OBITUARIES:

Janie Thrower Perry

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Janie Thrower Perry, 96, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
April 3, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Midway Methodist Church, with the Revs. Ridley Herren and 
Jamie Taylor officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Perry died Friday, April 2, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Perry was born July 20, 1902, in Tallapoosa 
County, daughter of James Ferris and Minnie Ashley Thrower.  She was a member of 
Midway Methodist Church and had been employed with Handley Mills.  Mrs. Perry was 
preceded in death by a son, James W. Perry, and a daughter, Joan Hopkins.
   Survivors include her husband, Oran Perry Sr. of Roanoke; four daughters, Faye Dillard 
of Americus, Ga., Dot Rombokas and Shirley Andrews of Roanoke and Dianne Tarver of 
Alexander City; two sons, Oran Perry Jr. and Bobby Perry of Roanoke; one sister, Ruth 
Childers of Mellow Valley; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and ten great-great- 
grandchildren.
   Grandsons served as pallbearers.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Annie Mae Wallis

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Annie Mae Wallis, 90, of Roanoke will be at 2 p.m. 
Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tex Ergle and 
the Rev. S. T. Janney officiating.  Burial will be at Green's Chapel Methodist Church 
Cemetery.
   Miss Wallis died Tuesday, April 6, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on Feb. 14, 1909, daughter of Wilson W. and Fannie 
Alabama Wallis.  She was a retired Handley High School teacher, having taught overseas 
in Germany and also in Georgia before retirement.  She was a charter member of Alpha 
Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and a member of First United Methodist Church 
of Roanoke.
   Survivors include several cousins.
   Pallbearers will be George Chambers, Ray Caldwell, Jimmy Young, Johnny Deason, 
Urban Dendinger and Greg Dendinger.
   Honorary pallbearers will be Junior Huey, Hoyt Waldrep and Alvin Chambers.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Gertrude Pinkard

   (WEDOWEE) Gertrude Pinkard, 79, of Wedowee died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at 
her residence.
   Funeral services were Saturday, April 3, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include her husband William T. Pinkard of Wedowee; two sons, John Pinkard 
of Wedowee and Tommy L. Pinkard; a daughter, Peggy Gooden of Wedowee; three 
brothers, J. C. Hill of Buffalo, N.Y., John Hill of Wedowee and Andrew Hill; eight 
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Minne Hill; one son, William 
Pinkard; and a sister, Ada Lee Stitt.
   Mrs. Pinkard was a devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church.  She was a retiree of 
Plantation Patterns, Wadley, where she worked for about 10 years.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Winford James Gosdin

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Winford James Gosdin, 79, of Woodland were at 
2 p.m. Friday, April 2, 1999, at Neighborhood House of Prayer, with the Rev. Gerald 
Sheppard and the Rev. T. J. Waldrep officiating.  Burial was at Flat Rock Methodist 
Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Gosdin died Wednesday, March 31, in Roanoke following an extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Woodland, he was born in Heard County, Ga., April 12, 1919, son 
of Pinky Marshall and Emma Maddox Gosdin.  He had been self-employed as a carpenter 
and farmer and was a member of Neighborhood House of Prayer.  He was preceded in 
death by a son, Wayne T. Gosdin.
   Survivors include his wife, Brooksie Lee Gosdin of Woodland; three daughters, Jeanette 
Taylor of Roanoke, June Ogletree of Standing Rock and Linda Clark of Broughton; one 
son, Charles Wendell Gosdin of Roanoke; three sisters Lois Bonds of Woodland, Lovie 
Christian of Vernon and Novice Sessions of Montgomery; one brother, Troy Gosdin of 
Ephesus, Ga.; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Annie Louise Bonner

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Funeral services for Annie Louise Bonner, 86, of LaGrange, Ga., 
formerly of Hickory Flat, were at 1 p.m. CST Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Standing Rock 
Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ed Grooms officiating.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Bonner died Thursday, April 1, at Florence Hand Nursing Home in LaGrange.
   She was born in Chambers County on March 2, 1913, daughter of Dan and Annie Bailey 
Holladay.  She was a homemaker and a member of Standing Rock Methodist Church.  She 
was preceded in death by her husband, Robert P. Bonner.
   Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Windsor of Riverview; two sons, Harold 
Bonner of Langdale and Floyd Bonner of LaGrange; one sister, Jewell Day of LaGrange; 
two brothers, I. D. Holladay of Marietta, Ga., and Calvin Holladay of Lanett; 
15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Joe Parker

