OBITUARIES:

Linzie Paul Johnson

     (BOWDON, Ga.) Linzie Paul Johnson, 80, of Bowdon, Ga., died Saturday, Sept. 3, 
1994, at Bowdon Area Hospital following a lengthy illness.
     Mr. Johnson was born in Cleburne County, Ala., June 25, 1914, the son of the late 
William (Will) Robert and Lovie Jane Stewart Johnson. He was a lifelong resident of this 
area, a member of Goldridge Baptist Church and a retired security guard at 
Bremen-Bowdon Investment Co.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Addie Richardson Johnson of Bowdon; two sons, 
Troy Johnson of Bowdon and Robert Johnson of Lanett; eight grandchildren and 
10 great-grandchildren.
     Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 5, at 2 p.m. EDT from Goldridge Baptist Church, 
with Rev. W. M. Wiggins and Rev. Ray Runyan officiating. Interment was in the church 
cemetery.
     Rainwater-West Funeral Home of Bowdon was in charge of arrangements.

Ellen Young Walls

     (WHITESBURG, Ga.) Ellen Young Walls, 72, of Whitesburg, Ga., died Sept. 1, 1994. 
She was a native of Randolph County, Ala., and a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church 
of Douglasville, Ga.
     Mrs. Young is survived by her husband, Curtis C. Walls of Whitesburg; two daughters, 
Linda Aikens of Hiram, Ga., and Rachel Goolsby of Whitesburg; two brothers, Bud 
Young of Oxford, Ala., and Hookie Young of Roanoke, Ala.; one sister, Lucille Spradlin 
of LaGrange, Ga.; and five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nephews.
     Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 3, at 11 a.m. from Whitley-Garner Chapel, with 
Rev. Vernon Willis, Rev. J. A. King and Rev. Earl Rollins officiating. Interment was at 
1 p.m. CDT in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.
     Whitley-Garner Funeral Home, Douglasville, was in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Odell Parrish

     (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Bessie Odell Parrish, 78, of Roanoke were 
Saturday, Sept. 3, 1994, at 11 a.m. from Concord Primitive Baptist Church cemetery, with 
Rev. Frank Sledge officiating.
     Miss Parrish died Thursday, Sept. 1, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
     A Randolph County native, she was born Aug. 20, 1916, daughter of J. W. and Nannie 
Lue Hester Parrish. She was a former employee of the Palm Beach Company.
     Miss Parrish is survived by two sisters, Miss Dorothy Parrish and Mrs. Mary Will 
Adcock, both of Roanoke.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Henry Herman Knight

     (WEDOWEE) Henry Herman Knight, 64, of Route 2, Wedowee, died Thursday, 
Sept. 1, 1994, at his residence after an extended illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel, 
with Revs. Roger Florence and O'Dell Bryant officiating. Burial was in the Fellowship 
Baptist Church cemetery.
     Mr. Knight is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betsey Knight of Wedowee, and three sisters, 
Mrs. Miriam Helen Werner of Palmetto, Ga., Mrs. Peggy Thrasher of Wedowee and Mrs. 
Ruth Kopf of Sacramento, Calif.
     Pallbearers were nephews.
     Mr. Knight, a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, was a member of Rock 
Springs Christian Church and was retired from Amoco.
     Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Olin Emory Sheppard

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Rev. Olin Emory Sheppard, 80, of Roanoke will be 
Wednesday, Sept. 7, 1994, at 2 p.m. from New Hope Congregational Christian Church in 
Chambers County, with Rev. Roy Bain, Dr. Roger Knight and Dr. Douglas Turner 
officiating. Entombment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke.
     The Rev. Mr. Sheppard died Monday, Sept. 5, at West Georgia Medical Center in 
LaGrange.
     A longtime resident of Roanoke, he was a native of Heard County, Ga., born Dec. 10, 
1913, son of A. H. and Dovie Harry Sheppard. He was a member of the Roanoke Masonic 
Lodge, the Roanoke Lions Club and New Hope Congregational Christian Church, where 
he served as pastor for more than 30 years. He had retired after 40 years as city clerk of 
Roanoke and served also as secretary-treasurer of the Roanoke Utilities Board.
     Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Linda Ellen Yarbrough of Roanoke; a son, Emory 
Sheppard of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Blanche Mathis of Franklin, Ga., 
and Mrs. Betty Jane Crockett of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Hillis Sheppard of Roanoke 
and Harry Sheppard of Wedowee; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
     The body will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
     In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to one's favorite charity.
     Pallbearers will be John Schuessler, Bill Harvel, Bill Montgomery, Recel Pike, Tommy 
Hill and Herbert Swann.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Idella Gibson

