OBITUARIES:

Eula Maude McCain Nelson

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Eula Maude McCain Nelson, 86, of Woodland 
were at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at Benefield Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Chris 
Mitchell officiating.  Burial was at Levens Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Nelson died Sunday, Sept. 3, at Wedowee Hospital following an extended illness.
   A native of Randolph County, she was born Sept. 16, 1913, daughter of Walt and Annie 
Calhoun McCain.  She had been self-employed in retail sales and was a member of Levens 
Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Larkin Hermit Nelson, a son, 
Doyle Nelson, and a grandson, Chris Whaley.
   Survivors include three daughters, Maudine Foster and Annie Lee Whaley of Woodland 
and Peggy Lombardo of Huntsville; a son, Rudy Nelson of Childersburg; 11 grand- children, 
including two special granddaughters, Vicki Sikes and Gina Mercer; 13 great-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Eva Onyce Daniel

   (WOODLAND) Funeral Services for Eva Onyce Daniel, 87, of Woodland will be at 2 
p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. Cecil Halsey 
and David Daniel officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Daniel died Monday, Sept. 4, at Brian Center Nursing Home in LaGrange, Ga., 
following an extended illness.
   A native of Randolph County, she was born May 26, 1913, daughter of James Walker 
and Eva Alma Fincher McDow.  She was a retired teacher from the Randolph County 
School System, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of Providence 
Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William Karo Daniel.
   Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Vaughn of Carrollton, Ga.; two sisters, Ila 
Spradlin and Ruby Holcomb of Woodland; and six grandchildren.
   Mrs. Daniel will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Chad Whitmore, Morgan Cantrell, Gary Spradlin, Scott Garner, 
Phillip Dennis and Jesse Elders.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Annie O. Owensby

   (ROCK MILLS) Annie O. Owensby, 49, of Rock Mills died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at 
UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
   Ms. Owensby was a member of Mount Carrie Baptist Church, Franklin, Ga.
   Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Katheryn Owensby of Rock Mills; two sisters, Annie 
R. Culberson and Brenda Truitt of Franklin; four nieces, six nephews, and a large number 
of other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie William 
Owensby; two sisters and two brothers.
   Services for Ms. Owensby were Saturday, Sept. 2, at 2:30 p.m. EDT at Mount Carrie 
Baptist Church, with the Rev. Willie T. Edmondson officiating.  Interment was in Stateline 
Cemetery in Glenn, Ga.
   Arrangements were by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Dinia S. Wood

   (ROME, Ga.) Dinia S. Wood of Rome, Ga., died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at a local 
health care center following an extended illness.
   Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. EDT at Eastview Cemetery, Rome, 
with the Rev. Kenneth O. Brown and other ministers officiating.
   Mrs. Wood was born in Roanoke, Ala., daughter of the late Ida and Ambus "Bad" Stitt.
   She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Jassie Smedley and Brennetta 
Wood; and five brothers, Ike, Jesse, Clem, Willis and Tom Emory Stitt.  Mrs. Wood is 
survived by her husband, Sam Wood; one sister, Odie S. Magby, and one brother, John L. 
Stitt, both of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
   Arrangements are by Wright Memorial Mortuary Inc., Rome.

William 'Bill' Alls

   (HEFLIN) William "Bill" Alls, 84, of Heflin died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at Wedowee 
Hospital in Wedowee.
   Mr. Alls was a member of Oak Grove AME Church in Newell.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Margaret Alls of Heflin, and a host of nephews, nieces 
and other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by two sisters and three 
brothers.
   Services for Mr. Alls will be Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove AME Church, 
with the Rev. Raymond Angel officiating.  The Rev. Herman Massingale is pastor.  
Interment will be in the Oak Grove AME Church Cemetery.
   Arrangements are by Silmon Mortuary, Roanoke.

