OBITUARIES:

John Harrington Arnton' Marshall, 100

     (WASHINGTON, D.C.) John Harrington Arnton Marshall, 100, of Washington, 
D.C., died Wednesday, March 23, 1994, at Thomas House Baptist Retirement Home in 
Washington.
     Funeral services were Saturday, March 26, at Calvary Baptist Church, Washington, 
with the Rev. Dr. Lynn Bergfalk officiating. Interment was at Cedar Hill Cemetery in 
Suitland, Md.
     A Randolph County native, Mr. Marshall was born July 4, 1893, in the Concord 
community, son of John C. and Ada S. Marshall. He had lived for many years in 
Washington, where he had a successful career with the United States postal services.
     He is survived by a brother, Clarence G. Marshall Sr. of the Broughton community and 
several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanch Gertrude 
Mayes Marshall, and four brothers and four sisters.
     Joseph Gawler's Sons Funeral Home of Washington was in charge of arrangements.

Joe T. Burns

     (WEDOWEE) Joe T. Burns, 74, of Wedowee died Thursday, March 31, 1994, at his 
residence after a short illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at First United Methodist Church, 
Wedowee, with Dr. Harris Hand officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
     Mr. Burns is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mollie G. Burns of Wedowee; one daughter, 
Mrs. Jane Johnson of Wedowee; three sons, Joe T. Burns Jr. of Wedowee, Eddie Burns of 
Franklin, Va., and Steve Burns of Roanoke; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; 
and two brothers, Moore Burns of Auburn and Clifford Burns of Roanoke.
     Pallbearers were Joe T. Burns Jr., Eddie Burns, Steve Burns, David Johnson, Joby 
Burns, Josh Burns, Luke Burns and Adam Burns.
     Mr. Burns was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was district 
judge for 12 years, an attorney and a graduate of University of Alabama School of Law. 
He was a member of the Bar Association, the Kiwanis Club of Wedowee, and First United 
Methodist Church of Wedowee. He was a veteran of World War II.
     Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

Sanford William Turner

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Sanford William Turner, 84, of Route 2, Roanoke, 
were Wednesday, March 30, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with 
Revs. Franklin D. Foster Sr. and Earl D. Hall officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
     Mr. Turner died Monday, March 28, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
     A Randolph County native, Mr. Turner was born Dec. 24, 1909, son of William and 
Julie Ann Hollis Turner. He was a member of Rock Mills Methodist Church and had 
worked at Wehadkee Yarn Mills. Two sons, Reed Turner and Ray Turner, preceded him 
in death.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bertha Yarbrough Turner, and a daughter, Mrs. Peggy 
Wilford, both of Roanoke; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were Timmy Boggs, Johnny Shirey, Greg Norred, Keith Cumby, Jerry 
Cumby and Harold Hall. Honorary pallbearers were his great-grandsons Michael and 
Wesley Smith.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

W. T. Weathers

     (WEDOWEE) William Thomas W. T. Weathers, 71, of Wedowee died Saturday, 
April 2, 1994, at Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, Ga., after an extended illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, April 4, at First United Methodist Church, 
Wedowee, with Dr. Harris Hand officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
     Mr. Weathers is survived by two sons, W. T. Weathers III of Marietta, Ga., and 
Forrest Phibbs of Carrollton, Ga., and two grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were Dr. W. D. Israel, Herman Landers, Bernard Austin, Tom Burnside, 
John Seegar and Bill Morrison.
     Mr. Weathers was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was a veteran 
of World War II, a Mason, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Wedowee, a member of First 
United Methodist Church of Wedowee and a land buyer for Alabama Power Company at 
his retirement.
     Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

James E. Gore, Jr.

     (WOODLAND) James E. Gore Jr., 19, of Rt. 2, Woodland, died unexpectedly 
Wednesday, March 30, 1994, at his residence.
     Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Providence Baptist Church, with 
Rev. David Daniel officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
     Mr. Gore is survived by his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. James E. Gore Sr. of Woodland, 
and five sisters, Mrs. Martha Bentley and Mrs. Carolyn Kirkland, both of Palmetto, Fla., 
Mrs. Rosa Cox of Montezuma, Ga., and Mrs. Virginia West and Mrs. Emma Perry, both 
of Woodland.
     Pallbearers were Danny Perry, Jeff Hester, Michael Gore, Kenny Gore, Thomas Cox 
and Ray Sprayberry.
     Mr. Gore was a native of Palmetto, Fla., and had lived in Randolph County for the past 
three years. He was a tile layer with Billy Rogers Contracting Company.
     Benefield Funeral Home of Wedowee was in charge of the arrangements.

