OBITUARIES:

John Henry Heard

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for John Henry Heard, 66, of Wadley were at 4 p.m. 
Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. S. T. Janney and 
Durward Williams officiating.  Burial was at White's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Heard died Monday, May 1, at Randolph County Hospital.
   Mr. Heard was born in Randolph County on March 25, 1934, son of John J. and Marie 
Green Heard.  He was employed with Franklin Aluminum, was an Air Force veteran of the 
Korean War, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Fairburn, Ga.
   Survivors include his mother, Marie Green Heard of Roanoke, two sisters, Annie Ruth 
Johnson of Roanoke and Betty Griffin of Fairburn.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Bernice S. Taft

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Bernice S. Taft, 76, of Roanoke were Sunday, April 
30, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Barry Cosper 
officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Taft died suddenly Friday, April 28, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Taft was born May 11, 1923, daughter of 
William J. and Inus Butler Stillwell.  She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity 
Baptist Church.  Mrs. Taft was preceded in death by a grandson, Robbie Taft.
   Survivors include her husband, Ray Taft of Roanoke; two daughters, Judy House of 
Roanoke and Brenda Barnett of Sylacauga; two sons, Waymon Taft and Billy Ray Taft of 
Roanoke; five granddaughters; two grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, 
Nadine Ward of Graham.
   Pallbearers were Jerry Wayne Gay, Barry Daniel, Bobby Ward, Randy Lovvorn, Randy 
Black, and Keith Hightower.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Herman Garfield Herren

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Herman Garfield Herren, 78, of Woodland were at 
3 p.m. Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Bethel East Baptist Church, with Brother W. C. 
Cofield and the Rev. Scott Hannah officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Herren died at his residence on Thursday, April 27.
   He was born in Randolph County on April 22, 1922, son of Willie and Hattie Burgess 
Herren.  He had been employed with Randolph County as an equipment operator and was 
a member of Bethel East Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by two daughters, 
Myrtie Lou Gosdin and Frances Jean Herren, and a grandchild, Jason Herren.
   Survivors include his wife, Ena Cofield Herren of Woodland; a son, Frankie Herren of 
Woodland; two sisters, Eunice Lewis and Irene Bailey of Woodland; a brother, Wallace 
Herren of LaGrange; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Jerry Herren, Greg Bailey, Ricky Bailey, Clarence Lewis, Wendell 
Herren and Mike Kirby.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

William Wallace 'Kitty' Fisher

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for William Wallace "Kitty" Fisher, 76, of Roanoke were 
at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. 
Shannon Mapp and S. T. Janney officiating.  Burial was at Fellowship Baptist Church 
Cemetery.
   Mr. Fisher died Monday, April 24, at his residence.
   He was born in Randolph County on Sept. 22, 1923, son of William Henry and Velma 
Wilkinson Fisher.  He was a World War II Army veteran, a retired truck driver and a 
member of Faith Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Bovine Norred Fisher of Roanoke; a daughter, Beverly Ann 
Hill of Montgomery; three sons, Mike Fisher and Jeff Fisher of Roanoke and Ronald 
Fisher of Woodstock, Ga.; a stepson, Kenny Calhoun of Roanoke; a sister, Sue Bradley of 
Roanoke; two brothers, Curtis Fisher of Roanoke and Walter Fisher of Zebulon, Ga.; 
four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Larry Joe Norred, Ronnie Norred, David Fisher, Phillip Calhoun, 
David Treadwell and Scotty Norred.

Willie Myrtice Green

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Willie Myrtice Green, 96, of Woodland were 
Friday, April 28, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Herren's Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Ridley 
Parmer and Paul Widener officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Green died Wednesday, April 26, at her home.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Green was born Dec. 29, 1903, daughter of Steven W. 
and Nancy M. Traylor Green [sic].  She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Hill 
Christian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Humphrey Letcher Green.
   Survivors include two sisters, Jewell Mote of Woodland and Curtis Johnson of Graham; 
one brother Willis Herren of Woodland; and several nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were David Johnson, Tommy Herren, Steve Herren, Joe Mote, Jason 
Merrill, Matt Herren and Wesley Herren.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Alvin Lamar Jones

   (STANDING ROCK) Graveside funeral services for Alvin Lamar Jones, 46, of Standing 
Rock were at 2 p.m. Friday, April 28, 2000, at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in 
Chambers County, with the Rev. Cecil Halsey officiating.
   Mr. Jones died Tuesday, April 25, at his residence.
   He was born in Russell County on May 12, 1953, son of Alvin C. and Peggy Chase 
Jones.  He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was a member of New Hope 
Baptist Church.
   Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Holsombeck Jones of Standing Rock; his step-father 
and mother, Marion and Peggy Hammond of Standing Rock; grandparent Lyndall 
Hammond of Standing Rock; four sisters, Linda Pressley of Crown Point, Ind., Atha 
Hawley and Rhonda Allen of Standing Rock, and Debbie Sewell of Roanoke; nine nieces 
and nephews; and two great nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Greg Moon, Lee Overton, Chris Stallings, Larry Caldwell, Mike 
Fulgham and Jonathan Weber.

