OBITUARIES:

Marion J. Gay

   (AUBURN) Funeral Services for Marion J. Gay, 68, of Auburn were at 11 a.m. 
Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Auburn First Baptist Church, with Dr. John Jeffers officiating.  
Burial was at 3 p.m. in the Big Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Randolph County.
   Mrs. Gay died Wednesday, July 25, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   She was born Nov. 15, 1932, in Eight Mile, Ala., to the late Brady and Mamie Irene 
Byrd Johnson.  Mrs. Gay retired after 24 years of services as the coordinator of 
Temporary Employment Services for Auburn University.  She was a member of Auburn 
First Baptist Church, where she was acitve in the Mary Martha Sunday School Class.
   Survivors include her husband, E. Austin Gay of Auburn; one son, Dr. William J. Gay; 
two daughters, Hope Butler and Lynn G. Burt; three grandchildren; four brothers, Walt, 
Gene, Don and Jeff Johnson; and five sisters, Irene Turner, Dot Sullivan, Alice Benedetti, 
Ella Mae Lochner and Ann Cox.
   In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that donations be made in Mrs. Gay's 
memory to the American Cancer Society, 2101 Executive Park Drive, Opelika, AL 36801 
or the East Alabama Food Bank, 1415 Pumphrey Ave., Auburn, AL 36832.
   Arrangements were by Frederick's Funeral Home, Opelika.

Otis D. Janney

   (ROOPVILLE, GA) Otis D. Janney, 88, of Roopville, Ga., died Monday, July 23, 2001, 
at Tanner Medical Ctenter, Carrollton, Ga.
   Mr. Janney was born Sept. 28, 1912, son of the late Jesse C. and Pearl Moses Janney.  
He was retired as a teacher with the Heard County Board of Education.  He was a 
member of the Loftin Masonic Lodge in Ephesus, Ga.  He was married to the late Jessie 
Gay Janney.
   Surviving are two sons, Harold Janney and Otis Gay Janney of Bowdon, Ga.; a sister, 
Virginia Davis of LaGrange, Ga.; four grandchilden and four great-grandchildren.
   Services were at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, at Ephesus Baptist Church, with the Rev. 
Gerald Rogers and the Rev. Fred Cooks officiating.  Burial was in Big Springs Baptist 
Church Cemetery in Randolph County.
   Arrangements were by Rainwater and West Funeral Home, Bowdon.

Charles Terry Laney

   (ROANOKE) Services for Charles Terry Laney, 45, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. Sunday, 
July 29, 2001, at Napoleon East Church of Christ, with the Rev. Stacey Heard Officiating.  
Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Laney died Tuesday, July 24, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston.
   He was born in Randolph County on Nov. 4, 1955, son of Bobby Orvin and Dorothy 
Jeanette Banks Laney.  He had been employed with Wellborn Cabinets.  He was preceded 
in death by a sister and his father.
   Survivors include two daughters, Penny Denise Acosta of Moultrie, Ga., and Janice 
Barresi of Lanett; his mother, Dorothy Laney of Lanett; and two grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Kenneth A. Hoke

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Kenneth A. "Yank" Hoke, 80, of Wedowee were at 11:30 
a.m., Friday, July 27, 2001, at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Revs. Phillip Johnson 
and C. L. Wilkes officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Hoke died Tuesday, July 24, at his residence.
   He was born in Franklin, NY on Mar 18, 1921, son of Archie R. John Hoke and Ruby 
Ann Height Hoke.  He was an Army veteran of World War II and recipient of a Purple 
Heart.  He had been employed with Plantation Patterns and was a member of Providence 
Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Alice Wright Hoke of Wedowee; a son, Jim J. "Five-O" 
Wright of Wedowee; six sisters, Maggie Hall, Helen Healey, Ethel Eckler, Sharon Bosch 
and Irene Vandenburg, all of New York, and Ellenor Hardy of California, seven brothers, 
Neil Hoke, Earnest "Skip" Hoke, John "Jack" Hoke, Butch Hoke, Arthur "Ark" Hoke, all 
of New York, Archie Hoke and Robert Hoke, both of California; and several nieces and 
nephews.
   Pallbearers were Jeff Fuller, William "Bill" Dillard, Shawn Taylor, Phillip McGill, 
Charles Anderson, Timmy Mitchell and George Anderson.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Rebye Chalkley Moore

