Baptist Church in Lanett. He served as superintendent of the church school,
was a member of the Senior Choir, and instructor in the Bowen East District Congress.
He received his early education in the Lanett public schools, received his B.S. degree from
Alabama State University and his master's and sixth-year degree from Auburn University.
Mr. Hoggs served as principal in the Randolph County Schools and teacher in the
LaGrange City Schools. He served as principal of Lanett Junior High School for several
years. Mr. Hoggs was presently the assistant principal at Lanett High School. He was a
member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and served in the U.S. Army.

Jewell H. Rollins
(ROANOKE) Jewell H. Rollins, 89, of Route 3, Roanoke, died Wednesday, Oct. 11,
1995, at Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke, after a short illness.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Rocky Branch Baptist Church
with the Revs. Johnny Bishop and David Daniel officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Mrs. Rollins was born in Georgia on May 6, 1906, daughter of Joseph and Mary Smith
Huey. She was a homemaker and a member of Hobson Homemakers Club, Rocky Branch
Baptist Church and the WMU.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Frances Huddleston of Roanoke; one son, Jackie
Rollins of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Wayne Rollins, Brenda Belvey and Helen Clark;
one sister, Mrs. Emma Burson of Wedowee; and one brother, Joe C. Huey of Burlington,
N.C.
Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.

Macie R. Rollins
(ROANOKE) Macie R. Rollins, 85, of Route 1, Roanoke, died Thursday, Oct. 12,
1995, in Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Highway First Congregational
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Jetton officiating. Burial was in Potash Cemetery.
Mrs. Rollins is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Laverne Eris Battit, Mrs. Duralene
Bailey, Mrs. Maggie Rollins Olson and Mrs. Margaret Brown, all of Roanoke, Mrs. Doris
Jeanette Rollins Spivey of Cragford, and Mrs. Maxine Pike of Greenville, Ga.; four sons,
E. V. Preach Rollins of Wedowee, and Mack Rollins, Hulan Rollins and Thomas
Rollins, all of Roanoke; 26 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-
grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ila Crenshaw of Ephesus, Ga.; and one brother, Henry
Richardson of Rock Mills.
Pallbearers were grandchildren.
Mrs. Rollins was a native of Randolph County, born May 7, 1910, the daughter of
Tommy and Martharine Bailey Richardson. She was a homemaker and a member of
Highway First Congregational Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Levi Rollins, and two children, Levon and Betty Sue Rollins.

Jerry Wayne Gay, Sr.
(ROANOKE) Jerry Wayne Gay, Sr., 50, of Rt. 3, Roanoke, died Sunday, Oct. 15,
1995, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Big Springs Baptist Church, with
the Revs. Steve Dempsey, Gus Young and David Daniel officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Gay is survived by his wife, Mrs. Beth Gay of Roanoke; one daughter, Teresa Gay
of Sylacauga; one son, Jerry Wayne Gay, Jr., of Sylacauga; one granddaughter, Brooke
Gay of Sylacauga; nine step-grandchildren; three step-daughters, Jeanie Ingram and Janice
McWhorter of Fairfax and Carla Crews of Rock Mills; one step-son, John Gilley of
Opelika; and two sisters, Mary Nell Green of Roanoke and Janella Prince of Oneonta.
Mr. Gay was a native of Randolph County, born Jan. 26, 1945, the son of Dewey Gay
and Mary Eris Heard Gay Sikes, a member of Big Springs Baptist Church and was a cattle
farmer. He was a member of the Randolph County Cattlemen's Association.
Pallbearers were Basil Spradlin, Alan Ingram, Lowell McDaniel, Don Green, Tommy
Prince, Glenn Prince, Richard Landreth and Bobby Jones.

Effie Lee Bennett
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Effie Lee Bennett, 84, of Roanoke were Thursday,
Oct. 12, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. S. T. Janney officiating.
Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Bennett died Tuesday, Oct. 10, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika after
a short illness.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Feb. 4, 1911, daughter of Noah
Calvin and Ludie Sherrer Brown. She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Baptist
Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Nettie Motley of Gainesville, Ga., and Berma Tolson
of Phenix City; three sisters, Dale Clark of Roanoke, Ethel Calhoun of Lanett and Rosa
Simmions of Baltimore, Md.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Aubra Daniel
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Aubra Daniel, 72, of Roanoke were Monday, Oct.
16, 1995, at 2 p.m. from El Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. O. J. Hodnett and Lynn
McClain officiating. Burial was at Center Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Daniel died Saturday, Oct. 14, at his home after an extended illness.
A Randolph County native, he was born Jan. 2, 1923, son of Lee and Pallie Smith
Daniel. He was a member of El Bethel Baptist Church, was a World War II veteran,
U.S. Navy, and had worked as a carpenter. One daughter, Angela Daniel, preceded him
in death.
Survivors include his wife, Josie Pearl Johnson Daniel of Roanoke; a daughter, Christi
Treadwell, also of Roanoke; three sons, Gary Daniel of Douglasville, Ga., and Stanley
Daniel and Steve Daniel, both of Roanoke; two sisters, Clara Nix of Roanoke and Lucille
Morrow of LaGrange, Ga.; one brother, R. C. Daniel of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Tim Daniel, Scott Daniel, Chad Daniel, Chuck Daniel, Russ Daniel
and Clint Daniel. Grandchildren will serve [sic - served] as honorary pallbearers.

