OBITUARIES:

Audrey Harmon Smith

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Audrey Harmon Smith, 73, of Roanoke were at 
2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Lavelle 
Reynolds and the Rev. Don Quick officiating.  Burial was at LaFayette City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, Jan. 27, at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.
   She was born in Randolph County on Nov. 15, 1925, daughter of Jasper and Elizabeth 
Harmon.  She was employed with Palm Beach Company and was a member of Trinity Baptist 
Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Robert Smith.
   Survivors include two sisters, Docia Harmon of Roanoke and Edna Sullenburger of 
Greensburg, Pa.; one brother, Lewis Harmon of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were David Harmon, Daryl Harmon, Al Kapaona, Scott Kapaona, Charlie 
Brooks Sr. and Rodney Harmon.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

John William Smith

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Private funeral services for John William Smith, 72, of LaGrange 
were at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at Shadowlawn Cemetery, with the Rev. S. T. 
Janney officiating.
   Mr. Smith died Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Veterans Hospital in Tuskegee.
   He was born in Newell, Ala., Sept. 25, 1926, son of John Marion and Viola Smith.  
He had been employed at West Point Pepperell and was a veteran of the Korean War.
   Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Smith of LaGrange; a daughter, Peggy Reynolds of 
LaGrange; a son, Larry Smith of Temple, Ga.; four sisters, Winnie Rice of Bowdon, Ga., 
Nellie Reaves of Fitzgerald, Ga., Dollie Harris of Riverdale, Ga., and Irene Drake of 
Wegufta, Ala.; two brothers, Robert Lovvorn Smith of Ranburne and Cleveland Fred Smith 
of Waco, Ga.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Local arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Hazel W. Sewell

   (GRANTVILLE, Ga.) Hazel W. Sewell, 79, of Grantville, Ga., died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 
1999.
   Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of McKoon Funeral 
Home, Newnan, Ga., with the Rev. Darris Baker officiating.  Interment was in Forest 
Lawn Memorial Park.
   Mrs. Sewell is survived by her husband, James P. Sewell of Grantville; a daughter, 
Mrs. Alice S. Bonner of Grantville; a son, James A. Gillespie of Dunwoody, Ga.; three 
grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Jimmie Beninate of Merritt Island, Fla.  She is 
preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Sue Foster.
   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grantville United Methodist Church, 
Church Street, Grantville, Ga. 30220.

Malinda Lucille Head

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Malinda Lucille Head, 82, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
Jan. 30, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. James Harper and 
the Rev. Frank Foster officiating.  Burial was at Rock Mills Cemetery.
   Mrs. Head died Thursday, Jan. 28, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A native and lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Head was born July 17, 1916, 
daughter of Stanley Ellis and Julia Ann Sheets Janney.  She was a member of Rock Mills 
United Methodist Church and had been employed with Belk's.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Fambro and Carolyn Janice Nobbley of 
Roanoke; one son, Tymon Roger Head of Roanoke; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 
one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Randall Robertson, Scott Robertson, William G. Nobbley, Douglas E. 
Nobbley, Scott Whaley and S. T. Janney.
   The men and women of Rock Mills United Methodist Church served as honorary pallbearers.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

C. B. Cummings

   (BOWDON, Ga.) Funeral services for C. B. Cummings, 84, of Bowdon, Ga., were 
Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel, Wedowee, with the 
Rev. Wayne Brown officiating. Burial was in the Rocky Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Cummings died Friday, Jan. 29, at his residence following an extended illness.
   Mr. Cummings was a native of Randolph County, born Aug 22, 1914, son of John 
William Cummings and Roxie Mitchell Cummings.  He was a self-employed carpenter and 
a member of Wedowee Masonic Sawyer Lodge #93.  He was preceded in death by a son, 
John A. Cummings.
   Survivors include his wife, Nancy Gross Cummings of Bowdon; a daughter Geraldine 
Hammett of Auburn; a son Jeffery Cummings of Texas; two step-sons, Robert J. Taylor of 
Bowdon and Ricky D. Taylor of Albertville; two sisters, Marie Bailey of Wedowee and 
Linnie Murphree of Anniston; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Blake Gross, Bob Gross, Jack Gross, Sam Gross, Guy Sikes, Calvin 
Bailey, Buddy Temples and Randy Temples.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Estell Crenshaw Ray