   (LANETT) Joe Parker, 87, of Lanett died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, Beverly Health 
Care, Lanett.
   Survivors include two sons, Bobby Joe Parker and Jimmy Parker of Lanett; three 
daughters, Joyce Fuller of Warren, Pa., Helen King of West Point, Ga., and Betty Harmon 
of Lanett; a sister, Neomi Parker of Decatur; nine grandchildren and 11 great- 
grandchildren.
   Mr. Parker was born in Wedowee on July 11, 1911, son of the late Martha Ella Bolt 
Parker and Echanautis C. Parker.  He was a retired employee of West Point Pepperell's 
Lanett Mill and a member of Ava Methodist Church, Wedowee.
   Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Lanett at 
2 p.m. Friday, April 2, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.  The Rev. Wallace Bell 
officiated.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home of Lanett.

Annie Mae Woodgett

   (WEDOWEE) Annie Mae Woodgett, 51, of Wedowee died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at 
Wedowee Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
   Funeral services were at Pine Flat Primitive Baptist Church, Wedowee, on Sunday, April 
4, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Knight officiating.  Interment was in Stephen Mission 
United Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Survivors are her husband, Jack McKissic of Wedowee; three daughters, Mrs. Felecia 
Houston and Ms. Christy Woodgett of Wedowee and Ms. Debra Woodgett of 
Birmingham; her father, John Knight of Wedowee; one sister, Mrs. Cora L. Scott of 
Kileen, Texas; two brothers, John William Knight and Troy Knight of Wedowee; eight 
grandchildren; two aunts, three uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
   Mrs. Woodgett was a faithful member of Stephen Mission United Methodist Church.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home of LaFayette.

Carless I. Cooley

   (GRAHAM) Carless I. Cooley, 87, of Route 1, Graham, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, 
at Carrollton Manor Nursing Home, Carrollton, Ga.
   Mr. Cooley was born April 9, 1911, in Randolph County, son of the late Annie Lynn 
Cooley.  He was retired from Bremen-Bowdon Investment Company and was a member 
and deacon of Goldridge Baptist Church and a member of Graham Lodge #354, F&AM.
   Survivors include his wife, Lottie Saxon Cooley of Graham; a son, Sammy Joe Cooley 
of Graham; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at 1 p.m. EST on Saturday, April 3, at Goldridge Baptist Church, 
with the Revs. Ray Runyan and Kenneth Rooks officiating.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery.
   Pallbearers were Mark Cooley, Talon Cooley, Sonny Maner, Randy Saxon, Roger Gibbs 
and Tommy Chupp.
   Arrangements were by Rainwater & West Funeral Home, Bowden, Ga.

Virgil C. Yarbrough

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Virgil C. Yarbrough Sr., 76, of LaGrange, Ga., died Saturday, 
April 3, 1999, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after a brief illness.
   Mr. Yarbrough was born March 14, 1923, in Randolph County, Ala., son of Thomas 
Washington and Julia Savannah Moore Yarbrough.  He was retired from the Kex Plant of 
Milliken and Company after 35 years and has lived in LaGrange for the past 46 years.  He 
was a Baptist and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
   Services were Monday, April 5, at 4 p.m. at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, 
with the Rev. Bobby Robinson officiating.  Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Frances B. Yarbrough of LaGrange, three daughters, 
Charlotte Sheets of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Edna Edmondson of Lanett and Nora Yarbrough 
of LaGrange; one son, Carlton Yarbrough of LaGrange; eight grandchildren and nine 
great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Gay of Roanoke and Lera Davis of LaGrange; and 
several nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements were by Hunter-Allen-Myhand, LaGrange.

