OBITUARIES:
Garfield McDaniel
(ROANOKE) Garfield McDaniel, 74, of Route 3, Roanoke, died Wednesday, Nov. 30,
1994, in West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after a short illness.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Highway First Congregational
Methodist Church, with Revs. Wayne Jetton, Roger Florence and Vernon Willis
officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. McDaniel is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lanora McDaniel of Roanoke; two
daughters, Mrs. Frances Williamson of Wedowee and Mrs. Pat Nelson of Covington, Ga.;
one sister, Mrs. Irene Bowen of Roanoke; two brothers, Curtis McDaniel and P. R.
McDaniel of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Melinda Lipham of Wedowee, Danny Nelson,
Dawn Day and Crystal Wilson of Covington, Ga. and Ingrid Jeter of Anniston; and
10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were James Watson, Tommy Cox, Joe Clark, Allen McDaniel, Larry Clark,
Gary Spears, Phil Sheppard and Wayne Jeter.
Mr. McDaniel was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was a
member of Highway First Congregational Methodist Church and was retired from textile
work.

T. J. Brown
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) The Rev. T. J. Brown, 75, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday, Dec.4,
1994, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after a lengthy illness.
The Rev. Mr. Brown was born in Randolph County June 3, 1919, son of the late
William Thomas and Nonnie Essie Hood Brown. He was a retired Baptist minister who
pastored several churches in east Alabama and west Georgia. He had lived in LaGrange
since 1939. He was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, LaGrange, and a U.S.
Navy veteran of World War II.
Funeral services were at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, LaGrange, on Tuesday, Dec.
6, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wendell W. Brown, the Rev. Olin White, and the Rev. Kenneth
Parker officiating. Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Brown of LaGrange; four sons, Edwin Thomas
Brown of Jeffersonville, Ga., Theron Wayne Brown of Macon, Ga., the Rev. Wendell
William Brown of West Point, Ga., and Jeff Brown of LaGrange; two sisters, Mrs. Addie
Lee Burks of Dalton, Ga., and Mrs. Edna Ashmore of LaGrange; 12 grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty Louise Carson
(CARROLLTON, Ga.) Betty Louise Carson, 53, of Carrollton, Ga., died Monday,
Dec. 5, 1994, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Carson was born in Lee County, Ga., May 22, 1941, the daughter of Carl Dupree
and the late Elise Taylor Dupree. Mrs. Carson was involved in attending to the elderly and
shut-ins, and had attended Abilene Baptist Church.
Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by three brothers.
Surviving are her husband, Gerson James Carson; her father, Carl Dupree; and one
brother, Carl D. Dupree, all of Carrollton.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. (EST) from Martin & Hightower
West Center Street Chapel in Carrollton, with the Rev. Enver McKinsey officiating. Music
will be under the direction of Dewey Caldwell. Interment will follow in Abilene Baptist
Church Cemetery.

Wiley B. Johnston
(NEWELL) Wiley B. Johnston, 70, of Rt. 1, Newell, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 1994, at
East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, at Union Baptist Church, with Revs.
Ray Runyan and Larry Cosper officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife, Mrs. Marie Johnston of Newell; three daughters,
Mrs. Margie Cosper of Wedowee, Mrs. Judy Meadows of Woodland and Mrs. Jane
Lipham of Newell; three sons, Jack Johnston of Woodland, Joe Johnston of Newell and
Barry Johnston of Roanoke; three sisters, Mrs. Earla Flippins of Escanda, Mich., Miss
Mary Johnston of Anniston and Mrs. Ann Moses of Pensacola, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and
one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Mr. Johnston [was] a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was retired
from Anniston Army Depot at Bynum as a clerk and was a veteran of World War II. He
was preceded in death by one son, Benny Johnston.

Nellie Velma Spradlin
(WOODLAND) Nellie Velma Spradlin, 67, of Rt. 1, Woodland, died Tuesday, Nov.
29, 1994, at her residence after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at Bethel East Baptist Church, with
Rev. Styles Akins and Ridley Parmer officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. Spradlin is survived by two daughter, Mrs. Scarlet Heard and Mrs. Berna White,
both of Woodland; three sons, Bill Hendrix of Roanoke, Danny Spradlin of Heflin and
Donnie Spradlin of Woodland; one sister, Mrs. Lorene Webb of Carrollton, Ga.; three
brothers, Paul Maddox of Savannah, Ga., Luther Maddox of Bremen, Ga., and Garner
Maddox of Woodland; nine step-children; and seven grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were nephews.
Mrs. Spradlin, a native of Carroll County, Ga., spend most of her life in Randolph
County. She was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers. She was retired as a
seamstress with General Shoe Company.