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Estell Crenshaw Ray, 92, of LaGrange, Ga., died Monday, Feb. 1, 
1999, at Brian Center Nursing Care after a lengthy illness.
   Mrs. Crenshaw was born March 31, 1906, in Polk Count, Ga., daughter of the late 
Robert and Adlee Woodard.  She was retired from Unity Plant of Callaway Mills 
Company where she was a member of the 25-year club.  She was a member of Danson 
Baptist Church.
   Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Hunter-Allen-Myhand 
Chapel, LaGrange, with the Rev. Gary Henderson and the Rev. S. T. Janney officiating.  
Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
   Survivors include a step-daughter, Johnnie Mae Humphrey of Crestview, Fla.; a 
daughter-in-law; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 
two sisters, Cordie Hodges of Clacksville and Limmer Perry of Roanoke; and several 
nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a son, Garvis Crenshaw, and a 
daughter, Helen Crenshaw Drake.

M. C. Bell

   (ROANOKE) The Rev. M. C. Bell, 76, of Roanoke died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at 
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services were Saturday, Feb 6, at 1 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 
Roanoke, with the Rev R. L. Heflin officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include his former wife, Eva Mae Bell of Franklin, Ga.; two brothers, John 
Ceroy Bell and Leroy Bell of Roanoke; two sisters, Ora D. Goode of Atlanta and Ruby 
Trammell of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his 
parents Ted William and Lizzie Bell; two brothers, The Rev. Lewis Bell and William H. 
Bell; and a sister, Lorenia Johnson.
   Rev. Bell was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 
Roanoke.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Laverne Burdette Cranford

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Laverne Burdette Cranford, 77, of Roanoke were at 
2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Frank 
McCook officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Cranford died Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Randolph County Hospital following an 
extended illness.
   She was born in Chamber[s] County on Sept. 27, 1921, daughter of Lonnie M. and 
Annie Burdett.  She had been employed at Handley Mills and was a member of North 
Main Congregational Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, 
Charlie Edward Cranford.
   Survivors include two daughter[s], Peggy Weaver of Roanoke and Barbara Cowan of 
Columbus; one sister, Grace Nelson of Centerville; one brother, Jim Allen Burdette of 
Devine, Texas; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Byron Hadley, Kevin Norred, Scottie Norred, Colby Norred, Correy 
Norred and J. C. Cowan.

Ida Davenport Grier

   (ROANOKE) Ida Davenport Grier, 74, of Roanoke died Sunday, Jan 31, 1999, at her 
home.
   Funeral services were at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m. with 
the Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating.  Interment was in the Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church 
cemetery.
   Surviving are two daughters, Annie E. Grier of Battle Creek, Mich., and Ella 
Satterwhite of Shelby, N.C.; one son, Arthur L. Grier Jr. of Chipley, Fla.; four sisters, 
Grace Lane of Fayetteville, Ga., Elise Wellborn of Cincinnati, Ohio, Fenne' Higgins of San 
Antonio, Texas, and Jean Davenport of Pasadena, Calif.; and four brothers, Walter Davenport 
of Stone Mountain, Ga., John Davenport of Altadena, Calif., Franklin Davenport of Battle 
Creek, Mich., and James Davenport of Wedowee.
   Mrs. Grier was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.  She was employed for over 30 years 
at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
   In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Chattahoochee Hospice Inc., Number 6 Medical 
Park North, Valley, AL 36854.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Pearl Hallman

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Pearl Hallman, 67, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. Friday, 
Feb. 5, 1999, at El Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stanley Daniel, the Rev. Mike 
Atkins, and the Rev. O. J. Hodett officiating.  Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Hallman died Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for 
Rehabilitation in Warm Springs, Ga.
   She was born in Randolph County Dec. 9, 1911, daughter of the late Robert and Maude 
Wilkerson.  She was retired from Handley Mills and was a charter member of El Bethel 
Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, O'Neal Hallman.
   Survivors include a daughter, Anne Hester of Roanoke; a sister, Doris Williamson of 
LaGrange; a brother, Jewell Wilkerson of Valley; three grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Steven Atkins, Andrew Atkins, Gregory Daniel, Mike Hester, 
Rev. Mike Atkins and Donald Farr.
   Honorary pallbearers were Nicholas and Lauren Hester.