   (ROANOKE) Graveside services for Rebye Chalkley Moore, 97, of Roanoke were at 2 
p.m. EDT Monday, July 30, 2001, at Enterprise Baptist Church in Richland, Ga., with Dr. 
Douglas Turner officiating.
   Mrs. Moore died Sunday, July 29, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   She was born in Marion County, Ga., and had resided in Weston, Ga.  She was born on 
Dec. 19, 1903, daughter of John E. and Leila Lawhorn Chalkley.  She had been employed 
at Kervin Department Store in Columbus, Ga., and was a member of First Baptist Church 
in Roanoke.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Chesterfield Moore.
   Survivors include a niece, Ann Awbrey Glass of Roanoke; a nephew, Jack C. Awbrey of 
Alabaster; a sister, Alice Carpenter of Sandersville, Ga.; and several other nieces and 
nephews.
   Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Roanoke, 827 Main Street, 
Roanoke, AL 36274.

Jessie Lois Gay

   (ROANOKE) Services for Jessie Lois Gay, 88, of Roanoke, formerly of Woodland, will 
be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at Big Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. 
Scott Hanna officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Gay died Sunday, July 29, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on Oct. 7, 1912, daughter of Thomas Washington 
Yarbrough and Julie Savannah Moore Yarbrough.  She was a homemaker and a member 
of Big Springs Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Handley 
Gay.
   Survivors include three daughters, Geraldine Heard of Oxford, Meldarine Green of 
Ladson, SC, and Kathy King of Dalton, Ga.; a sister, Lera Davis of LaGrange; five 
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Gay will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
   Memorials may be floral or donations can be made to Big Springs Baptist Church.
   Pallbearers will Donald Heard, Winford Champion, Pepper Brooks, Chris Cox, Carlton 
Yarbrough, Ted Noles, Barry Hammonds and Danny Butler.

Fred L. Johnson

   (GRAHAM) Services for Fred L. Johnson, 80, of Graham, will be at 2 p.m. CDT on 
Wednesday, Aug 1, 2001, at Shiloh Baptist Church, with the Revs. Gary Henderson and 
Tony Morris officiating.  Burial will follow at Herren's Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Johnson died Monday, July 30, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   He was born in Randolph County on July 14, 1921, son of Robert Bob Johnson and 
Ethel Earnest Johnson.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, a self-employed farmer 
and owner of Johnson's BBQ, and a deacon at Shiloh Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Curtis Herren Johnson of Graham; a son, David Johnson of 
Wedowee; a sister, Katherine Rampy of Woodland; two brothers, Martin Johnson of 
Omaha and Earnest Johnson of Fayetteville, Ga.; and two grandsons.
   Mr. Johnson will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be Don Gay, Rayford Edmondson, Kenneth Spratlin, Steve Johnson, 
Joey Burns and Steve Burns.  Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Shiloh Baptist 
Church.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Velma Bernice Hodnett Carden

   (WADLEY) Services for Velma Bernice Hodnett Carden, 87, of Wadley were 
Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at 11:30 a.m. at Mountain Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. 
Tim Whaley officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Carden died on Tuesday, July 31, at her residence.
   She was born on April 1, 1914, in Whigham, Ga., to Lindsay Grier and Mary Narcis 
Stephens Hodnett.  She was a homemaker and member of Mountain Springs Baptist 
Church.
   She is survived by two sons, Jerry Mack Carden of Wadley and Daniel Grier Carden of 
Auburn, Ga.; three daughters, Karlie Jean Fortson of Wadley, Annie Lee Carter of Bryans 
Road, Md., and Rose Mary Collins of Hoschton, Ga.; one sister, Irene Knight of Wadley; 
13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband 
of 40 years, Johnnie Carden, her parents, and one brother, William Carrol Hodnett.
   The family will welcome memorial contributions to the Christian charity of one's choice.
   Arrangements were by Radney's Funeral Home, Alexander City.

Jon Kenneth 'K.B.' Bowen

   (ROANOKE) Services for Jon Kenneth "K.B." Bowen, 43, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Frank Foster and 
Charles Fetner officiating.
   Mr. Bowen died Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Dec. 18, 1957, son of John and 
Wilma Richardson Bowen.  He was employed at Candlewick Yarns and was a member of 
Rock Mills Church of the Nazarene.
   Survivors include his wife, Barbara Brewer Bowen of Roanoke; a son, Kenneth Wayne 
Bowen of Roanoke; parents, John and Wilma Bowen of Roanoke; grandparents, Henry 
and Camilla Richardson of Woodland; and a brother, Davey Bowen of Roanoke.
   Memorials may be floral or donations can be made to the Rock Mills Church of the 
Nazarene Building Fund, 66447 Alabama Hwy. 22, Rock Mills, AL 36274.