Minnie Bell Winston
(ROANOKE) Minnie Bell Winston, 84, of Wilkie Clark Drive, Roanoke, died Monday,
Nov. 28, 1994, at Randolph County Hospital.
Mrs. Winston, a native of Roanoke, was active in the Bethel United Methodist Church.
She was a musician and was founder of the Winston Chorus.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Martha Ann Thomas and Mrs. Edith Thomas of
Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Jeanette Baker, Mrs. Cynthia E. Bell and Ms. Michalyn
Winston of Roanoke; two sons, Aaron Winston of Valdosta, Ga., and Donald R. Winston
of North Richland Hills, Tex.; and 38 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Services for Mrs. Winston were Friday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. from Bethel United
Methodist Church, with the Revs. R. L. Smith, R. L. Heflin and Michael Strong
officiating. Interment was in East Roanoke Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke.

Willie Frank Allen Jr.
(ROANOKE) Willie Frank Boy Child Allen Jr., 61, of Roanoke died Sunday,
Nov. 20, 1994, at Randolph County Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Louise Allen of Roanoke; two daughters, Mrs. Deloris
Gaines and Mrs. Elizabeth Hatcher of Roanoke; two step-sons, William Lester Stephens
of Detroit, Mich., and Howard McFarlin of Roanoke; one sister, Ms. Rae Nell Allen of
Atlanta, Ga.; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Allen were Saturday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Pisgah Baptist
Church, with the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

James Izell Smith
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for James Izell Smith, 66, of Rt. 4, Roanoke, were
Tuesday, Dec. 6, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.
Maynard McGinty officiating. Burial was at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery in
Chambers County.
Mr. Smith died Sunday, Dec. 4, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Smith was born on May 11, 1928, son of Tommy and
Lucy McClendon Smith. He was an army veteran of the Korean War and was a textile
worker.
He is survived by two brothers, Thomas L. Smith and Lewis J. Smith, both of
Roanoke.

Burl B. Hammond
(BIG SPRINGS) Funeral services for Burl Buren Hammond, 87, of Route 3, Roanoke
(Big Springs community) were Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church,
with the Revs. David Daniel and Cecil Halsey officiating. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Mr. Hammond died Thursday, Dec. 1, 1994, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke
following a stroke.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Hammond operated a rolling store in Randolph and
adjoining counties from 1938 to 1954. He later farmed and raised cattle at Big Springs and
retired from the Randolph County Road Department in 1972. He was a longtime member
of Bethlehem (Campground) United Methodist Church at Graham.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Myrl Higgins Hammond; a daughter, Glenda
Bunch of Bremen, Ga.; a son, Harold J. Hammond of Prattville; five grandchildren, Tony
Scott of Buchanan, Ga., Sherry Robinson of Bremen, Darryl Scott of Hattiesburg, Miss.,
Dr. Alan Hammond of Memphis, Tenn., and Gregory Hammond of Alabaster; six great-
grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Copeland of Rockmart, Ga., and Doris Burton of Stone
Mountain, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to Bethlehem United
Methodist Church (Rt. 1, Box 90 A, Graham, AL 36263), Big Springs Baptist Church
(c/o Thelma Hester, Rt. 3, Box 226, Roanoke, AL 36274) or one's selected charity.

Alice Inez Brown
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Alice Inez Brown, 88, of Roanoke were Tuesday,
Dec. 6, 1994, at 11 [a.m.] at North Main Congregational Christian Church, with the Revs.
Ralph Worley and Kenneth Johnson officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Miss Brown died Sunday, Dec. 4, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, Miss Brown was born Feb. 14,
1906, daughter of James Timothy and Ila Estelle Cottle Brown. She was a member of
North Main Congregational Christian Church and had worked as a spinner with Handley
Mills.
Survivors include two brothers, Paschal C. Brown of Five Points and Edd Preston
Brown of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Charlie Cranford, Sammy Hill, Herbert Pike, Hulon Parrish, Pete
Mitchell and Gordon Bradshaw.

Marie Yates Rampy
(WINCHESTER, Tenn.) Marie Yates Rampy, 57, of Winchester, Tenn., died Sunday,
Dec. 11, 1994, at Southern Tennessee Medical Center.
Mrs. Rampy was born Jan. 15, 1937, in Randolph County, Ala. She was a member of
Winchester First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and the Franklin
County Arts Council.
Funeral services for Mrs. Rampy were Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m. at Winchester First
United Methodist Church, with Bro. Eugene Barrett and Bro. Joe Rutherford officiating.
Burial was in Watson-Gamble Memorial Park.
Survivors include her husband, John Rampy of Winchester; two sons, Michael G.
Rampy of Winchester and Stephen M. Rampy of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Janet
M. Rampy of Winchester; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Esker Yates of Winchester; two
sisters, Judy Ann Yates of Clearwater, Fla., and Jane E. Brown of Dallas, Texas; and
three grandchildren.