Mildred Davis Elders

   (WOODLAND) Funeral services for Mildred Davis Elders, 90, of Woodland will be at 2 
p.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Providence Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tony Morris 
officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Elders died Monday, May 1, at Florence Hand Nursing Home in LaGrange, Ga., 
following an extended illness.
   A former resident of Lexington, S.C., she was born in Columbia, S.C., on March 25, 
1910, daughter of Arthur and Lillian Irene Hutson Davis.  She was a nurse at Columbia 
State Hospital and a member of Providence Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death 
by a daughter, Betty Crosby, and one grandson.
   Survivors include a son, Jesse T. Elders Jr. of Woodland; a sister, Ruby Martin of 
Columbia, S.C.; seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great- 
grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Elders will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. on 
Wednesday.
   Pallbearers will be grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Naomi Smith

   (WEDOWEE) Naomi Smith, 52, of Wedowee died Saturday, April 29, 2000 at 
Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Anniston.
   Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 3, at 3 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist 
Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. Joseph Hepburn officiating.  Burial will be in the church 
cemetery.
   Survivors include her parents, Charlie and Virginia Turner of Woodland; her husband, 
Henry Lewis Clark of Carrollton, Ga.; three sons, Nelvin Smith of Carrollton, Gregory 
Bernard Smith of Lakeland, Fla., and Victor Demetrius Smith of Dallas, Texas; two 
daughters, Sharon Berry and Antionette LaShawn Clark of Wedowee; four brothers, 
James Turner of Cincinnati, Ohio, Harold Turner of Denver, Colo., and Marvin Turner 
and David Turner of Woodland; three sisters, Mae Ola Dale and Lavern Dotson of Atlanta 
and Queen Ethel Wright of Wedowee; and six grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by her first husband, Willie Howard Smith.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Linda Diane Fullwood

   (ROANOKE) Linda Diane Fullwood, 46, of Roanoke died Thursday, April 27, 2000, at 
UAB Hospital, Birmingham.
   She was born Oct. 24, 1953, in West Palm Beach, Fla., daughter of D. C. and Betty 
Handling, presently of Roanoke.
   Survivors include her parents; one brother, Danny Handling; one sister, Gerry Lynn 
Mann; two nephews and one niece, all of Roanoke.
   The family had private services.  Her body was donated to the University of Alabama in 
Birmingham for medical research.
   Donation may be made to the Boshell Diabetic Hospital, 1808 7th Ave. South, 
Birmingham, AL 35294.

William Floyd Sears

   (GRACEVILLE, Fla.) Graveside services for William Floyd Sears, 65, of Graceville, 
Fla., formerly of Randolph county, were Sunday, May 7, 2000, at 9 a.m. at Providence 
Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. David Daniel officiating.
   Mr. Sears died Friday, May 5, at the Campbellton-Graceville Medical Center.
   Mr. Sears was a native of Randolph County, born Aug. 1, 1934, son of Willie Edward 
Sears and Cony Jones Parmer Sears.  He was self-employed in the lawn care industry.  He 
was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
   Mr. Sears is survived by a sister, Peggy Carpenter of Elba; a brother, Billy Sears of 
Temple, Ga., and several nieces.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Alice Odell Saxon

   (ROANOKE) Graveside funeral services for Alice Odell Saxon, 93, of Roanoke were at 
2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Pine Hill Christian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Ron 
Bream officiating.
   Mrs. Saxon died Thursday, May 4, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   She was born in Randolph County on Nov. 15, 1906, daughter of Pascal Frank and 
Mary Alice Breed Brooks.  She was a seamstress for Hubbard Slacks and was a member 
of Pine Hill Christian Church.
   Survivors include a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were DeRoy Butler, Jack Simpson, Jason Simpson, Tim Iverson, Jason 
Merrill and Dalton Cofield.

