OBITUARIES:

Eula Mae Buchanon

   (VALLEY) Eula Mae Buchanon, 84, of Valley died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at her 
residence.
   A native of Randolph County, Mrs. Buchanon was born Feb. 11, 1916, daughter of the 
late Nealie Alice Arrington Davis and the late William Thomas Davis.  She had retired 
from West Point Pepperell's Fairfax Mill after more than 28 years of service.  She enjoyed 
working in her garden and growing flowers.  She was a member of Big Springs Baptist 
Church in Randolph County.
   Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Hubbard of Valley and Deidra McGill of Lanett; 
two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, William Buchanon, and a daughter, Peggy Jean Buchanon.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 11 a.m. on 
Friday, Feb. 2, with graveside services at 12:30 at Big Springs Cemetery.  The Rev. Rusty 
Letson and the Rev. Kenneth Griffith officiated.
   Active pallbearers were Bruce Davis, Ralph Davis, Scott Davis, Ted Noles, Don 
Arrington and Freddie Wright.
   Arrangements were Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Crawford William Smith

   (WOODLAND) Services for Crawford William Smith, 79, of Woodland were Saturday, 
Feb. 3, 2001, at 2 p.m. CST at Bethel East Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ridley Herren, 
Ridley Parmer and Brad Horton officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Smith died Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tuskegee 
following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born May 13, 1921, son of Matthew 
Smith and Leo Daniel Smith.  He was an Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient from 
World War II, a self-employed farmer, a member of the VFW and American Legion, and a 
member of Bethel East Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Smith of Woodland; two daughters, Maxcine Eason 
of Bowdon, Ga. and Cupidean Herren of Woodland; a son, Dannie Smith of Woodland; 
eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Ken Eason, Matt Smith, Scott Herren, Josh Herren, Donnie Smith, 
Merlin Herren and Daniel Wortham.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Annie Ruth Smith

   (FIVE POINTS) Services for Annie Ruth Smith, 77, of Five Points, formerly of East 
Point, Ga., were Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. 
Jim Dykes, the Rev. Vernon Brown and Mr. Richard Laird officiating.  Burial was in the 
adjoining cemetery. 
   Mrs. Smith died Saturday, Feb. 3, at Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   A Chambers County native, Mrs. Smith was born May 7, 1923, daughter of J. E. and 
Geneva Hill Smith.  She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.  She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Arlie Lee Smith.
   Survivors include one daughter, Dianne Kendrick of LaFayette; one son, J. Michael 
Smith of Five Points; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Randall Kendrick, Shane Smith, Steve Golden, Bobby Tanner, Don 
Brown and Doyle Shelnutt.
   In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to the Alabama Baptist 
Children's Home (P.O. Box 361767, Birmingham, AL 35236-9860).

Elizabeth Jacqlynn Hester

   (ROANOKE) Services for Elizabeth Jacqlynn "Jackie" Hester, 58, of Roanoke were 
Tuesday, Feb 6, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Harold 
Bonner officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Hester died Saturday, Feb. 3, at Hospice LaGrange.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Hester was born June 28, 1942, a daughter of Herbert 
Hoover and Retter Mae Hyatt Wilson.  She had been employed with Milliken Mills' Live 
Oak Plant, LaGrange.  She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Allen Hester; father, 
Herbert Wilson; a brother Curtis Wilson; two sisters, Judy Carden and Brenda Harmon; 
and three grandchildren, Jarrett and Jane Garrett and Jordan Hester.
   Survivors include three daughters, Susan Cofield and Cindy H. Clark of Roanoke and 
Donna Hester of Austin, Texas; her mother Retter Mae Wilson of Roanoke; one 
granddaughter; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Jay Landon Harrington