William Haynes Noles

     (GRAHAM) William Haynes Noles, 86, of Route 1, Graham, died Monday, Apr. 4, 
1994, in Bowdon Area Hospital following a lengthy illness.
     He was born in Randolph County, Ala., July 11, 1907, the son of the late Newton C. 
and Maggie Hendrix Noles. Mr. Noles was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of 
Bethlehem Campground United Methodist Church, and a retired farmer.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Zettie McDaniel Noles of Graham; two sons, Clarence 
Noles of Ranburne and Jimmy Noles of Graham; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Walker of 
Ranburne; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Luther Noles 
of Bowdon, Ga., and Beason Noles of Graham.
     Funeral services will be Wednesday, Apr. 6, at 2 p.m. (Ga. time) from Campground 
United Methodist Church, with Rev. Lee Roy Shaw and Rev. Tommie Willingham 
officiating. Music will be furnished by the church choir. Pallbearers were [sic] Jeff Noles, 
Randy Noles, Jonathan Noles, Clarence Noles Jr., Terry Thompson and Danny Mitchell. 
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
     Rainwater-West Funeral Home of Bowdon, Ga., is in charge of the arrangements.

Winford Doc' Harris

     (RANBURNE) Rev. Winford Doc Harris, 69, of Route One, Ranburne, died 
Saturday, April 2, 1994, at Bowdon Area Hospital following a lengthy illness.
     He was born in Calhoun County, Ala., May 7, 1924, son of the late Calvin and Mollie 
Forbes Harris. He was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Ranburne First Baptist 
Church, and a minister for 42 years. He was a navy veteran of World War II.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Grizzle Harris, to whom he was married for over 
51 years; one son, Robin Harris of Ranburne; three daughters, Patricia Smith and Paulette 
Ward of Bowdon, Ga., and Johnnie Pollard of Ranburne; six grandchildren; one great- 
grandchild; three brothers, Grady Harris and Junior Harris of Delta and John Huel Harris 
of Lineville; two sisters, Mrs. Clyde Grogan of Cragford and Mrs. Irene Smith of 
Munford; and nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services were Monday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at Ranburne First Baptist Church, 
with Rev. Bill Dean, Rev. Chris Hall and Donald Anglin officiating. Music was by Mark 
Witham and the church choir under the direction of Clyde Gibbs.
     Pallbearers were Jerry Pinkston, Joe Neal Grogan, Arlin Anglin, Donald Anglin, Roy 
Saxon and Buren Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Lee Pollard, Junior Pollard, 
Jerry Gibbs, Wilford Pullen, Harvard McManus and Vernon Williams.
     Interment followed in Cleburne County Memory Garden, with Rev. Clonie Williams in 
charge of graveside services.
     Rainwater-West Funeral Home of Bowdon was in charge of the arrangements.

Minnie Modesta McCray

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Minnie Modesta McCray, 67, of Roanoke, formerly 
of Ashland, were Friday, April 1, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with 
Rev. Clifford DeLee officiating. Burial followed at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in 
Cragford.
     Mrs. McCray died Tuesday, March 31, at her residence in Chambers County.
     A native of Tallapoosa County, Mrs. McCray was born Feb. 3, 1927, daughter of 
Penton and Ada Fosbee Yates. She had worked at Russell Manufacturing in Ashland and 
was a member of County Line Baptist Church in Cragford. Her husband, Willis McCray, 
preceded her in death.
     Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Dianne Johnson of Roanoke and Mrs. Dot 
Smith of Cragford; a brother, Edward Yates of Lakeland, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 
six great-grandchildren.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Laura McKinnon Davis

     (FORTH [sic] WORTH, Texas) Graveside services for Laura McKinnon Davis, 82, of 
Ft. Worth, Texas, formerly of Roanoke, were Friday, April 1, 1994, from Cedarwood 
Cemetery, with Rev. Bart Bowlin officiating.
     Mrs. Davis died Tuesday, March 29, in Fort Worth.
     She was a former resident of Birmingham and of Jacksonville, Fla.
     Survivors include a son, Walter Bud Davis of Dallas, Texas, and a sister, Mrs. Dovie 
Phares of Fort Worth.

Tom L. Slagle

     (MT. OLIVE) Tom L. Slagle, 86, of the Mt. Olive community in Chambers County 
died Sunday, April 3, 1994, in George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
     Funeral services for Mr. Slagle were Tuesday, April 5, at 3 p.m. at Sanders Funeral 
Home, LaFayette, with Rev. Maynard McGinty officiating. Interment was in Rock Springs 
Baptist Church Cemetery.
     Mr. Slagle was born in Chambers County on April 27, 1907, and was a lifelong 
resident of the county. He was a retired farmer, a veteran of World War II, and a member 
of the Disabled American Veterans.
     He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edna Slagle of the Mt. Olive community, and one 
sister, Flora Slaughter of LaFayette.
     Pallbearers were James McDowell, Wayne Stephens, Jack Brown, Jack Cook, Robert 
Halsey and Billy Slagle.
     Sanders Funeral Home of LaFayette was in charge of arrangements.

William Floyd Ragle Jr.

