OBITUARIES:

Joan McKay Head

   (ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for Joan McKay Head, 66, of Rock Mills and 
Riverdale, Ga., were at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, 
with the Rev. Ricky Emery officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Head died Tuesday, May 30, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Head was born July 21, 1933, daughter of Abe and 
Sallie Brown McKay.  She was a homemaker and a Baptist.  She was preceded in death by 
her husband, Junior Head, a son, Phillip Alan Head, and two daughters, Caren and 
Carmon Head.
   Survivors include a son, Charles M. Beverly Head of Stockbridge, Ga.; a brother, Roy 
McKay of Marietta, Ga., and two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were nephews.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Calvin Lanier 'Jack' Colley

   (PORT HADLOCK, Wash.) Lt. Col. Calvin Lanier "Jack" Cooley died May 16, 2000 
after a long battle with heart disease.
   Born in 1929 in Wadley, he acquired the nickname Jack upon joining the U.S. Army at 
the age of 17.  He served as a private with the occupation forces at the end of World War 
II.  After completing college and R.O.T.C., he re-entered the Army as an officer, serving 
as a forward observer in the Korean War.  He then served in Japan as a military instructor, 
helping to retrain the newly formed Japanese forces, and later had two separate tours in 
Germany and assignments in Kentucky, Texas and Oklahoma.  He returned to Korea as a 
battalion commander and ended his career as inspector general at Fort Benjamin Harrison.  
He also drove race cars for Porsche in Germany, cattle ranched in Oklahoma and Costa 
Rica, and did commercial fishing in Alaska and Washington.  At the age of 65 Jack 
completed the Four Corners Motorcycle Race (10,400 miles) in 20 days.  In 1974 he 
married Edith Erickson Stewart of Anchorage, Alaska, and together they toured Europe, 
the Orient, New Zealand and Australia.
   Col. Colley is survived by his wife, Edith Erickson Colley; his sister, Jewel Mason; his 
brother, Bill Colley; his children and their families, James Colley, Roger and Evelyn 
Colley, Ray Colley, Monika and Donald Hatmaker and Sheila Stewart McLean and 
Michael McLean, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   He was buried with full military honors at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Wash.

Mattie Joyce Copestick

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mattie Joyce Copestick, 61, of Roanoke, formerly of 
Jacksonville, Fla., were Saturday, June 3, 2000 at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the 
Rev. Gary Baugh officiating.  Burial was at Rock Mills Cemetery.
   Mrs. Copestick died Thursday, June 1, at George H. Lanier Hospital in Valley.
   A native of Lanett, Mrs. Copestick was born Nov. 30, 1938, daughter of William Olen 
and Ida Bell Mitchum Armstrong.  She was a member of Handley Avenue Church of God.  
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Copestick Sr.; her mother, Ida Bell 
Armstrong; and a sister, Janice Smith.
   Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Moore of Roanoke; one son, Raymond Drew 
Cochran of Jacksonville, Fla., two-step daughters, Vicki Windsor and Karen Moore of 
Roanoke; one step-son, George Copestick Jr. of Richmond, Va.; her father, William Olin 
Armstrong of Wadley; five brothers, Bill Armstrong of Spokane, Wash., Ben Armstrong 
and Richard Armstrong of Jacksonville, Fla., Chris Armstrong of Huguley and Robert 
Armstrong of Wadley; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Alan Moore, Brandon Moore, Chad Moore, Jerry Windsor, Randy 
Moore, Rodney Mitchum, Raymond Drew Cochran and Robert Armstrong.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Joyce Copestick Memorial Fund, 
Handley Avenue Church of God (c/o 332 Fincher Road, Roanoke, AL 36274.)