   (WOODLAND) Services for Jay Landon Harrington, 18, of Woodland were Tuesday, 
Feb. 6, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Herren's Grove Baptist Church, with Bro. Ricky Murphy, the 
Rev. Paul Wydner and the Rev. Darnell Teal officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mr. Harrington died Saturday, Feb. 3, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident 
in Carroll County, Ga.
   Jay Harrington was born Aug. 12, 1982, in Carrollton, Ga.  He graduated from 
Woodland High School, Class of 2000, and was attending Southern Union State 
Community College.  He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and a former member of 
the FFA, 4-H, Junior Cattlemen's Association, the Junior Limousine Association and the 
Woodland High School basketball team.  He had been employed with Tanner Medical 
Center.
   Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Ronda and Jimmy Phillips of Bowdon, Ga.; 
father and stepmother, David and Louise Harrington of Woodland; grandparents Curtis 
and Maxine Stewart of Bowdon and Mary Harrington of Woodland; great-grandparents, 
Ina Geter and Lila Stewart of Bowdon; and one brother, Scot Harrington of Woodland.
   Pallbearers were Ben Futrual, Jay Stewart, Jeff Mitchell, John Harmon, Eric Payne, 
Matthew Davis, Dr. Carson, Huel Bishop, Bob Ebert, Billy Walls and Jamie Walls.  
Honorary pallbearers were former classmates of the Woodland High School Class of 
2000.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Edward Fincher

   (LANETT) Edward "Ed" Fincher, 77, of Lanett died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital.
   Mr. Fincher was born in Clay County on Sept. 29, 1923, son of the late Margaret Swann 
Fincher and the late Augost Eugene Fincher.  He had retired from West Point Pepperell's 
Fairview Mill and had built several homes after he retired.  He was an avid gardener and 
enjoyed the Lanett Senior Club.  He was an active Mason and Shriner and a member of 
the Church of God.
   Survivors include three daughters, Wylene Wilerson of Lanett and Juanita Bates and 
Anne Freeman of LaGrange, Ga.; two sons, Jack Fincher of LaGrange and Mancel Fincher 
of Dresden, Tenn.; two sisters, Myra Nell Robinson and Peggy Sherman of Roanoke; two 
brothers, Howard Fincher of Gadsden and James W. Fincher of Anniston; and 15 
grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, Edward E. Fincher.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 11 a.m. on 
Thursday, Feb. 1, with burial in Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange.  The Rev. Joe 
Schuck officiated.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Kassandra Griffith Talbott

   (ANNISTON) Memorial services for Kassandra Griffith "Kassi" Talbott, 30, of 
Anniston will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Church Alive in Alexandria, with Pastor Jack 
Roach officiating.
   Mrs. Talbott died Sunday at Regional Medical Center.
   Survivors include her husband, Fenton Leroy Talbott of Anniston; three sons, Silas 
Gabriel Griffith, Caleb Michael Griffith and Zachary David Griffith, all of Anniston; her 
parents, Kenneth Griffith and Sandra Griffith of Anniston; her grandmothers, Edna 
Bowman and Elna Griffith, both of Anniston; three sisters, Keli Griffith, Kendra Griffith 
Hollaway and Kerri Griffith Ladd, all of Anniston; an aunt, Kay Jones of Roanoke; two 
nieces and three nephews.
   Mrs. Talbott grew up attending Golden Springs Baptist Church and was a 1988 
graduate of Anniston High School.  She attended Jacksonville State University and Ayers 
State Technical College.  She was an LPN.
   Gray Brown-Service Mortuary and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

John Calvin Williams

   (ROANOKE) Services for John Calvin Williams, 71, of Roanoke were Thursday, Feb. 
8, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Antioch Christian Church, with the Rev. Floyd Carmack officiating.  
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Williams died Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Chambers County.
   A lifelong resident of the area, he was born in Chambers County on Feb. 15, 1929, son 
of John Alonza Williams and Thelma Burdette Williams.  He was an Army veteran of the 
Korean War, had been employed as a line crew foreman with Alabama Power Company, 
and was a member of Antioch Christian Church.  He was preceded in death by his wife, 
Anita Kirby Williams, his parents, Alonza and Thelma Williams, and a brother, Eugene 
Williams.
   Survivors include a daughter, Kaye Williams Hill of Columbus, Ga.; a son John H. 
Williams of Thomaston, Ga.; a sister, Mattie Ruth Royston of Roanoke; two aunts, Sara 
Ellen Prather of Valley and Virginia Williams of LaFayette; and three grandchildren.
   Memorial donations can be made to the Antioch Christian Church Memorial Fund, 
Attention: David Meddick, 8279 County Road 258, Roanoke, AL 36274.
   Pallbearers were Wayne Adcock, Collin Adcock, Billy Royston, David Meddick,