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for William Floyd Ragle Jr., 69, of Roanoke were 
Friday, April 8, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Milton 
Booth officiating. Burial was a Randolph Memory Gardens.
     Mr. Ragle died Wednesday, April 6, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
     A native of Kansas City, Mo., Mr. Ragle was born July 14, 1924, son of William Floyd 
Ragle Sr. and Josephine Gordan Ragle. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of 
Roanoke First United Methodist Church and a member of Roanoke Country Club. Mr. 
Ragle had worked as basketball coach at Southern Union Junior College and as athletic 
director for the United Sports Academy in Saudi Arabia.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Polly Harper Ragle of Roanoke, a daughter, Mrs. Pam 
Beers of Derby, N.Y.; two sons, Bill Ragle of Roanoke and Dan Ragle of Americus, Ga.; 
two brothers, Gordan Ragle of Kansas City, Mo., and Dwight Ragle of Simsbury, Conn.; 
a step-daughter, Mrs. Nancy Pounds of Gadsden; a step-son, Tommy Huey of Roanoke; 
seven grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Elizabeth Roberts

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Frances Elizabeth Roberts, 58, of Roanoke were 
Monday, April 11, 1994, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Revs. O. J. 
Hodnett and Johnny Williams officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
     Mrs. Roberts died Saturday, April 9, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
     A Randolph County native, Mrs. Roberts was born July 2, 1935, daughter of Robert 
Lee and Chloe Cordelia Fincher Seymour. She was a member of Maplewood Baptist 
Church and had worked at Handley Mills.
     Survivors include her husband, Frank Roberts of Roanoke; two sons, Lonnie Roberts 
of Roanoke and Johnny Roberts of Senoia, Ga.; her mother, Mrs. Chloe Seymour of 
Lineville; a sister, Mrs. Nancy Jean Spears of Lineville; and four grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were James Roberts, Clayton Roberts, Gerald Brumbelow, Glen Aikens, 
Joey Lewis and Samuel Lewis.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke was in charge of arrangements.

Leon Ronald Lester

     (BIRMINGHAM) Funeral services for Leon Ronald (Ron) Lester, 48, of Birmingham 
were Friday, April 8, 1994, at 12:30 p.m. from Briarwood Presbyterian Church with burial 
in Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
     Manager of projects and construction services with Alabama Power, Mr. Lester and 
two other Alabama Power employees died Wednesday, April 6, in Talladega County as 
the result of an automobile accident.
     Formerly of Roanoke, Mr. Lester had been employed with Alabama Power for 
24 years. He was a member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church.
     He is survived by his wife, Sandra W. Lester of Birmingham; one son, Barton Todd 
Lester of Savannah, Ga.; and one daughter, Melissa V. Lester of Birmingham.
     Memorial contributions may be made to Briarwood Presbyterian Church Building 
Fund.
     Elmwood Chapel, Birmingham, was in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas H. Bishop Jr.

     (FAIRFIELD) Thomas H. Bishop Jr., 74, of Fairfield, formerly of Roanoke, died 
Tuesday, April 5, 1994.
     Mr. Bishop retired from U.S. Steel as a supervisor with 40 years of service in the 
Southern Raw Materials Division. A devoted member of Fairfield First Baptist Church for 
40 years, he was a deacon, chairman of the board of deacons, and men's Sunday school 
teacher.
     Funeral service was at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Elmwood Chapel with burial at 
Southern Heritage Cemetery, Elmwood Chapel directing.
     Survivors include his wife, Wilma Earle Bishop; sons, Brad Bishop of Indian Springs, 
Mike Bishop of Birmingham and John Bishop of Roanoke; brother Eddie Paul Bishop of 
LaGrange, Ga.; sisters, Dorothy Benefield of Valley and Kathleen Kitchens of Roanoke; 
grandchildren Leigh Anne Bishop of New York, Clay Bishop, Jennifer Bishop, Jake 
Bishop, Natalie Morrow and Sarah Bishop of Birmingham, Becky Farmer, Nance Bishop, 
Lara Bishop and Mary Bishop of Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Luke Farmer of Roanoke 
and Bo Bishop and Reid Bishop of Birmingham.
     The family suggests that those wishing to send a memorial gift choose the UAB 
Arthritis Center or the Children's Hospital.

Sallie Mae Tomlin

     (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Sallie Mae Tomlin, 90, of Roanoke will be held 
Thursday, April 14, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Randolph Memory Gardens with Rev. Bill Dean 
and Dr. Douglas Turner officiating.
     Mrs. Tomlin died Tuesday, April 12, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
     A lifelong resident of Roanoke, Mrs. Tomlin was a Georgia native, born May 15, 1903. 
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke and had worked at 
Handley Mills. Her husband, Handley Tomlin, and her daughter, Sara Beverly, preceded 
her in death.
     Survivors include a son-in-law, Medford Beverly of Anniston; three granddaughters, 
Mrs. Jane Beverly Renolds [sic?] of Sulpher, La., Mrs. Kaye Beverly Patterson of 
Talladega and Mrs. Martha Beverly Smelley of Greensboro, six great-grandchildren; 
and several nieces and nephews.
     The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday, 
April 14. In lieu of flowers, they request memorial contributions be made to First Baptist 
Church of Roanoke.