Eunie Bonner Carden

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Eunie Bonner Carden, 86, of Roanoke were at 3 p.m. 
Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Roanoke First Baptist Church, with Dr. Doug Turner and the 
Rev. Bill Dean officiating.  Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Carden died Thursday, April 1, at Hospice LaGrange.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born May 19, 1912, daughter of 
Robert Whitten and Flora Bishop Bonner.  She had been employed at Palm Beach 
Company and was a member of Roanoke First Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death 
by her husband, Olin Carden.
   Survivors include one son, Jimmy Carden of Roanoke; nine grandchildren and seven 
great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Bunyan Elon Pope

   (TALLADEGA) Services for Bunyan Elon Pope, 93, of Talladega were Thursday, 
April 1, 1999, at Usrey Funeral Home, Talladega, with the Revs. Ruth VanLillian and 
Darrell Brown officiating.  Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.
   Mr. Pope died Tuesday, March 30, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Daisy Pope of Talladega; a son, Elon Pope of Talladega; and 
a sister, Doris P. Taylor of Rock Stand.
   Pallbearers were Rodney Taylor, Jimmy Matson, Carl Matson, Ryan Matson, Timmy 
Matson and Carlton Langley.  Honorary pallbearers were Dave Dothard, Larry Forrest, 
Steve Forrest and Loyce Harris.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Pope lived in Talladega since 1940.  He was a member 
of Bemiston Baptist Church and retired from Bemis Co.  He was a member of Masonic 
Lodge 261 and helped organize the Talladega Rescue Squad.
   Arrangements were by Usrey Funeral Home, Talladega.

Catherine Turner

   (WEDOWEE) Catherine Turner, 65, of Wedowee died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, 
at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Survivors include her parents, Raymond and Augusta Marsh; her husband, Howard 
Turner of Wedowee; three sons, Jeffery Turner of Okinawa, Iowa, Larry Arthur Turner of 
Roanoke, and Wayne Turner of Wedowee; two daughters, Susan McClendon of Decatur, 
Ga., and Sharon Kay Turner of Roanoke: a brother, Wesley Marsh of Detroit, Mich., 
three sisters, Jimmie Rogers and Mary Gaddis of Detroit and Betty Mays of Atlanta; and 
nine grandchildren.
   Mrs. Turner was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church, Wedowee.  She 
was a retired employee of Terry Manufacturing Company in Roanoke.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service.

Lucille May

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Lucille May, 76, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
April 10, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Midway Methodist Church with Revs. Cloyse Johnson 
and Sara Corson officiating.  Burial followed at the church cemetery.
   Ms. May died Thursday, April 8, at University Hospital in Birmingham.
   A former Gadsden resident, Ms. May was a Randolph County native, born April 13, 
1923, daughter of Acie C. and Willie Lucinda Abbot May.  She was a member of Midway 
Methodist Church and had worked as a secretary with Goodyear.
   Survivors include five sisters, Eula Hester and Alma May of Five Points, Velma 
Waldrop of LaGrange, Ga., Virginia Windsor of Wadley and Wilma Wilkerson of 
Wilsonville; and a brother, Bobby May of Tallassee.
   Nephews served as pallbearers.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, was in charge of arrangements.

William Jep Brown

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Funeral services for William Jep Brown, 73, of Alexander City 
were Friday, April 9, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Radney's Funeral Home Chapel, Alexander City, 
with the Rev. Reuben Prater officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens, 
Roanoke.
   Mr. Brown died Wednesday, April 7, at Russell Medical Center, Alexander City.
   A native of Roanoke, Mr. Brown was born Dec. 17, 1925, son of the late Charlie C. and 
Clemmie Pearl Young Brown.  He worked for 35 years at Handley Mills in Roanoke, 
where he was a supervisor.  Mr. Brown was a veteran of World War II, a member of the 
Alabama National Guard, a special deputy sheriff in Chambers County, and an auxiliary 
police officer in Roanoke.  He lived in the Roanoke area for 40 years.
   Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Betty Lee Davis Brown of Alexander City; a son, 
Larry Brown of Alexander City; a daughter, Regina Bowen of Alexander City; four 
sisters, Lillie Cooper of Rock Mills, Flossie Waldrep and Mary Neil Daniel of Roanoke 
and Dot Maples of Bessemer; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Mr. 
Brown was preceded in death by a sister, Lonnie Hand; two brothers, Charlie C. Brown 
Jr. and Buddy Brown; and a grandson, Frankie Bowen II.
   Arrangements were by Radney's Funeral Home, Alexander City.