Roosevelt Burden

   (ROANOKE) Roosevelt Burden, 49, of Roanoke died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at his 
home.
   Services were Saturday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in the Bacon 
Level community, with the Rev. Eric Ware and Bishop C. L. Wilkes officiating.  Burial 
was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include his father, Luther Burden of Roanoke; two daughters, Ms. Latrissiana 
Burden of Newnan, Ga., and Ms. Yvonne Burden of Doraville, Ga.; four brothers, James 
Burden, Kerry Burden, Phillip Burden and Kenneth Burden, all of Roanoke; three sisters, 
Mrs. Gwendolyn Marie Phillips of Anniston, Ms. Johnnie Bell of Roanoke and Mrs. Faye 
Harris of LaGrange, Ga.; two grandchildren; and a special friend, Jerry Knight of 
Shrieveport, La.
   Mr. Burden was a native of Heard County, Ga., where he joined New Hope Baptist 
Church at an early age, remaining a member until death.  He worked as a self-employed 
mechanic in addition to holding several other jobs in the meat processing and construction 
industry.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Willie Frances Burden, a sister, 
Fannie Pearl Burden, and a daughter, Shannon Annette Burden.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Louisa Williams

   (WEDOWEE) Louisa Williams, 97, of Wedowee died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at her 
home.
   Services were Saturday, Feb. 10, at 1:30 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist 
Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. Joseph Hepburn, pastor, officiating.  Burial was in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include one son, Tom E. Williams of Wedowee; two daughters, Ms. Mae 
Tom Houston of Wedowee and Ms. Naomi Knox of Oxford; one brother, Jessie "Biggon" 
Houston of Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Lavada Bailey of Wedowee; 30 grandchildren and a 
large number of great-grandchildren.
   Ms. Williams was a native of Randolph County, born in Malone to the late John Wesley 
and Carrie Pool Houston.  Early in life she affiliated with Stephen's Mission United 
Methodist Church, Wedowee, later joining Union Chapel United Methodist Church, where 
she served faithfully as church treasurer for many years until declining health restricted her 
activities.  Ms. Williams was preceded in death by her first husband, the late J. Wilson, 
second husband, the late Tom Williams, and three children, Leo Wilson, Edward Wilson 
and Annie Lou Molden.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Annie Glass

   (FIVE POINTS) Services for Annie Glass, 81, of Five Points were Sunday, Feb. 11, 
2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Sonny Kent and the Rev. H. 
L. Pierce officiating.  Burial was in the Standing Rock Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Ms. Glass died Thursday, Feb. 8, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   A native of Chambers County, she was born Sept. 23, 1919, daughter of Newt and 
Nancy Jeter Glass.  She was a homemaker and a member of Standing Rock Assembly of 
God Church.
   Survivors include a daughter, Queenie Scott of LaGrange, two sons, Jimmy Glass and 
Wallace Glass of Standing Rock; two brothers, Barbee Glass of Bessemer and Monroe 
Glass of Roanoke; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Dwayne Dye, Tony Umberger, John Glass, Jeff Butler, Bubba Scott 
and Walter Brawner.

Thomas Louis Adcock

   (Roanoke)  Services for Thomas Louis Adcock, 75, of Roanoke were Sunday, Feb 11, 
2001, at 2 p.m. at White's Chapel Methodist Church, with the Rev. Don Quick and 
Brother Mike Helms officiating.  Burial in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Adcock died Friday, Feb. 9, at Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   A former resident of Jacksonville, Fla., Mr. Adcock was born in Randolph County on 
July 23, 1925, son of the late Dee Eston Adcock and the late Tweedie May Adcock.  He 
was a Navy veteran of World War II, had been employed as a truck driver, and was a 
member of White's Chapel Methodist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Fay Bassett Adcock of Roanoke; two stepsons, Dempsey 
Roberts of Roanoke and Stanley Sellers of Five Points; two sisters, Winnie Veal of 
Alexander City and Liza Burdette of LaGrange; a brother Arnie Adcock of Roanoke; four 
step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were James Weathers, Eston Burdette, Gentry Burdette, Billy Gene Kirby, 
Dewayne Satterwhite and James Ussery.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Charlie Rufus Watts