Dorothy Louise Hammond

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Dorothy Louise Hammond, 80, of Route 3, 
Roanoke will be Wednesday, April 13, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Big Springs Baptist Church, 
with Revs. Cecil Halsey and David Daniel officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining 
cemetery.
     Mrs. Hammond died Monday, April 11, at Bowdon Area Hospital in Bowdon, Ga.
     A former resident of Ephesus, Ga., Mrs. Hammond was a Heard County native, born 
July 2, 1913, daughter of James Benjamin and Jimmie Lee Pope Rollins. She was a 
member of Big Springs Baptist Church, the W.M.U., and the Big Springs Homemakers 
Club. Her husband, James Floyd Hammond, preceded her in death.
     Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Betty H. Maples of Anniston, Mrs. Patricia H. 
Cole of Augusta, Ga., and Mrs. Kay Bailey of Roanoke; two sons, Vaxter G. Hammond 
of Kingland, Ga., and Barry Hammond of Roanoke; two brothers, Raymond Rollins of 
Bowdon, Ga., and J. B. Rollins of Mableton, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and five great- 
grandchildren.
     Pallbearers will be Jeff Maples, Scott Maples, Kent Hammond, Timothy Cole, Kyle 
Bailey, Terry Maples and Jerry Rollins.
     The body will lie in state at the church for one hour, beginning at 1 p.m. the day of the 
funeral service.
     Quattlebaum Funeral Home of Roanoke is in charge of arrangements.

George Hendrix

     (LINEVILLE) Funeral services for George Hendrix, 78, of Lineville were Monday, 
April 11, 1994, at 2 p.m. at Black's Chapel Methodist Church, with Rev. Frank Rasbury, 
Rev. Gordon Taylor, and Rev. Chester Craft officiating. Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
     Mr. Hendrix died Saturday, April 9, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston. He was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, a retired upholsterer and a 
member of Black's Chapel Methodist Church.
     He is survived by his wife, Bertie Hendrix of Lineville; two sons, Marston Hendrix of 
Wedowee and Theron Hendrix of Lineville; three sisters, Kythia Hill of Lineville, Alma 
Spurlin of Oxford and Gladys Freeman of Abel; three brothers, James Hendrix of Clayton, 
Fred Hendrix of Talladega and Hugh Joe Hendrix of Delta; grandchildren Dean and 
Elizabeth Hendrix of Lineville; and great-granddaughter Ashley Hendrix of Lineville.
     Pallbearers were Thomas Hill, Steve Hendrix, Troy Spurlin, Tony Spurlin, Craig 
Spurlin and Barry Spurlin. Honorary pallbearers were other nieces and nephews.
     Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville was in charge of the arrangements.

OBITUARIES:

Earnest Jr. Cofield

     (ROANOKE) Earnest Jr. Cofield, 82, of Roanoke died Monday, April 14, 1994, at his 
residence.
     Survivors of Mr. Cofield include four daughters, Mrs. Allean Culberson of Roanoke 
and Mrs. Betty Thomas, Mrs. Annie Hinton and Mrs. Jeanette Inman of Elyria, Ohio, and 
two brothers, Earnest Cofield Jr. of Elyria, Ohio, and Willie V. Cofield of Lorain, Ohio.
     Services were Thursday, April 14, at 3 p.m. from Bethlehem Missionary Baptist 
Church, with Rev. W. H. Trammell, Rev. Allen Dean and Rev. J. D. Darden officiating. 
Interment was in the church cemetery.
     Pallbearers were John Culberson, Ricky Cofield, Gregory Culberson, Howard Cofield, 
Michael Martin and Luther Trammell. Honorary pallbearers were Danny Culberson, Leon 
Cofield, Joe Cofield and Sandy Sims.
     Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary of Roanoke.

Ima George Waugh

     (ATLANTA) Ima George Waugh, 83, of Atlanta died Thursday, April 7, 1994, at 
A. G. Rhodes Nursing Home in Atlanta.
     The funeral was conducted Saturday afternoon, April 9, at the graveside at High Pine 
Baptist Church Cemetery near Roanoke. Dr. Ernest Myers officiated.
     Mrs. Waugh was born Aug. 29, 1910, in Arab, daughter of the late Arthur and Emma 
Powell George. A former resident of LaGrange, she retired from West Georgia Medical 
Center in LaGrange and was a member of First Baptist Church of LaGrange.
     Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Rudene Keeble Farmer of Atlanta; one sister, 
Mrs. H. H. Hedrick Sr. of Albany; three grandsons, Hanson S. Farmer Jr., Stacy George 
Farmer and Jim Farmer, all of Atlanta; two great-grandchildren, Hanson S. Farmer III and 
Caroline Josie Farmer, both of Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews.
     The Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville was in charge of 
arrangements.