Bennie Frank Carson

   (WADLEY) Services for Bennie Frank Carson, 76, of Wadley were at 10 a.m. Friday, 
Aug. 3, 2001, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Calvin Teel officiating.  Burial 
was at Forrester's Chapel Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Carson died Thursday, Aug. 2, at his residence.
   A former resident of Hiram, Ga., he was born in Wadley on Jan. 4, 1925, son of John 
W. and Beatrice Britt Carson.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II, was retired from 
Lockheed Marietta, had served as fire chief of Hiram and was a lifelong member of 
Forrester's Chapel Methodist Church.
   Survivors include his wife of 48 years, May Anne Augusta Brown Carson; a son, Barry 
Carson of Wadley; three daughters, Donna Smith of Dallas, Ga., Brenda Carson of 
Wadley and Kathy Scarantino of Douglasville, Ga., a sister, Annie Ruth Harris of Wadley; 
16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Gail Maddux Dyess

   (VALLEY) Services for Gail Maddux Dyess, 51, of Valley were Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, 
at 2 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene in Fairfax with the Rev. Wallace Bell officiating.  
Burial followed at Fairfax Cemetery.
   Mrs. Dyess died Wednesday, Aug. 1, at her residence.
   A native of Roanoke, Mrs. Dyess was born April 23, 1950, in Roanoke.  She was a 
member of First Church of the Nazarene in Fairfax and a former member of the Southern 
Order of Story Tellers and Painted Rock Art Society.  Mrs. Maddux was a graduate of 
Auburn University and had formerly taught art at Springwood School in Lanett and 
privately.
   She is survived by her husband, Carl Dyess; a sister, Derender Trippel of Sharpsburg, 
Ga.; four brothers, Gary Maddux of West Point, Ga., Danny Maddux of Marietta, Ga., 
Rodney Maddux of Grayson, Ga., and Barry Maddux of Valley; two nephews, six nieces 
and one great-nephew.
   Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Operation Blessing through the 
700 Club in her memory.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Services Funeral Home, Valley.

Alice Gilder

   (LAFAYETTE) Services for Alice Gilder, 96, of LaFayette were Saturday, Aug. 4, 
2001, at 2 p.m. at New Harmony Baptist Church of LaFayette with the Rev. W. H. 
Trammell officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Gilder died Monday, July 30, at Randolph Medical Center.
   She was born Oct. 23, 1904, in Chambers County and was a member of New Harmony 
Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Gilder is survived by two sons, Charles Gilder of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Wilson 
Gilder of LaFayette; six daughters, Linnie Heath and Annie Ruth Askew of Lanett, Jessie 
Mae Gilder and Mozell Bell of LaFayette, Lillie Askew of Chattanooga and Lucille 
Browder of Glenwood, Ill.; one brother, Eddie B. Slay of Atlanta; a daughter-in-law; two 
sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; 32 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 12 
great-grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Silmon-Seroyer Funeral Home, LaFayette.

Jeff Toole

   (BIRMINGHAM) The funeral service for Jeff Toole, also known as "The Tooleman," 
was at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Southside Baptist Church, Birmingham, with Dr. 
Stephen Jones officiating.  Burial followed at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East in 
Trussville.
   He died on Friday, Aug. 3.
   Mr. Toole is survived by his wife, Paula Toole of Birmingham; his parents, James W. 
and Joann Toole of Lake Wedowee; and his grandmother, Mrs. Pearl Johnston of 
Bowdon, Ga.
   Born Sept. 16, 1960, Mr. Toole was a local radio personality and actor, who served as a 
traffic reporter for Metro Traffic in Birmingham, featured on many local Birmingham 
stations.  He was known for his generosity, compassion and sense of humor.  A member 
of Southside Baptist Church, Mr. Toole dedicated his time and energy to helping the 
homeless and giving to youth programs.  Mr. Toole was an accomplished pianist and acted 
in local commercials and theatre productions in the Birmingham area.
   Pallbearers were Curtis Slay, Scott Martin, Bruce Henry, Ronnie Bruce, Jeff Bell and 
Matt Howerton.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Birmingham Hospility Network, 1016 
19th St. S., Birmingham, AL 35205; Southside Baptist Church Youth Fund, P.O. Box 
55058, Birmingham, AL 35205; or the Birmingham Humane Society, 1713 Lomb Ave.,