Howard Moore

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Howard Moore, 77, of Wedowee were Sunday, Sept. 3, 
2000, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Rev. S. T. Janney, the Rev. Larry 
Cosper and the Rev. Billy East officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Moore died Saturday, Sept. 2, at his residence following an extended illness.
   Mr. Moore was a native of Randolph County, born Aug. 28, 1923, son of Hamilton K. 
and Pearlie John Driver Moore.  He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and 
was a self-employed mechanic, employed for a number of years with Fincher Motor 
Company of Wedowee and Dunn Chevrolet of Roanoke.  He was preceded in death by his 
parents and a brother, John Will Moore.
   Mr. Moore is survived by his wife, Edna Ruth Moore of Wedowee; two daughters, 
Brenda Holloway and Diane Wortham of Wedowee; two sons, Charlie Moore of Opelika 
and James Moore of Wedowee; a sister Omie Smith of Roanoke; nine grandchildren and 
eight great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Wyatt Wright III, Keith Mulder, Billy Adamson, Sidney Moore, Allen 
Taylor, Barry Nelson, Kenneth Adamson, Mike Cumbee and Donnie Wortham.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Faye Henry Roberts

   (CORNELIA) Faye Henry Roberts, 86, of Cornelia, Ga., died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in 
Habersham Medical Center, Demorest, Ga.
   She is survived by two sons, William F. Roberts of Fayetteville, Ga., and James A. 
Roberts of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and three daughters, JoAnne Roberts of Cornelia, Beth 
Maney of Demorest and Peggy Seabolt of Roanoke.
   Services will be Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Cornelia, with 
Dr. Logan Smith officiating.  Burial will be in the Yonah Memorial Gardens, Demorest.
   Arrangements are by Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Cornelia.

OBITUARIES:

Ellis H. 'Buck' Jenkins

   (ROANOKE) Ellis H. "Buck" Jenkins, 80, of Roanoke, formerly of Valley, died 
Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 3 p.m. EDT 
on Saturday, Sept. 9, with burial in Milltown Cemetery.  The Rev. Bobby Kirby officiated.
   Mr. Jenkins was born in Chambers County on Nov. 3, 1919, son of the late Cleo Hall 
Jenkins and Benjamin Hampton Jenkins.  He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. 
Army.  He was the first chief of police in Kennesaw, Ga., and has also formerly worked 
for West Point Pepperell.  For 25 years, he owned and operated the Rica Motel in Valley.
   Surviving are his wife, Sybil King Jenkins; three daughters, Shonnia Harless of Beulah, 
Katrinia J. Canada of Elizabethtown, N.J., and Linda J. Hinkle of Lanett; a stepson, James 
Pridgen of Valley; a half-sister, Gloria Martin of Friendswood, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 
three step-grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
   Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
   Arrangements were by Johnson-Brown Service Funeral Home, Valley.

William James Pike

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) William James Pike, 74, of Franklin, Ga., died Thursday, Sept. 7, 
2000, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Ga., after several years of declining 
health.
   Mr. Pike was born in Randolph County on Nov. 20, 1925, to the late Andrew Jackson 
Pike and Vesta Cleo Lipham Pike.  He was a machine operator for LaGrange Molded 
Products and retired from the company after many years of loyal service.  He was a 
faithful member of Bethel Christian Church.  Mr. Pike served his country in the U.S. Army 
during World War II, in the European Theater.
   Services were Sunday, Sept. 10, at 3 p.m. at Bethel Christian Church, with the Revs. 
Kenneth Johnson and Stanley Yarbrough officiating.  Interment was in the church 
cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Marie Harry Pike of Franklin; two daughters, Yvonne 
Francis and Debbie Pike of Franklin; one son, John Pike of Millington, Tenn.; three 
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Julia Koon of Douglasville, Ga., and 
Joyce Bowman of Liberty, N.C.
   Arrangements were by Tom Stutts & Son Funeral Home, Franklin.

Verna E. Thompson

   (WOODLAND) Services for Verna E. Thompson, 90, of Woodland were at 3 p.m. 
Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Providence Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Daniel and the 
Rev. Cal Ledbetter officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Thompson died Friday, Sept. 8, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   Mrs. Thompson was born in Randolph County on Nov. 26, 1909, daughter of Charlie F. 
Capehart and Ella Lovvorn Capehart.  She was a homemaker and a member of Providence 
Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Shellie Monroe Thompson; 
and a son, Loyce S. Thompson; and a grandchild.
   Survivors include five daughters, Betty Jameson of Toccoa, Ga., Grace Dunaway Stone 
of Opelika, Imogene Greene of Wedowee, Shirley McManus of Woodland and Carol 
Gilreath of Jackson, Ga.; three sons, Maxie Thompson of Opelika, Joe Thompson of 
Bowdon, Ga., and Sammy Thompson of Hobbs, N.M.; one sister, Ruth Lee of Wedowee; 
30 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
   Grandsons served as pallbearers.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Leah Esma Johnson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Leah Esma Johnson, 79, of Roanoke were Monday, Sept. 11, 
2000, at 3 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Scott Hannah officiating.  
Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Johnson died Saturday, Sept. 9, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Johnson was born May 1, 1921, daughter of Lunnie H. 
and Jane Green Benefield.  She moved to Atlanta in 1946, lived in East Point, Ga., from 
1961 to 1978; and returned to Randolph County 23 years ago.  She worked as a secretary 
at Ft. McPherson and had retired after 23 years.  Mrs. Johnson was a member of Big 
Springs Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, Robert Martin Johnson of Roanoke; one son, Stephen 
Martin Johnson of Roanoke; and two granddaughters.
   Pallbearers were Greg Benefield, Cal Green, Chad Green, Don Benefield, Hugh 
Benefield, Mike Benefield and David Johnson.  Members of the Big Springs Baptist Men's 
Adult Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Big Springs Baptist Church 
Building Fund, c/o Ralph Davis, treasurer.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Frank Sikes

