OBITUARIES:

Clarence Truman Key

 (WEDOWEE) Services for Clarence Truman Key, 76, of Wedowee were Tuesday,
Sept. 2, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church, with the
Rev. Ricky Emory and the Rev. Leron Murphy officiating. Burial was in the
adjoining cemetery.
 Mr. Key died Sunday, Aug. 31, at University Hospital, Birmingham.
 Survivors include two sisters, Myrtle Pettus of Oxford and Betty Gaham of
Wedowee; two brothers, Raymond Key of Roanoke and Eardis Key of Oxford; and
several nieces and nephews.
 Pallbearers were Jim Key, Wendell White, Doyle Phillips, David Phillips,
Stanley Bean and Eldon Key.
 Mr. Key was a native of Randolph County, born July 22, 1927, son of John
Thomas Key and Ada Huddleston Key. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist
Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Adamson Key.
 Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Julia Crenshaw

 (VALLEY) Julia Crenshaw, 78, of Valley died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at her
residence.
 Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Rev. Billy Clark officiating. Burial
followed in Cusseta Cemetery.
 Mrs. Crenshaw is survived by her daughter, Ruby Weldon of Valley; her son,
Sammy Bolt of Five Points; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two
brothers and three sisters.
 Born Nov. 19, 1924, in Wedowee, Mrs. Crenshaw was a loving mother and child
of God. She was a homemaker, former textile worker, farmer and helper. She
loved fishing, quilting and canning. She was the daughter of the late Matie
Weldon Watson and Sam J. Watson.
 Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Eilene Beaird Crowder

 (FIVE POINTS) Eilene Beaird Crowder, 88, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at
LaFayette Nursing Home following an extended illness of over a year. Mrs.
Crowder had lived in Five Points the previous 61 years. Until her failing
health, she was an active and devoted member of Five Points Baptist Church and
was the oldest resident member.
 Services were Saturday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at Five Points Baptist Church,
with the Rev. Bob Karcher and the Rev. Charles Whitson officiating. Interment
was at Five Points-Belcher Cemetery.
 Mrs. Crowder is survived by a son, Dr. John T. Crowder; daughter-in-law
Martha Cooksey Crowder; three grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; seven nieces;
a dedicated, caring friend, Naomi T. Blair; and many wonderful friends who
shared their life with her.
 Mrs. Crowder was predeceased by an infant daughter; a son, Gordon Crowder
Jr.; and her husband of 62 years, Gordon Crowder Sr. She was the youngest of
seven children. At the time of her death, she was the only one of seven living,
having been preceded in death by Inez B. Brown, Lera B. Crosby, Woodrow W.
Beaird, Emmitt O. Beaird, Louise B. Horn and Mary B. Burdette.
 Mrs. Crowder was employed for 20 years at International Playtex Corporation
in LaFayette. Her last employment was with Crowder Animal Clinic in Five
Points. She enjoyed her church, family, friends; cooking, gardening, flowers,
fishing, pets and Atlanta Braves baseball.
 Memorial donations may be made to Five Points Baptist Church or Chambers
Academy, LaFayette.
 Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Curtis Columbus Battle

 (WADLEY) Curtis Columbus Battle, 85, of Wadley died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003,
at Lineville Nursing Facility.
 Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. at County Line Baptist Church,
Wadley, with the Rev. Jeffery D. Rosser officiating. Burial will be in the
Baptist church cemetery.
 Survivors include a son, Cleveland Battle of Wadley; five grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Genie Battle.
 The body will be placed in the church one hour before the services.
 Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Edward Humphrey

 (WEDOWEE) Services for Edward Humphrey, 87, of Wedowee were Sunday, Aug. 31,
2003, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Billy East
officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mr. Humphrey died Friday, Aug. 29, at Lineville Nursing Facility.
 Survivors include his wife, Morie Key Humphrey of Wedowee; two sons, James
Humphrey of Crestview, Fla., and William Humphrey of Panama City, Fla.; five
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Peter Humphrey, Patrick Humphrey, Byron Humphrey, Michael
Humphrey, Eddie Creed and Junior Holloway. Phillip Wortham served as honorary
pallbearer.
 A native of Florida, Mr. Humphrey was born Aug. 12, 1916, son of Charlie
Humphrey and Annie Sowell Humphrey. He was retired from Plantation Patterns and
was a member of Oakridge Baptist Church in Florida. He was preceded in death by
a daughter, Ann Humphrey.
 Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

 (ROANOKE) Joann Hopper, 56, of Roanoke died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at
Randolph Medical Center.
 Services were Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2 p.m. at New Harmony Baptist Church,
LaFayette, with the Rev. William Trammell, the Rev. Chester Holloway and the
Rev. Robert L. Heflin officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
 Survivors include one daughter, Bernice Hopper of Roanoke; two sons,
Frederick Tucker of Roanoke and Ralph Potter of Palmetto, Ga.; six
stepdaughters, Kathy Morgan, Beverly Ann Morgan and Diane Hughley of Roanoke,
Tracy Zachary of LaFayette, Lawanda Rado of Chicago, Ill., and Betsy Kidwell of
Newnan, Ga.; eight stepsons, Timmie Morgan and Gary Morgan of Franklin, Ga.,
Bernard Bell, Kenneth Bell, Victor Bell, J. C. Tatum and Vincent Bell of Roanoke
and Kevin Tover of Birmingham; seven sisters, Dollie Ruth Morgan, Rosie Mae
Bell, Ethel Tucker, Kathy McCray and Charlotte Clark-Frieson of Roanoke, Georgia
Mae Jennings of LaFayette and Betty Foster of Tuskegee; one brother, John Wesley
Bell of Roanoke; 15 foster children and 33 grandchildren.

