OBITUARIES

Elsie Bailey Carden

 (ROANOKE) Services for Elsie Bailey Carden, 90, of Roanoke will be Wednesday,
Aug. 4, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom
Russell and the Rev. Tommy Burke officiating. Mrs. Carden will lie in state one
hour before services at the church. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory
Gardens.
 Mrs. Carden died Monday, Aug. 2, at Brightmoor Nursing Center.
 Survivors include three daughters, Gwen White of Griffin, Ga., Jean Hall of
Roanoke and Peggy McKay of Atlanta; five grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers will be Bud Bailey, Wilbur Steward, John McKay, Mark Hall,
Charles Slagle, Matt McEwen and Jimmy Baird.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Carden was born Aug. 9, 1913, daughter of
William Allen and Emma Cass Birdsong Bailey. She was a member of Rock Mills
United Methodist Church and a seamstress at Palm Beach. Mrs. Carden was
preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Swann Carden; six brothers; six
sisters; and a son-in-law.
 Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Elsie Mae Rollins

 (WOODLAND) Services for Elsie Mae Rollins, 86, of Woodland were Sunday, 
Aug. 1, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Rocky Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. J. C. 
Holloway and the Rev. David Waldrep officiating. Burial was at old Rocky Branch 
Baptist Cemetery.
 Mrs. Rollins died Saturday, July 30, at the home of a special friend in Fort
Payne.
 Survivors include two sons, Thomas Barry Rollins of Woodland and Tony Rollins
of Cragford; one sister, Velma Nichols of Roanoke; one brother, Dennis L. Smith
of LaGrange, Ga.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
 Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.
 A Randolph County native born Feb. 14, 1918, Mrs. Rollins was the daughter of
Benjamin Jeff and Mattie Bowen Smith. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church
and many church groups, including the Women's Missionary Union. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Rev. J. T. Rollins, and granddaughter, 
OS2 Amanda Lynn Rollins.
 Pallbearers were Chad Thomas Rollins, Matthew Robert Rollins, Corey Norrell,
Melvin Lum, Aaron Smith and Wayne Smith.
 Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Theodore R. Griffin Jr.

 (FIVE POINTS) Theadore R. Griffin Jr., 70, of Five Points died Thursday, 
July 22, 2004, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
 Services were at Sweet Home Baptist Church, Five Points, on Tuesday, July 27,
at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Allen Simpson officiating. Interment was in the church
cemetery.
 Mr. Griffin was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church, where he served as a
deacon. Mr. Griffin retired from the Navy after 30 years of service, serving
during both the Cuban Crisis and the Vietnam War. He then had a 14-year career
with Alagasco. Mr. Griffin was noted for always being concerned about the
well-being of others and constantly helping others.
 Surviving are a devoted wife of 43 years, Betty J. Griffin; two sons,
Theodore R. Griffin III and Robert B. Griffin of Five Points; five daughters,
Anita Gardner of Houston, Texas, Regina Griffin of Roanoke, and LaRita D.
Griffin, LaToya Griffin and Victoria Griffin of Five Points; one brother, Marvin
Griffin of Houston, Texas; four sisters, Frances O'Neal of Atwater, Calif.,
Virginia Evans of Indianapolis, Ind., Quida Peay of Five Points and Annie Hearn
of Indianapolis; five grandsons; two granddaughters and many more relatives and
friends.
 Arrangements were by Vine Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Charlie Lewis Slaughter

 (FIVE POINTS) Charlie Lewis Slaughter, 73, of Five Points died Saturday, 
July 31, 2004, at his residence.
 Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. CDT at Sweet Home Baptist
Church in Five Points with the Rev. Allen Simpson officiating. Burial followed
in Friendship Baptist #2 Cemetery in LaFayette.
 Mr. Slaughter is survived by one brother, Walker Slaughter of Roanoke; and
two sisters, Mattie Slaughter of Five Points and Emma Gray of Atlanta.
 He was born Dec. 25, 1930, in Chambers County.
 Arrangements were by Silmon/Seroyer Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Bernice Bentley