John Tom Bartlett

     (LAGRANGE, Ga.) John Tom Bartlett, 86, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday, April 17, 
1994, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after several months of declining 
health.
     Mr. Bartlett was born in Heard County, Ga., on August 24, 1907, son of the late 
Thomas McHuen and Mittie Stephens Bartlett. He was a retired supervisor of Dixie 
Division of West Point Pepperell Mfg. Co., LaGrange, having been employed there for 
more than 40 years. He was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church, and Union Lodge 
#28 F & AM, and served in the U.S. Army.
     Funeral services were at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, on Tuesday, April 
19, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Anthony Hovey officiating. Burial was in Shadowlawn Cemetery, 
LaGrange.
     Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ailene Dunn and Mrs. Shirley Hall of LaGrange; 
son-in-law, Tommy Wilson of LaGrange; six grandchildren, Eddie Hall, Peggy Wade, 
Tommy Wilson, John Wilson, Howard Dunn and Donna Waldrop; nine great- 
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
     Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home of LaGrange was in charge of arrangements.

Walt Wilson

     (CARROLLTON, Ga.) Walter (Walt) Wood Wilson, 80, of Carrollton, Ga., died 
Sunday, April 17, 1994, at Meadowbrook Manor of Haralson County, Bremen, Ga., after 
several months of declining health.
     Mr. Wilson was born in Glenn, Ga., on Nov. 24, 1913, son of the late Lawton Edson 
and Alma Cook Wilson. He was a retired dairy farmer and lived most of his life in Glenn. 
He had lived in Carrollton since 1989. He was a member of Glenn Baptist Church, where 
he served as deacon, superintendent of Sunday school, and a Sunday school teacher. He 
was also a member of Heard County Zoning Board and the board of Heard County 
Department of Family and Children Services. He was a U.S. Army veteran of 
World War II.
     Mr. Wilson was also a former major league baseball pitcher. He began his baseball 
career with the Callaway Cubs in 1937, where he won 15 of 18 games. He played with the 
Detroit Tigers when they won the 1945 World Series.
     Funeral services will be at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, Ga., on 
Wednesday, April 20, at 11 a.m., with Rev. A. M. Ballenger and Rev. Jay Knight 
officiating. Burial will be in Glenn Cemetery.
     Survivors include one son, Steve Wilson of Carrollton; a sister, Eleanor Parker of 
LaGrange; one granddaughter, Beth Rigsby of Carrollton; and numerous nieces, nephews, 
and cousins.
     Flowers will be accepted, or those desiring may contribute to the Glenn Baptist Church 
Building Fund, P.O. Box 10, Glenn GA 30219 in memory of Mr. Wilson.

Homer Bowen

     (NEWELL) Homer Bowen, 58, of Rt. 1, Newell, died suddenly Monday, April 11, 
1994.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at Jordan's Chapel Congregational 
Methodist Church, with Rev. Charlie Bolt officiating. Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
     Mr. Bowen is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel Bowen of Tallapoosa, Ga.; two 
daughters, Mrs. Carole Caterinicchio of Anniston and Mrs. Krasha Lambert of Heflin; 
three sons, Jeffrey Bowen and Anthony Bowen, both of Heflin, and Pete Bowen of 
Tennessee; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Green and Mrs. Johnnie Phillips, 
both of Newell, and Mrs. Belle Watts of Oxford; and two brothers, Horace Bowen of 
Heflin and Wayne Bowen of Newell.
     Mr. Bowen was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County and was a merchant.

Ethridge R. White

     (LINEVILLE) Funeral services for Ethridge R. White, 85, of Lineville were Tuesday, 
April 19, 1994, at 2 p.m. at McCollum Baptist Church, with Rev. Coy Powell and Rev. 
Cecil Halsey officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
     Mr. White died Sunday, April 17, at Baptist Montclair Hospital in Birmingham. He 
was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County, a farmer, a member of the Woodmen of 
the World and Lineville Masonic Lodge #219, F & AM. He was also a member of 
McCollum Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board and choir 
director for the past 71 years. He has served as chairman of the All-Day Singing at 
McCollum, which is the old singing in Clay County still continuing today.
     He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cordie U White of Lineville; two daughters, Bernie 
Cagle of Lineville and Vivian Sloan of Birmingham; one son, Harl White of Roanoke; 
two sisters, Bertha Worthy of Lineville and Eunice Smith of LaGrange, Ga.; seven 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were Chris Cagle, David Cagle, Roger White, Trae Wilkerson, Bill 
Strickland and David Holcomb. Honorary pallbearers were members of his Sunday school 
class.