William DeVaughn 'Kudzu' Landers

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for William Devaughn "Kudzu" Landers, 89, of Roanoke 
were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Gary Baugh officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Landers died Sunday, June 4, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born in Chambers County on Nov. 6, 
1910, son of John and Bessie Lee Landers.  He had been employed as a dispatcher and 
officer with the Roanoke Police Department.  He was a Baptist.
   Survivors include three sisters, Glenis Mann, Dovie Bice and Lamerle Mann, all of 
LaGrange, Ga., and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were members of the Roanoke Police Department.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Cordie Mae Wilson Kirby

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Cordie Mae Wilson Kirby, 95, of Wedowee will be 
at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at Wedowee Church of Christ, with Brothers Wilbur 
Bass and Ricky Murphy officiating.  Burial will be in Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Kirby died Tuesday, June 6, at her residence.
   She was born in Randolph County on Nov. 20, 1904, daughter of Clint and Mattie 
Yates Wilson.  She was a homemaker, a charter member of the New Hope Community 
Club, and a member of Wedowee Home Demonstration Club and Oak Grove Church of 
Christ.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Soloman Charlie Kirby.
   Survivors include two daughters, Sue Cosper of Gadsden and Sandra Brown of Fortsen, 
Ga.; three sons, Harlice Kirby of Wetumpka, Bruce Kirby of Wedowee and Don Kirby of 
Nashville; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Memorial contributions may be floral or donations can be made to Chattahoochee 
Hospice, #6 Medical Park N., Valley, AL 36854.
   Pallbearers will be Bill Wilson, Jim Tom Willingham, Murphy Burgess, Mike Strain, 
Gary McManus and Lloyd Stewart.  Honorary pallbearers will be Blake Gross, Earl Smith 
and Buck Earnest.

Letha W. Haynes

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Letha W. Haynes, 83, of Roanoke were Monday, 
June 5, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Bobby Jones 
officiating.  Burial was at Liberty Grove Methodist Church cemetery.
   Mrs. Haynes died Saturday, June 3, at Brian Center in LaGrange, Ga., after an
 extended illness.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Haynes was born July 16, 1916, daughter of Joseph 
Oliver and Electa Ophelia Wilson Wilder.  She was a homemaker and a member of Liberty 
Grove Methodist Church.
   She is survived by one sister, Marcelle Fincher of LaGrange.
   Pallbearers were David Parker, James Canady, Hugh Benefield, Eddie Cosper, Al 
Haynes and Woody Wilder.

OBITUARIES:

Bernice Benedict

   (GRAND HAVEN, Mich.) Bernice Benedict, 78, of Grand Haven, Mich., died 
Saturday, May 27, 2000, in Muskegon, Mich.
   She was born Feb. 27, 1922, to Lilton Rudy and Ara Thompson Calhoun in Randolph 
County, Ala.  Mrs. Benedict was a retired waitress and was a member of Gospel Chapel in 
Grand Haven.
   She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Heidman of Dallas, Texas, and Barbara 
Molyneux of Muskegon; five grandchildren and seven great-granchildren; two sisters, 
Doris Windsor of Roanoke and Shelvie Givorns of Lanett; and two brothers, Billy Harold 
Calhoun of Roanoke and David "Pete" Calhoun of Dewey, Okla.  She was preceded in 
death by her sister, Lillis Calhoun.
   Funeral services for Mrs. Benedict were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, at 
VanZantwick, Bartels, Kammeraad Chapel in Grand Haven.  Interment followed in Lake 
Forest Cemetery.
   Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
   Arrangements were by VanZantwick, Bartels, Kammeraad in Grand Haven.

Persilar Dean Gann

   (HEFLIN) Funeral services for Mrs. Persilar Dean Gann, 59, of Heflin were at 2 p.m. 
Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with George Gann and Carlos 
Gentry officiating.  Burial was at Pinetucky Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Gann died Thursday, June 8, at her residence.
   She was born in Calhoun County on Feb. 5, 1941, daughter of George and Bertha Mae 
Hayes Achran.  She was a homemaker.
   Survivors include her husband, David Gann of Heflin; a daughter, Sharon Pointer of 
White Plains; four sons, Donnie Gann and Glen Gann of Heflin, Jim Mitchell of Boiling 
Springs, and Kenneth Gann of Woodland; two sisters, Alice Biddy of Piedmont and 
Georgia Mae Pointer of Munford; three brothers, James Pointer and Jerry Pointer of 
Lincoln, and Junior Pointer of White Plains; two step-children, Billy Daniels of Heflin and 
Sarah Teague of Ranburne; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and 
four step-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jason Boyd, David Franklin, Mark Bowen, Joshua Newborn, Jason 
Zimmer and Corey Whaley.