Verdie Wilder French

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Verdie Wilder French, 94, of Wedowee were Monday, Aug. 
6, 2001, at 11 a.m. Benefield Funeral Chapel with family members delivering the eulogy.  
Burial followed at Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mrs. French died Saturday, Aug. 4, at LaGrange Hospice.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. French was born June 4, 1907, daughter of 
John and Betty Hudley [sic - Hadley] Wilder.  She was a homemaker and a member of 
Union Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Walker French, and a 
daughter, Roberta Phibbs.
   Survivors include two daughters, Marvelene Burch of Anniston and Johnnie New of 
Wedowee; two sons, Dewitt French of Dadeville and Robert French of Greenville, S.C.; 
four sisters, Flora Reaves of Dothan, Nonnie Faye Huey and Mary Lou Huey of 
Wedowee, and Mildred Benefield of Tullahoma, Tenn.; a brother, John Wilder of 
Columbus, Ga.; eight grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great- 
grandchildren.

Beulah Holmes Haynes

   (LAFAYETTE) The funeral for Beulah Homes Haynes, 90, of LaFayette was Saturday, 
Aug 4, 2001, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joyce Woodstuff 
and Dr. Richard D. Cobb officiating.  Burial was at LaFayette City Cemetery.
   Mrs. Haynes died Thursday, Aug. 2, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   A retired elementary school teacher in the Chambers County School System, Mrs. 
Haynes was a native of Clay County, born July 2, 1911.  She was a member of the First 
United Methodist Church of LaFayette.  Mrs. Haynes was preceded in death by her 
husband, Morse Haynes, and her son, Dr. C. Doyle Haynes.
   She is survived by two daughters, Rowena H. Boland of Peachtree City, Ga., and Ann 
H. Waid of Auburn; one brother, Lovvorn Holmes of Woodland; seven grandchildren and 
13 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Cole Haynes, Russell Boland, Allen Boland, Casey Waid, Hallman 
Bradshaw, Stewart Horsley and Lewis Howard.
   In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart Center at East Alabama Medical 
Center, Opelika, or to C.U.R.E. 1835 Savoy Dr., Suite 317, Atlanta, GA 30342-1000.

Edna Eunice Cosper Brumbeloe

   (ROANOKE) Services for Edna Eunice Cosper Brumbeloe, 89, of Roanoke were 
Monday, Aug. 6, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tex Ergle 
officiating.  Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Brumbeloe died Friday, Aug 3, at her home.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Brumbeloe was born Feb. 14, 1912, at 
Graham, daughter of Ezra and Pearl Holliday Cosper.  She had been employed with 
handley Mills and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Roanoke.  Mrs. 
Brumbeloe was preceded in death by he husband, Ray Brumbeloe; sons, Thomas E. and 
Billy Ray Brumbeloe; grandson, Bobby Brumbeloe; sister, Willie Lou Cosper; and brother, 
Sydney Cosper.
   Survivors include a sister, Virginia Shapiro of Roanoke; daughter-in-law, Gladys 
Brumbeloe; four grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver, 
Virginia McKinnley.
   Pallbearers were Byron Kaylor, Aubrey Kaylor, David Brumbeloe, Gregory Brumbeloe, 
Bryan Brumbeloe and Will Brumbeloe.  Members of Mrs. Brumbeloe's Sunday School 
Class at First United Methodist Church served as honorary pallbearers.

Charles O. Ferguson Jr.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Charles O. Ferguson Jr., 79, of Wedowee, will be Thursday, 
Aug 9, 2001 at 11 a.m. from Russell and Hitch Funeral Home in Lebanon, Ind.  Burial will 
follow at Old Union Cemetery in Lebanon.
   Mr. Ferguson died Saturday, Aug. 4, at Jacksonville Health and Rehab in Jacksonville.
   He was born in LaFayette, Ind., son of Charles O. and Mable Ruth Tribble Ferguson.  
He was an Army veteran on World War II, had been employed wih Allison General 
Motors, and was Church of Christ by faith.
   Survivors include two daughters, Connie Anderson of Wedowee and Nancy S. Russell 
of Pittsboro, Ind.; two sons, Charles C. Ferguson of Frankfort, Ind., and Clinton E. 
Ferguson of Greenwood, Ind.; three sisters, Phyliss Taylor and Rosemary Minear, both of 
LaFayette, Ind., and Ruthie Holt of Neelyville, Mo.; a brother, Donnie Ferguson of 
Brookston, Ind.; eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends at Russell and Hitch Funeral Hone from 2 until 8 p.m. on 
Wednesday, Aug 8.