Curtis Harold Barber

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Curtis Harold Barber, 70, of Wadley, formerly of 
Opelika, were Saturday, April 10, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Frederick's Funeral Home Chapel, 
Opelika, with Elder Kenneth Perry officiating.  Burial followed in Garden Hills Cemetery.
   Mr. Barber, who died Wednesday, April 7, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, 
was born Dec. 20, 1928, in Prattville.  He was a loving father and had a good sense of 
humor.  Mr. Barber was employed by Southern United Life Insurance Company before 
retirement.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Blanche Barber.
   He is survived by four daughters, Carol Dickerson of Auburn, Gloria Detmer and Toni 
Herd of Opelika and Gladys Arunachalam of Petaluma, Calif.; one son, Allen Barber of 
Wadley; one sister, Margie Patrick of Prattville; 10 grandchildren and two great- 
grandchildren.
   Frederick's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Delaware Smith

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Delaware Smith, 78, of Wedowee were Sunday, 
April 11, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Roger Florence 
officiating.  Burial was at Midway Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Smith died Thursday, April 8, at Wedowee Hospital.
   A former resident of Lakeland, Fla., Mr. Smith was an Etowah County native, born 
March 27, 1921, son of Will and Maggie Moon Smith.  He was a World War II veteran 
and a dairy farmer.
   Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Woodruff Smith of Wedowee; three daughters, 
Linda Richardson and Evelyn Waites of Wedowee and Ruth "Little Bit" Smith of 
Kathalee, Fla.; three sons, James Larry Smith of Lakeland, and Danny Dewayne Smith and 
Michael Smith, both of Wedowee; 17 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Michael Waites, Bruce Anderson, Larry Anderson, Curtis Wayne 
Scarbary Sr., Curtis Wayne Scarbary Jr., Barry Florence and Kenneth Messer.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Alice Janell Owens

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Alice Janell Owens, 59, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
April 13, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Phillip Patterson 
officiating.  Burial was at Flat Rock Methodist Church cemetery.
   Mrs. Owens died Saturday, April 10, at her home after an extended illness.
   A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, Mrs. Owens was born July 12, 1939, 
daughter of Jay Hue and Talitha Lipp Burke.  She was a homemaker and a member of 
New Life Center Church of God.
   Survivors include her husband, James "Pete" Owens of Roanoke; three daughters, Debra 
Veal, Jennifer George and Karen Beluscak of Roanoke; two sons, Donald Owens and 
Curtis Owens of Roanoke; three sisters, Margaret Burke, Ruth Rushing and Lois Wilson, 
all of Woodland; two brothers, Wallace Burke and Wayne Burke, both of Rock Mills; 
11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Edward Barrett, Doug Smith, Nick Burke, Ervin Barrett, Mike Pike 
and Stephen Fields.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Gerson Bonner Henry

   (SPLENDORA, Texas) Funeral services for Gerson Bonner Henry, 66, of Splendora, 
Texas, formerly of Randolph County, were Tuesday, April 13, 1999, at 10 a.m. at 
Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Johnny Young officiating.  Burial was at 
Broughton Ridge cemetery.
   Mr. Henry died Thursday, April 8, at his home.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Henry was born Feb. 14, 1933, son of George Wyatt 
"Buddy" and Mary "Molly" Jeanette Mitchum Henry.  He had worked as a longshoreman.
   Survivors include two daughters, Kimmie Hall of Cleveland, Texas, and Tammie Harper 
of Valley; four sisters, Pearl Mays and Margie Schliep of Atlanta, and Iva Folsom and 
Virginia Pike of Roanoke; two brothers Glenn Henry of Rock Mills and Jimmy Henry of 
Valley; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Velon Leon Williams