Bovene Minnie Kirby

   (ROANOKE) Bovene Minnie Kirby, 81, of Roanoke died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at 
East Alabama Medical Center following a short illness.
   Funeral services were Monday, Feb 8, at 11 a.m., at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the 
Revs. S. T. Janney, Gerald Sikes and Larry Conger officiating.  Burial was in Rock Stand 
Congregational Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Kirby was a native of Randolph County, born March 3, 1917, daughter of Esker 
Taylor and Eva Willingham Taylor.  She had been employed at Palm Beach Corporation 
and was a member of Rock Stand Congregational Christian Church.
   Mrs. Kirby is survived by her husband, Earmis Kirby of Roanoke; two sons, Derrell 
Kirby of Wadley and Jimmy Kirby of LaGrange; two sisters, Imogene Allen of Haynes 
City, FL, and Marie Bailey of Montgomery; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Anthony Barrett, Lindle Williams, Ronnie Kirby, Bryan Kirby, Wayne 
Kirby and Kevin Brown.

Addie Lee Parrish

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Addie Lee Parrish, 88, of Roanoke were at 11 a.m. 
Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, with the Rev. Gordon Taylor and the Rev. Lavelle Reynolds 
officiating.  Burial was in Concord Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Parrish died Thursday, Feb. 4, at Randolph County Hospital.
   She was born in Tallapoosa County Dec. 16, 1910, daughter of Tom and Dessie Smith.  
She had worked as an LPN at Randolph County Hospital and was a member of Macedonia 
Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Watson Parrish, and 
a daughter, Ramona Janell Parrish.
   Survivors include one daughter, Mary Hamilton of Roanoke; two sons, Curtis Awbrey 
Parrish of Wadley and William Joe Parrish of Rock Mills; two half-sister[s], Pearl E. 
Simms of Roanoke and Alberta Tillis of Wadley; two brothers, William Smith of Eastman, 
Ga., and Vernon Robert Smith of Atlanta; one half-brother, Herbert E. Stewart of 
Hoboken, Ga.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were nephews.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Raymond Perry Roberts

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Raymond Perry Roberts, 82, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Saturday, Feb 6, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Don Quick officiating.
Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Roberts died Thursday, Feb 4, at Adams Nursing Home in Alexander City.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born March 12, 1916, son of Walter and 
Lizzie Roberts.  He had been self-employed as a carpenter and was a Methodist.  He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Roberts.
   Survivors include three sons, Jason Roberts and Ted Roberts of Carrollton, GA, and 
Wayne Roberts of Lanett; one brother, George Roberts of Roanoke; seven grandchildren 
and eight great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were James Roberts, Chad Roberts, Andy Vaughn, Steven Wood, Sam Walls and 
Roy Dickie.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Dorris Daughtrey Birdsong

   (JASPER) Dorris Daughtrey Birdsong, 77, of Jasper died Friday Feb. 5, 1999, at 
Integrated Health Services at Briarcliff, Alabaster.
   Graveside services were at Randolph Memory Gardens, Rock Mills, at 1 p.m. on 
Sunday, Feb. 7.
   Survivors include three daughters, Jeanne Douglas of Gulf Shores, Becky Nelson of 
Jasper and Nancy Gothard of Alabaster; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.  
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest L. "Red" Birdsong.
   Arrangements were by Kilgore-Green Funeral Home, Jasper.

Raymond Calvin Still

   (LANETT) Raymond Calvin Still, 75, of Lanett died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at West 
Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
   Mr. Still was born Aug. 5, 1923, in Randolph County.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of 
World War II and served in Africa, France and Italy.  He was retired from Atlantic & 
Pacific Tea Co. after many years.  He had served as a deacon and trustee in Lanett 
Congregational Christian Church.
   He is survived by his wife, Florene McCright Still; two daughters, Carol Still Bishop of 
Tallahassee, Fla., and Deborah Still Tuck of Pell City; six grandchildren; three sisters, 
Mary Pike of Roanoke, Annie Bassett of Blountsville and Elsie Beard of LaGrange; and 
several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Byron and 
Lily Williams Still.
   Funeral services were at Lanett Congregational Christian Church at 2 p.m. on Monday, 
Feb. 8, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett.  The Rev. Roy Bain and the Rev. Bill 
Smith officiated.
   Memorial donations may be made to his church or to one's favorite charity in his 
memory.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Lanett.