   (WEDOWEE) Charlie Rufus Watts, 60, of Wedowee died Wednesday, Feb 7, 2001, at 
Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Services were Monday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev. Hollis Boykin, the Rev. William Phillips and the Rev. L. B. 
Houston officiating.  Burial was in Rocky Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery, 
Roanoke.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Florence Watts of Wedowee; three sons, James Watts 
of Wedowee, Darrow Watts of Indianapolis, Ind., and Michael Watts of Carrollton, Ga.; 
five grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Geneva Watts of Toledo, Ohio; and nine brothers, 
Willie Ralph Watts, Thomas Watts, Robert Watts, James Watts, Gilbert Watts, Tony 
Watts, Leon Watts, Edward Watts and Adrian Lynn Watts, all of Toledo.
   Mr. Watts was a native of the Broughton community, son of the late Henry Curtis Watts 
and Mrs. Geneva Houston Watts.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Earnest Watts.  
Mr. Watts was a life-long member of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church of Roanoke.  
He worked for more than 30 years in the construction industry with several Atlanta-based 
companies, including J. A. Jones Construction Company, Russel and Cook Construction, 
and R. H. Harden Construction.  He retired from active employment in 1999.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Annie Lois Wright

   (ROANOKE) Annie Lois Wright, 72, of Roanoke died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at 
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Wright was a member of East Roanoke Church of God.
   Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Lathonia Wright of Wadley and Danny Wright of 
Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Jimmie Grier of Roanoke and Mrs. Ida Houston of New York 
City; two brothers, the Rev. R. L. Heflin of Roanoke and Tom Luther Heflin of 
Philadelphia, Pa.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, 
nephews, other relatives and friends.
   Services for Mrs. Wright were Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. at East Roanoke Church of 
God, with Bishop Wade Wright officiating.  Interment was in Skyview Memorial Gardens.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Charlene Strain Adcock

   (ROANOKE) Services for Charlene Strain Adcock, 83, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, 
Feb. 14, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Rock Stand Congregational Christian Church, with the Revs. 
Kenneth Johnson and Gary Baugh officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Adcock died Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born May 21, 1917, daughter of 
Lebrus and Annie Mae Scoggins Strain.  She had been employed with Palm Beach 
Company and was a member of Rock Stand Congregational Christian Church.  She was 
preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Velford Strain, and a sister Lucile Cooley.
   Survivors include her husband, Curtis Adcock of Roanoke; a daughter, Joyce Sanders of 
Roanoke; a son Virgil Adcock of Piedmont; three sisters, Marbelene Amason of Atlanta, 
Ozell Ellerbee of Thomaston, Ga., and Carrie Norred of LaGrange; seven grandchildren 
and eight great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Adcock will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Tony Amason, Randy Norred, Barry Cooley, Boots Lovvorn, Aubrey 
Strain and Max Barker.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Fred L. Tomlinson

   (FIVE POINTS) Services for Fred L. Tomlinson, 69, of Five Points were Tuesday, Feb. 
13, 2001, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Lavelle Reynolds and Jim Dykes 
officiating.  Burial was at Five Points Cemetery.
   Mr. Tomlinson died Sunday, Feb. 11, at his home.
   A lifelong resident of Chambers County, he was born Feb. 15, 1931, son of Curtis and 
Sara Emma Golden Tomlinson.  He had been employed as an equipment operator and 
logger.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary Burgess Tomlinson of Five Points; his mother, Sara E. 
Tomlinson of Five Points; a sister, Betty Moreland of Roswell, Ga.; and a niece, Teresa 
Moreland of Atlanta.
   Pallbearers were David Golden, Robert Davenport, Thomas Barnes, Melvin Williams 
and Ollie Redmond.