 (EASTABOGA) Services for Bernice Bentley, 77, of Eastaboga were at 11 a.m.
Friday, July 23, 2004, at Miller Funeral Home in Oxford with the Rev. T. J.
Morgan officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church
Cemetery.
 Mrs. Bentley died Tuesday, July 20, at her home.
 Survivors include a daughter, Linda Roberts of Eastaboga; two sons, Jerry
Bentley of Graham and Sammy Bentley of Eastaboga; four sisters, Eldora Butler,
Reba Ingram and Jean Gaines, all of Heflin, and Liz Smith of Port St. Lucie,
Fla.; three brothers, Clarence Morgan, Charles Morgan and Bobby Morgan, all of
Heflin; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and her caregivers, Lisa and
Cameron Dutton.
 Pallbearers were Greg Bentley, Kevin Brown, Matthew Bentley, Keith Roberts,
Randy Wiggins and Bobby Shelton.
 Mrs. Bentley was a lifelong Eastaboga resident. She was preceded in death by
her husband, William Bentley; her parents, Jeff Morgan and Vader Harris Morgan;
a son-in-law, Jimmy "Decoy" Roberts; and several brothers and sisters.

Clifford Story

 (VALLEY) Clifford Story, 82, of Valley died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at his
residence.
 Graveside services were Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. at Reeds Chapel Baptist
Church Cemetery in West Point, Ga., with the Rev. Rusty Letson officiating.
 He is survived by five children, Martha Richardson, Clifford Story Jr., Joan
Story and Vickie Bell all of Valley, and Gregg Story of Waverly; four sisters,
Lorene Oliver of New Site, Mary Sessions of Wadley, Ethel McGill of LaGrange,
Ga., and Goldie Caldwell of Texas; 14 grandchildren, numerous
great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
 Born July 9, 1922, in Tallapoosa County, Mr. Story was the son of the late
Pearl Moran Story and Henry Franklin Story. He was a former employee of
WestPoint Pepperell's Lanett Mill and a veteran of World War II, where he served
with the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his son, Donnie Story.
 Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the charity of one's
choice in his memory.
 Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Barbara Jean Whaley Mitchell

 (WEDOWEE) Services for Barbara Jean Whaley Mitchell, 71, of Wedowee, were
Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Liberty Church of Christ, with Bro. J. L.
Sparks officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
 Mrs. Mitchell died Friday, July 30, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
 Survivors include her husband, Louie Timothy Mitchell; three daughters, Trina
King and Denna Barnett of Stockbridge, Ga., and Tonya Hudson of Lineville; one
son, Louie Timothy Mitchell Jr. of Lineville; 14 grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Russell Holland, Brad Mitchell, Chad Mitchell, Timothy
Mitchell III, Adam King, Christopher King, Brett Barnett and Christian Aybar.
 Mrs. Mitchell was born Oct. 6, 1932, daughter of Harvey Lee and Mary Pearl
Jenkins Whaley. She was a member of Liberty Church of Christ.
 Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Ann Weathers White

 (AUBURN) Services for Ann Weathers White, 70, of Auburn, formerly of Roanoke,
were Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Springfield Baptist Church, with the
Rev. Roger Woodard officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memory Gardens.
 Mrs. White died Friday, July 30, at Bethany House of Opelika.
 Survivors include her husband, Tommy White; two sisters, Jenny Pike of
Roanoke and Mary Manley of Auburn; and three brothers, Buck, Joe and Mike
Weathers, all of Roanoke.
 Pallbearers were Gary Manley, Stevan Pike, Chris Weathers, Wade Weathers,
Matt Weathers, Keith Manley, Alan Manley, Mark Manley and Shane Weathers.
 A Randolph County native, she was born Sept. 9, 1933, daughter of Herbert and
Mary Breed Weathers. Mrs. White was a member of Springfield Baptist Church and
formerly was employed at Palm Beach Company.

Martha Catherine Gray Wilson

 (WADLEY) Services for Martha Catherine Gray Wilson, 78, of Wadley were
Friday, July 30, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.
Bill Calhoun and the Rev. Stanley Owen officiating. Burial was in Forresters
Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
 Mrs. Wilson died Wednesday, July 28, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical
Center, Anniston.
 Survivors include on [one]daughter, Phyllis Daniel of Oxford; one
granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.
 Pallbearers were Mike Bennett, Randy Cummings, Bobby Parmer, Craig Calhoun,
Tony Motely and Shenan Motely.
 Mrs. Wilson was born April 30, 1926, daughter of Charles Dewey and Eva Mae
Wright Gray. She was a member of Gray Hill Church of God and was retired from
Handley Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Herman Wilson.

Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, Tommy Carson, 412 Co. Rd. 826, Wadley, AL 86276.

