OBITUARIES:

Edith Jones

   (ROANOKE) One of Randolph County's most distinguished daughters, Edith Jones, died June 24, 
1993, following surgery.
   Services for her were in Bethesda, Md., and a memorial service was held at the National 
Institute of Health in Washington, D.C., where she was head of the Nutrition and Dietetic 
Department for thirty years.
   Miss Jones was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leon Jones of Roanoke. Mr. Jones was mayor 
of Roanoke about 70 years ago, and Mrs. Jones later was city clerk of Roanoke for many years.
   Edith retired in October 1992. Professionally, she served in supervision in research. One of 
her great accomplishments was the change she made from decentralized to centralized food service.
   A graduate of the University of Alabama, who earned her master's degree from the University of 
Tennessee, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Alabama in 1956. She 
served as internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital, was a former president of the American Dietetic 
Association, and gained recognition as a leader in the field of dietetics on local, national and 
international levels.
   Among her survivors are two first cousins, B. C. Jones Jr. of Roanoke and Mrs. Ida Rainer of 
Roanoke and Birmingham, and other Roanoke cousins, Ms. Anne Montgomery and Burrel C. Jones.
   Interment was in Miss Jones's family lot in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.

Sara Jim Huckeba Croley

   (PHENIX CITY) Sara Jim Huckeba Croley, 77, of Phenix City, formerly of Randolph County, died 
Saturday, July 31, 1993, in Phenix Medical Park Hospital after a short illness.
   Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, in Wedowee City Cemetery, Wedowee, with 
Bill Weathers officiating.
   Mrs. Croley is survived by one son, James M. Croley, of Phenix City; two sisters, Mrs. Eleanor 
Moore of Turlock, Calif., and Mrs. Winnie Grinaker of St. Petersburg, Fla.[;] and a host of nieces 
and nephews.   Mrs. Croley was a native of Randolph County and had lived in Roanoke for a number 
of years. She had lived in Phenix City for the past 25 years.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Mayme Anne Wortham

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Mayme Anne Wortham, 74, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Aug. 3, 
1993, at 2 p.m. from Roanoke First United Methodist Church with Rev. Milton Booth and Dr. John Tate 
officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Wortham died Sunday, Aug. 1, at her residence.
   A longtime resident of Roanoke, Mrs. Wortham was born May 12, 1919, in LaFayette, daughter of 
Jessie House and Minnie Pledger House. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in 
Roanoke and had worked at City Bank.
   Survivors include her husband, Thomas G. (Bill) Wortham of Roanoke; a daughter, Mrs. Bonnie W. 
Wall of Summerville, S.C.; a brother, Wiley House of Lanett; a granddaughter, Mrs. Anne Hearn of 
Birmingham; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were John House, Reid House, Lee Bonner, Allen Smith, Eddie Guein, Floyd French and 
Fred Nixon.
   The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

John Lewis Dowdle

   (ANNISTON) John Lewis (Red) Dowdle, 58, of Anniston, died July 21, 1993, at Northeast Alabama 
Regional Medical Center in Anniston.
   Mr. Dowdle was born Feb. 2, 1935, in Randolph County, son of the late Manuel Dowdle Sr., and Gussie 
Walker Dowdle. He was a member of Rocky Mount United Methodist Church in his home county, but 
after moving to Anniston joined Gaines AME Methodist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Cathel Dowdle; two daughters, Ms. Valerie Dowdle and Ms. Kristina 
Dowdle of Anniston; three brothers, Herbert Dowdle Sr. of Columbus, Ga., and Manuel Dowdle Jr. and 
Clinton Dowdle of Roanoke; two sisters ,Mrs. Melinda D. Jones of LaFayette and Mrs. Doris E. Wesley 
of Harvey, Ill.; and one grandson, Derek D. Dowdle of Anniston.
   Services for Mr. Dowdle were at one o'clock Monday afternoon, July 26, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 
with Rev. Benjamin L. Little officiating. Interment was at Eden Hill.
   Arrangements were by Ervin Funeral Chapel, Anniston.