   (WEDOWEE) Graveside services for Frank Sikes, 80, of Wedowee, will be Wednesday, 
Sept. 13, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Ava Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. S. T. Janney 
officiating.
   Mr. Sikes died Monday, Sept. 11, at his daughter's home in Roanoke.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Sikes was born Nov. 16, 1919, son of Edgar and Myrtle 
Bolt Sikes.  He was a World War II Air Force veteran and a self-employed mechanic.  He 
was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille McCain Sikes.
   Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Sikes Hall of Roanoke; one granddaughter; one 
grandson; one great-grandson; three sisters, Aline Smith of LaFayette, Katherine 
Parkerson of LaGrange, Ga., and Montana Brooks of Valley; and four brothers, Coleman 
Sikes of Opelika, Carey Sikes of Anniston, Stanley Sikes of Wedowee and Guy Sikes of 
Oxford.
   Pallbearers will be James Sikes, Kenneth Smith, Rodney Hall, Greg Sikes, Mike McCain 
and Rob Williams.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Kathryn Knight Childers

   (UNION HILL) Kathryn Knight Childers, 76, of Union Hill died Monday, Sept. 11, 
2000, at her residence.
   Services will be at Pleasant Grove Christian Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 
with interment in the church cemetery.  The Rev. Barry Brooks and the Rev. Floyd 
Carmack will officiate.
   Survivors include two sisters, Mary Austin of Union Hill and Pearline Burton of Camp 
Hill; and one brother, Leroy Knight of Lanett.
   Mrs. Childers was a native of Chambers County, born Oct. 14, 1923.  She was a retired 
school teacher, having taught 39 years at Milltown School and two years at Shawmut.  
She was a member of the Chambers County Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa 
Gamma, American Legion Auxiliary, Inter Se Club of Wadley, Chambers County Farmers 
Federation, Union Hill Community Club, Union Hill Homemakers Club and Pleasant 
Grove Christian Church.
   Pallbearers will be James Burton, Wilson Burton, Mark Gillenwaters, Brandon Sanders, 
Scott Sparks, Ken Harmon, Charles Austin and Woody Harmon.
   Arrangements are by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Louis E. Seawright Jr.

   (VALLEY) Louis E. Seawright Jr., 69, of Valley died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at 
George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   A memorial service will be held in Cocoa, Fla., at a later date.
   Survivors include his wife, Myra Jean Seawright of Valley; six daughters, Ruby Jean 
Aikens, Janet Rose Norred and Lucy Gail Cozart of Roanoke, Patricia Ann Cotton of 
Opelika, and Myra Beth Poe and Bonnie Faye Williams of Valley; two sisters, Ruth 
Podhola of Round Lake, Ill., and Fannie Sheats of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and 
four great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Seawright was born in Brevard County, Fla., on Aug. 19, 1931.  He was retired 
from the U.S. Army after 24 1/2 years of active service.  Medals he received are the 
Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, one overseas bar, Army 
Commendation Medal, and Good Conduct Medal with B2 Clasps.
   Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association or to the Diabetes 
Association.