Clara Mickle

 (LAFAYETTE) Clara Mickle, 79, of LaFayette died Friday, July 30, 2004, 
at Florence Hand Home, LaGrange, Ga.
 Services were at LaFayette Heights Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Monday,
August 2, 2ith [with] interment in LaFayette City Cemetery. The Rev. Paul
Howard officiated.
 Mrs. Mickle was born in Tallapoosa County Feb. 14, 1925. She was retired
from Avondale Mills as personnel manager after 44 years. She graduated from
Southern Union State Junior College when she was 52 years old. She was a member
of LaFayette Heights Baptist Church of LaFayette.
 Surviving are two daughters, Toni Cauble of LaGrange, Ga., and Brenda Murray
of LaFayette; one son, Sid Mickle of LaGrange; one sister, Zelma Lamb of
LaFayette; three brothers Royce White of Abanda, Harold White of LaFayette and
Larry White of Opelika; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LaFayette Heights Baptist
Church.
 Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Rebecca Branch

 (CRAGFORD) Services for Rebecca Branch, 64, of Cragford were at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Mellow Valley Baptist Church with the Revs. Tommy
Young, Jerry Wheeles and Jerry Patterson officiating. Burial was in Bethany
Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
 Mrs. Branch died Monday, July 26, at her home.
 Survivors include her husband, Wayne Branch; two daughters, Jill Roberson of
Lineville and Wynema Gilbert of, Ashland; a son, Dennis Branch of Savannah, Ga.;
a sister, Mary Jim Garrett of Wadley; and six grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were deacons of Mellow Valley Baptist Church, Brad Gilbert and
Payton Gilbert.
 Mrs. Branch, a Randolph County native, lived most of her life in Clay County. 
She was a member of Mellow Valley Baptist Church. She had been employed with
Alexander City Outlook in the advertising department and with Credit Bureau in
Alexander City as a credit manager.
 Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Lineville.

Jack Staples

 (LANETT) Jack Staples, 70, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at George H. Lanier
Memorial Hospital in Valley.
 A memorial service is scheduled Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 11 a.m. at McCarthy
Funeral Home Chapel in West Point, Ga., with the Rev. Gary C. Cotney
officiating.
 Mr. Staples is survived by his wife, Alice Crowder Staples of Lanett; one
daughter, Kay Zito of Atlanta; two sons, Danny Staples of Lanett and Keith
Newton of Hiram, Ga.; one sister, Jean Lashley of Lanett; two brothers, Joe
Staples of Roanoke and Mike Staples of Atlanta; six grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
 Born in Chambers County April 6, 1934, Mr. Staples was the son of the late
Ida Pearl Pogue Staples and the late William B. "Bill" Staples of Lanett. He
was the owner and operator of Valley Supply Co. on Cusseta Road for more than 
30 years before his retirement. Mr. Staples was an avid vintage car collector 
and loved to restore old automobiles.
 In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to your favorite
charity in Mr. Staples' memory.

James 'David' McWhorter

 (WEST POINT, Ga.) James "David" McWhorter, 35, of West Point, Ga., died
Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Newnan West Hospital, Newnan, Ga.
 Mr. McWhorter was born March 24, 1969, in Chambers County, son of Polly Brook
McWhorter and the late Jimmy D. McWhorter. He had lived in West Point for the
13 years and was a millwright with Ava Industrial Contractors.
 A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, atHunter-Allen- 
Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, Ga., with the Rev. Gary Kirkendall officiating.
 Surviving are his wife, Karen Schmitte McWhorter of West Point; a son, James
David "Jamie" McWhorter Jr. of West Point; his mother; one brother, Joseph
Matthew "Matt" McWhorter of Valley; two sisters, Dianne Lynn McWhorter of
LaGrange and Dana Noon of Williamson, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
 The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, Polly McWhorter,
at 211 Cumberland Dr., LaGrange, from 6, to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
 Arrangements were by Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home, LaGrange.

Cornelius Lee 'C.L.' Parmer

 (ROANOKE) Services for Cornelius Lee "C.L." Parmer, 64, of Roanoke will be
Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.
Jim Dykes officiating. Bob Honeycut will deliver the eulogy. Burial will
follow at Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery.
 Mr. Parmer died Monday, Aug. 9, from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
 Survivors include his wife, Janett Henderson Parmer; one son, Ricky Parmer;
two grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Cole; and a brother, Jerry Parmer; all of
Roanoke.
 Pallbearers will be Danny Parmer, Wayne Parmer, Pace Cole, Randy Whaley,
Brady Golden, Matt Dalrymple, Jacky Warren and Bob Honeycut.
 A Randolph County native and life-long resident, Mr. Parmer was born Dec. 5,
1939, son of Walter Lee and Ruby Weldon Parmer. He was a member of Bethel
Baptist Church at Welch and had been employed as a supervisor with Amoco Fabrics
and Fibers.