     (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Idella Dell Gibson, 70, of LaGrange died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 
1994, at her residence after a short illness.
     The funeral service was at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, at 2 p.m. Friday, 
Sept. 2, with Rev. Stanley Yarbrough officiating. Interment was in Restlawn Memory 
Gardens, LaGrange.
     Mrs. Gibson was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Coweta County, Ga., daughter of Jack and 
Annie Mae Harrison Gaddy. A resident of LaGrange most of her life, she was retired from 
Unity Plant of Milliken Company and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church, Corinth, 
Ga.
     Survivors include two daughters, Karen Lewis of Griffin, Ga., and Gayle Thompson of 
Roanoke, Ala.; two sons, Kenneth Gibson of Franklin, Ga., and Mickey Gibson of 
LaGrange; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Lancaster of LaGrange and Mrs. Peggy Fomby of 
Hogansville, Ga.; one brother, Howard Bo Gaddy of Hogansville; 10 grandchildren and 
eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
     Arrangements were by Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home, LaGrange.

Willie Mae Lambert Rives

     (ROANOKE) Mrs. Willie Mae Lambert Rives, widow of the late Benjamin Allen Rives 
III, died at Randolph County Hospital on Sept. 2, 1994.
     Surviving Mrs. Rives are one daughter, Susanna Nicholson; one son, Dr. Ben Rives 
IV; four grandchildren, Benjamin Allen Nicholson, Joseph Rives Nicholson, Benjamin 
Allen Rives V and Catherine Corine Rives; and one sister, Mrs. Joseph Hannah.
     Mrs. Rives had been active in the religious and civic life of Roanoke as a longtime 
member of the Roanoke Literary Club and teacher in the Primary Department of First 
Methodist Church for several years.
     She taught in Roanoke City Schools for 37 years, serving as principal of Handley 
Elementary for three years before retirement. She attended Georgia College in 
Milledgeville and received a B.S. and master's degree in education from Auburn 
University.
     Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at Roanoke First United 
Methodist Church, with graveside services following at Cedarwood Cemetery, Rev. 
Milton Booth officiating.
     The family requests that no flowers be sent, suggesting instead that memorial gifts be 
made to First United Methodist Church, Roanoke.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

OBITUARIES:

Denson Lamb

     (LAFAYETTE) Denson Lamb, 81, of LaFayette died Monday, Sept. 5, 1994, at East 
Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
     Mr. Lamb was born in Chambers County on Sept. 14, 1912. He was a devoted 
husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a retired carpenter and member of 
Carpenters Local 225 in Atlanta.
     Survivors include his wife, Judy Lamb of LaFayette; one daughter, Drusilla Abernathy 
of LaFayette; one son, Curtis Lamb of LaFayette; two sisters, Mae Lankford and Lynda 
Lamb of LaFayette; one brother, Perry C. Lamb of Stroud; and two grandchildren, Robin 
Cottle of Roanoke and Bryan Lamb of LaFayette.
     Funeral services for Mr. Lamb were at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at LaFayette 
Church of Christ, with Ministers Gerald Romine and Eddie Ferrell officiating. 
Entombment was in a mausoleum at Resthaven Cemetery in Lanett.
     Pallbearers were Phillip Cottle of Roanoke, Ronnie Fly of Jackson, Tenn., Eddie 
Thompson of Cullman, Edwin Climer of Decaturville, Tenn., James Perry Lamb of Jasper 
and Bobby Coffman of Jackson, Tenn.
     Arrangements were by Sanders Funeral Home, LaFayette.

William J. Bill Hendon

    (WEDOWEE) William J. Bill Hendon, 70, of Wedowee died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1994, 
in East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after a short illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the First Baptist Church of 
Wedowee, with Revs. John Duncan and Bob Karcher officiating. Burial was in Wedowee 
City Cemetery.
     Mr. Hendon is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Betty Mayfield of Savannah, Ga., and Ms. 
Virginia Hendon of Opelika, and by several nieces and nephews.
     Mr. Hendon was a native of Randolph County, son of Ira G. Hendon and Roxie 
Cofield Hendon. He lived in Montgomery for 35 years and was retired from Turner 
Insurance and Bonding Company of Montgomery. He was a veteran of World War II, 
a graduate of Auburn University and a member of Wedowee First Baptist Church.
     Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Lewis Wright