Bernice Mulkey
(ROANOKE) Bernice Mulkey, 75, of Rt. 3, Roanoke, died Friday, Dec. 9, 1994, in
Northport Hospital, Northport, Ala., after an extended illness.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel,
Wedowee, with the Rev. Buddy Jarmen officiating. Burial was in Potash Ridge Memory
Gardens.
Mrs. Mulkey is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Florence White of Roanoke; three
sons, James Mulkey of Roanoke, Ray Mulkey of Alaska, and Rickey Mulkey of Roanoke;
her mother, Mrs. Etta Striblin of Roanoke; two sisters, Classie Baldwin and Dorothy
Robinson of Roanoke; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were her nephews.
Mrs. Mulkey was a lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was a homemaker and a
member of Potash Church of God.

Ella Mae Adamson Pearson
(ROANOKE) Ella Mae Adamson Pearson, 94, of Route 1, Roanoke, died Friday, Dec.
16, 1994, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 1:30 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church,
Wadley, with the Rev. Raymond Cochran officiating. Burial was in the Pearson Family
Burial Grounds at Providence Cemetery, Milltown.
Mrs. Pearson was born in Chambers County, daughter of the late Rev. S. A. Adamson,
who was one of Randolph County's most respected preachers. She is the widow of the
late Luther Pearson. Three children (J. B., Samuel, and Billy) preceded her in death. She
was a lifetime member of the Abanda/Milltown community and was very active in the
Bowen East District Women's Convention, in which she held several honorary positions
of distinction.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Bertha Satterwhite, of Wilmington, N.C., Mrs.
Zelma Bailey of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Saddie Holloway of Five Points, and Mrs. Mamie
Muhammad of Roanoke; three sons, Willie Pearson and Luther Pearson of Chicago, Ill.,
and Grover Pearson of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Mrs. Dollie Maude Adamson Boykin of
Chattanooga, Tenn.; a special sister-in-law, Mrs. Marilla Pearson Smith of Kansas City,
Mo.; 40 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and many
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Jimmy Lee Hopper
(ROANOKE) Jimmy Lee Hopper, 61, of Roanoke died Thursday, Dec. 15, 1994, at
his home following an extended illness.
Funeral services were Sunday, Dec. 18, at New Harmony Missionary Baptist Church,
LaFayette, with the Rev. Chester E. Holloway officiating. Burial was in the adjoining
cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Joann Hopper of Roanoke; a daughter, Ms. Bernice
Knott of Roanoke; a step-son, Frederick Tucker of Roanoke; many foster children; a
sister, Mrs. Dorthula Bond of Humboldt, Tenn.; a special nephew, John Bond of
Humboldt; and three grandchildren.
Mr. Hopper was a native of Brownsville, Tenn., who came to Roanoke in the early
1970s. He remained a member in good standing of Sumbeam [sic ?] Lodge #235, Prince
Hall Masons, Jackson, Tenn. For many years, he worked part time at Clark Memorial
Funeral Home in Roanoke and also at Wehadkee Yarn Mills. He was employed for 10
years at Roanoke Mills, Amoco Fabrics & Fibers Company, before retiring in 1991.

Jenny Gazaway
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Jenny Gazaway, 46, of Roanoke were Monday,
Dec. 19, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Carolyn
Hanner and Tim Whaley officiating. Burial was at Liberty East Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Gazaway died Sunday, Dec. 18, at her home.
A resident of Roanoke since 1975, Mrs. Gazaway was a native of Atlanta, born
Aug. 18, 1948, daughter of Jewett and Virginia Sudduth Christian. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Charles David Gazaway of Roanoke; two daughters,
Mrs. Julie Benefield and Mrs. Pam Addison, both of Roanoke; a son, Sgt. Tim Mulkey of
Fort Stewart, Ga.; her parents, Jewett and Virginia Sudduth Phillips [sic? - Christian?] of
Lawrenceville, Ga.; a grandmother, Edith Sudduth Phillips of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a
sister, Mrs. Penny Mote of Snellville, Ga.; a brother, Chris Christian of Lawrenceville,
Ga.; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be [sic - were] Douglas Gazaway, Tommy Burke, Clark Benefield,
Keith Benefield, Tommy Wylie and Neal Wylie.