Myrtle Will Sharman

   (ROCK MILLS) Graveside services for Myrtle Will Sharman, 89, of Rock Mills were 
Saturday, June 10, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens, with the Revs. Lamar 
Davis and James Harper officiating.
   Mrs. Sherman (sic) died Thursday, June 8, at Roanoke Health Care.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Sharman, was born Nov. 7, 1910, daughter of William 
Allen and Emma Cass Birdsong Bailey.  She was a member of Rock Mills Methodist 
Church and had been employed with the Palm Beach Company.  Survivors include a 
daughter-in-law, Nelda Sharman, a grandson, Tommy Sharman, and two great-
grandchildren all of LaGrange; and one sister, Elsie Carden of Roanoke.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Albert M. Moncus

   (LINEVILLE) Graveside funeral services for Albert M. Moncus, 94, of Lineville, 
formerly of Wadley, will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Pleasant Hill 
Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Joe Mallory officiating.
   Mr. Moncus died Monday, June 12, at Clay County Hospital in Ashland.
   He was born in Randolph County on May 12, 1906, son of Mack and Beulah Wilkinson 
Moncus.  He had been employed as a steel worker and was a member of Almond 
Methodist Church.  He was preceded in death by two wives, Myrtle Clegg Moncus and 
Ethel Bond Moncus.
   Survivors include nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Claude Willis Blackmon

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Claude Willis Blackmon, 89, of LaGrange, Ga., formerly of 
Roanoke, died June 8, 2000, at his home.
   Mr. Blackmon was born Feb. 17, 1911, in Campbell County, Ga.  He was a retired 
farmer and automobile mechanic at Westbrook Chrysler-Plymouth.  He had lived in 
LaGrange since 1958 and was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Woodland.
   Survivors include his wife, Willie Spradlin Blackmon of LaGrange; a daughter, Martha 
Hicks of Leeds; a son, Joel Blackmon of Woodland; and two grandsons.
   Funeral services were Saturday, June 10, at Hunter-Allen-Myyand [sic] Funeral Home, 
with Pastor Clayton Scott officiating.  Burial was in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, 
Woodland.

James Huey O'Neal

   (WEDOWEE) James Huey O'Neal, 58, of Wedowee died Friday, June 9, 2000, near 
Wadley as the result of a drowning incident.
   Funeral services were Tuesday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with minister Calvin Trammell officiating.  Burial was in Friendship Baptist 
Church Cemetery.
   Survivors include three sisters, Mary Rogers of Chicago, Ill., Bernice Marable of 
Tuskegee and Erma Simon of Atlanta, Ga.; four brothers, William M. Houston and Ernest 
O'Neal of Roanoke, and James I. O'Neal and Lawrence O'Neal of Wedowee; and a host of 
loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  Mr. O'Neal was preceded in death by 
his mother, Pearlie Lee Davenport O'Neal; his father James Isom O'Neal; two sisters and 
one brother.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Helen L. Prather

  (LANETT) Helen L. Prather, 81, of Lanett died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Beverly 
Health Care in Lanett.
   Mrs. Prather was born Dec. 28, 1918, in Alexander City, daughter of the late Irene 
Duncan Blankenship and Fred A. Blankenship.  She was a former employee of West Point 
Pepperell's Lanett Mill and a member of Northside Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Prather is survived by a son, Jimmy L. Meadows of Lanett; a sister, Mary 
Shoemaker of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, J. L. Blankenship of Atlanta, Ga.; a step- 
daughter, Lilian Canter of Dallas; a stepson, Arthur Lee Prather of Roanoke; four step- 
grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren; an aunt and several nieces and nephews.
   Graveside services were at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Reeds Chapel Church Cemetery 
in West Point, with the Rev. Eugene Striblin officiating.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Edith Hand Edmondson