Sara Virginia Norred

 (ROANOKE) Services for Sara Virginia Norred, 77, of Roanoke were Friday, Aug.
29, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lendon Fields,
the Rev. Alan Hurst and the Rev. Shannon Mapp officiating. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
 Mrs. Norred died Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
 Survivors include her husband, Leonard Norred of Roanoke; two daughters,
Ginger Norred and Barbara Norred of Roanoke; three sons, Bobby Norred, Ricky
Norred and Jimmy Burgess of Roanoke; three sisters, Letha Howard, Marie Gray and
Hazel Owens of Roanoke; five brothers, O'Neal Mapp of Wedowee, Benny Mapp, Joe
Mapp and Billy Mapp of Roanoke and Jerry Mapp of Wadley; four grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Norred was born Oct. 11, 1925, daughter of
Emory Austin and Rosa Lee Fincher Mapp. Mrs. Norred was a member of Fellowship
Baptist Church and had been employed with Candlewick Yarns. She was preceded in
death by her parents and two brothers, Earnest Mapp and Richard Mapp.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Willie Lee Brooks

 (WOODLAND) Services for Willie Lee Brooks, 97, of Woodland were Sunday, Aug.
31, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Christian Church, with Bro. Ralph Posey
officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
 Mrs. Brooks died Friday, Aug. 29, at Wedowee Hospital.
 Survivors include one daughter, Jo Wilson of Woodland; a daughter-in-law,
Ruth Brooks Wakefield of Wedowee; three grandchildren; three sisters, Jane
Hughes of Austell, Ga., Loretta Blansit of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Martha Jean
Kaylor of Bowdon, Ga.; two brothers, Harding Lovvorn and Edd Lovvorn of Bowdon;
six great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Chad Wilson, James Floyd, Quinon Blanks, Frankie Lovvorn,
Ricky Lovvorn, Jason Hughes, Ed Traylor and Chad Hardy.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Brooks was born April 27, 1906, daughter of
Thomas Matthew and Ida Jane Traylor Lovvorn. She was a homemaker and a member
of Pine Hill Christian Church and Woodland Senior Citizens Center. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Lindsey Monroe Brooks; a daughter, Linnie Fred
Landers; a son, Jack Brooks; and two sisters, Mavis Duke and Annie B. Williams.
 Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Anne Jacobs Alsobrook

 (FIVE POINTS) Anne Jacobs Alsobrook, 73, of Five Points died Monday, Aug. 25,
2003, in Ragland.
 A memorial service was at Five Points Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on
Thursday, Aug. 28, with the Rev. Charles Hazel officiating.
 Surviving are her husband, Fuller Alsobrook Jr. of Five Points; two sons,
Steve Alsobrook of Talladega and Adrian Alsobrook of Five Points; and two
brothers, John Jacobs of Tampa, Fla., and Buddy Jacobs of Huntsville.
 Mrs. Alsobrook was born in Chambers County on Oct. 24, 1929. She graduated
from Auburn University with a master's degree and had worked for more than 25
years with the Chambers County School System. She was a member of Five Points
Methodist Church.
 Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Kathryn Weathers Lane

 (DECATUR, Ga.) Kathryn Weathers Lane, 94, of Decatur, Ga., formerly of
Roanoke, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003.
 Mrs. Lane was a native of Randolph County, daughter of the late Alphonso and
Mattie Cunningham Weathers. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of
Decatur and the McLain Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Telephone
Pioneers of America and Dekalb Federation of Garden Clubs. She worked for 44
years with Southern Bell and AT&T. Following retirement, she and her husband
traveled extensively in the United States and Europe.
 She is survived by nephews Lee Kitchens of Orlando, Fla., C. P. Weathers of
Ft. Wayne, Ind., Nick Weathers and Charles Weathers of Atlanta, Christopher Hill
of San Carlos, Calif., and John Hill of Alexandria, Va.; nieces Mrs. Robert
Necasulmer of Kennett Square, Pa., and Mrs. Chris Bolen of Orlando and several
great-nieces and nephews.
 Services were in the chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug.
28, with Dr. Peter Rhea Jones and Dr. Harold D. Zwald officiating. Interment
was in Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the
Children's Fund at Decatur First Baptist Church.
 Arrangements were by A.S. Turner & Sons, Decatur.