   (ROANOKE) Johnnie Lou Pinkard, 83, of Roanoke died Wednesday Sept. 6, 2000, at 
Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
   Services were at Rehope Baptist Church, LaFayette, on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. with 
the Rev. H. L. Jones and the Rev. L. J. Wright officiating.  Interment was in Mt. Bethel 
United Methodist Church Cemetery, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Pinkard is survived by seven daughters, Annie Robinson of Warren, Ohio, 
Margaret Hester of Atlanta, Ga., and Roxie Joiner, Georgiann Phillips, Lela Brady, Juanita 
Wright and Patsy Kirk, all of Roanoke; three sons, Thomas Pinkard of Jacksonville, Fla., 
and Fletcher Pinkard and Robert R. Pinkard, both of Roanoke; one sister, Lula C. Cox of 
Youngstown, Ohio; one brother, Clinton Poole of Roanoke; an uncle; 22 grandchildren; 
11 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
   Mrs. Pinkard was a member of Rehope Baptist Church, LaFayette.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Loette Green Adcock, 84, of Wedowee were Monday, Sept. 
11, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Green's Chapel Methodist Church, with Sarah Corson and the Rev. 
Clois Johnson officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Adcock died Sunday, Sept. 10, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong Wedowee resident, Mrs. Adcock was born April 9, 1916, daughter of Olin F. 
and Willie Lauren Wilson Benefield.  She was a homemaker and a member of Green's 
Chapel.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Green; husband, Robert 
Adcock; one sister, Aileen Thornton; one brother, Wilson Benefield; and her parents.
   Survivors include Keever Benefield of Wedowee and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Nephews served as pallbearers.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Green's Chapel Methodist 
Church.

Una Mae Harmon

   (ROANOKE) Services for Una Mae Harmon, 89, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Sept. 12, 
2000, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Doug Turner officiating.  Burial 
was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Harmon died Monday, Sept. 11, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Harmon was born Nov. 23, 1910, daughter of Joseph 
and Docia Burns Washington.  She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist 
Church, Roanoke.
   Survivors include one daughter Sara Jane Tackett of Lincoln; two sisters, Berma 
Abernathy of Roanoke and Idel Parker of Woodland; two grandchildren and two 
great-grandchildren.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to First Baptist Church, 827 
Main St., Roanoke, AL 36274.

Millierea Brown

   (VALLEY) Millierea Brown, 76, of Valley died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at George H. 
Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Surviving are a daughter, Reba Sanders of Valley; a son, Danny Brown of Milledgeville, 
Ga.; two grandsons; two sisters, Willie Jo Newton of Huguley and Bernice Fetner of 
Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
   Services will be at West Side Baptist Church, Lanett, at 2 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, 
Sept. 13.  Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. EDT at Wedowee City Cemetery, 
Wedowee.  The Rev. Roger Adcock and the Rev. Billy Short will officiate.
   Mrs. Brown was born in Randolph County on May 9, 1924, daughter of the late Reva 
Jane Young Nix and James Melton Nix.  She had formerly been employed with West Point 
Pepperell's Lanett Bleachry and Dye Works, where she had 18 years of service.  She was 
an active member of her church and a loving mother and grandmother.  She was a member 
of West Side Baptist Church, Lanett.
   Arrangements are by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Robert Cleveland Daniel

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for Robert Cleveland Daniel, 85, of Newell were Friday, 
Sept. 15, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Smyrna Baptist Church, with the Revs. Cal Ledbetter and 
Brian Smith officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Daniel died Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Lineville Nursing Home.
   A native and lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Daniel was born July 8, 1915, son 
of George F. and Rior Jane Gore and a member of Smyrna Baptist Church.  He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Lou Daniel.
   Survivors include two sons, George Daniel of Ranburne and Barry Daniel of Newell; 
one sister, Ethel Mooney of Newell; one brother, Emmett O. Daniel of Anniston; four 
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

John Willie Thompson

   (WADLEY) John Willie Thompson, 62, of Wadley died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at his 
residence.
   Graveside services were Thursday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. at Leander Baptist Church 
Cemetery, Daviston, with the Rev. Charlie H. Magby officiating.
   Survivors include a daughter, Linda Gail Thompson of Sylacauga; a special friend, Lynn 
Walker of Auburn; and an aunt, Maude Floyd of Daviston.  He was preceded in death by 
his parents, Willie and Mary Magaline Thompson.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Lottie Maude Stodgill Stewart