   (UNION CITY, Ga.) Velon Leon Williams of Union City, Ga., died Thursday, 
April 8, 1999.
   He was a member of King's Gospel Singers for more than 33 years and a member of the 
Kent and Leon Flint River Boys.  He always thought of others before himself and was 
loved by many friends.
   Surviving are his wife, Annette; sons, Randy Williams, Ricky Williams and Greg 
Williams; brothers, Blake Williams and Thamous Williams; sisters, Etherene Smith and 
Dera Merrell; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Funeral services were Sunday, April 11, at 4 p.m. EDT at Smyrna Baptist Church in 
Newell, with interment in the church cemetery.
   Pallbearers were Steve Pike, Jerry Pike, Gary Pike, Tim Henry, Manley Henry, Norman 
Milner, and Jamie Henry.
   Arrangements were by Higgins & Son Funeral Home, Fairburn, Ga.

April Mae Bowen (Infant)

   (WEDOWEE) Graveside funeral services for infant April Mae Bowen of Wedowee will 
be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Jordan's Chapel Cemetery in Newell, with the 
Rev. Julian Murphy officiating.
   She died April 10 at Wedowee Hospital.  She was preceded in death by her grandfather, 
Clarence Son Bowen.
   Survivors include her parents, Bobby and Cheryl Bowen of Wedowee; one sister, 
Heather Renee Bowen of Wedowee; four brothers, Jason, Nicholas and Matthew Bowen 
of Wedowee and Bobby M. Bowen of Opelika; and grandparents, Frankie Bowen of 
LaGrange and James Curtis and Phyllis Stone of LaFayette.

OBITUARIES:

Miriam Mann Osment

   (BIRMINGHAM) Miriam Mann Osment, 85, a resident of Birmingham since 1940, died 
Friday, April 16, 1999, after a short illness.
   She was a native of Roanoke, a graduate of Handley High School and attended Cox 
College in College Park, Ga.  She was retired from Moore-Handley Inc. after 40 years of 
employment.  She was a member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, active in WMU, and 
also attended the Joy Sunday School Class.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Eugene Francis Osment; her father, William Handley Mann Sr.; her mother, Verna Pittman 
Mann; and her brother, William Handley Mann Jr.
   She is survived by her niece, Judy Mann Beard of Birmingham; a grandniece; two great- 
grandnephews; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; a step-son; three step-granddaughters; 
and two step-grandsons.
   Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, April 19, at Ridout's Valley Chapel with 
burial at Elmwood Cemetery.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to the Miriam Osment 
Memorial Fund at Mountain Brook Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were provided by Ridout's Valley Chapel, Homewood.

Betty Alsabrook Thomas

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Betty Alsabrook Thomas, 59, of Roanoke were 
Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bernard 
Brown officiating.  Burial followed at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Thomas died Saturday, April 17, at LaGrange Hospice.
   A former resident of Clewiston, Fla., Mrs. Thomas was born Aug. 30, 1939, in Troup 
County, Ga., daughter of Charlie and Hattie Brown Alsabrook.  She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Billy Thomas.
   Survivors include three daughters, Betty Carol Thompson of Cross City, Fla., Teresa 
Ann Butzer of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Gloria Denise McGee of Clewiston; three sons, 
Johnny Thomas and Christopher Thomas, both of Tallahassee, Fla., and Allen Thomas of 
Cross City; her mother, Hattie Brown Alsabrook of Roanoke; one sister, Jacquline Manley 
of Roanoke; and 11 grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were David Hodges, Donald Hodges, Aaron Hinson, Craig Manley, James 
Alsabrook and Stanley Thomas.