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Lewis Wright, 86, of Roanoke were Thursday, 
Sept. 8, 1994, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs. Gary Baugh and 
Russell Calhoun officiating. Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
     Mr. Wright died Tuesday, Sept. 6, at his residence.
     A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Wright was a native of Heard County, 
Ga., born July 18, 1908, son of John and Ella Hogan Wright. He was a member of 
Handley Avenue Church of God and had retired from employment with Douglas and 
Loamson in Carrollton, Ga. He was preceded in death by his son, John Tilmon Wright.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gleamer Gore Wright of Roanoke; two daughters, 
Mrs. Earlene Scott and Mrs. Ezell Barnes, both of Roanoke; a brother, Grady Wright of 
Ephesus, Ga.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great- 
grandchildren.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Kathy Jane Screws

     (WADLEY) Funeral services for Kathy Jane Screws, 22, of Route 1, Wadley, were 
Sunday, Sept. 11, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Corinth Christian Church, with Revs. Johnny 
Williams and S. T. Janney officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
     Mrs. Screws died Thursday, Sept. 8, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile 
accident in Clay County.
     A Randolph County native and lifelong resident, Mrs. Screws was born December 26, 
1971, daughter of Carlton Manley and Jeanette Siggers Clark. She was a homemaker and 
a member of Maplewood Baptist Church in Roanoke.
     She is survived by her husband, Kem Screws of Wadley; three sons, Jamie Screws, 
Nicholas Screws and Jonathan Screws of Wadley; her mother and step-father, Jeanette 
and Mack Blackmon of Roanoke; two brothers, Larry Clark and Ray Blackmon of 
Roanoke; and her step-grandmother, Gladys Staples of Roanoke.
     Pallbearers were Steven Mickle, Scott Wade, James Brown, Ricky Brown, Jackie 
Dudley and James Norred.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Delmar Lovvorn Haynes

     (FOREST PARK, Ga.) Delmar Lovvorn Haynes, 58, of Forest Park died at Southern 
Regional Medical Center, Riverdale, Ga., on Sept. 7, 1994.
     Mr. Haynes was born in Randolph County, Ala., June 23, 1936, son of the late Aaron 
Haynes and the late Minda Lipham Haynes. He was a retired fork lift driver, a member of 
Peacetree City Church of God, Peacetree City, Ga., and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
     Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Parkway Garden Chapel, Forest Park. Rev. 
Allan Mathura and Rev. Charles Howell officiated. Interment was at Sherwood Memorial, 
Jonesboro, Ga.
     Mr. Haynes is survived by his wife, Joyce Haynes of Forest Park; one daughter, Teresa 
Leigh Hibbert of Jonesboro; one son, Jonathan (Dale) Haynes of Forest Park; one sister, 
Rilma Bailey of Roanoke, Ala.; two brothers, Alfred Haynes of College Park and Gross 
Haynes of Woodland, Ala.; one grandchild; Joshua Hibbert of Jonesboro; and nieces and 
nephews.

Mozell Watkin Traylor

     (ROANOKE) Mozell Watkin Traylor, 45, of Route 4, Roanoke, died Wednesday, 
Sept. 7, 1994, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
     Survivors include her husband, Joe A. Traylor of Roanoke; three daughters, Tamika, 
Trineda and Natasha Traylor of Roanoke; five brothers, J. T. Watkin and Harvey Junior 
Watkin of Cincinnati, Ohio, W. J. Watkin and Robert Watkin of Roanoke and Elijah 
Watkin of Oceanside, Calif.; and three sisters, Ms. Nancy Watkin of Washington, D.C., 
and Mrs. Christine Goss and Mrs. Ruby Nell Daniel of Roanoke.
     Mrs. Traylor was a native of Randolph County who graduated from Randolph County 
Training School and attended Talladega College. She was a member of Mt. Carrie Baptist 
Church, Glenn, Ga., since early childhood. She was a devoted employee of Terry 
Manufacturing Company in Roanoke.
     Services for Mrs. Traylor were at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at Mt. Carrie Baptist 
Church, with Rev. Lonnie B. Houston officiating. Interment was in the cemetery at State 
Line Baptist Church.
     Arrangements were by Clark Mememorial [sic] Funeral Home.