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Edith Hand Edmondson, 79, of Roanoke were at 
2 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Gene 
Young officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Edmondson died Wednesday, June 14, at Wedowee Hospital.
   She was born in Randolph County on Sept. 10, 1920.  She had been employed as a 
supervisor at Playtex Sewing Plant, and was a member of Southside Baptist Church.  She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Bunion Edmondson.
   Survivors include a son, Tim Edmondson of Roanoke; a brother, Robert Hand of 
Acworth, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Derek Edmondson, Justin Henry, Josh Henry, David Jeter, Wallace 
Glass and Mike Brown.  
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

James Ray Yates

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for James Ray Yates, 65, of Woodland were at 2 p.m. 
Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Providence Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Daniel and 
the Rev. Ridley Herren officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Yates died Thursday, June 15, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.
   He was born in Randolph County on Aug. 22, 1934, son of Lester W. and Edna Daniel 
Yates.  He was employed by Dunn Scrap Metal and was a member of Providence Baptist 
Church.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice McManus and three brothers, 
Esker Yates, Lowell Yates and Billy Yates.
   Survivors include his wife, Rene H. Yates of Woodland; a daughter, Debra Yates 
Gosdin of Heflin; a sister, Lucille Brady of Anniston; two brothers, Lawrence Yates and 
Roy Lee Yates, both of Woodland; and a grandson.
   Pallbearers were Thomas Green, Dale Dye, Gerald McCord, Jeremy Yates, Stephen 
Vaughn, Michael Crenshaw, Steve Cantrell and Sam Arrington.

Hazel C. Nelson

   (MONTGOMERY) Hazel C. Nelson, 84, of Montgomery died Friday, June 16, 2000, at 
Jackson Hospital in Montgomery.
   Mrs. Nelson was born in Randolph County April 26, 1916, daughter of the late Walter 
B. Carden and Ida Bartlett Carden.  She was a member of Antioch Christian Church.
   Graveside services were Saturday, June 17, at 3 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church 
Cemetery in the Double Head community, with the Rev. Maynard McGinty officiating.
   Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. A. C. Nelson.  She is 
survived by a special cousin, Dot Mitcham of Auburn, and a host of other cousins.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

S. C. Thomas

   (WADLEY) S. C. Thomas, 89, of Wadley died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Russell 
Medical Center, Alexander City.
   Funeral services were at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Wadley, on Saturday, June 17, 
at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Cornelius Reese officiating.
   Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Esther Thomas of Wadley; six sons, Clarence 
Thomas of LaFayette, Reggie Thomas of Wadley, Merrill Thomas of Alexander City, 
Darryl Thomas of Daviston and Leroy Thomas and Cozell Thomas of Lineville; five 
daughters, Sandra Thomas of Alexander City, Lesa Anderson of Daviston, Lurlene Lodar 
of Birmingham, Julie Mae McClain of Lineville and Laurel Mae Cleming of Penton; two 
sisters, Elanor Thomas and Lizzie Street of Pell City; one brother, Fate Thomas of 
Decatur, Ga.; 50 grandchildren; 80 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and 
a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Price M. Carter

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Price M. Carter, 84, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Monday, June 19, 2000, at Midway United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Wayne 
Jetton officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Carter died Saturday, June 17, at his residence following an extended illness.
   He was born in Clay County on Sept. 11, 1915, son of Mack and Annie Pearl Tinkle 
Carter.  He was employed with West Point Stevens and had a clock and watch repair shop 
in his home.  He was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church.  He was preceded in 
death by his wife, Elva Gay Carter.
   Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Carter Harris of Lanett; two sons, Price J. Carter 
and James M. Carter of Roanoke; a sister, Elsie Hunt of Nashville, Tenn.; seven 
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Chucky Potts, Preston Story, Curtis Foster, Frankie Dewberry, 
Billy Dewberry, Robby Hill, Kelly Baker and Keith Langley.