Norma Jean Joiner

   (ROANOKE) Norma Jean Joiner, 43, of Roanoke died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at 
Hospice LaGrange, LaGrange, Ga.
   Funeral services were Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m. at Deliverance Temple Church of 
God, Roanoke, with Elder Kenneth Bryant officiating.  Burial was in Skyview Memorial 
Gardens Cemetery, Welch.
   Survivors include her husband, Billy Joiner of Roanoke; her parents, Bishop C. L. 
Wilkes and Mrs. Shirley Wilkes of Roanoke; a son, Larry Kelley Jr. of Roanoke; three 
daughters, Lucretia Nichole Kelley, Teresa Michelle Kelley and Kim Lee Kelley of 
Roanoke; two brothers, Curtis Lawrence Buggs of Gadsden and Henry Charles Wilkes of 
Roanoke; six sisters, Lola W. Gray of Birmingham, Johnnie Mae Wilkes, Kelly Ann 
Phillips, Sarah Louise Brown and Dorothy Marie Tucker of Roanoke and Syretta Lorraine 
Revels of Seattle, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Louis Wilkes, Jr.
   Mrs. Joiner, affectionately called "Tina" by all her friends and loved ones, was an 
employee of Roanoke Mills, Amoco Fabrics and Fibers.  She was a faithful member of 
Deliverance Temple Church of the Living God in Roanoke, founded and pastored by her 
father, Bishop C. L. Wilkes.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Blake Edford Williams

   (LAFAYETTE) Funeral services for Blake Edford Williams, 72, of LaFayette were at 
1 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, 1999, at Smyrna Baptist Church.  Burial was in the church 
cemetery.  Bro. Edwin Williams, Pastor Rex Williams, and the Rev. Joel McLeroy 
officiated.
   Mr. Williams died April 15 at Randolph County Hospital following an extended illness.
   He was born in Randolph County on Nov. 6, 1926, son of Onie and Loell Rice Williams.  
He had been employed at West Point Foundry and was a veteran of World War II.  He 
was a member of the Civitan Club of West Point and Smyrna Baptist Church and was a 
Mason.
   Survivors include his wife, Mavis Williams of LaFayette; one daughter, Melanie Kelley 
of Lanett; a son, Ronald Williams of Colorado; a step-son, Brian Eastwood of LaFayette; 
two sisters, Dera Merrill and Etherean Williamson of Graham; a brother, Thamous 
Williams of Heflin; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were nephews.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Claudia W. Prather

   (LANETT) Funeral services for Claudia W. Prather, 98, of Lanett were at 3 p.m. 
Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Almond Methodist Church, with the Rev. Joe Mallory 
officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Prather died Tuesday, April 20, at LaFayette Nursing Home.
   She was born in Randolph County on Dec. 25, 1900, daughter of James Riley and Edna 
Pearl Wilkerson.  She had been employed as a lunchroom worker at Wadley High School 
and was a member of Almond Methodist Church.
   Survivors include a sisters [sic], Mrs. Roy L. Rice of Valley; two step-sons, Gordon 
Prather of Opelika and Glenn Prather of Lanett; and several nieces and nephews.

Lonie Lanier Herren

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Lonie Lanier Herren, 83, of Woodland were at 
2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Herren's Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Ridley 
Parmer and Paul Widener officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Herren died Thursday, April 22, at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.
   She was born in Carroll County, Ga., on Sept. 15, 1915, daughter of Buford and Emily 
Bishop Lanier.  She was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught for 40 years at 
Waco, Bowdon and Unity, Ga., was active in church and community groups and 
programs, was a member of the Home Demonstration Club and a member of Herren's 
Grove Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Willis B. "Uncle Sap" Herren of Woodland; two sisters, 
Brooksie Anderson and Helen Lovvorn, both of Bowdon; a brother, Leonard Lanier of 
Newnan, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Wesley Herren, Jason Merrill, Steve Lovvorn, Matt Herren, David 
Johnson and Joe Harrel Mote.

Eura Wilson Clack

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Eura Wilson Clack, 88, of Roanoke were Tuesday, 
April 27, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Frank Barnes Jr. and Steve 
Barnes officiating.  Burial followed at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Clack died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Clack was born Jan. 27, 1911, daughter of 
Walter Winfield and Sarah Elizabeth Moore Wilson.  She was a homemaker.  Her 
husband, William B. Clack, preceded her in death.
   Survivors include two daughters, Janice Barnes of Smith Station and Sarah Jean 
Satterwhite of Roanoke; two sons, Thomas Clack of Pierre, S.D., and Manley Clack of 
Roanoke; two sisters, Mary Sabo of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Rebecca Smith of 
Roanoke; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tony Smith, Danny Cooper, Marshall Wilson, Perry Wilson, Paul 
Romine and Joe Lambert.