 (TUSKEGEE) James Major Chappell, 56, of Tuskegee died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003,
at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Tuskegee.
 Services were Saturday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills Baptist Church with
the Rev. Lonnie B. Houston and Jerome Fanning officiating. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
 Survivors include his adoptive mother, Ruthie Askew of Roanoke; two brothers,
John W. Chappell of Atlanta and Walter Jones of Columbus, Ga.; special cousins
Bridgett Foster and Eva Fortee of Roanoke; and special friends Lillie Pearl
Bachman and Ida Coleman of Tuskegee.

Thomas Floyd Evans

 (ROANOKE) Services for Thomas Floyd Evans, 72, of Roanoke, formerly of
Charleston, S.C., were Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral
Chapel, with the Rev. Keith Benefield officiating. Burial was at Randolph
Memory Gardens.
 Mr. Evans died Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
 Survivors include two daughters, Laurie Wilson and Claudia Walters of
Charleston, S.C.; three sons, Alan Eugene Evans and James D. Evans of Charleston
and Tom Evans Jr. of Roanoke; three sisters, Bertie Lou Gibhart of California,
Oretha Ash of Watertown, N.Y., and Leanna Evans of Albany, Ga.; two brothers,
Raymond Evans of Holt Summit, Mo., and Othello Evans of Kansas City, Mo.; a
special friend, Selma Hill of Roanoke; ten grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
 A Georgia native, Mr. Evans was born March 13, 1931, son of Jesse Howard and
Ruby Loyless Evans. He had completed 22 years of service in the Navy, was a
member of Midway Full Gospel Church and had been employed with Milliken Mills.

Loneta Bell Smoot

 (LANETT) Loneta Bell Smoot, 87, of Lanett died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at
Beverly Health Care, Lanett.
 Mrs. Smoot was born March 25, 1916, in LaGrange, Ga., daughter of the late
Cora Bales Carpenter and Newman Franklin Carpenter. She was a homemaker and
also assisted her husband in delivering newspapers. She was of the
Congregational Christian faith.
 Surviving are three sons, Byron Smoot, Bobby Smoot and Randy Smoot of Lanett;
six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irisdeen Carmichael of
Hattiesburg, Miss., and Catherine Turnham of Roanoke; and a brother, Harvey F.
Carpenter of Lanett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Smoot, and
her brother, Newman F. "Junior" Carpenter.
 Graveside services were at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Hillcrest
Cemetery in Lanett. The Rev. Brad Reed officiated.
 Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
 Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Ricky Rushton

 (ROANOKE) Services for Ricky Rushton, 49, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, Sept.
3, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald Sheppard
officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mr. Rushton died Monday, Sept. 1, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
 A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Rushton was born Feb. 8, 1954, son
of Rufus and Ruby Watson Rushton.
 Survivors include one son, Mac Rushton of Roanoke; one grandson, Tre' Rushton
of Roanoke; one sister, Janice Welsh of LaGrange, Ga.; one brother, Ronnie
Rushton of Roanoke; and his grandmother, Laura Rushton of Roanoke.
 Pallbearers will be Brian Laws, Tommy Rushton, Scotty Rushton, Kenny Rushton,
Render Yarbrough and Larry Bailey.
 Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Howard Earl Carr Sr.

 (AUBURN) Dr. Howard Earl Carr Sr., 87, of Auburn, died Thursday, Aug. 7,
2003.
 Services were Sunday, Aug. 10, at Auburn United Methodist Church, with Dr.
George Mathison officiating. Burial was at Auburn Memorial Park.
 The family requests memorial donations be made to The Howard E. Carr
Scholarship Fund or The Howard and Carolyn Carr Endowed Professorship in
Physics, Alumni Center, 317 S. College St., Auburn, AL 36849, Attn: Tammy Beck. 
Mrs. Carolyn Audrey Taylor Carr used her entire family inheritance to found the
scholarships named for her husband. The professorship named for the Carrs was
endowed by Harry and Janet Knowles. Mr. Knowles, the founder of Metrologic
Corp., is one of Dr. Carr's former students.
 After graduating as valedictorian of his class at Headland High School, Dr.
Carr worked his way through college in three years, graduating from API (Auburn
University) with a B.S. in physics and mathematics in the summer of 1936.
 Dr. Carr, son of the late Samuel Tilden and Annie Bell Freeman Carr, is
survived by his sister, Mrs. Corene Carr Grantham of Headland; his son, Howard
E. Carr Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., his daughter, Carolyn Ann Carr of Auburn; two
grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
 He was married to the former Carolyn Taylor, sister of the late Jim Gus
Taylor of Wedowee.

Randy Alan Crenshaw

 (HOPE HULL) Randy Alan Crenshaw, 49, of Hope Hull, originally from Roanoke,
died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003.
 He is survived by his wife, Wanda Crenshaw; one son, Keith Crenshaw; two
brothers, Mike Crenshaw and Darrell Crenshaw; and two grandchildren.
 Graveside services were at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Greenwood
Cemetery, with Minister Jim Morris officiating.
 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer
Society.
 Arrangements were by White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home, Montgomery.