Viola Kerr Lowe

 (ROANOKE) Services for Viola Kerr Lowe, 77, of Roanoke were Saturday, Aug. 7,
2004, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Roanoke, with the Rev. John
Mann and the Revs.[sic] Bart Lester officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City
Cemetery.
 Mrs. Lowe died Friday, Aug. 6, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange.
 Survivors include her husband, J. K. Lowe of Cumming, Ga.; two daughters,
Patty Huey of Roanoke and Sandra Arendall of Birmingham; two sisters, Lucy
Murphy of Newell and Joyce Neighbors of Huntsville; three brothers, Howard and
Thomas Kerr of Huntsville and Floyd Kerr of North Port, Calif.; three
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Matthew Hutchinson, Matt Hutchinson, R. L. Farmer, Mark
Farmer, Keith Farmer and Grant Alspaugh.
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Lowe was born Oct. 12, 1926, daughter of
Joseph U. and Alma Thompson Kerr. She attended Auburn University, where she
received a master's degree. She was retired as a math teacher in Chambers
County and also worked at Gayfers in Auburn. She was a member of Roanoke First
United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and a
daughter, Miriam Whaley.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Adell Lindley Pyle

 (ANNISTON) Graveside services for Adell Lindley Pyle, 78, of Anniston were at
2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Forestlawn Gardens with the Rev. Mike Foreman
officiating.
 Mrs. Pyle died Saturday, Aug. 7, in Anniston.
 Survivors include her husband, Gerald Pyle; a son, Terry Pyle of Anniston;
and two sisters, Estell Ledbetter of Anniston and Vera Mitchell of Wedowee.
 Mrs. Pyle, a Randolph County native, had lived in Calhoun County the past 54
years. She retired as manager of Qwik Shops Groceries. She was preceded in
death by her parents, Mary Jane and Jack Lindley; a brother, Roy Lindley; and
two sisters, Zadie Hill and Morine Bolt.
 Arrangements were by Gray Brown-Service Mortuary.

Henry D. Farrar

 (GREENVILLE, Ga.) Henry D. Farrar, 75, of Greenville, Ga., died Thursday,
Aug. 5, 2004, at Hospice LaGrange.
 Mr. Farrar was born Oct. 17, 1928, in Randolph County, son of the late Lewis
and Sallie Abbott Farrar. An Army paratrooper during World War II, he was a
former resident of LaGrange and Panama City, Fla., and had lived in Greenville
since 1996. He served as a charter boat captain in Panama City from 1959 to
1979 and was a longtime captain of the August Moon of Panama City. He retired
from West Point Pepperell Manufacturing Company, was a member of State Line
Congregational Christian Church and was a member of the Pro Bass Fisherman
Association.
 Survivors include his companion and caregiver, Elizabeth Brazil of
Greenville; a son, Steve Farrar of LaGrange; a daughter, Freddie Brennan of
Clearwater, Fla.; two brothers, Edwin Farrar of Abbottsford, Ga., and Richard
Farrar of Lanett; a sister, Joy Pike of Fredonia; four grandchildren and a
great-grandchild.
 Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Shadowlawn Cemetery
with Brandon Brooks officiating.
 Arrangements were by Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home.

Melba Doris Dean Norred

 (ROANOKE) Services for Melba Doris Dean Norred, 85, of Roanoke were Saturday,
Aug. 7, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Lebanon Christian Church, with the Rev. Roger Jones
and the Rev. Hugh Vines officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
 Mrs. Norred died Wednesday, Aug. 4, at Bethany House in Opelika.
 Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Norred and Pam Norred-Kidd of
Roanoke; one brother, James Dean of Whitesburg, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Barrett Shelnutt, Mike Strain, Ted Strain, Frank Royston,
Hal Dean and Greg Norred.
 The family requests flowers or donations to Bethany House (c/o East Alabama
Medical Center, 2000 Pepperell Pkwy., Opelika 36802) or Lebanon Christian Church
(c/o Wayne Cato).
 A Randolph County native, Mrs. Norred was born Nov. 13, 1918, daughter of
Jefferson Lee and Mable Whitman Dean. She was a member of Lebanon Christian
Church, a chiropractic assistant to her husband, Dr. William Blake Norred, and
secretary/treasurer at Lebanon Christian Church for many years. Mrs. Norred was
preceded in death by her husband.
 Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Ricky C. Wilson