Annie Lois Allen

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Annie Lois Allen, 83, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1993, 
at 11 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Bro. Bill Prince Jr. and Rev. Milton Booth officiating. 
Burial was at Taylor's Crossroads Church of Christ Cemetery.
   Mrs. Allen died Sunday, Aug. 1, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A former resident of Taylor's Crossroads community, Mrs. Allen was born Feb. 14, 1910, in Randolph 
County, daughter of Braxton A. and Annie Mears Taylor. She was a homemaker and a member of 
Taylor's Crossroads Church of Christ. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Douglas 
Allen; a daughter, Lucille Davenport; and a brother, Karry Taylor.
   Survivors include seven daughters, Mrs. Braxie Jacobs, Mrs. Peggy Hudson and Mrs. Patsy Irvin of 
Roanoke, Mrs. Margie Halsey of LaFayette, Mrs. Laura Yarbrough of Rome, Ga., Mrs. Edith Harrington 
of Birmingham, and Ms. Jennifer Allen of Columbus, Ga.; two sons, Max Allen of Scottsdale, Ariz., and 
Douglas Allen of Birmingham; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers were Glenn Davenport, Phil Jacobs, Allen Jacobs, Tim Jacobs, Aron Halsey, Chris Halsey, 
Mike Yarbrough, Todd Harrington, Scott Harrington and Russell Irvin.
   The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to Taylor's Crossroads Cemetery Fund 
or the Randolph County Hospital Life-Line.

Gene McLain

   (LAFAYETTE) Gene McLain, 58, of LaFayette died Sunday, July 25, 1993, at University Hospital 
in Birmingham.
   Funeral services for Mr. McLain were at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Clay County on Tuesday, July 27, 
at 4 p.m., with burial in the church cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. George Palmer and Rev. 
Zenus Windsor.
   A native of Clay County, Mr. McLain owned and operated Triangle One Stop in LaFayette for 17 years 
before retiring. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church of LaFayette.
   Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Trammell of LaFayette and Renee Smith of Opelika; one son, 
Ronnie McLain of Lanett; two sisters, Wilma Nicastro of Batesville, Miss., and Pearl Jaco of 
Lawrenceville, Tenn.; two brothers, Sherman McLain of Ashland and James McLain of Wadley; and 
seven grandchildren.
   Sanders Funeral Home of LaFayette was in charge of arrangements.

James H. Webb

   (ORLANDO, Fla.) James H. Webb, 65, of Orlando, Fla., died suddenly Thursday, July 29, 1993, 
at Orlando Regional Medical Center  Sand Lake Division, Orlando.
   Originally from Randolph County, Mr. Webb was a civil engineer, employed by Bechtel Civil 
Engineering Inc. in Saudi Arabia. He served six years in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of captain.
   Survivors include his wife, Sandra L. Webb of Orlando; two sons, Jimmy Webb of Olney, Md., and 
Billy Webb of Temple Terrace, Fla.; two daughters, Katherine Anne Masci of Frederick, Md., and 
Adrian C. Webb of Burtonsville, Md.; one sister, Mrs. Sara Satterwhite of Wedowee, Ala.; and four 
grandchildren.
   Services for Mr. Webb were Monday, Aug. 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Collins Funeral Home, Silver Spring, 
Md., with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring.
   Arrangements were by Pine Castle Memorial Chapel of Orlando.

Ricky Burdett

   (LAFAYETTE) Ricky Burdett, 36, of LaFayette, died Monday, July 26, 1993, at George H. Lanier 
Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   Funeral services for Mr. Burdett were at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Clacksville, on Wednesday, 
July 28, at 3 p.m., with burial in the Church Cemetery. Rev. Maynard McGinty officiated.
   Mr. Burdett was a native of LaFayette and a member of Haymarket Baptist Church in Virginia.
   He is survived by his parents, Oscar and Joan Burdett of LaFayette, two brothers, Charles Randall 
Burdett of Fredericksburg, Va., and Kevin Lynn Burdette of San Francisco, Calif.; his grandmother, 
Verna Lee Burdett of Clacksville; and his step-grandmother, Faye Lamberth of Ashland.
   Sanders Funeral Home of LaFayette was in charge of arrangements.