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Lottie Maude Stodgill Stewart, 92, of Woodland 
were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Oak Grove Church of Christ, with Brother 
Dwight Thomas officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.
   Mrs. Stewart died Thursday, Sept. 14, at Wedowee Hospital following an extended 
illness.
   Mrs. Stewart was a native of Butts County, Ga., born June 20, 1908, daughter of James 
Madison Stodgill and Emily Flora Hardy Stodgill.  She was a member of Oak Grove 
Church of Christ.
   Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Zilmer Stewart Sr.; two sons, 
John Horace Stewart and Allen Zelma Stewart Jr., and two grandsons.
   Mrs. Stewart is survived by four daughters, Marvolene Wilson and Jo Landers of 
Wedowee, Ruth Spradlin of Heflin and Burma Bailey of Athens; one son, Bobby Stewart 
of Wedowee; one sister, Ruby Savage of Rome, Ga.; 13 grandchildren, 
19 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
   The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer 
Society.

Herman M. Cooper

   (CONYERS, Ga.) Herman M. Cooper, 91, of Conyers, Ga., formerly of Valley, Ala., 
died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at his son's home in Conyers.
   Mr. Cooper was born March 6, 1909, son of the late Emma Ophelia Kitchens Cooper 
and the late John Frank Cooper.  He retired from West Point Pepperell's Fairfax Mill in 
1973 and had been a resident of Conyers since 1998.  He suffered from Alzheimer's and 
Parkinson's diseases, and his health had declined rapidly in recent weeks.  Mr. Cooper was 
a member of Fairfax First Baptist Church for 55 years, Woodman of the World, Kiwanis 
Club, and the Valley Men's Rose Club.
   Survivors include his wife, Merle Wheeler Cooper; a son, Richard W. Cooper of 
Conyers; and a brother, Earl Cooper of Roanoke; two grandchildren; 
six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
   Services will be at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. 
EDT on Friday, Sept. 22, with burial in Fairfax Cemetery.  The Rev. Mike Brooks and the 
Rev. Mike Miller will officiate.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's or Parkinson's 
Disease Foundations in his memory.  The family will receive friends Thursday evening 
from 7 until 9 p.m. EDT at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.

Charlie Ford Nolen

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Services for Charlie Ford Nolen, 57, of LaGrange, Ga., will be at 2 
p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, Roanoke, with the Rev. 
Gary Baugh officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Wedowee.
   Mr. Nolen died Monday, Sept. 18, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   He was born in Randolph County on July 28, 1943, son of J. B. and Lucy Cummings 
Nolen.  He had been self-employed as a plumber and was a Baptist.
   Survivors include two sons, Charlie James Nolen of Hogansville, Ga., and Chuck Nolen 
of Carrollton, Ga.; a sister, Margaret Brewer of LaGrange; a brother, James Nolen of 
Nashville; and five grandchildren.
   Pallbearers will be Bruce Brewer, John David Brewer, James Edward Brewer, Tim 
Laster, John Earl Brewer and Ruben Parmer.

George Edward Hull

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for George Edward Hull, 88, of Wedowee were 
Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. 
Byron Waldrop and the Rev. Donald Spradlin officiating.  Burial was in Mt. Pleasant 
Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Hull died Sunday, Sept. 17, at his residence.
   Mr. Hull was a native of Randolph County, born Feb. 17, 1912, son of Levi Hull and 
Elizabeth Smith Hull.  He was a farmer and timber producer.  He was preceded in death 
by his wife, Mattie Horton Hull,; two sons, L. C. Hull and Eddie B. Hull; and a daughter, 
Jean Parker.  Mr. Hull was of the Baptist faith.
   Mr. Hull is survived by a grandson, several nieces and nephews, and his primary care 
giver, James Moncus.
   Pallbearers were Clarence Nix, Harold Lindsey, Walt Lindsey, Jim Moncus, Frank 
Mitchell and Hubert Mitchell.

Loretta Voncile Cummings

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Loretta Voncile Cummings, 63, of Roanoke will be at 
2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Gary 
Baugh, Jamie Taylor and Cecil Halsey officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant 
Baptist Church Cemetery in Wedowee.
   Mrs. Cummings died Tuesday, Sept. 19, at her residence.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born in Troup County, Ga., on Jan. 5, 
1937, daughter of James Barner and Artie Lou Brown Fincher.  She owned and operated 
Cummings Grocery and was a member of Handley Avenue Church of God.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Gene Cummings.
   Survivors include a daughter, Stacey Cummings Murphy of Roanoke; two sons, David 
Cummings and Steve Cummings of Roanoke; four sisters, Vernette Smith, Barbara 
Blackmon and Linda Thomas of Roanoke and Norma Hodge of Five Points; a brother, 
Donnie Fincher of Opelika; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral Home from 4 until 9 p.m. 
Wednesday, Sept. 20.
   Pallbearers will be Jeremy Cummings, Kevin Cummings, Russ Cummings, Eric