 (ROANOKE) Services for Ricky C. Wilson, 41, of Roanoke will be Thursday, 
Aug. 12, 2004, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald 
Sheppard and the Rev. Jody Overton officiating. Burial will follow in Center 
Chapel Cemetery.
 The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on
Wednesday.
 Mr. Wilson died Monday, Aug. 9, from injuries sustained in a car accident.
 Survivors include his wife, Sondra Nichols Wilson of Roanoke; one daughter,
Connie Wilson of Roanoke; two sons, Scotty Wilson and Jonathan Wilson of
Roanoke; three grandchildren; his mother, Peggy Canada of Roanoke; one sister,
Cathy Wood of Roanoke; one brother, Terry Farmer of LaGrange; and four nephews.
 Pallbearers will be Ronald Dewberry, James Ramsey, Brian Goss, Chad Smith,
Randy Weathers and Brent Wilson.
 A Randolph County native, Mr. Wilson was born Dec. 18, 1962, son of Walter
Curtis and Peggy Jean Ramsey Wilson. He was a member of Neighbor House of
Prayer and was employed by Scott Enterprises as a mechanic. Mr. Wilson was
preceded in death by his father.
 Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Rosa Mae Lipham

 (ROANOKE) Services for Rosa Mae Lipham, 93, of Roanoke, formerly of Wedowee,
will be Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev.
Don Paris officiating. Burial will follow in the Wedowee City Cemetery.
 The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 until
11 a.m.
 Miss Lipham died Monday, Aug. 9, at Roanoke HealthCare Center.
 Miss Lipham is survived by several nieces and nephews.
 Pallbearers will be the deacons of First Baptist Church of Wedowee.
 Miss Lipham was born Sept. 11, 1910, daughter of Richard Nathan Lipham and
Cynthia Fowler Lipham. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Wedowee. 
She was retired from the Town of Wedowee as an assistant town clerk and had
worked for Tri County Telephone Company as an operator for many years. She was
a member of Wedowee Senior Citizens group, Wedowee Homemakers Club, Kathleen
Mallory Missionary Circle, past president and secretary of Clubs Circle, past
president and secretary of Joy Kapp Sunday School Class, and had served as
church clerk.
 Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Alfred C. Harrison

 (OPELIKA) Retired Major Gen. Alfred C. Harrison, A.U.S., died
Monday, Aug. 9, 2004. He had more than 38 years service in the Army, Army
Reserve and Alabama National Guard. During this time, he commanded the 1st
Battalion, 167th Infantry; the 2nd Battle Group, 167th Infantry of Roanoke; and
the 31st Infantry, Dixie Division. He was the adjutant general of Alabama from
1963 to 1971 and served in this position under three governors. General
Harrison was preceded in death by his wife, Erin Underwood Harrison.
 He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Robert M. Howard Jr.; two grandsons and
two great-grandsons.
 Graveside services will be held at Rosemere Cemetery on Wednesday, Aug. 11,
at 10 a.m. with military honors followed by a memorial service at Trinity United
Methodist Church, Opelika, at 11 a.m.

Minnie Lee Putman

 (WEDOWEE) Services for Minnie Lee Putman, 59, of Wedowee were Saturday, Aug.
7, 2004, at 11 p.m. at Heaven Bound Church of God, with the Rev. Freddie Whitley
and the Rev. Louis Cushings officiating. Burial was at Valley Grove Primitive
Baptist Church Cemetery.
 Mrs. Putman died Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
 Survivors include two sisters, Kathy Cotton and Lula Pitts of Wedowee; one
granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
 Pallbearers were Terry Walker, Doug Sheppard, Rance Meadows, Benny Sheppard,
Chester Huckabee, Arvel Sheppard and Junior Walker.
 Mrs. Putman was born Nov. 25, 1944, daughter of Calvin C. and Bertha Mae
Kirby Cobb. She was a member of Zion Church of God and Eastern Star. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Lewis W. Putman Jr.; a sister, Leatha Ann
Walker; and a son, Hershel Lee Mears Jr.

Edwin Milton Flickinger Jr.