J. C. Camp

   (WEDOWEE) Services for J. C. Camp, 90, of Wedowee were on Sunday, Aug 12, 
2001, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Wedowee, with the Revs. Don Paris, Gold 
Cofield and Joey Gay officiating.  Burial was at Wedowee City Cemetery.
   Mr. Camp died Thursday, Aug. 9, at Wedowee Hospital in Wedowee.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born on Jan. 15, 1911, son of David 
Carter and Eva Lou Hadley Camp.  He had taught at the vocational and technical school 
in Opelika and was a member of First Baptist Church in Wedowee.
   Survivors include his wife, Eva Lee McCord Camp of Wedowee; three sons, Donald 
Larry Camp of Birmingham and Benny Camp and Thomas C. Camp of Wedowee; a 
brother, C. F. Camp of Decatur; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were David Camp, Dwain Camp, Ben Camp, Bill Morrison, Brad Capel and 
James R. Kirby.

Shirley Wilkes

   (ROANOKE) Shirley A. Wilkes, 67, of Roanoke died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at 
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services were Monday, Aug. 13, at 1 p.m. at Deliverance Temple Church of God, 
Roanoke, with Elder Kenneth Bryant officiating.  Burial was in Skyview Memorial 
Gardens, Welch.
   Survivors include her husband, Bishop C. L. Wilkes of Roanoke; a son, Henry Charles 
Wilkes of Roanoke; six daughters, Mrs. Lola W. Gray of Birmingham, Ms. Johnnie Mae 
Wilkes, Mrs. Kelly Ann Philips, Mrs. Sarah Louise Brown and Mrs. Dorothy Marie 
Tucker, all of Roanoke, and Mrs. Syretta Lorraine Revels of Seattle, Wash.; a stepson, 
Curtis Lawrence Buggs of Gadsden; 12 grandsons; nine granddaughters; her father John 
Henry Harris of Gadsden; one brother, Richard Harris of Houston, Texas; and one sister, 
Ms. Jacquelin Harris of Gadsden.
   Mrs. Wilkes was born Aug. 4, 1934, in Gadsden, of of three children of John Henry 
Harris and the late Naomi Lewis Harris.  She married Bishop C. L. Wilkes Dec. 21, 1952, 
and resided with him in Houston for a number of years.  They co-founded Deliverance 
Temple Church of God in Roanoke.  She traveled extensively with her husband 
throughout the United States, ministering to congregations in all parts of the country.  As 
"first lady" of Deliverance Temple church, she set an example for many young women in 
the church.  For many years, Mrs. Wilkes ministered along with her husband on the local 
radio station on Sunday mornings, and she is remembered as a gifted Bible teacher and 
minister.  One of her favorite songs, "God is not dead, he's yet alive, and he's still working 
miracles in my life..." kept her healed and kept her family for many years.  She devoted her 
live to homemaking, raising their nine children, and serving the church.  Mrs. Wilkes 
finally succumbed after an arduous battle with cancer.
   Mrs. Wilkes is preceded in death by her mother; a sister, Jo Ann Elizabeth Young; a son, 
Charles Wilkes Jr., who died shortly before his second birthday; a daughter, Norma Jean 
Joiner; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Edna Slagle

   (LAFAYETTE) Edna Slagle, 85, of LaFayette died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at 
LaFayette Nursing Home.
   Services were at Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 
with interment at Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.  The Rev. Maynard McGinty 
officiated.
   Mrs. Slagle was a native of Chambers County, born June 1, 1916. She was a member of 
Rock Springs Baptist Church and a retired textile employee.  Survivors include a brother, 
Joe C. Shaver of LaFayette, and two nieces, Carol Stephens of LaFayette and Lynda 
Underwood of Opelika.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom L. Slagle.

   (CUSSETA) Evelyn Hurst, 68, of Cusseta died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at her 
residence.
   Graveside services will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, at noon at Concord Baptist Church 
Cemetery near Wadley.
   Mrs. Hurst was a native of Chambers County, born Nov. 1, 1932.  She was a retired 
textile employee.
   Surviving are five children, Susan Bassett of LaFayette, Melvin Hurst Jr. of Dickinson, 
Texas, Cynthia Brewer of Auburn, Steven Hurst of Destin, Fla., and Tina Burroughs of 
Cusseta; one sister, Lois Phils of Crestview, Fla.; 16 grandchildren and 19 great- 
grandchildren.