Devin Isaac Richardson

   (ASHLAND) Funeral services for Devin Isaac Richardson, 27, of Ashland, will be held Wednesday, 
Aug. 4, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Rev. Joe French officiating. Burial will 
follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mr. Richardson died Friday, July 30, in LaFayette as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile 
accident.
   A former resident of Norman, Okla., he had recently moved to Ashland and was a supervisor at 
Robinson Manufacturing Co. in Lineville. He was born Oct. 2, 1965, in Atlanta, Ga., son of Jack L. 
and Linda Knight Richardson. He lived in the Buckhead area for several years and attended R. L. Hope 
School. He also attended the University of Oklahoma. The wit and spirit of this brief life will be 
greatly missed by all who knew him.
   Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Linda Knight Mayberry of Ashland; his father, Jack L. Richardson 
of Norman; his stepfather, Mike Mayberry of Ashland; and a sister, Mrs. Robyn Richardson Thornburg of 
Atlanta.
   Pallbearers will be Kirby Smith, Jimmy Knight, Walter Wellborn, Calvin Nichols, Ben Hand and 
Franklin Knight.

Reba Clayton Burke

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Mrs. Reba Clayton Burke, 63, of Roanoke were Saturday, Aug. 7, 
1993, at 2 p.m. from Lane's Chapel Methodist Church, with Revs. Willie Brasher and Mike Pope 
officiating. Burial was at Green's Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
   Mrs. Burke died Thursday, Aug. 5, at her residence.
   A long-time resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Burke was born Feb. 2, 1930, in Cleburne County, 
daughter of Herbert and Lily Price Clayton. She worked as a nurse's aide at Traylor Nursing Home and 
was a member of Lane's Chapel Methodist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Theo Burke of Roanoke; one daughter, Mrs. Linda Kirby of Rock Mills; 
a son, Tommy Burke of Roanoke; two sisters, Mrs. Odell Posey of Bremen, Ga., and Mrs. Sara Murphy 
of Jonesboro, Ga.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be [sic  were] Tommy Burke, Chris Smith, John Pentleton, Mark McManus, Scott 
McKay and Gerald Sheppard.

   (LANETT) Clarence Magby Sr., 69, of Lanett died Tuesday, Aug. 3, [1993,] at George H. Lanier 
Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Roanoke, with Rev. 
Terry Magby officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Magby is survived by six sons, Clarence Emmitt Magby Jr. and Clifford L. Magby of Homerville, 
Ga., Jimmy L. Magby of Waycross, Ga., Frankie L. Magby of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Jessie and 
Earnest Magby of Atlanta; seven daughters, Patricia A. Magby Bledsoe, Lizzie Lee Wallace and Lois 
Magby, all of Lanett, Debra Magby of Homerville, Ga., Carolyn Magby of Lakeland, Ga., Tara Magby of 
Lake City, Fla., and Trudy Hines of Newnan, Ga.; six sisters, Mary Appleby and Catherine Magby of 
Atlanta, Lizzie Datcher of LaGrange, Ga., Annie Wilkinson and Ora Slay of Roanoke and Louise Cofield 
of Dayton, Ohio; four brothers, Charlie Magby and Emory Magby of Valley, Robert Magby of Roanoke

Letha Myrtle Foster

   (WEDOWEE) Letha Myrtle Foster, 83, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1993, 
in Clay County Hospital, Ashland, after an extended illness.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church, with 
Rev. Dorsey White officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Foster is survived by one nephew who lived with her, Charles Chris Foster, and a host of other 
nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Eugene Brock, Thad Foster, Adam Carroll, Heath Petty, Shannon Foster and 
Eutimio DeJesus.
   Mrs. Foster was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. She was a retired school teacher 
with the Randolph County School System and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and 
Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Annie Ruth Smith