Barbara Hallogay Brown

     (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Barbara Hallogay Brown, 12, of Franklin, Ga., died Wednesday, 
April 13, 1994, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Ga., after a brief illness.
     Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 16 at 11 a.m. at Mount Pleasant 
Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clifford Anderson officiating. Interment was in the church 
cemetery. Vocal music was rendered by Pat Lipham, accompanied at the piano by Lesley 
Lipham.
     Pallbearers were Jerry Patterson, Rusty Patterson, Randy Patterson, David Patterson, 
Rickey Brown, Terry Powell and Paul Brown.
     Barbara was a student at Franklin Elementary School and was much loved by her 
teachers and fellow classmates.
     Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Ray Brown of Franklin; her 
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clence Patterson of Franklin and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown 
of Roanoke; her great-grandfather, R. G. Bill Bradley of Roanoke; and a number of 
aunts and uncles and a host of friends.

Georgia Ann Johnson

     (ROANOKE) Georgia Ann Johnson, 74, of Roanoke died suddenly on Thursday, April 
14, 1994, at her residence.
     Funeral service was Tuesday, April 19, at 2 p.m. at Rock Mills Baptist Church, with 
Rev. R. L. Heflin officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery 
in the Broughton community.
     Mrs. Johnson was a native of Randolph County, where she spent most of her life as a 
homemaker. At an early age she joined what was formerly Hunter's Chapel A.M.E. 
Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late James Awbrey Johnson, 
in 1967.
     Survivors include six sons, Claxton Johnson of Oak Harbor, Wash., Rudolph Johnson 
of Huntsville, Tommy Johnson of Chicago, Ill., Vinson Johnson of Bellwood, Ill., and 
Edward Johnson and Sidney Johnson of Roanoke; three daughters, Mrs. Juline McClinton 
and Ms. Frances Williams of Chicago, and Mrs. Shirley Walker of Buffalo, N.Y.; one 
brother, King David Turner of Wedowee; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Rowland of Chicago and 
Mrs. Ida Bell Baker of Atlanta; a special cousin, Mrs. Ethel Worthy; 27 grandchildren and 
several great-grandchildren.

Charlie Reed Dobson

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Charlie Reed Dobson, 89, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
Apr. 17, 1994, at 1 p.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bart Bowlin 
officiating. Burial was at Midway Methodist Church cemetery in Wedowee.
     Mr. Dobson died Friday, April 15, at Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
     A Randolph County native, Mr. Dobson was born June 28, 1904, son of W. W. and 
Ludie Jackson Dobson. He was a member of Lowell United Methodist Church and had 
worked as a spinner with Handley Mills.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Cordie Virginia Brown Dobson; three sons, Clyde 
Dobson of Wadley, Gary Whaley of Lanett and Michael Whaley of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; 
10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were David Whaley, Reid Whaley, Richard Fetner Jr., Clyde Dobson Jr., 
Kyle Knight and Charles Michael Whaley.

John W. Cobb

     (ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for John W. Cobb, 69, of Rock Mills were Thursday, 
Apr. 21, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Rock Mills United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Pope 
and Rev. David Holmes officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
     Mr. Cobb died Tuesday, Apr. 19 in Savannah. Ga.
     A Randolph County native and lifelong resident of Rock Mills, Mr. Cobb was born 
Dec. 1, 1924, son of Larry Clay and Minnie Pearl Holder Cobb. He was a member of 
Rock Mills Methodist Church.
     Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Johnnie Gail Pike of Savannah, Ga.; five sisters, 
Mrs. Sue Causey of Warner Robins, Ga., Mrs. Lottie Carson of LaFayette, Mrs. Addie 
Butler of Auburn, Mrs. Lee Pounds of LaGrange, Ga., and Mrs. Betty Jo Brown of 
Opelika; two brothers, Thomas Cobb of Ahira, Ga., and James Cobb of LaGrange; 
and two grandchildren.

Towler and Gerald Sheppard.

Mary Catherine Weathers

     (WEDOWEE) Mary Catherine Weathers, 69, of Wedowee, died Tuesday, Apr. 19, 
1994, at Health South Medical Center, Birmingham.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 21, in Benefield Funeral Home Chapel, 
with Rev. John Duncan officiating. Burial was in Wedowee City Cemetery.
     Miss Weathers is survived by her mother, Mrs. Era Boyce Weathers of Wedowee and a 
number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
     Miss Weathers was a native of Randolph County. She had lived a number of years in 
Tuscaloosa and was living in Birmingham at the time of her death.

Austin Williams

     (LANETT) Austin Williams, 55, of Lanett died Friday, April 22, 1994, at his residence 
after a lengthy illness.
     Mr. Williams was born in Tallapoosa County on October 6, 1938. He was retired from 
Uniroyal in Opelika and was a Baptist.
     Survivors include his wife, Frances Williams; a daughter, Dianne Roberts of Huguley; 
two sons, Austin Lamar Williams of Valley and Jason Grant of Huguley; two sisters, 
Marion Langley of Huguley and Frances Tapley of Alexander City; three brothers, Buddy 
Williams of Huguley, Ralph Williams of Abanda and Dan Williams of Roanoke; and seven 
grandchildren.
     Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 24, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Rev. J. H. King officiated.
     The family suggests that memorials may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice in his 
memory.