Anne Lemmon McKee

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Anne Lemmon McKee, 60, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
May 7, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. James Harper 
officiating.  Burial was in Missouri.
   Mrs. McKee died Friday, May 5, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A former resident of Springfield, Mo., Mrs. McKee was born Nov. 24, 1939, daughter 
of Orval J. and Freeda M. Grant Lemmon.  She was a member of Rock Mills Shanty 
Domino Club.
   Survivors include one daughter, Cinda Smith of Morrisville, Mo.; three sons, Billy 
Epperson of Brighton, Mo., Ray Epperson of Morrisville and Duke Epperson of 
Barttesville, Okla.; three sisters, Leah Gables and Dora Scott of Walnut Grove, Mo., and 
Eddie Walker of Springfield; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Kidney Fund, 
6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rockville, MD 20852.

Sonny Gene Hand

   (ROCK MILLS) Funeral services for Sonny Gene Hand, 25, of Rock Mills were at 
4 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Wendell 
Rush officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mr. Hand died Tuesday, May 2, at University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Jan. 13, 1975, son of Gary Gene 
and Deborah Hill Hand.  He was a Christian by faith.
   Survivors include his father and step-mother, Gary Hand of Rock Mills and Bonnie 
Jones of Grantville, Ga.; grandparents Wilbur and Betty Jean Guilford and Doris M. Hill, 
all of Rock Mills; a sister, Stephanie Hand of Johnstown, N.Y.; an uncle, two aunts, 
two nieces and two nephews.
   Pallbearers were Michael Rushing, Jimmy Albright, Chad Pike, Bryan Laws, Joey Hand 
and Jessie Boggs.  Honorary pallbearers were Scotty Hand, Erich Hand and Mike Brown.

Carolyn Janice Nobbley

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Carolyn Janice Nobbley, 59, of Roanoke were at 
1 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Bob Howard, 
James Harper and S. T. Janney officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Nobbley died Wednesday, May 3, at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital in Anniston.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, she was born Nov. 18, 1940, daughter of 
Tymon and Malinda Lucille Janney Head.  She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
   Survivors include her husband, Billie R. Nobbley of Roanoke; three sons, Greg Nobbley 
and Douglas Nobbley of Oxford and Donald Nobbley of Brunswick, Maine; a sister, Ann 
Fambro of Roanoke; a brother, Roger Head of Roanoke; and four grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Bobby Nobley, Glenn Newman, Mark Newman, Barry Harlin, Randall 
Robertson and Scott Whaley.

George W. Roberts

   (WADLEY) Graveside funeral services for George W. Roberts, 85, of Wadley were at 
11:30 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2000, at Randolph Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Tommy 
Gene Young officiating.
   Mr. Roberts died Tuesday, May 2 at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Nov. 3, 1914, son of James Walter 
and Elizabeth Roberts.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II, had been employed at 
Uniroyal, and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death 
by his wife of 49 years, Julie Mae Palmer Roberts.
   Survivors include three daughters, Peggy Mullholand of Norfolk, Va., Margie Zelano of 
Sumter, S.C., and Beth Edmondson of Anniston; five grandchildren and five great- 
grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Lelie Johnson Smith

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Funeral services for Lelie Johnson Smith, 92, of Alexander City 
were at 10 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2000, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. 
Mickey Vaughn and Thompson Pitts officiating.  Burial was at Forrester's Chapel Church 
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, May 3, at Chapman Nursing Home in Alexander City.
   She was born in Blount County on Feb. 14, 1908, daughter of Joe and Alice Carson 
Johnson.  She was a homemaker and a member of Forrester's Chapel Church.  She was 
preceded in death by two sons, David Smith and John Henry Smith; and by a daughter, 
Rena Padgett.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mary Smith of Manchester, Ga., and Nancy Waldrep 
of Wadley, and around 100 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Johnny Smith, Tommy Waldrep and Quien Smith.

Lucy Embery Mitchell

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Lucy Embery Mitchell,85, of Wedowee were Friday, 
May 5, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. Donald Spradlin and 
Sara Corson officiating.  Burial was at the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Mitchell died Wednesday, May 3, at the home of her daughter.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Mitchell was born Nov. 27, 1914, daughter of Ben and 
Doshie Price Embery.  She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Grove Baptist Church.  
She was preceded in death by her husband, Durell Mitchell; three sons and two grandsons.
   Survivors include two daughters, Rosa Lee Brassel of Coffeeville, Miss., and Sara 
Loveless of Wedowee; two sons, Lee Mitchell of Burlison, Tenn., and Marvin Mitchell of 
Wedowee; three sisters, including Ethel Mitchell of West Point, Ga., and Sara Waldrep; 
14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Barry Johnston, Rance Kirby, Billy Ragghianti, Gene Farner, Randy 
Cummings and Lamar Hammil.  David Loveless, Barry Loveless and Billy Wayne Brassel 
were honorary pallbearers.