Estelline Chaffin Ballard

   (VALLEY) Funeral services for Estelline Chaffin Ballard, 81, of Valley were at 2 p.m. 
Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at Liberty Grove Congregational Methodist Church in 
Woodland, with the Rev. Bobby Jones officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Ballard died Sunday, June 18, at Lanier Memorial Nursing Home in Valley 
following an extended illness.
   She was born in Randolph County on Aug. 15, 1918, daughter of Pete and Lena Wilson 
Chaffin.  She was employed with West Point Pepperell Mills and was a member of Fairfax 
United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Ballard.
   Survivors include a son, James Chaffin Ballard of Ellerslie, Ga.; a brother, J. O. Chaffin 
of Oxford; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Pallbearers were family members.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Mary Adamson Bell

   (CLEVELAND, Ohio) Mary Adamson Bell, 63, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of 
Roanoke, died May 18, 2000, at Cityview Nursing Home in Cleveland.
   Ms. Bell was born April 29, 1937, in Roanoke.  She worked at Candlewick Yarns for 
over 16 years.  She was a member of Wehakee (sic) Baptist Church, Roanoke.
   Survivors include one son, Reginald Bell of Cleveland; a loving and devoted sister-in- 
law and dear friend, Dorothy G. Adamson of Cleveland; one brother, Thomas Adamson of 
Anniston; one sister, Lurina Haynes of Opelika; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were Thursday, May 25, at Nesbitt Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Lillian Hurley Hallmark

   (MCDONOUGH, Ga.) Lillian Hurley Hallmark, 77, of McDonough, Ga., a native of 
Randolph County, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Henry Medical Center after an 
extended illness.
   Survivors include two daughters, Linda Warnock of Smyrna, Ga., and Wanda Hughes of 
McDonough; two sisters, Dorothy Alwine of Fairburn, Ga., and Lois Holloway of 
Wedowee; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services for Mrs. Hallmark were Friday, June 16, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of 
Haisten Funeral Home.  Interment was at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in McDonough, 
with the Rev. Keith Archibald officiating.

Roger Lee Baldwin

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Roger Lee Baldwin, 57, of Roanoke were at 10 a.m. 
Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Highway First Congregational Methodist Church, with the 
Rev. Wayne Jetton officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mr. Baldwin died suddenly at Wedowee Hospital on Tuesday, June 20.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born July 7, 1942, son of Earnest and 
Cora Madden Baldwin.  He was an insurance salesman with Mutual Savings Insurance and 
was a Methodist.
   Survivors include his wife, Gaynell Baldwin of Roanoke; a daughter, Darla Hayes of 
Roanoke; a son, Darin Baldwin of Roanoke; two sisters, Jettie Veal and Janell Moon of 
Roanoke; three brothers, Curtis Baldwin, Vertis Baldwin and Richard Baldwin of 
Roanoke; and two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were nephews.

   (GRAHAM) Funeral services for Mary Jim Perry, 85, of Graham were at 11 a.m. EDT 
on Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Campground Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kit Carson 
and Leroy Shaw officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Perry died Thursday, June 22, at Lineville Nursing Facility in Lineville.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born April 11, 1915, daughter of 
Charles Wesley and Kate Perry Noel.  She had been employed at Lamar Manufacturing 
and was a member of Campground Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Loyd Owen Perry.
   Survivors include two daughters, Julia Jeanette Barrow of Atlanta and Jo Anne Lovvorn 
of Graham; a son, James Perry of Carrollton, Ga.; six grandchildren, five great- 
grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Hazel D. Martin

