Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Fernwood Cemetery in Bridgeton, N.J., with the Rev. J. Kenneth Corson officiating. Mrs. Hamann was born Aug. 20, 1907, in North Port Norris, N.J., daughter of Maurice Horner and Kate Robinson Sharp Sockwell. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church in Hialcah, Fla., where she resided for 20 years prior to living her last years in Wedowee. She was preceded in death by husbands Joseph H. Corson and Raymond Hamann. Survivors include one daughter, Valerie Corson duBois of Wayside, N.J., one son, Rev. J. Kenneth Corson of Wedowee; one sister, Ruth Saul of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one niece. Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, and Padgett Funeral Home, Bridgeton, are in charge of arrangements. __________ Rebecca Steele Hammonds (ANNISTON) Services for Rebecca Steele Hammonds, 50, of Anniston were Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Weaver, with Dr. Roger Wilmore and the Rev. Herman Pair officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Hammonds died Saturday at Jacksonville Hospital. Survivors include her husband Mike Hammonds of Anniston; parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Jesse Steele of Anniston; and a brother, David Steele of Columbus, Ga. Pallbearers were Charles Price, Bobby Hendricks, Kenneth Page, Terry Brown, Greg Brown, Andy Weems, Pete Haynes, John Cassell and Johnny Wasser. Mrs. Hammonds was a native of Alabama and was a resident of Calhoun County for the past 29 years. Previously she had lived in Roanoke and attended Handley High School. She was retired from the Chemical School at Fort McClellan. She was a well-known musician and a member of First Baptist Church of Weaver, where she served as a pianist for 20 years. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Weaver Building Fund. __________ Harold W. 'Smitty' Smith (CHEHALIS, Wash.) Harold W. "Smitty" Smith, 75, of Chehalis, Wash., died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia, Wash., of heart failure. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Wood and Welch Smith. Harold was born Nov. 28, 1922, in Roanoke, Ala., to William M. and Dicie E. Wood Smith. He graduated from Handley High School in 1941 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy Aircorps, serving 10 1/2 years. Harold worked for Sears for 20 years, the last five in Chehalis as assistant manager, owned and operated a golf course for eight years in Eugene, Ore., and was business manager at Northwest Christian College in Eugene for 11 years. He was a 24-year member of Rotary International and was very proud of his 20 years of perfect attendance. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Bobbie; two daughter[s], Dr. Linda K. Smith and Carolee Forsyth; a son, Rick Smith, all of Chehalis; a sister, Ann Odiorne of Littleton, Colo.; three granddaughters and one great-grandson. Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Wedowee, with the Rev. Bob Karcher and the Rev. Don Parrish officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery. A Lawrenceburg, Tenn., native, he was born Sept. 27, 1919, son of Jim J. and Elma Fincher Moses. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was retired for the U.S. Navy and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wedowee. Survivors include his wife, Eloree Moses of Wedowee; two sisters, Mary Durrett of Galveston, Texas, and Mildred Noles of Corpus Christi, Texas; two brothers, Fred Moses of Pensacola, Fla., and Jimmy Moses of Sun City, Fla.; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was a loyal member of Langdale Congregational Christian Church and an active member in the Gold Star Sunday School Class and the C. C. Seniors. Mrs. Crawford had retired from West Point Pepperell. Survivors include a daughter, Ann C. Hodges of Valley; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Crawford was the widow of the late William L. "Bill Joe" Crawford. Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Wedowee with the Rev. Don Paris officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born July 14, 1911, son of Lewis and Armanda Steward Haynes. He was the former owner of Haynes Motor Company, a former city councilman in Wedowee, a member of the Wedowee Hospital Board, a member of Sawyer Lodge #93 F&AM of Wedowee, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Wedowee, the Randolph County Cattleman's Association, and a member of First Baptist Church of Wedowee. He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Haynes. Survivors include his wife, Clois Haynes of Wedowee; one daughter, Linda Green of Roanoke; three brothers, Pascal Haynes of Athens, Ga., D. L. Haynes of Webb and Ennis Haynes of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stafford was a native of Randolph