Cleveland (C. U.) Storey

     (AUBURN) Cleveland (C. U.) Storey, 75, of Auburn died Thursday, Sept. 8, 1994, at 
East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Lakeview Baptist Church in 
Auburn, with burial in Phenix City at Lakeview Memory Gardens Cemetery. Rev. Al 
Jackson and Rev. Cliff Knight officiated.
     Mr. Storey, a native of Lee County, graduated from Auburn University in 1942 and 
received a master[']s degree from the University of Florida in 1962. He was an ordained 
Baptist deacon and member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn. He served in the U.S. 
Air Force during World War II and worked 32 1/2 years with the Auburn University and 
University of Florida extension services. he was a farm agent in Randolph County many 
years ago.
     Survivors include his wife, Lila Jean Storey of Auburn; three sons, Ron Storey and 
Gary Storey of Dothan and David Storey of Birmingham; one daughter, Susan Storey of 
Birmingham; a sister, Elaine Lake of Phenix City; five grandchildren; and several nieces 
and nephews.
     In lieu of flowers, contributions and donations may be sent to the Lakeview Baptist 
Church Building Fund.
     Jeffcoat Funeral Home of Opelika was in charge of arrangements.

Georgia Lee Brittain

     (BIRMINGHAM) Graveside services for former Roanoke resident Georgia Lee 
Brittain, 80, of Birmingham were Saturday, Sept. 10, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Cedarwood 
Cemetery in Roanoke, with Rev. Milton Booth officiating.
     Mrs. Brittain died Thursday, Sept. 8, at Fair Haven Nursing Home in Birmingham.
     A native of Clay County, Mrs. Brittain was born March 23, 1914, daughter of James 
and Mary Stevens Jackson. She was a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church 
and had worked as a teacher with the Roanoke City School System. Her husban [sic], 
businessman Joe Brittain, preceded her in death.
     Survivors include three sons, Joe Brittain of Atlanta, Jim Brittain of Charlotte, N.C., 
and Bill Brittain of Montgomery; a sister, Mrs. Mary Frances Moore of Montgomery; a 
brother, Morgan Jackson of LaGrange, Ga.; and six grandchildren.

Loyd Owen Perry

     (GRAHAM) Funeral services for Loyd Owen Perry, 84, of Graham will be held 
Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Bethlehem Campground United Methodist 
Church in Graham with Rev. Leroy Shaw officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining 
cemetery.
     Mr. Perry died Tuesday, Sept. 13, at his residence.
     A native and former resident of Clay County, Mr. Perry was born March 27, 1910, son 
of Tommy and Lizzie Kennedy Perry. He was a retired cattle rancher and a member of 
Bethlehem Campground United Methodist Church.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Jim Noel Perry of Graham; two daughters, Mrs. 
JoAnn Lovvorn of Graham and Mrs. Julia Jeanette Barrow of Atlanta; a son, James Perry 
of Carrollton, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Moncus and Mrs. Julia Tate, both of Gadsden; 
a brother, Earl Perry of Birmingham; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and three 
great-great-grandchildren.
     The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until noon on 
Wednesday, Sept. 14. The body will lie in state for two hours beginning at 1 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
     Grandsons of Mr. Perry will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Jo Traylor

     (WEDOWEE) Mary Jo Traylor, 77, of Wedowee, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 1994, in 
Roanoke.
     Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 1994, in the First United Methodist 
Church of Wedowee, with Revs. Earl Gordon and Tom Roberts officiating. Burial was in 
Wedowee City Cemetery.
     Mrs. Traylor is survived by one son, Harold K. Traylor of Flagstaff, Ariz.; two 
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Madge Bramlett of 
Wedowee, Mrs. Mildred Snow of Birmingham and Mrs. Edyth Head of Rock Mills; and 
one brother, R. H. Kerr of Wedowee.
     Mrs. Traylor was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County and was a member 
of the First United Methodist Church. She was a retired beautician and bookkeeper.
     Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Wesley Traylor, Jr.

     (FAIRBURN, Ga.) Thomas Wesley Traylor, Jr., 64, of Fairburn, Ga., formerly of 
Randolph County, died suddenly on Sunday, Sept. 18, 1994, in Wedowee.
     Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Fairburn at Herschel 
McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Edwin Nix officiating. Burial will follow in 
the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Austell, Ga.
     Mr. Traylor is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pauline Traylor of Fairburn; one sister, Mrs. 
Bonnie Whaley of Roanoke; one step-daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Young of Pensacola, Fla.; 
two nieces and three great-nephews.
     Mr. Traylor was a member of Union City Lodge 600, Union City, Ga., Valley of 
Atlanta Orient of Georgia, Scottish Rites, and YAAR&B Shrine Temple of Atlanta. He 
was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was in lumber sales.
     The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shriners.