Mary Lee Thompson

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mary Lee Thompson, 35, of Roanoke will be Friday, Aug. 
17, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Rehope Baptist Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. H. L. Jones 
officiating.  Burial will be at the church cemetery.
   Miss Thompson died Sunday, Aug. 12, at her residence.
   Miss Thompson was a member of Rehope Baptist Church, Roanoke.  She was preceded 
in death by her mother, Mrs. Ida Mae Thompson.
   She is survived by her father, Horace Thompson of Roanoke; three sisters, Patricia 
Thompson, Barbara Morgan and Brenda L. Turner, all of Roanoke; and one brother, Jerry 
Wayne Thompson of Roanoke.
   Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 16, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

   (MELBOURNE, Fla.) Evelyn J. Owen, 74, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, in Melbourne, 
Fla.
   Evelyn was born in Omaha, Ala., and came to Brevard County, Fla., in 1959 from 
Roanoke.  She worked as a floral designer at Flower Box in Melbourne for 20 years.
   Survivors include her husband, Calvin Owen; daughters, Patsy Fleming and Dawn 
Nobili; three grandsons; two brothers, Ted and Bill Noles; and a sister, Doris Gann.
   Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Brownlie-Maxwell Chapel, Melbourne.

Jenifer Laura Johnson Taylor

   (ROANOKE) Services for Jenifer Laura Johnson Taylor, 35, of Roanoke, formerly of 
Fayetteville, N.C., were Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel, with the Revs. Johnny Williams and Wally Rezendes officiating.  Graveside 
services were Sunday at 2 p.m. at Live Oaks Cemetery, Walterboro, S.C.
   Mrs. Taylor died suddenly on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at her home in Roanoke.
   A Fayetteville, N.C., native, Mrs. Taylor was born Sept. 17, 1965, daughter of Norman 
and Laura Agnes Averitt Johnson.  She attended Maplewood Baptist Church.
   Survivors include her husband, David Taylor of Roanoke; two daughters, Laura Paige 
Taylor and Megan Destiny Taylor of Roanoke; a step-daughter, Desiree Nicole Taylor of 
Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Patsy Moore and Sandra Headden of Fayetteville; a brother, 
Alan Headden of Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews.

Earnest D. Staples

   (WADLEY) Earnest D. Staples, 76, of Wadley died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at 
Florence Hand Home, LaGrange, Ga.
   Services were at Hope Well Baptist Church, Wadley, on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m. 
with the Rev. Calvin Trammell officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Surviving are one son, Donald Bailey of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Mary 
Staples of Wadley; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
   Mr. Staples was a member of Hope Well Baptist Church, where he served as a devoted 
trustee until his health failed.

Lillian Bassett Tabaka

   (STUART, Fla.) Services for Lillian Bassett Tabaka, 79, of Stuart, Fla., formerly of 
Clay County, Ala., and Detroit, Mich., were at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at 
Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with Mr. J. D. Porter officiating.  Burial was at Forrester's 
Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Tabaka died Wednesday, Aug. at, at her residence.
   She was born in Clay County on Dec. 15, 1921, daughter of Jim and Nora Padgett 
Bassett.  She was a homemaker and a Baptist by faith.
   Survivors include three sons, Charles W. Hester of Stuart and Donnie L. Hester and 
Louis M. Hester of Warren, Mich.; two sisters, Anna Allen and Louise Forrester of 
LaGrange, Ga.; a brother, Edward Bassett of Roanoke; and nine grandchildren.

   (ROANOKE) Kenneth Demon Jones, 23, of 1066 County Road 818, Roanoke, died 
Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at his residence.

Roanoke, with the Rev. Tommie L. Finley officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

and Evelyn Marable; a son, Keldrin Staples; his twin sister, Kisha Jones; two brothers,

Anthony Parker; two half sisters, Adrienne and Elonda Billingsley; three foster brothers, 
Keith, Chris and Barry Marable; a foster sister, Rhonda Marable-McVey; his longtime

Clifford Ragsdale

   (PENTON) Clifford Ragsdale, 91, of Penton died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Traylor 
Nursing Home, Roanoke.
   Mr. Ragsdale was a native of Chambers County, born June 25, 1910.  He was retired 
form Avondale Mills after 38 years of service and was a a member of Milltown Methodist 
Church.
   Services were at Milltown Methodist Church on Monday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m. with 
interment in Penton Church of God Cemetery.  The Rev. Calvin Teel and the Rev. Jimmy 
Allen officiated.
   Surviving are his wife, Lala Weldon Ragsdale of Penton; two daughters, Peggy Shaver 
of Milltown and LaRue Wallace of Ft. Walton, Fla.; a sister, Mary Ella Daniel of Opelika; 
a brother, John Lee Ragsdale of LaFayette; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren 
and seven great-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Betty 
Oliver.