     (NEWELL) Watson H. Lovvorn, 76, of Rt. 1, Newell, died Thursday, Apr. 21, 1994, 
in Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, Ga., after a short illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 24, at Pine Hill Church of Christ, with 
Bro. Jim Jones, Bro. J. L. Sparks and Bro. Hal Simpson officiating. Burial was in the 
adjoining cemetery.
     Mr. Lovvorn is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Lovvorn of Newell; four daughters, 
Delores Jean Lovvorn of Newell, Dorothy Ann Adkins of Newell, Myra Jo Kelly of 
Newell and Peggy Louise Cole of Carrollton; four sisters, Carolyn Bailey of Redding, 
Calif., Gladys Traylor of Bowdon, Ga., Dorothy Johnson of Graham and Eris Butler of 
Newell; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
     Pallbearers were Tony Adkins, Tim Cole, Jimmy Kelly, Terry Cole, Bryan Guinn and 
Kevin Jenkins.
     Mr. Lovvorn was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County. He was the son of 
the late Thomas Monroe and Susie Mae Ragsdale Lovvorn. He was a veteran of World 
War II and a member of Pine Hill Church of Christ.

Lovis Cummings

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Lovis Cummings, 76, of Route 2, Roanoke will be 
held Wednesday, April 27, 1994, at 3 p.m. from Forest Home Congregational Christian 
Church, with Revs. Johnny Williams and Billy Joe Fetner officiating. Burial will follow in 
the adjoining cemetery.
     Mr. Cummings died Monday, April 25, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
     A Randolph County native, Mr. Cummings was born Apr. 1, 1918, son of Ebb and 
Catherine Brown Cummings. He was an army veteran of World War II and had worked as 
a farmer. His wife, Effie Mae Cummings, preceded him in death.
     Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Donna Willingham of Roanoke; three sisters, 
Mrs. Cleo Young and Mrs. Willie Pearl Hornsby of Roanoke and Mrs. Ruth Brazel of 
LaGrange, Ga.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
     The body will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Grace Elizabeth Mapp

     (BOWDON, Ga.) Grace Elizabeth Mapp, 72, of Bowdon, Ga., died Thursday, April 
21, 1994, in Bowdon Area Hospital following a brief illness.
     She was born in Randolph County December 4, 1921, the daughter of the late E. B. 
and Fannie Lee Spruill Wiggins. Mrs. Mapp was a member of Bethlehem Campground 
United Methodist Church and was a retired bookkeeper for Woolworth Co., Inc. in 
Atlanta.
     She was preceded in death by her husband, Gorden Mapp, in 1967.
     Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Everlene Geter of LaGrange, Ga., nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services were Friday, April 22, at 2 p.m. (Ga. time) from Bethlehem 
Campground United Methodist Church, with Rev. W. M. Wiggins, Rev Hoyt Wiggins and 
Rev. Lee Roy Shaw officiating. Music was by the church choir. Interments was in the 
church cemetery.

     (LINEVILLE) Betty Jane Bridges Dennison, 55, of Rt. 1, Lineville, died Friday, April 
22, 1994, in East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika, after a short illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 24, at Mt. Zion Christian Church, with 
Rev. Chris Bowen officiating. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
     Mrs. Dennison is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Donna E. Miles, and son-in-law, 
James Miles; grandchildren Tyson Sexton, Tony Miles, Christy Miles and Steven Miles; 
two sisters, Mrs. Debby Rodgers of Tallassee and Mrs. Norma Cole of Wedowee; and 
one brother, James T. Bridges of Marietta, Ga.
     Pallbearers were Grover Whaley, Billy Hill, Billy Fred Boyd, H. S. Whaley, Grover 
Whaley and Paul Kelly.
     Mrs. Dennison was a native of Randolph County. She had lived in Hapeville, Ga., for a 
number of years and had lived in Randolph County for the past 11 months. She was a 
member of Living Faith Tabernacle, Hapeville.

     (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Latria Goode, 75, of County Road 87, Roanoke, 
who died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 19, 1994, at her residence in Roanoke, were 
Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m. from Rising Grove Baptist Church, LaGrange, Ga., with 
Rev. G. D. Adams, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Wehadkee Missionary Baptist Church 
Cemetery, Roanoke.
     Mrs. Goode is survived by two sons, Joe Lewis Goode of Roanoke and Leroy Goode 
of Jacksonville, Fla.; two step-sons, Lucius Goode of Atlanta, Ga., and Goody Goode of 
Tampa, Fla.; three daughters, Ms. Hazel Cameron of Dayton, Oh., Mrs. Genell Baker of 
Roanoke and Mrs. Johnnie Harris of Dayton, Oh.; three step-daughters, Mrs. May Dixon 
and Mrs. Rebecca Hudson of LaGrange and Mrs. Christine Heath of Anniston; one sister, 
Mrs. Maria Grant of LaGrange; and 40 grandchildren, 61, great-grandchildren and 
14 great-great-grandchildren.