County, born Sept. 5, 1905. She was a homemaker and a former employee at Dunson Mill in LaGrange, Ga. Staff Sgt. Jennifer Nelson McGill, 27, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at her home in Hampton, Va. Mrs. McGill was born Dec. 11, 1970, in Pierson, Fla., where she attended Taylor High School. She entered the U.S. Air Force in 1991. Her first assignment was to Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., where she met and married Staff Sgt. Robert McGill in 1992. The[y] were reassigned to Langley AFB, Va., in 1996. Survivors include her husband, Robert McGill; daughter, Taylor; son, Riley; mother, Marilyn Nelson of Holly Hill, Fla.; father, William Nelson of Pierson; sister, Jessica Nelson of Holly Hill; brother, Aaron Nelson of Holly Hill; and mother-and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis V. McGill of Wadley. A memorial service was held Monday, Sept. 28, at 3 p.m. at Langley Chapel, Langley AFB. Chaplin [sic] Rick Montoya officiated. Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at West Broad Street Church of Christ in Wedowee with Bro. Harry Cobb officiating. Burial followed in Wedowee City Cemetery. Mr. Holloway was a native of Randolph County, born April 2, 1902, son of Dave and Emmie Boggs Holloway. He was retired from Callaway Mills and was a member of West Broad Street Church of Christ in Wedowee. He was preceded in death by two sons, Ray Holloway and Bobby Holloway, and his wife, Dennie Holloway. Survivors include one son, Harold R. Holloway of Wedowee; three brothers, C. L. Holloway of Pensacola, Fla., Lawrence Holloway of Jackson, Miss., and David Holloway of California; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild. Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of arrangements. __________ William Yancey 'Red' Chewning (MILTON, Fla.) William Yancey "Red" Chewning, 91, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998. Mr. Chewning served as a member of the Alabama State Legislature for four years and held the office of tax collector of Randolph County for 10 years. After employment at the Brecon Powder Plant, he served a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy. Among other endeavors, he taught at the Veterans' Administration School for Servicemen, was director of the Meals-on-Wheels program, was administrator of Randolph County Hospital and at one time was co-owner of Whiting Furniture Company. He was a member of the Masonic Order, the Woodmen of the World, the VFW and the American Legion. Mr. Chewning held many positions in the Methodist Church. He was the son of Will and Sarah Moon Chewning and was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, and their son, William Yancey Jr. His presence will be greatly missed by those he left behind: two daughters, Frankie Chewning Van Horn of Cantonment, Fla., and Sara Chewning Harman of Milton, Fla.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Carson died Friday, Oct. 16, at National Health Care in Anniston. A lifelong resident of Wadley, Mr. Carson was born Feb. 18, 1923, son of John William and Emma Beatrice Britt Carson. He was a World War II Army veteran, a member of Forrester's Chapel Methodist Church, and had retired from Transco. His wife, Dorothy Lela Carson, preceded him in death. Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Clegg of Wadley; three sons, Gerson Carson and George Carson of Wadley and Wyatt Carson of Woodland; two sisters, Madge Knight of Woodland and Anna Ruth Harris of Roanoke; one brother, Frank Carson of Wadley; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. His wife, Gladys Lourene Wilder Bassett, preceded him in death. She was employed by Handley Mills and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Survivors include one step-son, James Red Taylor of Roanoke; one sister, Thelma Whiddon of Asburn, Ga.; and one brother, Orland Jim Hester of Graham. James Duke officiating. Burial will follow in Wadley City Cemetery. Mr. Moore died Oct. 26 at Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta. He was born Aug. 26, 1980, in Troup County, Ga., son of Charles and Kathryn Whaley Moore. He was a senior at Alabama School for the Blind in Talladega and a member of Abanda United Methodist Church. Survivors include his parents, Charles and Kathryn Whaley Moore of Wadley, and grandparents, Neil [sic - Nell] Whaley and Lavada Moore, both of Wadley. The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 3:30 until 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28. Mr. Moore will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke. __________ Carolyn Audrey Taylor Carr (AUBURN) Carolyn Audrey Taylor Carr, 86, believed to be the first woman to graduate in chemistry at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), died Monday evening at her home on Payne Street in