Wyatt Harlan Jackson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Dr. Wyatt Harlan Jackson, 46, of Roanoke will be at 11 a.m. 
Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at First United Methodist Church in Roanoke, with the Rev. 
Tex Ergle and Dr. Harris Hand officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory 
Gardens.
   Dr. Jackson died Monday, Sept. 25, at his residence following an extended illness.
   A resident of Roanoke since 1982, he was born in Montgomery on Oct. 12, 1953, and 
was raised in Oxford.  He was the son of Harlan Baxter and Mabel Lorene Jackson.  He 
was employed in the practice of dentistry and was a graduate of Jacksonville State 
University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry.  He was a 
member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and a 
former member of the Kiwanis Club.  He was a member of First United Methodist Church 
of Roanoke, where he served as chairman of the Building Committee, and was a member 
of the Handbell Choir.  He was preceded in death by his father Harlan Baxter Jackson.
   Survivors include his wife, Anya Jackson of Roanoke; three children, Laura Jackson, 
Mary Jackson and Marc Jackson of Roanoke; his mother Mabel Lorene Jackson of 
Oxford; and a sister, Lorraine J. Busby of Oxford.
   Dr. Jackson will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 10 a.m. on 
Wednesday.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Family Life 
Center Fund at First Methodist Church, P.O. Box 40, Roanoke, AL 36274.
   Pallbears will be David Denton, Dr. Kurry Wyatt, Dennis Wallace, Hallman Bradshaw,

   The infant died Saturday, Sept. 25, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in

grandparents, Dennis and Paralee Brown of Pensacola, Fla., and Jimmy and Julia Jernigan 
of Montgomery; great-grandmothers, Alice Duke of Wedowee and Jean Jernigan of

Myrtle Allen Beverly

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mrs. Myrtle Allen Beverly, 86, of Roanoke were at 3 p.m. 
Friday, Sept. 22, 2000 at White's Chapel Methodist Church, with the Revs. Don Quick 
and Harold Bonner officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Beverly died Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on June 1, 1914, daughter of Church Hill and Dura 
Lavonia Clark Allen.  She was employed at Palm Beach Company and was a member of 
the American Legion Auxiliary, the Randolph County Extension Homemakers and White's 
Chapel Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Charlie 
Beverly.
   Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette Beverly Pike of Dallas, GA; two sons, James 
Edward Beverly of Anniston and Richard Donald Beverly of Smiths Station; a sister, Lera 
Allen Kirby of Roanoke; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Ricky Pike, Alan Pike, David Beverly, Eddard Beverly, Kenneth 
Beverly and Payton Zeigler.

Robert L. Smith

   (WEDOWEE) The Rev. Robert L. Smith, 76, of Wedowee died Monday, Sept. 25, 
2000, at his home.
   Services will be Thursday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist 
Church, Woodland Drive, Wedowee, with the Revs. O'Neil Ridgeway and Joseph 
Hepburn officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Rev. Smith was a retired minister, having served in the North Alabama Conference of 
the United Methodist Church from 1954 to 1989.  He was appointed to the Wedowee 
Circuit in 1963, and thereafter made his home in Randolph County.  He was the son of the 
late Benjamin and Rosa Owens Smith.  A native of Overton in Jefferson County, he was 
preceded in death by his wife, Eppie Dovine Smith in March of 1999.  Rev. Smith was an 
honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Transportation 
Corps during World War II.  He attended Warrior High School in Warrior and studied 
theology at Emory School of Theological Studies for four years.
   Survivors include seven daughters, Mrs. Earnestine Parker of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mrs. 
Willie Mae Anthony, Ms. Robbia Smith, Ms. Eva Laney and Mrs. Brenda Hardnett of 
Wedowee, Ms. Evelyn Starks of Bowdon, Ga., and Mrs. Rosetta Heard of Kellyton, Ala; 
one son, Robert Earl Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Herman Smith of Birmingham; 
32 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in law.
   Visitation will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Clark Memorial Funeral 
Service.  The body will be in state at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Gloria Rowe Wright