John A. Huddleston

     (WOODLAND) Funeral services for John A. Huddleston, 90, of Woodland, Route 1, 
were Friday, April 22, 1994, at 2 p.m. from Gray Hill Church of God, with Rev. O. V. 
Sewell officiating. Burial was at the adjoining cemetery.
     Mr. Huddleston died Wednesday, Apr. 20, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
     A native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Aug. 8, 1903, son of 
Benjamin Franklin and Lou Alice Jeter Huddleston. He had worked as a farmer. His wife, 
Ida Josephine Huddleston, preceded him in death.
     Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Margie L. Beall of Woodland and Mrs. Hazel 
Morgan of Roanoke; two sons, Kermit Huddleston of Ranburne and Mack Huddleston of 
Baton Rouge, La.; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Dalrymple and Mrs. Ida Smith of Roanoke 
and Mrs. Nettie Hester of Wedowee; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 
six great-great-grandchildren.
     Pallbearers were Steve Huddleston, Daryl Huddleston, Christopher Huddleston, Jerry 
Bell, Tony Tiemersma and Ricky Tiemersma.

Arthur Matthew Jordan

     (WEDOWEE) Arthur Matthew Jordan, of Rt. 1, Wedowee, died Saturday, April 23, 
1994, in the VA Hospital, Tuskegee, after an extended illness.
     Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at Valley Grove Primitive Baptist 
Church, with Rev. Jimmy C. Yarbrough officiating.
     Mr. Jordan is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maudene Jordan of Wedowee; three 
daughters, Mrs. Melba Tingle of Birmingham, Mrs. Melissa Brown of Ashland, and Miss 
Mary Jordan of Wedowee; two sons, Richard Jordan and Felix Jordan of Birmingham; 
18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Willie Thompson of 
Lineville and Mrs. Ruby Bennett of Sanford, Fla.
     Mr. Jordan was a native of Randolph County. He had lived in Montgomery for a 
number of years and had lived in Randolph County for the past 26 years. He was a veteran 
of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a carpenter by trade.

Aubrey A. Anglin

     (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Aubrey A. Anglin, 82, of LaGrange died Sunday, Apr. 24, 1994 in 
Bowdon, Ga., following a lengthy illness.
     Mr. Anglin was born Oct. 16, 1911, in the Potash community of Randolph County, 
Ala. He was the son of the late Mrs. and Mrs. William C. Anglin and was a graduate of 
Handley High School in Roanoke. He had made his home in LaGrange since 1941 and 
retired from the Elm City plant of Milliken & Co. with 35 years of service.
     Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lena Mae Anglin of LaGrange; two daughters, Mrs. 
John (Geraldine) Dolan of Fairfield, Calif., and Mrs. Sammie (Aublene) Gross of Bowdon, 
Ga.; three grandchildren, Mrs. Teresa L. Bauer of Healdsburg, Calif., Tim T. Treadwell of 
St. Cloud, Minn., and Kim Gross of Bowdon; and nieces and nephews.
     The funeral will be Wednesday, Apr. 27, at 2 p.m. at Unity Baptist Church with Rev. 
Bobby Robinson and Rev. Cecil Halsey officiating. Interment will follow in Shadowlawn 
Cemetery in LaGrange.
     Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or 
the Leukemia Fund in memory of Mr. Anglin.
     The body of Mr. Anglin will lie in state at the church an hour before the service.
     Arrangements are by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in LaGrange.

Jim Elliott

     (LAKE CHARLES, La.) Funeral services for Jim (Hippo) Elliott, 49, of Lake Charles 
will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, 1994, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. 
The Rev. Charley Willis will officiate. Burial will be in Consolata Cemetery under the 
direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
     Mr. Elliott was a native of Wadley, Ala., and had lived in Lake Charles for the past 32 
years. He had attended Auburn University and McNeese and at one time worked for the 
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Department. Mr. Elliott was employed at Cities Service for 26 
years and at the time of his death was supervisor of the Cit-Com Warehouse. He was a 
member of the board of both the Lake Charles Oil and Petroleum Golf Tournament and 
the CITGO Muscular Dystrophy Association.
     Survivors include his wife, Julie Elliott of Lake Charles; two daughters, Kelly E. 
Boudoin and Katie Elliott of Lake Charles; one sister, Brenda Ingalls of Lake Charles; 
his mother, Dorothy Elliott of Wadley; and one granddaughter.
     The family requested that memorial donations be made to the American Heart 
Association or the Baptist Children's Home.