Wilma Prescott Philpott

 (WEDOWEE) Graveside services for Wilma Prescott Philpott, 89, of Wedowee,
formerly of Roanoke, will be Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Cedarwood
Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Dean officiating.
 The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
 Mrs. Philpott died Saturday, Sept. 6, at East Alabama Medical Center in
Opelika.
 Survivors include a son, Don Philpott of Buena Vista, Colo.; one sister, Velma
Brown of LaGrange, Ga.; one brother, Curtis Prescott of Roanoke; three
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Philpott was born March 17, 1914, daughter of
George Washington and Carrie Lovvorn Prescott. She was Baptist by faith and had
been employed with Handley Mills and Frameaway.
 Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

 (WEDOWEE) Services for Rick Smith, 47, of Wedowee, formerly of LaGrange, Ga.,
were Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the
Rev. Ridley Herren and the Rev. Bobby Burroughs officiating. Burial was at
Forrester's Chapel Cemetery.
 Mr. Smith died Saturday, Sept. 6, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
 Survivors include his wife, Janet Milton Smith of Wedowee; his father,
Willard C. Smith of LaGrange, Ga.; a daughter, Kimberly Jackson of West Point,
Ga.; two stepdaughters, Julia Thrower and Jeana Puckett of Wedowee; a stepson,
Joey Puckett of Atlanta; two sisters, Annette Rush of LaGrange and Gloria Sivell
of Adairs, Ga.; three brothers, James Fletcher of LaGrange, Clifton Smith of
Crawfordville, Fla.; and John Albert Smith of Moultrie, Ga.; and two
grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were James Fletcher, Ricky McManus, Shane Davis, Joey Puckett,
Jay Herren, Andy Boyd and Bob Rush. Honorary pallbearers were Fred Melton and
Bobby Jones.
 A Paterson, New Jersey native, Mr. Smith was born April 15, 1956. He had
been employed as a mechanical engineer with a newspaper processing service.

 (NEWELL) Services for Ola Jo Ragsdale, 68, of Newell were Sunday, Sept. 7,

 Miss Ragsdale died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Roanoke Healthcare.
 Survivors include three sisters, Vivian Lipham and Sue Barker of Newell and
Willa Nichols of Rex, Ga.
 Pallbearers were Grady Daniel, Jesse Reynolds, Todd Freeman, L. D. Cofield,
Frank Bell Reaves, Phillip Lipham and Brian Lipham.
 A Randolph County native, Miss Ragsdale was born Jan. 8, 1935, daughter of
James P. and Demay Bell Ragsdale. She was a homemaker and a member of Jordan's
Chapel Congregational Methodist Church.

 (ROANOKE) Services for Effie Lee Wood Talley, 95, of Roanoke were Saturday,

Young officiating. Burial was at Mt. Zion Christian Church cemetery.
 Mrs. Talley died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003 at Traylor Nursing Home.

Michigan Avenue, Ste. 1100, Chicago, IL 60611-1676).
 Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Watson of Leighton, Carolyn
McDaniel of Roanoke and Marie Moore of Phoenix, Ariz.; one son, John Moore of
Wetumpka; two stepdaughters, Margaret Harris of Dahlonega, Ga., and Barbara
Davidson of Gainesville, Ga.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Jim Davis, Jay Moore, Michael Davenport, Phillip Davenport,
Lee Davenport and Matt McDaniel.
 A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Talley was born Nov. 20, 1907, one
of 11 children of John and Lola Dollar Wood. She lived at 304 West Piedmont
Street in Roanoke for more than 30 years, moved to Roanoke Health Care in
January 1994, and had been at Traylor Nursing Home since 1996. She was preceded
in death by her husband, George Tally, and the father of her four children, Eck
Moore.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

 (NEWELL) Services for Louis McCain, 77, of Newell were Saturday, Sept. 6,
2003, at 11 a.m. at Cavers Grove Christian Church, with the Rev. Gordon Taylor
and the Rev. Phillip Waites officiating. Burial was in Levens Baptist Church
Cemetery.
 Mr. McCain died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Wedowee Hospital.
 Survivors include his wife, Mavis Nelson McCain of Newell; a daughter,
Rebecca Brown of Winter Haven, Fla.; a son, Mike McCain of Newell; a sister,
Loree Reaves of Mableton, Ga.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Junior McCain, Justin McCain, Brad Pollard, Carl Kelly Jr.,
Edward Dygert and Gene Southerland.
 A native of Randolph County, Mr. McCain was born Oct. 4, 1925, son of Wyatt
E. McCain and Arbie Calhoun McCain. He was retired from the Randolph County
Board of Education as a school bus driver and was a poultry farmer with Tyson
Foods. He was a member of Cavers Grove Christian Church and a World War II army
veteran. Mr. McCain was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Susan Brown
Dygert.