Charles Edward Mays
(PRATTVILLE) Charles Edward Mays, 73, of Prattville, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 1994,
at Veterans Administration Hospital in Montgomery. He was a former resident of
Roanoke.
Funeral services for Mr. Mays were at one o'clock Thursday afternoon, Dec. 15, from
Prattville Memorial Chapel, with Dr. Travis Coleman officiating. Interment was in
Prattville Memory Gardens, with Prattville Memory Chapel directing.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Howard Mays of Prattville; one son, Ronald H. Mays
of Alabaster; two granddaughters, Leigh Ann Mays and Lindy Mays of Alabaster; and two
sisters, Clara Hughes of Wetumpka and Ann Wadsworth of Roanoke.
Mr. Mays was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of Prattville and a
veteran of the Korean Conflict and World War II. Honorary pallbearers were the Jimmy
Sanford Sunday School Class of his church.

Robert Lee Woodgett
(WEDOWEE) Robert Lee Woodgett, 75, of Wedowee died Saturday, Dec. 10, 1994.
Mr. Woodgett was born in Randolph County on May 26, 1919, son of the late Rufus
and Mary Ella Woodgett. He spent his early manhood in military service at Fort
McClellan, Ala., and Fort Benning, Ga., and spent the rest of his life farming and doing
various jobs.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Shirley Ann Woodgett, Mrs. Dianne
Woodgett-Walker of Columbus, Ga., and Mrs. Alida Woodgett-Stribling of Wedowee;
one son, Robert L. Woodgett Jr.; two brothers, Jimmie Lee Woodgett and T. L.
Woodgett of Wedowee; two sisters, Mattie B. Ware of Anniston and Ruby May White
of Trenton, N.J.; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services for Mr. Woodgett were at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at Canaan Baptist
Church Cemetery, with Rev. Clyde Jones officiating. Interment was in the church
cemetery.
Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Woodrow Lambert
(WADLEY) Funeral services for Woodrow Lambert, 81, of Route 1, Wadley, were
Monday, Dec. 19, 1994, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Harold
Bonner officiating. Burial was at Rock Springs Christian Church cemetery.
Mr. Lambert died Friday, Dec. 16, at his residence.
A Randolph County native, Mr. Lambert was born May 10, 1913, son of Bud and Iola
Bradford Lambert. He had worked as an auto mechanic.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Becky Barrett of Roanoke, Mrs. Yetta Cannon
of LaGrange, Ga., and Mrs. Faye Hall of Bowdon, Ga.; two sons, George Lambert and
Mackey Lambert, both of LaGrange; and 18 grandchildren.

Carrie Lee Watkins
(ROCK MILLS) Carrie Lee Watkins, 88, of Rock Mills died Thursday, Dec. 15, 1994,
at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke, after an extended illness.
Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. at Mount Carrie Baptist Church,
Franklin, Ga., with the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating. Burial was in Stateline Baptist
Church Cemetery, Glenn, Ga.
Mrs. Watkins was a native of Chambers County and the widow of the late Grady Lee
Watkins. She spent most of her life in Randolph County. Mrs. Watkins was a loyal
member of Mount Carrie Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Ms. Jessie Pearl Watkins of Rock Mills and a host of
nieces and nephews.

Grady Cather McDonald
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Grady Cather McDonald, 79, of Roanoke will be
held Wednesday, Dec. 21, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev.
S. T. Janney officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
Mr. McDonald died Monday, Dec. 19, at Southern Regional Hospital in Riverdale, Ga.
A longtime resident of Randolph County, Mr. McDonald was a Clay County native,
born Sept. 9, 1915, son of William and Sally Jane Carter McDonald. He had worked as a
weaver with Handley Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bessie Ward McDonald of Roanoke; a daughter, Mrs.
Janice Underwood of Riverdale; two grandchildren, Brittany Nicole Underwood and
Brandon Lee Underwood; and a brother, Lofton Gay McDonald of Austell, Ga.
The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 8 a.m. until the time of
the service on Wednesday.