   (FIVE POINTS) Services for Gloria Rowe Writht, 54, of Five Points, formerly of 
Roanoke, were Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the 
Revs. Phillip Johnson and Johnny Williams officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Wright died Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Wright was born Oct. 16, 1945, daughter of Johnny 
Jackson and Elsie Scott Rowe.  She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Baptist 
Church.  Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Virginia Kelly.
   Survivors include her husband, Robert Lee Wright Jr. of Five Points; five sisters, Nancy 
Smith, Wanda Barber and Donna Bozeman of Roanoke, and Mary Ann Hodges and Jane 
Tillis of Wadley; two brothers, Jackson Rowe and Wylie Rowe of Roanoke; and several 
nieces and nephews.
   Nephews served as pallbearers.

Lila Jo Craft

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lila Jo Craft, 83, of Roanoke were Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at 
11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Florence officiating.  Burial 
was at Rock Springs Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Craft died at her home on Wednesday, Sept. 20.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Craft was born Oct. 19, 1916, daughter of Romalas 
and Dent Longshore Carpenter.  She had resided in Wedowee most of her life and was a 
member of Rock Springs Christian Church.  Mrs. Craft was a registered nurse who had 
worked at LaFayette Nursing Home and was a former director of nurses a Randolph 
County Hospital.
   Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Frances Tarver of Scottsmoor, Fla.; four 
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Vina Tarver of Wedowee; two 
step-children, Bobbie Lerequet of LaFayette and Jimmy Craft of Mexico; three 
step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Wayne Tarver, Michael Tarver, Keith Tarver, Eric Tarver, James 
Tarver and Robert Ford.

A. G. McCollough

   (ROANOKE) Services for A. G. McCollough, 85, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Sept. 26, 
2000, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Tim Teague and Harold 
Bonner officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. McCollough died Sunday, Sept. 24, at East Alabama Medical Center.
   A Chambers County native, Mr. McCollough was born Nov. 9, 1914, son of David and 
Beulah Carpenter McCollough.  He lived in Roanoke most of his life, spent 23 years in 
Alexander City and returned to Roanoke in 1980.  He was a World War II veteran, 
serving in Germany and the Philippines.  Mr. McCollough was a founding member of First 
Church of God.  He had worked as an auto methanic with the Alabama State Highway 
Department.
   Survivors include his wife, Loretta Steen McCollough of Roanoke; a nephew raised as a 
son, Joseph "Joey" Valenzuela of Roanoke; one sister, Rena Whitley of Roanoke; one 
brother, Sam McCollough of Colleyville, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were David Whitley, Ralph Gooden, Ronnie Harper, Sonny Steen, Donald 
Huey, Craig Huey and Bobby Wylie.  Honorary pallbearers were Kennneth Hamm, Wilson 
Herren, Harris Kitchens, Clarence Young and Lavelle Goodwin.

Ellie Lucy Spradlin

   (GRAHAM)  Ellie Lucy Spradlin, 89, of Graham, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at 
Traylor Nursing Home, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Spradlin was born Aug. 15, 1911, in Randolph County, daughter of the late Jim 
and Missouri Hill Reaves.  She was a homemaker and a member of Providence Baptist 
Church, Woodland.  She was the wife of the late B. Elton "Booty" Spradlin.
   Survivors include three daughters, Judy Green of Woodland, Marie Holstien of Conyers, 
Ga., and Josephine Robinson of Bowdon, Ga.; a brother, R. C. Reaves of LaFayette; two 
sisters, Dollie Reaves of Pine Hill and Ollie Spradlin of LaGrange, Ga.; 11 grandchildren 
and 13 great-grandchildren.
   Services were at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Rainwater-West Funeral Home 
Chapel in Bowdon, with the Rev. David Daniel officiating.  Burial was in Providence 
Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Pallbearers were Steven Lovvorn, Jay Lovvorn, Jay Herren, Chris Spradlin, Jim Spradlin 
and Wendell Ford.

Catherine Green Morgan

   (ROANOKE) Services for Catherine Green Morgan, 75, of Roanoke were Saturday, 
Sept. 23, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Bear Creek United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Warren 
Wilder and the Rev. Amy Raser officiating.  Burial followed in the adjoining church 
cemetery.
   Mrs. Morgan died Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Northeast Alabama Regional Medical 
Center in Anniston.
   Mrs. Morgan was a native of Randolph County, born Nov. 26, 1924, the daughter of 
Grady and Zona Sears Green.  She was retired as a computer operator with the 
Department of the Navy and a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Van Morgan.
   Mrs. Morgan is survived by two sisters, Jeanette Prince of Woodland and Lillie Shaw of 
Stedman, N.C.; a brother Clifford Green of Woodland; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Max Yarbrough, Dan Whitaker, Ryan Prince, Charles Green, Corey 
Prince and Matthew Ramirez.