Willie Henry 'Shakey' George

   (ATLANTA) Funeral services for William Henry "Shakey" George, 28, of Atlanta were 
Saturday, May 6, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Christian Family Worship Center, Atlanta, with 
Bishop Joseph Price officiating.  Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.
   Mr. George died Monday, May 1, at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta.
   Born May 15, 1971, in Fort Valley, Ga., Mr. George was the son of Willie and Cora 
Lowe.  He attended Peach County High School.  Mr. George moved to Atlanta, where he 
was a member of Christian Family Worship Center.  He was an usher, deacon in training 
and a member of the Men's Ministry.  Mr. George was employed by M & M Enterprises as 
a construction worker.  He was also highly recognized as a cook and caterer.
   He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Cofield George; two sons, Joseph and Jarrell; his 
mother, Cora Turner; four sisters, Gloria, Sharon Walton, Sandra Ann and Michelle 
Jackson; grandmother, Mattie Ellison; and a great many other family members and friends.  
He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Lowe.
   Pallbearers were Scottie Fain, Charles Thomas, Ernest Hicks, Charlie Dunn, Reginald 
Moses and Eugene Fagan.
   Services were by Sellers Brothers Inc. of Atlanta.

Linda Faye East

   (ALEXANDER CITY) Linda Faye East, 46, of Alexander City died Sunday, May 7, 
2000, at her home.  Mrs. East was born in Roanoke on Feb. 25, 1954, daughter of Sara 
Pearl Knott Yarbrough and the late Lindey Fred Yarbrough.  She was employed as a 
machine operator and was a volunteer with Emtact 8 in New Site.
   Survivors include her husband, Phillip East of New Site; two sons, Johnny I. Burgess, 
Jr. of Roanoke and Aubrey Shane Moncrief of Alexander City; her stepfather, Marlton 
Harmon of Roanoke; her mother Sara Pearl Harmon of Roanoke; three brothers, Michael 
Yarbrough of Icard, N.C., Thomas D. Boykin of Woodland and John Larry Simmons of 
Wedowee; three sisters, Brenda Joyce Rice, Susan E. Harmon and Penny Lyn Pope of 
Roanoke; and one grandson.
   Funeral services were at Radney Funeral Home Chapel, Alexander City, on Tuesday, 
May 9, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Earl Rollins and the Rev. Thomas Boykin officiating.  
Interment was in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke.
   Arrangements were by Radney Funeral Home, Alexander City.

Johnnie Ruth Smith

   (ROANOKE) Johnnie Ruth Smith, 81, of Roanoke died Saturday May 6, 2000, 
at Randolph County Hospital.
   Funeral services will be at Sweet Home Baptist Church, Five Points, on Thursday, 
May 11, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. L. B. Houston officiating.  Interment will be in the church 
cemetery.
   Surviving are a devoted husband, John P. Smith of Roanoke; two sisters, Georgia Mae 
Trammell of Atlanta and Alice Roberson of Mount Vernon, NY; two brothers, Charlie W. 
Barnes of Roanoke and James Barnes of Patchogue Long Island, N.Y.; and a host of other 
relatives and friends.
   Mrs. Smith was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church.
   Arrangements are by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

James Hilliard Arnett

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for James Hilliard Arnett, 76, of Roanoke were at 2 p.m. 
Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Fellowship Baptist Church, with the Revs. Harold Bonner and 
Louie Olds officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Arnett died Wednesday, May 3, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Nov. 3, 1923, son of Grover Oats 
and Willie D. Phillips Arnett.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, had been 
employed in the textile industry, and was a deacon at Fellowship Baptist Church.  He was 
preceded in death by a son, James Lamar Arnett.
   Survivors include his wife, Earline Norred Arnett of Roanoke; two daughters, Shirley 
Crockett and Linda Brown of Roanoke; three sons, Dennis Arnett, Roger Arnett and 
Stanley Arnett of Roanoke; a sister Jeanetta Harmon of Valley; 12 grandchildren and 
10 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Bubba Dollar, Whit Bonner, L. W. Culberson, Larry Joe Norred, 
Ronnie Norred and Bobby Norred.