 (ROANOKE) Services for Verna Perry McDaniel, 70, of Roanoke were Friday,
Sept. 5, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Vernon
Willis and the Rev. Arlin Ashley officiating. Burial was at Potash Cemetery.
 Mrs. McDaniel died Wednesday, Sept. 3, at her home.
 Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda Watson of Roanoke; her mother, Limmer
Perry of Roanoke; two grandchildren; a sister, Runett McDaniel of Roanoke; a
brother, C. W. Perry of Roanoke; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews.
 A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. McDaniel was born Feb. 11, 1933,
daughter of Cecil and Limmer Woodard Perry. She had been employed with Handley
Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis McDaniel.
 Pallbearers were Gary McDaniel, Phillip McDaniel, Brandon McDaniel, Eddie
Akins, Rusty Dobson and Brian Pilgrim.

Kelvis LaShawn Williams

 (BIRMINGHAM) Kelvis LaShawn Williams, 20, of Birmingham, formerly of
LaFayette, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, in Birmingham.
 Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 30, at 2:30 p.m. at Pine Grove United
Methodist Church in LaFayette with the Rev. Cecelia Broome officiating. Burial
followed in the church cemetery.
 Mr. Williams is survived by his mother, Patricia Williams of LaFayette; his
father, John Edward Wood of LaFayette; three sisters, Jessica Williams of
LaFayette, Tiffany Staples of Birmingham and Kristen McCowan of Wadley; three
brothers, LaCourtney Williams, Jacorey Williams and Marcus Whitlow, all of
LaFayette; two grandmothers, Lury Carrie Williams of LaFayette and Mary Turner
of Five Points; his grandfather, James Wood of Wadley; his step-grandfather,
James Turner of Five Points; six aunts and two uncles; one great-uncle; one
niece; and a host of cousins and friends.
 Born June 27, 1983, in Randolph County, Mr. Williams grew up in Chambers
County and attended LaFayette High School. He had recently moved to Birmingham.

Vicie Holloway Gray

 (WEDOWEE) Services for Vicie Holloway Gray, 81, of Wedowee will be Wednesday,
Sept. 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert
Mount and the Rev. Bobby Burroughs officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining
cemetery.
 The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee until
one hour prior to services. Mrs. Gray will lie in state at the church for one
hour beginning at 1 p.m. Floral tributes will be accepted or the family
suggests that contributions be made to the local hospice.
 Mrs. Gray died Sunday, Sept. 7, at her daughter's residence in Jasper.
 Survivors include three daughters, Martha Nell Mount of Jasper, Mailey Ann
Langley of Wadley and Carolyn V. Valliere of Winder, Ga.; one son, Bobby Joe
Gray of Georgetown, Ga.; a brother, Joe Holloway of Wedowee; 15 grandchildren
and 19 great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers will be Mrs. Gray's grandsons and family members.
 A native of Randolph County, Mrs. Gray was born Sept. 4, 1922, daughter of
Joseph Menyard Holloway and Sullar Harmon Holloway. She was retired from
Higgins Slacks and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Mrs. Gray was
preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Douglas Gray, and a son, Dolan Gray.

Ethern Laney Jr.

 (WADLEY) Ethern Laney Jr., 85, of Wadley died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
 Services were at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Wadley, on Friday, Sept. 5,
at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating. Interment was in the
church cemetery.
 Mr. Laney was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He worked for many
years in Randolph County in the timber industry. Mr. Laney was preceded in
death by his wife of 41 years, Marie Staples Laney.
 Surviving are four sons, David Laney of Daviston, James Laney of Wadley,
Larry Laney of Wedowee and Steve Laney of New Site; four daughters, Catherine
Davenport of Wedowee, Rebecca Askew of Wadley, Dorothy Higgins of Roanoke and
Nancy Hardnett of Kellyton; 38 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; two
great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Lila Mills, 91, of LaGrange, Ga., died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003,
at West Georgia Medical Center.
 Mrs. Mills, born Dec. 18, 1911, in Randolph County, Ala., was the daughter of
the late William and Texie Smith French. She retired from the Kex Plant of
Milliken and Company and was a member of Unity Baptist Church.
 Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Denny of Macon; two grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Lucille Folds of
Fayetteville, Ga., and Georgia Stephens of Loganville, Ga.; and several nieces
and nephews.
 Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, in the
Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Robinson officiating. Burial was
in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

 Mr. Crenshaw died Tuesday, Aug. 19, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
 Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Oren Benefield Crenshaw of Roanoke; a
son, Wesley D. Crenshaw of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Rebecca Crenshaw Norton of
Winchester, Va.; five granddaughters, two step-granddaughters; two
step-grandsons; a sisters [sic], Mildred Kenyon of Richmond, Va.; a niece; and a
host of cousins and friends.
 Pallbearers were Rufus Hester, Ron Lyman, Bob Russell, Gene Lawson, Jake
Jolley and Ted Jackson. Honorary pallbearers were nephews and nieces, Glen
Jackson, Scott Benefield, Matt Benefield, David Benefield, Carlene Mills, Sonji
Williamson, Phil Benefield, Glenda Benefield, Sharon Jordon, Jeff Benefield,
Cindy Baker, Vicky Mullican, Tim Benefield, John Benefield, Linda Thomas and Sue
Norton.
 A former resident of Orlando, Fla., and Macon, Ga., Mr. Crenshaw was born
April 2, 1928, in LaGrange, Ga., son of Willie Guy and Eunice French Crenshaw. 
He attended Georgia Tech, served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean
War and retired from IBM in May 1987 after a 31-year career. He was a former
president of the United Methodist Men; a member of Living Sound Ministries
(Tulsa, Okla.) Board of Directors; and co-founder of Holy Spirit Harvest Church
(Macon, Ga.) where he was on the board of directors and an elder. Mr. Crenshaw
was an avid golfer and traveler. He was a member of the First United Methodist
Church in Roanoke and the Open Door Sunday School Class.