 (LINEVILLE) Edwin Milton Flickinger Jr., 55, of Lineville died Tuesday, 
Aug. 3, 2004, at his home. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Flickinger 
in Spring Grove, Pa.
 Mr. Flickinger is survived by one daughter, April L. Jessee of Spring Grove,
Pa.; his mother, Clara Flickinger of New Oxford, Pa.; four sisters, three
brothers; and four grandchildren.
 Mr. Flickinger was born Jan. 19, 1949, son of Edwin Milton and Clara Ruth
Snyder Flickinger Sr. He was a truck driver for Southern Express. Mr.
Flickinger was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Flickinger.

Irene Foster Presley

 (SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.) Irene Foster Presley died July 16, 2004, in San
Bernardino, Calif., of natural causes.
 She was the daughter of Charles T. Foster and Aldora Farr Foster of Rock
Mills. Born in Rock Mills, Irene spent most of her life in other locations,
including Georgia, Idaho, New York, Germany and Turkey before settling in
California. Irene was an independent, self-sufficient person with a good sense
of humor.
 She is survived by her daughter, Patsy Carole Presley; and her grandson, Maj.
Seth Jefferson McKee III, USAF; and her brother, Rudolph Foster, as well as
extended family.
 She will be interred at Wehadkee Cemetery in Rock Mills. A memorial service
will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church.

Leonard Clayton 'Skip' Kelley

 (NOKESVILLE, Va.) Graveside services for Leonard Clayton "Skip" Kelley, 70,
of Nokesville, Va., formerly of Rock Mills, were Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at 
11 a.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Tom Russell officiating.
 Mr. Kelley died Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Prince William Hospital.
 Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mildred T. Kelley; one daughter,
Teresa Sutton of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Eileen "Sister" Capps of
Kentucky, Lucille Fennimore of New Jersey and Suzie Maple of Vermont; one
grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
 In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to "Kelley's Kids" Fund in care
of Rock Mills School, 415 Co. Rd. 75, Roanoke, AL 36274 or to The Gideons

position of choir director for seven years. He also served as Sunday school

Owell G. Foster

 (BOWDON, Ga.) Owell G. Foster, 69, of Bowdon, Ga., died Thursday, Aug. 12,
2004.
 Mr. Foster was born March 6, 1935, son of the late Gay and Ida Vera Yarbrough
Foster of Randolph County. Mr. Foster was self-employed and was a member of
Bowdon Baptist Church.
 In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant son, Jeffery
Owell Foster, and two brothers, Joel Foster and Garry Foster.
 He is survived by his wife, Jean McLeod Foster; a son, Phil Foster of Foley;
two daughters, Vicki Cowart and Beth Garrett of Carrollton, Ga.; four grandsons
and two granddaughters.
 Services were Sunday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. at Bowdon Baptist Church, with Dr.
Ron Huggins and the Rev. Gerald Rogers officiating. Eulogy was given by Joe
Young. Music was by George Cosper and Bowdon Baptist Church Quartet. 
Pallbearers were Joe Young, Bart Loftin, Mackie Boyd, Elliott Butler, Robert
Johnson and Brian Foster. Interment was in Bowdon City Cemetery.

Myrtle Irene Kent

 (CRAGFORD) Services for Myrtle Irene Kent, 90, of Cragford were at 2 p.m.
Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with the Rev.
Claude Bennett officiating. Burial was in County Line Baptist Church Cemetery.
 Mrs. Kent died Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Clay County Hospital.
 Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Janette Bueche' of Marshall, Texas; a
son, James Leonard Smith of Cragford; three brothers, Price Nunn of Lineville,
G. C. Nunn of Talladega and Arthur Owen of Prattville; nine grandchildren, 19
great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
 Mrs. Kent, a Clay County native and former Randolph County resident, had
lived most of her life in Clay County. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist
Church. She had been employed with Cotton Mills at Bemiston in Talladega,
Alexander City and Lanett for more than 45 years.