   (LANETT) Annie Ruth Smith, 61, of Lanett died at her home on Friday, Aug. 6, 1993.
   Mrs. Smith was born in Randolph County on Sept. 30, 1931. She was a homemaker and attended 
Faith Evangelistic Church.
   Mrs. Smith is survived by one daughter, Margaret Jeanette Henson of Beulah; one son, Joe Thomas 
White of Opelika; four sisters, Aileen Cotney of Smiths, Mae McCard of Lanett, Pearlie Jones of West 
Point and Ethel Aikens of Valley; a half-brother, Lloyd Kelley of Fredonia; four grandchildren and five 
great-grandchildren.
   Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Shawmut Cemetery with Rev. Eugene Striblin 
officiating.
   The family asks that memorials be made to Chattahoochee Hospice or to Faith Evangelistic Church in 
her memory.
   Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home of Valley was in charge of arrangements.

Janice Dunson

   (CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.) Services for Janice Dunson, 33, a resident of Chattanooga, formerly of 
Roanoke, Ala., will be at Rock Mills Missionary Baptist Church, Roanoke, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 
1993, with the Rev. R. L. Dunson officiating. Interment will be [in] the adjoining cemetery.
   Ms. Dunson was the daughter of the late Mr. Plumer and Mrs. Sarah Dunson of Roanoke.
   The body will lie in state at the church one hour before the service. The processional will leave 
for Mr. and Mrs. Rufus McGuire's residence on South Street at approximately 1:30 p.m. A reception 
in the fellowship hall of the church will follow the funeral and interment.
   Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements in Chattanooga.

John Birdsong Potter

   (WEDOWEE) John Birdsong (John Dude) Potter, 69, of Wedowee died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1993, 
at Regional Medical Center, Montgomery.
   The funeral will be at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. with 
Rev. Thomas Knight officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Potter is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Potter of Wedowee; two sons, Willie F. Potter and 
James W. Potter of Wedowee; two brothers, Josh Treadwell Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, and Fred Potter of 
Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Nora Collins of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Elizabeth Strong of Akron, Ohio; 
and six grandchildren.
   He was born in Randolph County on Aug. 11, 1922, and was a member of Bethlehem Primitive Baptist 
Church.
   Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette, is in charge of arrangements.

Cleamon Bolt

   (WEDOWEE) Cleamon Bolt, 66, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1993, in Wedowee Hospital 
after an extended illness.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at Bethel West Baptist Church, with Rev. Donald 
Spradlin and Rev. David Holcombe officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Bolt is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katherine Bolt of Wedowee; one daughter, Mrs. Darlene Brown 
of Anniston; three sons, Sherlon Bolt, Stanley Bolt and Stevie Bolt of Wedowee; nine grandchildren; one 
great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Ifrona Sheppard of Lanett; and one brother, R. B. Bolt of Lineville.
   Pallbearers were members of the community.
   Mr. Bolt was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was self-employed in body and 
fender work.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Wyatte Lee Harris

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Wyatte Lee Harris, 82, of Wadley Route 1, were Sunday, Aug. 15, 
1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. James Duke officiating. Burial was at 
Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, Wadley.
   Mr. Harris died Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tuskegee.
   A lifelong resident of Wadley, Mr. Harris was born April 18, 1911, son of Osborne and Alice Clegg 
Harris. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII and was a member of the American Legion and First 
United Methodist Church of Wadley. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Tom Harris.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gail Fowler Harris of Wadley; three step-sons, Mike Coker and Lynn 
Coker of Wadley and Randy Coker of LaFayette; five brothers, Warren C. Harris of Mobile, Robert H. 
Harris of Daphne, James O. Harris of Talladega, Larkin H. Harris of Fairhope and John W. Harris of 
Opelika; seven step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Hurley Pearson, Ray Gay, Sidney Green, Edward Allen, Woodrow Belcher and 
Cleve Aikens.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Glendell Lonnie Fitzgerald