Harold Carey 'Sarge' Weaver

   (WEDOWEE) Harold Carey "Sarge" Weaver, 68, of Wedowee died Thursday, Feb. 4, 
1999, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Birmingham.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, 
Wadley, with the Rev. Calvin Trammell and the Rev. Lonnie B. Houston officiating.  
Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Freddie Mae Weaver of Wedowee; a son, Harold C. Weaver 
Jr. of Carrollton, Ga.; a daughter, Jennifer Green of Wedowee; two brothers, Milton 
Weaver and Vernon Weaver of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Geneva Johnson of Cleveland; 
and five grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mattie Weaver; three brothers, L. B., 
William Sr. and Curtis Weaver; and five sisters, Melba Weaver, Hattie Sue Oliver, Mattie 
Lou Watkins, Rose Robinson and Mae Rosie Newell.
   Mr. Weaver was retired from the military.  He was well-known as a church pianist and 
was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church.
   The family requests that any food items be taken to the church on the morning of the 
services.  The body will be placed in the church one hour before the services.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Charles Edward 'Eddie' Carter

   (FIVE POINTS) Funeral services for Charles Edward "Eddie" Carter, 44, of Five Points 
were at 1 p.m. CST on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at Standing Rock Assembly of God Church, 
with the Rev. Sonny Kent and the Rev. Bill King officiating.  Burial was in Shadowlawn 
Cemetery in LaGrange, Ga.
   Mr. Carter died Saturday, Feb. 6, at his residence.
   He was born in Tallapoosa County on Aug. 20, 1954, son of Edgar and Naydeen Smith.  
He was a welder with Kimberly Clark Company and a member of Standing Rock Assembly of God 
Church.
   Survivors include his morther[sic], Naydeen Smith of Five Points; four sister[s], Diane 
Lane of LaGrange, Faye Moore of Five Points, Judy Freeman of Lanett, and Kathy Johnson of 
Birmingham; four brothers, Ronnie Smith and Dickie Smith of Five Points, Donnie Smith of 
Lanett and Ferlon Carter of Franklin, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Eric Hayslip, Chad Smith, Jason Smith, Joey Lane, Michael Moore and 
Travis Lane.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Betty Cofield Thomas

   (ELYRIA, Ohio) Services for Betty Cofield Thomas, 63, of Elyria, Ohio, were at 1 p.m. 
Jan. 29, 1999, at the Call Out Church of the Almighty God, Elyria.  Bishop Willie Cooper, 
pastor, and the Rev. Joseph Newberry officiated.  Burial was in Brookdale Cemetery in 
Elyria.
   Mrs. Thomas died Jan. 23, 1999, at Community Health Partners in Lorain, Ohio, after a 
short illness.
   Born in Chambers County, Ala., she lived in the Elyria and Lorain, Ohio, areas for 43 
years.  She attended Phillips High School in Five Points and graduated from Fulton High 
School in Atlanta.  She was a self-employed certified health care provider and a member 
of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Alabama and the Call Out Church of the Almighty in Elyria.
   Survivors include five sons, Kenny Thomas of Lorain, Anthony Thomas of Athens, 
Ohio, Leroy Thomas of Toledo, Ohio, David Thomas of Grafton, Ohio, and Leon Cofield; 
a daughter, Betty McGee of Larain; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers 
Ernest Cofield of Elyria and Willie Cofield of Lorain; and sisters Annie Hinton of Elyria 
and Allean Culberson of Roanoke.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie Thomas; her parents, Ernest and 
Louise Cofield; and sisters, Mary Trammell and Jeanette Inman.

Max McGill

   (TALLAPOOSA, Ga.) Karon Max McGill, 52, of Tallapoosa, Ga., died Friday, Jan. 14, 1999.
   Mr. McGill was born Jan. 1, 1947, in Randolph County, son of the late Ruben A. and 
Mozelle Noel McGill of Wadley.
   Survivors include two daughters, Candida McGill and Corinna McGill of Tallapoosa; a 
son, Lyndon McGill of Tallapoosa; one grandchild; three brothers, James Frank McGill 
and Larry McGill of Wadley and Noel McGill of Devol, Okla.; and a sister, Agnes M. Nunn 
of Wadley.
   Funeral services were Jan. 18 at First United Methodist Church of Tallapoosa, with Dr. 
Roland P. Brown, Rev. Michael Casey and Rev. Sidney Tate officiating.  Music was by 
Harold McWhorter.
   Pallbearers were Kenny Barrett, Johnny Dobbs, Alan Hughes, Kurt Johnson, Dwayne 
Pope, Tracy Pope and Stacy Williams.
   Honorary pallbearers were Randall Alsabrooks, Elliot Cotney, Roger Garner, David 
McGill, Phillip McGill, Sonny McGill, Tony Motley, Jack Sims and Bobby Wiley.
   A former resident of Wadley, he served in the U.S. Army.  He was a member of First 
United Methodist Church in Tallapoosa.
   Mr. McGill taught high school at Buchannan, Ga., Haralson County High School, where 
he became assistant principal.  He served as Haralson County vocational supervisor and 
last fall became principal of Haralson County Alternative School in Bremen, Ga.
   Several times he was named teacher of the year of H.C.H.S. and later was named 
teacher of the year for all of Haralson County.  He was an active leader of Future Farmers 
of America.
   Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Tallapoosa or to 
Carroll Regional Hospice Care Inc., 906 South Park St., Carrollton, Ga. 30117.