Alan A. Waits

 (OXFORD) Services for Alan A. Waits, 72, of Oxford were at 4 p.m. Friday,
Aug. 13, 2004, at Edgewood Congregational Methodist Church in Anniston with 
Dr. Bill Snow officiating. Burial was in Forestlawn Gardens.
 Mr. Waits died Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Regional Medical Center.
 Survivors include his wife, Olean Waits; a daughter, Saundra Carter of
Oxford; two sons, Brian Waits and Steven Waits of Oxford; three sisters, Elsie
Cosper, Lila Lipham and Mary Fields, all of Wedowee; a brother, Millard Waits of
San Angelo, Texas; and five grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Ray Banks, Aaron Taylor, Willie Fleming, Roy Lee Ledbetter,
Ray Morrison and Daryl Fleming.
 Mr. Waits, a Cleburne County native, had lived in Oxford 50 years. He was a
member of Edgewood Congregational Methodist Church and the Seniors Sunday School
Class. A Korean War veteran, he received two bronze stars. He retired from
Fort McClellan and had worked at the Holiday Inn and for Terminal Building and
Public Supply in Gadsden. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and
Cora Waits; a brother, Curtis Waits; and two sisters, Jean Craft and Evelyn
Sasser.
 Arrangements were by Miller Funeral Home, Oxford.

James Louis 'Lou' Dobson

 (GADSDEN) Services for James Louis "Lou" Dobson, 79, of Gadsden were at 10:30
a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Collier-Butler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob
Edmondson officiating. Graveside services were at 2 p.m., at Corinth North
Baptist Church Cemetery in Randolph County.
 Mr. Dobson died Monday, Aug. 9, at Gadsden Regional Medical Center.
 Survivors include his wife, Clara Braden Dobson, formerly of Anniston; a
daughter, Beverly Jensen; a sister, Lucy Yocum of Muscatine, Iowa; and two
step-grandchildren.
 Mr. Dobson was a member of First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff, where he
served as a substitute Sunday school teacher. A World War II Army Air Corp
veteran, he served as an aviation cadet and as a regimental chaplain with the
First Marine Division during the Korean War. He was a teacher and an
administrator in Davenport, Iowa. He was preceded in death by two brothers,
Odell Dobson and Curtis Dobson; and his parents.

Inez Caffey

 (ANNISTON) Services for Inez Caffey, 79, of Anniston will be 11 a.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at Morris Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Morris
Weatherly officiating. Burial will be in Eden Hills Cemetery with Anniston
Funeral Service in charge.
 Mrs. Caffey died Friday, Aug. 13, at her home.
 Survivors include two sisters, Rosie Drake of Roanoke and Mary Finney of
Anniston; and a brother, Johnny Scales of Cleveland, Ohio.
 Pallbearers were friends of the family.
 Mrs. Caffey, a Randolph County native, had lived in Anniston most of her
life. She was a member of Morris Hill Baptist Church.

Chad V. Parker

 (WOODLAND) Chad V. Parker, 25, of County Road 63, Woodland, died Friday, 
Aug. 20, 2004, at Wedowee Hospital.
 Services will be Friday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Missionary Baptist
Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. William Phillips and the Rev. Burnett Jackson
officiating. Interment will be in Skyview Memorial Gardens, Welch.
 Surviving are his wife, Delorise Parker of Woodland; his parents, Charlotte
Parker and Charlie Will Parker of Wedowee; two sons, Chadarius Parker and
Cortavious Parker of Woodland; two brothers, Christopher Parker of Woodland and
Charles Parker of Wedowee; a sister, Karren Marable of Wedowee; and two
stepsisters, Brandy Drummond of Wedowee and Denise Glenn of Ben Harbor, Mich.
 Public viewing at the funeral home will be Thursday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. 
Family hour will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday. The body will be placed in
the church one hour before services.

Annie Lou Jones Mize

 (DELTA) Services for Annie Lou Jones Mize, 77, of Delta were at 2 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at Dryden Funeral Home in Heflin with the Revs. Wayne
Adams and Ronnie Adams officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.
 Mrs. Mize died Sunday, Aug. 22, at her home.
 Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Linda and Willie Bachus of
Delta; a son, Tommy Mize of Wedowee; and two grandchildren.
 Pallbearers were Kirk Mize, Kraig Mize, Mike Randall, Scott Randall, Shannon
Steward and Tim Steward.
 Mrs. Mize, a Calhoun County native, had lived in Cleburne County the past 20
years. She was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church.