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Glendell Lonnie Fitzgerald, 91, of Roanoke were Saturday, Aug. 7, 
1993, at 11 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Joe French officiating. The remains were to 
be entombed with those of his wife at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a later date.
   Mr. Fitzgerald died Wednesday, Aug. 4, at his residence.
   A former resident of Tucson, Ariz., he was born Feb. 19, 1902, in Granby, Mo., son of James Sanford 
and Lillie Dale White Fitzgerald. He was a retired sergeant-major with the Marine Corps and had served 
during both WWI and WWII. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Tucson, AARP, 
American Legion, Randolph County Historical Society and Amvets.
   Mr. Fitzgerald was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Louise Ola Fitzgerald; a grandson, Andy 
Hartzel; his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Thelma Judd and Mrs. Beulah Nance; and three brothers, Vernon, 
Virgil and Billy Fitzgerald.
   Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Sharon Fitzgerald Taylor of Epworth, Ga., Mrs. Kathryn Ann 
Walker of Bangor, Me., and Mrs. Rose Marie Hartzel of Roanoke; four sisters, Mrs. Jennie Fitzgerald of 
Granby, Mo., Mrs. Sybil Grillo of Long Island, N.Y., Mrs. Lillian Lamer of England and Mrs. Grace 
Boehing of Tulsa, Okla.; three brothers, Shelby Fitzgerald of Granby, Mo., Gene Fitzgerald of Webb 
City, Mo., and Carl Fitzgerald of Tulsa, Okla.; and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
   The family requested that memorial contributions be made to Randolph County Learning Center.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Hales Stanley

   (ROANOKE) Gladys Hales Stanley, 79, of 509 N. Main St., Roanoke, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1993, 
in an Opelika hospital after a short illness.
   Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Haleburg Cemetery, Haleburg, Ala., with Rev. Kevin 
Drake and Herschel Pelham officiating and Holman-Headland Mortuary directing.
   Ms. Stanley was a native of Haleburg, daughter of the late Ulma Hales and Irene Moring Hales. She 
lived in Miami, Fla., most of her lifetime but also lived in Lynn Haven, Fla., before moving to Roanoke 
in 1988. A retired food caterer, Ms. Stanley was a former director of food service at University Baptist 
Church in Coral Gables, Fla., where she was also a member.
   Surviving are an uncle, Curtis Hales of Columbus, Ga., and several cousins, including Douglas and 
Helen Moring of Roanoke and Cotton and Anne Meadows of McAllen, Tex.

Carter Scott

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Carter Scott, 64, of Roanoke were Thursday, Aug. 12, 1993, at 
2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Rev. E. G. Clark and Clayton Scott officiating. Burial was 
in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.
   Mr. Scott died Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A lifelong resident of Route 3, Roanoke, Mr. Scott was born Aug. 8, 1929, son of Earnest Lee Scott 
and Sallie Fannie Burdette Scott. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was a self-
employed livestock dealer.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Earlene Wright Scott of Roanoke; a daughters, Mrs. Gail Staples of 
Lanett; two sons, Dennis Scott of Roanoke and Ricky Scott of Lanett; two step-daughters, Mrs. Phillis 
Taylor of Wadley and Mrs. Debrah Satterwhite of Wedowee; a brother, Lehman Scott of Lanett; and 
14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were K. C. Staples, Chris Taylor, Joey Wilson, Cal Green, Harold Scott and Steve Baldwin.
   Honorary pallbearers were Jack Green, Don Green, Harold Wilson and Jim McKinney.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Earlie Conaway Wilson

   (MONTGOMERY) Funeral services for Earlie Conaway Wilson, 92, of Montgomery, formerly of 
Roanoke, were Monday, Aug. 16, 1993, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Dr. Douglas 
Turner officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Wilson died Saturday, Aug. 14, at South Haven Nursing Home in Montgomery.
   A Clay County native, she was born May 31, 1901, daughter of Jackson and Emily Wilson Conaway. 
She had resided in Montgomery for the past five years. Until her move there, she had resided in Roanoke 
all her life. She was a housewife and a member of Roanoke First Baptist Church. Her husband, W. R. 
Wilson, preceded her in death.
   Mrs. Wilson is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Sue Ashcraft of Montgomery, and a granddaughter, 
Mrs. Carolyn Mullery of Pleasanton, Calif.
   Pallbearers were Bob Kunickis, Bob Cooper, Frank Conaway, Ted Freeman, Ray Freeman and 
W. J. Freeman.
   Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, was in charge of arrangements.