Margaret Goodwin
(JACKSON, Miss.) Margaret Goodwin, 53, a Jackson real estate broker and 27-year
resident of North Jackson, died of cancer at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center on
Tuesday, Oct. 17, 1995. She had owned and operated Margaret Goodwin Realty for the
past 18 years.
A graduate of Handley High School in Roanoke, Ala., Mrs. Goodwin was a graduate
also of Mississippi Realtors Institute and Greenleaf School of Business in Atlanta. She was
a member of Jackson Board of Realtors, St. Richard Catholic Church and the Alpha
Association of Mississippi.
Survivors include her husband, Ken Goodwin, a professional engineer with the
Mississippi Department of Transportation; a daughter, Lynn Coit of Denver, Colo.; sons
John Goodwin and Patrick Goodwin of Jackson; mother, Loretta Smith of Jackson; a
brother, Joe Smith of Orleans, France; and a sister, Eugenia Evans of Charleston, S.C.
The funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, from St. Richard's Catholic
Church with burial in the Parkway Memorial Cemetery.

Robert Q. Barton
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Robert Q. Bobby Barton, 74, of Roanoke were
Sunday, Oct. 22, 1995, at 3 p.m. at Roanoke Church of Christ, with Bro. Gerald Romine
and Bro. Sam Carpenter officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mr. Barton died Friday, Oct. 20, at his home.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Barton was born in Wedowee on May 24, 1921, son
of John Jefferson Barton, Sr., and Winnie Hill Barton. He was a World War II veteran of
the Marine Corps and had worked as a repair foreman with Transco until his retirement in
1986. He lived in Wadley 26 years before moving to Roanoke in 1983. He was a member
of Roanoke Church of Christ, Roanoke Kiwanis Club and Sons of the Confederacy.
Survivors include his wife, Winifred Head Barton of Roanoke; a daughter, Lisa H.
Barton of Montgomery; two sons, Robert Q. Barton, Jr., and John Elton Barton of New
Market; one sister, Margaret Pate of Phenix City; one brother, John Jefferson Barton, Jr.,
of Clovis, Calif.; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Frank Dunson
(ROANOKE) Charles Frank Dunson, Jr., 47, of Roanoke died Friday, Oct. 20, 1995,
at his sister's residence after an extended illness.
Services were at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at First Baptist Church, Riley Street, with
the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating. Burial was in Wehadkee Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Erica Dunson of Welch; two sisters, Ms. Barbara
D. Johnson and Mrs. Debra D. Royston of Roanoke; two brothers, James Dunson of
LaGrange, Ga., and LeRoy Dunson of Roanoke; a special cousin, Ms. Dolly Swanagan of
Roanoke; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Dunson, a native of Roanoke, was born June 3, 1948, to the late Charles Frank
Dunson, Sr., and Fanny Mary (Jenkins) Dunson. He attended Randolph County Training
School in Roanoke, but later became one of the first African-Americans to graduate from
Handley High School in Roanoke. Mr. Dunson was a member of First Baptist Church,
where he served as Sunday school superintendent and church clerk. He attended
Morehouse College in Atlanta and was a former employee of Liberty National Life
Insurance Company, National Life, Dixie Finance, and Mutual Savings Life Insurance
Company. Mr. Dunson was active in the Randolph County branch of the N.A.A.C.P.,
serving for several years as branch secretary and as chairperson for the Economic
Development Committee.

Willie E. Linton
(ROANOKE) Memorial services for Willie E. Linton, 48, of Roanoke, who died
Tuesday, Oct. 17, 1995, at his residence, were Saturday, Oct. 21, at 2:30 p.m. from
the Galley Restaurant in Roanoke.
Mr. Linton was born in Red Bay, Fla., son of the late Ezia D. Linton, and Ethel D.
Gainey. He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Linton. He came to the Randolph
County area five years ago and was an employee at Plantation Patterns until declining
health limited his activities.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Doris Virginia Linton of Roanoke; one sister, Mrs.
June Javin of Pensacola, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law and one
sister-in-law.
Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service of Roanoke.