Daisy Denney

   (MILLTOWN) Daisy Denney, 91, of Milltown died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at East 
Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Graveside services were Saturday May 6, at 1 p.m. at Milltown Cemetery, with the Rev. 
Herbert Howard officiating.
   Mrs. Denney is survived by one daughter, Dena Edge of Opelika; one son, Gordon 
Denney of Milltown; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Denney was born in Chambers County on July 26, 1908, and was a lifelong 
resident of Milltown.  She taught art for many years in Randolph, Chambers and Clay 
counties.  She was a member of Milltown Baptist Church.  Mrs. Denney was preceded in 
death by her husband, Bill Denney.
   Arrangements were by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Cenus Meigs Denton, 78, of Roanoke were Monday, 
May 15, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Roanoke First Baptist Church, with Dr. Douglas Turner 
officiating.  Burial was at Daviston Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Denton died Sunday, May 14, at Hospice LaGrange.
   A Randolph County resident since 1946, Mrs. Denton was born in Tallapoosa County 
on March 17, 1922, daughter of W. U. and Leila Drake Meigs.  She was a homemaker 
and a member of First Baptist Church, Roanoke.  Mrs. Denton was preceded in death by 
a grandson, Kelly Richard Linch Jr.
   Survivors include her husband, Frank Edward Denton of Roanoke; a daughter, Carol 
Denton Linch of LaGrange, Ga.; a son, David Frank Denton of Roanoke; three grand- 
children; and one sister Nell Freeman of Daviston.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Florence Haynes Taylor, 96, of Roanoke were at 
3 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Friendship Christian Church, with the Revs. Bernard 
Fuller, Hugh Vines and Roger Jones officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mrs. Taylor died Sunday, May 14, at LaFayette Nursing Home in LaFayette.
   She was born in Coweta County, Ga., on Oct. 21, 1903, daughter of Jake Wiley and 
Jimmy Lou Harrison Haynes.  She was a homemaker, a lunchroom worker at Randolph 
County High School, a member of Friendship Homemakers Club, and a member of 
Friendship Christian Church.  She was preceded by her husband, Noel Orvin Taylor.
   Survivors include a daughter, Katherine T. Bailey of Lanett; five sons, James W. Taylor, 
Ronald Taylor and Wayne H. Taylor of Roanoke, Thomas D. Taylor of Wedowee and 
Orvin W. Taylor of Woodland; a brother Julious W. Haynes of LaGrange; two half-sisters, 
Cloi Wilson and Eucal Haynes of Woodland; three half-brothers, Howard Haynes and 
Aron Haynes of Fairfax and Rudolph Haynes of Huguley; 16 grandchildren; 
24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.

   (FRANKLIN, Ga.) Funeral services for Gladys Smith Allen, 81, of LaGrange, Ga., 
formerly of Roanoke, were Sunday, May 14, 2000, at 3 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral 
Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Cowhick officiating.  Burial was at Bethel East Baptist 
Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Allen died Friday, May 12, at Florence Hand Home in LaGrange, Ga.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Allen was born March 21, 1919, daughter of Matt and 
Leo Daniel Smith.  She was a member of Bethel East Baptist Church and had been 
employed with Palm Beach Company for 40 years.
   Survivors include two daughters, Glenda Waller of LaGrange and Patsy Taylor of 
Wadley; one son, Tony Allen of Woodland; one brother, Crawford Smith of Woodland; 
six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Weta Pike Nelms

   (WEDOWEE) Weta Pike Nelms, 60, of Wedowee died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at 
Hospice LaGrange in LaGrange, Ga., after several years of declining health.
   Mrs. Nelms was born in Heard County, Ga., on Feb. 10, 1940, to the late John Pike, and 
Lottice Abner Pike.  She was an active member of Mount Pleasant Church, Wedowee.  
She was a nurse and had served in several hospital and medical offices around the South.
   Funeral services for Mrs. Nelms were Friday, May 12, at 2 p.m. at Franklin United 
Methodist Church, with the Revs. Larry Cosper, W. D. Allison and Rick McMahan 
officiating.  Interment was in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin.
   Survivors include her husband, Thomas Nelms of Wedowee; two sons, Ty and Ted 
Alford of Franklin; one step-daughter, Sherry McBride of Forreston, Texas; one brother, 
Bonnie Pike of Griffin, Ga.; six grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Annie Lou Sherman