Auburn. The funeral will be at Auburn United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. at the church. Mrs. Carr was born Aug. 12, 1912, in the Green's Chapel community near Wedowee. She was the daughter of William Ellis and Vistula Aiken Ware Taylor and the granddaughter of Zachry and Sarah Jane Wilf Taylor and of James Andrew and Sarah Frances Hester Ware. After graduating from Randolph County High School in Wedowee, Mrs. Carr raised chickens for several years to raise money to attend college. She received her B.S. in chemistry in 1937, where she was a member of Cardinal Key (Mortar Board) honor society, and her M.S. in biochemistry from Emory in 1939. Mrs. Carr married Dr. Howard Earl Carr in 1939. She worked in research at the University of Virginia Medical School and at Auburn University before devoting her time solely to her family and community. She served as president of the Auburn P.T.A., the Campus Club and Chapter E. of the P.E.O. She also held several state offices in the P.E.O. She was a life-long member of the Auburn United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women. In addition, she was a leader in both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Howard E. Carr, Jr. of Atlanta and Carolyn Ann Carr of Auburn; two grandchildren; a sister, Myrtie T. Minter of Waverly; a brother, Col. Elbert R. Taylor of Phenix City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Sigma Xi Honor Society for the Carolyn Taylor Carr Outstanding Research Award or the Howard Earl and Carolyn Taylor Carr Endowed Professorship in the Department of Physics, both at Auburn University. __________ Lewis Monroe Brown (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Lewis Monroe Brown, 86, of Woodland were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at Mount Carmel Church of Christ with Bro. Ricky Murphy officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Brown died Thursday, Oct. 22, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga., following an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Aug. 15, 1912, son of John Wesley and Purdy Noles Brown. He had been employed as a bus driver and was a member of Mount Carmel Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Eura Crenshaw Brown of Woodland; three daughters, Joyce Edmondson and Elaine Lovvorn of Bowdon, Ga., and Yvonne Rampy of Woodland; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Pledger Gordon Prince, 78, of Jacksonville, FL, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct 29, 1998, at [West] Napoleon Church of Christ, with Evangelist Lynwood Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Prince died Oct. 26 in Jacksonville following a lengthy illness. He was born March 24, 1920, in Randolph County, AL. He was retired from the City of Jacksonville and was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Jacksonville Gospel Singers Association, and an elder with Cedarhurst Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Flora J. Prince of Jacksonville; two sons, Steven Prince of Wedowee and Phillip Prince of Jacksonville; one daughter, Lynn Sessions; one brother, Calvin Prince of Woodland; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Pearl Mann of Wedowee and Mrs. Vivian Rowe of LaGrange, GA; five granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Lovvorn was a native of Randolph County, the son of the late Arthur Lovvorn and Lummie Lowe Lovvorn. Until his retirement, he was employed with Bremen-Bowdon Investment Co. for more than 49 years. He was a member of Five Points Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Timmie Lovvorn. Survivors include his wife, Alma Entrekin Lovvorn; daughter, Kaye Ferguson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; son Donnie Lovvorn of Albany, Ga., and one grandchild and two great-grandchildren; step-sons, Charles William Liles of Anchorage, Alaska, and Frankie Lee Liles of Wadley; sisters, Mrs. Nina McLendon and Mrs. Jane Lambert of Bowdon, Ga., and Mrs. Ura Harris of Anniston; and a brother, Howard Lovvorn of Anniston. Jessie Gay Janney, 82, of Roopville, Ga., died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at her residence. Mrs. Janney was born Sept. 30, 1916, in Randolph County, Ala., daughter of the late Delbert and Irene Webb Gay. She was retired as a seamstress from Bremen-Bowdon Investment Company and was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church in Randolph County. Survivors include her husband, O. D. Janney of Roopville; two sons, Harold Janney and Otis Gay Janney of Bowdon, Ga.; a brother, Bird Gay of LaGrange, Ga.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Ephesus Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gerald Rogers and the Rev. Fred Cooke officiating. Burial will be in the Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