Carey Rollins

   (WOODLAND) Services for Carey Rollins, 84, of Woodland were Thursday, Feb 8, at 
2 p.m. at Rocky Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Felix New and Brother Clayton 
Scott officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Rollins died Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born June 26, 1916, son of Elisha Henry 
Rollins and Mary Frances Evans Rollins.  He had been employed with the Alabama 
Department of Transportation and was a member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church.  He 
was preceded in death by two wives, Emma Satterwhite Rollins and Dovie Mitchell 
Rollins.
   Survivors include two daughters, Martha Browning of Cusseta and Doris New of 
Wedowee; a son, Russell Rollins of Woodland; a step-son, Bruce Mitchell of Roanoke; 16 
grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.

Ernest Ridley Smith

   (ROCK MILLS) Services for Ernest Ridley Smith, 85, of Rock Mills were Thursday, 
Feb. 15, 2001, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Louie Olds and 
Cecil E. Williams officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Smith died Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   A resident of Rock Mills for many years, he was born in Heard County, Ga., on Sept. 
18, 1915, son of Needham Ernest Smith and Lucy Mae Hester Smith.  He was an Air 
Force veteran of World War II, had been employed with Wehadkee Yarns, and was a 
member of Rock Mills First Baptist Church. 
   Survivors include his wife, Doris Banks Smith of Rock Mills; a daughter, Marcelene 
Brand of Snellville, Ga.; a son, Danny W. Smith of Rock Mills; a sister, Ruby Patterson of 
Roanoke; two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one 
step-great-grandson.
   The family requests memorial donations be made to Rock Mills First Baptist Church c/o

Margaret Harry Bonner

   (ROANOKE) Services for Margaret Harry Bonner, 77, of Roanoke were Saturday, Feb. 
17, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Wendell Rush and 
Stoney Halsey officiating.  Burial followed at Forest Home Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Bonner died Wednesday, Feb. 14, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Bonner was born June 4, 1923, daughter of 
Cicero and Cumi Towler Harry.  She was a member of Forest Home Christian Church and 
had worked as a nurse with Bonner Hospital and Heard County Hospital.  She was 
preceded in death by a son, Emory Bonner Jr.
   Survivors include her husband, Royce Bonner of Roanoke; two sisters, Andora

Jeppie Lee Ford

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mrs. Jeppie Lee Ford, 82, of Roanoke were on Saturday, 
Feb. 17, 2001, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Williams 
officiating.  Burial followed at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Ford died Friday, Feb. 16, at LaFayette Extended Care in LaFayette.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 28, 1918, daughter of 
William A. and Cora Lee Johns Smith.  She had been employed at Handley Mills, and was 
a member of El Bethel Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Jack Ford of Roanoke; a son, Gene Ford of Valley; four 
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Sarah E. Newell

   (FIVE POINTS) Services for Sarah E. Newell, 83, of Five Points were Saturday, Feb. 
17, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Dykes and Yancey 
Sanders officiating.  Burial followed at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery in Chambers 
County.
   Miss Newell died Thursday, Feb. 15, at Florence Hand Nursing Home in LaGrange, Ga.
   A Chambers County native and lifelong resident, Miss Newell was born Sept. 27, 1917, 
daughter of Robert Lee and Annie Holderfield Newell.  She was a graduate of Five Points 
High School Class of 1935; a member of Bethel Baptist Church at Welch; and had worked 
as a bookkeeper with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
   Miss Newell is survived by several cousins.
   Pallbearers were Wade Stephens, Donald Brown, Harold Kindrick, Doyle Shelnutt, 
George Robinson and Stanley Sellers.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Bethel Baptist Church, 1463 County