Rev. Horace E. Grizzle

 (SYLACAUGA) Memorial services for the Rev. Horace E. Grizzle, 69, of
Sylacauga were 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, with the Revs. Luther Williams,
Matt Hilyer, Bill Gresham and Stephen Dean officiating. Burial was in Evergreen
Cemetery with Radney-Smith Funeral Services in charge.
 Rev. Grizzle died Saturday, Aug. 21.
 Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Stone Grizzle; a son, Richard Grizzle of
Sylacauga; a daughter, Karen Dean of Roanoke; a brother-in-law and
sister-in-law; and a granddaughter.
 Rev. Grizzle, a longtime Sylacauga resident, was associate pastor of Five
Points Baptist Church and director of missions of the Central Baptist
Association. He had served as pastor of several churches in the Coosa River
Baptist Association while teaching at Sylacauga High School. He had also
pastored in Washington and Cleburne counties.

or The American Heart Association.

Allison Cockrell Singleton

 (OXFORD) Services for Allison Cockrell Singleton, 26, of Oxford were Tuesday,
Aug. 24, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Iron City Baptist Church, with the Revs. Noel Dear
and Don Cox officiating. Burial followed in Forestlawn Gardens Cemetery with
Miller Funeral Home in charge.
 Mrs. Singleton died Saturday, Aug. 21, in Oxford.
 Survivors include her husband, Lee Singleton of Oxford; her parents, Gary and
Linda Cockrell of Wedowee; two brothers, Brandon Cockrell of Phenix City and
Grant Cockrell of Sylacauga; her grandparents, Melvin and Jewel Cox of Oxford,
and Vassar Sellers of Oxford; and three nephews.
 Pallbearers were Brandon Cockrell, Grant Cockrell, Phil Bussey, Chris
Singleton, Lee Singleton and Tony Snider.
 Mrs. Singleton was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County, a graduate of White
Plains High School and a member of Iron City Baptist Church. Mrs. Singleton was
attending Jacksonville State University, where she was completing her master's
degree in counseling. She was a teacher at Randolph Park Elementary School. 
Mrs. Singleton was preceded in death by her sister, Dana Cockrell and her
grandfather, Lindsey Clark.
 In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Iron City
Baptist Church building fund.

Autumn LeAnn Benefield

 (HEFLIN) Graveside services for Autumn LeAnn Benefield, age 3 days, of Helfin
[sic] were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Harmony Congregational
Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. James Benefield officiating.
 Autumn died Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
 Survivors include her father, Tonda Benefield, and mother, Candance Clifton,
both of Heflin; one sister, Amber Morgan of Woodland; her grandparents, Lee and
JoAnn Daniel of Hightower, Doyle and Sharon Benefield of Heflin, and Glenda
Watson of Wedowee; great-grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Leford Waters of Wedowee; and
several aunts and uncles.
 Autumn was preceded in death by two brother[s], Doyle Justin Benefield and
Noah Levi Benefield; and grandparents Tom and Louise Hill.

Charlie Clark

 (HUGULEY) Charlie Clark Jr., 77, of Huguley died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, 
at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
 Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 21, at 11 a.m. at Johnson Brown-Service
Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Revs. Rusty Letson and Floyd Aikens
officiating. Burial followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
 Mr. Clark is survived by his wife, Pauline Clark; four sons, Jimmy Clark of
Calhoun, Ga., Jeff Clark and "Turtle" Allen Clark of Huguley and Robbie Clark of
Valley; two sisters, Doris Wood of Roanoke and Betty Toole of Valley; four
brothers, Thomas F. Clark and Barney Clark of Georgia and Joe Clark and Larry
Clark of Alabama; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
 Born May 24, 1928, in Alabama, Mr. Clark was the son of the late Eula Bell
Whitlock Clark and Charlie Lindsey Clark. He had worked with WestPoint Stevens
for 42 years. He loved watching the Braves, gardening and yard work. He was
preceded in death by his son, Jerry Clark, and his brother, Tony Clark.

 (ROANOKE) Bertha Houston Smith, 99, of Roanoke, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004,
at Riverview Hospital, Gadsden.
 Services will be Thursday, Aug. 26, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church,
Wadley, with the Rev. Calvin Trammell, the Rev. Robert L. Heflin and the Rev.
Stafford Rowser officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
 Survivors include a daughter, Lera Rowser of Attalla; two brothers, John
Wesley Houston of Wedowee and the Rev. Andrew Houston; five sisters, Velma
Wright of Wedowee, Eddie Lee Knox and Jessie Turner of Tuscaloosa, Mollie Mae
Heflin of Wadley and Mildred Stitt of Buffalo, MY.; three grandchildren and
eight great-grandchildren.
 She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. W. S. Smith.
Public viewing will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on
Wednesday. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the funeral
services.

 (ROANOKE) Cedric Antonio Young, 19, of Roanoke, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004,