 Mrs. Bar[t]lett died Monday, Sept. 8, at Wedowee Hospital.

Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Helen Shoffeitt of Bowdon, Ga.; five grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 Mrs. Bartlett was a native of Randolph County and lived most of her life in
Wedowee. A graduate of Jacksonville State Normal School, she taught in several
elementary schools including Little Mount Carmel, Swagg, Woodland and Wedowee. 
She served as Randolph County tax assessor while her husband was serving in the
army during World War II. She was employed with the Department of Pensions and
Securities for 25 years, first as a social worker, then as director for the last
five years. Her numerous organization included charter member of Wedowee Garden
Club, member of the Women's Study Club; oldest member of the Randolph County
American Legion Auxiliary; member of First United Methodist Church of Wedowee,
United Methodist Women and Keenagers; and a former member of the Eastern Star.
 Mrs. Bartlett was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Bartlett; her
parents, John and Nancy Landers Traylor; a sister and several brothers.
 Memorials may be floral or the family suggests contributions to the Building
Fund - First United Methodist Church of Wedowee, P.O. Box 151, Wedowee, AL

Brooksie Neal Hodges

 (ROANOKE) Services for Brooksie Neal Hodges, 78, of Roanoke were Friday,
Sept. 12, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Frank
McCook and the Rev. Alan Hurst officiating. Burial followed at Cedarwood
Cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge.
 Mrs. Hodges died Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Randolph Medical Center.
 Survivors include her husband, James Gordon "Pee-Wee" Hodges of Roanoke;
three sisters, Dollie Williams of Newell, Charlene Payne of Heflin and Shirley
Williams of Rome, Ga.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Hodges was born Jan. 29, 1925, the daughter of
Clint and Perlona Duffy Neal. She was a member of North Main Congregational
Christian Church and had retired from Palm Beach.

Margaret Emily Simpson Stevenson

 (ASHVILLE, N.C.) Margaret Emily Simpson Stevenson, 89, of Ashville, N.C.,
died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at the Laurels of Greentree Ridge following a
period of declining health.
 She was born March 10, 1914, in LaFayette, the only daughter and youngest of
six children born to Cora Allen and Royal Green Simpson. Her husband, Frank
Worth Stevenson, died in 1973. She is survived by three sons, Christopher
Stevenson of Pinehurst, N.C., Michael Stevenson of Ashville, and Allen Stevenson
of Robbinsville, N.C.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
 A resident of Ashville for the past few years, Mrs. Stevenson was a member of
Central United Methodist Church. She previously lived in Greenville, S.C. for
38 years where she and her husband were founding members of Aldersgate Methodist
Church. She was the owner and operator of Mardys Gift Shop in Greenville.
 A graveside service was at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, in Woodlawn Cemetery,
Greenville, S.C. A memorial service will follow [followed] at Aldersgate

Bobby E. Waldrop

 (BREMEN, Ga.) Bobby E. Waldrop, 56, of Bremen, Ga., died Saturday, Sept. 6,
2003, in Kona, Hawaii.
 Mr. Waldrop, born Dec. 1, 1946, in LaGrange, Ga., was the son of Grace
Waldrop of LaGrange. He was a Marine veteran and was director of purchasing at
Stag Parkway in Atlanta. He was an active member of Carrollton First United
Methodist Church.
 Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Gay Waldrop of
Bremen; a son, Jeff Waldrop of LaGrange; two grandsons; a sister, Janice Lee of
Woodland, Ala.; a brother, Steve Waldrop of Birmingham.

 Mr. Adams died Thursday, Sept. 11, at his residence.
 Born Nov. 20, 1941, in Chambers County, Mr. Adams was retired from Jack Mann
Construction after 21 years of service. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist
Church in Camp Hill.
 He is survived by his wife, Margie Kendrick Adams of Milltown; two daughters,
Lesia Adams of Penton and Pam Adams of Milltown; two sons, Randall Adams of
Roanoke and Nick Adams of Wadley; two grandsons; five sisters, Era Massey of
Meridian, Miss., Effie Berry and Faye Milam of Opelika, May Lamb of Huguley and
Loette Siggers of Waverly; and one brother, Carron Adams of Camp Hill.