OBITUARIES:

J. P. Doc' Pinkard

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for J. P. Doc Pinkard, 83, of Roanoke were Monday, Aug. 23, 1993, 
at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Virginia Newton and Rev. Harold Bonner 
officiating. Burial was at Mt. Zion Church cemetery.
   Mr. Pinkard died Saturday, Aug. 21, at his residence.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mr. Pinkard was born Jan. 4 ,1910, in Chambers County, son 
of William Franklin and Jessie Osborn Pinkard. He was a member of Roanoke Church of the Nazarene 
and had worked as a mechanic with Fincher Motor Company.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Willie Mae Ritcherson Pinkard of Roanoke; a sister, Mrs. Emily 
Henson of Douglasville, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Randy Lashley, Bob Wylie, Wyatt Henson, Tommy Fincher, Donald Pinkard, Dwight 
Baker and Robert Boggs. Members of Mr. Pinkard's Sunday school class at Mt. Zion Christian Church 
served as honorary pallbearers.
   The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to either Roanoke Church of the Nazarene 
or Mt. Zion Christian Church.

Henry Kirby

   (WOODLAND) Henry Kirby, 87, of Rt. 1, Woodland, died suddenly on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1993, 
at his residence.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21, at Providence Baptist Church, with Rev. Tony 
Morris officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Kirby is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Martha Baldwin of Whitesburg, Ga.; four sons, James Ray 
Kirby of Newell, Donald L. Kirby of Oxford, Tommy Kirby of Bowdon, Ga., and Byron Kirby of 
Anniston; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Randy Kirby, Paul Kirby, Mark Kirby, Greg Baldwin, John Yates, Tim Kirby and 
Chad Whitmore.
   Mr. Kirby was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was a member and active deacon 
of Providence Baptist Church. He was retired from the Randolph County Courthouse as custodian.
   Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Tom Staples

   (ROANOKE) Tom Staples, 70, of Chestnut Street, Roanoke, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1993, at Randolph 
County Hospital, Roanoke.
   The funeral services will be at Vines Funeral Home Chapel, LaFayette, on Wednesday, Aug. 25, at 
11 a.m., with Rev. R. L. Heflin and Rev. Ed Vines officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Grove 
cemetery.
   Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Ross of Roanoke and Mrs. Rosa Poole of Wadley, and 
one brother, Staley Staples of Columbus, Ohio.
   Mr. Staples was a veteran of World War II and was retired from Dunn Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, Roanoke. 
He was born in Randolph County on Mar. 28, 1923.
   The family will gather at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Trammell, 105 Crestwood Drive, 
Roanoke.

John Ray Davis

   (WOODLAND) John Ray Davis, 73, of Rt. 2, Woodland, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1993, 
in Wedowee Hospital, Wedowee.
   Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at Providence Baptist Church, with Rev. Cecil Halsey 
and Rev. Tony Morris officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lorene Davis of Woodland; one daughter, Mrs. Jane Noles of 
LaGrange, Ga.; one son, John S. Davis of Eatonton, Ga.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 
two sisters, Ms. Jeanette Davis of Talladega and Mrs. Ann Cranford of Birmingham; and two brothers, 
Curtis Davis of Washington, D.C., and Billy B. Davis of Pensacola, Fla.
   Mr. Davis was a native of Clay County who lived in Randolph County for most of his life. He was 
retired from the textile industry.