     (ROCK MILLS) Sylvester Whitmore, 49, of Rock Mills died Saturday, Sept. 17, 1994, 
in East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after a short illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Bethel East Baptist Church, with 
the Revs. Tony Morris and Ridley Parmer officiating. Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
     Mr. Whitmore is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Rhonda Reed and Mrs. Penny Steel 
of Tallapoosa, Ga.; two sons, Randel Whitmore of Rock Mills and Lamar Whitmore of 
Tallapoosa; seven grandchildren; six sisters, Rachel Bethea of Opelika, Irene Nichols of 
Columbus, Ga., Elizabeth Hicks and Vesmer Blount of LaGrange, and Fonzie Whitmore, 
Sherman Whitmore and H. V. Whitmore of Woodland; and several nieces and nephews.
     Mr. Whitmore was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, son of the late 
Harvey V. Whitmore and Lena Mae Cox Whitmore.
     Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Jessie Calvin Taylor

     (WADLEY) Funeral services for Jessie Calvin Taylor, 65, of Route 1, Wadley, were 
Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Forrester's Chapel, with the Revs. Gordon Taylor 
and Kenneth Perry officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
     Mr. Taylor died Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Veterans Hospital in Birmingham.
     A former resident of Rock Mills, Mr. Taylor was a Randolph County native, born 
Nov. 13, 1927, son of Johnny and Mae Barfield Taylor. He was a self-employed 
pulpwooder and a member of Corinth Christian Church. He was an army veteran of the 
Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart. His father, the Rev. Johnny Taylor, 
and two brothers, Bonner Taylor and Vester Taylor, preceded him in death.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jean Kellum Taylor of Wadley; his mother, Mrs. Mae 
Barfield Taylor of Wadley; a sister, Mrs. Joyce Nixon of Wadley; and three brothers, 
R. V. Taylor of Wadley, John D. Taylor of Valley and Grant Taylor of Roanoke.
     Pallbearers were Fred Railey, Bob Stapler, Bruce Albright, Doug Bennett, Junior Lacy 
and Doug Bailey. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Taylor, Bob Taylor, Scott Nixon, 
Philip Nixon and Chad Nixon.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

     (LANETT) Mapie T. Kenady, 89, of Lanett died Sunday, Sept. 18, 1994, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital in Valley.
     A native of Clay County, Mrs. Kenady had been a resident of Lanett for the past eight 
years. She was an active member of West Side Baptist Church in Lanett.
     Mrs. Kenady is survived by two daughters, Melda Dorman of Lanett and Renetta Jones 
of Opelika; three sons, Gulma Kenady of Davidston, John A. Kenady of Valley and 
Dewell Kenady of Wetumpka; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two 
great-great-grandchildren.
     Funeral services were at Union Baptist Church in Motley, Ala., at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, 
Sept. 20, with the Rev. Bob Lee and the Rev. Allen Deeman officiating. Burial was in the 
adjoining cemetery.
     Memorial contributions may be made to West Side Baptist Church in her memory.
     Johnson Brown-Service of Valley was in charge of arrangements.

Tilmon Strickland

     (ROANOKE) Tilmon Red Strickland, 75, of Roanoke died Sept. 12, 1994, at his 
residence.
     Mr. Strickland joined the Rock Mills Baptist Church at an early age. He served his 
country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
     Survivors include one sister, Ms. Amelia Strickland of Detroit, Mich.; a devoted and 
special friend, Ms. Kate Reed of Roanoke; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Minnie Ruth Strickland of 
Chattanooga, Tenn.; other special friends, Tammy, Marie and Tamara Broome, all of 
Roanoke; two special cousins, Sarah Esters of Roanoke and Minnie Strickland of 
LaGrange, Ga.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
     Services for Mr. Strickland were Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. from State Line Baptist 
Church, with Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. 
Pallbearers were nephews.
     Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

OBITUARIES:

Beatrice Allen

     (WADLEY) Funeral services for Beatrice Allen, 92, of Wadley were Thursday, 
Sept. 22, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs. David A. Jones, 
Jack Womack and Kevin Hand officiating. Burial was at Wadley Cemetery.
     Mrs. Allen died Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Randolph County Hospital.
     A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Allen was born Oct. 15, 1901, 
daughter of J. B. and Mittie Wilkerson Clardy. She was a member of Wadley First United 
Methodist Church and had worked in the cafeteria at Wadley High School. She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Grady Allen, a son, Ralph Allen, and grandson, James 
C. Jim Allen.
     Survivors include two sons, Edward Allen of Wadley and Bill Allen of Heidelberg, 
Miss.; four grandchildren, Lynn Newsome of Asheville, N.C., Brannan Allen and Bill 
Allen of Brandon, Miss., and Gina Hand of Greensburg, La.; three sisters, Mrs. Ina 
Shockley of Birmingham, Mrs. Delia Denny of Talladega and Mrs. Rosa Liles of Wadley; 
and nine great-grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were Brannan Allen, Ronald Newsome, Charles Clardy, James Rollins, 
Elliott Gay, Ray Jones and Bill Hardy Allen.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

William Karo Daniel

     (WOODLAND) William Karo Daniel, 82, of Route 2, Woodland, died Wednesday, 
Sept. 21, 1994, in East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after an extended illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Providence Baptist Church, with 
Revs. Tommy Morris and Cecil Halsey officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
     Mr. Daniel is survived by his wife, Mrs. Onyce Daniel of Woodland; two daughters, 
June Garner of Marietta, Ga., and Patricia Vaughn of Woodland; five sisters, Lorene 
Davis and Leola Brown of Woodland, Jewel Czik and Era Hill of Roanoke and Eris 
Stevens of Bowdon, Ga.; one brother, G. W. Daniel of Hattiesburg, Miss.; and 
six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were nephews.
     Mr. Daniel was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was a farmer 
and a member of Providence Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer for the past 
15 years.
     Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

William Howard Taft Stewart

     (WOODLAND) William Howard Taft Stewart, 83, of Rt. 2, Woodland, died Friday, 
Sept. 23, 1994, at Wedowee Hospital.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at Piney Woods Church of Christ, 
with Bro. Gerald Romine officiating. Burial was in the Wortham Cemetery.
     Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Mrs. June Stewart of Woodland; one daughter, 
Mrs. Rickie Pool of Woodland; three sons, David Wayne Stewart and James Garfield 
Stewart of Woodland and Robin Lewis Stewart of Dadeville; 12 grandchildren; and two 
sisters, Mrs. Annie Mae Carver of Anniston and Mrs. Norma Belle Stargill of Camp Hill.
     Pallbearers were friends of the family.
     Mr. Stewart was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was retired 
from Lanett Textile and was a veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by 
one son, Howard Stewart.

Winnie M. Boyd

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Winnie M. Boyd, 67, of Route 1, Roanoke, were 
Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Tommy 
Burke officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
     Mrs. Boyd died Sunday, Sept. 25, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
     A former resident of Woodland, Mrs. Boyd was a native of Cleburne County, born 
August 7, 1927, daughter of Hubert and Bessie Stevens Noles. She was a homemaker and 
a member of Bethel East Baptist Church.
     Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Jean Powers of Roanoke; a son, James E. 
Boyd of Roanoke; one grandson, Danny Boyd, also of Roanoke; two half-sisters, Mrs. 
Norma Moncus of Fredonia and Mrs. Wilmer Hester of LaGrange, Ga.; and a 
half-brother, LeRoy Palmer of Woodland.
     Pallbearers were Gilbert Moore, Bert Jones, Hugh Powers, Thomas J. Boyd, David 
Mitchell and Wayne Edmondson.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Zudie Veal

     (FIVE POINTS) Funeral services for Zudie Veal, 83, of Five Points, will be held 
Wednesday, Sept. 28, 1994 at 10 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. J. T. 
Marks officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in 
Chambers County.
     Mrs. Veal died Monday, Sept. 26, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
     A resident of Five Points most of her life, Mrs. Veal was a Chambers County native, 
born July 17, 1911, daughter of Jim V. and Elizabeth Anglin Pike. She was a homemaker 
and a member of Lanier Baptist Church.
     Survivors include two brothers, Billy Pike and Guy Pike, both of Five Points, and 
several nieces and nephews.
     The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 8 a.m. until the time of 
the service on Wednesday.
     Pallbearers will be Billy Joe Pike, Fred Norred, Dalph Norred, Mark Windsor, Gordon 
Windsor and Michael Sikes.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