Jerry Glen Thrift

   (VALLEY) Jerry Glen Thrift, 44, of Valley died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital.
   Mr. Thrift was born in Clay County on Sept. 24, 1956.  He was an employee of Williams 
Trucking Company in Roanoke and attended Huguley Church of the Nazarene.
   Surviving are his wife, Nancy Brand Thrift; five daughters, Shirley and Tanya of Clay 
County and Crystal, Kathy and Tonia of Valley; his mother Virginia Thrift of Valley; a 
brother, Kenneth Ray Thrift of Roanoke; a sister, Dianne Ogle of Valley; and four 
grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his father, James Lee Thrift.
   Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 11 a.m. on 
Saturday, Aug. 18, with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.  The Rev. Robert Rhodes 
officiated.

Annie Ruth Carson Harris

   (ROANOKE) Services for Annie Ruth Carson Harris, 85, of Roanoke were Saturday,

officiating.  Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery.
   Mrs. Harris died Thursday, Aug. 16, at Randolph Medical Center.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Harris was born March 25, 1916, daughter 
of John W. and Beatrice Britt Carson.  She was a homemaker and a member of Lane's 
Chapel Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, J. D. Harris.
   Survivors include two sons, James Harris of Lanett and Alvin Harris of Five Points; nine 
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

   (ROANOKE) Services for Donald Watts Moore, 69, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m.

   Mr. Moore died Friday, Aug. 17, at Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.
   A native and former resident of Atlanta, Mr. Moore was born on June 20, 1932, son of 
J. C. Moore and Joan Watts Moore.  He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, was 
retired from Delta Airlines, and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Geneva Waldrep Moore of Roanoke; his mother and 
stepfather, Joan and Frank Dobson of Decatur, Ga.; a daughter, Charline Felix of Conyers, 
Ga.; a son, David Bryant Moore of Conyers; a stepdaughter, Karen Norred of Wadley; 
three stepsons, Ronald White of Alabaster, Ricky White of Roanoke and Darren White of 
Lanett; a halfbrother, Dan Moore of Atlanta; and 15 grandchildren.

   Mrs. Whaley died Thursday, Aug. 16, in Chambers County.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Whaley was born Jan. 6, 1924, daughter of Rube and 
Willie Mae Oates Whaley.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and had 
worked with Handley Mills.  She was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers: 
Chink, Swann, Fred, Gross and J. T. Whaley.
   Survivors include two sisters, Inez Holloway of Wedowee and Velma Mitchum of 
Huntsville; four brothers, including a twin brother, Pete Whaley of Roanoke, Lum Pearce 
Whaley and Harvis Whaley, both of Wedowee, and H. S. Whaley of Roanoke.

Anthony Clyde Sanders

   (HEFLIN) Services for Anthony Clyde Sanders, 16, of Heflin were at 2 p.m. Sunday,

Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Sanders died Thursday, Aug. 16, at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
   He was born in Calhoun County on Nov. 20, 1984, son of Richard Wayne Sanders and 
Marla Charlene White.  He was a student at Randolph County High School and a member 
of Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his parents; grandmothers, Rubye White of Heflin and Bonnie Sanders 
of Roanoke; two uncles, Rodney Sanders and John Tom Sanders of Roanoke; an aunt, 
Deborah Jones of Heflin; and a cousin Kelly Milstead of Heflin.

Lera Viola Kirby

   (ROANOKE) Services for Lera Viola Kirby, 94, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. Thursday, 
Aug. 23, 2001 at Rock Stand Christian Church, with the Revs. Don Quick, Harold Bonner 
and Kenneth Johnson officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Kirby died Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Traylor Nursing Home in Raonoke.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born on March 26, 1907, daughter of 
Church Hill Allen and Dura Clark Allen.  She had been employed with Palm Beach 
Company and was a member of Rock Stand Christian Church.  She was preceded in death 
by two husbands, Odell Caldwell and Jadie Austin Kirby.
   Survivors include four stepdaughters, Frances Bailey of Heflin, Joyce Prince and Betty 
Moon of Roanoke, and Martha Murphree of Starkville, Miss.; a stepson, Austin Kirby of 
LaGrange, Ga.; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
   Pallbearers were Ricky Pike, Alan Pike, David Beverly, Paton Zeigler, Edward Beverly 
and Alan Blythe.  Honorary pallbearers were Fred May, W. T. Clark, John Harmon, Bill 
Prince, Wallace Murphree, Wayne Jones and Shaff Wier.