Jack Abernathy

 (ROANOKE) Jack Abernathy, 87, of Roanoke died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at East
Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
 Mr. Abernathy was born in Chambers County July 17, 1916. He was an army
veteran of World War II and was retired as a mechanic for McClendon Trucking in
LaFayette after 26 years of service. He was a member of the LaFayette Volunteer
Fire Department for many years and a member of Center Baptist Church of Ridge
Grove.
 Services were at Shiloh Baptist Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, with
interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Tim Whaley officiated.
 Surviving are three daughters, Mary Anne DeLee of Five Points, Jackie
Smallwood of Roanoke and Patricia Knowles of Lanett; one son, Charles Kelley of
Valley; one brother, James Ledger Abernathy of Sylacauga; 17 grandchildren, 34
great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Chris Williamson, Steven Smith, Jim Knowles, Clint Royster,
Robbie Royster, Chuck Kelley, Gary Rape and Bryan Rape.

her residence.

C.M.E. Church Cemetery.

Byrtis Holloway and Myrtis Walker of Daviston and Suvannah Meadows of Wadley;
two brothers, Brady Meadows of Daviston and Willie C. Lewis of Mobile; nine
grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her
parents, Sallie Potts and Vess Meadows, and two sons, Henry George and Cleveland
Staples.

and had been employed with Pure Oil-Union 76. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Lillian Stephens Windsor, and a son, Hershel Manley Windsor.

Richard Henry Farrell

 (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Services for Richard Henry Farrell, 76, of Carrollton, Ga.,

 Mr. Farrell died Saturday, Sept. 20, in Wedowee.
 Survivors include two sons, Greg Beck of Graham and Jay Beck of Lavonia, Ga.;
three granddaughters; an ex-wife, Charlene Farrell of Lavonia, Ga.; two
brothers, Buddy Farrell, and Gene Farrell of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; four
brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
 Mr. Farrell was born in Hyde Park, N.Y., and was a retired business manager
for North Carolina State University Athletics Department.
 He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Christmas
Farrell.

at Gretna United Methodist Church in Louisiana with Mothe Funeral Home in

 Mrs. Hicks died Saturday, Sept. 20, in Louisiana.

grandchildren; a sister, Katie Jo Norris of Auburn; and a brother, Dewey Byron
Cash of Columbus, Ga.
 Mrs. Hicks was a retired teacher in the Anniston school system. A native of
Wadley, she had lived in Anniston 30 years. After retiring she moved to Belle
Chasse and was a member of Gretna United Methodist Church. She was active in
the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators.
 She was preceded in death by her parents, Josiah Jackson Cash and Iola
McCormick Cash.

 A Pennsylvania native, Mr. Jeffers was a resident of Randolph County for the
last 45 years. He was born July 15, 1915. He served in the United States Air
Force in World War II and was a self-employed salesman. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Bertha Gay Jeffers.

 A Randolph County native, Mr. Holloway was born July 28, 1917, son of James
A. and Mattie O. Whaley Holloway. He was a World War II Army veteran and a
member of Cherith Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Danny
Holloway; three sisters, Amy Pool, Lonie B. Bowen and Mamie Holloway; and a
brother, Vester Holloway.

Ercie Carolyn Simpson

 (NEWELL) Services for Ercie Carolyn Simpson, 51, of Newell were Sunday, Sept.
21, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Christian Church, with Bro. Ralph Posey
officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
 Miss Simpson died Friday, Sept. 19, at her home.
 Survivors include her mother, Eunice Faye Simpson of Newell; a brother, Larry
Simpson of Newell; and a nephew, Jamie Simpson of Newell.
 Pallbearers were Jamie Simpson, Jack Simpson, Jason Simpson, Terry Chambers,
Greg Edwards and Ken Brown.
 Miss Simpson was born July 31, 1952, daughter of W. H. and Eunice Faye
Lawrence Simpson. She was a member of Pine Hill Church and had worked as a
librarian for the City of Carrollton.
 The family suggests memorial contributions to Pine Hill Christian Church
Cemetery Fund.

Robert Lee Hand

 (ACWORTH, Ga.) Robert Lee Hand, 79, of Acworth, Ga., died Tuesday, Sept. 17,
2003. Services were at Collins Funeral Home, Acworth, on Thursday, Sept. 18, at
3 p.m., with the Rev. Tommy Gene Young and the Rev. James Harper officiating. 
Interment was in Rolling Hills Memory Gardens with full military honors.
 Mr. Hand was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Roanoke for 26 years,
where he was a deacon and minister of music. He had a 26-year career in the
U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Mr. Hand
also was an L.P.N. and a member of Air Force Sergeants Association. He was a
member of the Masonic Lodge in Leeland, Miss.
 Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Florence Hand; one daughter, Linda Curtis;
one son, Steve Hand; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
 Arrangements were by Collins Funeral Home, Acworth, Ga.