Betsey "Betty" Eva Knight

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Betsey "Betty" Eva Knight, 72, of Wedowee will be 
at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy East, 
Chris Mitchell and Gold Cofield officiating.  Burial will follow at Fellowship Baptist 
Church in the Bacon Level community.
   Mrs. Knight died Sunday, April 25, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke following an 
extended illness.
   She was born in Cranson, R.I., on March 1, 1927, daughter of Alfred Samuel and Viola 
Maretta Caswell Shaw.   Mrs. Knight had been employed as an LPN at Traylor Nursing 
Home, was a member of the WMU, King's Daughters of Rhode Island, and a member of 
Calvary Baptist Church.  Mrs. Knight had three special children who lived with her, Ray, 
Faye and Mae Williamson.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Herman 
Knight.
   Survivors include one brother, William Shaw of West Warrick, R.I.; a brother and 
sister-in-law, Bill and Peggy Thrasher of Wedowee; and two sisters-in-law.
   Mrs. Knight will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
   Memorials may be floral or donations can be made to the Baptist Children's Home, 
1130 Woodstock Ave., Anniston, AL 3207.
   Pallbearers will be deacons of Calvary Baptist Church.  Honorary pallbearers will be 
Charles Dawson, Jim Springer, Lee Harley, Gary Holloway, Phillip Waites and Manuel 
Smith.

Horace Luther 'Bo' Young

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Horace Luther "Bo" Young, 81, of Roanoke were 
Sunday, April 25, 1999, at 2 p.m. at High Pine Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bobby 
Kirby and Frank Foster officiating.  Burial followed at the church cemetery.
   Mr. Young died Friday, April 23, at his home.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Young was born June 21, 1917, son of 
William Luther and Lera Brown Young.  He was a World War II army veteran, a member 
of High Pine Baptist Church and had been employed with Handley Mills.
   Survivors include his wife, Lurline Pullen Young of Roanoke; one daughter, Toni 
Brown of Athens, Ala.; one son, Jimmy Young of Roanoke; six grandchildren; six 
great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law.
   Pallbearers were Pace Cole, Anthony Bearden, Chip Cofield, Chris Brown, Russell 
Vineyard and Jimmy Bozeman.

Glenda Mae Arrington

   (TALLADEGA) Funeral services for Glenda Mae Arrington, 49, of Talladega were 
Sunday, April 25, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Chapel of Wedowee with the Rev. 
Bill Calhoun officiating.  Burial followed at Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Miss Arrington died Saturday, April 24, at Lineville Nursing Facility following an 
extended illness.
   Miss Arrington was a native of Randolph County, born Aug. 14, 1949, the daughter of 
Otis and Lois Mae Noles Arrington.  She was a member of Valley Haven and the 
McKinney Learning Center.  She was also a member of Big Springs Baptist Church.  She 
was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Johnny Ray Arrington.
   Survivors include two sisters, Jane Bolt of Five Points and Linda Mann of Talladega; 
two brothers, Donald Arrington of Phenix City and Wendell Arrington of LaGrange, Ga.
   Pallbearers were Brian Walker, James Gallops, Phillip Arrington, Greg Arrington, Mike 
Cox and Thomas Sims.

Mae Fena Ogle Parker

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Funeral services for Mae Fena Ogle Parker, 76, of Bowdon, Ga., 
were Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church 
with the Revs. Dorsey White and Leron Murphy officiating.  Burial followed at the 
adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Parker died Saturday, April 24, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Parker was born Feb. 17, 1923, daughter of John T. 
and Ada Huddleston Key.  She was a member of Union Hill Congregational Methodist 
Church.  Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Kitchens, and two 
brothers, Shelley Key and Virgil Key.
   Survivors include her husband, Harwell Parker of Bowdon, Ga.; two sisters, Betty 
Graham of Wedowee and Myrtle Pettus of Oxford; three brothers, Raymond Key of 
Roanoke, Clarence Key of Wedowee and Erdis Key of Oxford.
   Pallbearers were Scott Nicholson, Randy Sheppard, Jack Key, Steve Key, Shane 
McCord, Alvin Milstead, Larry Simons, Eldon Key and Lawrence Key.