Tony Fitzgerald Rowland
   
   (ROANOKE) Tony Fitzgerald Rowland, 30, of Roanoke died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at 
Limestone Correctional Facility.
   Mr. Rowland was the son of Mrs. Lela Mae Rowland of Roanoke and the late Earnest G. 
Rowland.
   Survivors include his mother; two brothers, Malcolm Rowland of Dickert and Roddy 
Rowland of Roanoke; three nephews, one niece; and a host of other relatives and friends.
   Services for Mr. Rowland were Thursday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. at East Roanoke Church of 
God, with Bishop Wade Wright Jr. officiating.  Interment was at Sky View Memorial Gardens, 
Roanoke.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

OBITUARIES:

William Hoyt Lacy, Sr.

   (WADLEY) Graveside funeral services for William Hoyt Lacy, Sr., 84, of Wadley were 
at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery in Wadley, with 
the Rev. Gordon Taylor officiating.
   Mr. Lacy died Saturday, Feb. 13, at Randolph County Hospital following an extended 
illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born July 1, 1914, son of James Thomas 
and Beatrice Lacy.  He was a farmer and a member of Abanda Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Dorthy Lacy of Wadley; four sons, Glenn Lacy, William H. 
Lacy Jr. and Larry Lacy of Wadley and James Lacy of Pendleton, Oregon; a half-sister, 
Ann Adamson of Sheffield; a half-brother, Alvin Caldwell of Birmingham; eight 
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Bill Lacy, Jonathan Lacy, Edward Gipson, John Welch, Craig Brown 
and Tim Bennett.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Concord Baptist 
Church, 52376 Highway 22, Wadley, AL 36276.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Elmer J. Adamson, Sr.

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Elmer J. Adamson Sr., 81, of 2987 Roanoke Rd. LaGrange, Ga., 
died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after a brief 
illness.
   Mr. Adamson was born April 3, 1917, in Glenn, Ga., son of the late Alonzo Judson and 
Charlotte Ellis Rushton Adamson.  He was owner and operator of Hillside Barber Shop.  He 
was a member and former deacon of Unity Baptist Church and a choir leader for many years 
at several Baptist churches.  He was an ordained Baptist minister, a member of Elm City 
Lodge #544 F.&A.M., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he obtained the rank of 
first sergeant.  He had lived in LaGrange since 1936.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Unity Baptist Church, LaGrange, 
with the Rev. Bobby Robinson and the Rev. O. C. Reason officiating.  Burial was in 
Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange.
   Survivors include his wife, Willene Adamson of LaGrange; two sons, Judson Adamson 
of Marietta, Ga., and Joe Adamson of LaGrange; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 
and several nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements were by Hunter-Allen-Myhand, LaGrange.

Myrtle Lee Pinckard, 101

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Myrtle Lee Pinckard, 101, of Roanoke will be at 
2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. James 
Harper and the Rev. Ladd Williams officiating.  Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist 
Church Cemetery.
   Miss Pinckard died Monday, Feb. 15, at National Health Care in Anniston following an 
extended illness.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 17, 1897, daughter of 
Robert Lee and Lizzie Estell Pinckard.  She was a teacher at Knight-Enloe School for 
51 years and a member of Lowell Methodist Church.
   Survivors include one sister, Marie Yates of Cartersville, Ga., three nephews and five 
nieces.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 5 until 8 p.m. 
Wednesday, Feb. 17.
   Pallbearers will be Brain [sic] Sellers, Lew Neighbors, Carl Sellers, Jerry D'Angelo, 
Paul Kilcullen and R. B. Stringer.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Doris Jean O'Donnell