Virginia Dare Penn

 (ROANOKE) Services for Virginia Dare Penn, 91, of Roanoke were Sunday, Sept.
21, 2003, at 3 p.n. [m] at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tommy Burke
and the Rev. Patricia Sims officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mrs. Penn died Friday, Sept. 19, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
 Survivors include three daughters, Eleanor Seurlock of Great Falls, Montana,
and Linda Norred and Mary Kerlin of Roanoke; four sisters, Ruth Holliday and
Willie Stephens of Roanoke and Ruby Dommisse and Katherine Hobby of LaGrange;
one brother, Horace Holliday of Wedowee; five grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Tripp Penn, Sandy Holliday, Scott Thompson, Ben Blackstone,
Phil Holliday and Shay Holliday.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Penn was born July 14, 1912, daughter of
William Thomas and Pearl Jane Fincher Holliday. She was a seamstress and a
member of Lane's Chapel Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Buell Penn.

Willie Turner

 (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Willie Turner of Columbus, Ga., died Thursday, Sept. 18,
2003, at Columbus Medical Center.
 Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m. at New Harmony Baptist
Church, LaFayette, with the Rev. William H. Trammell Sr. officiating. Burial
will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour
before services.
 Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Turner Favors and Aricka Nicole Favors
of Austell, Ga.; four nephews; five nieces; and his sister-in-law, Ethel Turner
of Roanoke.
 Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Nora Elizabeth Word Jones

 (VALLEY) Nora Elizabeth Word Jones, 90, of Valley died Monday, Sept. 22,
2003, at her home.
 Born in Roanoke on Feb. 22, 1913, Mrs. Jones moved to the Valley area as a
young girl. She was the daughter of the late Henry Grady Word and Edna Earnest
Word of Shawmut. Mrs. Jones was a lifelong member of Shawmut First Baptist
Church where she taught Sunday school classes, was a past president of the WMU,
and worked on various committees. She was active in Baptist activities
throughout Alabama and served an [on] numerous boards and committees. She was a
1929 honor graduate of Shawmut High School and graduated from Auburn University
with a B.S. degree in nutrition and foods in 1934.
 She served as head dietitian for Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke for many
years and was a consulting dietitian for Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley, and
hospitals in Eufaula and Cuthbert, Ga. She retired from the State of Alabama
after serving 14 years as the state nutritionist for the Alabama Department of
Pensions and Security. In this role she traveled to all 67 Alabama counties
throughout the year working with county commodity distribution and food stamps
offices. Her primary focus was nutrition education for commodity distribution
recipients, and she was instrumental in setting up kitchens and food
demonstrations in county distribution centers throughout the state. She was a
life member of the Auburn Alumni Association, the American Diabetes Association,
the American Home Economics Association and the Alabama Diabetics Association.
 Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, M. A. (Alton)
Jones; her brother, Guy M. Word Sr. of LaGrange, Ga.; and her parents. 
Survivors include her daughter, Cathy Slaughter of Valley; her sister, Cathryne
Word Cox of Macon, Ga.; two grandsons; a niece and several nephews.
 Services will be at Shawmut First Baptist Church on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 2
p.m., with Dr. Jerome King officiating. Burial will be in Marseilles Cemetery
in West Point, Ga.
 Flowers will be accepted, and memorials may be made to the Challenge To Build
Fund, Shawmut First Baptist Church, or Chattahoochee Hospice in her memory.
 Arrangements are by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Mary Jane Watts

 (LINEVILLE) Services for Mary Jane Watts, 37, of Lineville were Tuesday,
Sept. 23, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel in Lineville with the
Revs. David Moore and Claude Bennett officiating. Burial was in Corinth
Methodist Church Cemetery in Randolph County.
 Mrs. Watts died Sunday, Sept. 21, at her home.
 Survivors include her husband, Danny Watts; a son, Wade Watts of Lineville;
her father, William H. Duke of Lineville; two sisters, Elizabeth Knight of
Wadley and Gail Maleckas of Heflin; and a brother, Don Ragsdale of Heflin.
 Pallbearers were Jessie Ragsdale, John Maleckas, Jeff Moore, Klay Watts, Joe
Morris, Alex Huddleston and Stanley Bennett.
 Mrs. Watts, a Randolph County native, had lived most of her life in Clay and
Randolph counties. She graduated from Randolph County High School and worked at
Wellborn Cabinets in Ashland in the paint department.

Steven Len McDonald

 (LINEVILLE) Services for Steven Len McDonald, 35, of Lineville will be
Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Barfield Baptist Church, with the Rev.
Braden Morrison and Dr. Wayne Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in the
adjoining cemetery.
 Mr. McDonald died Sunday, Sept. 21, at UAB Medical Center in Birmingham from
injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a native and lifelong
resident of Clay County, a graduate of Lineville High School, and an employee of
Southwire in Georgia, and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
 He is survived by his parents, Billy Joe and Jane McDonald of Lineville;
three sisters, Kathy McDonald Crenshaw and Robin McDonald Graben of Lineville
and Tammy McDonald Jenkins of Beauregard; his grandmother, Kathleen Mize of
Lineville; and five nieces and nephews.
 Pallbearers will be Brian Steen, David Stephens, Sonny McCollum, Al Griffin,
Chris Elliott, Mark Corbett, Phillip McVey and Tony Griffin.
 The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville until
1:30 on Wednesday.