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Annie Lou Sherman, 89, of Roanoke were Sunday, 
May 14, 2000, at 3 p.m. at Mt. Zion Christian Church, with the Rev. Harold Bonner 
officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Sherman died Thursday, May 11, at Randolph County Hospital.
   A former resident of Barber County, Mrs. Sherman was a Coffee County native, born 
Jan. 8, 1911, daughter of Walter and Nancy Victoria Faulk Robinette.  She was a member 
of Mt. Zion Christian Church and had been employed with Callaway Mills.  She was 
preceded in death by her husband, William L. Sherman, and two sons, Charles William 
Sherman and Thomas Sherman.
   Survivors include two sons, Gene Sherman of Roanoke and Gordon Sherman of 
Dunwoody, Ga.; one sister, Rachel Boothe of Eufaula; two grandchildren; one great- 
granddaughter; three step-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great- 
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Marshall Griffin, Harry Morsch Jr., Rex Marshall Sr., Donnie Owens, 
George Cutchen and Michael Cutchen.  Honorary pallbearers were Hugh Lee Morris,

   (WADLEY) Louise Evelyn Higgins, 53, of Wadley died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, 
at Randolph County Hospital, Roanoke.
   Funeral services were Saturday, May 13, at 1 p.m. at Mount Olive United Methodist 
Church, Wadley, with the Rev. Hollis Boykin officiating.  Burial will be Saturday, May 20, 
in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Chicago, Ill.
   Survivors include her husband, Robert Higgins of Wadley; two sons, Anthony Hart and 
Aaron Hart of Chicago; a daughter, Tammy Hart of Oak Park, Ill.; two step-daughters, 
Janice Hudson and Debbie Higgins of Chicago; two brothers, Burlis Cook of Chicago and 
Walter Arnold of Momence, Ill.; a sister Bernice Cooks of Chicago; and eight grand- 
children.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivory and Beulah Hart; and a 
granddaughter.
   Born in Chicago, Mrs. Higgins moved to Randolph County after her marriage to Robert 
Higgins in 1986.  Mrs. Higgins was retired from Chicago Public Schools, where she 
worked for 17 years as a cafeteria cook.  She was employed as a cook at the Roanoke 
Burger King for the last seven years.  She was a member of Mount Olive United 
Methodist Church, Wadley.  The Chicago arrangements will be completed by the 
A. A. Rayner and Sons Funeral Home, Chicago.

   (LANETT) Mary Lois Ross, 76, of Lanett died Monday, May 8, 2000, at George H. 
Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Funeral services were at Vines Funeral Home Chapel, LaFayette, on Saturday, May 13, 
at noon, with Elder Reynolds officiating.  Interment was Hopewell Baptist Church 
Cemetery, Milltown.
   Surviving are two sons, Walter Ross Jr. of Oakland, Calif., and John Will Ross of 
Lanett; two brothers, Lewis Askew of LaFayette and Allen Askew Jr. of Camp Hill; three 
sisters, Jessie Hardy of Pensacola, Fla., Annie Knight of Fort Myers, Fla. and Jessie Bell 
Cosborne of Martham, Ill.; four grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of other 
relatives and friends.

   (LAFAYETTE) Winnie Hay, 93, of LaFayette died Monday, May 15, 2000, at her 
residence.
   Funeral services will be at Shiloh Baptist Church, LaFayette, on Wednesday, May 17, at 
2 p.m. with burial in the church cemetery.  The Rev. John Cole, the Rev. LaFayette Aaron, 
and the Rev. Carlis Brown will officiate.  Pallbearers will be grandsons.
   Surviving are three daughters, Clara Mae Fant of LaFayette, Annette Clanton of Camp 
Hill, and Gail Blankenship of Daviston; four sons, Wallace Hay of Fairfax, Ronnie Hay of 
Pensacola, Fla., and Phillip Wayne Hay and Ralph Hay of LaFayette; 12 grandchildren; 
20 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Hay was born in Randolph County on Oct. 1, 1906.  She was retired from 
Avondale Mills in LaFayette after 37 years of service.
   She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Bobby Corell Sheats

   (NEWELL) Funeral services for Bobby Corell Sheats, 67, of Newell, were at 2 p.m. 
Friday, May 19, 2000, at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Revs. Barry Cosper and Carl 
Jiles officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Sheats died Wednesday, May 17, at his residence following an extended illness.
   He was born in Heard County, Ga., on May 1, 1933, son of Joe C. and Cora Smith 
Sheats.  He was an Army veteran of World War II, was self-employed in the poultry 
business and was a Baptist, with church membership at Unity Church of God in Bowdon, 
Ga.
   Survivors include his wife, I. V. Sheats of Newell; two daughters, Ivy Nell Shelton of 
Carrollton, Ga., and Carrie Holloway of Wedowee; three sons, Ronnie Sheats and Sephus 
Sheats of Newell and Joel Sheats of Woodland; four sisters, Faye Yates of Phenix City, 
Movene Moon of Hogansville, Ga., Diamond Wilson of Carrollton and Ola Ree Landrum 
of Cedartown, Ga.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Dobson Thornton