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Doris Jean O'Donnell, 55, of Wedowee were at 11 
a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald Tweedale 
officiating.  Burial was at 3:30 p.m. EST at Camp Memorial Park cemetery in Fayetteville, 
Ga.
   Mrs. O'Donnell died Wednesday, Feb. 10, at her residence following an extended illness.
   She was born May 22, 1943, in Atlanta, daughter of Calvin P. and Christine Whitlock.  
She had been employed with Duncan Muffler and was a Baptist.
   Survivors include her husband, T. R. O'Donnell of Newnan, Ga.; four daughters, 
Barbara Mitchell of Wedowee, Sherry Ward of Carrollton, Ga., Charlene Rousey of 
Ellenwood, Ga., and Renee Vaughn of Stockbridge, Ga.; two sons, Charles Rousey Jr., of 
Ellenwood and Ricky Ray Rousey of Forest Park, Ga.; five brothers, Donald Whitlock of 
McDonough, Ga., Calvin P. Whitlock Jr. and Charles Whitlock of Stockbridge, Billy 
Whitlock of Dallas, Ga., and William Whitlock of Texas; 20 grandchildren and three 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Bessie Shelnutt

   (ATLANTA) Bessie Shelnutt, 80, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in Buckhead Nursing 
Facility in Atlanta, Ga.
   Her body was given to Emory University School of Medicine.
   She was the daughter of Mamie Cook Shelnutt and Edgar Lee Shelnutt.
   Survivors include one brother, Owen N. Shelnutt of Roanoke; two nieces, Patricia Cook 
of Tennessee and Brenda Frank of Dallas, Texas; and three nephews, Edgar Shelnutt of 
Robertsdale, Sam Shelnutt of Roanoke and Joe Shelnutt of Auburn.
   A marker will be placed in her memory in Cedarwood Cemetery.

OBITUARIES:

Hardy Lee Goss

   (ROANOKE) Hardy Lee Goss, 70, of Roanoke died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at 
Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. EST at Mount Carrie Baptist 
Church, Franklin, Ga., with the Rev. Harold Winters and the Rev. Lonnie B. Houston 
officiating.
   Burial was in State Line Baptist Church Cemetery, Franklin.
   Survivors include his wife, Christine Goss of Roanoke; three sons, Willie Frank Goss 
of Dadeville and Johnny Mack Goss and Rogers Goss of Roanoke; two daughters, Phyllistine 
Hunter and Lisa Goss of Roanoke; a sister, Willie Mae Bradshaw of Standing Rock; 
12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 
Chester and Gertrude Goss; two sons, Arthur Lee Goss and Horace Goss; and a daughter, 
Annie Ruth Goss.
   Mr. Goss will be well remembered as an enthusiastic gospel quartet singer, having 
devoted several years traveling with popular local gospel groups including The Five 
Trumpets, Golden Faith and Spiritual Sons.
   The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral services.

Dallas Leroy Meacham

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for Dallas Leroy Meacham, 66, of Newell were Sunday, 
Feb. 21, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, with the Revs. Greg Britain and Ray 
Runyan officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Meacham died Friday, Feb. 19, at his residence.
   A Randolph County native, he was born Oct. 26, 1932, son of Dewey and Mollie Smith 
Meacham.  He worked in the maintenance department at West Point Stevens.  He was a 
member of Union Baptist Church.  He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, where he 
served in the army.
   Survivors include two daughters, Patrica and Mary Fredriksen of Woodland; two sons 
Rufus Meacham of Pensacola, Fla., and Robert Meacham of Williamson, Ga.; two sisters, 
Mellie V. Meacham of Newell and Ollie Meacham of Traylor Nursing Home; six grandchildren; 
two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Billy Edwards, Don Lovvorn, Paul Steele, Roger Abrams, James Freeman 
and Randall Ussery.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Willie E. Pollard Jr.