Cullen Frasier Weaver

   (PENSACOLA, Fla.) Cullen Frasier Weaver, 85, of Pensacola, Fla., died Saturday, 
Sept. 16, 2000.
   Mr. Weaver was born July 6, 1915, in Milltown, Ala.  He was the son of Will Weaver 
and Hettie Burton Weaver.  Mr. Weaver was employed for 20 years by the Independent 
Life & Accident Company.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Lelia Joe 
Weaver.
   Mr. Weaver is survived by his daughter, Frances Weaver Reeves; a sister Mary Fannie 
Weaver Hinkle; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Bayview Memorial Park 
with the Rev. Allen Newton and Irene Jones officiating.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
   Arrangements were by Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel.

Alma Corley Rasbury

   (ROANOKE) Services for Alma Corley Rasbury, 83, of Roanoke were at 11 a.m. 
Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at First Baptist Church in Roanoke with Dr. Douglas Turner 
and the Rev. Tex Ergle officiating.  Burial followed at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Rasbury died Thursday, Sept. 21, at her residence.
   A lifelong resident of Roanoke, she was born Jan. 4, 1917, daughter of William F. and 
Maude Yates Corley.  She had been employed as a medical receptionist, was a member of 
the Pilot Club, the Joy Club of First Baptist, and was a member of First Baptist Church of 
Roanoke.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Rasbury.
   Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Mary Rasbury of Wedowee, a 
brother, William Corley of Winterhaven, Fla.; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter, 
and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Stanley Daniel, Blu Sledge, Doug Cofield, Tommy Cato, Barry Owens 
and Trae Wilkinson.  Honorary pallbearers were members of the Philathea Sunday School 
Class.

James Springer

   (WEDOWEE) Services for James "Jim" Springer, 70, of Wedowee were Tuesday, Sept. 
26, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Revs. Chris Mitchell and Bev Olds 
officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Springer died Saturday, Sept. 23, at Wedowee Hospital following a short illness.
   A former resident of Genoa, N.Y., Mr. Springer was born there on April 2, 1930, son of 
McKinley and Ailene Sherman Springer.  He was retired from the Marine Corps and had 
served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.  Mr. Springer also worked as a security guard at 
Randolph County Hospital.  He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.
   Survivors include his wife, Lois Springer of Wedowee; one daughter, Terri J. Springer 
Bailey of Wedowee; three sons, James Steven Springer and Everett Wayne Springer of 
Edinburg, Va., and Laurence Dean Springer of Woodstock, Va.; 12 grandchildren and 
seven great-grandchildren.

Charlie F. Allen

   (ROANOKE) Charlie F. "Buster" Allen, 84, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 
2000, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services were at Sweet Home Baptist Church, Five Points, on Monday, Sept. 25, at 2 
p.m. with the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Surviving are two sisters, Fannie Mae Allen Trammell of Roanoke and Rebecca Allen 
Peavy of LaFayette; one brother, Monroe Allen of Atlanta, Ga.; and a host of nieces and 
nephews.
   Mr. Allen was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Raymon 'Pete' Carter

   (POPLAR BLUFF, Mo.) Raymon "Pete" Carter, 62, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., died on 
Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at his residence.
   Mr. Carter was born on Aug. 20, 1938, in Abanda, Ala.  He was a truck driver, a 
veteran of the U.S. Air Force, retired in 1976, and a retired lab technician from the 
Veterans Administration in 1996.  He was a past master of the Poplar Bluff Blue Lodge, a 
past president of the Three Rivers Shrine Club, a member of AM VETS, and was of the 
Methodist faith.
   On April 21, 1962, he married Marion King in Hopewell, Va.  She survives.
   Also surviving are two sons, Raymon Jefferson Carter of Ringgold, Ga., and John David 
Carter of Poplar Bluff; one daughter, Leigh Ann Kelm of Poplar Bluff; one sister, Myra 
Jean McCharque of Fayetteville, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Fitch-Hillis Funeral Home, Poplar Bluff.