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Dobson Thornton, 84, of Roanoke will be at 11 a.m. 
on Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Midway United Methodist Church, with the Revs. James 
Manley and Clay Manley officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Thornton died Tuesday, May 23, in Wedowee Hospital.
   He was born in Randolph County on Sept. 14, 1915, son of Larkin and Maudie Dobson 
Thornton.  He was self-employed as a commercial contractor and was a member of 
Midway United Methodist Church.  He was preceded in death by his wife Alene Thornton.
   Survivors include two daughters, Judy Bassett of Wedowee and Emily Harris of 
Bremen, Ga.; a son, Billy Frank Thornton of Roanoke; three grandchildren; and 
one great-granddaughter.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee after 11 a.m. on 
Wednesday.  Mr. Thornton will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 10 a.m. 
on Thursday.
   Pallbearers will be Gary Holloway, Keith Langley, Mike LeVeque, W. C. Pate, Asa 
Williams and Bobby Yates.

   (WEDOWEE) Funeral services for Gross H. Haynes, 73, of Wedowee were at 2 p.m.

   Mr. Haynes died Saturday, May 20, at his residence.
   A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born Oct. 13, 1926, son of Aaron and 
Minda Lipham Haynes.  He was employed as a truck driver and was a Methodist.
   Survivors include his wife Sara Wilson Haynes of Wedowee; two daughters, Sheila 
Haynes of Wedowee and Rhonda Estes of Ranburne; a sister Rilma Bailey of Roanoke; 
a brother Alfred Haynes of Union City, Ga.; and a grandson.

Nora Blondell Hawthorne

   (TALLADEGA) Nora Blondell Hawthorne, 71, of Talladega died Saturday, May 20, 
2000, at Health South in Birmingham.  Funeral services were at Usrey Chapel, Talladega, 
at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 23, with burial in Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Hawthorne was a native of Randolph County and a resident of Talladega for the 
past 60 years.  She was a member of United Methodist Church and the owner and 
operator of Wayside Grocery for many years.  She was the author of "Love Knows No 
Distance" and a graduate of Alabama Institute for the Blind.
   Surviving are a daughter, Betty H. Veach of Talladega; one son, James Larry 
Hawthorne of Nashville, Tenn.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

and Roxie Strain Benefield.  She was a homemaker, and with her husband owned and 
operated D.C. Gay General Merchandise.  She was a member of Big Springs Baptist 
Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Gay, a son Bobby Gay, and a 
granddaughter, Cherlyn Dugger.
   Survivors include a daughter, Gloria Frances Willis of Knoxville; a sister, Mrs. George 
Ledbetter of Roanoke; a brother, Dallas Benefield of LaGrange, Ga.; two granddaughters;

   (LANETT) Violet Hendry, 63, of Lanett died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at LaGrange 
Hospice, LaGrange, Ga.
   Mrs. Hendry was born in Lee County on Feb. 19, 1937, daughter of the late Howard 
and Mary Johns.  She was a homemaker, a member of the Valley Rescue Squad Women's 
Auxiliary and a Baptist.
   Survivors include her husband, William Harold Hendry; a daughter, Linda Hendry Lee 
of Huguley; a son, William Frank Hendry of Roanoke; three brothers, Robert Johns of 
Shawmut and Arnold Johns and Junior Johns of Lanett; a sister, Jo Ann Sorrells of 
Cusseta; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
2 p.m. on Friday, May 19, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery in Lanett.

Veterans Administration Medical Center, Tuskegee.

CDT on Thursday, May 25, with burial in Pine Hill Cemetery, Lanett.
   The Rev. William A. Dean and Dr. N. Q. Reynolds will officiate.
   Survivors include two brothers, Isaisah Reynolds of Oxnard, Calif., and Dr. N. Q. 
Reynolds of Anniston; three sisters, Maudie Taylor and Fannie Brooks of Lanett and Sallie

his parents, Shelly George Reynolds Sr. and Willie Bessie Reynolds, a brother, Wendell

OBITUARIES:

Tony Sanspree

   (WEDOWEE) Tony Sanspree, 11, a native of Mobile and a resident of Wedowee, died 
Saturday, May 27, 2000, at a Mobile hospital.
   An avid outdoorsman, he attended Wedowee Middle School and played defensive end 
with the Woodland Bobcats youth football team.  Previously, he attended Burroughs 
Elementary School in Theodore through the fourth grade and was a member of the 
'98 Mims Park Redskins football team.
   He is survived by his mother and step-father, Karen B. and Billy Ward; his father, 
Richard Sanspree Jr.; brothers and sisters, Amy Brocco, Richard, April and Brandon 
Sanspree and Willie, David, Daniel and Chris Ward; his grandmother, Joan Sanspree; 
aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends.
   A memorial service will be held at Union Hill Congregational Methodist Church on 
County Rd. 82, Wedowee, on Sunday, June 4, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dorsey White 
officiating.

   (VALLEY) Graveside services for Verna Crisler Gilbert, 92, of Valley, formerly of

   Mrs. Gilbert died Tuesday, May 23, at Lanier Memorial Nursing Home in Valley.
   She was born in Chambers County at New Hope on July 17, 1907, daughter of John 
Henry and Bird Van Pendergast Crisler.  She graduated from Handley High School in 
Roanoke and attended Alverson Business College in Birmingham.  She was employed for 
many years at the Roanoke Plant of Palm Beach Company, where she retired as a 
seamstress.  She was a longtime member of First Congregational Christian Church in 
Roanoke, where she served in the Women's Fellowship and also was a member of the local 
Pilot Club.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Otis C. Gilbert, and by 
her parents.
   Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
   Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. S. T. 
Janney officiating.  Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
   Mrs. Webb died Sunday, May 28, at Traylor Nursing Home in Roanoke.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Webb was born May 27, 1922, daughter of 
Jesse B. and Lula Yates McCarter.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Opelika 
and had been employed with Palm Beach Company.  She was preceded in death by her 
husband, Grady Webb Sr.
   Survivors include two sisters, Daisy McCarter of Wadley and Doris Woodall of 
Thomaston, Ga.; and one brother, Jim. L. McCarter of Burbank, Calif.
   Pallbearers were Rodney Clark, Billy Adamson, Shawn Burke, Gerry Burke, Steve 
Nunn and Bill Harvel.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Rebecca H. Tyson

   (VALLEY) Rebecca H. Tyson, 84, of Valley died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Lanier 
Memorial Hospital.
   Mrs. Tyson was born in Chambers County on Feb. 16, 1916, daughter of the late Annie 
Smith Hadaway and Arthur Hadaway.  She had retired from Lesser Clothing in Savannah, 
Ga., and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
   Survivors include two daughters, Ann Lacy of Huguley and Jane Long of Alex City; a 
son, Charles William Tyson of Roanoke; four sisters, Amy Wood and Julia Haynes of 
Valley, Lillian Lamb of Birmingham and Doris Howell of Hogansville, Ga.; a brother, 
Arthur Hadaway Jr. of Lanett; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 
15 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Tyson, and a 
son, John F. Tyson.
   Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 
2 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, with burial in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery at Welch.  
The Rev. Gerald Sykes officiated.
   The family asks that memorial donations be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
   Arrangements were by Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home, Valley.

Robert Wesley Trammell

   (ROANOKE) Robert Wesley Trammell, 71, of Roanoke died Tuesday, May 23, 2000.
   Elder Trammell is the son of the late P. G. Trammell and Lavada Paige Trammell.  
A native of Randolph County, he retired after 34 years at Inland Steel of Gary, Ind., 
returned to Randolph County and co-founded (along with his wife) and pastored New 
Testament Outreach Church of Wedowee.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army with six 
years of service.  He graduated from Cobb Avenue High School in Anniston and Moody 
Bible College of East Chicago, Ind.  He also pastored in Gary, at Greater Cannan Church 
for several years.
   Funeral services were Sunday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at New Testament Outreach Church, 
with the Rev. Willie A. Treadwell and Dr. H. L. Jones officiating.  Burial was in 
Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Wadley.
   Survivors include his wife, Evangelist Virgie M. Trammell of Roanoke; his mother, 
Lavada Trammell; a daughter, Eugenia Trammell-Hinkle, of Massachusetts; two sons, 
Robert Earl Trammell of California and Gordon Trammell of Massachusetts; three 
brothers, Leroy Trammell of Dayton, Ohio, James Trammell of Las Vegas, Nev., and J. P. 
Trammell of Dayton; five sisters, Eva Slay of Roanoke and Naomi Minnifield, Betty 
Miller, Mary Cleveland and Patricia Toler of Dayton; and six grandchildren.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.