Elbert R. Taylor

   (PHENIX CITY) Retired Lt. Col. Elbert R. Taylor, 92, of Phenix City died Thursday, 
Feb. 15, 2001, at Phenix Regional Hospital.
   Services were Friday, Feb. 16, at 9 a.m. EST at Summerville United Methodist Church 
in Phenix City with Dr. John Paul Thomas officiating.  Burial followed at Ft. Mitchell 
National Cemetery.
   Col. Taylor was born April 9, 1908, in Randolph county, the son of the late Vistula 
Ware Taylor and William Ellis Taylor.  He graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute 
(Auburn University) in 1931.  He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers in 
World War II and the Korean War.  Col. Taylor was county engineer for Russell County 
for 18 years and was a member of Summerville United Methodist Church.
   He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Pinckard Bryan Taylor of Phenix City; one 
son, James S. Taylor of Stafford, Texas; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and 
nephews.  Col. Taylor was preceded in death by three brothers, James A. Taylor, Col. 
William Woodrow Taylor and Charles E. Taylor, and four sisters, Ruth Wallace, Myrtle 
Minter, Carolyn Carr and Lucille Lygren.
   Pallbearers were Charles Batastini, Howard Carr, Ted Harrelson, Clifton Minter, Luey 
Rushing, Ballard Seegar, Don Taylor and William Wallace.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.

Mary Davis Hendrick

   (ANNISTON) Mary Davis Hendrick, 74, of Anniston died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at 
Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Survivors include a brother, John William Davis Sr. of Wedowee; two nieces; two 
nephews; and 10 great-nieces and great nephews.
   Services were Sunday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. at Gray Brown-Service Chapel, with burial in 
Highland Cemetery.  The Rev. Tom Bell officiated.
   Memorial donations may be made to Anniston First United Methodist Church Paws 
Program, Neyco Sunday School Class, or National Tuberous Sclerosis Association.
   Mrs. Hedrick was a member of First United Methodist of Anniston and the Neyco 
Sunday School Class.  Mrs. Hendrick taught school in Calhoun County for a number of 
years.  She was valedictorian of the Class of 1943 in Woodland.  She was preceded in 
death by her husband, James Carl Hendrick, and her parents, Jesse B. and Lilla Davis.
   Pallbearers were John Davis Jr., Paul Davis, Jeff Bryant, Gary Hammett, Jason 
Hammett, Jimmy Flynn and William Lovvorn.  Honorary pallbearers were members of the 
Neyco Sunday School Class.

William Wayne Adamson

   (ROANOKE) A memorial service for William Wayne Adamson, 62, of Roanoke will be 
on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. 
Lynn Janney and Jim Chestnut officiating.
   Mr. Adamson died Sunday, Feb. 18, at his home.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Nov. 10, 1938, son of Cullman and 
Ruby Truitt Adamson.  He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator with Bailey 
Construction Company and was a member of Ridgeway Methodist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Barbara Adamson of Roanoke; two daughters, Melissa 
Langley of Wedowee and Dena Jackson of Roanoke; two sons, Dennis Adamson and 
Rodney Adamson of Roanoke; a brother, Milam Adamson of Roanoke; and six 
grandchildren.
   The family requests no flowers be sent.

Sallie Belle Laws Johnson

   (WADLEY) Services for Sallie Belle Laws Johnson, 92, of Wadley were Sunday, Feb. 
18, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Rev. Zenus Windsor 
officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mrs. Johnson died Thursday, Feb. 15, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Dec. 30, 1908.  She had been 
employed at Wehadkee and Handley Mills and was a member of Macedonia Baptist 
Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William Grady Johnson, and a 
daughter, Sarah Knight.
   Survivors include a daughter, Margie Sikes of College Station, Texas; five 
grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Kyle Knight, Kevin Knight, Derick Knight, Wayne Hodges, Herb 
Flanagan and Donald Hodges.

Lena Rutlin

   (WEDOWEE) Lena Rutlin, 49, a former resident of Wedowee, recently residing at 
Roanoke Health Care Center, died Sunday morning, Feb. 18, 2001, at George H. Lanier 
Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Services will be Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist 
Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. Joseph Hepburn, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Rudine Buchanan of Daviston, Ms. Linda Rutlin of 
Wedowee, and Ms. Joann Knight and Ms. Sally Meadows of Miami, Fla.; a special cousin, 
Mrs. Christine Roundtree of Wedowee; one aunt; and several nieces and nephews.
   Ms. Rutlin was the second of six children of the late B. J. and Verrmell Godwin Rutlin.  
Born and reared in Wedowee, she joined Union Chapel United Methodist Church at an 
early age, where she was active as a member of the Union Chapel Choir and was well 
known for her singing ability.  Several years ago she became disabled due to a stroke and 
was later confined to Roanoke Health Care Center, where she actively and enthusiastically 
participated in all nursing home activities.  In 2001, she won the title of Ms. Roanoke 
Health Care, an annual beauty pageant sponsored by the nursing home staff.  Participants 
who win this competition go on to compete regionally and state-wide with other winners 
from extended care facilities.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Sarah Hagler Risley