Charlie Fred Johnson

   (ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for Charlie Fred Johnson, 65, of Rock mills were Tuesday, Aug. 24, 
1993, at 2 p.m. from Rock Mills First Baptist Church, with Rev. Tony McManus officiating. Burial was at 
Randolph Memory Gardens with full military honors.
   Mr. Johnson died Monday, Aug. 23, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Johnson was born July 10, 1928, in Rock Mills, son of Amos and Ivey 
Yarbrough Johnson. He was a veteran of the Korean War and had retired from the Air Force in 1967. He 
was a member of Rock Mills First Baptist Church and the Bass Association of America and had worked 
as a welder. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Billy Johnson.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Carter Johnson of Rock Mills, formerly of Greenville, S.C.; 
a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Rena Parker of Franklin, Ga.; a son, Chuck Johnson of Rock Mills; a brother, 
Leroy Johnson of Rock Mills; and six granddaughters.
   Honorary pallbearers were Tony Moore, Jerry Morgan, Terry Brown, Wallace Burson, Will Towler, 
Bryan Kirby, Travis Smith and Howard Hand.
   The family requests no flowers and suggests memorial contributions to Rock Mills First Baptist Church 
or Chattahoochee Hospice.

Lucille Hardnett

   (DAVISTON) Funeral services for Lucille Hardnett, 47, of Daviston were Friday, Aug. 20, 1993, 
at 2 p.m. form Coger Hill C.M.E. Methodist Church, Daviston, with Rev. James Carlisle officiating. 
Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Miss Hardnett died Monday, Aug. 16.
   A native of Tallapoosa County, she was born Dec. 24, 1945, to Josh and Emma Hardnett. She was 
a member of Coger Hill C.M.E. Methodist Church.
   Survivors include a son, Johnny Hardnett of Daviston; her parents, Josh and Emma Hardnett of 
Daviston; five sisters, Mrs. Gladys Staples, Mrs. Louise Thomas and Mrs. Marline Rowe of Wadley, Mrs. 
Pauline Walker of Jamaica, N.Y., and Mrs. Mable Hardnett of New York.
   Pallbearers were friends and nieces.

Roney Preston Daniel

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Roney Preston Daniel, 82, of Roanoke were Thursday, Aug. 19, 
1993, at 10 a.m. from Roanoke First Baptist Church, with Dr. Douglas Turner officiating. Burial was at 
Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Daniel died Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A resident of Roanoke for most of his life, Mr. Daniel was born July 29, 1908, in Heard County, Ga., 
son of James and Lula Victoria Cavender Daniel. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was 
a member of Roanoke First Baptist Church, and worked as a self-employed plumber. Mr. Daniel was 
preceded in death by a son, Bobby G. Daniel.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Stevens Daniel of Roanoke; a son, Preston S. Daniel of Virginia 
Beach, Va.; a brother, Handley J. Daniel of LaGrange, Ga.; four grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Earl Manning, Bobby G. Daniel II, Jimmy Sprayberry, Larry Daniel, Dewey Stevens 
and Earl Stevens.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Roanoke First Baptist Church.

Minnie Lee Scales

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Minnie Lee Scales, 84, of Wedowee were Thursday, Aug. 19, 1993, 
at 2 p.m. from Stephen Mission United Methodist Church, Wedowee, with Rev. Robert Smith officiating. 
Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Scales died Monday, Aug. 16, at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   A native of Randolph County, Mrs. Scales as born Apr. 22, 1909, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Major 
Robertson. She was a member of Pine Flat Primitive Baptist Church, Wedowee, and Stephen Mission 
United Methodist Church. One daughter, Frances, preceded her in death.
   Survivors include her husband, Leonard Scales of Wedowee; one daughter, Linda Ross of Wedowee; 
three sons, Robert Scales, James Scales and Leon Scales of Illinois; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-
grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Lonnie M. Carter and Mrs. Texanna Denney of Lineville, Mrs. Vera 
Scales of Maywood, Ill., and Mrs. Elizabeth Potter of Wadley; and one brother, Thomas Robertson of 
Wedowee.
   Pallbearers were sons and grandsons.