Derek Lamb

   (LAFAYETTE) Derek Lamb, 32, of LaFayette died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, in 
Marietta, Ga.
   Mr. Lamb was born in Troup County, Ga., on Nov. 22, 1968.  He was employed as a 
supervisor at Russell Mills in LaFayette.
   Graveside services were Sunday, Aug. 26, at 3 p.m. at LaFayette City Cemetery, with 
the Rev. Clifford DeLee officiating.
   Survivors include his wife, Tracy Lamb of LaFayette; a son, Dustin Lamb of LaFayette; 
his mother, Linda Bradfield of LaFayette; his father, Nick Lamb of LaFayette; his 
grandmothers, Liller Mae Lamb and Jo Ella Walters of LaFayette; and a stepmother, 
Jackie T. Lamb of LaFayette.

Hubert Hendricks

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Hubert Hendricks, 70, of Franklin, Ga., died Saturday, Aug. 25, 
2001, at his home after several months of declining health.
   Mr. Hendricks was born in Heard County, Ga., on March 2, 1931, to the late Dewey 
Hendricks and the late Gladys Yarbrough Hendricks.  He was also preceded in death by 
his beloved daughter Betty Jean Blanks.  He was in the textile industry and was a faithful 
member of Bethel Christian Church.
   Services for Mr. Hendricks were Monday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at Bethel Christian 
Church, with the Rev. Caryl Scott officiating.  Interment was in the church cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Winnie Fred Barnes Hendricks; one daughter, Eirtha Powell; 
two sons, Bobby and Johnny Hendricks; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, 
all of Franklin; and two brothers, Curtis Hendricks of Franklin and Hollis Hendricks of 
Carrollton, Ga.

Jacqueline Belle "Jackie" Jones

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Jacqueline Belle "Jackie" Jones, 73, of Wedowee were at 2 
p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Cosper 
officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Jones died Friday, Aug. 24, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in 
Anniston.
   A former resident of College Park, Ga., she was born in Fulton County, Ga., on March 
31, 1928.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Swagg Homemakers Club, Mt. 
Laurel Community Club and St. John's Catholic Church in Atlanta.  She was the daughter 
of the late Samuel Vernon Robinson and Ruby Carr Robinson Hebert.
   Survivors include her husband, Edward E. Jones of Wedowee; four daughters, Beverly 
Bishop of Wedowee, Deborah Hughes of Haleyville, Carla Snyder of Stockbridge, Ga., 
and Angie Morgan of Palmetto, Ga.; two sons, Mark Jones of Birmingham and Harold 
Jones of McDonough, Ga.; a brother, Charles Herbert of Smyrna, Ga.; 16 grandchildren 
and four great-grandchildren.

Arnold Smith
   
   (ROANOKE) Arnold Smith, 85, of Roanoke, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at his 
home.
   Mr. Smith, born March 16, 1916, in Randolph County, was the son of the late John 
Thomas and Martha Lisha Whitley Smith.  He retired from the Hillside Plant of Milliken 
and Company, and was a former resident of LaGrange, Ga.  Mr. Smith was a member of 
El-Bethel Baptist Church in Roanoke and a former member of Unity Baptist Church in 
LaGrange.  He was an Army veteran of World War II.
   Survivors include his wife, Josie Smith; three stepsons, Gary Daniel of Douglasville, 
Ga., the Rev. Stanley Daniel and Steve Daniel, both of Roanoke; a stepdaughter, Christi 
Treadwell of Roanoke; 13 step grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, 
Lema Flournoy and Ada Haynes of LaGrange and Pauline Smith of Jonesboro, Ga.; two 
brothers, Eugene Smith and Bobby Smith of LaGrange; and several nieces and nephews.
   Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Unity Baptist Church in LaGrange.  The 
Revs. Bobby Robinson and Stanley Daniel officiated.  Burial was in Shadowlawn 
Cemetery.

Deborah Walker Daugherty

   (GRAHAM) Deborah "Debbie" Walker Daugherty, 45, of Graham, formerly of 
Douglasville, Ga., died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001.
   She was born on May 19, 1956, in Fulton County, Ga., daughter of Mrs. Phyllis Phillips 
Parker and the late Mr. Willie Bobby Walker.  She was a Baptist and a homemaker.
   She is survived by her husband, Ricky Marion Daugherty of Graham; a daughter, 
Stephanie Shelton Hampton of Fruithurst; her mother and stepfather, Phyllis and Willie J. 
Parker of Douglasville; sisters, Sybil Clark of Lithia Springs, Ga., and Sharon Clayton of 
Bonaire, Ga.; brothers, Mark Walker of Graham, Bryan Parker of Gwinnett County, Ga., 
and Steven Parker of Douglasville; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
   Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Douglas Chapel Jones-Wynn 
Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tommy Akin officiating.  Interment will follow at West 
Georgia Memorial Park.