Reggie Don Caviness

   (RIPLEY, Miss.) Reggie Don Caviness, 59, of Ripley Miss., died Saturday, April 24, 
1999, at his home.
   The funeral service was Monday, April 26, at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with the 
Rev. Bill Connolly officiating.  Burial was at Flat Rock Cemetery.
   Mr. Caviness was a graduate of Mississippi State University.  He was a member of 
Ripley Presbyterian Church, a retired school teacher and coach for 35 years.  Mr. Caviness 
taught and coached at Moorehead, Miss., Woodland, Ala., Blue Mountain, Miss., and 
Ripley schools and was Mississippi Girls All Star Basketball coach.  He served in the 
Mississippi National Guard.  Mr. Caviness was preceded in death by his father, George 
Caviness.
   Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Corbeau Caviness of Ripley; two sons, Robert Caviness 
of Cordova, Tenn., and Don Caviness of Ripley; his mother, Marie Shankles Caviness of 
Blue Mountain; one sister, Ruth Caviness Albritton of Roanoke; and three nephews.
   Pallbearers were Karl Gaillard, Keith Gaillard, Kerry Gaillard, Wayne Chase, James 
Moody and Thomas Grisham.

John Judson 'Jay' Darbie

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for John Judson "Jay" Darbie, 13, of Roanoke will be 
Friday, April 30, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Scott 
Hannah officiating.  Burial will follow at Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
   The youth died Tuesday, April 27, at Hospice LaGrange after an extended illness.
   Jay was born May 8, 1985, in Marathon, Fla.  He was a seventh grade student at 
Handley Middle School and a member of Big Springs Baptist Church.
   He is survived by his mother, Laura Brown Darbie of Roanoke; his father, Cliff Darbie 
of Milton, Fla., grandparents, Judson and Johnnie Brown of Roanoke and John Darbie of 
Pensacola, Fla.; great-grandmother, Mary Hester Brown of Roanoke; one brother, Taylor 
Darbie of Roanoke; and several aunts and uncles.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, from 6 to 8 
p.m. Wednesday, April 28, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 29.

Dewey Elder

   (LAFAYETTE) Funeral services for Dewey Elder, 85, of LaFayette were Monday, 
April 26, 1999, at 4 p.m. CDT at New Hope Christian Church in Chambers County with 
the Rev. Wayne Greathouse officiating.  Burial was at the church cemetery.
   Mr. Elder died Saturday, April 24, at his residence.
   A native of Chambers County, Mr. Elder was born Aug. 7, 1913.  He was retired from 
the Electrolux Corporation after 50 years of service and led the singing at New Hope 
Christian Church for more than 50 years.  He was also a Mason.
   Survivors include two stepsons, Rev. Wayne Greathouse of West Point, Ga., and 
Ronald Greathouse of Opelika; five step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; 
a sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Annie Lou Cottle Calhoun

   (FAYETTEVILLE, Ga.) Funeral services for Annie Lou Cottle Calhoun, 83, of 
Fayetteville, Ga., formerly of Roanoke, will be Thursday, April 29, 1999, at 2 p.m. at 
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Craft, Doug Brown and Clarence 
Hodges officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Calhoun died Tuesday, April 27, at Fayetteville.
   A native of the Broughton community in Randolph County, Mrs. Calhoun was born July 
15, 1915, daughter of James and Annie Brown Cottle.  She was a member of Pleasant 
Grove Baptist Church and had been employed with Handley Mills.  She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Romer E. "Red" Calhoun.
   Survivors include a daughter, Annette Brown of Fayetteville; one sister, Mildred Waller 
of Roanoke; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, from 2:30 to 8 
p.m. Wednesday, April 28.  Mrs. Calhoun will lie in state at the church for one hour 
beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday.
   The family suggests memorials be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building 
Fund.
   Pallbearers will be Eric Wood, Calvin Turner, Ford Swindle, Wayne Brown, Gary Clark 
and Mike Sorrell.