   (ROANOKE) A memorial service for Sarah Hagler Risley, 64, of Roanoke will be on 
Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Roanoke First United Methodist Church, with the 
Rev. Tex Ergle officiating.
   Mrs. Risley died Sunday, Feb. 18, at Metropolitan Hospice in New Orleans, La.
   A former resident of Durham, N.C., she had lived in Roanoke since 1999.  She was born 
in Durham on Nov. 7, 1936, daughter of Ellis Pruitt and Sarah Frances Hagler.  She was a 
member of Roanoke First United Methodist, Roanoke Garden Club and the Randolph 
County Historical Museum.
   Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Risley of New Orleans and Beth Risley and 
Laura Risley Lombardo, both of Baton Rouge, La.; and two grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at Roanoke First United Methodist Church from 9 until 
10 a.m. on Saturday prior to the memorial service.
   Arrangements are by L. A. Muhleisen and Son, New Orleans.

Roy Staples Sr.

   (WADLEY) Roy Staples Sr., 88, of Wadley died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, in Lineville.
   Services will be at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Wadley, on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 2 
p.m., with the Rev. Tom Staples Jr. officiating.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.
   Surviving are four sons, Roy Staples Jr., Tom Staples Sr. and Billy Staples, all of 
Wadley, and Nolan Staples Sr. of Toledo, Ohio; two daughters, Christine Presley of 
Wadley and Betty Nathan of Tampa, Fla.; one brother, Eddie Staples of Atlanta, Ga.; 
three sisters, Sara Weaver and Esther Thomas of Wadley and Oreala Johnson of Atlanta; 
seven sisters-in law; four brothers-in-law; one step-brother, Ethen Laney of Wadley; 26 
grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of 
nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
   Mr. Staples was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

   (ROANOKE) Columbus Spradling, 74, of Roanoke died Sunday Feb. 11, 2001, at 
Gadsden Regional Medical Center, Gadsden.
   Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Lela Gilbert of Roanoke; two grandchildren; six 
great-grandchildren; one brother, James Allen Woods of Lineville; and a host of nieces, 
nephews, other relatives and friends.
   Services were Thursday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. at Sweet Home Baptist Church, Five Points, 
with the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating.  Interment was in Rock Mills Baptist Church 
Cemetery.

Mavis Marie Holloway

   (NEWELL) Services for Mavis Marie Holloway, 65, of Newell were Thursday, Feb. 22, 
2001, at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church, with the Revs. Douglas Haynes and 
Raymond Davis officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Holloway died Tuesday, Feb. 20, at her home.
   She was born in Cleburne County on June 14, 1935, daughter of Marvin and Velma 
Stallings McDaniel.  She was employed as a seamstress and was a member of Irondale 
Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Betty Alewine.
   Survivors include her husband, Onward Holloway of Newell; a daughter, Sandra Hines 
of Arizona; a brother, Glenn McDaniel of Ranburne; two grandchildren, two nieces and 
three nephews.
   Pallbearers were Buddy Holloway, Marion Holloway, Billy Edwards, Joey McDaniel, 
Steve Alewine and Phillip Alewine.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Charles Carey Bennett, 82, of Roanoke were Sunday, Feb.

Gardens.
   Mr. Bennett died Thursday, Feb. 22, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born July 10, 1918, son of Homer and 
Mary Lou Smith Bennett.  He had been employed at Handley Mills and was a member of 
Bethany Lime Congregational Christian Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Alene Shipp Bennett of Roanoke; a daughter, Betty Burdette 
of Cragford; a son, Roger Bennett of Woodland; three sisters, Rose Stanford, Minnie Lou 
Modjeski and Odell Bennett, all of Roanoke; a brother, Walter Bennett of Cusseta; and 
two grandchildren.