Velma T. Morrison
(OXFORD) Services for Velma T. Morrison, 91, of Oxford, were Friday, Oct. 13,
1995, at 2 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church with the Revs. Oscar Cotton and Theron
Williams officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Miller Funeral Home of
Oxford in charge.
Mrs. Morrison died Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. at Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Dot Albright of Oxford and Juliette
Judy Cockrell of Alabaster; nine sons, Tom Morrison of Sylacauga, Bill Morrison of
Pensacola, Fla., Jack Morrison of Weaver, Willis Morrison of Panama City Fla., Fred
Morrison of Delta, Byron Morrison of Roanoke, Wendell Morrison and Truman
Morrison, both of Wedowee, and George Morrison of Wadley; two sister, Vera Murphy
and Vester Murphy, both of Heflin; three brothers, Clifford Williams and Griffin Williams,
both of Oxford, and Theron Williams of Anniston; 38 grandchildren and 42 great-
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. A. Morrison; two sons, Milford
Morrison and Billy Joe Morrison; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren.
A Randolph County native, Mrs. Morrison had lived in Oxford for the past two years.
She was a member of the Folsom Senior Citizens Group and a member of Corinth Baptist
Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Corinth Cemetery
Fund or to a favorite charity.

Carl Johnson
(WADLEY) Carl Johnson, 61, of Wadley died Monday, Oct. 16, 1995, at the Veterans
Administration Medical Center in Birmingham.
Mr. Johnson, a native of Chambers County, was a navy veteran of the Korean War and
had been an office manager for the Social Security Administration. He was a member of
the First Baptist Church of Opelika.
Survivors include his six children, Angelia Hunt of Olympia, Wash., Joy Strahl of
Jacksonville, N.C., Meri Cole of Montgomery, Debi Adams of Boaz, Steven Johnson of
Albany, Ga., and Sara Farrow of Greenville, N.C.; one sister, Sara Ann Scott of Lanett;
one brother, Neil Johnson of Travelers Rest, S.C.; and eight grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Johnson were Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. from Sanders Funeral
Home in LaFayette with the Rev. Wallace Roberts officiating. Interment was in the
cemetery at Darian Primitive Baptist Church.

James T. Houze
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for James T. Houze, 82, of Roanoke were Sunday,
Oct. 22, 1995, at 3 p.m. from Springfield Baptist Church, with the Revs. Roger Woodard,
Lendon Fields and David Haag officiating. Burial was at Forest Home Christian Church
Cemetery.
Mr. Houze died suddenly Saturday, Oct. 21, at his home.
A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, he was born April 11, 1913, son of
John Henry and Sallie Wood Houze. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air
Corps. He had worked with West Point Pepperell and served as a deacon at Springfield
Baptist Church. His wife, Elsie Lamb Houze, and a son, James E. Houze, preceded him in
death.
Survivors include three daughters, Brenda H. Weathers and Pamela H. Mangram, both
of Roanoke, and Elaine H. Harry of Prattville; a daughter-in-law, Marcia C. Houze of
Alabaster; one sister, Ola Muldrew of Roanoke; nine grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Morgan B. Waldrep
(WADLEY) Morgan B. Waldrep, 69, of Rt. 1, Wadley, died Monday, Oct. 23, 1995,
in East Alabama Regional Medical Center, Opelika, after a short illness.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Macedonia Baptist
Church, with the Revs. Zenus Windsor and Larry Cosper officiating.
Mr. Waldrep is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Waldrep of Wadley, and one son,
Randy Waldrep of Birmingham.
Mr. Waldrep was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was a member
of Macedonia Baptist Church and was retired as a farmer.
Mr. Waldrep will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, until time for
services.

Mae [Newberry] Dobson
(WEDOWEE) Mae Dobson, 79, of Wedowee died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 1995, at her
residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at First Baptist Church of
Wedowee, with Rev. John Duncan and Dr. Harris Hand officiating. Burial will follow in
Wedowee City Cemetery.
Mrs. Dobson is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Charles Camp of Wedowee;
one son, Dr. Carl Weathers Dobson, Jr., of Bowling Green, Ky.; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Tim Coe, Tom Lumpkin, Buster Fincher, Dick Israel, Jerry Brazeal,
Sr., Ricky Daniel, Benny Camp, Danny Wilson and Barry Wilson. Honorary pallbearers
will be Charlie Will Thompson, Bob Perry, John R. LeSueur, Bernard Austin, Tom
Burnside, John Seegar, Blake Gross, Herman Landers, Vernon Lipham and Dr. W. D.
Israel.
Mrs. Dobson was a native of Camden[, born Sept. 13, 1916]. She graduated from
Alabama State College for Women (University of Montevallo) in 1938 and did graduate
work at the University of Chicago. In 1939 she came to Wedowee as a child welfare
worker and retired as director in 1975. She was also a teacher at Randolph County High
School for a number of years. She was a member of the WMU and Children's Sunday
School Class teacher at First Baptist Church of Wedowee. She was a member and past
president of the Women's Study Club of Wedowee. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Carl Weathers Pete Dobson, Sr.
Mrs. Dobson will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, and the family will
receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Dobson will lie in
state at the church for one hour prior to funeral services.