   (OPELIKA) Graveside funeral services for Willie E. Pollard Jr., 72, of Opelika were at 
2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Rocky Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Woodland with the 
Rev. George Palmer officiating.
   Mr. Pollard died Wednesday, Feb. 17, at his residence following an extended illness.
   He was born in Randolph County Oct. 14, 1926, son of Willie Elisha Pollard, Sr. and 
Pearl Camp Pollard.  He had been employed as fire chief of the Auburn Fire Department 
and worked with the athletic department at Auburn University.  He was a veteran of 
World War II, a member of the VFW and Rocky Branch Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Nell Pollard of Opelika; three sons, Danny C. Pollard of 
Millbrook, Bill Pollard of Opelika and Michael A. Pollard of LaFayette; and two 
grandchildren.
   Memorials may be floral or contributions may be made to East Alabama Hospice, 2000 
Pepperell Pkwy., Opelika, AL 36801.

Flossie Mae Nix

   (MARIETTA, Ga.) Funeral services for Flossie Mae Nix, 88, of Marietta, Ga., formerly 
of Randolph County, were at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Benefield Funeral 
Chapel with the Rev. Gordon Taylor officiating.  Burial followed at Lineville City 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Nix died Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Wellstar Cobb General Hospital in Atlanta following 
an extended illness.
   She was born in Randolph County on April 22, 1910, daughter of Dock and Lettie Rice.  
Mrs. Nix had been employed with Atlanta Gas and Light Company, was a Past Worthy Matron OES, 
Samuel R. Lawrence Chapter, Marietta, and was a Methodist.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Edward S. Nix.
   Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Lula McDonald of Lineville; one brother, Luther Rice 
of Wedowee; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Harold Rice, Jerry Rice, J. B. Stanley, Terry Flournoy, James McDonald 
and Chuck Rice.
   Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, was in charge of arrangements.

Lorena P. Benefield

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Lorena P. Benefield, 85, of Roanoke were Friday, 
Feb. 19, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Greens Chapel United Methodist Church in Wedowee, with the 
Rev. Cloyse Johnson and the Rev. Stanley Yarbrough officiating.  Burial was in Randolph 
Memory Gardens, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Benefield, who died Wednesday, Feb. 17, was born in South Easton, Mass., on 
Feb. 19, 1913.  She had lived in Roanoke since 1970.  She was a member of Greens Chapel 
United Methodist Church and Hobson Homemakers Club.
   Survivors include her husband, D. V. Benefield of Roanoke; one daughter, Linda J. 
Thomas of Newnan, Ga.; one son, John Benefield of Opelika; one sister, Barbara Kibby of 
North Weymouth, Mass.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Frederick's Funeral Home, Opelika.

Wyatt W. Daniel, Jr.

   (WHITE PLAINS) Wyatt W. Daniel, Jr., 57, of White Plains died Thursday, Feb. 18, 
1999, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services were at Chapel Hill Methodist Church, LaFayette, at 1 p.m. on 
Saturday, Feb. 20, with interment in the church cemetery.  The Rev. Charles Whitson 
officiated.
   Mr. Daniel is survived by his wife, Kay Daniel of White Plains; a son, David Daniel 
of South Haven, Miss.; a step-daughter, Chris Callahan of Valley; two step-sons, Lynn 
Callahan and Joey Callahan of LaFayette; a sister, Janice Wade of Panama City, Fla.; a 
brother, Bob Daniel of LaFayette; his mother Elease Daniel of LaFayette; his grandmother, 
Trumer Carter of LaFayette; and one grandchild.
   Mr. Daniel was an Alabama native, born March 7, 1941.  He served in the U.S. Navy 
and was employed as an assistant manager of Southern Clean Fuels.  He was a member of 
Chapel Hill Methodist Church, LaFayette.  Donations may be made to the Chapel Hill 
Cemetery Fund.

Vivian P. Rowe

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Funeral services for Vivian P. Rowe, 85, of LaGrange, GA were at 
2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Murphy Avenue Church of Christ with Evangelist 
Alton Bailey and Minister Larry Thompson officiating.  Burial was at Shadowlawn 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Rowe died Sunday, Feb. 14, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   The daughter of the late Steve Monroe and Ruthie Kirby Prince, Mrs. Rowe was born 
Feb. 15, 1913, in Randolph County.  She was a retired spinner for Hillside Plant of 
Milliken and Company, a member of the Murphy Avenue Church of Christ and the 
LaGrange Singing Society.
   She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Bowen and Mary Edna Crawford of LaGrange; 
one sister, Annie Pearl Mann of Wedowee; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren 
and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Faye 
Rowe, and her husband William Carl Rowe.
   Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home of LaGrange was in charge of arrangements.