Alfred Craft

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Alfred Craft, 89, of Wedowee were Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, 
at 2 p.m. at Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church, with the Rev. Leron Murphy 
and the Rev. Earnest Lipham officiating.  Masonic graveside services followed in the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Craft died Friday, Feb. 23, at Nursing Home Care in Anniston.  He was a native and 
lifelong resident of Randolph County, retired as a farmer and a mechanic.  He was a 
member of Sawyer Lodge #93, F & AM, for 47 years and a charter member of Union Hill 
Congregational Methodist Church.
   He is survived by his wife, Nora K. Craft of Wedowee; two daughters, louise Craft Ogle 
of Anniston and Linda Howard of Wedowee; one son, Loyd Craft of Wedowee; six 
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a 
great-grandchild, Joshua House.
   Pallbearers were Scott Maddox, Randy Maddox, Jeff Phillips, Bobby Morris, Andy 
Morris and Mike McQueen.  Honorary pallbearers were Millard Mize, Brenford Boyd, 
Arvil Sheppard, Billy East, James Abernathy and Melvin Norris.

Evelyn J. Foster

   (LANETT) Evelyn J. Foster, 55, of Lanett died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at her 
residence.
   Mrs. Foster was born in West Point, Ga., on April 25, 1945, daughter of the late Annie 
Lou Cook Jennings and William S. Jennings.  She was a homemaker and had lived in the 
Valley area most of her life.  She had been in declining health for the past several months.
   Survivors include a daughter, Betty Avery of Lanett; three brothers, Wade Jennings and 
Billy Jennings of LaGrange, Ga., and Eugene Jennings of West Point; a sister, Lee Ramsey 
of Roanoke; and seven grandchildren.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 11 a.m. on 
Friday, Feb. 23, with burial in Johnson Memorial Gardens.  The Rev. Dennis Harmon 
officiated.

Mae B. Taylor

   (WADLEY) Services for Mae B. Taylor, 99, of Wadley were Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at 
11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Gordon Taylor, Bobby Burroughs 
and Jimmy Brand officiating.  Burial was in Forrester's Chapel Cemetery.
   Mrs. Taylor died Saturday, Feb. 24, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A native and lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Taylor was born July 13, 1901, 
daughter of Robert Lee and Sallie Yarbrough Barfield.  She was a homemaker and the 
oldest charter member of Hope Memorial Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by 
her husband, the Rev. John Taylor; five sons, Vester Taylor, Robert Taylor, Bonner 
Taylor, Calvin Taylor and Grant Taylor; and a sister Mattie Lou Foster.
   Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Lacy of Wadley; one son, John D. Taylor of 
Valley; four sisters, Florence Albright of Columbus, Ga., Jessie Cromie of Ft. Wayne, 
Ind., Ollie Gay of LaGrange, Ga., and Audrey Lentz of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, R. 
E. Barfield and Winston C. Barfield, both of Statesville, N.C. and A. J. Barfield of Alta 
Monte Springs, Fla.; 21 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 54 great-great- 
grandchildren; and a special friend, Roanoke Health Care roommate Aline Cooper.
   Grandsons were pallbearers.

Bernie Lee Knight Miller

   (THOMASTON, Ga.) Bernie Lee Knight Miller, 85, of Thomaston, Ga., died Saturday, 
Feb. 24, 2001, at upson Regional Medical Center, Thomaston.
   Services were at East Thomaston Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, with 
the Rev. Joey Smith officiating.  Burial was in Upson Memorial Gardens.
   Mrs. Miller was born in the Bacon Level community.  She was retired from B. F. 
Goodrich, where she worked as a winder.  She was a member of East Thomaston Baptist 
Church and attended First Assembly of God.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Mary Jo Nain of Watkinsville, Ga.; a son, Woody M. 
Miller of Thomaston; a brother, Jimmy Knight of Thomaston; two sisters, Mrs. Mary 
Kelly of Macon, Ga., and Mrs. Lanie Miller of Wisconsin; five grandchildren and four 
great-grandchildren.
   Donations may be made to East Thomaston Baptist Church, Park Lane, Thomaston, GA