Lucy Baldwin Pinkard
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Lucy Baldwin Pinkard, 86, of Roanoke were
Friday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, Revs. Franklin Foster, Tony
Moceri and Johnny Williams officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
Mrs. Pinkard died Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
A Randolph County native and lifelong resident of Roanoke, she was born Feb. 22,
1908, daughter of Edgar and Lura Henry Baldwin. She had worked with Handley Mills.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Smith of Roanoke and Mrs. Latha

Elizabeth Pauline Lloyd
(LAGRANGE, Ga.) Funeral services for Elizabeth Pauline Lloyd, 58, of LaGrange,
Ga., will be Thursday, Dec. 29, 1994, at 11 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with
the Rev. Steve Vickers officiating. Burial will follow at Forrester's Chapel Methodist
Church cemetery.
Mrs. Lloyd died Tuesday, Dec. 27, at West Georgia Medical Center after an extended
illness.
A native of Clay County, Mrs. Lloyd was born Oct. 16, 1936, daughter of John Tom
and Anna Bassett Mayo. She was a member of Edgewood Assembly of God, Columbus,
Ga.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Laughlin of Columbus; her mother, Mrs.
Anna Mayo Allen of LaGrange; four sisters, Mrs. Peggy Pater of Chicago, Ill., Mrs.
JoAnn Moon of Roanoke, Mrs. Martha Smith of LaFayette and Mrs. Carolyn Conger of
LaGrange; two grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 28.
Nephews of Mrs. Lloyd will serve as pallbearers.

Rosie Cofield
(ROANOKE) Rosie Cofield, 69, of Rt. 4, Roanoke died Saturday, Dec. 17, 1994, at
George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
Funeral services were at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Standing Rock, on Friday, Dec.
23, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. W. H. Trammell officiating. Interment was in the church
cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Brandford Cofield of Atlanta; one brother, Hubert Strong, Jr.,
of Franklin, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Sorrell of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mrs. Cofield was born in Chambers County May 9, 1925. She was a member of
Antioch Baptist Church, LaGrange, Ga.

Boss Heath
(ROANOKE) Boss Heath, 65, of Rt. 4, Roanoke (Mt. Olive community), died
Saturday, Dec. 24, 1994, at his residence.
Mr. Heath lived in the Roanoke area all of his life. He served eight years in the armed
forces and most recently worked for West Point Stevens, Lanett, as a machine operator.
On Jan. 2 he would have been officially retired. He was preceded in death by his parents,
the late Mr. and Mrs. Columbus and Rosetta (Trammell) Heath, and two sisters, Mrs.
Corine Burrow and Ms. Sara Lou Heath. He was a member of New Harmony Baptist
Church, LaFayette.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vera Heath of Roanoke; four aunts, Mrs. Mattie
Burrow of Roanoke, Mrs. Estella Briskey of LaFayette, Mrs. Flora Martin of Louisville,
Ky., and Mrs. Hattie Ray of Panama City, Fla.; three uncles, Jimmy Burrow, Rufus
Burrow and Charlie Smith of Roanoke; a special niece, Mrs. Joann Hopper of Roanoke;
and a large number of other nieces and nephews.

Mary Jean McCard
(ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jean McCard, 50, of Roanoke were
Tuesday, Dec. 27, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, Rev. S. T. Janney
officiating. Burial was at Big Springs Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. McCard died suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 24, at Randolph County Hospital.
A Randolph County native, she was born Dec. 17, 1944, daughter of Berry and Ester
P. Strickland Brown. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Sharon McCard of Roanoke; two sons, Allen
McCard and James McCard, both of Roanoke; four sisters, Ms. Bobbie Brown of
Roanoke, Ms. Frances Brown of Las Vegas, Nev., Mrs. Della Ruth Durham of Augusta,
Ga., and Mrs. Jimmie Lee Richardson of Bremen, Ga.; two brothers, George Brown and
Buddy Brown; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Johnny Burgess, Tim Bradley, Scott Brown, Edward Brown, Doyle
Brown and Johnny Hill.

Kim Elliott
(ELK CITY, Okla.) Kim Elliott, 32, of Elk City died Dec. 20, 1994, in Mercy Health
Center, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Mrs. Elliott was born Jan. 9, 1962, in Mildenhall, England, to Patsy and Bill Yearta.
She moved with her parents to Oklahoma in 1962 and graduated from high school in Elk
City in 1980. She received her degree from Southwestern State University and became a
teacher of special education.
Kim married Kevin Dell Elliott in 1986. She was a member of Elk City Church of the
Nazarene. Her maternal and paternal grandparents preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Kevin; daughters Stacia Rochelle Elliott and Mariah
KDee Elliott; son Ramsey Levi Elliott and her mother Patsy Smith, all of Elk City; her
father Bill Yearta of Roanoke, Ala.; one sister, Donna Sue Landtrhip of Houston, Tex.;
three brothers, Keith Yearta of Roanoke, David Yearta of Oklahoma City and Steven
Smith of Tulsa, Okla.; her step-father, Harold R. Smith of Guthrie, Okla.; and
three nieces, one nephew and a host of relatives and friends.