   (LANETT) Hazel D. Martin, 73, of Lanett died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Mrs. Martin was born in Randolph County Dec. 15, 1926, daughter of the late Emma 
Adamson Dollar and the late Rev. John Dollar.  She was a homemaker and a member of 
Lanett Congregational Christian Church.
   Survivors include three sons, Joel Martin of LaGrange, Ga., Jeff Martin of Lanett and 
Fred Hamby of Wadley; a daughter, Janice Weiner of Valley; a sister, Lois Harry of 
Lanett; a brother, Milford Dollar of Valley; seven grandchildren and four great- 
grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at Lanett Congregational Christian Church at 11 a.m. EDT on 
Tuesday, June 27, with the Rev. Roy Bain officiating.  Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery.
   Donations may be made to Lanett Congregational Christian Church in her memory.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

James Emory Franklin

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for James Emory Franklin, 74, of Wedowee will be at 
10 a.m. CDT on Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. 
Ray Franklin officiating.  Burial will be at Macon Memorial Gardens, Macon, Ga., on 
Thursday, June 29, at 11 a.m. EDT.
   Mr. Franklin died suddenly on Monday, June 26, in Wedowee.
   A former resident of Ft. Valley, Ga., he was born in Cleburne County on July 8, 1925, 
son of Rufus C. and Lillie Yarbrough Franklin.  He had been a civilian metal worker at 
Warner Robbins AFB and was a United Methodist.
   Survivors include two daughters, Renee Mobley of Kathleen, Ga., and Carlette Simpson 
of Chesapeake, Va.; five sisters, Essie Gentle and Willie Dean Clifton of Wedowee, Mary 
Clifton and Frances Patterson of Abbeville and Mozella Clifton of Woodland; 
two brothers, Willis Franklin of Wedowee and Junior Clifton of Woodland; and 
two grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be family members.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Kline Sledge

   (PEARLAND, Texas) Funeral services for Kline Sledge, 69, a native of Randolph 
County, were June 21, 2000, in Pearland, Texas.  Mr. Sledge died Sunday, June 18, at his 
home in Pearland after an extended illness.
   He is survived by one son, Randy Sledge of Pearland; a granddaughter, and two 
brothers, Calvin Sledge of Roanoke and Edward Sledge of Snow Camp, N. C.

Nancy Lee Heard Joiner

   (WOODLAND) Nancy Lee Heard Joiner, 82, of Woodland died Wednesday, June 21, 
2000, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Mrs. Joiner was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church, Woodland.
   Survivors include her husband, Floyd Joiner of Woodland; three daughters, Cassie Stone 
of Woodland, Martiner Lott of Fairburn, Ga., and Wanda Nelson of Martiniez, Ga.; four 
sons, Roy Lee Joiner, Willie B. Joiner and James Edward Joiner of Woodland and Larry 
Joiner of Moultrie, Ga.; five sisters, three brothers; and a host of nieces, nephews, other 
relatives and friends.
   Services for Mrs. Joiner were Saturday, June 24, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Methodist 
Church, Woodland, with the Rev. Burnett Jackson officiating.  Interment was in the Floyd 
and Nancy Joiner Family Cemetery in Woodland.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

John Weston Trainor

   (HOGANSVILLE, Ga.) Memorial services for John Weston Trainor, 52 of Hogansville, 
Ga., will be at 3 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, 
Roanoke.
   Mr. Trainor died Saturday, June 24, at his residence.
   A former resident of Franklin, Ga., Mr. Trainor was born in Florida.  He had been 
employed as a truck driver and was a Unitarian.
   No services or visitation are scheduled.
   Survivors include his wife, Frances Perkins Trainor of Hogansville, and two 
step-daughters, Penny Garner of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Sandy Huckaby of 
Thomaston, Ga.

   (WADLEY) Billy Lamar Tomblin, 70, of Wadley died Monday, June 26, 2000, at 
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, at Huey Funeral Home Chapel 
in Canton, Ga., with the Rev. John Holaway officiating.  Interment will be in Cherokee 
Memorial Park, Canton.
   Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Graham Tomblin of Wadley; two sons, Tony Lamar 
Tomblin and Steven Lee Tomblin of Wadley; a daughter, Deborah Janes of Tracy, Calif.; 
a sister, Sue Roach of Heflin; and one grandchild.
